riyanka Chopra’s performance in debut American TV series ‘Quantico’ has been getting applauds from her Bollywood colleagues, who called her a “buzz” in an international circuit. The first episode of the series went on air in India on October 3rd, and from veteran actress Shabana Azmi to internationally acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur took to Twitter to congratulate the 33-year-old actress for her promising international acting debut. You’re one of the biggest stars in the world but American audiences without access to Bollywood are going to see you as a newcomer. Has that been an adjustment for you? Not for me ... This is an interesting experience for me to figure out if the mainstream American audience is open to discovering me. I was a little skeptical, I’ll be honest, because it’s such a long commitment and it’s television. But they came to me with such an incredible script that it became a no-brainer. What were the other roles that Hollywood had offered you before? There were a bunch of movies, but I’m always playing the Arabian princess and stuff like that, so I wasn’t interested.Indians, so far, with an exception of very few actors, have always been put into a box. This is all that we can do and all that we can play. I want to be able to play, I guess, any role, which has nothing to do with anything else except for the fact that I’m an actor. Alex [my character on the show], to me, is anyone who looks like anything. So any nationality can be Alex Parrish, which is important to me because I love her. She’s badass, but at the Page 16

same time, she’s smart, intelligent and feminine. I think that’s, in a way, breaking the kind of stereotype that I expected and I was getting from [American movies]. Do you feel that way now? I’m sure you know you’re the first Bollywood actress to lead an American TV show. Has the magnitude of that fact hit you? I don’t know if I see the magnitude of it as much as other people. I hear a lot of people telling me that it’s the first time it’s happened for an Indian person. Tell me about how you got involved with Quantico? I had a holding deal with ABC, to find me a show, and I was very clear about the kind of show I wanted to do, because Indian people have always been seen as, well, we’ve been put in a box, about who we should be like. There’s nothing wrong with [who we are] — both my parents were doctors, and I wanted to be an engineer, but that’s how we’re seen. So I wanted to sort of break that box, and I was very sure that whatever part I do, what I said to ABC when they came to me in India to talk to me about the deal, was that if that’s something you’re willing to see me as, as an actor and not the colour of my skin or the way I speak or the accent with which I speak, if that can happen, I’m fine doing the deal. ABC was sure they would find the right fit for me, and I think Quantico is. It’s me as an actor. [Alex] wasn’t written for someone with my ethnicity, but I am Indian in the show, so I’ve been rooted with my culture in the show, but that’s not what the show is about.

What’s your travel beauty regimen? Loads of water. I moisturize my face, body, and hands because the plane can be so drying to your skin. I usually go right from the airport to an event, so I try to prep on the plane as much as possible. I also use a moisturizing face mask about 20 minutes before landing, it really helps to refresh and brighten my skin. Do you have any other beauty/hair rules? Yogurt for my skin and also for my hair. For my hair, I mix half a cup of yogurt (for moisture) with 2 teaspoons of lemon juice (great for exfoliating), apply it to your scalp and leave it on for about half an hour. Shampoo as usual and voilà! When is it that you feel most beautiful? When my confidence is at an all-time high! I seriously believe that there is a direct correlation between inner and outer beauty. If you believe in yourself and believe you are beautiful then that confidence shines through and kind of like add an extra layer to your outer beauty. When both connect, it’s like “No one can stop me!” What star would you totally fan-girl over if you met? I’ve never been star struck really, but I always get a little bit starstruck around Amitabh Bachchan. I get a little weak-kneed around him. And maybe Madonna, I think she’s someone who has always innovated herself, been ahead of times. Dude, how can you look like that at that age? It’s insane.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is the classic story of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped in a spell placed by an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity.

Rajasthan Royalty launch Deewani Mastani from Bajirao Mastani! Eros International and Bhansali Productions are all set to present to audiences his greatest work yet with the period drama, Bajirao Mastani starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra. Given that Bajirao Mastani is the kind of film that comes once every 50 years, it continues to remain one of the most anticipated films in the history of Indian cinema. Hence it comes as no surprise that the first song from the film, Deewani Mastani, was launched in a larger than life manner with Deepika Padukone travelling to 2 prime cities to promote the song. While Deepika launched the song in Delhi, she flew to Jaipur to promote the song in the Pink City. The actress, who essays the role of a warrior princess in Bajirao Mastani, met the real-life Princess, Diya Kumari. Deepika Padukone also had the honour of flagging off the Royal polo match at the Rajasthan polo Club, a tradition followed by the royal family for years.

The actress then visited City Palace, where Princess Diya Kumari and her guests watched the song for the first time on the Palace walls, adjacent to the Palace lawns. Normally old Rajasthani folk stories are screened and projected on the walls of city Palace, and this was the first time Bollywood content was showcased on this platform to over a 100 esteemed guests and royalty. Deepika Padukone then joined Princess Diya Kumari for a private meal in her personal dining room. The royal family have been extremely supportive of the film and were happy to open their doors for the launch of the first song from the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. Katrina worried about Ranbir-Deepika’s physical intimacy While the whole world is talking about Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone’s sizzling chemistry in ‘Tamasha’, one person who is not so impressed with their off-screen chemistry is actress Katrina Kaif, Ranbir’s present love. Going by the ‘Tamasha’ trailer, one can make out that Ranbir and Deepika shot few intimate scenes and share passionate lip-locking but it is buzzed that Kat feels disturbed with their intimacy. Perhaps, Katrina is much worried about Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Tamasha’ taking over ‘Jagga Jasoos’. She feared that audiences might not like Ranbir-Deepika’s chemistry over Ranbir and her in Anurag Basu’s ‘Jagga Jasoos’. A Source say; “Katrina has been keeping track of Tamasha ever since the first promo came out. Enough has been said and written about whom Ranbir Kapoor makes the best pair with — Deepika or Katrina? Why is this important? It’s simple. He is the hottest actor after the Khan triumvate, and whoever makes the hottest pair with him, will get the chance to act in more films with him. Kat is worried that the DP-RK chemistry will overshadow her pairing with him. Her team has instructed Anurag to up the sizzle-ante between his lead pair. A major chunk of JJ will be shot in January and that’s where the magic between Katrina and Ranbir will be captured. Ranbir and Deepika are no longer a couple; they have parted ways long back and both moved on in life but remain connected professionally. After the break-up, they teamed up for ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ and again Imtiaz Ali brings them together for ‘Tamasha’. Talking about Ranbir-Deepika, the ‘Phantom’ actress said, “You cannot stop anyone from doing anything by laying your stake or claim on them. That’s not going to stop anyone. If a person has to stray or wander, the whole world can see you together but the guy can still find a way to do it”. On being asked who makes a better pair with Ranbir between her and Deepika, Katrina said, “Deepika is a great actress, will make a great pair with anyone, any male actor she’s paired with. I think I make a great pair with Ranbir and Ranveer (Singh) also!” As per a DNA report, the Dhoom 2 actress “has been keeping track of Tamasha ever since the first promo came out”.

Bipasha Basu opens up about her boyfriend Karan Singh Grover Bipasha Basu, who is rumoured to be dating her ‘Alone’ co-star Karan Singh Grover wishes him all the best for his next outing, ‘Hate Story 3’. Bips wants the film to be a huge success. “I wish them all the best (for the film). Everyone has a journey that one has to take and I wish all the people who are working so hard as actors, all the very best. And especially it’s Karan. I definitely want a huge success in it (movie),” Bipasha said. Time and again the couple posted numerous pictures of their holiday but they are not ready to make their relationship public at the moment. Bipasha and Karan often hit the headlines for their open secret relationship but the couple has been maintaining a dignified silence. When Bipasha was asked about her good friend, she said: “Good friend? I have many good friends. My good friend Ranbir Kapoor is also coming up with Tamasha. He is much closer and I have known him for many, many years.” When probed about Karan Singh Grover, she stated, “Karan is a good guy, he’s a part of my close friend circle now. I enjoy being with him. But I’ll speak about the man in my life when I want to.” When asked if marriage was on the cards.”

She at the same time denies going for an arranged marriage. “That’s not happening for now. I can never go for an arranged marriage; that would never work for me, so my parents have given up. Right now it’s not important because I can see that many of the marriages around me are not happy. But there are also the blessed ones like my parents. When I see them together, I want marriage too. But jab hoga, tab hoga.”

Tweets, Balloons & More: 20 Years of DDLJ There are certain romantic movies that have the same appeal years down the line. Every time you watch it, you feel like you want to squish it and “awe” at how adorable it is. DDLJ redefined Bollywood romances and has been endlessly referenced in popular culture by successive generations of cine-goers ever since it was released. DDLJ, the longest running film in Indian cinema completed 20 years of uninterrupted run on 20th October, 2015. To make this celebratory in the digital space, YRF had teamed up with Twitter to customize @DDLJ handle by putting animated floating balloons on the handle to mark DDLJ’s 20th anniversary. A visually extraordinary treat for all the fans and a first of its kind as far as movie integrations go. Quote from Twitter India Team: “Today is a special day for Twitter India, as the excitement around the all-time Bollywood favourite, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (@DDLJ) completing 20 years is unravelling on the platform. Twitter is providing the perfect showcase to this special moment with Tweets from Shah Rukh Khan (@iamsrk), a Tweet Storm on ‘DDLJ in 20 Tweets’, and Tweets from fans from all over the world reminiscing about their favourite dialogues, scenes and movie moments that are fuelling interesting conversations.” A special literary feat also lit up the Twitterverse. As an ode to the 20 years celebration, the epic sage of love was re-told in 20 Tweets. Twitter was abuzz with this activity and conversations through the day. Quote from Anand Gurnani, VP – Digital, Yash Raj Films: “Times have clearly changed. We’re catering to the 21st century attention span and Twitter-fiction is something we wanted to gratify our fans with on this special occasion.” A film like DDLJ warms hearts even today. Fans have kept the film running in Maratha Mandir for 20 years, making it the longest running film of Indian cinema. It’s a gentle reminder that DDLJ has made you feel all the feels since 1995. Happy 20th anniversary, DDLJ and here’s to the next 20 years.

I could never be friends with Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi

Upen Patel does an item song! Actor and fashion icon Upen Patel, who has been appreciated for his dancing skills at this year’s season of the dance reality show, Nach Baliye, will soon be seen doing a dance number in a popular TV soap. The talented actor, who enjoys a huge fan following had already finished shooting for an item song and is ecstatic with the way it has turned out.

“Smita and I could never be friends. The rivalry between us, some of it manufactured by the media and some of it real, caused tension. I have said it before and I do so today, that I have been guilty about making uncharitable remarks about her. I regret it. There were efforts of reconciliation and we were able to maintain civility, but we were never able to turn into friendship. But at no point it had spilled over to our families,” said Ms Azmi. At the event, Ms Patil’s son Prateik introduced Ms Azmi as masi (aunt). “Human relationships are complex and I am grateful for the trust they (Smita Patil’s family) have placed in me. I remember once they called me to take care of Prateik with regards to his career,” added Ms Azmi. “We had several similarities. Same aesthetics, working in films. I think today in public memory she could be ‘Smita Azmi’ and I as ‘Shabana Patil.’ She had a short career span but today parallel cinema will not be mentioned without the name of Smita Patil,” said Ms Azmi.

Upen says, “This was my first item number for TV, and it was great fun. I did those typical Bollywood dance steps. I play myself on the show. Dance numbers add drama to a story, and they’re great entertainment.”

She began her career as a news presenter, Smita in her brief career, delivered some memorable film like Bhookika, Aakrosh, Manthan. She died in the early age of 31 in 1986.

The actor who has just finished shooting for a Telugu film says, “Besides the Telugu movie, there are two other movies on the floors. Film actors are very lucky, as performing for TV is tough. Television actors shoot for 17 hours a day, seven days a week. I am very busy with my films. It’s impossible to give time to TV, except for reality TV shows, which don’t demand long hours.” Page 36

During the book launch event of Maithili Rao’s book Smita Patil: A Brief Incandescence in Mumbai on October 17, veteran actress Shabana Azmi reveals about her rivalry with Smita Patil, her contemporary. At the launch, Shabana Azmi said that she regrets making uncharitable remarks about actress Smita Patil.

“I was struck by her raw beauty and stillness. She was born for the camera. We worked together in Shyam Benegal’s Nishant, and it was a difficult role for someone as young as her. As a co-actor I felt both challenged and inspired by her,” she said “Smita Patil was microcosm of India. She was modern, strong, fragile and confident and vulnerable. These contradictions were her strength and weakness. Her name will always be counted when we mention names of finest actors of Indian cinema,” added Ms Azmi.

Dino Morea urges Aditya Thackeray to bring his open air gym under CCTV surveillance Actor-entrepreneur Dino Morea who launched 12 open air fitness stations – ‘Dino Morea Fitness’ across several places in Mumbai was shocked to learn that one of the fitness stations located in Marine Drive (Mumbai) was vandalised recently. Apparently, the open air fitness station launched by Yuva Sena Chief Aditya Thackeray almost two months ago was sabotaged by some unidentified people following permission issues and was later installed when civic officials realised that it was Aditya Thackeray’s pet project. Dino made his displeasure felt to Aditya urging him to step up security around it through social media and also requested him to help install CCTV cameras around the fitness station to prevent such an unfortunate incident. The actor posted on his Twitter handle, “In Shock, some idiot actually cut the fitness station we put on Marine Drive @AUThackeray. Sad the public luv it and whatever problem you have, idiot, don’t ruin something that’s good. Stop this crap, whoever you are. We are really trying to do good for Mumbai (sic).” “Someone actually used a hacksaw to cut one of the steel bars. How ridiculous can people get? I wish there were some kind of security cameras to catch the vandals. I hope citizens voluntarily start taking care of the city and stop people from creating nuisance,” Dino adds.

Deepika Padukone ignores Kangana Ranaut Deepika Padukone has had a number of fall-outs and patch-ups ever since the cold war started between them last year. While Kangana has been very vocal about her sour equation with Deepika, the ‘Om Shanti Om’ actress maintains a golden silence on the issue.

Konkana and I are friends, co-parenting our child: Ranvir Shorey Ranvir Shorey and Konkona Sen Sharma’s divorce came as a big shock for the film industry. But the couple maintained to be good friends and both are co-parenting their four-year-old son Haroon. Few months back, the estranged couple took to Twitter to announce their divorce. Ranvir says he and Konkona are still friends and open to work together. “Things are completely amicable between us. It is a mature decision which we have taken. We are still friends. We have a child and we are coparenting him together. There is nothing else to it. There is no masala in it,” Ranvir told PTI. Married in 2010, the couple starred together in movies like ‘Traffic Signal’, ‘Mixed Doubles’, ‘Aaja Nachle’ and ‘Gour Hari Dastaan - The Freedom File’. Ranvir has no inhibitions about acting with his ex-wife Konkana. He is quite open to working with her. “When we were married we were not signing films left, right and centre. We both used to look at our parts, whether it’s a good story, and will it make to theatres, Sharing the screen space will continue and that has no bearing on whether we are together or not. We have to see if the film is worth it or not. If we have something interesting, then we will work together,” Shorey further added.

Their cat-fights started in 2014 after an award ceremony when Deepika dedicated her award to Kangana for her praise-worthy performance in ‘Queen’. Kangana criticised Deepika saying that was being fake and not really meaning her actions. “I heard about that (Deepika dedication of the award to Kangana), but I hope someday, she would tell me in person what she feels about my work. I would appreciate that a lot more,” she said during a media interaction. The misunderstandings were cleared after Deepika personally called up Kangana to resolve the issue and patched up. Kangana had said in an interview, “Deepika called me, and clarified that she had no personal equation with me to make a direct call (for her performance in Queen). Also, I explained to her how it would have been unjust for me to publicly acknowledge an award from her when I have decided not to attend any awards functions. It was an emotional and heartfelt conversation. I appreciate that she called me; she is truly courteous and very emotional, and I just love that.” Deepika also invited Kangana for the premiere of her film ‘Piku’ and Kangana readily accepted the invitation and was present at the event. However, when Kangana’s film ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ held a screening Deepika did not attend saying that she was busy shooting for ‘Bajirao Mastani’. This did not go down well with Kangana which spoiled their amicable relation again. More gossip about their fall-outs started pouring in when it was rumoured that Deepika would be replacing Kangana in Vishal Bhradwaj’s ‘Rangoon’ after the latter reportedly demanded credit as codirector and remuneration hikes. The rumours were put to rest, but things didn’t end there, During a promotional event of her last film ‘KattinBatti’, the actress had openly said that she was ‘katti’ with Deepika. When asked if there were any chances of a ‘batti’, Kangana replied, “I just want to be left alone, that’s what I want.” Recently, a celebrated journalist asked Deepika about her relationship equation with her vociferous contemporary Kangana. But the actress didn’t speak a word, but simply smiled and shrugged. Deepika who has two releases coming up – Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Tamasha’ opposite Ranbir Kapoor and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Bajirao Mastani’, chose to remain mum as even a single word could cause negative publicity. www.saindiamagazine.com

Mira not doing any films, Shahid Kapoor dismisses rumours

Kangana Ranaut blames Salman Khan for ‘Katti Batti’ failure

Shahid Kapoor is in a happy space. He has found a perfect life partner in Mira and enjoying the specious days of his life with wife Mira. Mira Rajput, who is not connected to Bollywood is rumoured to make her acting debut which her actor hubby totally dismissed. Dismissing the rumour, Shahid Kapoor said, “No. She is chilling with her family right now”.

Kangana Ranaut and Salman Khan are involved in a cold war. One might have heard the story that Salman recommended Kangana’s name for ‘Katti Batti’ as he thought she would be the right person to play Payal and now that the film doomed at the box-office, Kangana blamed Salman Khan for the debacle.

At the same time Shahid asks media and fans to respect his privacy. He said that it is the tendency of normal people to know more about them but there are times when answering personal question becomes difficult.

Nikhil Advani narrated the script of ‘Katti Batti’ when he was doing Salman Khan’s production venture, ‘Hero’, after hearing the script, Salman felt that Kangana would be the right person to play the role. Accordingly, Kangana was approached and she signed the film after hearing the script and now one hears that she is visibly upset with the film’s fate.

“I think it is important to find that healthy balance because the tendency for people is to wanting to know more than they need to or they should or that I am comfortable with. My job is to always draw the line because if I don’t then no one will. Having said that, there are certain things that I feel I should talk about and whenever I feel like I should, I promise I will and whenever I am not please respect it,” he said. Page 38

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s comeback film ‘Jazbaa’ released and the film started off with a slow rate but with rave reviews. Whatever will be the outcome of the film, ‘Jazbaa’ will always be special for Ash, as with it she has learnt to strike a fine balance between work and motherhood. She has taken a sabbatical break from work post Aaradhya’s birth but returned with a bang. Ash’s performance in ‘Jazbaa’ was highly appreciated. Ash said that she took a break from cinema because Aaradhya was her top priority after she was born. Aishwarya confesses; “I was very clear about my priorities, it was my daughter above anything else for me after she was born. Now that she is going to school and has friends, I could think of doing a film again. And I did. But it wasn’t easy. And Aaradhya was with me throughout.” She also received accolades from every corner but she is awaiting a reaction from her family who are yet to watch the film,“Abhishek has not seen Jazbaa as yet. Neither has the rest of the family. But they will soon. Their opinion means the world to me,” says Ash. “Chalo, for me at least there is the freedom of flexibility. Whether I work or not is my choice. The hours that I decided to shoot were worked around my daughter’s time-table. But what about those thousands of women who must work with no room for concessions as a mother? How difficult it must be for them to wrench themselves away from their children!”

My daughter Aaradhya is above anything else for me, Aishwarya

Aishwarya looked as beautiful as she looked four years ago in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Guzaarish’. She laughs off, “Believe me; I’ve done nothing to look the way I do. I don’t go to the gym. I don’t do any of the things one is supposed to do.” Aishwarya showers praise on her co-stars and director. “When Gups (Sanjay Gupta) narrated the script to me I immediately thought of Irrfan and Shabana Azmiji for the two other main characters. When I told Gups this he said he too was thinking about them for the roles. So we were on the same page from the start.” On the sets, Aishwarya found the atmosphere easygoing and fun. “Gups was open to suggestions, ready for discussions. He was never rigid or the “know-all” on the sets. If I get more directors like him to work with I’ll certainly do more films.”

With no prints, the soft and breezy collection was absolutely romantic. The grey high collared gown with long pouf sleeves and frill texturing or the mid waisted one shoulder flowing gown with ruffles and pearls or high collar midi dress with frill and pearl texturing transported the audience to the 1950s era. “It was a fun show. The collection was very romantic. We worked with a lot of sheer and we have never done a complete collection on organza,” Gauri told reporters after the show.

ew Zealand (or Aotearoa – land of the long white cloud), truly is one of the most picturesque and photogenic places on earth. The country is made up of some of the world’s most spectacular landscapes, from vast mountain ranges, steaming volcanoes to sweeping coastlines. It is a natural playground for thrill seekers and adventurers and those who simply want to visit for the culture and landscapes. Tourism New Zealand is geared up to introduce exciting activities in the Indian market as they announce one of the most sought after Bollywood actors, Sidharth Malhotra, as the brand ambassador for India. Sidharth will be Tourism New Zealand’s first Indian ambassador from India. The lead actor of Student of the Year, Hasee Toh Phasee, Ek Villain and Brothers is a self-made star who stands out from the crowd and has a massive following, particularly among young people. He has over 4.3 million followers on social, which is the highest following for a male star in his peer group. Page 62

As a lover of nature, great outdoors and extreme sports, Sidharth is looking forward to visiting New Zealand soon and will first-hand be exploring its breathtaking beauty, diverse landscapes, warm and hospitable people and an array of activities. Sidharth will also experience New Zealand culture meeting local Maori during his action packed visit to both the North and South Islands.

Sidharth feels the grip of gravity!

One common factor that binds India and New Zealand is a game of cricket! And this is precisely what happened when Sidharth met legendary cricketer Stephen Fleming during his trip to New Zealand. Sidharth wanted to learn a few strokes and Stephen was glad to teach him the same; only in a different way; i.e., on top of a glacier! He took Sidharth on a helicopter along with his fellow cricketers Simon Doull and Scott Styris. During their quick flight, Sidharth found himself entirely engrossed in the breath-taking scenic beauty that the region offers.

Sidharth Malhotra successfully completes sandboarding

Sidharth is known to be an actor who doesn’t have any fears and is an extreme adventure buff. Every time he gets a chance to indulge himself into any such quest, he jumps straight into it with great energy and enthusiasm. This time Sidharth decided to jump off an airplane for the first time in his life in Queenstown from 15,000ft above sea level! Not just that, Sidharth was brave enough to choose this highest scale. He had a free fall for 60 seconds at a speed of 200km/ hour. Sidharth had an outright fun time as he maneuvered himself into rolls and tumbles such as barrel in the air and enjoyed the view from top.

The boys enjoyed the game at Isobel Glacier in Mount Aspiring National Park, Queenstown at the height of 7600lft in the midst of magnificent mountain peaks and crystal clear lake. He said, “New Zealand keeps surprising me. Just when you think you have seen it all, I land up on a glacier in a helicopter and play cricket with the legends.”

The Bollywood stunner had a thrilling adrenaline rush during the activity. “Skydiving is an activity that I will absolutely recommend to all my friends and fans. It has been on my bucket list for a while now. What an amazing rush! Flying through the sky like that was everything I thought it would be and more. The feeling of free falling in Queenstown is surreal but I felt completely at ease knowing that my jumpmaster was in control.”

Sidharth Malhotra’s first sky dive in Queenstown About the activity: NZONE has been offering tandem skydiving in Queenstown since 1990. NZONE Skydive was New Zealand’s first Tandem Skydive operation and is the only one to have won New Zealand’s Supreme Tourism Award. Having jumped over 250,000 customers’ to-date, NZONE is New Zealand’s most experienced Tandem Skydive company. The flight goes high above the Wakatipu basin, where jumpers will have a birds eye view of the dramatic mountains and lakes.

Bhajan Samrat - Anup Jalota

nup Jalota’s musical career began with a playback in actor Manoj Kumar’s Shirdi Ke Saibaba (1974). And recently he was thrilled to get an opportunity to sing for Shirdi Saibaba in the United States. The main Baba temple in Shirdi has hosted many of his shows, and the ghazal singer is visibly enthralled by the exact replica of Shirdi Sai in Chicago. In a chat, he shares with us his anxiety about the future of ghazal singing and why he would never change his signature style of singing. Q. Tell us about your first stage show. It was at a very small age, when I was in school. I sang a devotional song. My class teacher liked my voice and asked my parents to make me practice singing. Q. How has been your journey in the industry? Good. I have been here for 35 years and am still going on. As you know, I don’t sing for films but only for my private albums so there is nothing messy. But yes, it’s quite good to be a part of Bollywood over a long time. Q. Is there a particular reason behind not singing Bollywood songs? There is no particular reason. I am a ghazal singer and I have always sung devotional songs. There are no such songs in Bollywood. Q. Today all reality show winners are go-

Page 64

ing for playback singing. No one chooses ghazal. Comment. That’s because ghazal singing is tougher than playback singing. To perform in a reality show is difficult but to sing a ghazal is much more difficult. In this industry, I think only Pankaj Udhas, Jagjit Singhji and I sing ghazals; the future looks bleak. Q. Many singers and music directors change with the need of the hour. So can we expect to see you singing devotional songs in rap or remixes in the future? (Laughs) Not at all. Other may try it, but I am happy as I am. I still get thousands of people in the audience during shows and concerts. If I change my style, those people who love me and my songs may get angry. And even youngsters love ghazal singing, so why should I upset my fans? Singing is my passion as well as a hobby. Why should I go for a makeover in my singing style? So when you look back, what are you most proud of and what more is left to achieve? I was always laid back and content. If I sang one song well I would be thrilled that this is my piece of cake for today! I have recorded 200 albums and never imagined I would achieve the success I did. At that time I was only thinking that this is difficult music, but I enjoy singing it and I will survive. There is a lot left to create. I have sung the Ramayana and Bhagwad Gita and today I want to record the Vedas, which have no music so you have to chant without melody. I have

met with many Vedic scholars and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi as well, all of them have discouraged me. Doing Ramayana and Gita took a lot of research and each took three years to create. But I will be presenting the Vedas. I create a lot of my music when I am flying, because I travel a lot. I produced a movie Hum Diwane Pyar Ke, sang and composed music for it and I am producing another film. You live only once and I feel one should fulfill all of one’s desires. I also have my own music company where I want to nurture and give a break to singers who are committed to preserving good music.
