Ranbir Kapoor has a charm which just cannot escape the eyes of filmmakers. Even though he has delivered certain flops he is not someone who can be written off easily. He has this time proved his charm and charisma to woo the audience with ‘Tamasha’. The sizzling chemistry between the ex-couple Deepika and Ranbir has created waves in the industry and of course certian tongues wagging and certain people being jealous. SAIndia interviewed Ranbir and Deepika with regards to each otherand the movie ‘Tamasha’ and of course their love life!

Ranbir Kapoor You have once again proved that you are one of the finest actors of the current generation? As an actor, I feel really very happy when people love my movies. Past few movies didn’t work well and of course I went low in my confidence. But after much thought I said I couldn’t do much. The only thing I can do better is my choice of films. Would you say destiny has been unkind to you or Deepika has proved luck for you? I don’t think it has to do anything with destiny. I believe a man makes his own destiny. It’s about your choices, your hard work and your karma and all of that put together. Deepika is a very fine actress. Of course she has the ability to bring out the best in me. Were you under any kind of pressure for Tamasha, as Bombay Velver failed considerably? It’s not only for ‘Tamasha’. The pressure to perform well is inside you for every film that you do. The first film that I did was a flop. Then again the pressure built up. The industry is like that. You have to give your best shot. I am really very happy that ‘Tamsha’ has created waves. There is a lot of talk about the chemistry you share with Deepika Padukone. Do you keep in mind the chemistry you share with your co-actress as one of the factors while signing a film? Chemistry is not something that me or Deepika bring to the table when you sign us on. It is also the kind of parts that we like individually as actors like in ‘Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani’ we liked each other’s characters. Then we can bring our best to the table and the character and dynamics between us makes the chemistry. In the film, ‘Gone With The Wind’, which is the greatest romantic film ever made, the lead actors never spoke to each other through the entire film as they were at loggerheads. So, your personal life or friendship with the co-star doesn’t matter. What matters is what as actors you bring to the table. You have imitated Dev Anand in the movie. Were you nervous? I was nervous because as actors to do mimicry is hard. I am not a mimic artist. So, I had to do a lot of work. I worked with a mimic artist for a week’s time. It was great to be Dev saab.

COVER FEATURE

At MAMI, your father Rishi Kapoor in his masterclass shared how people add him on Twitter hoping to get in touch with you. He describes himself on Twitter as father of a famous son. Do you think you have reached a stage where you have surpassed your father’s popularity? Not at all. Unfortunately, we are also in an industry where we have shortlived memories of actors gone by. I have not seen much of Dilip Kumar’s work. But that doesn’t mean anyone is greater than Dilip Kumar. He is the greatest. I feel the same way about my father. I think he is one of the finest actors of our film industry and whatever I do in my life, I don’t think I will be able to match up to him. He married at a young age? When do you intend to settle down? He got married when he was 28 which is not that young. Yes, I am 33 but times have also changed now. At that time it was a given that now that you are 28, if you are working you should get married. I think when you naturally get the feeling of getting married, it should happen only then. It is an organic process. I believe in the institution of marriage. But age has nothing to do with marriage. When you and Deepika were in a relationship, both of you were open about it. Post that, both of you have maintained a studious silence preferring to not make anything official about your personal lives. Was it something you decided consciously post your relationship with Deepika? Yes, it became like a bit of circus because everything that you did it was all about that and related to that. We are really ambitious people and wanted to make our own identities apart from the relationships that we have in our personal lives. I think that was important. And with time and age you understand that probably when you get closer to marriage, you get closer to a little bit of seriousness because it is such a spoken thing. Everyone talks and writes about it. It is better that way for both our partners. You are living away from your parents right now. Is that something which is going to stay for long? Each life has its own different experiences. Living with parents is the most wonderful thing ever. Even when people say that I am living on my own, it is a temporary thing. I am going to move in. I love my parents and want to spend my life with them and take care of them. But it was also important that I experience life on my own and experience independent life. My parents wanted me to become more responsible and take responsibility and other stuff. But eventually, I will move back with them. There are rumours that Katrina has not taken the promotional campaigns for Tamasha too well? There is no truth to it. We are two actors who are promoting our film together. I do it with all the other films as well. In fact people make a big scene out of it. So why was Katrina not present for the success bash of Tamasha? I have always maintained that I like to keep my personal and professional life seperate. As far as my personal life is concerned, I really would not like to reveal any more details.

Do you still love Deepika?

ship?

Yes, of course. The amount of love I have for Deepika is like family. It’s very warm, it’s about care, about being proud of her. The facet of love, care and respect has changed, but changed for the better. It’s not your immature ‘I love her’ kind of feeling. It’s mature and that’s come with age. Also, we have both positively moved on with our lives.

That’s the way he is. We are not hiding anything from anyone. My whole life has been open. When I was dating Ranbir, when I broke up with him and my current relationship.

Deepika Padukone She is the numero uno and the most sought after actress in the industry and has grown from strength to strength delivering one blockbuster after another. She’s stood shoulder-to-shoulder with her male counterparts i.e. Ranbir Kapoor, Shah Rukh Khan and Ranveer Singh in these films, carrying more than the share devoted to leading ladies and contributing immensely to their success. One more hit film in your kitty. How do you feel to be in the number one position? I truly feel blessed. God has been very kind to me. I could not have ever asked for anything more. I have way ahead to go and hope I continue to do well. Does the ‘superstar’ tag make you proud? I don’t feel proud at all. Yes, it does feel good. But it also means I must focus more on my work. What keeps you so grounded? I’ve always believed that success is temporary. So enjoy it till it lasts. It’s me today; it will be someone else tomorrow. That’s how this business works. One needs to stay balanced. If you enjoy your work, the rest happens on its own. Are you under pressure to select films more carefully now? Absolutely not! I’ve always followed my instincts. I’ve worked with all directors, established and newcomers. In fact, I’ve worked more with newcomers. I’ve never chosen a project on the basis of the set-up. I’ve always looked at whether I connect with a story. You and Ranbir have created the Shah Rukh – Kajol magic on screen? Thank you so much. This comparison means a lot to me. I and Ranbir are very good friends and that’s a very strong point that we share. Our friendship is way beyond our love. And that’s the reason we feel very comfortable working with each other. It just comes naturally to us. Your relationship with Ranveer has been much speculated upon… He’s a wonderful person. He has the ability to walk into a room and make you feel like you’re the most important person in the world. And it’s not just with people he knows. He could be meeting someone for the first time and make him feel like they’re best friends. That’s God given. That’s why he gets so much love. We’re in a similar space in terms of our age, where we’re coming from in our lives. There’s a lot of similarity between us, he doesn’t come from a film background. He’s also relatively new to the industry. We have a great time together. He makes me laugh a lot. He makes me feel special. He has been very vocal about your relation-

Page 8

www.saindiamagazine.com

Do you still love Ranbir? Of course I do. I don’t think that every feeling has to be broken down, as I don’t believe that emotions are one-dimensional anyway. Feelings and emotions are much layered. I am extremely possessive about Ranbir, He is someone I have always loved and someone I will always be extremely possessive about and very protective about. When I read about him, when I see his work - good, bad whatever it is - I have my own monologue that is going on in my head and which I do share with him. Of course, we are individual people at the end of the day and will still do what we have to do, but we have that comfort with each other where we can say that to each other. It seems Katrina was not happy about your promotional campaigns? I think at the end of the day we are all matured people and have moved on in life. That was a past phase which has phased out. I am very happy with their relation. Right now Ranbir and I are such close friends that I can tell him when to marry. Deepika, almost everything is just perfect in your life right now your career and your love life. So when are you planning to settle down? I have still a long way to go. Why do you want me to settle down so fast? You have to see a lot more of me before I can settle down and of course like everything else I will let you know this also.

“I have grown with Bajirao Mastani” says Ranveer Singh Ranveer Singh who is known for his lively electric spirit and signature energy, completely submitted himself to Sanjay Leela Bhansali, as he transformed him into the protagonist of his longstanding dream, Bajirao Mastani. Essaying the role of the Peshwa Maratha, Ranveer underwent a complete transformation both physically and mentally to get under the skin of his character, for the period drama. Apart from working on his physicality, the actor shaved his head and sported a moustache for over a year. Not your run-of-the-mill commercial look. Says Ranveer, “Although Mr Bhansali was open to the idea of me a using a prosthetic bald

plate for the filming of Bajirao Mastani, I knew that actually shaving my head would help my characterization be more authentic. During the initial stages of the filming process I had to stick a fake moustache though I really wanted to sport a real one, since I didn’t have the time to grow it before we commenced filming. But the two-month delay caused by my shoulder injury gave me just enough time to grow out my real one” Apart from his physical transformation, essaying the role was a major challenge for the actor as it required him to curtail his energy and direct that completely into his nuanced, constrained performance as one of the greatest warriors of all time. Ranveer who had an extremely challenging and emotionally turbulent year, harnessed those emotions to become the strong, brave, wise and mature Peshwa Bajirao. Explaining his emotional journey through the course of filming Bajirao Mastani says Ranveer, “Bajirao was wise beyond his year’s .In the process of playing him, I have grown up and

matured. Experiences in the recent past have organically caused this growing up. I lost my oldest friend, my grandfather and had to come out of a serious injury .For certain scenes in the film, I had to tap into certain emotional areas .In a way filming Bajirao Mastani has been a cathartic process. I had to go deep into the rabbit hole for the character and going through this emotional catharsis has made me a wiser and more evolved artist. The film came in at an important juncture in my life. It helped me learn a lot about myself as a person and as an artist. I have grown with Bajirao Mastani be it mentally, emotionally, professionally and personally”. Promising to be not just a film, but an experience, Bajirao Mastani remains one of the most anticipated movies in the history of Indian cinema. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is happy to introduce to audiences his longstanding dream starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone & Priyanka Chopra among others, transporting audiences to a land of war, passion, grandeur and love.

Tiger Shroff in overdrive mode for A Flying Jatt Tiger Shroff, who’s quite excited to play India’s first youngest superhero in Balaji Motion Pictures’ “A Flying Jatt” to be helmed by Remo D’Souza, has been leaving no stone unturned to make it appear interesting on the big screen. Doing so, Tiger has already started intense training for what he calls the role of a lifetime. The successful young actor who’s known for his fitness and dancing skills has been rigorously working on his ‘superhero metamorphoses. The superhero flick will see Tiger doing some intense action scenes for which not only is he shooting for 12 hours at a stretch for the movie, but after this he continues training for another five hours to prepare for the next set of action. A source says, “Tiger is certainly in overdrive mode since the last couple of months preparing for his role. Before taking up the challenging role, Tiger knew what he was getting into and the challenging action scenes that he has to pull off. Though he has been trained in martial arts, preparing for and shooting for “A Flying Jatt” is something he has not attempted on screen before and he’s giving his best shot.” Adds Tiger “Becoming a superhero has been a dream for me ever since I was a child. I’m blessed to have been chosen for this role so early on in my career. It’s been a challenge preparing for the character I’ve never pushed my limits this far before. From shooting some of my most difficult stunts to prepping for the next day’s set of action post pack up. I just want give the audiences something they’ve never seen before out here and put as many smiles on the children’s faces as possible. It will definitely be a thrilling experience”

Naseeruddin’s sweet gesture Naseeruddin Shah is known to be this big hearted man and he recently proved it also. The local coordinator while shooting for Manish Srivastav’s film Charlie Ke Chakkar mein vanished one day before the shoot leaving the crew stranded. The director was obviously worried but Naseeruddin offered his farmhouse very warmly. A source from the unit said, “Naseer sir’s dates were blocked and we were all panicking when the local coordinator left us in a lurch. When Sir got to know that we don’t have a place to shoot he very happily offered his farm house to shoot the film.” The film was to be shot in Manori first but later the location changed to Naseeruddin’s farmhouse in Karjat. Director Manish said, “We were in this huge fix to shoot the climax on the date Naseer Sir had allotted us and the permission for the location we had booked was revoked. Seeing us so troubled Naseer Sir offered us the locale of his farmhouse near Karjat for the shoot. It was so generous of him and it saved the production from an impending disaster.” Page 30

Jaya Prada and Sridevi end their 25 year old long rivalry!

why did deepika Padukone thank Mahesh Babu? If Bollywood was not enough, actress Deepika Padukone has now made people crazy down in the South too. On one hand, where Deepika has always maintained that she is a big fan of Mahesh Babu, the South superstar confessed that he is an even bigger fan of Deepika. While talking to a leading daily Mahesh Babu said that his all-time favourite actress was Sridevi but now it’s Deepika Padukone. He further added that Deepika is brilliant and that he was stunned by her as an actress in Piku. According to Mahesh Babu, Deepika is not only beautiful, but is a lethal combination. After Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, it’s Mahesh Babu who has been smitten by Deepika’s lovely charm.

We have witnessed the biggest of catfights of Bollywood actresses, whether it was Raveena Tandon and Shilpa Shetty or Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor Khan, the ladies have publicly criticised each other and that too on public platforms. If you think that the fights between these actresses were ugly, then let us introduce you to two actresses of 80s who have verbally abused and showed their dislike to each other publicly number of times, and they are none other than Sridevi and Jaya Prada. The only difference is that unlike Raveena Tando and Shilpa Shetty and Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor who took a few years to resolve their issues, Jaya Prada and Sridevi took almost 25 years to turn from foe to friends. Both Jaya Prada and Sridevi were the strongest competitors of each other in the 80s. The actresses used to hate each other so much that during the shooting of the filmo Maqsad, both Rajesh Khanna and Jeetendra locked the two ladies together in one makeup room. After an hour when the door was opened, the two sat in opposite corners staring in opposite directions. Apparently, the 25-year old hatred ended when Sridevi arrived at Jaya Prada’s nephew Siddharth’s wedding. People who were present at the wedding were surprised when Sridevi arrived but they got shocked seeing the friendly camaraderie ship between the two. The actresses were seen hugging each other and having a hearty conversation for a long time. Well, all we would want to say is all’s well that ends well!

Kareena reduces her rate for a commercial! The name Kareena Kapoor Khan is a brand in itself. The actress has been associated with probably the best of brands. But it seems that Kareena’s decision of taking it slow in her Bollywood career has some where majorly affected her brand value. According to a reliable source, Kareena usually charges a good amount of money for the brand she endorses. But recently the actress signed for a sanitary ware to an amount which was the least she has charged for a commercial. The source further added that Kareena has locked the deal and will shoot for the commercial soon. It’s being said that the main reason behind Kareena reducing her fees is the few movies which the actress has done lately. After marriage it was Kareena’s decision to take it easy on work front as she wanted to give more time to her married life. Hence, after Singham Returns she did only Bajrangi Bhaijaan where she played a fully-fledged role. While Kareena is doing a few films, her contemporaries like Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra are making it a point to do two movies a year, which is one more reason of Kareena reducing her fees. Denying the reports, Kareena Kapoor Khan said, “Sorry it’s not me. I have not signed anything like that and when and if I do it for a price that is non-negotiable for the last ten years and that’s the way it is.”

As we know Ranveer Singh is a sport and like a good friend he attended Ranbir and Deepika’s recently released film Tamasha’s success bash but it seems Katrina doesn’t wish to be part of the celebration. Katrina was missing from the bash which was organised by Ranbir and Deepika. Ranbir Kapoor released a hit film after a long time so the celebration of Tamasha meant a lot for him. The actor looked extremely happy while interacting with the media.

Malaika Arora Khan laughs out at Huma Qureshi Malaika Arora Khan’s unpleasant remark about Huma Qureshi’s style statement gave birth to a new cat-fight in Bollywood. Celebrities are being looked up for their style and glamour. Some fashion critics passed good words about their style sense and sometimes they had to face embarrassment. The latest to face humiliation is Huma Qureshi. She was laughed off for her fashion statement by Malaika Arora Khan. During a chat show, ‘Born Stylish’, hosted by designer Pria Kataaria Puri, Malaika Arora Khan passed a derogatory statement about Huma. When she was asked to name whom she feels the worst dressed up, she named Huma. Well, the Khan parivaar might not be too happy with Malaika’s remark because Huma has been quite intimate with Salman Khan and his family. She was even invited to Ganesh Chaturthi festival at Khan’s abode and took active participation in it. Page 36

Karisma Kapoor withdraws her consent for divorce!

Shilpa Shetty Kundra and Raj Kundra launched their new cell phone brand named after their son Viaan. During the launch, husband Raj’s questions regarding their second child in public left the actress astonished. Raj, who was the host for the event, asked a few questions to each of the guest of honours they had at the event.

Karisma Kapoor’s married life has never been stable. After her flickering relationship with husband Sanjay Kapur, the duo had officially filed for divorce last year on grounds of mutual consent. However, this divorce saga has suddenly taken an ugly turn. Apparently, Karisma has withdrawn her consent to the divorce petition as Sanjay is not able to comply with the financial commitments mentioned in the consent terms signed by the couple. Speaking to a popular tabloid, her lawyer said that the petition did not formalize on Wednesday.

After asking them a couple of funny questions he turned towards his wife. He asked, “I have a question for you and that is, when are you going to become the mother of my second child?” Well, this left everybody laughing and Shilpa speechless. Pitching in, Farah Khan quickly got back to him with all her witty tongue and asked, “Is there any application in your cell phone to help with that as well?” It seems like Raj Kundra is fully enthusiastic about becoming a daddy once again, but Shilpa is yet to take a call on that!

They have filed an application to withdraw consent from the petition. Their stand is that there is no compliance from his (Sanjay’s) side and therefore they want to withdraw. The court has asked both parties to be present on Friday. What is interesting is that even the lawyer from Sanjay’s side has also withdrawn their consent on the same grounds. And they have also alleged that there is no compliance on her side. Let’s hope that everything ends on a good note before it gets too ugly!

Stay fit with Shilpa!

S

hilpa Shetty Kundra, who has always been the poster-girl of health and fitness in the country, can at 40, give the 20-somethings a run for their money.

The former actress turned businesswoman, turns author with her first book, The Great Indian Diet which touches upon various food categories and not only tells you how to take care of your nutritional intake but also how to burn fat in the process. The experience of the uber-fit celebrity, who lives by the diet, will open your eyes to why Indian food is the best in the world. Shilpa, who has also been in talks with several restaurant chains as part of her research for her book, will now tie-up with a popular restaurant chain to introduce Shilpa Shetty Specials in their menu. The popular chain will include recipes from Shilpa’s book replacing popular ingredients with more nutritious ones. For instance: the use of coconut oil in place of vegetable oil...the use of jaggery in place of sugar. The column’s artwork will also incorporate tips from her book. This will be activated within a month of her book launch. The book describes how nutritious the locally grown and sourced ingredients are and encourages people to look for good health within our Indian borders. ‘The book busts the myth about having food that causes fats. I worked on the book with my co-author Luke, an acclaimed nutritionist. I couldn’t write a book without having theory and proof,’ she said. The ‘Bazigaar’ actress thinks people have forgotten the benefits of having Indian food. Through this book, Shilpa hopes to shed light on several misconceptions associated with food. ‘We have forgotten about our own food, we are going towards the West. We are scared to use ghee, oil. We are scared to have Indian food because we think it is fattening, (with) high sodium,’ she said. ‘The fact is Indian food is healthy… each spices or food item that we eat helps us in some or the other way. One should live a simple lifestyle, eat proper food like lentils, sprouts, yoghurt,’ she added. The book will release on World Nutrition Day. Page 42

www.saindiamagazine.com

Here’s what Shilpa had to say about the book. What are the benefits of Indian food? Factually, Indians and people from Asia are among the healthiest in the world and that stems down to our traditional Indian food that is a major part of our culture. Everyone talks about how great olive oil is but very few know that to Indians, coconut oil and Ghee proves to have more benefits than olive oil, as it suits our climate and bodies better. Even the west has caught on to coconut oil and ghee after discovering its benefits. Why are you propagating Indian food? Because I want to shed light on several myths associated with Indian food and want to debunk them. People have always thought I’ve been on a strict calorie-restricted diet, but that is far from the truth. I love food, especially my ghar ka khaana and that is the secret to me being emotionally happy and physically fit. Why has the restaurant included your recipes? I met with them earlier to understand the kind of ingredients they use in their food to understand how the food industry sells fat-laden food when, in fact, the same dishes can be made in a completely nutritious manner. In one of our discussions, they suggested having a few dishes and recipes that I’ve included in my book, cooked in the style and manner that I have prescribed and I thought it was a really great idea. Is it an endorsement for your book? Is there a compensation for using your recipes? No compensation whatsoever, my award is in seeing people healthier. How much of these ideas regarding Indian food do you incorporate at home? All of them. I practice what I preach. Not just with me but even my little son. He doesn’t know what aerated drinks or junk food taste like. I make him potato fries with haldi and chilli powder and chicken fingers that are grilled. He even drinks ginger-lemon and honey water. Being a mum one can see that her life revolves around her son, as she eagerly waits for him to come home post a long day at school. Like her routine, Kundra also insists on keeping an eye on Viaan’s diet. Her book will include tips on making your child eat right too. “What you feed your child is very important. I am against aerated drinks and packaged food. What you teach your child to eat at this age is what he/she would end up growing up with. My three-year-old son tells me, ‘Mama, you cannot eat lollipops because they give you cavities!’ Though you have to negotiate with your child, Viaan has never eaten a bag of chips. But I give him homemade fries with haldi, salt and chilli powder. He loves drinking ginger lemon honey water and fresh juices. A child doesn’t know anything; you have to tell them what is good and what isn’t. Once he reaches 12 or 13, I don’t know what will he do, but I am doing my duty now!” she laughs. Make time for fitness Kundra has dabbled with several things, from co-owning a shopping channel, cricket team to being a real-

ity show judge, all the while taking care of her son. We ask whether she owns a secret time management genie, “Everybody has forgotten how to breathe. Spend at least 10 minutes a day and concentrate on your breathing. Take another 10 minutes to eat your homepacked lunch. If your boss stops you, you need to leave that job!” she advises, while shelling pistachios for Viaan who, by now, is back from school. Getting philosophical she says, “If you fall sick you will take out time. Why reach that level? Instead, take care when you are healthy.” Magic Mantra: For new mums & weight watcherswhen I was losing weight after my pregnancy, I would eat nearly four eggs a day. Eggs keep your stomach full for longer. When you are trying to lose a lot of weight, you always stress about not getting to have food. This results in your body producing extra cortisol, slowing down metabolism. Eating has a lot more to do with your mind than your stomach. Don’t tell yourself that you are dieting. Make a change in your life to be healthy not because you want to fit into a dress or because you have a party to attend. If you follow the diet plan in the book and can’t workout, walk for at least four times a week. Some form of exercise is a must. Strike the 70% diet and 30% exercise balance. This combination helps lose weight. Shilpa’s Yoga routine Kundra does yoga for about 45 minutes to an hour, at least thrice a week. She worked out in a gym when she wanted to lose weight after the birth of her son and reccomends it for to avoid sagging skin post shedding several kilos. Here are her favourite asanas: Suryanamaskar: It’s a full body swirl out, all encompassing, toning, stretching and a warm up for the body. Dhanurasana: It helps you strengthen your back and abdominal muscles. It also opens up the chest, neck and shoulders. This asana lends flexibility to your back and helps with kidney disorders. Vrikshasana: (Tree pose) It looks easy but is one of the most difficult yoga poses. It helps in mild giddiness, weakness of legs and shoulders. Vrikshasana also improves concentration and focus.

Shilpa Shetty Kundra now turns author with “The Great Indian Diet”, a diet and nutrition book that reiterates how nutritious your locally grown and sourced ingredients are and encourages people to look for good health within our Indian borders. The book which will release on World Nutrition Day, will have the foreword written by none other than Anil Kapoor. Typically written by someone other than the primary author of the work, the foreword often tells of some interaction between the writer of the foreword and the book›s primary author or the story the book tells. Shilpa and Anil Kapoor who starred in “Badhaai Ho Badhaai”, share a great equation over the years and the newly turned author could think of no one better than the forever-young and fit superstar to write the foreword of the book. Says a source, “When Shilpa approached Anil Kapoor for this and requested him to write the foreword, he immediately agreed and was kicked with the idea. Shilpa deeply admires and respects Anil Kapoor, as he has consistently remained fit and followed a healthy lifestyle, which has set an example to everyone in the industry. Confirming the news says Shilpa, «Anil Kapoor is a true inspiration. His fitness levels are inspirational. He was the perfect example of someone who is disciplined and follows a healthy lifestyle and that is exactly the kind of star I needed to talk about the book. The Great Indian Diet» will be published by Penguin Random House, the world’s most global trade book publisher. The book has been co-authored by Luke Coutinho, an International collaborator with Yale University, Griffin, Prevention and Research centre, CT, USA. Luke who has also authored ‘ Eat Smart, Move More, Sleep Right ‘ combines nutrition, exercise, sleep and spirituality/stress management in his approach to help people with their health goals. Together, Shilpa and Luke, hope to shed light on several taboos associated with food, staying true to their Indian roots.”The Great Indian Diet” touches upon various food categories and not only tells you how to take care of your nutritional intake but also how to burn fat in the process. The combined experience of a professional nutritionist and an uber-fit celebrity who lives by the diet will open your eyes to why Indian food is the best in the world.

Bhujangasana: (Cobra pose) This pose is good for cervical problems, shoulder and lower back ailments. MarjariAsana: (Cat pose) Good for lower back; gives a good stretch to the spine. Shilpa’s food chart Breakfast • Hot water and a glass of papaya smoothie with lemon • Kundra whips up different juices every day, such as red juice (pomegranate, apple carrot, and beetroot, tomato and green apple), green juice (cucumber and spinach). “A more peaceful way to live is to decide consciously which battles are worth fighting and which are better left alone.” ~Richard Carlson Does your life involve any one or more of these

frame of mind, or general functionality. If you find that a particular issue is recurring causing a regular strain on your marriage then it is a good idea to consider the importance of that issue and to address it appropriately. This is a productive and responsive way of choosing your battles.

situations?

• •

All of your relationships involve constant drama. This is the only way you know how to be in a relationship of any kind, and you may even look for problems when there’s nothing to fight about.

2.

You are harboring resentment or anger, but instead of expressing what you really feel, you pick at the little things.

You may feel that you are right or that you have a point to make but you should recognise that your partner/spouse may feel the same way. There are always at least two sides to every issue, and a couple needs to be considerate and understanding of that. Sometimes, just accepting that your spouse/partner’s viewpoint is as valid as yours is enough to dispel the need for an argument. In other words telling each other “let’s agree to disagree and accept that we have a difference in opinion so that we can continue with our day with less disruption.”

You are dealing with stresses unrelated to the relationship, so you vent that stress where you easily can: on the people closest to you. You have an idealised vision of what love and friendship should look like, so you fight whenever something happens that does not fit within that vision.

Conflict is the end product of a misunderstanding that has caused tension in a relationship and spiraled out of control.

3.

Here are some steps to take when you are faced with a conversation that is building up from a misunderstanding into you an argument: Decide what issues are truly important. Be honest with yourself about how big a deal the issue really is for you, and pick your battles accordingly. Rate the issue on a scale of 1 (not that important) to 10 (absolutely must be dealt with). Choose your battles based on that scale. A good rule of thumb is to only fight for issues that are a 10 in importance, and let the rest go. Issues that rate a 10 should include anything that threatens your safety, self-esteem, security,

Avoid arguing for the wrong reasons. Pick your battles according to importance not because you feel the need to be right. It is not necessary or healthy to pursue a fight in order to get the last word in. Do not argue just because you feel you have been challenged. It is inevitable that your partner/spouse will disagree with you, hold an opposing opinion and/or question you at times. Choosing your battles just for the sake of defending your pride is counterproductive to having a healthy relationship with your spouse.

With tensions rising from the above scenarios playing out in their daily lives, couples walk away, deflated, exhausted from ongoing arguments, difficulties communicating with each other to eventually one or both of them deciding that they will never see eye to eye and are ready to throw in the towel and dissolve their relationship.

1.

Consider the other side.

4.

5.

Learn to recognise your personal trigger points, as well as those of your partner/ spouse. If you find that small, seemingly meaningless occurrences tend to dredge up heavy emotions and incite memories of past transgressions, then something deep-seated and rooted in the past is likely the cause of current tensions. Instead of acting on the superficial issues, choose your battles in a way that targets the underlying cause. Challenge yourself to sit with your feelings so you can learn to minimise your internal drama. When you work on releasing your anxious energy, you will be able to explore what relationships can look and feel like without it.

Some issues may seem too large to solve. When you cannot reach an agreement and you both want to keep your relationship intact, seek professional advice. Sometimes a counselor or mediator will assist you both in shedding light on your misunderstanding, ease the tension and possibly avoid a conflict allowing you both to choose your battles wisely and keeping your love alive.

Do not assume that your partner /spouse knows what you are feeling. Be specific about what upsets you and attempt to solve the problem together. View your partner/spouse as a teammate, not your enemy. When you view the situation through that lens, you change the dynamic of the argument. Listen attentively and speak respectfully. Watch what you say and how you say.

Shankars Musical

I

n the world of Indian music, the Shankars signify a musical legacy like no other. After the late Pandit Ravi Shankar brought the sitar to devoted worldwide audiences, after his demise, it is his daughter Anoushka Shankar who carries on his legacy, but on her own terms. Although less visible on the mainstream musical map than both her father and sister, Anouskha Shankar is no less talent. It’s been more than a decade since she had a solo classical release and she recorded it in her own newly built studio in East London. However, unlike some of her earlier releases, this time Shankar has looked back at her training sessions with her father and guru, late Pandit Ravi Shankar and has tried to musically connect to him with Home. When you compose a song, how does it begin? Do you generally start with Indian Ragas or western harmonies? It does vary. A lot of the time it starts with my instrument. The melody might come from my hands or my head but it starts on the sitar, although I may end up giving it to another instrument. If it started on my sitar, it will usually exist in at least a loose raga frame. From there, it can go in one of two directions, either, I start to dress it in

To really hear and feel what a raga is, opened and explored and performed in its own element as opposed to the way it sounds when you hear some bars in a Western song which may sound absolutely stunning, but it’s not the same as hearing it in its own element. TRAVEL

hile we always talk about the sweeping views of sunrise from Tiger Hill and the view of the colossal Kanchenjunga with many other snow clad eastern Himalayan peaks from here, but we hardly talk about the summit of Tiger Hill itself. True that the blaze of rapidly changing colours of the snow peaks as the sun strikes is an awesome view, but Tiger Hill is great even otherwise. It’s a destination by itself offering not just great views during sunrise, it’s a place where you can soak yourself with Himalayan serenity anytime during the day. Tiger Hill is located 11km (6.8 miles) from Darjeeling town and above Ghoom. It’s the highest point in Darjeeling hills at an altitude of 8482 feet (or 2590 meters). The best season to see the dazzling snow covered peaks as the sun rises is between Mid-October to December. March to April is also a good time. For sunrise, you will need to start by 3:30am in the morning so that you reach by 4.15am. Some taxi drivers will insist that you start even earlier. There is a reason why. As you reach close to the summit, particularly during the

high season there would be a huge queue of cars lined up. Hundreds of tourists come here every day for the sunrise view during this time. As a result, you may have to walk uphill quite a bit as your vehicle may be parked much below the top. And if the tower-house and the terrace next to it from where people watch the sunrise get full by the time you reach, then you will probably need to watch the sunrise standing on a meadow little below the summit.

snow-capped peaks. So, be prepared to experience the magical play of the sunrise the way the nature offers you.

Now having set your expectations, let me start the journey and take you to Tiger Hill through my own eyes. From Darjeeling Town as you take the Hill Cart Road towards Ghoom, there is a narrow road that goes up on the right few minutes before you reach the Ghoom station. This is the steep Senchal Road that leads to the Remember, Darjeeling’s weather can change top of the Tiger Hill. anytime. The fog and the mist play a mystical game here all the time. Local Train (Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, erstwhile DGHC). However as you drive along, you would probably not see much signs of maintenance. In several occasions I found the roads weren’t repaired for years. With battering of torrential rains and harsh weather every year, you can imagine what may be the road conditions here having had no repairs over so many years. But the views all around and the thrill compensates for all that. After a few minutes if you look to your left, you will see a lovely meadow. This is from where many tourists view the sunrise if it gets too crowded on the top. In fact cars get lined up from here up to the summit during the high season. There used to be a tourist lodge here. You can still see a chimney like structure on the left that belonged to the abandoned tourist lodge. It was built during the British days as a VIP guest house when many eminent personalities came and watched the sunrise from here. It was later converted into a tourist lodge and was called the Dak Bunglow. In 1988 during a commotion in the hill area, the lodge was burnt and destroyed. It’s lying abandoned since then.

As you move along, there is a spot on the right side of the road from where you can get a view of the Senchal Lake down below which is part of a sanctuary. It’s better to view it on your return as then it would be on your left. You can easily combine a visit to the lake or even a day’s picnic there following a visit to Tiger Hill. As you drive up, you will see a temple on the left and another one on the right. The one on the left is that of Durga devi (known as Sincheal Singh Devi Dham) and the one on the right is of Lord Shanker. On your return, you can spend some time here in the tranquil temple environment and ring the hanging bells before you start your descent back to the hill town.

On a clear day if the mist doesn’t play foul, you can even see the world’s highest peak Mount Everest 29,029 ft (8,848 meters) which lies about 225km away and also Mount Makalu 27,769 ft (8,464 meters). About 135km away is the Tibet’s Chomol Hari Mountain which is said to be world’s most beautiful peak. And then the sun rises above the horizon a little away from the peaks. What more! During sunrise as you watch these wonders and nature’s play in the horizon, the local vendors serve you hot tea in plastic cups.

On your way back, drop in at the Batasia Loop. Right outside, there are stalls set up early in the morning by the locals selling hot samosas (a kind of stuffed and fried dumplings) specifically for tourists returning from Tiger Hill. You would be hungry by now and samosas or singaras are just a great way to continue the treat of the day. Many tourists specifically those from Kolkata who know about this, keep it as Just before the sun comes up, the peaks begin a ‘must have’ in their agenda for the day. to emerge. It’s hard to take your eyes off the dazzling snow peaks of Kanchenjunga, which Within minutes you will reach the view tower. And then the Tiger Hill is all yours. You are on top of Darjeeling. From here you will get almost 360 degree view of Darjeeling area including that of the entire Eastern Himalayan range. If you look towards north, you will see the landscape of Darjeeling Town. And in the background is the stupendous snowy range.

COCHIN’S DIVERSE CULTURAL LEGACY Cochin, also known as Kochi, the lush green collection of islands on the Kerala coast, has a rich multi-cultural legacy from the early Dutch colonial settlements in the 16th century, much of which has been retained as a major tourist attraction. In this first of a series of picture essays, FAKIR HASSEN captures some of that legacy.

Indian traditional styles of building remain in the many temples in the area, such as this very old one in Cochin, next to a museum showing the history of the rulers of Cochin, including the later ones who became puppets at the hands of the Dutch as they exploited the spice trade for which the area was famous.

The rich Indian cultural art forms unique to Kerala and going back more than 5 000 years is reflected at this museum through continuing them in practical ways.

Iconic gods and goddesses regarded to be patrons of the arts, rest in front of ancient artefacts dug up at historic sites and salvaged from the sea. Weather-beaten statues recovered from marooned ships at the bottom of the sea surrounding Cochin attract a lot of tourist attraction.

The unique Dutch architectural styles also still seen in South Africa today have been retained in many homes, resorts and churches in Cochin. Page 54
