hah Rukh Khan - The King of Bollywood, the ideal husband, the doting father and a great human being. The qualities, which most people dont possess. In this special Valentine issue, let’s hear what his darling wife Gauri has to say. “Shah Rukh is a very thoughtful, kind gentleman. He is a great husband and a great father. He has never said ‘no’ to me for anything. He is so good to my family, my parents, my brother and sister-in-law. He looks after them so much that I could never do even one percent of what he does for us and for his family. Inspite of being so busy, Shah Rukh stays very close, very involved with the kids. He really is a great dad. He wants to know about their school, their friends, their education etc. And since he is a video games junkie, he and Aryan are best buddies there, always hooked to the Play Station. He pampers me a lot. He has this knack of making you feel special. I have always felt special around him. He may be a superstar but he is an absolutely normal husband and father at home. He also comes around in whatever I want. He has his own way of expressing his feelings.”
pushed along. So we’ve never really sat down and even chatted about our relationship. If you ask me, ‘where are we headed?’ You know, we are just flying with everything that life is taking us through... I have no idea how to be without this relationship. It’s been so long. Whenever I think of our relationship...I think the one word that comes to mind is ‘space’. Being an actor’s wife...or a public figure’s partner is not an easy place to be. There are impositions on time and space that take away most of what’s considered a normal relationship between couples. Also I am not an easy person to deal with. I come with all the trappings of complexity, over-sensitivity and self-obsession which a movie star is made up of. It’s a parallel life and emotion that most do not understand. To be able to deal with it you need someone who can be patient, understanding and mostly a friend who knows when to enter or leave that parallel universe. Gauri has somehow balanced that admirably, without making it feel like an effort or a favour. It’s a relationship from her side of being extremely selfless in a very selfish environment. Maintaining dignity in a publicity - crazy world.
Shah Rukh, you have been an envious couple. What’s that one zing in your relationship that makes people jealous? We’ve known each other since 1984. That makes it what, almost 30 years? It cannot be defined. Gauri tells me that because of work, I’ve spent such little time with her that our relationship still seems fresh. We came to Mumbai right after marriage, for a honeymoon. Initially, we thought we’d give it a try for a year. It’s 22 years now. So much has happened in our lives that we haven’t had the time to sit and discuss, ‘what is our relationship about?’ And I think it’s a good way to be, that we haven’t had the time to talk about our relationship. We have one child who is taller than me now. And my daughter will be taller than Gauri in a year or so I think. And now, we have another one... We have a house and we have a name. I think we’ve just been sucked up by life and
Let’s begin with you and your wife. What brought you and Gauri together? I have known her since I was 18 and she was 14. She was the first girl I asked for a dance. I was shy with women and I just went to her house, told her that I will marry her and then drove off without listening to her answer.
could be on all the 365 days of the year.
Some qualities that you admire about Gauri? The qualities that I admire in Gauri most is that she is at immense peace with herself. She is at rest and satisfied with very little. It’s strange because of the way her public persona is portrayed, visa-visa her glamour and upmarket appeal...she is a very simple middle class, satisfied and clam person. Not easily excitable or given to emotional outbursts. Extremely balanced and basic. She essays each role or her persona without making a big deal about it. What is one thing she likes about you? Ha-ha, how am I to answer that, but after 30 years, I can say that she loves my high energy levels. I will never say no at any point in time. Also I am 100 percent committed to her and our kids. Of course I have professional commitments, but yes, I will never make them feel lonely. Shah Rukh, we all know that you are such a fitness freak and you have maintained yourself so well over the years...
Did you’ll celebrate Valentine’s Day then? Well, Valentine’s Day celebration never used to happen during our days. I do not remember having gifted anything to my near and dear ones. But yeah, we can surely extend our love to our close ones. Probably if you have been too tied up and have not been able to go and meet them, then this is the best time to show your love for them. It could be your mom, grandma or some old forgotten friend you can pay a visit to. But why on this day only, it www.saindia.com

Let me tell you the real reason why Deanne has called me over, she suffers from stage fright and she does not know what to say. So I am just a speaker or filler for Deanne. With due respect to people that Deanne has been training, they are so fit that I do not figure anywhere in that category. So I will only speak on her behalf and not as a fitness freak. I am extremely unhealthy. I have many many bad habits and I suffer from lots of injuries, whether I like them or not, they are part of me and they stay with me. I injured my shoulder in Dec 2012, it’s actually a genetic injury of my shoulder bone and I got operated on in mid May, that period from December 2012 has been so bad for me. Unlike other people who will take care of their diet and exercising when they are injured, I began feeling sorry for myself and indulged in bad habits like eating whatever I wanted to and not really exercising giving excuse of my injury. I ran in to a mode of depression where I started questioning myself, Why Me? Just till about two months ago, I had a tremendous amount of self pity. I would be totally in bed, not taking any efforts to get up and exercise or move my shoulder. I watched a lot of movies. In short, totally laid back. And then I met Deanne who was working on this book.
Was she the one who made you realize? To be honest she kept on telling me, but it was not her who made me realize. It’s the title of the book. Shut Up and Train. I stopped listening to my inner voice. My surgeon had told me that the injury was too big and I needed to take it easy and relax completely for five months. Then I got this little system to find out if I was unfit. You can do it too in your bathroom without clothes. There has to be some light or sunlight, in a way that you can see your own shadow on the wall. And if you see any protrusion in the mid section of your body that means that you are really unfit. What did you notice about yourself? Touchwood, I don’t have any protrusion. I don’t exercise too hard, but luckily my waistline has been 28 or 29 over the years. I am very proud to announce that. That’s the ideal waistline. What would be your advice to all those who are averse to exercising? Yes, it is very hard initially after a long period of rest, or after a long day at work or with busy schedules. It is very painful and stressful and as we all know the results come in too late, especially if you are not on any kind of enhancers like steroids, which ideally should never be taken. The idea is to just get fit, though not very muscular. You don’t have to get the body like John Abraham or Hrithik Roshan or Lara Dutta, because for that you need a certain level of penance, belief and lifestyle. Most of us can’t do that, but all we have to do is stop hearing all the negative inner voices. Go to the gym, not necessary that you spend two hours there. There are a couple of things that you don’t do in the gym, don’t listen to music, don’t put on the air conditioner, don’t chat around with friends, don’t exchange telephone numbers, keep the phone somewhere away at the side. You don’t even need to have great clothes while going to the gym, though it looks nice, if you have them. So you down to the gym, you just have to spend no more than 35 minutes, but you have to be completely focused during that time. You cannot give yourself an unchallenging goal as far as your fitness is concerned. Keep two things in mind, you can never overbuild your body and your goals can

never be small for your workout.
What’s the reason behind your workout? I mean by God’s grace you have a fantastic body…. For me the reason for working out is very simple. I have a son now who is 6 months old, a son who is 16 years old and a daughter who is 13 years old. I had kept my body for my son and daughter in such a way that when they are growing, I want to play football with them, I want to play Hockey with them, I want to swim, surf, jump and do everything with them, without feeling any aches and pains. I think I kind of crossed and I was quite happy doing it. Now that I have another baby, I have to again get in to a fitness regime for him. I have to be fit till I am 60, when my little one will be 18. I believe that age has nothing to do with your body. It’s just about weights. It’s not about how much weight you can carry, it’s about whatever weight you can carry do it more often and regularly. I have a dream to have my body like Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and challenge them when I reach my 60’s. What do you do as part of your workout? Initially when I started working out for ‘Dard E Disco’, I took a lot of advice from my friends, Deanne being one of them. I read a lot of books and gained inspiration from them. Deanne told me that you do your basic stuff and lift weights. That concept just fit in to my mind. Along with other regular stuff, I do make it a point to lift weights. The simple logic is, unless you have muscles, you will not be able to burn the fat in your body. Lot of people say, that I walked for 40 minutes. Believe me that walk is rubbish as far as your physical fitness is concerned. Of course it feels good and
fresh, but in the case where you have to be fit, you have to cut your weight with muscles. So weight training is extremely important.
Has there been any moment in your life, when you were told to shut up and train? Well I have not been told to shut up and train. I have been told to keep quiet and train. And that also not of late. I have realized it myself now and I have at least that much respect in the industry. Shut up does not really mean in the literal sense. It just means that don’t look out for excuses when it comes to physical fitness and training. How do you remove time from your busy schedule? Trust me, after work, I reach home by 11 at night, I put the kids to sleep, spend time with the family and I start working out at 2 – 2.30 in the morning. My trainer Prashant is so good that he trains me at any time of the day. In fact he comes to my place at 12 in the night and sleeps at my place. I have told him so many times that you will get tired, but he inspires me saying that we will work out whenever we have time. Anyone from the industry, whose body you envy? I don’t envy anyone’s body but I do appreciate their bodies. Hrithik and John. And now even Ranbir. Even Farhan was awesome in Bhaag milkha Bhaag. They are all my friends and I know that they all have worked very, very hard to stand at a place where they are in terms of fitness. It’s an amazing achievement. Among the ladies, I think Lara and Bipasha are fantastic and even Deanne herself. You said you have many bad habits; do you have any resolution to change them to get fitter? Smoking, I really want to cut down on that and eventually just stop. It’s a priority in my mind. Again I have very irregular eating and sleeping habits, because of work schedules. But I do try and maintain regularity within the irregularity. I see to it that whatever time I sleep, I sleep for at least 5 hours and Insha Allah, I get very sound and peaceful sleep. As far as food is concerned, sorry to say, I am not a 4 time meal a day or 6 meals a day person. I eat proper food and my advice would be sit down on the floor, with legs bent inwards, so that 1/3rd of your stomach gets compressed and it seems that we are full. One should drink lots of water and drink water often. How do you workout on outdoor shoots, especially when you are out for a long time? I now make it a point to take my trainer along for shoots. And since it does not take more than 30 minutes, my trainer figures out ways and means to workout. If there is a gym in the hotel, there’s nothing like it. And if there is no gym, we kind of make a club house and then we have other fun ways to workout. Any particular exercise that strains you or you avoid doing? Yes, I can’t do overhead exercises and shoulder exercises, for the reasons you all are aware of. And because of my spinal injury there are lots of exercises that I can’t do. I used to do 40-50 pull ups at a stretch, but now I can do only 2-3 since my neck stars paining. I can’t even do bar exercises, because as soon as I stretch my www.saindia.com
13
arms, my back and shoulder go for a toss. So most of my exercises are leg exercises, dumb-bells and very light weights.
At your age, you still look young and sexy… but is there any time that you feel your body protests certain things, like you want to do something and your body does not allow you to? If given an opportunity, your body will always tell you to rest and sleep as they are the simplest things that our mind wants to do. It has to be mind over matter of everything else. You don’t need big weights, you need a big heart and you are doing it for yourself and for no one else in this world. I don’t do anything to look young and to beat the competition. I do it for myself. Honestly speaking, in the bathroom, when you remove your clothes, you should like your own self. And even if no one likes you, you should like yourself. That’s more than enough. How do you beat stress? Everyone has their own individual ways of beating stress, some listen to music, some go for a drive and some just lie in the bathtub with rose petals. As far as I am concerned, I read a book, or watch TV or sometimes even write. Honestly

speaking the way it works out best for me is sweating it out for 30 minutes.
Do you ever feel that you should have been more muscular? I never wanted to be more muscular. The muscles should be according to your body type. I am happy with my muscles. What is it that you love eating, but you are told to control? I think that’s a wrong question that’s put to me. I eat very little and I am genuinely a very healthy eater. I mostly eat grilled food. My upbringing has been like that but I have never made a huge diet plan. I will never refuse to eat anything. I am a food lover and not fussy about food. I eat whatever is given to me. Will your injury allow you to do action [packed movies like Krrish or Dhoom? Yes, as I said it’s all in the mind. I will do one if I am offered. It definitely hurts a little but you cannot pamper injuries. Any New Years fitness pledge? I want to be really, really fit by March. I want to have a body structure, which I never had before.

It’s not just you, Salman too has expressed his desire to work with you and has appreciated you a lot? Definitely it feels great when Salman says such good things about me because if you all know he was the one who first noticed me. I was doing an ad with his friends in Rajasthan. So, he noticed me first of all and he was the one who offered me my first film. I had got an acting offer from Salman before getting chosen for ‘Om Shanti Om’. What happened then? Unfortunately, I had to deny his offer as I was not ready to face the camera. Are you going to hike your price now? For me films are a very creative process. I don’t do films for money. Our industry is very small and everyone is aware of everything. I always believe that everyone gets paid for what they deserve and I never like to talk about money. How is it going with Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Happy New Year’? I feel great, we have been very lucky in terms of the script we got. It is the kind of the script and characters we get in a film, which enhances our on screen chemistry. I hope that ‘Happy New Year’ is as special as my previous films.
very disciplined and completely dedicated towards staying glorious. My beauty and wellness regimen is simple, eat right, drink plenty of water and sleep well.
Your diet plan? Pooja has a very well planned diet for me. ON WAKING UP: One fruit within an hour of waking up. POST WORKOUT-BREAKFAST: 4-5 egg whites + bread or 1 bowl roti/upma/poha AFTER TWO HOURS: 1 glass of vegetable juice. LUNCH: 2 rotis or 1 bowl of rice, 1 bowl of dhal, 1 bowl vegetables and 1 cup of yoghurt 2 HOURS LATER: 1 cup of coffee and 1 or 2 biscuits AFTER ANOTHER 2 HOURS: 1 fruit EVENING SNACK (IF REQUIRED): 1 bowl bhel or 1 open vegetable sandwich DINNER: 1-1½ rotis, 1 piece chicken or fish, 1 bowl of vegetables and salad AFTER DINNER (IF REQUIRED): 1 fruit or 1 glass of warm milk
Last year has been simply tremendous for you and you are going to walk away with all the awards? I think there have been some really good performances last year and I am a little disappointed that all my films have been released in the same year. I actually wished that they were all sort of spaced out. It has been a special year for me. It been great, not just box office wise but in terms of the appreciation I got in these films. All the films have been very special for me. Getting an award is in itself a very great feeling, rather a very proud feeling that your work has been appreciated. I do not take awards for granted.
You have an athletic body and why not, it’s in your genes? As a race, we are blessed with good genes and great skin. I love adventure sports and work hard at keeping fit. My mother never allowed us to do anything much with our skin. At the most I would use lipstick and what was then known as Is it true that you have now signed on a ‘rouge’.” To date I ensure that I hydrate film with Aamir Khan? my skin, use an SPF-cream to guard against I would like to. No, I am not satisfied. There is still that drive in me and that fire in me to want to do a little more. It’s not wrong to want and one is never happy with what you have, that is just human nature. You have to have something, you get that and then you want something else. So yes, I want one more role, one bigger film,” she smiles. “You need that desire because if you are satiated you will stop giving your best. Therefore, there is a difference between being lazy and believing I have it all and being overly ambitious. As a person, you need to have a reality check. And different people have different ways of functioning. For me, there is a larger something that I want to achieve, but at the same time I also tell myself, ‘baby steps’ …a bit at a time
You have worked with most of the biggies in the industry, who’s next now? Every year I am asked this question (which Bollywood actor I would like to work with now), but I hope in the next one or two years I will get to work with Hrithik, Salman and Aamir, since I have not worked with them.
We have spoken a lot about work, we have heard that you are a total fitness freak? My fitness mantra is “know your body type and build a little exercise into your daily routine”. I didn’t have to slim down. But I worked hard towards further enhancement. I do not take my body for granted. I am

talking about it... Am I? Really even I don’t know about it. Come on, you keeping quiet about him and you always spoke in open about Ranbir when you were dating him? I think that was a stage in my life when I genuinely believed that I had fallen in love. I think that it was a relationship that I thought would go beyond. For whatever reasons it didn’t work out. And since then I think I’m very, very scared to invest emotionally in a relationship. But you and Ranbir still share a great chemistry, on-screen and off-screen too? My equation with Ranbir is very, very clear. The best part is that he and I are very clear about where we are in our lives today, as far as our equation is concerned. So there’s no reason for anyone is his life or anyone in my life to be worried about or concerned or insecure about our equation. How did you deal when your relationship with Ranbir ended? Was it really tough for you? It was very, very difficult for me because, I think, somewhere that relationship became my world. I was new to the city, so his friends became my friends and that life became my life. And I don’t think I made the effort to have my own life. I think that relationship really taught me a lot when it ended. It’s made me a better person today and he says it himself. Who is the first one you think will get married, you or Ranbir? Looking at the current scenario, I think Ranbir will be the first to get married. Your best on-screen kiss was with Ranveer, Ranbir or with Saif? Ranveer Share some of your weaknesses? When it comes to shopping, I splurge on shoes. I have such an OCD about organising my things that I sometimes drive myself crazy. But it can also be very satisfying when everything is in place. I am a big foodie and have no sense of good food and bad food. I can eat absolutely anything! My main weakness is dessert and too much indulgence makes me gain weight. Deepika’s defeating spree…. Katrina Kaif – When they both started off, Katrina used to be way ahead of Deepika working with the three big Khans of Bollywood. But with the success of ‘Chennai Express’ and ‘YJHD’, Katrina became the one to lag behind and to top it up, Deepika bagged Farah Khan’s ‘Happy New Year’, opposite SRK. Katrina was the original choice, but due to date issues it went to Deepika, which will prove to be Deepika’s biggest victory over her professional and personal rival. Kareena Kapoor – Kareena Kapoor again lost to Deepika personally and professionally. Personally because, her movies with Saif Ali Khan were big successes. People loved their pairing, as compared to Saif and Kareena in ‘Tashan’ and ‘Agent Vinod’. Professionally even though Kareena hit the 100 crore club, with ‘Golmal Returns’ and ‘3 Idiots’, her role was very minimal and the film got in to league, due to Ajay and Aamir. While Deepika got all the meaty roles in all her movies, which were well appreciated.
18
www.saindia.com
Priyanka Chopra – Priyanka’s meaty roles put her in a very different league than Deepika. But that has not put down Deepika’s spirits. She is getting stronger by the day, in terms of her performances and friendships. Yes, we are talking about SRK. SRK had been supporting Priyanka, professionally and personally. However due to certain reasons, their friendship took a backseat and Deepika became SRK’s favourite. They shared a sizzling chemistry during the promotions of ‘Chennai Express’ and now she has again bagged a role opposite him. Anushka Sharma – Anushka and Ranveer made a couple even though they denied their relationship. However their on-off relationship died a natural death and Deepika came in Ranveer’s life. Even though Deepika does not agree to date him, their chemistry is very visible at parties and social do’s. Even though professionally Deepika is
ahead of Anushka, Anushka was the favourite of ad agencies. She bagged lots of endorsements, post ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’. But Deepika too entered the endorsement market and in very little time, managed to out run Anushka in this field as well. Sonam Kapoor – They made their debut on the same day. While Deepika’s ‘Om Shanti Om’, was a super duper hit, Sonam’s ‘Saawariya’ flopped. And the trend still continues, with Deepika defeating Sonam professionally. While last year, Sonam did have ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ and ‘Raanjhana’ to her hit list, she has never got an opportunity of working with the big names of Bollywood. Sonam of course was considered to be a style icon, with her amazing sense of fashion, Deepika too has not remained far from that race and that might be giving Sonam some nightmares. Her 2013 red carpet appearances, definitely stole the show.

After 33 years, Amitabh Bachchan met Rekha with love
I
t is a rare moment when the megastar of Bollywood Amitabh Bachchan, the next door actress Jaya Bachchan and evergreen Rekha meet and greet each other by dumping the past issues. Let bygones be bygones, at the Screen Awards Amitabh Bachchan after 33 years shared a smile and joined hands and said Namaste to the actress whom he was rumoured to have dated at one point in time. Clad in a silk saree and decked in heavy jewellery, both the beauties, Jaya and Rekha looked very cordial. Rekha not only shared pleasantries with Big B but she also held Jaya’s hand and had a chat. Amitabh and Rekha were last photographed whilst in the same plane, but they totally ignored each other. In those years, Rekha and Amitabh met several times during numerous events but never smiled at each other or greeted. After so many long years, almost after 33 years since they delivered their last hit together, ‘Silsila’, Big B met with Rekha so lovingly. They recently also bumped into each other at Vishesh Bhatt’s wed-
ding reception but they did not exchange pleasantries. Rekha and Amitabh’s mystery love story always keeps the gossip mill churning. The two first acted in hit movies like `Do Anjaane` (1976) and went on to deliver hits like `Muqaddar Ka Sikander` (1978), `Mr Natwarlal` (1979), `Suhaag` (1979), `Silsila` (1981) and a few more. Their chemistry was always talked about and they were considered a sizzling onscreen pair of the past. Grapevine also buzzed that married Big B used to meet Rekha at her bungalow while shooting ‘Alaap’ after three years of marriage. Their romance bloomed over the years and they acted in many hit movies and started to spend time with each other. Their proximity hurt Jaya and she revolted and made it clear to Rekha that she won’t be able to take her place, never. Their dramatic romance ended with YRF’s film, ‘Silsila’ in 1980. Since then Big B and Rekha never talked to each other and two years down the line when Amitabh met with an accident on the set of ‘Coolie’, Jaya and Big B’s relationship gripped.
Katrina Kaif takes a dig at Deepika Padukone
K
atrina Kaif had only one release in 2013 i.e, Yash Raj banner ‘Dhoom 3’ and her competitor and exgirlfriend of Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone had four blockbusters last year. Basking in the joy of ‘Dhoom 3’, Katrina speaks her heart out about Deepika and said that she is not related to Deepika in any way. When the diva was asked whether she has an equation with the ‘Chennai Express’ actress, she replied, “No…I don’t have any equation with her. I am cordial with everyone but I have no equation with Deepika. Everyone is here on the merits of their work and if someone has three hit films this year, someone else will have three hit films the next year and so it goes on. The focus will shift to that person accordingly and that’s the way it should be.”
In the last episode of the chatshow, ‘Koffee With Karan’, Kareena spilled the beans about Katrina and Ranbir Kapoor’s relationship and referred to Katrina as her sister-in-law. When Kat was asked to comment on Kareena Kapoor’s remark, she gave a very cold reply, “I took it in good humour, which is exactly the way it was said. I do feel people have gone on a bit too much but this will soon blow over and everyone will forget about it.” Katrina and Deepika are the two reigning queens of Bollywood. They are the hot favourites of filmmakers as well as endorsers. Not only on the professional front, they share cold vibes in their personal lives as well. Ranbir Kapoor dated Deepika Padukone at one point in time and this truth never goes well with Kat who is the present ladylove of Ranbir.

Senior police inspector Chandrakant Bhosale of BKC police station confirmed the news. “A Marathi actress named Sharvari lodged a complaint with us. It seems that the bodyguard didn’t allow her to enter the area even though she had an allarea access pass with her.”
38
The actress was pushed by SRK’s bodyguard and she fell down. A source present at the event adds, “Ravi was escorting SRK to the venue and with a huge crowd swelling around the star, this actress was pushed away by Ravi. She then fell on the ground.” After the complaint being lodged, Ravi was called to the police station and he was let free after being warned. No FIR has been lodged in this case. However, a source close to SRK says that it was Sharvari who had misbehaved with SRK’s staff. “The cops didn’t find Ravi guilty of any improper conduct. He has been working for SRK for over six years now.”

Aishwarya won’t let Aaradhya to try on any make-up
A
ishwarya Rai Bachchan may be one of the leading ladies when it comes to being a brand ambassador of a cosmetic company. But when it comes to her daughter, Aaradhya, she is dead against encouraging her daughter to taking a fancy towards the makeup kit. Aishwarya is the face of L’Oreal in India. In fact, she was recently seen at the launch of L’Oreal’s new Kajal – Magique, where she grabbed eyeballs after shedding all the post pregnancy fat and looking glamorous in a black Dolce and Gabbana gown. But she strongly disapproves of her daughter getting fascinated by makeup kits at a wee age. At a recent event, Aishwarya when asked if Aaradhya took a fascination to the makeup kit like all other two year olds, she was reported to have said, ‘It’s just too early! I may be a brand ambassador of a cosmetic company that i am very proud of, but I am not in favour of that.’ Aishwarya has been associated with L’Oreal Paris for a decade. She has been the consistent representative from India and has been an integral part of the brand communi-
cation strategy across the world and mainly in her home country, India. She has also represented the brand as a global brand ambassador at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Although Aishwarya is one of the most sought after beauties in India, a powerful personality and one of the richest ladies in the country, she is a simple traditional person at heart which she vouched for when asked her opinion about Indian customs and traditions. She replied ‘We are rooted, consider values in the highest esteem, we are simple people. We are very hard working and we know how to retain respect, love and commitment, tradition. Being Indian is being beautiful.’ At the same time, she is not judgmental about others and is flexible when accepting others for what they are. On failed marriages in Bollywood, she said ‘I don’t think it is fair to get judgmental and limit relationships or strengths or inability to hold themselves or limit it to showbiz. What happens in society is each to his own. What would be fair and respectful is belief in people to allow them to live their lives and finding strength in the choices they make.’ www.saindia.com

Boman Irani’s son Danesh involved in a 425 crore QNet Scam
I
t is reported that Bollywood actor Boman Irani and his son Danesh were involved in a Rs.425 crore scam of a multi-level marketing firm QNet way back in 2007-2008, but the actor vehemently denied saying that he only attended a function organized by the firm and he was photographed then and neither he nor his son were involved in the scam. “My son had worked as an agent like thousands of others when he had graduated from college, during 2007-2008. He then left for the USA for his MBA. His earnings and residuals for his hard earned efforts as a multilevel marketing agent are all taxed and above board. Even though the individual has made this complaint, no authority including the EOW has intimated us for any inquiry. Rest assured, me and my family are law abiding citizens of this country,” the actor said in a statement. Complainant Gurupreet Singh Anand who had filed an FIR against QNet in August last year, approached the Mumbai Police and submitted a two pages explanation where he mentioned the name of Danesh and his involve-
ment in the scam. Mumbai Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW), is investigating the matter and said that actor Boman Irani is not involved in the multi-crore scam. “Boman Irani has no role in the QNet case. His son Danesh earned a substantial amount of money through QNet and we are probing his role,” Police Commissioner (EOW) Rajvardhan Sinha told PTI yesterday. Meanwhile, the EOW has already issued a notice against billiards champion Michael Ferreira (75), QNET founder Vijay Eswaran and three of his business associates after they failed to turn up for a questioning session after repeated requests. Nine QNet team leaders have been arrested so far for allegedly fooling investors by selling products like magnetic disks, herbal products and holiday schemes and taking money from them. The accused were charged with cheating and forgery under relevant sections of the Prize, Chits and Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act, 1978. However, the Malaysia-based MLM firm has denied any unlawful activity.
It’s not Arjun Rampal, Suzanne dating another Bollywood actor
Aamir Khan breaks down
ell, speculation is high that Suzanne’s extramarital affair is the reason behind her and Hrithik’s separation. Suzanne who ended her 13 year old relationship with Hrithik is said to be in love with a married Bollywood actor. The unknown actor does not want his name to be revealed as he is already married. When the couple announced their break-up, Arjun Rampal’s name had also come up and it is said that Arjun’s close association with Suzanne drifted Hrithik and Suzanne apart, but the news was denied by both Arjun and Suzanne. In a statement issued by Arjun, he said, “It is very sad when friends close to you take a decision to separate. These are the hardest times for them and we must be sensitive towards this decision, rather than creating speculation and rumours. I read in the news about the same time as you all, about my involvement in this marriage. It saddens me deeply that rumours become inevitable during celebrities going through such times. Mehr and I wish them only peace and love through these times and support them as friends should and we wish them and their families well, always.” Suzanne too rubbished the rumour of the extra-marital affair and said that Arjun is a family friend and it is not correct to drag anyone’s name in the matter. She said the decision is totally individual choices and no one is to be blamed. Arjun and his wife Mehr Jessia also attended Suzanne’s new store launch. According to a leading entertainment website, Suzanne is definitely seeing someone from Bollywood but it is not Arjun Rampal. According to a source quoted by the portal, “There’s no truth to the rumour that Arjun and Mehr are distancing themselves from Suzanne. In fact, the three partied together in Dubai recently through the New Year season.” A wife of a known Bollywood actor, on account
amir Khan who debuted on the small screen with the social awakening television show, ‘Satyamev Jayate’ has started hosting the second season of the popular reality show and the actor could not hold his tears as he interacted with the victims and heard about their painful stories. The second part of ‘Satyamev Jayate’ starts with the issue of violence meted to women. On listening to their heart-breaking stories, the host and superstar broke down. As the actor was unable to hold back his tears, the shooting was put on hold for half an hour. The episode deals with inhuman tortures meted to the women and what they had gone through. On hearing their stories of hardships, he got emotional. Like the first part, ‘Satyamev Jayate’2’ also deals with social stigmas. In the last season, Aamir Khan deals with issues like female foeticide, drugs, medical malpractice, domestic violence, child sexual abuse, untouchability and a few more. He was spotted crying in the last season too. The show received a huge response and government too reacted strictly and implemented rules on a few issues.

of anonymity, reveals, “In fact, Mehr is extremely close to Suzanne and even supported her in her decision to go solo.” Suzanne, according to the star wife, is not seeing Arjun Rampal, but she did “lean on a male shoulder in her troubled times.” Perhaps, Arjun and the industry are very well aware of the married man whom Suzanne is dating. During Suzanne’s new store launch postseparation with Hrithik she said, “I still believe in love and have a feeling that happy things are in store for me in the future. Comedian Kapil Sharma in deep trouble
I
t seems time is not in favour of comedian and producer Kapil Sharma who runs the show ‘Comedy Nights With Kapil’. Earlier he was in trouble as one of the most popular characters of the show ‘Gutthi’ left the show over payment terms. No sooner had Kapil learnt to run the show without ‘Gutthi’ that he has again found himself in the soup after cracking a joke about ‘pregnant woman’. Kapil has attracted wrath from activists and social workers for cracking a joke on pregnant women. Kapil has received a notice from The Maharashtra State Women’s Commission. A notice has also been issued for the channel on which the show is run. The Maharashtra State Women’s Commission has asked for an explanation and has also summoned them for a hearing. During one of the recent episodes of ‘Comedy Nights With Kapil’ which was aired on 5th January, Kapil cracked a joke about a pregnant
woman delivering a baby on a potholed road while commuting. The joke was not received in the right spirit and was considered insulting and derogatory by women activists. The two NGOs viz. Bhartiya Muslim Mahila Andolan and Kaydeshir Wagne lodged a complaint with the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission. They demanded legal action against the comedian and the channel. “We have sent the producers a legal notice demanding an explanation. They are expected to reply within 15 days”, said Susiben Shah, chairperson of the commission. Apart from the joke on pregnant woman, the activist groups also objected the portrayal of two women characters on the show. Susiben Shah further said, “The two characters of ‘daadi’ and ‘bua’ were also found to be objectionable. The ‘daadi’ is shown drunk. That is not how our ‘daadis’ are.” Several TV actors have also voiced their opinion on the joke cracked by Kapil. Kanika Maheshwari from ‘Diya Aur Baati Hum’ doesn’t find it humorous. She said, “Many times, such jokes are hurtful. Once, on ‘Nach Baliye’, Bharti Singh (stand-up comic) had compared Bruna Abudullah (actor) and her boyfriend Omar Farooque to a rikshawala who got the keys to a Mercedes. Though people laughed on the sets, I felt it wasn’t in good taste.” On the other hand, a fan of the show, Ira Shah, a 19 year old student said, “I have read about incidents where people have delivered in an auto or a train, so what’s the big deal about this joke?”

Item girl Misti Mukhejee’s parents held for running porn business
R
ecently, the Oshiwara police raided the plush Meera Cooperative Housing Society and seized more than one lakh pornographic CDs and DVDs. The flat is owned by IAS officer and current General Manager of a Bombay Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking, Om Prakash Gupta and currently it is being rented by small time actress and item girl Misti Mukherjee’s brother and retired engineer father. Misti’s father and brother were questioned for supplying pornographic material. Nearly two lakh pornographic CDs, was recovered from Misti’s flat. Police said that they are involved in pornographic business and allegedly sold to customers and distributors. The housing society is the homes of several top-level bureaucrats, IAS and IPS officers of Maharashtra. On investigation, police found that neither Mukherjee’s family nor Gupta has fulfilled the necessary procedure of putting the house to rent. Police said that they will take strict action if any lapse is found in the legal procedure of renting a flat. In his defense, Gupta said that all the legal formalities were done before renting the flat to Mukherjee. Interestingly enough, when police raided the spacious three-bedroom 15th-floor flat, stacks of CDs and DVDs were spread all over the house. “In the kitchen, bathroom, hall and bedrooms of the residence. We thought we had entered some

CD and DVD library,” said Senior Police Inspector Nasir Pathan of the Oshiwara police station. The raid was carried after police received a tip off, “We had received specific information that a large a number of pornographic CDs and DVDs were stashed in flat number 1502 in the C-wing of the housing society,” Pathan said. Gupta is currently staying in a government flat opposite the Cricket Club of India (CCI). When contacted, Gupta admitted that Mukherjee was his tenant. “The family has been staying in my flat for the last six years. I am not aware of what was going on inside the flat,” he said. “There were no complaints against the family. Whatever happened is very unfortunate and they will be removed immediately.” Misti Mukherjee is a small time actress and a popular item girl in Bollywood. Flat no 502 was rented in Meera Towers and Misti Mukherjee’s father Chandrakant Mukherjee (62) and Brother Samarth Mukherjee (30) resided in the flat. Her parents were detained. Senior spokesperson of BEST said that Misti and her family are not involved in any doubtful activity. The spokesperson said: “Mr Mukherjee and his family have been residing in this flat at Meera Tower, Oshiwara for past six years. It was rented out to them by OP Gupta. There were never any complaints against the family. Whatever has happened is very unfortunate and they will be evicted immediately.”

trip queen Poonam Pandey had a horrific New Year’s Eve. She was chased by several drunken men after her performance. Poonam had been to Bangalore to perform on New Year’s Eve and it had been a nightmarish experience. “Never again! Never will I perform at a New Year’s Eve celebration. It’s much too dangerous,” says Poonam who described the situation as her biggest nightmare. Narrating the traumatic experience Poonam says, “I agreed to perform in Bangalore because the money was too tempting. They offered me a bomb. How was I to know what the evening had in store for me?” She hardly performed 10 minutes and the male crowd went wild. “They were all male and they were all drunk. I had 15-20 of my own bouncers and the organizers had provided about a 100 guards. But it wasn’t enough,” says Poonam. As soon as her performance ended, all the drunken men broke the cordon separating the stage from the audience and tried to get hold of Poonam. Says Poonam, “I realized that evening that no amount of bouncers and bodyguards can protect you from a drunken mob. The men who jumped on to the stage had only one thing on their mind. And they were not thinking with their minds. They were thinking with another part of the anatomy.” Poonam gets goose bumps while remembering the situation. She managed to
run away fast from them but they chased her to her room. “I’ve never run so fast in my life. I am sure I gave Milkha Singh a run for his money. I ran upstairs all the way to my room. So there I was, running into my room with the mob in hot pursuit and the bodyguards and bouncers chasing them. It’d have been comic if it wasn’t so scary.” Poonam has vowed never to perform at a New Year’s Eve function. “Believe me, it is just not right. There are only men and they are all drunk. I’d advise all female celebrities to avoid dancing for New Year’s celebrations. No amount of money is worth your Izzat and your life. I’ve never been more scared in my life. Never again!”

R
umour is doing all the rounds that TV star turned Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput already married his long time girlfriend Ankita Lokhande. The couple took the plunge after Ankita’s parents raised objection on their live-in relationship. A source informs, “When Ankita told her family that she wants to live-in with Sushant, her family was outraged. They opposed the move at first and then insisted that the couple get married. Sushant and Ankita gave in to their demands and it’s just that they have chosen to not
announce it due to the demands of their respective careers”. The couple is said to have entered into matrimony in Ujjain last year before living together in Mumbai. Manyata Dutt diagnosed with Tuberculosis
S
anjay Dutt’s wife Manyata Dutt was diagnosed with TB and the actor has filed for a 30 day parole extension. Sanjay has applied for parole extension and his application is yet to be considered. Manyata is not doing well on the health front. However, the divisional commissioner of Pune will decide on the actor’s parole extension. The 37-year-old was admitted to Parel hospital on January 8th. Manyata was diagnosed with a liver tumour and heart ailment. She was under the care of cardiologist Dr Ajay Chaughule of the Global hospital. When contacted, Dr Chaughule only said that “Manyata Dutt is quite unwell”, refusing to divulge any details about her health. Hospital sources informed that Manyata had undergone several tests. “Until all the results are out, we cannot say anything about the final diagnosis,’’ said a senior hospital official. Actor and husband Sanjay Dutt who is out of jail on parole for a month has been with Manyata ever since she was admitted to hospital. Sanjay Dutt is serving a three year jail sentence after being convicted of possessing illegal firearms in relation to the March 12, 1993, Mumbai serial blasts. His leave application
was granted and he was released on parole on December 21. Dutt applied for parole on the grounds of his wife’s ill health. Doctors at Global Hospital had revealed that Manyata had two health problems-cardiovascular disease and a tumour in her liver. This is the third time Sanjay Dutt was granted leave from jail. In the first two cases, he was granted furlough on health grounds and the third time he applied for parole on the ground of his wife’s poor health. His lawyer said that Sanjay can seek an extension in case his wife’s health does not become stable. A source informed, “He was wailing, saying that he cannot take this anymore. He told the hospital staff that he has suffered many losses in his life, including his mother Nargis and first wife Richa Sharma, who both succumbed to cancer. The sight of Manyata in the hospital bed, triggered all those memories.” Sanjay Dutt has also moved his wife to Lilavati Hospital in Bandra as the kids will be allowed to see their mother there. Kids below 10 years of age are not allowed at Global Hospital where Manyatta was being treated. Hence Sanjay decided to move her to a place where the kids and mother could see each other.

date for his wedding and whenever he feels so he will pop the question to Priya and will get married. Before dating Priya Runchal, John was in a relationship with Bipasha Basu for nine years. The couple mutually called it off. Once talking about Priya Runchal, he said, “Priya and I met through common friends. Definitely there was an attraction, but it takes much more than physical attraction to be in a relationship. I am in a happy space right now. She is extremely supportive and prefers to be away from the public eye. If she calls me at 11.30 in the evening and I am caught up with something or am tired, she says I should rest or go to sleep once I am done with work. It means a lot to me. She gives me space and I give her hers. She is currently in London to pursue her two-year full-time MBA, so ours is a long-distance relationship. We will get married when I take a break from work.” John and Priya were last spotted together during the movie screening of ‘Shootout At Wadala’.

Deepika breaks her silence on Ranbir’s wedding
T
he new season of ‘Koffee with Karan’ is throwing up all the elements of filmy gossip necessary to create a buzz around it. The latest trailer of the chat show that is doing the rounds in the national channels is the anchor Karan Johar with the two dusky beauties of Bollywood, namely Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra. The episode is to be aired on Star World soon. The centre of attraction in the episode seems to be young Deepika. Deepika is well remembered for her fiery interview on the sets of ‘Koffee with Karan’ in the earlier season. At that time Deepika was recovering from her break up with Ranbir Kapoor and didn’t hesitate to make sarcastic remarks about him. Speaking about him in the Season 3 of the chat show she has joked on the playboy image of Ranbir Kapoor and even suggested Ranbir to “advertise for a condom brand”. This interview raised many eyebrows and created a stir. Naturally the interest around her next interview is pretty high. However this time around, it seems that the actress has sobered up a lot. Speaking about her past relationship with Ranbir, she stated “relationships became my world”. She also said while answering Karan’s question that, “He (Ranbir) will be the first to get married”. Recalling
the past, she even stated that it was the time “when I genuinely believed that I had fallen in love.” Deepika also said, “I think it was a relationship that I thought would go beyond. For whatever reasons, it didn’t work out. Since then I think I am very scared to invest emotionally in a relationship”. Speaking about her feelings towards love she also added, “I don’t know how to just casually go for a date. I do not know how to be in this ‘in-between dating’ but not committed thing”. Ranbir and Deepika seem to have truly buried their past and moved on with life. They recently did the movie, ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ which was a big hit. Deepika also stated at the show that they don’t have awkwardness between them as they were lovers in the past. Deepika says, “As far as our equation is concerned, the best part is that we both are very clear about where we are in our lives today. So, there is no reason for anyone to be worried or insecure about it” Priyanka Chopra was asked about her performance in ‘Barfi’ and speaking about the comparison of her role in the movie to that of Vidya’s in ‘Kahaani’, Priyanka said, “I think my performance was a lot more nuanced and different. Vidya carried the film ‘Kahaani’ on her shoulder but the film was entirely on her”

I am sure that they want to tie the knot this year.” The couple has been dating for a year and they first made their public appearance together during Shilpa Shetty’s party thrown to mark Raj Kundra’s success of his first book. The couple was first spotted together during actor Jackky Bhagnani’s birthday party in 2012 when Bips was spotted arriving in Harman’s car. Last year when Bipasha celebrated her birthday in Goa, Harman was spotted getting cozy with the actress in the pool. Pictures of their relationship got crystal clear when Harman flew down to London to meet his ladylove who was shooting for Sajid Nadiadwala’s ‘Humshakals’. Bipasha rang in her 35th birthday with Harman at her Khar pad, which was attended by her parents and younger sister, R Madhavan, Rocky S, Dipannita Sharma, Sophie Chaudhary, Shamita Shetty, Shilpa and Raj. Says a friend present at the party, “The theme of the evening was pink and white and hats were mandatory. The fare on offer was all-Bengali and the party continued till the wee hours of the morning, first on her terrace and then in the apartment.” While Harman and Bipasha were tight-lipped on the issue, Harry Baweja informed, “I am in a narration. I will speak to you later.”
A
n FIR has been lodged against Colors channels and host Salman Khan for hurting the sentiments of the Muslim. This year the theme of the show is Jannat and Jahannum. Contestants are sometime thrown to the Jahannun where they had to face many problems and sometimes they are put in Jannat where they received all the facilities. Advocate MA Qawi Abbasi said Mohammed Fasihuddin had approached the Sixteenth Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, seeking direction to the police to register a case against Big Boss 7. Jannat and Jahannum are sacred in Islam and the religious people are unhappy as repeatedly the channel is making a mockery over the issue. Trouble seems to be never ending for the show. Of late Sofia Hayat lodged a complaint against Armaan Kohli for assaulting her during a task and following which Armaan was arrested and later released on bail on surety of 50,000 rupees and now again the show ran into trouble for hurting Muslim sentiments.

ike Sonam Kapoor and Sridevi, Nargis Fakhri also welcomed 2014 in a bikini. The ‘Rockstar’ actress was photographed holidaying at a beach resort in the Maldives with boyfriend and actor Uday Chopra in the two piece bikini. The ‘Dhoom 3’ actor was shirtless. On various occasions, the couple was spotted together but Nargis always denied being in a relationship with Uday. Uday had also tweeted saying, “Nargis did you know we are related. Your future sons’ father is my father’s son.” After which his ‘Dhoom’ co-star Abhishek Bachchan said: “Get a room kids”. However, these tweets were instantly removed. Last year, bikini clad Katrina Kaif was photographed vacationing in Ibiza beach in Spain with Ranbir and this time Nargis and Uday Chopra hit the headlines. www.saindia.com

he combination of Grecian and Amrapali like silhouettes gave the creations an unbelievable touch. Tarun’s clever folds turned the lovely models into Goddesses, as tulle sparkled for rouched lehengas, churidars emerged under drapes, loose jersey pants with cowl neck kurtas, harem pants and overlapping tunics caused a gold rush on the catwalk. The gold fishtail gown with crystal encrusted bodice and the pre- stitched lehenga/sari creations were visions in innovative construction. Boleros gave gowns an exciting touch and fabric tassels at the sides of figure hugging creations cascaded down seductively.
THE ENCHANTED FOREST
THE MAN OF THE HOUR
Men’s wear was given a major boost by Tarun with draped dhotis created from Kanjeevaram saris and sherwanis with intricate detailing. Giving a clever fashionable twist to the bandhgala, Tarun added a jersey stole in the neckline. Model and actor Asif Azim was seen scorching the ramp in one of his creations. There were structured cummerbunds in fusion form, in shades of jade, pleated royal blue and jewelled choices. Rich velvet sherwanis had embroidered necklines and cuffs but often pleated collars replaced lapels. Tarun Tahiliani’s bridal collection which was a superb display of craft, style and couture will gladden the hearts of brides and grooms when they say their “I Do”.

Straight from the beautiful forest came shades of pink, ivory, beige and red to create fairy tale garments. Colours of the peacock blue were one of the highlights of this collection while necklines
were innovative and classic saris were teamed with Obe belts, capes or bustiers to impart an International touch. Intricately embellished dupatta, floor length kurtas with traditional crafts, saris with heirloom borders and lehengas with a forest of flowers matched the theme of the section. Inspired by the flamenco dancer, hints of Spanish touches were observed in the long full trains for the concept saris. Bling was understated but very much there to offer a stylish option. The red bridal Saat Pheras creations were breathtaking in all their beauty. The final pale blue lehenga with lavish crystal embroidery and pearl studded work with silver touches was what brides’ dream of all their lives.

tark black raised squares dotted the ramp, while the recessed frames lined the stage to create an abstract but glamorous bridal ambience. With the buzz words being luxury, opulence and elegance, the duo offered the New Age bride a stylish but practical line. The gold leaf and booti designs emerged in a fragile delicate form when the shimmering colour was encrusted onto varying shades and blended with black, mustard, brown, red, wine and orange to create a vintage glamorous story. From the mini flared peplum tops with embroidered yoke to white embellished sheath gowns, paneled kurta with dusty gold 3D shoulder interest, trapeze brocade jacket with high pleated neck and the gold peplum blouse with shoulder appliqués, the show was set for many scene stealers. The sexy bare back gold gown, the rouched gathered clustered maxi, fan shaped cropped pleated top and moulded white gold ensembles were great Western offerings. White drop-waist mermaid gowns with gold work, black empire line peplum blouses over net skirts and the gold and brown layered halter flamenco dresses with encrusted bodices revealed an International look for the creations. Red jersey sheaths had gold detailing, while a slinky number with beadwork flared into layers of net and a will-power wine coloured gown with gold embellishments was moulded to the curves of the model. Lehenga and cholis dazzled in tulle with rich colours to please the most fastidious ethnic dresser. A bright red toga sari was draped over black churidars teamed with a bustier and gold yoke mini shrug. Shades of maroon brought in chiffon flared kurtas or were draped in jerseys with shimmering neck detailing. The stunning gold jersey lame’ sari worn with a contrasting white net choli was a dramatic offering. The long sleeved baby doll peplum tops over lehengas had intricately pleated high necklines for added drama. Two creations in prints that reflected the works of art from a bygone European era were reserved for the lehenga with golden peplum blouse and asymmetric kurta matched with a net skirt. Men’s wear was stylish with heavily embellished Jodhpuri jackets, sherwanis teamed with dhoti pants and some innovatively draped kurtas with gold embroidered shoulders. The lame’ Bandgalas were worn over printed kurtas and a multi-coloured embellished short sherwani came with slim pants. A stark Jodhpuri jacket appeared with gold cuffs and collar and when it came to discreet elegance it was a self designed maroon Jodhpuri coat that stole the show. The final two fish tail lace and net gowns with breath taking embellishments completed the collection. The front row comprising of celebrities like Ritiesh and Genelia Deshmukh, Shamita Shetty and Sonal Chauhan were seen having a good time. As the show stopper it was India’s ace tennis player, Sania Mirza who glided in gracefully wearing a white net one-shoulder gown with gold drapes and embroidery scattered over the bodice. For creations that spell magic around the wearers on the most important day of their lives, Shantanu and Nikhil had a “To Die For” collection that could truly take one’s breath away.

RECIPE
MASOOR DAL MASALA 15 MINUTE DINNERS
M
asoor Dal Masala is probably one of the quickest and easiest Indian dishes to make; in about 15 minutes you can have dinner ready. This particular recipe comes from my Mum (no surprises there) and as you’ll see the masala is made slightly differently compared to usual but the ingredients used in this one add a nice spice and subtle tang to the flavour. Serves 2
What we need 41 cup masoor dal 4 1 tomato 4 1 tbsp butter 4 1 tbsp olive oil 4 1/2 tsp mustard seeds 4 1/2 tsp cumin seeds 4 Pinch of asafoetida powder 4 1/2 leek, finely chopped 4 3 cloves garlic, grated 4 1” ginger, grated 4 1-2 tsp salt (check according to taste) 4 1 tspgaram masala 4 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 4 1/2 tsp paprika 4 1 tbsp tamarind paste (optional) 4 1 tbsp tomato paste 4 Handful fresh chopped coriander
whistle goes off. Whilst the dal is cooking heat oil and butter in a pan. Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds and asafoetida. When they begin to sizzle, add the leeks. Cook until golden brown and add the garlic and ginger. Let it cook until slightly brown and the salt, garam masala, turmeric powder and paprika. Mix well and the tomato paste. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Once the dal is ready, remove the tomato from pressure cooker and add it to the masala. Mash it well and mix together. How we do Mix the masala with the dal and stir well. Add the tamarind paste and corianPlace dal in a pressure cooker. Add water so it is about 1” above the dal. Add der. If you find the dal is too thick, add a little water. (Do re-check salt!) the tomato in the water and salt to taste. Cook for 10 minutes after 1st Bring dal to boil and you’re done! Best served with rice

Call to
THE VALLEYS Rahul Sharma
R
ahul thrives on challenges, loves to crossover boundaries, take un-treaded paths and try the never before. The result? …a series of hugely successful ‘firsts’ in the list of his musical adventures. For instance he is the first young musician (not to mention the only Indian musician) to collaborate with the world-renowned pianist Richard Clayderman to not just cut an album but give live concerts too. And, he is the youngest Indian musician to perform at the WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance) festival in the UK, as well as the Edingburgh festival in Scotland (2001). His performance along with his illustrious father Pandit Shivkumar Sharma was the first ever concert of Indian music in Egypt. Also, he is the first young Indian classical musician to contribute music for a commercial Bollywood feature film all by himself. And, probably the youngest music director for whom Lata Mangeshkar, the queen of Hindi filmdom agreed to sing in his very first venture. Not just that, there are consistent additions to his list of awards like the Indo American Society Award (1998), Bollywood Music Award for promising New Music Director, New York (2002), MTV (IMMIES) Music Award for Best Classical / Fu-
sion Album 2003 and so on. Along with all these innovations, experimentations Rahul continues to give his concerts of pure Indian Classical Music across India and beyond her shores. Obviously, his has a vast spectrum where popular music, collaborations, sublime, new age music, high-energy trance, folk music, thematic music, psychedelic sounds and film music co-exist very comfortably with his first love – Indian Classical Music. Rahul derives his inspiration from nature. He loves to travel both physically and through net surfing. He tries to remain connected with spirituality by meditating every day. Floating in and out of varied sounds, novel creations and huge accolades, Rahul is always striving to give his best to his audience. He is aware of his responsibility as a musician, as a santoor player. His grandfather Pandit Umadutt Sharma had the vision of making santoor, an obscure folk instrument from Kashmir, to be established on the classical concert platform. His father went one step ahead and made santoor indispensable in the world of Indian classical music. And, from the looks of it, Rahul is all set to make it indispensable in the world of music, across the globe. And why not? He cherishes the invaluable treasure of traditional classical music that his father has helped him imbibe and has his eyes set on the globe. Rahul Sharma, he is the new face of tradition. He is “India-in-the-Twenty first Century” personified.
What made you learn to play the santoor? How much did your father influence you? As a child, I learnt to play the harmonium from my father. But when I turned 13, I learnt to play the santoor, and I was quite sure that I would be able to master it. By the time I turned 17, I was completely into music. From ‘96 onwards, I started accompanying my father to his concerts. And yes, my attraction towards music is because of my father. Tell us about your daily riyaaz. Like most musicians, I do riyaaz daily. Be it a singer, tabla player or santoor player, practice makes a man perfect. The more you practise, the more you improve. I usually start my day with riyaaz
64

in the morning and I do it in the evening as well. As compared to other musicians, you began to take your career seriously only after you turned 17. Do you feel you lost out on some years? Since I belong to a family of musicians, I never felt like I was away from music or that I started late. I am happy the way my career has shaped up.
What inspires you in your music? The Himalayas inspire me the most. And apart from my dad, I have learnt a lot from Zakir Hussain as well. Tell us more about your collaboration with pianist Richard Clayderman. After one of my concerts in France, he came to ask me whether i would like to do an album with me that would fuse Indian music along with French. We recorded it together and it was called The Confluence. It was nice working with a great musician like him. Over 40 albums at the age of 37…what’s the secret? Composing is my first love. To me, music is a way of expressing my ideas and philosophy. Be it classical music or fusion collaborations, I’m always looking to do more. I wanted to take the santoor beyond its association with nature, romance and relaxation. Fortunately, the music companies I’ve worked with have believed in my kind of music.
and giving him tunes that he felt were the best… It was a humbling experience to work with Lataji and Ashaji in my very first film. The music worked and the same banner offered me ‘Hum Tum’. However, I had to decline it because I thought composing music for films would hinder my concerts and albums. Today, I’m better prepared to handle both films and santoor. However, I am happier doing my own thing. Films can happen once in a while.
You like exploring the interconnectedness of music, philosophy and spirituality. Indian classical music has a spiritual connect. Exploring ideas musically gives me a high. For example, my album ‘Zen’ owes itself to my reading of Osho’s philosophy. The album ‘Time Traveller’ was the result of my fascination with the time machine and the sci-fi movies I’d watched as a child. ‘Antariksh’ was a space album I launched when Chandrayaan was going to the moon. Why haven’t you taken your association further with film music? My first movie ‘Mujhse Dosti Karoge’ was a learning experience… it was all about going with the director’s vision, matching up to his thinking
On collaborating with Kenny G? Kenny has this amazing ability to improvise. That’s what jazz musicians do and also what Indian classical musicians do, we don’t read and play, we improvise a lot. I thought the saxophone and the santoor would complement each other and when we tried them out, it was beautiful. Collaborations work if both musicians’ styles complement each other and the compositions are strong. He didn’t have any attitude, he’s Kenny G, after all, known the world over, but he was very down to earth and open to the idea of me composing for him. If someone approached even me, I’d be a little wary that, if he’s going to compose for me, let me see, will I enjoy his compositions, how’s it going to be? But I guess when he heard my work, it perhaps was a kind of reaffirmation, that okay, I enjoy Rahul’s style and if he composes for me, it’ll be okay’. When he’d play my compositions, they’d turn out a slightly different style from what I’d given him or what I’d imagined, because he’d add his own elements to it, without disturbing the entire melody. And his sense of melody and rhythm and timing is so amazing that it was a pleasure working with him.

Himachal Pradesh for Adventure Lovers H
imachal Pradesh has a number of attractions, besides its forts, palaces, temples, hill resorts and wildlife sanctuaries. The unlimited diverse blessings of nature that manifest itself as snow covered mountains, grassy meadows, thick pine forests and fruit orchards. The mountainous landscape of Himachal Pradesh, at the foothills of the Himalayas, is made up of a series of valleys and snow covered peaks. Himachal Pradesh is deservedly sought out by adventure lovers. Alternatively, Himachal Pradesh provides a refreshing escape for those who are craving crisp mountain air. The architectural heritage of its many princely states and colonial buildings built during the British Raj in India further add to the splendor of the state. In this section, we will cover some famous tourist attractions that you must cover on your sightseeing tours of Himachal Pradesh.
Bhakra Nangal Dam Bhakra Nangal Dam has emerged as a very popular tourist place in Himachal Pradesh. It was aptly titled as the ‘New Temple of Resurgent India’ by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. This dam is the highest straight gravity dam in the world.
Shiwaliks and has soft sandstone and clay rocks.
Deoli Fish Farm Deoli Fish Farm, which comes under the Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh, came into existence in the year 1962. It is spread over an area of 4.4 hectares and has 14 nursery ponds and 2 big brood stock tanks. The hatchery was originally used only to stock seeds for Gobind Sagar reservoir. One can enjoy the sights and natural beauty of Shimla, Dalhousie, Dharamshala, and Manali among others. Shimla Shimla used to be the summer capital of the British Raj when they ruled India. Now it’s the state capital of Himachal Pradesh. This wonderfully cool and charming town sprawls along a mountain ridge, enveloped in oak, pine and rhododendron forests. It’s quite famous for its colonial style buildings and historic railway. The old Christ Church, with its beautiful stained glass windows, is one of Shimla’s most prominent landmarks. Also to be enjoyed are the mesmerizing views from Scandal Point, and the Viceregal Lodge (try to be there for the sunrise or sunset) on Observatory Hill. There are plenty of adventure sports and short hikes on offer in the vicinity as well.
Suketi Fossil Park Suketi Fossil Park was the first park in Asia that to be situated on the site where the actual fossils were unearthed. Situated at a distance of 21 km from Nahan, this park is sited on the bank Manali Manali, with its soothing backdrop of the Hiof Markanda River. It lies on the upper and middle malayas, offers a blend of tranquility and adventure that makes it one of northern India’s most popular destinations. You can do as little or as much as you want there. Located in the Kullu Valley, it’s a magical place bordered by cool pine forest and the raging Beas River, which give it a special energy. Dharamsala and MacLeod Ganj Nestled a short distance from each other in the Kangra Valley, the towns of Dharamsala and MacLeod Ganj are home to the exiled Ti-

betan Government. The Dalai Lama resides in Dharamsala, and many Tibetans have followed him there. You can expect to find a strong Tibetan influence in the area, with culture being the main attraction. People flock to Dharamsala and MacLeod Ganj to undertake Buddhist meditation and philosophy courses, Tibetan cooking classes, Tibetan language courses, and to receive alternative therapies. Volunteer work is another popular pastime. Those interested in sightseeing will find some fascinating museums, temples, gompas, and monasteries. Tsuglagkhang Complex, the official residence of the Dalai Lama, is a highlight.
Spiti Rudyard Kipling described Spiti as a world within a world. This remote, high altitude area of Himachal Pradesh is tucked away against the border of Ladakh and Tibet. It’s only been open to foreign tourists since 1991, and still remains relatively unexplored. Part of this is due to Spiti being barren alpine desert that’s covered in heavy snow for a high proportion of the year. Getting to Spiti involves a long drive, most popularly from Manali. The constantly evolving scenery is unforgettable and well worth the journey though. Dalhousie Dalhousie and the Chamba Valley are lesser explored areas of Himachal Pradesh. If you’re after striking, unspoiled views then Dalhousie is the place to find them. Spread over five hills, the town bares the distinct stamp of the British Raj. Its hotels are particularly reminiscent of that era. Kalatope Wildlife Sanctuary is located a short drive away from Dalhousie. It’s possible to walk through the sanctuary but a permit is necessary for a vehicle. Those who dare to venture further into the Chamba Valley will discover fascinating ancient folklore, temples, and tribes. Getting There There are five major zones that draw the maximum visitor or act as base camps for most
