he United States Government through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced support to a public-private partnership in India for “Girl Rising,” a global campaign to promote girls’ education. USAID previously announced $3 million to support the program worldwide. The Girl Rising: ENGAGE INDIA (Empowering New Generations to Advance Girls’ Education) program will work to raise awareness and change attitudes and behaviours relating to girls’ education through local language releases of the powerful feature film “Girl Rising.” This partnership will reach millions worldwide and include teaching materials that highlight the stories of nine girls born into difficult circumstances in nine different countries around the world. “The Girl Rising campaign in India beganwith the film, but the story is much longer and only just beginning. Commenting on the initiative, the Girl Rising Ambassador and leading Indian actress Priyanka Chopra said: “If more girls are educated, all of India stands to gain. We all stand to gain.” “Too often, it is social and traditional ideas that are holding girls back. People just can’t imagine a different future for girls. Girl Rising changes that,” added Freida Pinto, the renowned Indian-origin Hollywood actress and Girl Rising Ambassador. ou were arrested by her charm as Nisha in the 2012 film Thuppakki, and you couldn’t take your eyes off her in 2013’s critically acclaimed blockbuster Special 26, but you’ve never seen her like this before. That’s because Kajal Aggarwal, one of Google’s 10 most-searched-for Bollywood celebrities, has teamed up with her friends at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India for a brand-new ad that makes the hideous abuse of animals used in circuses abundantly clear. In the ad, Aggarwal peers into the camera with an ankus (a weapon resembling a fireplace poker with a sharp metal hook on one end) in the foreground and a fresh “cut” on her face next to the caption “Try to Relate to Elephants’ Fate – Ban Animal Circuses”. The stunning ad was shot by ace photographer Gaurav Sawn. Aggarwal’s hair styling was done by Amit

“As an actor, I perform out of choice. But animals are not given a choice in circuses”, Aggarwal says. “They are made to perform by all sorts of brutal ways, like by caging them, by caning them. They are not given proper veterinary care. They’re not given food. They are tortured with all sorts of instruments and made to perform.”

The findings of PETA India’s investigation of circuses in India included rampant use of torture devices; animals who had died from inadequate care or who had simply “gone missing”; drunken circus staff who were handling animals; nearly constant chaining and caging and other severe confinement of elephants, dogs, cats, birds and other animals; animals who showed signs of severe psychological distress, including constant swaying, circling and even

self-mutilation, and the use of elephants and other animals who were nearly blind or had severe eye problems. As a result, the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has now de-recognised six circuses as captiveanimal facilities and urged the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) to cancel one’s permission to perform. In addition, in a letter addressed to the AWBI, the Animal Welfare Division of the Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change also stated that “(i) AWBI should take necessary steps to deregister the animals used in the circuses in a phased manner wherever cruelty is involved. (ii) AWBI should also make arrangement for rehabilitation of the deregistered animals. (iii) AWBI should not register any new animal hereafter”. The CZA’s action means that the affected circuses can no longer train, exhibit or use any wild animals protected under the Indian Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, includ-

ing elephants. The CZA notice also means that state forest departments must cancel the ownership certificates for the elephants that they had issued to these circuses, confiscate the elephants and move them immediately to a sanctuary. PETA India is now calling on the ministry to ban the use of animals in circuses outright, as Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus and Greece have already done. Aggarwal mostly appears in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil films. Through her film career, she has become one of the most popular celebrities in South India. Among her awards are the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut, the Vijay Award for Best Actress, the Stardust Award for Superstar of Tomorrow and the Cosmopolitan People’s Choice Award, also for Best Actress.

Resounding Success As 11th DIFF Closes Its Curtains Region’s Leading Film Festival once Again Attracted Top Talent from the UAE, Region and the Rest of the World

gained artistic merit, cinematic credibility and continued to win worldwide acclaim; and I’m proud to have been part of this journey.”

Dubai, December 17, 2014 – The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) has wrapped on the 11th edition after an action-packed, spectacular 8-day event. From the international celebrities who walked the red carpet and the world’s best directors and producers, to the incredible filmmakers from the UAE and across the region: the 11th DIFF attracted the industry’s brightest and best.

DIFF was established in 2004 mandated to propel the burgeoning film industry in the UAE and wider region, bringing together international film experts and giving homegrown filmmakers the chance to gain exposure for their work. The Dubai Film Market (DFM) launched in 2007, to support local and regional Arab filmmakers; providing all-important funding for their work, networking opportunities, distribution and support.

The 11th DIFF drew to a close with a Red Carpet Gala Screening of Rob Marshall’s humorous musical ‘Into the Woods’, starring Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Anna Kendrick and Chris Pine. The film blends classic stories from Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel into a tale that delighted and enthralled the VIP audience. Abduhamid Juma, Chairman, DIFF, said: “DIFF has put Dubai, the UAE and the region on the world’s film map. We are delighted to see so many key works being written, shot, directed and produced by our own filmmakers, who push the boundaries of their industry. These past 8 days have shown just how enthusiastic, dedicated, and worthy all of our participants are. We are proud to say that we have been able to support these filmmakers on their journey to success and will continue do to so steadfastly in the future, especially given the success of the inaugural Dubai Distribution Programme. I wish all working in the regional cinematic industry the very best of luck for their upcoming projects, and hope to see their work at next year’s 12th edition of DIFF.” During the closing ceremony, a number of winners were presented with coveted prizes. The Young Journalist Award, supported by Gulf News, was presented by Mohammed Al Mezel, Managing Editor of the UAE’s largest English daily newspaper to Mais Al Amouri from the American University of Sharjah for her outstanding skills during coverage of DIFF. The People’s Choice Award was presented by Abulhamid Juma to Samba, directed by Oliver Nakache and Eric Toledano, - in an honour chosen by DIFF audiences. Masoud Amralla Al Ali, DIFF Artistic Director, said: “The caliber of entries we have seen at this year’s DIFF is outstanding – these writers, directors, producers and filmmakers are a real credit to their industry. I have seen first-hand over the past editions of the Festival how the productions being put forward have

Hotly-contested Muhr Awards Reward Region’s Best Filmmakers Dubai, December 17, 2014 – The hotly-contested annual Muhr Awards have once again rewarded the region’s best filmmakers for their dedicated work in the industry at the Dubai International Film Festival’s 11th edition. The Muhr Awards were presented to recipients by His Highness Sheikh Mansour Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum during a glittering ceremony at the Burj Al Arab. Categories in this year’s Awards are the Muhr Feature (for non-fiction and fiction feature films); the Muhr Emirati and Muhr Shorts. An array of competitive entries were received, making judging the films tougher than ever. The ceremony started by announcing the winner of the inaugural Ministry of Interior Award for Best Societal Screenplay, which goes to Emirati filmmaker Saeed Salmeen Al Murry for his project “Going to Heaven”. The inaugural Award will bestow a prize of $100,000 for Al Murry’s screenplay which this year addressed issues of child welfare.

award funds that have been used to create some of the globe’s most unique films. DIFF Artistic Director Masoud Amralla Al Ali, said: “The breadth and depth of the films being made here continue to astound me. Our filmmakers are not bound by the creative constraints of international markets, meaning their cinematic artistry isn’t fenced in. We at DIFF are proud that we have nurtured and supported such amazing works.” The 2014 winners were: MOI Award Saeed Salmeen Al Murry for “Going to Heaven” Muhr Emirati Best Jury Prize Mohammed Swaidan LA CONFESSION (THE CONFESSION) France & UAE

Abdulhamid Juma, Chairman, DIFF, said: “The past 11 years have brought out the best in the region’s filmmakers, whose work continues to evolve in leaps and bounds every year. Kinjal Pandya: People will take back nice message with AA TE KEVI DUNNIYA Of late it has lost its charm. But I believe films like AA TE KEVI DUNNIYA will once again up the Gujarati level.” Talking about her role, Kinjal says, “I am playing an over enthusiastic rich young girl, who is crazy for finding a suitable partner for her and getting married. She is ever restless single, who is on the look out to get mingled. My character’s name is ‘Anjali’, she is very ‘jhalli’ type, much on the lines of Kareena Kapoor from JAB WE MET.” Kinjal Pandya, who is currently wowing everyone with her TV soap ‘Qubool Hai’, has done copious Hindi serials and has also worked in Gujarati theatre. Now, she is gearing up for her debut AA TE KEVI DUNNIYA, a Gujarati film, produced by Vijay Khatri under the banner of Bhagat Entertainment and written & directed by Tejas Padiaa. Ask Kinjal how she bagged the film and she says, “I always wanted to do a Gujarati film but I wasn’t getting the desired projects. They were typical Gujarati films. Though initially I was refusing AA TE KEVI DUNNIYA when I got a call, I decided to do the film once I heard the story. I liked it so much that there was no point in giving a second thought.” Besides the story, Kinjal divulges that she took up AA TE KEVI DUNNIYA for its Bollywood style presentation. “As our tagline suggests ‘A Bollywood Gujarati Film’, right from cinematography to other technicalities, AA TE KEVI DUNNIYA has been packaged, designed a la Bollywood style. This was also one of the major reasons for me doing the film. I was so glad that a Gujarati film was being made on this level.” While Kinjal is disheartened about Gujarati filmmakers not giving enough attention to Gujarati Cinema, she is hopeful that AA TE KEVI DUNNIYA will enhance it. She says, “There are so many talented Gujarati filmmakers out there. But sadly they don’t want to exhibit it here. If they can churn out good Bollywood flicks, then why can’t they make a good Gujarati film? Earlier Gujarati Cinema was really meaningful.

While the story of AA TE KEVI DUNNIYA is about doing good deeds, Kinjal also believes in the theory of Karmas. “I totally believe in the Karma theory. And when people will watch the film, they too will relate with it and take back home some nice message. The film will win over hearts of the audiences with its comedy and lovely message. It will leave a mark on the minds,” says Kinjal. She adds, “AA TE KEVI DUNNIYA is a concept which has not been tried in Bollywood or Hollywood earlier. This is a fresh film. The story and idea of the film is so powerful that it will make people sit back and think. At least, after working on this film, I have started thinking in the direction of doing good deeds.” Kinjal is all praise for writer-director Tejas Padiaa and other crew of the film, “Tejas bhai is very down-to-earth and hilarious. The producers were so co-operative and helpful all the time. The entire team of AA TE KEVI DUNNIYA has been supportive. I had an amazing time with everyone. Truly, AA TE KEVI DUNNIYA will be an unforgettable experience for all of us.” AA TE KEVI DUNNIYA also stars Raj Jatania, Yatin Parmar, Sunil Vishrani, Jayesh More, Krishna Rawal, RajKumar Kanojia, Falguni Desai, Padmesh Pandit and Sanat Vyas and is all set to release on 9th January, 2015

Raspberry Creme Brulee This is seen as a special pudding but is easy to make. Any fruit can be used, although fresh seasonal varieties give the best results. Serves 4. INGREDIENTS 4 egg yolks 1 tsp (level) caster sugar 1 pint cream 1 tsp vanilla essence 1 box raspberries caster sugar for topping METHOD Mix egg yolks well with sugar. Put cream in a double saucepan, bring to scalding point then allow to cool. Pour cream over egg yolk mixture, blending well. Add vanilla essence and then return to the saucepan and thicken carefully over the heat stirring constantly. Don’t let it boil. It is ready when the cream mixture will cover and stick to the back of a spoon. Put raspberries into four glass dishes and then strain in the cream

mixture. Leave in the fridge for at least 2 hours. When cool and set, dust surface with caster sugar and caramelise with a cook’s blowtorch until crunchy. Tip: If you don’t have a cook’s blowtorch then put the Creme Brulee under the grill to brown - but put it in a dish with ice so you don’t cook the custard.
