South Africa’s premier wellness brands support
Several of SA’s leading health, wellness and fitness brands, including Liberty Medical Scheme and Pouyoukas Foods have partnered with the Look and Feel Good Expo 2013 for this year’s three-city health, beauty, fitness and wellbeing exhibitions.
T
Look & Feel Good Expo
he annual Look & Feel Good Expo (L&FGE) has grown exponentially, and is now positioned as the key wellness event in the country. An EXSA (Exhibition & Event Association of SA) Awards nominated exhibition, the L&FGE attracts tens of thousands of LSM 7-10+ visitors between the ages of 25 – 55 in Johannesburg, Cape Town and now also Durban, as well as over 400 exhibitors nationwide. This year, the event will include pageants, fitness contests, exciting new event features, highlights and competitions.
Lisa Raleigh has also been confirmed as the official ambassador of the Look & Feel Good Expo. Known throughout South Africa for her appearance as a trainer on The Biggest Loser, and her many appearances on TV, she says:
The 2013 Look & Feel Good Expo will take place from 11-13 October at the Durban Exhibition Centre, from 25-27 October at Sandringham Farm in Stellenbosch – alongside the Outdoor Expo – and from 8-10 November at the Coca-Cola dome in Johannesburg. Its growth reflects the growing local interest in health, fitness, beauty and wellness.
“I am thrilled to be a part of what promises to be the biggest and best Look & Feel Good Expo to date. With a Durban launch on the cards this year, it’s a privilege to be part of an initiative dedicated to spreading and celebrating wellness nationwide. I’ve been involved with the Expos for the last two years, and always look forward to sharing the social responsibility of promoting healthier and happier living. The 2012 expo was well attended and it boasted a great vibe and energy, something after my own heart.”
“When you look at what’s trending worldwide, it’s clear that the pursuit of health and wellness remain a global priority, as does the pursuit of beauty. This is certainly true of South Africa,” explains Heidi Warricker, MD of event organiser Biz Events.
Trojan Warriors® - a new fitness, body weight training and competition craze sweeping SA, is using the event platform to stage various legs of its 2014 provincial try-outs at the L&FGE. A Teen Trojan Warrior Mini tryout competition will also be staged.
Top local brands are aligning themselves with the event, through key sponsorships. Liberty Medical Scheme has committed to partnering the L&FGE in 2013 as part of its efforts to encourage healthy living. Liberty Medical Scheme Executive Principal Officer, Andrew Edwards, explains the synergies: “Contrary to popular belief that medical schemes are there mainly for the sick and elderly, the truth is that they play a key role in assisting younger people to maintain and manage their health, thereby potentially extending their lives for as long as possible. Our partnership with this premier health and wellness event once again proves that Liberty Medical Scheme is wholly dedicated to its promise to care for our members, in sickness and in health.” Be Fit 4 Life, a new health and fitness network set to take SA by storm from November, will stage its launch at the expo. The company will sponsor the Mr and Miss Body Beautiful SA pageants alongside the Expo, as well as introducing a Mr & Miss Body Beautiful Teen SA for the first time, bringing a host of celebrities to the event and staging a Celebrate Life After Party. Pouyoukas Foods will sponsor the Pouyoukas Look & Feel Good Kitchen, where it will host daily cooking demonstrations and talks featuring nutrition experts and media personality Lisa Raleigh. “We’re very excited about our participation in the Look & Feel Good Expo, because our products are such a good fit for this event,” says Justine Pearl, brand manager for Pouyoukas Foods.

Longevity Magazine has signed up to sponsor the VIP Pamper Lounge and Spa experience in all three cities, where guests who purchase the VIP ticket will enjoy spa-style pampering and giveaways. Guvon Spas, co-sponsor of the VIP spa experience in Johannesburg, says it has aligned with the event because the L&FGE is one of the top expos to attend in the beauty and spa industry. Belinda Cooper, Group Spa Marketing, PR & Social Media, says: “It is an honour for us as a group to build a relationship with such a brand. We are looking forward to the expo and hope to attract great new clients that we can pamper at our spas.” Colleen Abrahams, Managing Director of The Hydro, and co-sponsor of the VIP Pamper Lounge and Spa experience in Cape Town says The Hydro has participated in the L&FGE in both Johannesburg and Cape Town, and has always had a good response from it. “It is a very good fit for us, because as one of only two hydros in the Southern Hemisphere, we offer a complete range of hydrotherapy and detox treatments, among numerous other therapies. So our focus is on overall health.” Sponsorship packages for areas including the Yoga and Pilates Studio, the Dance and Movement Stage and the Healing Herb and Tea Garden are still available. She even has an international music career which no other Indian actresses would have even dreamt of. She has also had the honour of lending her voice to a character in Disney release Planes.
Priyanka Chopra Page 16
www.saindia.com
SAIndia, brings to in an exclusive interview with Priyanka Chopra, who is just out of a double personal crises, her father’s demise and the controversy with Shah Rukh Khan and is getting back to normalcy and taking charge of her life with utmost grit and determination. Priyanka, you have faced the biggest tragedy of your life? Yes, I don’t think anything can be worse than this. My tattoo (Daddy’s lil girl) keeps reminding me of him and I go back to those golden memories that i had with my dad. I was very dependent and close to my father. According to me, i was a very nice daughter. In fact I am very happy that i could realise his dream of becoming a professional singer. I have lost the biggest support system in my life. I am completely shattered but i put up a brave front as I have to take care of my mom. Shah Rukh helped you and was a great support to you during your father’s funeral? Yes, of course. He was there with me throughout. In fact I really admire the fact that he too had an injury and still was there for all the arrangements, like a true friend. But Priyanka post that, there has been no news as such on twitter from both of you? I don’t understand why controversies are created. In fact he got busy with the promotions of Chennai Express and I too got busy with my work and music. There are rumours about all not being well between you and Shahrukh Khan? I don’t know how to answer that. In fact when we used to talk there were rumours about a link up and now that we are busy with our own work, then it seems that we are not on talking terms. I personally like to keep good relations with everyone in the industry. Did you know about Shahrukh and Gauri having a baby? It is their personal life and I really do not get in to anyone’s personal life. If someone feels like sharing something about their life with me, I listen, but I do not dig in to anyone’s personal life. You were not invited for a grand Eid bash at Mannat where almost the entire industry was present. No comment and you will have to ask the host about what and why. Talking about films, what is in your kitty right now. Thank God. It’s my topic now. I am a very committed person and Idont let anything come between my career. Just a few days after my dad passed away, I was back on the sets to shoot for Mary Kom’s biopic. I am really fond of the film and giving it my hundred percent. Alongside, I have started with the promotions of Zanjeer and Krrish 3. What about your career in the West? I am very blessed and privileged to be accepted in the West. I met the former Indian Idol judges Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul and Exotic has been declared as the theme song for the Guiness International
Champions Cup, a soccer tournament to be held in Spain. Also, I have lent my voice to a central character named Ishani in Planes. So obviously, it’s going great guns. So LA is your second home? Of course not. I love to stay back in India, with my mom. I have lot of friends here and most importantly my work. But yes, my visit to LA is more frequent and I have to spend considerable time there also because of work commitments. You are doing an item number in Ram Leela, which was reportedly rejected by Ash? Yes. I have done an item number in Ram Leela, but I am not aware of who rejected it. Your mom must be lonely too? Yes, she feels very lonely. That’s the reason, I want to stay back home to keep her company. I try and be a good daughter to my mom. Recently on her birthday, I had a small dinner party at home and invited her closest friends over to my place. It’s my turn now to be with her and be a strong factor in her life. You have never gone wrong with your fashion sense? I was never a fashion conscious person, but with every passing film, i have become better and better. I always opt for ease and comfort but I am a very stylish person. My fashion personality is edgy, modern and forward. I do not follow any brand or designer. If it looks good on me i wear it. It’s just about carrying yourself in whatever you wear. I do not run after labels. You might have the best designer clothes on you, but if you lack in confidence fashion faux pas. You are seen in all types of outfits from denims to skirts to gowns.... As I said, I like to dress right for the occasion. I love to wear skirts. They make you look sexy and plus they are the recent fashion trend. It’s just about the confidence within you that makes you look good from outside. Then even if you are wearing a plain tee with denims, it makes you look stylish. Who is your fashion idol? Audrey Hepburn, Victoria Beckham and Princess Kate. They are all so elegant and stylish. Among Indians, I really admire Gayatri Devi for her grace and elegance. Favourite shopping destination? Of course LA. I go there often and during my break in between shoots I take my cousin Divya along for shopping. It’s great fun to shop there. We have heard that you have an endless collection of shoes? Yes, even I don’t know how many pairs of shoes i have. I have been lucky to have my shoes designed at the Ferragamo museum in Florence. It was amazing to be chosen as the first Indian actor to be part of this museum. How important is box office performances? For me, box office is king. It’s great that people appreciate my work because I work bloody hard. I make sure I’m not mediocre. But beyond that, it’s not in my control and that’s frustrating.

D L OB S E B AB I n the 100 years of Indian cinema, women have evolved in many ways. While bold scenes and showing of skin on the silver screen was a relative taboo, many actresses moved ahead with the times. They shed such inhibitions to flaunt it all. However when it comes to marriage or being in a committed relationship, these actresses have gone a step further and said a strict no to don bikinis or to do intimate scenes.
The same does not hold true in Hollywood, where we have seen actresses like Halle Barry doning a coral bikini in Die Another Day, Demi Moore’s topless act in Striptease and Kate Winslet’s nude portrait in Titanic. However India has a different story to tell; Sharmila Tagore, years back wore a blue costume in An Evening in Paris and even graced the cover of Filmfare magazine in a polka dot bikini. This was the first appearance in a bikini of an Indian actress and it also established Tagore’s role as somewhat of a sex symbol in Bollywood. Wearing a bikini put her name in the Indian press as one of Bollywood’s ten hottest actresses of all time and was a transgression of female identity through a reversal of the state of modesty, which functions as a signifier of femininity in Mumbai films. She married Late Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and since then was never seen in such skimpy clothing. When Tagore was the chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification, she expressed concerns about the rise of the bikini in Indian films. Dimple Kapadia too, wore a red bikini in Bobby. By the time Bobby released, she married actor Rajesh Khanna at a young age of 16. Post marriage she refused to do any films. but despite everything, her marriage did not last long and they separated in 1982. Dimple went ahead to Page 20

do many films after her marriage ended and later she was even seen in a black swimming costume in Saagar seducing Rishi Kapoor.
Madhuri wore a costume twice. Once in Tezaab and the second time in Mujrim. But she looked hotter in Tezaab and hotter than Mandakini who also donned a black swimming costume in the film. A rare scene coming from Madhuri Dixit. She has even done item numbers like Dhak Dhak and Choli Ke Peeche. Post her marrige in 1999, to US based surgeon, Dr. Sriram Nene, Madhuri settled in the US, forgot about films and took care of her family. After a long hiatus, she returned back to India and has taken up film offers. But whether or not she will be seen in a bold avatar in her film Dedh Ishquiya, remains to be seeen. Even though Kareena Kapoor Khan maintained in her interviews that she does not mind doing bold or intimate scenes and sporting a bikini, if the script demands, she reportedly rejected Tigmanshu Dhulia’s upcoming film Begum Samru, as it contained a lot of body exposure. Rani Mukherjee too was approached for the role, but she too rejected the offer as she is in a committed relationship with Aditya Chopra. He is now looking for an international actor who will play the role. Years back, Amitabh Bachchan had reportedly asked the kissing scenes between Aishwarya and Hrithik to be axed as Aishwarya was by then already engaged to his son Abhishek. Since Dhoom 2, Aishwarya has neither donned a bikini nor done any intimate scenes. But as we have seen, there are exceptions to the rule and the same holds true with some actresses like Chitrangaga Singh and Vidya Balan. Chitrangada was married much before she debuted in Bollywood and was seen in intimate scenes in her first film Hazaaron Kh-
waishein Aisi. Vidya too had no qualms doing bold scenes in Ghanchakkar, opposite Emran Hashmi, which was her first film after her wedding to UTV head Siddharth Roy Kapoor. We see that most actresses are rooted to Indian culture and the traditions of the Indian family and it also goes to show that our films are not hits and super hits on the basis of these scenes and the bold avatars of the actresses but over a period of time, a good script and a good story line does the magic.

John Abraham to team up with MS Dhoni to buy Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni who’s busy promoting English Premier League through TV commercials, could soon be relishing his passion for football by cheering for his own team in the upcoming Indian Premier Football League. To add to that, Bollywood actor John Abraham is reportedly all set to partner the captain in this joint venture. John Abraham is certainly not the first celebrity to drift into this business as Shahrukh Khan, Preity Zinta and others have previously ventured into this field. Shahrukh has been heard saying he wants to buy another Kolkata-based team and might just buy the football franchise of Bengal city. According to sources, Dhoni and John Abraham who’re both crazy about bikes and football, might come together to buy a football franchise in the league which is proposed by IMG-Reliance.
It’s official: Kareena Kapoor finally adds Khan to her name Kareena Kapoor Khan. That’s how her name appears in the credits of her just released flick ‘Satyagraha’. Kareena Kapoor got married to Saif Ali Khan in October last year, post which she had done one film Talaash, which did not carry her surname Khan in the opening credits. Post marriage, our Bollywood ladies usually are reluctant to change their names, especially when they are at the peak of their career. We have seen a number of Bollywood stars play with different spellings for the luck factor. As per numerology, Kareena now has triple ‘K’ in her name which certainly adds more power to her. Apparently, ‘K’ as an initial stands for strong will. The actress currently has three films namely Gori Tere Pyaar Mein with Imran Khan is already in production, Shuddhi with Hrithik Roshan will soon go on the floors and one movie with Emraan Hashmi for which she will start shooting soon. Shraddha A Salla, a tarot card and numerologist, analyses KKK’s new name. She says this change will work very well for the actress personally as well as professionally, “Kareena is strongly ruled by Jupiter, the planet of growth and abundance. Jupiter supports creativity and entertainment and makes one rise to his/her peak in this profession. Not only is Kareena’s birth and destiny number ruled by Jupiter, but also her name vibration. By adding Khan to her name, she is including the family name into her subconscious mind, which will work positively for her as she will always have their support and respect. With Saif, she has created an energy of total acceptance and bonding by taking his name.” She adds, “New opportunities in films and other fields related to media will open up. Starting of a new venture like a production house is very likely. Health wise, this energy might make her a bit emotional and lazy, but her nature of always bouncing back will solve the issue. She will become calm, mature and become more receptive to people around her.” Page 30

Big B gifts Jaya a house in Paris Amitabh Bachchan has always been fascinated by the fashion capital of the world, Paris. He and Jaya Bachchan are one of the most respected Bollywood couples. The respect and the love that both of them show for each other is heartwarming. Two years ago Amitabh took Jaya to France on their anniversary. They both liked peaceful time away from family and friends and this is where Jaya immediately fell in love with the romantic city of Paris. They both enjoyed their holiday and wished to spend some more time there. Two years later, Amitabh Bachchan gifted his wife a house in Paris. Jaya is very happy with her latest property and is busy doing up the house. Well, that obviously means that now Amitabh and Jaya will frequent between Mumbai and Paris. However, when Amitabh was asked about this, he sent a message saying, “This is not entirely correct... I’m out of the country and will be back in a few days.” A couple of months back, the Bachchans acquired a huge property behind their present bungalow, Jalsa. The property is worth 50 crores. It is assumed that the growing family and the addition of a new member, Aaradhya, led the Bachchans to think of expansion and hence they
bought this property just behind their residence. The property is in the name of father-son duo Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan. So, with the addition of the new house in Paris, the Bachchans own six properties. Five of them are in Mumbai and the sixth one is in Paris. Recently Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan celebrated their 40 years of wedlock. They were married on 3rd June 1973. The couple is an epitome of successful marriages in Bollywood. The first time, Amitabh and Jaya worked together was in ‘Zanjeer’. The movie was released in 1973. After the movie, they got married. Then they worked on ‘Abhimaan’ which was a huge success. In 1975, they again worked together in ‘Sholey’ and ‘Mili’. After these two movies, Jaya took a break from films. She looked after her family and her two kids, Abhishek and Shweta. In 1981, ‘Silsila’ was released. Amitabh was alleged to have had a flame with Rekha. The rumours got stronger with time, but the couple sailed through that difficult time. In 2000, Jaya made a comeback and the couple was seen again in ‘Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham’. Since then Jaya has been active in Bollywood.

Assault Case: Om Puri granted anticipatory bail An interim relief for veteran actor Om Puri. He was granted anticipatory bail by a Mumbai sessions court for a domestic violence case registered by his wife Nandita Puri at the Versova police station. The actor moved an anticipatory bail on Tuesday and the session court granted his bail application. Om Puri has been booked under sections 324 (punishment for causing hurt by dangerous means), 504 and 506 under Indian panel court. On August 22, Nandita lodged a complaint against her husband for physically assaulting her with a wooden stick. She stated that when she had a fight with Puri over maintenance of the flat he lost his cool and hit her. The incident reportedly took place at Puri’s apartment in the Sushil building located at Seven Bungalows in Versova, Andheri. Om in his bail application stated that his wife had made a false allegation against him. He claimed that he has been living separately from her for the last three years and just went to meet their son that day. The actor further argued that his wife Nandita was demanding money from him to buy and expensive mobile phone for her maid servant who tied rakhi on their son but he refused. “I reasoned that I too was using a regular mobile and there was no question of gifting an expensive mobile worth Rs 14,000 to the girl,” Om states in the application. The actor said, Nandita got angry and told him that he could spend a huge amount of money on his “mistresses” but could not pay for this gift. As the heated argument caught momentum, Puri, got up to leave, but Nandita “walked up to him and caught his collar whereby he then pushed her and left the house. Om denies beating his wife. “I had returned from Kolkata on August 25th, so how could I have beaten her on August 23rd,” he said. “She has accused me of beating her with a stick whereas she has just got a scratch. Now you tell me, is it possible that if I hit her with a stick, she gets only scratched,” the 63-year-old said. He said his wife is very demanding. “She insists on going on international holidays annually. I am a middle-class man and a character artist. I am not Shahrukh Khan that I have so much money,” he said.
Amitabh Bachchan wears earrings on shoes in KBC
Yes, you heard that right. This season of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ is unique in many ways. One of the most unique features among all is that Amitabh Bachchan will fashion a new trend by wearing earrings on his shoes. When asked about it, the 70 year old actor said, “This is just for style. I took a few earrings from my house and did this style.” This will be shown in the first episode. Among the other unique features, legendary singer Sonu Nigam will perform a medley of Amitabh Bachchan’s songs. Also, this season of KBC will have five lifelines. The fifth lifeline will be called ‘Power Paplu lifeline’. Once the contestants use all four lifelines, the fifth paplu gives them the freedom to choose any one of the four lifelines again. This is required as the prize money for this season has gone up and this time it is Rs. seven crores. This will be the seventh season of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’. The show will be telecasted from Friday to Sunday at 8.30 pm on Sony entertainment channel. With only a few days to go for the biggest reality show of Indian television, promos of KBC are being aired. In an interview Amitabh took no credit for the popularity of this show. He has been the host of the show for many seasons. He said, “I take zero credit. The most important part of the show is the show itself. It’s very well constructed and not just a simple question and answer thing. Intense research has gone into it. Anybody can run the show. It’s running in 127 countries and I am not there in those countries, I am only here in India. There is an intrinsic value in the show.” “Season 7 will be maha crorepati and this time the prize will be Rs. 7 crores. Its back, bigger, better and brighter with format tweaks”, said Siddhartha Basu, CMD, Big Synergy Media Ltd. Ahead of the seventh season, Amitabh Bachchan still seems to get butterflies. He tweeted, ““Beg forgiveness ! Need to rest after a very long day..first days of all ventures are thus..BUT after the morrow connect will thrive.” He further tweeted, “It’s not the work load that kills you .. it’s the expectation on it, from the outside world that destroys you !!”
Sridevi to share screen space with Meryl Streep

Producers Jeremy Wall and Jerry Leider were discussing for quite some time to bring the two power packed performers of Hollywood and Bollywood in one frame. If things work as per plan then very soon we will get to see Hollywood Golden Globe winner, Meryl Streep sharing screen space with Padma Shri Sridevi in the film titled ‘Cowboys And Indians’ to be directed by 43-year-old director Amy Redford, daughter of Hollywood legend, Robert Redford. Sixty threeyear-old Meryl will represent the cowboys and the 50-year-old Sridevi heading the Indians. Both the actresses have shown their interest for the film. After a long hiatus, Sridevi returned to movies with Gauri Shinde ‘English Vinglish’ and impressed one and all. The film won huge accolades in India and abroad. Sridevi’s manager Punkej Kharbanda confirmed the news, “Yes, we are happy to have received communication about a project with Ms. Meryl Streep.” Sridevi’s doting husband Boney Kapoor said, “Yes, Sri has received the script for the project that you’ve mentioned with Meryl Streep. We’re yet to read it. Our daughter Jhanvi will read and approve it first. Only then would Sridevi and I go through it. Kareena stops husband Saif Ali Khan from kissing Post marriage, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor has maintained a no-kissing clause. Kareena made a stance that neither she nor her husband Saif Ali Khan will kiss on-screen. Walking on the rule that she has made post-marriage, Kareena Kapoor has refused to kiss her on-screen partner Emraan Hashmi and Hrithik Roshan in ‘Shuddi’. This is applicable for Saif as well. Kareena Kapoor was approached to lock-lips with Emraan Hashmi in Ekta Kapoor’s next but the diva made it clear that she will never kiss in movies. When a script was narrated to Saif and the film demanded a kissing scene, Kareena who was also present during the narration totally put her disapproval on the table. She claimed if she will not kiss on-screen then Saif will do same. Convinced with his wife’s point, Saif asked the writers to drop the scene and rework the script. Both Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan has locked lips on-screen. The actress has smooched Akshay Kumar in ‘Kambakhqt Ishq’ while Saif kissed Deepika in ‘Love Aaj Kaal’. When Bebo was asked whether her life has changed after marriage, she replied, “This ‘life changes after marriage’ is a myth. Look, Saif and I were together even before we got married. I was in a live-in relationship with him. Marriage was something I needed to strengthen the bond. Moreover, Saif is my best friend too. He understands me perfectly. We were in love, we are in love and we shall remain in love. Inshallah”. Apart from the no-kissing policy, post marriage, Kareena has made another strict no-clause. She would never dance in any weddings as Saif and her father Randhir Kapoor dislikes the idea. She said “Yes. Saif and my father (Randhir) were not comfortable with the idea. Also, there is no need for me to dance at weddings. Life is not just about money”.
Ekta Kapoor at loggerheads with Imran Khan Producer Ekta Kapoor and Bollywood actor Imran Khan’s tussle has gone worse as both of them are not ready to stop the blame game. Their relationship turned sour basically after ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara’ promotional activities. It is heard that Imran is not happy with the aggressive promotion style of Ekta. Ekta and Imran have been exchanging arguments and it seems to be a non-stop affair. If one says something, the other bounces back immediately. Imran said that he loved working with director Milan Luthria but not happy with the promotional activities. “When you have hits, people cosy up, when you have flops, they pull you down. I find it amusing. This industry is unbelievable,” says Ekta who hit back at Imran Khan on the aggressive promotional activities statement. Imran on the contrary said, “I don’t want to say anything bad publicly. Jeetuji (Jeetendra) has known our family for years. So out of respect for Jeetuji, I won’t say anything about this. I don’t want to be disrespectful towards anyone.” Ekta said she had a great time working with Akshay Kumar and Milan Luthria with whom she has worked on ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai’, and ‘The Dirty Picture’ and now ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara’. “There will always be some bad experiences, but you have to live with them. We are not in the business of saving lives”, says an agitated Ekta Kapoor. Well, Imran had to face the consequences of the tiff. He was replaced by Ekta Kapoor with Shahid Kapoor in Milan Talkies next. On replacing Imran with Shahid Kapoor she says, “Milan Talkies requires a certain aggression and push. I am not commenting on any actor as I find it embarrassing to discuss that. Milan Talkies is the hottest film on our plate right now.” It is rumoured that Imran wished Shahid Kapoor good luck sarcastically. “I simply wished a co-actor good luck”, says Imran Khan. “People have different opinions and they don’t always need to agree with each other. The movie will be directed by actor director Tigmanshu Dhulia of ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ fame.
Karan Johar snubs Shahrukh, set to direct Salman Way back in 1998, Karan Johar directed Salman Khan in ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ but when Karan’s friendship with Shahrukh grew stronger, he maintained a distance from Salman Khan but of late the duo has been bonding in a big way on reality shows. It was reported that Salman will appear in Karan Johar’s talk show, ‘Koffee With Karan’ and Karan is keen to work with Salman after a long time. The filmmaker is believed to have roped in Salman for his next project. According to a report, Karan will make an official announcement of the project very soon. Karan and Salman are also related to one another professionally. Sallu’s business manager Reshma Shetty is reportedly managing Karan Johar’s account. Their camaraderie was noticed during reality shows and they seem to be great buddies. Karan and Shahrukh’s friendship is an example for the industry but for quite some time things are not well between the two. For some reason, they are keeping distances. When lots had been said and written about King Khan and Karan Johar’s rivalry, the filmmaker put a full stop on the report by saying Shahrukh is like family. Karan Johar said, “I think a lot has been said and cleared. I am not going to talk about my personal life.” While speaking during an event Karan Johar said, “He (SRK) is like family…I think that answers all questions.” Page 33

Karisma Kapoor has finally moved on from her troubled marriage with Delhi based businessman Sanjay Kapur. The mother of two moved on with her life and has found new love. The man in question is a graduate from Duke University in the US. The relationship is in its initial stage and now both are trying to get to know each other. Lolo’s gang including Malaika Arora Khan and her sister Arpita are supporting Karisma. Ever since Karisma got married to Sanjay in 2003, she was in the news for her disturbed marital life. Trouble in the marriage began from the first year of marriage. Karisma’s wedding life was under scrutiny from the very beginning. She gave everything to her married life but Sanjay was not loyal to her. After marriage, he entered into an illegal relationship with Delhi socialite Priya Chatwal. Karisma and her family made several attempts to bring Sanjay on the right track, but their efforts backfired as he turned a deaf ear and continued his relationship with Priya. The duo has filed for divorce and talks are going on over their children’s custody. The couple remained tight-lipped about their divorce but a close source reveals, “Looks like it’s time for them to make it official. “They’ve been through discussions about this (a divorce) of late. They’re now trying to come upon an agreement where they can get mutual custody of the two children. As the kids are too young to decide for themselves, talks are on over how they will manage it as both Karisma and Sanjay live in different cities. Once they come to a solid conclusion on that, they will file for divorce.” The couple has two children, Samaira and Kiaan Raj. The two separated after the birth of their first child Samaira but they somehow reconciled again. After Karisma gave birth to her second child Kiaan Raj, the duo almost called off their relationship. For a long time, Karisma has been living separately from Sanjay. Sanjay’s alleged affair with Delhi-based entrepreneur Priya Chatwal have been doing the rounds for quite some time. However, Sanjay slammed the divorce report. He said, “Why don`t you ask Karisma what really happened then? She is a celebrity. If she is not saying anything, it is because this is none of anyone`s business.” Kapur’s spokesperson cleared the air about their divorce and said, “Mr Kapoor wants Karisma back in Delhi. It is not easy for him to go on living alone. It`s been seven years.” On many occasions, Sanjay was spotted hanging out with Priya Sachdev (ex-wife of NRI businessman Vikram Chatwal) and his close association with Priya raised many eyebrows. Denying the affair, Kapur’s spokesperson said, “She is just a good friend he hangs out with.”

Mallika’s birthday wish for Modi in a seductive way Inspired by late actress Marilyn Monroe’s style of wishing the then US president, John F Kennedy on his 45th birthday in 1962, our semi-desi Mallika Sherawat tried a similar stunt for much talked about prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi. On Tuesday, 17th September, Narendra Modi turned 63. Mallika Sherawat released a 24 second video on You Tube. Draped in a pink top and a jacket, Mallika says, “I want to send a birthday wish to the most eligible bachelor in India. Happy birthday Narender-ji, Happy Birthday Narender Modiji.” Her tone was quite seductive as if she was narrating some hot dialogue in a shooting. Only she knows whether it was a genuine wish or a publicity stunt. Or if Mallika wants to secure her career as Narendra Modi as one of the promising candidates for the 2014 general elections. Mallika has also made her way to the small screen. From next month she will be seen in a show called ‘The Bachelorette India- Mere Khayalon Ki Mallika’ which is based on the concept of an International show, ‘The Bachelorette’. In this show, 30 contestants will compete for Mallika’s hand. The show is aimed at finding a match for Mallika. On the show, about Narendra Modi, she had said, “Narendra Modi was India’s most eligible bachelor.” She also added, “He is smart, progressive and misunderstood, just like me.” Well, Mallika, we agree you are making the right moves. One of the comments on the said video states, “She looks so desperate to gain attention.” Well, Narendra Modi has not reacted to her birthday message. He must be thinking why it had to be him in such crucial circumstances when his image meant a lot for the general elections. Narendra Modi was a tea vendor at a tea stall at Ahmedabad tea market. He is an inspiration and a role model for many. After school, he used to help his brother and father at the stall. Their house didn’t have electricity. He went to the Himalayas for 2 years to study Hindutva. But lack of money again forced him to work at the tea stall. He is known to be a great orator. He did a three month course in the US on public relations and image management. He considers Swami Vivekananda as his idol. His recent election campaign was named Vivekanand Yuva Vikas Yatra. Gymnema Sylvestre D
iabetes has become a very common heath problem. The main cause is lack of adequate insulin production to manage the level of glucose in your blood. While there is no cure for diabetes, with your blood sugar level under control you can live a totally normal life. There are various natural remedies for diabetes that will help you control your blood sugar level. Here are the top 2 herbal remedies for Diabetes. Gymnema sylvesre and Bitter melon or Karela are herbal supplements that are growing in popularity as a way to decrease blood sugar levels, help fight obesity, and lower blood triglycerides. Gymnema, also commonly referred to as Gymnema sylvestre, is an herb that grows in south central India, where it was first used in naturopathy or alternative medicine for its potential health benefits. Due to its effects on how the body reacts to and regulates sugar, many believe that this herb can have a positive effect on diabetes and obesity, as well as other conditions. The strongest active components of the plant are called gymnemic acids, taken from either the leaves or root. The acids affect two particular areas of the body. First, they can permeate the taste buds on the tongue that detect sweet flavours. As the acids are digested, they act on the surface of the intestines. In both places, the herb is able to help decrease the intake of sugars. By inhibiting sugar absorption, Gymnema could help to lower and regulate blood sugar levels, and it is used widely as a supplement for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The herb has also demonstrated the ability to aid the body’s production of insulin. This may be because it can stimulate the growth of cells in the pancreas, the organ that produces insulin.
Gymnema may have value within an appetite suppression spectrum. During digestion, gymnemic acids have a “sugar blocking” property. Structurally, gymnemic acids are very similar to glucose and behave in the intestine in a similar way. When gymnemic acids lock in to intestinal receptors, they effectively lock out glucose. This prevents sugar from being absorbed. This effect has a twofold benefit in that it helps balance blood sugar, and it promotes lean body mass by lessening the amount of sugar that gets stored as fat. Bitter melon, also known as bitter gourd or karela, is a unique vegetable-fruit that can be used as food or medicine. It is the edible part of the plant Momordica Charantia, which is a vine of the Cucurbitaceae family and is considered the most bitter among all fruit and vegetables. In addition to being a food ingredient, bitter melon has also long been used as a herbal remedy for a range of ailments, including type 2 diabetes.
The fruit contains active substances with anti-diabetic properties, including Charantin, which has been confirmed to have a blood lowering glucose effect, Vicine and an insulin-like compound, known as polypeptide-p. These substances either work individually or together they increase glucose uptake and glycogen synthesis in the liver, muscle, and adipose tissue and also improve glucose tolerance. This synergistic effect also increases insulin secretion, tissue glucose uptake, liver muscle glycogen synthesis, glucose oxidation, and decreases the synthesis of glucose from molecules that are not from carbohydrates, such as amino and fatty acids. It is also known that bitter melon contains a Lectin that reduces blood glucose concentrations by acting on peripheral tissues and suppressing appetite - similar to the effects of insulin in the brain.
The Gymnema plant contains a number of compounds, such as acidic glycosides and anthroquinones. The primary bioactive constituent of Gymnema, known as Gymnemic acid, is found in Both these herbal remedies can aid in controlling blood sugar the leaves and roots. Gymnemic acids are sweetness inhibitors, simply put, chewing Gymnema leaves will reduce the taste levels, but most importantly make sure you follow a balanced diet and regular exercise part of your daily routine. of sugar or “sweetness,” in the mouth, which explains its Hindi name, Gurmar, “destroyer of sugar.” The temporary effect is noticed with both artificial and natural sweeteners, and suggests

T
he curtains on Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2013 came down with one of the most stunning Grand Finales. Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s magnificent range, inspired by the limited edition Lakmé Absolute Royal collection, had the audience spellbound with its beauty. The black wood panelled ramp lit on either side set the mood, while the seven chandeliers on stage and ramp created a vintage ambience. Rows of twinkling bulbs covered the ceiling, mirrors lined the backdrop, large clumps of red roses added colour to the backdrop and silver pillars recreated the classy interior of a gentleman’s jazz nightclub in London. The Lakmé Absolute Royal products that inspired Sabyasachi’s collection are a tribute to the regal era of queens and they offer a rich shade palette across Lakme Absolute Creme Lip Colours, Absolute Shine Line Eyeliner and Absolute Royal Nail Colours. The gorgeous creations that floated down the ramp would have thrilled many a statuesque queen of the past eras as the stately outfits in shades of jewel tones as well as regal hues, were a vision of beauty. This season Sabyasachi reinforced the juxtaposition of maximalism against minimalism, with a whimsical design theme. These elements were unified by a youthful essence in the form of sheer saris paired with mini skirt petticoats, micro mini dresses, peplum silhouettes with structured, panelled/ quilted sport jackets, waistcoats and cropped tops. Amidst the lace work and Kashmiri embroidered embellishment were delicate signature Sabyasachi prints that were given weight with intricate panelling and layering. Acid burned zardosi gilded a rich khadi leopard print that was a novel facet of the entire showcase that embodied the feline suave of the modern maharani of a metropolis. With a dramatic opening that saw a live performance of “Feeling Good” by Rachel Varghese, the audience rocked to popular hit tunes of the past. The theme from the film “Pink Panther” filled the Ballroom of the Hotel Grand Hyatt, as Indrani Dasgupta glided on the ramp in a luxurious crystal choli, net sari over printed lehenga. Sabyasachi unveiled one of the most sensational collections of 57 couture creations ever seen on the ramp. Pairs of sherwanis and bundgalas in black/ red with tonal embroidery were
created for Him and Her. Lace appeared in black/nude for sensuous gowns. The all-black lace sari with long sleeved choli with mini petticoat, the belted jacket in brocade, quilted midi skirt, hip length machined kurta over flared skirt and the noir lace gown recreated the glamour of the era when women dressed like queens. The pair of horizontal striped knit cholis with chamois satin pastel saris having lace kalis were elegant in their serene glamour. Velvet was the favoured choice of Sabyasachi for the cholis, skirts or combined with embellished net for the saris. Cholis were sedate with long sleeves at times topped with waistcoats. Men’s wear was colourful with sherwanis, Jodhpuri jackets and bundgalas in printed or plain fabric. The makeup, done by Lakme Makeup Expert Clint Fernandes was dominated by accentuated red lips and smoky eyes with lots of Kohl recreating the beauty and glamour of the opulent era. Footwear was innovative with fabric and leather boots/shoes, some with matching spats and a few embellished mojris that followed the mood of the collection. Jewellery from The Gem Palace the official jewellers of the Royal family of Jaipur complemented the gorgeous creations. Talking about the grandeur he showcased, Sabyasachi Mukherjee said, “Nothing is more royal than beautiful eyes lined with thick winged liner and a rich toned red lip. This was the central touch point of the whole collection that brought it all together. The Lakmé woman is very feminine, dynamic and strong, minimal make up with the maximum effect is essential. I absolutely love the vintage feel that we have created for this winter/festive season at Lakmé Fashion Week.” Speaking at the finale, Purnima Lamba, Head of Innovation, Lakmé mentioned, ‘It’s a moment of pride for us at Lakmé as we witnessed one of the most avant garde translations of the Lakmé beauty statement. Sabyasachi has always been synonymous with royalty and it was an exciting journey to cocreate the contemporary royal looks for the festive season with him. Whether it is regal colours and silhouettes or the imperial red lips, we are confident that we will see the statement of opulent royalty off the runways this winter-festive in a big way.” The show fittingly brought down curtains to another immensely successful season of Lakme Fashion Week. Singh is King M
ika made his debut on the Indipop scene piggybacking on the success of older brother Daler Mehndi. Unlike Daler, who restricts his bravado to his costumes, Mika became as well known for his brawling as for his bhangra. Between pouncing on starlet Rakhi Sawant and torturing TV audiences with his dancing in Jhalak Dikhla Jaa, Mika has also released a few albums where he wrote the songs, composed, arranged, played and sang in his characteristic nasal twang. His stage performances are as over the top as the man himself. Your father was a trained classical musician. How did the introduction to music happen? Mika Singh: I come from a family where music is in the blood. My father was a trained classical musician. My eldest brother, Daler paaji, too, started off with his singing profession when I was a teenager. At a very early age, I mastered various musical instruments like the tabla, harmonium, and guitar, not to mention being trained in classical music. I know how to play over 30 musical instruments. So the introduction to music was at a very early age, not something I specifically chose but was around since I was born. Did you fear comparisons with your brother when you started out? MS: Not at all; we have been gifted with different voices. And we also have different styles of singing. Anyway, there is nothing to be fearful of; he is my elder brother and a great musician. What do you enjoy more as an artist--recordings or live concerts? MS: I love singing songs, and the energy of the studio when music is created is infectious. All the talented musicians, singer, and a composer come together on one table to make one good melody; it’s a joint effort. When the song releases and people appreciate it, then it all is worth the hard work. Besides, live concerts have a different high altogether, with immediate audience reaction. And only when you have good songs in your kitty to perform live, the audience will enjoy your performance. I love performing live, and the spontaneity and energy which comes to me as a performer can rarely come in a studio. Both recordings and live concerts are fun. Controveries don’t see to leave you? Unlike others, I don’t need to cook up controversies to be in the news. Controversies just happen to me by chance. I’m a controversy magnet. Controversies come and go but they haven’t dimmed my fan following. I may have a bad boy image but my fans know I’m a good guy at heart.I wouldn’t have excelled in the live stage show business if Page 52

I always wanted to be a music director. But after releasing my first album, my future was set.
I will definitely get married. My choice of a life-partner would be a seedhi saadi Punjabi kudi who’d be patient enough to live with an artiste and deal with the eccentricities and controversies that come with the pack-
If you had not become a singer, what would you be doing?

hiruananthapuram, the jewel in the emerald necklace that Kerala is for the Indian sub-continent, must surely have Parasuramanbeen a “must see” destination for ages, long before National Geographic Traveller classified it as one. Surely long before Sage Parasurama , according to local legend, threw his divine battle axe from Kanyakumari to Gokarnam to wrest Kerala, God’s own land, from the Varuna the sea god; before the times of Mahabali the democratic and just ruler of this wonderful land who was sent down to the netherworld through deceit. It doesnt take any flights of fancy to imagine that this land fired the imaginations of intrepid travellers and explorers like Columbus, Vasco da Gama, Marco Polo, Fa Hien, and quite possibly, countless others from the pages of history, recorded or not. Thiruvananthapuram, or Trivandrum, as it was conveniently re-christened by the English, is the southern-most district and Thiruvananthapuram city is the district headquarters as well as the State capital of Kerala. Thiru Anantha Puram, or the city of the Holy Anantha, is named after Ananthan, the cosmic serpent with a thousand heads, on whose coils Lord Mahavishnu reclines. This iconic representation is theSri Padmanabhaswamy chief deity in the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple. The temple was built by King Marthanda Varma of the Travancore Royal family when, in 1745, he shifted the Travancore capital from Padmanabhapuram in the south (today in the neighbouring State of Tamil Nadu) to Thiruvananthapuram King Marthanda Varma and started reigning as ‘Padmanabha Dasa’, the servant and representative of Lord Padmanabha--perhaps a nobler variant of the ‘Divine Right Theory’ that the West is familiar with . The vast temple complex, with its tall ‘Gopuram’ decorated with detailed carvings reflected in the huge temple tank, is today a centre of attraction for the pious, the tourist and the merely curious. Thiruvananthapuram, built on seven hills, has today grown Hillsinto a sprawling metropolis; but thankfully the city still retains her past glory and charm, and in spite of the frenetic pace of modern life, perhaps it is the most sedate of the big cities of the State. The people too have retained their friendliness and hospitality, and communicating in English, Hindi or Tamil is as easy as it is in the native Malayalam, whether one is talking to a retired professor or to the man in the street. But be prepared for a ‘dose’ of highly individualistic observations though-- a hallmark of Page 54

the Malayali that has enabled him to adapt and to survive the Tsunamis of alien cultures and ideas, and all things ‘modern’. The old quarter East Fortof the city clusters in and around the East Fort, a protected landmark that dates back to the Royal days. The rightly famous Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple , the Navarathri Mandapam, where the annual musical fest is held as an offering to Saraswati, the Goddess of Learning , Kuthira Malika, a uniquely wonderful example of traditional architecture and the venue of the annual Swathi Thirunal music festival honouring the composer-king of Travancore are the best among the traditional structures that adorn the Fort enclave. The Mahatma Gandhi Road, the chief artery of the city, is lined by traditional mansions that proclaim the grandeur of the times past and modern high-rises that testify to the city’s newfound affluence and a brashly commercial taste --red tile and timber vying with concrete and glass. What perhaps is special about the ambience of Thiruvananthapuram is the wonderful blend of the strongly traditional, the nostalgically Colonial and the outright modern elements, be it in architecture, in food or in the dress and manners of her people. The city’s spirit of ‘live and let live’ is nowhere more evident than at Palayam (the Garrison, the seat of the old Cantonment), where three Connemara Marketcentres of worships of three faiths rub shoulders-the ancient Ganapathy Temple (ostensibly built by the Maharajah for the prosperity of the Connemara Market nearby), the Palayam Muslim Mosque (get the correct name) and the Palayam Christian Cathedral (get the correct name) church with its distinctive Gothic tower. Blessed with a pleasant climate virtually throughout the year, Thiruvananthapuram city sparkles after the monsoon rains.Monsoon Rains After the ‘hot’ summers, which thankfully pale in comparison to the ‘hotspots’ of India, the welcome summer showers augur the festival season when Kerala decks herself out, and traditional colours and rhythms and characters straight from the pages of her ancient lore entice the visitor to another world. The festivities are crowned by Onam , the Spring harvest festival, today marked by traditional fare throughout the State, KADHAKALIincluding the spirited race of the picturesque and majestic snake boats , the grand elephant parade, when hordes of caparisoned pachyderms lend an air of fantasy to the setting, and the special presentations of Kathakali , Mohiniyattom , Koodiyattom and other traditional arts of Kerala.
