Exclusive On Friday the 20th of November 2015 SAIndia had the privilege to attend a Casino Royale themed inspired event at one of Sandton’s finest lounges, L’Opulence. The event was glamorous and did not fall short from the theme at all, with Black Jack tables being placed and having to bet your own L’Opulence money along with James Bond inspired looks circling the venue it was definitely a 007 extravaganza! Thandi Dombo the owner and master mind behind the unique and elite venue allowed us to steal her away from her guests and talk to SAIndia about her passion. The talented entrepreneur who not only has a hospitality background and worked overseas in some of the world’s luxurious hotels, but has also been in the petroleum industry for some time. We asked Thandi what was her in-

spiration to create such a unique and elite brand and what her story behind opening L’Opulence was? The multi-talented entrepreneur told us that when she travelled to the Middle East where she fell in love with their luxury and elegance and used the colour gold as the staple colour of her brand because it represented royalty and class. The Arab women in the UAE were the muse behind her brand as they are the best representation of the word “opulent” which essentially means luxurious. Thandi’s goal to opening this venue was to make every one of her guests feel as opulent as she possibly could and has definitely accomplished it! With her statement themed events and her passion in seeing her brand expand Thandi Dombo is an inspiration and definitely a force to be reckoned with. KING of HEARTS

B

elonging to a humble household from Delhi, SRK, like a true superstar, excelled in sports and academics and received the highest honour of his school. A bachelor’s degree in Economics and rolling in for a masters’ in Journalism go on to prove the wits he had. SRK had his share of struggles. His father died of cancer in 1981, and his mother died in 1991 from complications of diabetes. After the death of his parents, his older sister, Shahnaz Lalarukh, born in 1960, fell into a depressed state and SRK took on the responsibility of caring for her. Shahnaz continues to live with her brother and his family in their Mumbai mansion. But these problems were soon over when he got his break for a TV show ‘Fauji’. Portraying the role of Captain Abhimanyu Rai, SRK made his way to the audiences’ hearts and producers’ mind. His debut movie ‘Deewana’ became a hit soon after. It’s said that SRK’s wife wasn’t quite pleased with the success of the movie, for he then stayed back in Mumbai. But as destiny had it, even his movies as the solo male lead like ‘Dil Aashna Hai’, ‘Chamatkaar’ and ‘Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman’ scored well at the boxoffice. And the rest as they say is history. Recently, when SRK gave his address at the University of Edinburgh, he intercepted his speech with references from his movies. But if his whole journey through all these years is traced, many a lessons can be derived. For one, when he acted in his first collaboration with Yash Raj Films ‘Darr’, many said that this decision would take his rising career down. But contrary to the popular belief, not only was Shah Rukh praised for his acting in the movie, there also began SRK’s life long association with YRF. What advice would you give to your younger self if you were making a debut in Bollywood now as a 25-year-old? I’ll tell him to do exactly what the old Shah Rukh Khan did. Just be yourself. You’ll find enough people on the way to help you reach where you want to go, but don’t make any plans. I’ll tell you a little story. When I had just come to Mumbai, two-three of us, all young actors, were chatting. I won’t name them because it’ll create a new controversy. One of them said, ‘I don’t want to get typecast.’ I told him, ‘Nobody knows you yet. You need to be cast to be typecast’. The other guy said, ‘I won’t do TV.’ I told him, ‘If you get a great offer, please do it. There is no right or wrong way of achieving successes. Like I’ve written in my book, ‘The best way to act is to act.’ How has the definition of success changed for you in all these years? For me, success means three things: to be able to pull along people who work with me to a level that is higher than where they currently are; to be able to do justice to my director’s vision and to be able to make people, who made me who I am, happy by making sure they like my film. At 50, as an actor, what is your dream now? It’s been my dream for a while to participate in a film that takes Indian cinema worldwide; something like “Life is Beautiful”, which is an Italian film, but speaks to everyone. I want to make my company (Red Chillies Entertainments Pvt Ltd) bigger and better.

Page 14

If you were to invite your favourite characters from your movies for a celebration, who all would make it to your guest list? Here we go: Rahul from ‘Dil Toh Pagal Hai’, Raj from ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’, Sunil from ‘Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa’, Don from ‘Devdas’, Kabir Khan from ‘Chak De! India’, Rizwan Khan from ‘My Name is Khan’, Mohan Bhargav from ‘Swades’, G.One from ‘Ra.One’, Rahul from ‘Darr’ and Surinder Sahni from ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’. What is your view on growing intolerance in the country? There is intolerance, there is extreme intolerance… there is, I think… there is growing intolerance. I respect people returning awards to protest against intolerance. We have made a huge thing about our meat-eating habits. How can the food habits of people be an issue? It is stupid… It is stupid to be intolerant and this is our biggest issue, not just an issue… Religious intolerance and not being secular in this country is the worst kind of crime that you can do as a patriot. At 50, we all would like to know the secret behind your energy, hotness and your witty nature? I love my work alot and I enjoy doing my films. So I work with all my heart and put in all my energy into this. I am thankful to everyone who found me hot and witty. Did you ever think you will be a super star one day? I had seriously never thought I would achieve so much. But whatever I have got is much bigger than my talent and my thoughts. I am very thankful to Allah for giving so much which I truly don’t deserve. Like a normal 26 year old boy I always dreamt of doing something big. But I had never thought I will move so far in life. I wish such a life for every hardworking youth in

www.saindiamagazine.com

the country. You are working with Kajol after a long time. How was the experience? Kajol is magical. She does everything wholeheartedly and she is exceptionally good at everything she does. In fact I miss her in all my films. She is a very good friend of mine and a part of our family. Shah Rukh, you created your identity without any family background. How difficult was that? When I entered the industry I did not know anything about it. I did all kinds of jobs and learnt everything. I had no pressures from anyone to prove myself. I was independent. But as on this date I will never want my sons or daughter to enter films. What is the idea behind doing one film in a year? I have dropped that idea. Now I want to do fifteen films in five years. That’s three films in a year. You had mentioned earlier that by 50 years you will quit smoking? I have tried very hard but have been totally unsuccessful in this one thing. I have not been able to quit smoking. But I am still trying. How do you want people to remember you? I want people to remember me for my efforts. I have always tried to make all my efforts successful. I have put in lot of hard work in my life to achieve a position in which I am now. Do you want to become like Amitabh Bachchan? No one can take the place of Mr. Bachchan. It is very difficult to be like him. He is and will always be the biggest superstar.

The film is set in the backdrop of World War II and stars Shahid Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan in the roles of a soldier and a filmmaker respectively. Renowned Bollywood hairstylist Adhuna Akhtar has given the desired look for Kangana with soft curls, since cutting her long curly hair was a lengthy process. As there were no electric rollers available during the time the film is set, the team used old techniques to provide the soft curls, in order to maintain the feel and look of that era. Shahid Kapoor too has grown a full beard for his role of an army officer in ‘Rangoon’ as he didn’t want any paste-up jobs for his look. Page 32

Karisma Kapoor to reunite with estranged hubby SAnjay Kapur News is doing it’s rounds that Karisma Kapoor might reunite with her estranged husband Sanjay Kapur. They already filed for divorce in May and the final settlement is due this November. The reason behind this decision is the alimony which Karisma has settled for but Sanjay not in favour to pay such huge alimony to Karisma and their kids for maintenance. Earlier, it was heard that Sanjay’s mother doesn’t favour her son’s girlfriend, Delhi socialite Priya Sachdev and so the separation might not take place but after going deep into the matter, it is learnt that the divorce deferred due to the alimony. Sanjay, who is still moving along with Priya is not ready to pay the huge alimony which Karisma has demanded. A few months Karisma and him has a huge showdown because she did not let him see his children, (10-year-old daughter and a 5-year-old son) and in return he stopped sending her money. And now he has refused to pay her the huge alimony.

“We have got Kriti and Gaurav for ‘Raaz 4’. They are good actors and fit the bill. It will be a love triangle,” producer Mukesh Bhatt said. The horror franchise ‘Raaz’ is produced by Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt under the banner Vishesh Films. The first and the third films of the series were directed by Vikram Bhatt, while the second one was helmed by Mohit Suri. ‘Raaz 4’ is presently in pre-production stage. The film will go on floors in December and is likely to release by the middle of next year, according to the producer. The first in the series was released in 2002 and starred Dino Morea and Bipasha Basu in the role of a couple desperate to save their marriage who moved into a new house in Ooty, only to find themselves in a ghostly conspiracy. Its sequel ‘Raaz: The Mystery Continues’ saw Emraan Hashmi playing a painter whose art predicts the future of a model played by Kangana Ranaut. The film released in 2009. ‘Raaz 3’ came out in 2012 and marked the return of Bipasha Basu to the series. She played a fading movie star who uses black magic to destroy her younger rival, played Esha Gupta, and hold on to her love Emraan Hashmi.

A source close to Sanjay explains; Karisma might get alimony but that sum would be just about one-tenth of his wealth. Considering his wealth, why should she settle for such a small amount? An out-of-court settlement is not working between them as Sanjay is again in no mood to bow down to the huge alimony. Karisma, who is rumoured to be dating Sandeep Toshniwal, CEO of Eurolife Healthcare Pvt Ltd is also going through a worse situation. Her relationship with Sandeep is not progressing further as Sandeep’s wife Ashrita is not ready to sign the divorce papers. In such a scenario, how does Karisma’s high-maintenance life go on? www.saindiamagazine.com

e it unforeseen heavy rain, slushy sand or flying insects, nothing could dampen the magnificent impact created by avant-garde designer Wendell Rodricks, whose show was the grand finale of Gionee India Beach Fashion Week in Goa. The organizers and designer battled Mother Nature to present a very successful and well attended beach-side show. The second edition of the three-day beach, resort, cruise and destination bridal wear ended with great fanfare, gorgeous fireworks and throbbing strobe lights. GIBFW S2 2015 is an exclusive UVAR Global property, powered by Roposo with Shopclues. com as the official e-commerce partner, in partnership with The Lalit Golf & Spa Resort. No other designer deserves the grand honour more than Padmashri Wendell Rodricks, the Master of Minimalism and pioneer of resort wear and eco-friendly garments in India. Presented by Gionee Smartphones, Wendell’s magnificent show was an unforgettable vision of style and glamour, as a dramatic ramp on the silver South Goa beach formed the perfect setting to conclude a glorious Season 2 of the fashion week. Known to present collections for the thinking, intelligent audience Wendell once again pushed the envelope to its ultimate limit.

His “Ahead of the Curve” collection was an experiment in cutting, based on Indian geometry, showcased by 44 models who strutted through 88 garments down a lavish runway. The collection featured curves, arcs and circles for seams, hems and silhouettes with intelligent but discreet detailing. Curves appeared ingeniously for blouses, trousers, tunics, kaftans with layered rings, swimsuits, sarongs and ripple pleated dresses. Staying true to his pastel resort colour palette, Wendell chose mint, magenta, peach, sandy beige, dusty blue and sage green as well as neutral black and white. Fabrics for the range included silk, satin, crêpe, georgette, linen, Malkha cotton and mulmul. Clever twisting into curves and pleats along with neo-tech touches created pierced effects on the collection. Having worked with geometric construction for decades, Wendell’s cutting technique came full circle in this finale. Keeping the dramatic quotient very high, Wendell brought in four gorgeous hunks on the ramp who disrobed to reveal sexy swim trunks. From then on, it was a high voltage, fast paced show with garment construction that kept the audience on edge. Cowl neck slashed h creations, crêpe ponchos, layered sleeve tops, black dolman sleeve dress and tunics, long-sleeved

shirts with curved accents were treated cleverly, while black-white colour blocking was intelligently executed. Batwing capes floated in, pleated long tubes, piped balloon pants, and the trio of pink, blue and black sack dresses with curved cuts followed the theme. Saris came in colour blocks of black, blue and white with loose blouses or ruffled halter tops. Black/white lean tube with layered cape, a green slip dress with attached flaps and the looped pleated shrug over a slim maxi were stunning. An occasional bodysuit or a sexy pleated turtle neck top with cape had beachwear appeal. The final draped sari gown in black was a stylish end to a great display. Menswear featured ink-blue tunics, collarless jackets, three versions of summer shirts/shorts in black/white, lots of drop crotch fluid trousers with kimono style belted jackets, pants with side flaps and micro ripple pleated trousers with side fins. Sensational, sensuous, scintillating – Wendell Rodricks Grand Finale presented by Gionee Smartphones was the perfect end to an impressive second edition of Gionee India Beach Fashion Week.

LEGAL LIFESTYLE

THE COHABITATION AGREEMENT: LIVING WITH WELL INFORMED EXPECTATIONS BEFORE YOU CHOOSE TO MARRY EACH OTHER

Adv. Veerash Srikison

he time of waiting for wedded bliss before experiencing daily life with your husband or wife has been slowly replaced with more couples choosing to live together before marriage. For some, they end up living together for many years with no valid marriage in place and continue to share the responsibility of running a household. Others may even go into a business venture together or have children while in this re- • The rights and responsibilities of you and your partner – financial and otherwise. lationship. Before you go any further you must know that there is no such thing in South Africa as a common law marriage regardless of how long you have been together. Therefore no matter how long you have been living together, the consequences of your relationship or whatever financial contributions you have made to each others lives, will not give you both the status of a validly married couple. In other words neither one of you will be entitled to a duty of support, maintenance after death from the deceased’s estate, automatic inheritance from the deceased’s estate and a division of assets based on a marriage in community of property or one with accrual. Your relationship is rather viewed as a cohabitation relationship, which has no law that regulates the rights of the cohabitants, since the Domestic Partnerships Bill, which deals with the status of cohabitants, has not been made part of our South African law yet. To prove a universal partnership will incur many legal requirements fulfilled and a heavy cost burden. This then poses both a financial and legal risk on both of you that would need to be managed in the event you decide to “break up”. One way to protect yourself and each other from conflict and a deterioration of your relationship, is to mediate a cohabitation agreement that will protect your accumulated assets if the relationship ends before marriage and to set out what your expectations are of each other. Such an agreement helps ensure that both parties understand what their rights, liabilities and assets once the relationship ends and should they continue their relationship to eventually marry, they will go into the marriage well informed of their financial status and responsibilities in the next phase of their relationship. This agreement should outline:

• How any property you own will be divided in the event the relationship breaks down. Such an agreement will set out clearly what property (cash, furniture, the house and other assets) each of you will leave the relationship with if you break up. You should both structure this agreement according to your circumstances and adapt it if your conditions change. For example, if one partner will put a career on hold to raise the children, make sure that the agreement provides, that in the event of the end of the relationship, he or she will leave the relationship with a fair share of the assets as well as a stipend for living expenses. Also to agree that you will both mediate a parenting rights and responsibilities agreement with regard to any child(ren) born of the relationship so as to maintain the child’s contact and care with both biological parents. This agreement is much like a pre-nuptial agreement and helps clarify each of your financial commitments. This however is not a pre-nuptial contract should you choose to marry each other civilly and a separate marriage contract would need to be entered into prior to your nuptials.

mulated over the course of the relationship, will set out the distribution procedure of such assets. • You will have an insight into what marital regime you would like to enter into before marriage based on how you both currently run the household and accumulate assets ie. a marriage in community of property, marriage out of community of property with accrual or a marriage out of community of property without accrual. • You may choose, during your time of cohabitation, to manage your own money while allowing yourself to witness how your partner manages their finances, • You and your partner would also ensure that your wills are up to date and that you have provided for each other in the event one of you dies. • A review clause in your cohabitation agreement allows for you both to revisit the terms and conditions when the circumstances of your relationship changes and to make amendments accordingly. Sukhwinder as he makes himself comfortable for what promises to be an interesting Sunday afternoon for us.? The 42-year-old has been a maverick presence in the Hindi film industry since his debut in 1986, when he sang a few lines in Subhash Ghai’s blockbuster ‘Karma’. He has come far since: It would be fair to say that many of Bollywood’s cult songs in the last couple of decades can be attributed to Sukhwinder: From ‘Chhaiyya Chhaiyya’ (Dil Se) in 1998 to ‘Ramta Jogi’ (Taal) in 1999 and to the more recent slow-motion ‘Angreza’ (Bhaag Milkha Bhaag) last year. But the hits didn’t just fall into his lap. He had to slowly work his way into the limelight. His process included travelling around the world and understanding different forms of music. Much of his time was spent in the US and the UK. This exposure was invaluable: He was able to incorporate new styles into his music when he finally came back to Bollywood and worked with AR Rahman in creating the iconic ‘Chhaiyaa Chhaiyya’. “I always had that song inside me

his award-winning singer has done playback for a variety of Bollywood heroes including Farhan Akhtar, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Arjun Rampal, Anil Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Ajay Devgan, Abhishek Bachchan, Ritesh Deshmukh, Tusshar Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi, Sanjay Dutt, Ranbir Kapoor, Kunal Kapoor, Shabbir Ahluwalia, Rohit Roy and Sunny Deol.

a huge statement from this talented singer. He had sung many songs for Salman’s Film and throughout all the years, he has established a great respect for the Khan as according to him, Salman is one of the very few actors of Bollywood who is desire-less and makes so many sacrifices for fans. Sukhwinder Ji has worked with Both Salman and Shahrukh and When He was asked to talk about them he said, “Both do their work with complete honesty. While Shah Rukh does it with perfection, Salman does it with masti. Salman woh aadmi hai ki kahi mil jaye toh main uske pair choolu. If there would be five people from the industry who are desireless, Salman will be one of them. Look at his fitness. Just to meet people’s expectation from him, he is ready to do all kinds of things and make so many sacrifices. He is naughty, and the most handsome guy. But dil ka darvesh hai where he feels that if he speaks the truth then it will reach his fans. He is not at all aggressive when it comes to his career and he works with so much sukoon. I know of thousands of people whom he has helped.” “But people always remember my songs picturised on Shah Rukh. I think the reason is that the energy he brings to the screen is amazing. Since my voice too has a high-energy point, it gels well with Shah Rukh’s personality,” the singer explained. Sukhwinder also made an appearance on television as one of the judges for STAR Plus’ musical reality show “Star Voice of India 2”, but he found the experience far from pleasing.

Besides his playback work he has released the albums Nasha Hi Nasha and Is Dil Se where he sings his own compositions.

“It’s better not to comment on my stint as a judge. Things are very different when scripts in such shows bind you,” he said.

Sukhwinder’s greatest success is arguably the song “Chaiyya Chaiyya” for Mani Ratnam’s 1998 film Dil Se..., composed by A. R. Rahman, for which he won the “Best Male Playback” award at the 1999 Filmfare Awards in India. A remix of the song was used in Spike Lee’s film Inside Man. According to an interview in The Times of India,

So, what about the current crop of singers that such shows are churning out?

“That was my first song and it is very special to me. In fact, when I first met A R Rahman for the project, he thought I was a lyricist. However, I somehow convinced him that I can sing. When he heard me sing he was so happy with my voice that he straightaway asked me to sing the “Chaiyya Chaiyya” song.”

“As for the current crop, we do have a few good singers ... they are promising too, but the system is not really open to newcomers. The struggle phase is long. So most of the time, good singers don’t last and give up too soon,” he said. since I was four years old. I had dreamt it and I had whistled it,” he says. One of the most talented singers of Bollywood Sukhwinder Singh in a recent interview said, he would like to touch Salman Khan’s feet. It was

His popularity increased after he sung ‘Chak De India’ - an Indian patriotic song in the Hindi film ‘Chak De! India’. He is often recognized for his playback singing for Shah Rukh Khan. Five of the six songs he recorded for SRK have gone on to become major hits - “Chaiyya Chaiyya” from Dil Se.., “Dard-E-Disco” from ‘Om Shanti Om’, “Chak De India” from ‘Chak De! India’, “Haule Haule” from ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ and “Marjaani” from ‘Billu’. Another major hit is the Oscar-winning song “Jai Ho” from the movie Slumdog Millionaire. The singer’s dressing sense would have given Jeetendra, the actor from the eighties known for his proclivity for white, a serious run for his money. Sukhwinder then quickly puts on the air conditioning to full blast, saying he needs to cool down. He blames the heat on the long steam bath he had that afternoon. Meanwhile, his two Pomeranian dogs start to bark. “This is my family,” says Page 64
