Rise of Indian Americans Book Review

The Editor’s Desk by Samir Shukla I cherish my dual being. I’m a proud American who is proud of his Indian heritage. This combination has helped mark my place in the world. Indian Americans for decades have embedded in the American ethos, culture, and mainstream while preserving their cultural markers – language, food, art, philosophy. Indians have migrated to America for over a century, but the numbers began increasing in late 1960s and early 1970s. According to the 2020 Census, there are about 4.3 million Indian Americans in the United States. The progress of Indian Diaspora, Indians who have migrated around the world, is evident, and this is especially true for the community’s progress in the United States. Indian Americans have worked to become the most successful immigrant community of the last several decades. The immigrant experience, no matter from what part of the world, becomes the continuing American experiment. This is the real story of America. Our family story could be written in volumes as can be of many immigrant families. These stories pave the roads of immigrants leading to progress and prosperity via hard work, perseverance, and sacrifice. The anthology, Kamala Harris and the Rise of Indian Americans (Wisdom Tree Books), is a timely collection of essays about the achievements of Indian Americans in all walks of American life. Kamala Harris rising to be Vice President of the United States is an obvious entry point into this conversation. I can see my family members’ stories in many of the essays. Arriving with little, my parents helped build the foundation for other family members to later migrate here and redirect their lives. Many Indians have arrived on American shores and set up small shops, bought small motels and businesses, studied, and ventured into all facets of American life. continued on page 94

Community Events competition. An important part of the Chinese traditional calendar, dragon boat racing originated over 2,300 years ago on the life-sustaining rivers of southern China. Carolina Renaissance Festival: Huntersville, NC (Through November 21, 2021)

Back to School as an Indian American by Shivani Tripathi After an unprecedented gap, students are finally returning to in-person learning across the country. Yellow buses are again part of everyday traﬃc and cars snake around school parking lots to drop oﬀ, and later pick up, children. I recently noticed fliers outside of Desi grocery stores advertising Coaching Classes, a reflection not only of the large Indian population in central North Carolina, but also potentially the number of more recent immigrants familiar with the idea of coaching classes versus what is traditionally known in America as tutoring. I chuckled to myself and thought perhaps American tutoring centers don’t have the rigor a South Asian parent desires, although before the pandemic I witnessed mostly Desi kids pour out of such establishments. In the decades my family has spent in the Triangle, it seems some things have not changed when it comes to Indian parents and their children’s schooling: magnet schools from my childhood still hold spots coveted by parents, and an informal indicator of how good a school is measured by the percentage of Desis attending. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that as a community we pride ourselves on how seriously we take academics. Personally speaking, in elementary school my father would help me with my current math assignments and teach me concepts so I could be at least a few grade levels ahead. My mother would get subscriptions to magazines like Highlights and National Geographic to ensure my siblings and I always had something educational to read around the house and she also involved us in extracurricular activities such as public speaking, also in elementary school. Outside media would further reinforce the importance of academic excellence. India Abroad, a now defunct newspaper, was a way for many of us to stay informed about the Indian American community before satellite channels and social media. The paper would highlight whiz kids winning national science fairs, include photographs of smiling Fulbright Scholars, interview brainy teenagers getting admitted to medical school and so on. It seemed for Indian American kids and especially their parents, being featured in India Abroad was a badge of honor. One of our main sources of entertainment were Hindi films and the video cassettes we would rent might contain melodramatic scenes such as a mother mortgaging her jewelry to pay for school fees and a family weeping with joy when they heard “first class, first”. My siblings and I didn’t know exactly what this phrase meant, but when we saw the protagonists and their parents with tears in their eyes at the continued on page 78

Indian Railways is a monopoly and owned by the Government of India. It manages the fourth-largest railway network in the world by size, with a route length of 67,956 km (42,226 mi). In terms of the distance traveled each year by passengers, it is the world’s most heavily used system. Railways are the lifeline of India and operate electriclocomotive, diesel-locomotive and passenger-coaches. The system consists of freight, passengers, suburban railway systems, tourist trains, luxury trains, and toy trains. Indian Railways has its own mascot named “Bholu”, the guard elephant, which was designed by the National Institute of Design. It was broadcasted on April 16, 2002. The first train in India ran from Mumbai (Bombay) to Thane on April 16, 1853. The first passenger train in India ran on August 15, 1854 from Howrah to Hoogly. The longest train journey covered by any Indian train is of 4,233 kilometers (2,630 miles) by the Vivek Express. With a total running time of 80 hours and 15 minutes with nearly 55 scheduled stops. It passes through 8 states of the country. Indian Railways is currently constructing a bridge which will be the highest railway bridge and will rise 359 meters (1,178 feet) over the Chenab River. In the fiscal year ending March 2020, Indian Railways carried over 8 billion passengers, averaging 22 million daily passengers. The system has over 1.3 million employees. IR handles 100,000 passenger trains daily, on both longdistance and suburban routes, covering 7,325 stations across India. The Indian government has committed to electrifying India’s entire rail network by 2023–24 and become a “net-zero (carbon emissions) railway” by 2030.

USA Knowledge Amtrak The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, popularly known as Amtrak, is a passenger railroad service that provides medium and long-distance inter-city rail service in the United States and to nine cities in Canada. Amtrak is a blend of the words America and trak. Founded in 1971 as a quasi-public corporation to operate many U.S. passenger rail routes, Amtrak receives a combination of state and federal subsidies but is managed as a for-profit organization. Amtrak serves more than 500 destinations in 46 states and three Canadian provinces, operating more than 300 trains daily over 21,400 miles of track. Amtrak owns approximately 623 miles of this track and operates an additional 132 miles of track. It owns 23 tunnels and 1200 bridges. In fiscal year 2018, Amtrak served 31.7 million passengers, while employing more than 20,000 people. Nearly 87,000 passengers ride Amtrak trains daily. Nearly two-thirds of passengers come from the 10 largest metropolitan areas. Every day, more than 2,200 trains operate over some portion of the Boston-to-Washington corridor. That includes both Amtrak and commuter trains. Between New York and Washington, Amtrak carries three times as many passengers as all the airlines combined. Amtrak operates 15 long-distance trains; the longest route is 2,728 miles (the Texas Eagle), from Chicago to Los Angeles by way of San Antonio. The Auto Train, operating between Lorton, Virginia, and Sanford, Florida, is one of the longest passenger trains in the world with 40 cars, for passengers and automobiles. In 1976, Amtrak purchased the Northeast Corridor, which included trackage, bridges, stations, communication and signal systems. Southern Railway was one of a handful of railroads that did not turn over its passenger operations to Amtrak in 1971. Amtrak finally took over in 1979 and renamed it Crescent.

Sayers In recent memory, I’ve personally been identified by various individuals that I don’t fit into a specific category of ideology, appearance, or mannerisms. To most, these observations would be construed as insults. To me? I see them as endorsements… at least the ones without the intent to cause shame. I’ve heard them all, and each comment aﬀects my psyche on various levels. The paradoxical roots of my upbringing have developed into an uncommon mentality that I cannot just reverse at a moment’s notice. If there’s any one category that I could see myself placed into, it’s that of a “free spirit”. But what is a “free spirit”, you may be asking? People like this often…. • Are generally independent • Travel when they want to • Have unique hobbies and interests • Equally enjoy being alone or in groups • Feel comfortable in their own skin to love themselves • Love to take on new challenges • Prefer to enjoy experiences rather than collect trinkets • Are optimistic and carefree • Are very humble • Have a peculiar sense of humor I don’t particularly excel at all these traits. I still have diﬃculties accepting compliments from time to time as well as some self-esteem issues due to bullying I received as a child. Also, I occasionally do slip into a pessimistic mood depending on the situation I’m in. Also, the “travel when I want to” option isn’t a true reality both due to lack of finances and time. For everything else on this list, I do try to uphold each of them to the best of my ability. Human minds prefer to place labels on new people, places and things in order to become better accustomed to them in their day-to-day lives. If you are looking for ways to pay for college, one of the first resources you may turn to is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Every student qualifies for some form of student aid, so make sure you are not skipping this step during your application process. Over the past couple of decades, the Department of Education has streamlined the application process, but questions can still arise. If you or your children are applying to a college, here are five essential things you need to know about the FAFSA. 1. What is FAFSA? The FAFSA is an annual form filled out by current and prospective college students in the United States to determine their eligibility for student aid. It can be filled out by undergraduate and graduate students. The FAFSA can determine your eligibility for grants such as the Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEC), federal work-study programs, loans, and scholarships. 2. What information does the FAFSA provide you with? The FAFSA provides you with two critical pieces of information. The first is Expected Family Contribution (EFC) which is an index number that the financial aid department uses to determine how much financial aid a student would receive if you attend that particular school. The information you report on the FAFSA is used to calculate the EFC. The EFC is then calculated according to a formula established by law. The second piece of information is the Cost of Attendance (COA) which is the amount it will cost a student to go to school. Most colleges and universities will calculate a student’s COA to show the total costs of attending the school. Typically, the COA is an estimate of tuition and fees, room and board, books, supplies, transportation, loan fees, miscellaneous expenses, childcare, disability or any reasonable costs for study-abroad programs. 3. Does everyone need to complete the FAFSA? The short answer is, yes, you do. By not filling out the FAFSA, you are missing out on a good deal provided by the U.S. Department of Education. Students could be eligible for federal and state grants that do not to be repaid. Or they could be eligible for low-interest student loans and workstudy programs, helping them to fund their education and build their resumes. Every student qualifies for some form of student aid. 4. How do I complete the FAFSA? The FAFSA website is www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students will need their social security number, alien registration number (for non-U.S. citizens), federal income tax returns, W2s, and other records of money earned. These include bank statements and investment records, untaxed income records, and the student and parent’s FSA ID to sign the document electronically. 5. What is the deadline? The application opens October 1, 2021, and deadline is June 30, 2022. You should complete it as soon as possible because many grants and scholarships are on a first-come-first-serve basis. Most schools have funds that are limited, so students have a better chance of receiving those funds, if eligible, when their FAFSA is submitted early. North Carolina and South Carolina give awards until funds are depleted. Early applications are suggested. Applications are now open.

I have never met anybody who got up and was bouncing off the wall to get to work. I mean, my dad had a great job, but he was hardly whistling while shaving for work at 6am. Very rarely, when we had a day off from school, my brother and I would accompany him to the office. This was a luxurious VIP experience, from the driver carrying his briefcase to a person opening his door at the high rise building at the government complex. This was a massive, fun place for us, with a secretary in a large room outside the 5th floor office. A messenger could be summoned and would run in and collect envelopes with a fancy wax seal on them to deliver across the building or across the campus of many white buildings that made up what was then called the Secretariat in Islamabad, Pakistan. My dad’s office was enormous. Thinking back, it was probably half the size of the bottom floor of my house. The living room area of it had a large couch and four large chairs. My dad would sometimes hang his coat in a closet and lie down on the couch, while the cafeteria brought us kids soft drinks and snacks. We drew pictures on fancy government notepads and were fascinated by things like staplers and paper clip dispensers and those rocking pads used to dry my dad’s very prominent (and unreadable) signature on multiple documents. He would pace around the large space talking while one of the secretaries took dictation in shorthand – which I looked at from behind her seat as fascinating hieroglyphics. The reason I mention this memory dating back to the early 1970s is that if you had ever asked me about my

favorite job, I would have said I wanted to be like my dad and do the big stuﬀ of government. I couldn’t imagine anybody on earth not wanting or liking a job like that. But I also mention that because debt and the needs of the lifestyle and maybe some forward thinking on the future of his children, he left it all behind to sit in a cubicle the size of a bathroom at the UN. In the late 1980s, when I was visiting from America, he looked up while reading his Newsweek magazine in bed and said: “I am tired.” He was just 58 then. The pandemic employment story is complex and multi-tiered. I have now met people who invested in the right stocks during the pandemic and probably don’t need to work for a good while. Having worked white collar and blue collar in America over the decades, I know people who made a new model out of our dependence on video calls; and I know people who were earning the best money of their lives due to all the stimulus checks and boosters being thrown at them. continued on page 80

The Adult Dance Student My continuing journey of lifelong learning My Voice by Preethi Sriram Within the Natya Shastras, a text about theater, drama and dance, one of the origin stories of how classical Indian art forms came to the Earth was that Dharma, or righteousness in the Earth, was in decline in Thretha Yuga, so divine beings known as Devatas beseeched the creator Brahma for a kridaneeyakam, or a form of entertainment for teaching Dharma. This entertainment would be like a medicine for the people so to help them understand the concepts of Dharma. As a child, I attended shows with my parents during cultural festivals like Pongal, Ugadhi and Deepavali where I had the opportunity to watch various cultural performances from various parts of India including kolattam or stick dance, Garba/Raas, and bhangra. I even watched a Maypole dance during a festival, and always thought it was Indian until only very recently learning of its origins. The last one about the Maypole dance is most fascinating to me from an artistic, spiritual perspective in that art is something that should be shared amongst all of us to be enjoyed, as we are all family in the grander context. For classical dance performances, I would attend as a child with my parents many arengetrams, a dance recital that a student performs as their first solo piece once they have attained a level of knowledge of the dance form of Bharthanatyam. Recently, when attending an arangetram, I watched the show from a diﬀerent perspective: that being of an adult dance student. The appreciation for the stamina and determination of the dancer was enhanced in that I could appreciate the amount of dedication and devotion it takes to get to perform at that level. The dancer is performing solo pieces throughout the show for nearly two hours straight, with a specific type of dance piece that can last around 1215 minutes. As an adult, I can see how this lesson of being on stage and practice for the dancer is a lesson in life that they will carry with them. continued on page 94

A new 800,000-square-foot aluminum can plant that Ball Corp. recently announced in Cabarrus County is expected to bring more than 200 jobs, strengthening the county’s standing as one of the most rapidly growing economies in the state and allowing Concord to step further out of neighboring Charlotte’s shadow. Ball Corp., a global aluminum beverage packaging company based in Broomfield, Colo., announced plans July 27 to expand its operations to North Carolina stating that the new facility will be up and running by the start of 2023. The facility, at 2321 Concord Parkway South, is expected to represent a $383 million investment from the company. The manufacturing plant will be part of a vertically integrated beverage manufacturing hub consisting of Ball Corp., Red Bull and Rauch North America on The Grounds, the former Philip Morris cigarette manufacturing site. Red Bull and Rauch filed their plans jointly, whereas Ball filed separately, but will manufacture cans for Red Bull. The overall hub is predicted to bring in more than $1 billion in investment and more than 600 jobs by 2027, according to a news release from the governor’s oﬃce. If successful, it would be the largest economic development in Cabarrus County history, according to the Cabarrus Economic Development Corp. The overall average wage for the three companies is projected at $57,393. In early July, Red Bull and Rauch announced plans to build a 2 million-square-foot beverage manufacturing site, adding 413 jobs and investing $740 million by 2027, according to a news release.

Red Bull’s 323 jobs will have an average salary of $50,367, and Rauch’s 323 jobs will have a comparable average salary of $50,387. Ball Corp.’s average salary will be $70,555 for their 220 jobs. Ball Corp. did not disclose the median salary, so it’s not clear whether high-paying executive jobs are skewing that average. Regardless, these average salaries would be well above Cabarrus County’s average of $41,255. “We are not content to be a bedroom community to Charlotte,” Concord City Manager Lloyd Payne said. “Continued development such as this project enables us to become more independent and perpetuate our ability to operate as a full-service city.” Cabarrus County has one of the strongest county economies in the state with the average salary being the seventh-highest in the state and the fifth-highest median household income of $69,297 in 2018, according to the Department of Commerce. Dentists Chip Away at Uninsured Problem by Offering Patients Membership Plans By Phil Galewitz Nevada dentist David White has seen diseased and rotted teeth in the mouths of patients who routinely put off checkups and avoided minor procedures such as fillings. While dental phobia is a factor, White said, the overriding reason people avoid treatment is cost. To help patients lacking dental insurance, White in 2019 started offering a membership plan that looks much like an insurance policy — except it’s good only at his offices in Reno and Elko. Adults pay $29 a month — or $348 a year — and receive two free exams, two cleanings, X-rays and an emergency exam, services valued at $492. They also get a 20 percent discount on office procedures such as fillings and extractions. About 250 of White’s patients have signed up, and it’s led many to visit more frequently for routine exams and get necessary treatment, he said. “It’s pushing patients toward better oral health,” White said. He’s among a quarter of dentists nationwide offering memberships, according to a 2021 survey of 70,000 dentists by the American Dental Association. These in-office plans are largely targeted to the 65 million Americans who lack dental insurance and must pay out-ofpocket for all their care. Dentists also like the plans better than handling insurance plans because they don’t have to deal with insurers’ heavily discounted reimbursement rates, waits to get preapprovals to provide services and delays in getting their claims paid. Lack of dental coverage contributes to the delaying or forgoing of dental care by 1 in 4 adults, according to a KFF analysis of a 2019 national survey. Kleer, a Wayne, Pennsylvania, company started in 2018, has helped more than 5,000 dentists set up the offerings. “Patients on membership plans act like insured patients and come in as much as insured patients, but they pay less for coverage while dentists get paid more,” said CEO Dave Monahan. “All we are doing is cutting out the middleman,” he said. Monahan said business has soared during the covid-19 pandemic as more dentists, confronted with higher costs for personal protective equipment and more patients without jobbased coverage, saw the need for such plans. Anthony Wright, executive director of consumer health advocacy group Access California, said he’s skeptical about the value of individual dental insurance but said patients also should be cautious about a dental membership plan because they are generally not overseen by states. “People should be continued on page 56

Patients say they appreciate that services under the memberships are less expensive than when paying strictly out-of-pocket, and prepaying for services motivates them to seek preventive services. “The membership plan keeps me on track, as it’s almost like I have a down payment on my care,” said Christina Campbell, 29, of Hamden, Connecticut. She had dental coverage under her mother’s policy until she was 26 and then started shopping for her own coverage. When her dentist, Kevin D’Andrea, mentioned his plan, she decided it looked too good to pass up. With the membership, she said, she is back to getting twice-annual checkups and cleanings, and she no longer hesitates when it’s time for X-rays. Campbell, who manages a winery, pays $38 a month. Holly Wyss, 59, of Greenwood, Indiana, found dental insurance too expensive, so she joined a $300-a-year membership plan through her dentist, David Wolf. The discounts saved her several hundred dollars on two crowns, she said. “For me, it’s a no-brainer,” said Wyss, a nurse practitioner. “It’s been a godsend to me, since everything I pay is out-of-pocket.” Among the groups lacking dental insurance that have recently attracted attention are people covered by traditional Medicare. Many private Medicare Advantage plans offer some dental benefits. These plans provide coverage only at certain dental offices, have a premium and often cover just a small portion of patients’ costs. Average limit on coverage is $1,300, and more than half of enrollees are in plans with a $1,000 cap on benefits, according to a report from KFF. President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats have proposed adding a dental benefit to Medicare, along with other health care initiatives, as part of a $3.5 trillion human infrastructure plan those lawmakers are seeking to push through this fall. The bill released by the House Ways and Means Committee this month would still leave beneficiaries paying 20 percent of costs for preventive services such as checkups and between 50 percent to 90 percent of costs for certain procedures. And the law, if passed, could take five years or more to implement. The need among older Americans is great. Nearly half of Medicare beneficiaries, or 24 million people, had no dental coverage in 2019, according to KFF. In 2018, almost half of all Medicare beneficiaries had not visited a dentist within the past year (47%), with higher rates among African Americans (68%) and Hispanics (61%). D’Andrea, the Hamden, Connecticut, dentist, said the membership plan he started in 2020 builds patient loyalty. “Patients know upfront what their out-of-pocket expenses are, and they don’t have to wait and see what their insurance will cover,” he said. “It’s like a game the insurers play, keeping us on hold for an hour to get preapprovals. We pull enough teeth in the office, and it’s the same getting information out of them.”

aware that this is a generally unregulated field, so it’s buyer beware,” he said. Before joining a membership plan, consumers should ask what the dentist charges for procedures, so they know not just the discount but their actual out-of-pocket cost. In some cases, the membership plans are a viable option. “If you are going to an established practice and if the costs are reasonable and within your budget, it may make some sense” to enroll, he said. Vanessa Bernal, office manager at Winter Garden Smiles in central Florida, said many patients who are self-employed or work for small businesses have joined the practice’s membership plan. “They don’t have employer coverage, and if they went to buy it on their own they would face a waiting period, whereas our discounts start immediately,” she said. Winter Garden Smiles has enrolled more than 370 patients in its plan, which costs $245 a year for children and $285 for adults. The office has dropped out of three small insurance networks since starting its own plan. Many plans being offered around the country look much like dental insurance. Patients pay the dental office typically $300 to $400 a year. In return, they receive certain preventive services at no charge and other procedures at a discount. But the membership plans don’t have the annual deductibles or waiting periods that can make individually purchased dental insurance unattractive. Another deterrent to traditional insurance plans is their maximum benefit limits, usually $1,200 to $1,500 a year. In comparison, patients with memberships can use the discounts for unlimited treatment. About half of Americans get dental coverage through their workplace. Those policies are generally the best buy for those with the benefit. But Medicare doesn’t offer dental coverage, and most state Medicaid programs don’t cover dental treatment for adults. But for patients without a job-based plan, purchasing an independent dental policy is expensive and, unlike buying health insurance, it’s unclear whether the benefit outweighs the costs. That’s because dental costs are not as financially catastrophic as hospital bills, which can run into tens of thousands of dollars. Annual dental insurance premiums typically range from $400 to $700. Most plans cover all the cost of preventive services, like cleanings. For minor procedures, like fillings, the plans generally pay 70 percent to 80 percent. For major procedures, such as crowns, the plans often pay about 50 percent of the cost, which is still more than what the membership plans cover. The insurance plans, however, often have negotiated prices with dentists, so plan members’ responsibility is reduced by that also. Melissa Burroughs, who leads an oral-health-for-all campaign for the advocacy group Families USA, said the dental membership plans may help some people, but they don’t solve the problems of high dental costs and insurers treating coverage for teeth differently than for the rest of the body. “I don’t think these plans are the answer, and they definitely don’t meet the standard to make care truly affordable for many people,” she said. If for no other reason, it is because it will only help them in the long run. As it is, over the years it is established by the actuaries that women live longer than men and they, under most circumstances, end up inheriting all the assets of their family anyway. IRS tables for average lifespan for both men and women show the same thing; the average age for men is 84 and for women is 87 at the time of their death. So, it is also apparent that women need to understand enough about investing to keep tabs on the professionals or relatives/friends who would manage their money for them. While it is true that the financial learning for women can start at any age, just like it does for men, it is best if that indoctrination happens at an early age which puts the responsibility squarely on the wide shoulders of parents. It depends much on how the children are brought up and how they are introduced to the idea of managing and investing money. It is a somewhat different story as to how women face the dilemma of handling money. Generally, it happens two ways: one is they inherit the family assets when the male spouse dies. The other one is a bit more dire when they are single most of their life, handling everything on their own but still end up caring for many of her family members like aging parents or brother or even a dear friend. They even end up leaving their job to care for such people. The result of all this is that not only their own earning capacity diminishes but it also affects their retirement savings and Social Security payments. Fortunately, those who wish to seek a remedy, help is available. There are courses and classes and even tutoring available if you seek them out. Of course, plenty of books are published on this subject but this is one area, just like math or music, where you just need a teacher to hold your hand for a while and guide you through the maze of financial matters. I have always offered free help to those who have a need for it and are genuinely interested. Generally, all that is needed is a strong and burning desire and time to put in your efforts. One thing is for sure, women prefer investing in things which they understand. They must create that comfort zone first. Once they learn enough about investing in stocks and bonds, they do go for it and become experts over time. Many times, their comfort zone lies in the shares of companies whose products and services they know first-hand and that is just fine. That is how Peter Lynch at Fidelity managed the fabled Magellan Fund for a long time in the 70s and 80s (One up On Wall Street: Peter Lynch). We all can do the same too; it really does not need any special knowledge to succeed.

Women control over 51 percent of this country’s investable wealth, a number that is expected to rise to 66 percent by 2030 which is just 9 years away. Putting it in solid numbers, during the next several decades women will inherit approximately $29 trillion in assets, and they will need the knowledge and the knowhow to manage it. Some women will inherit assets from their parents as well as their spouses. Many others will accumulate wealth through their own professional and business accomplishments. And yet there are concerns; not only because they will have to be on top to manage all this wealth coming their way but also because they have to get familiar with how to do it successfully in a big hurry. Unfortunately, women are not in the loop for one reason or the other. Besides that, ironically many women think they are terrible investors even though countless studies have shown that just the opposite is true. Meredith Jones says in her book, “Women of the Street: why female money managers generate higher returns” that women have a lot of innate behavior that gives them an edge and makes them exceptional investors. Studies have shown that women are 10 percent less likely to sell when stocks are tumbling. Their cool-headed response is one reason why women’s portfolios outperform men’s on average 12 percent over the course of a year. Nevertheless, women are not immune to the ups and downs of markets, especially when markets crash. If women investors have a flaw, it could be that they are too conservative. I remember having numerous conversations with women clients where all they want to do is to keep their money in a money market account or at best in a CD. Many women don’t invest outside of a retirement account either. They tend to keep almost 80 percent of their non-retirement savings as cash in a checking or savings account, according to the Fidelity study. The study also shows that the aﬃnity for cash savings may be traced directly to women’s low esteem as investors. Only 24 percent in that same study felt comfortable enough with their knowledge of investing. circling the Earth, and that will only increase as the year goes on. Just this week, SpaceX deployed another 51 Starlink satellites into orbit.

The leaders also discussed important regional and global issues, including recent developments in Afghanistan. There was convergence of views on the threat posed by growth of terrorism and extremism, and all BRICS partners agreed to accelerate implementation of the BRICS Action Plan on Counter-Terrorism. At the conclusion of the Summit, the leaders adopted the “New Delhi Declaration”‘ The 2022 BRICS Summit will be held in Beijing.

Small satellites, easy access to orbit There are two main reasons for this exponential growth. First, it has never been easier to get a satellite into space. For example, on Aug. 29, 2021, a SpaceX rocket carried several satellites – including one built by my students – to the International Space Station. On Oct. 11, 2021, these satellites will deploy into orbit, and the number of satellites will increase again. The second reason is that rockets can carry more satellites more easily – and cheaply – than ever before. This increase isn’t due to rockets getting more powerful. Rather, satellites have gotten smaller thanks to the electronics revolution. The vast majority – 94% – of all spacecraft launched in 2020 were smallsats – satellites that weigh less than around 1,320 pounds (600 kilograms). Most of these satellites are used for observing Earth or for communications and internet. With a goal of bringing the internet to underserved areas of the globe, two private companies, Starlink by SpaceX and OneWeb together launched almost 1,000 smallsats in 2020 alone. They are each planning to launch more than 40,000 satellites in the coming years to create what are called “mega-constellations” in lowEarth orbit. Other companies are eyeing this US$1 trillion market, most notably Amazon with its Project Kuiper.

A crowded sky With the huge growth in satellites, fears of a crowded sky are starting to come true. A day after SpaceX launched its first 60 Starlink satellites, astronomers began to see them blocking out the stars. While the impact on visible astronomy is easy to understand, radio astronomers fear they may lose 70 percent sensitivity in certain frequencies due to interference from satellite megaconstellations like Starlink. Experts have been studying and discussing the potential problems posed by these constellations and ways the satellite companies could address them . These include reducing the number and brightness of satellites, sharing their location and supporting better image-processing software. As low-Earth orbit gets crowded, concern about space debris increases, as does a real possibility of collisions.

The ever-shrinking size of technology has led to tiny satellites like the one students are working on here. It is roughly the size of a loaf of bread. The idea that “space is getting crowded” has been around for a few years now, but just how crowded is it? And how crowded is it going to get? I am a professor of physics and director of the Center for Space Science and Technology at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. Many satellites that were put into orbit have gone dead and burned up in the atmosphere, but thousands remain. Groups that track satellite launches don’t always report the same exact numbers, but the overall trend is clear – and astounding. There were 7,941 satellites orbiting the Earth as of September 16, 2021. Since the Soviet Union launched Sputnik – the first human-made satellite – in 1957, humanity has steadily been putting more and more objects into orbit every year. Over the second half of the 20th century, there was a slow but steady growth, with roughly 60 to 100 satellites launched yearly until the early 2010s. But since then, the pace has been increasing dramatically. By 2020, 114 launches carried around 1,300 satellites to space, surpassing the 1,000 new satellites per year mark for the first time. But no year in the past compares to 2021. As of Sept. 16, roughly 1,400 new satellites have already begun Saathee.com

Future trends Less than 10 years ago, the democratization of space was a goal yet to be realized. Now, with student projects on the Space Station and more than 105 countries having at least one satellite in space, that goal is within reach. Every disruptive technological advancement requires updates to the rules – or the creation of new ones. SpaceX has tested ways to lower the impact of Starlink constellations, and Amazon has disclosed plans to de-orbit their satellites within 355 days after mission completion. These and other actions by diﬀerent stakeholders make me hopeful that commerce, science and human endeavors will find sustainable solutions to this potential crisis. October Announced as Hindu Heritage Month Last month, Dharma-based organizations including those of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and Jain traditions from around the world, announced the addition of another major festival, indeed an entire month of festivals, in October as the Hindu Heritage Month. Hindus represent one of the newest and the fastest growing immigrant communities in the United States and Canada. They are fully integrated into every aspect of their adopted society, enriching it with not only professional contributions but also rich cultural heritage. They are represented by elegant ethnic wear to delicious food to festivals like Holi, Diwali, and other diverse and cultural markers. Based on the “open source” model, the celebration of Hindu Heritage Month will be a showcase of the diversity of Hindus around the world. Each participating organization will decide the manner as well as the schedule of their event(s). On a given day, there may be several events taking place in diﬀerent parts of the United States and Canada. Celebrations may take many forms – cultural programs, fashion shows, webinars, multi-day conferences, walkathons and more. This year some events may be conducted in-person, but the majority will be virtual, given the current Covid-19 situation. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has announced that, eﬀective October 1, 2021, applicants subject to the immigration medical examination must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before the civil surgeon can complete an immigration medical examination and sign Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record. The announcement noted, “We are updating our policy guidance in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Aug. 17, 2021 update to the Technical Instructions for Civil Surgeons. That update requires applicants subject to the immigration medical examination to complete the COVID-19 vaccine series (one or two doses, depending on the vaccine) and provide documentation of vaccination to the civil surgeon before completion of the immigration medical examination. This requirement is eﬀective Oct. 1, 2021, and applies prospectively to all Forms I-693 signed by the civil surgeons on or after that date. We are working on updating Form I-693 and the form instructions to incorporate this new requirement. In general, individuals applying to become a lawful permanent resident, and other applicants as deemed necessary, must undergo an immigration medical examination to show they are free from any conditions that would render them inadmissible under the health-related grounds. USCIS designates eligible physicians as civil surgeons to perform this immigration medical examination for applicants within the United States and to document the results of the immigration medical examination on the Form I-693. USCIS may grant blanket waivers if the COVID-19 vaccine is:

•Not age-appropriate; •Contraindicated due to a medical condition; •Not routinely available where the civil surgeon practices; •Limited in supply and would cause significant delay for the applicant to receive the vaccination. The almighty paneer is back! Diwali is just around the corner, so we had to bring you one of India’s favorite desserts, rasgulla! Traditionally a very popular Bengali sweet, rasgulla or Rosogolla, are soft and spongy paneer (chhena) dumplings soaked in sugary syrup. Today these melt-in-your mouth dumplings are enjoyed across South Asia, making an appearance at most special occasions. Our special occasion happens to be Diwali coming up, so we decided to add a colorful twist to these traditionally white dumplings. Choose your favorite colors, follow the steps below and you’ll have the perfect treat for all your Festival of Lights celebrations! Have a Happy and safe Diwali everyone! Serves: 6-12 people Prep Time: 1 ½ hrs By: Taige Shukla Special thanks to Charu (Amma) Shukla

½ gallon of 2% milk

For homemade Paneer or Chhena: 1. You will need a ½ gallon of whole milk and ¼ cup lemon juice (or white vinegar) 2. In a medium-sized pot, bring the milk to a slow-boil on medium-high heat until the surface of the milk begins to foam. Reduce the heat and stir in the lemon juice until the milk is completely curdled. 3. Once the curds and whey are completely separated, strain the curds through a clean cheese cloth. Hold it under running water for about a minute then squeeze out as much of the water as possible. 4. Press the curds (while still in the cheese cloth) into a square shape and place it under something heavy for about 15-20 mins to ensure all the excess water is drained. Refrigerate until ready to use. Forming the paneer (chhena) dumplings: 1. Once the paneer is prepped and fully drained, place in a food processor and pulse until finely ground and crumbly. Remove the paneer and knead in your hands until it’s smooth/uniform and you can form it into a ball without it breaking. 2. Now split the ball into 12 equal parts and roll into dumplings, make sure they remain smooth and don’t crumble. NOTE: If you choose to make multicolor rasgulla, split the ball into 3 equal parts, add your choice of food coloring to each part, and briefly knead until the color is fully integrated. Then, you can split and roll each section into smaller dumplings. Cooking the dumplings: For this part I chose to use an Instant Pot, however traditionally a pressure cooker is used. If using an Instant Pot: Add in 1 cup of sugar, 2 ½ cups water, and prepped dumplings. Set to “Sealing”, press “Manual” and pressure cook on high for 10 minutes. Once the timer goes oﬀ, release the pressure, and remove the dumplings. Set them aside to cool and serve with the syrup that remains in the Instant Pot. If using a pressure cooker: In a large pressure cooker, bring 2 cups of sugar and 4 cups of water to a boil. Once boiling, add in the paneer dumplings, cover, and let pressure cook for one whistle. Reduce heat to medium low heat and let simmer for another 5 minutes. Turn oﬀ the heat and let the pressure release. Remove the dumplings and set them aside to cool. Serve with the remaining syrup.

The county Board of Commissioners conducted a public hearing Monday and voted to approve the grants. If approved, Rauch would receive more than $28.3 million in grants, Ball Corp. more than $18.7 million and Red Bull more than $7.5 million, according to county documents. After the grants are awarded, the county and city combined will net almost $10 million in taxes. “This project will impact not only the city of Concord but neighboring cities,towns and counties as the companies’ future employees will come from other areas aside from just Concord,” Payne said.

county is on par with counties like Lincoln and Moore but behind the neighboring powerhouse county of Mecklenburg with an average salary of $71,689. Based on Cabarrus County’s economic development and higher average salary compared to other counties, the Department of Commerce designated it a Tier 3 county and is the eighth-most economically sound county in the state. The 20 least economically distressed counties are labeled Tier 1 counties are and eligible for corresponding advantages in economic recruitment. State funding assistance All three corporations received financial incentives from the state through the Job Development Investment Grant approved by the state’s Economic Investment Committee. In total, the N.C. Department of Commerce oﬀered more than $7 million in grants to the three companies. As part of the grant, all three corporations are eligible to receive potential reimbursement based on a number of factors, such as tax rates, labor availability and overall project development cost. All JDIG reimbursements are distributed over 12 years on an annual basis. Ball Corp. is eligible for up to $3,084,000, Rauch for $3,057,000, and Red Bull for $1,008,000. The grant is only used in competitive situations in which an outside investor is considering other locations outside the state. The grant incentivizes companies to relocate to North Carolina, said David Rhoades, communications director for the Department of Commerce. Before deciding on North Carolina, Ball Corp. considered sites in Cherokee and Richland counties in South Carolina, according to state documents. The state and local governments had oﬀered cash grants, withholding tax rebates and income tax credits. To receive the grant annually, the company must meet certain benchmarks and continue to maintain them on a yearly basis. For Ball Corp., the company must complete investing the proposed $383 million and have hired all 220 employees by the end of 2024. It must also retain those jobs though 2034. Meeting the benchmarks is vital for the department because the state taxes withheld from the new employees form a pool of money used to fund the grant, Rhoades said. As a result, it is in the best interest of the company to meet the demands to receive the annual award back as a reimbursement. The department works closely with the Department of Revenue to ensure employee hiring goals have been met. If, in a particular year, the company fails to meet the proposed goals or drops below 90 percent of jobs or 198 jobs in the case of Ball Corp., it does not receive the tax break for that year. It is still eligible to receive it for the coming years, but the money for that year is lost, Rhoades said.

Finding and housing a workforce The companies will hire locals, according to Page Castrodale, executive director of Cabarrus Economic Development. To train the necessary workforce, the county turned to Rowan Cabarrus Community College and the larger North Carolina community college system. RCCC has agreed to partner with the companies and provide the necessary training, but no plans have been formalized yet, said Craig Lamb, vice president of corporate and continuing education at RCCC. Even with the hires being local, the city of Concord is facing a housing shortage due to explosive growth in recent years, said Margarethea Sheller, Concord’s housing manager. According to the most recent census data, the city’s population grew 21.4% between April 2010 and April 2020, making it 24th-fastest-growing city in the country. According to a 2019 Affordable Housing Market Study, the city needs an additional 3,000 units over the next decade to meet demand. In response, the Concord Planning Department plans to build and preserve existing workforce housing units. The city will purchase homes, renovate and then sell back the buildings at a market rate to eligible applicants. However, to ensure the units remain affordable, the buildings will be sold back with a deed restriction that will limit property prices and rental prices, Sheller said. Most recently, the city voted in favor of buying a group of vacant lots and soon-to-be demolished houses across the city to acquire the necessary land to build affordable housing. The city purchased four vacant lots and two houses for a total of $150,050, according to city documents. The city also partnered with the developer of the Coleman Mill property to convert the old mill into 152 affordable housing units. On Lincoln Street, the city is developing 28 affordable town homes: 20 will be for sale, and eight will be rented out. The city will not be able to meet the demand by itself and has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to further help reach the goal. In 2019, the city also established Concord Family Enrichment Association, a nonprofit dedicated to affordable and workforce housing. The city buys and sells properties, whereas CFEA focuses on managing and operating rental units. “We want to provide jobs for our citizens, homes for our citizens, and the associated amenities they want (and) need,” said Payne. “We feel this creates a quality of place whereby our citizens can live, work, and play without the need to leave the city for their basic life amenities.”

The county and city match funding In addition to the JDIG funding, the city of Concord and Cabarrus County oﬀered a combined $54 million in incentives to the three companies over the course of 7 years. Through the 85% Economic Development Incentive Grant, the companies will pay 100% of their property taxes based on new investment to the city based on an evaluation from Cabarrus County’s Tax Assessor’s oﬃce, Payne said. When I inquired about the kind of values or ways of approaching a child’s school-life that they learned from their parents and now use with their own children, the answers were touching, because they pointed to greater life lessons: “It’s important to do well in school, but just as important to have a personal life and time for leisure. I remember weekends being family time and enjoying each and every moment. We would be out and about every weekend: amusement parks, playgrounds, friends’ houses, swimming with my dad on Sundays then coming home to hot eggs and aloo poori.” “My brother and I were told to work hard, try our best and never look down upon anyone. We all contribute however we can, in our own way because not everyone has the same opportunities, resources and talent. It’s important to treat everyone with respect regardless of achievement and to remain humble.” “Do things that you enjoy. Purse your interests and passions because if you do, you will always be gainfully employed. Be creative. Be a happy student. Try your best”. The availability of diﬀerent resources and opportunities along with greater discussion on mental wellbeing are some things that are diﬀerent compared to when my friends and I were growing up, but some things remain the same including a parent wanting to provide their child with a life better than their own.

announcement, we knew it was the proudest day in their lives. Since childhood, excelling in school was encouraged in our home, but upon entering high school my siblings and I knew high school wasn’t about simply graduating, it was about doing your very best to get into a great college, which would guarantee a prestigious, lucrative career and ensure living happily ever after. During Indian functions, it would be obvious our home wasn’t the only one concerned about academic performance. The topic of SAT scores wasn’t always mentioned unless an outstanding score was achieved and parents, whose children were not graduating the same year, of course, would share tips and pass along information on how to make a child a more competitive college candidate, and even premed/medical school candidate. Being a well-rounded person, or appearing as one, also had formulas as the word was that some extra-curricular activities were deemed more favorable than others to college application committees. A child’s academic success was tightly tied to what defined success as a parent, and how well a child did in school was considered a reflection of their upbringing and the values they were taught. And immigrants in America had the additional burden of proving that the opportunities available in the land of abundance were not wasted, and what were thought of as “Western vices” such as dating and dropping out of school, were successfully fought oﬀ from entering the home. Talk of AP classes, GPAs and college majors would also seep into conversations with my Desi friends, but the topic would soon be changed, as it didn’t spark joy but encouraged competitiveness and insecurity, so instead we would talk about movies and music. Now my South Asian peers and I are adults who have been working in the real world for years in careers ranging from engineers to entrepreneurs, scientists to singers. The majority of my friends have children ranging in age from infant to ten years and I recently spoke to some of my Indian American buddies who have school age children on navigating the current academic landscape. As a generation that took schooling seriously and is now exposed to more information and discourse on issues such as mental health, learning disabilities, school-life balance and student burnout, I learned it is often friends and peer groups whom they turn to for help in achieving the school-life balance they strive for when it comes to their own children. When I asked a friend whether she feels being a student today faces more competition compared to when we were ten years old, like her daughters are now, she replied, “I’m glad I was a student then and not now! Kids are starting everything at an earlier age: music, sports, dance, etc. When we were younger, perhaps those with more access had these opportunities. I myself did one recreational sport and a handful of clubs. Now, many more families have access to great activities and resources because we are no longer the struggling immigrant parents... most of us can now aﬀord to put our kids in activities early on so that they will be ahead of the curve when they need to be. At the same time, it seems like the competition to get into competitive schools has increased and it may very well be due to the fact that kids are having more access to activities.” Saathee.com

comfort in order to function. Whenever we experience something out of that comfort zone, the reaction is often a mixture of fear, distrust, and in some cases… rage. But is it nature or nurture which causes us to think this way? All animals are born with an inherent survival instinct. While some have a keener sense than others, it’s an impulse that drives us to continue our existence, for better or worse. Some animals, including humans, are also gifted with a secondary trait of curiosity. Often these two traits will conflict with each other in fascinating ways. What’s even more interesting is that the latter has the potential to either grow or subside depending on various outside factors. Those “outside factors” are where nurture truly comes into play. Often the biggest influence on our behavior stems from varying degrees of guilt. If we are punished for doing something we’re not supposed to, we tend to remember that method of scolding, mostly, and why to not do it again. In my own upbringing, I was admonished plenty of times, as I could be a bit of a brat. Being told “no” was often interpreted as a challenge. Honestly, I still have that mindset, albeit to a much lesser degree now as opposed to then. Many of my early life lessons were also contradictory… to the point I often would seek out an outside source to discover which version was in fact the truth. I became quite the library addict because of this, as we didn’t have the internet to utilize back during the 1980’s. While the library of yesterday has been replaced by the Wikipedia of today, the drive to continue learning and extend my own layers of comfort has remained a large part of my overall outlook. As it’s often been cited, there are three sides to every story. I generally tend to at least attempt to observe them all before reaching a full decision or conclusion. It takes curiosity to learn and courage to unlearn. Learning requires humility to admit what you don’t know now. Unlearning requires the integrity to admit that you were wrong before. Learning is how you evolve. Unlearning or even relearning is how you keep up as the world evolves around you. While it can seem diﬃcult to see beyond those labels of familiarity we’ve ingrained into our minds, all it takes is an attitude which opens our thoughts to pursue alternative knowledge to fully understand and respect how your peers think and feel. A simple confession stating that you comprehend someone else’s choice, even if that choice is not something you’d personally seek is perfectly fine. Saying that you simply “don’t like it” without providing a concrete explanation as to why is not. So, to all those who have oﬀered me words with the intent to humiliate I say… take the time to learn why I do the things I do, look the way I look, or think the way I think. Perhaps you too will discover a new pocket of knowledge about yourself in the process… and understand how a little “free spiritedness” can open both your eyes and minds to a multitude of possibilities.

The “Help Needed” sign now welcomes me even above the “Masks Required” sign in a lot of places when I approach the door. I know friends and family who, as of this writing, are coming to the end of the large benefits that this rich country offered to keep the economy afloat during this pandemic. I know of no one who redefined themselves in this economy. I know of plenty of people who redefined their definition of “employment.” That’s the key. There has been much debate lately about there being more jobs open than willing employees available. The media is constantly reporting on established businesses shutting down because they are down to four employees instead of the 15 they needed to operate. Maybe that’s an adjustment this economy will now make. Lots of employers are raising wages that have been static since the 1980s, while the bosses made untold millions on the backs of working families. The Biden Administration is starting to openly attack billionaires who pay zero taxes for the unimaginable lifestyles they lead. But where are we as far as our own aspirations for the future? White collar or blue, a lot of us got used to sitting in our pajamas at home on incentives designed to save, well, I don’t know, the Fortune 500 companies? The billionaires all did pretty well in this pandemic. Lots of the working class also made the best money of their lives and got to sit at home because the companies got pandemic loans but went belly up anyway. Which brings us to today. I have talked to a ton of people who are making the same sort of statement to me: “I ain’t going back to that hell.” Several people have such high expectations plugged into the various unemployment programs that their chances of ever finding a job is about zero. Late at night, I sometimes wonder if something broke in us during the pandemic. Driving an hour one way daily, dealing with an incompetent boss pushing you to continually produce more is not worth it anymore. Did we get lazy – or did we wake up? I think the US economy, and maybe even the global economy, will morph into something totally different now. If I had that crystal ball, I would be a billionaire as well. But wages have always been a bad indicator of job satisfaction. We are suffering from a complex set of rethinking the world we are in. We have gone through mental trauma, but also through this once in a lifetime era of having massive amounts of time to analyze the beings we are. Some of us made enough money through this crisis, but others simply got cynical and redefined their lifestyles to live on a lot less. You know, live on even less than the profit-hungry CEOs told us was a living wage at 20 hours a week. Now they want to pay us more. Now they want us back making burgers. Now, we don’t want to. We don’t know the future, but for now, we want to think it over. “I am tired,” my dad said. He retired at 58. What were his priorities? What are ours?

The Triangle in North Carolina also has had a great share of local artists and talents that have performed on diﬀerent topics. I have seen a classical dance show in the dance style of Kuchipudi that has taught me about the life of Annamacharya, a 15th century saint who composed many songs to praise Lord Venkateshwara of Tirumala. In another show, I was able to travel through time and get a view of Krishna advising Arjuna. I attended another dance show where the poem Meghadootam by Kalidasa was performed in the Triangle and the stage was transformed to the flora and fauna of India where the banished exile sends his wife who lives in the Himalayas a description on a cloud messenger of the sights that he encounters. A stunning piece for the artistic creativity and mastery of the choreographers and artists, is a dance piece I had watched where the dancer transforms to the young child God Muruga. This artistic imagination of the choreographers showed through where the dancer becomes the young child seeing his parents as not “Mother” or not “Father” but “Ardhanareeshwara” and the confusion felt by the child was a piece that has relevance to the time period we live in as well. To add to all the splendid shows mentioned above, I was highly impressed from a dance piece from a group from Karnataka, India who are visually blind, who changed the way I thought of dancers in general and who can dance and perform. I felt fortunate that the Hindu Bhavan in Morrisville, NC had invited the artists to perform. Tying back to the concepts the origin story of dance/drama/theater from the Natya Shastra and its purpose in society, by watching these shows, I felt a transformational experience. The aim of the Indian classical arts is to provide the teachings of Dharma through entertainment. As the classical arts are intertwined with the philosophies and teachings of various texts, as an adult dance student, it is hard to separate the concepts of entertainment and the spiritual desire for transcendence. The feeling of transcendence comes into play when watching various shows. Various texts say that we are all one, we are divine, and that the divine is one by diﬀerent names and forms. Watching an artistic performance within the Indian arts can be a mode for achieving the feeling of transcendence from our physical form and associations of superficial divisions, so to see the fabulous creativity of the divine within all of us and amongst us. This article is part of a series about the journey and unique insights of an adult dance student learning classical Indian dance. An introduction to the experiences and a perspective of taking classical Indian dance as both an American and an Indian, and how this shapes her personal journey.

The nonprofit IndiaSpora has worked to organize this informative collection of essays. Veteran journalist Tarun Basu is the editor of this anthology where he edits essays written by varied folks, including Aziz Haniffa, Shashi Tharoor, Ajay Ghosh, and Laxmi Parthasarathy. The book has 16 essays written by influential and renowned Indians and Indian Americans. The essays cover everything from politics of the past few decades to Kamala Harris and the Biden administration, entrepreneurship and building businesses to technology, medicine to hospitality, science, academia and arts and entertainment, philanthropy to social and political activism. The role of women is also emphasized while writers from varied sectors talk about their own paths to success and offer their perspectives on the community’s progress through the decades. Influential organizations such as AAPI (American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin) and AAHOA (Asian American Hotel Owners Association) are also covered in detail. Their humble beginning, just like many Indian immigrants, has grown into two highly respected and influential organizations in America. In the world of film and Television, an essay talks about how Indian American actors have evolved “from stereotypes to household names.” The pathbreaking works of M Night Shyamalan to Mindy Kaling, among others, are explored. This book is part of the larger narrative of the Indian American experience and the community’s continuing progress into helping write and evolve America’s history, its forward stroll further into the 21st Century. Shashi Tharoor is among the essayists writing broadly about the India Diaspora with a brief, historical backdrop. Journalist Aziz Haniffa, one of the most well-known names in the South Asian communities via the newspaper India Abroad, wrote the prologue and intro. Tarun Basu, the anthology’s editor, wrote the chapter “From Struggling Immigrants to Political Influencers: How a Community Came of Age.” He writes about, “A fascinating and inspiring story of how an immigrant population from a developing country, with low education levels, became the most educated, highest-earning ethnic community in the world’s most advanced nation in almost a single generation.” MR Rangaswami, Founder of Indiaspora, who is an entrepreneur, investor, and community builder, wrote the chapter, “An Accidental Capitalist: How Indian-Americans Made Their Mark in Silicon Valley.” All the essays are instructive, concise and catalog the continuing story of Indian Americans and their lives and progress in the United States. Most Indian Americans will recognize similarities in their own family’s stories, whichever fields or endeavors they have pursued.
