A Class Apart
Hotelier extraordinaire The first 5-star property of the Ramee Group of Hotels, Ramee Grand Hotel and Spa is set to celebrate its first anniversary this month.
16
OCTOBER 2014
A Class Apart Group General Manager of Ramee group of Hotels, distinguished gentleman Shantharam Shetty, is the main man working behind the scenes to ensure the success of the hotels in Bahrain and the region. Sabaya caught up with him to speak to him about the success of the 5-star property, the group’s future plans for Bahrain’s market and his experience in the hospitality sector. Briefly tell me about your journey with Ramee Group so far? I graduated in economics and then ventured into a career of sales and marketing nearly 25 years ago. I started off in Dubai and then moved to Bahrain in 1996 to set up Ramee’s first operational property in Bahrain. We eventually started with 3-star hotels and have now moved up to 5-stars. At the moment in the portfolio we have about three 3-star hotels, six 4-star hotels, 3 furnished apartment blocks and Ramee Grand Hotel and Spa is our first 5-star hotel. What brought about your interest in the hospitality segment? It’s something that runs in the family. We were into restaurants and the hospitality sector from the beginning. Making people happy and serving them makes me happy and that is why I like interacting with my guests and understanding their needs. My colleagues sometimes find it strange when I stand in the lobby and speak to guests about their visit to the hotel. I just like making sure that they’re happy with the hotel services. How was the shift like moving from 4-star to 5-star properties? What sort of a learning curve was it? It’s a completely different segment and there are a lot of changes that you need to adapt to during the shift. We had to renew our entire outlook with the target client segment and services. The initial six months were challenging while making the move to the 5-star culture. With the support from the ministries, guests, our associates, suppliers and the media, we were able to establish the hotel successfully. What future plans does Ramee group have for Bahrain? From here onwards, we’ll be focusing more
on the high-end market with shifting the emphasis to 5-star properties while still assessing our options with 4-star hotels as well. We are also planning to upgrade two of our properties in Juffair to 5-star as we have sufficient land to do so. In UAE, We have a 5-star coming up in Dubai and another one in Abu Dhabi. What defines the success of Ramee Group in Bahrain? I think it solely depends on one-to-one interaction and committing understanding guests’ requirements and implementing amends to suit their needs. That has made us successful. What do you think about the scope for hotels in Bahrain? Every market has ups and downs with
constant changes and we need to adapt ourselves to these changes to mark to attain success. There is definitely a great potential here for quality products and a lot of international brands are being established here so it is fairly feasible. The scope is ever growing. What advice would you give to budding hospitality entrepreneurs? Always set long-term goals. Be dedicated and committed to creating a strong brand. Everyone knows you are a workaholic. What do you do to relax after work? I keep half an hour for yoga every morning. And then I go to the gym in the afternoon so that helps take the stress away. I keep Friday for me and the family to unwind from the week’s stress.

Talented rapper Flipperchi became the first Bahraini hip-hop artist to bring out an album and have it sold commercially. His album, titled ‘Straight Out Of Two Seas’ has several collaborations with local as well as international musicians. He tells us more about his journey with music, aspirations and more in a candid interview with Sabaya Magazine. 18
OCTOBER 2014
Art-Spect Tell me about yourself. I go by the name of Flipperachi. My real name is Hussam Mohamed Aseem, I’m 27 years old, and I have a Business Management degree. I love basketball and hip-hop! Rapping was a hobby at first until I got signed to Outlaw Productions. I love movies, particularly comedy, action, and science fiction. How did you develop an interest in hip hop? Which artists were you influenced by? To be honest I was first into Arabic songs and then I switched to rap music because it allowed for self-expression. I was influenced by artists like 2pac, Eminem, Bone Thugs-NHarmony, Xzibit, Dr.Dre, Icecube, & Busta Rhymes. They influenced me in a way that got me understanding hip hop music and what it’s all about. In your latest album ‘Straight out of 2 seas’ you have collaborated with international artists. How did you go about doing so? I had collaboration with Kuwaiti artist Daffy, whom we’ve known for a long time. Mc Skillz from the U.S came down to Bahrain for a show, and after we spoke, the idea of a collaboration popped up. Ayzee from Saudi Arabia is a friend of ours, and he liked the track “Dear Allah.” Rampage of the Busta Rhymes Flipmode Squad liked our project and jumped on it. It was the interest of these
artists in the project that got us collaborating. What was the most challenging aspect of recording the album? We faced a few different challenges. One of them had to be careful with the content of the album, as we needed to make sure it wasn’t going to be offensive to anyone, and we also had to make it acceptable to a culture in which rap music is relatively new. Another challenge was that we had day jobs, so time wasn’t completely at our disposal. It took three years for it to be completed! What do you think of the music scene in Bahrain? The scene is developing slowly, and there’s plenty of talent in Bahrain. People are beginning to support local talent more and more, and artists are starting to put themselves out there. There still isn’t an industry, and it’s not taken very seriously yet, which is why many artists don’t continue to develop themselves and step up their game. It definitely needs time. Being the only Bahraini rapper to have sold an album commercially how was the response from fans and supporters? First of all, I am proud to be the first to do so, even if I don’t sell a large number of copies! To be known as a Bahraini artist that has an album sold in Virgin Megastore is a huge
deal for me. I’ve been seeing the support of people from the start, and they’ve grown in number, which is a great thing to see. The feedback has been incredible, and people have loving the album! Who or what do you draw inspiration from? Even though I am not a musician, I love musical instruments, and I draw a lot of my inspiration from different music. Another inspiration to me is nature. I love greenery and natural sites. What message do you have for aspiring musicians who want to become big in the industry? First things first: get out of your bedrooms and do something about it! Staying there and complaining about not being successful is not going to get you anywhere. Stay motivated, always think positively, and work hard. Hard work always beats talent, and if u develop both then you’re surely going to reach somewhere. If you’re a rapper, stay away from disses! They won’t do you any good. What is the next move in your career? I’m starting to work on my next album, recording singles, shooting videos, and planning to do more shows.

Success Story
P
roducing exquisite luxurious caftans and evening gowns that mix the Moroccan and Khaleeji heritage, they believe in incorporating traditional handwork to emphasize attention to detail. Having received great acclaim for stunning intricacies of each piece, the brand has been sought after celebrities and royalty in Bahrain and the rest of the Arab world. This gave the brand its credibility and much deserved appreciation internationally. Showcasing their brand at Harrods in London as well as the rest of the GCC, the future looks promising for Dar Naseem Alandalous. They are currently working on designing pieces for a fashion show at the Eiffel Tower in Paris at the end of October. The name of the brand translates to ‘Breeze from Andalusia.’ The word ‘Dar’ was added to signify the exquisite haute couture aspect of the brand. Haya and Nabila put down their threads and embroidery to talk to Sabaya magazine about the brand. Tell me more about the brand? My mother hails from Morocco and she decided to start her own fashion line when I was in my teenage years. She had the designing bug in her ever since I can remember, and she opened a small boutique selling Moroccan Kaftans at the time after being encouraged by her family and friends. She wasn’t focusing on designing at the time. In 2010, we started designing our own pieces and things took off from there. We started selling our line outside Bahrain and participated in exhibitions, thus expanding our clientele. By 2012, we branched out with an haute couture collection. My mother handles design, and I handle the creative side of things. How did you manage to expand and showcase internationally? We did it gradually, starting with UAE, GCC and then Europe. Each collection was carefully planned and slightly bigger than the previous one, thus gaining us recognition with shows outside of Bahrain. What is the theme for these collections? We get inspired by fabrics and the initial collections were based on the fusion between Moroccan and Khaleeji design. There was no certain theme; it was all about the artistic flow and revolved around vintage Moroccan royalty. This year, the collection is inspired by the Majorelle garden in Marrakech. How was the response from international clientele? It was a very risky move but very well
Haya and Nabila
received, especially the first show at Harrods in London. Our pieces were more ethnic but everyone really liked the elegance, rich embroidery and the element of modesty with the collection.
What are your future aspirations for the brand? We are planning to branch out and create ready-to-wear pieces to be sold commercially. Our pieces are very exclusive and it’s kind of affecting our growth. We get a lot of offers prompting us to sell the collection but we are quite attached to our pieces. We also like to have a friendly rapport with our clients. I’m going to be starting my own contemporary wear clothing line which is going to be more fresh and youthful with a hint of Middle Eastern influences. What according to you is the most challenging aspect of being in the fashion industry? Working with really high quality materials and put painstaking effort into making the garment, we have a certain price and not everyone accepts that. What do you think of the fashion scene in Bahrain? The problem is that the fashion scene is still in its teething stages now. For budding designers, it is not just a matter of graduating with a degree in fashion designing, practical experience is just as necessary. This is where the market in Bahrain needs further development. There are so many aspiring designers with great ideas but there isn’t much support when it comes to starting up a business for the same. Opting for yet another Reem Acra gown, this striking purple hue looks breath-taking against her pale skin and dark tresses. The gown makes a seductive, yet romantic, impression from the embroidered lace on sheer tulle. With a gown that’s already eye-catching, she enhanced the look further with amethyst stone earrings and a rich red lip, which plumps up that gorgeous pout.would expect, she looks like an absolute goddess!

Elizabeth Banks
Elizabeth Banks wore a blue floral Chloé Resort 2015 suit with a cropped American Apparel top, black Jimmy Choo pumps, a black marbled Jimmy Choo clutch and jewelry from Vita Fede & Dana Rebecca Designs. This is definitely what we call ‘a lot of look’, but Elizabeth pulls it off flawlessly. I love how well she carries the bold print, and the midriff-baring top is a much better choice to wear under the suit than the voluminous blouse seen on the runway. A messy faux-bob, light pink lips and kohlrimmed eyes highlighted with blue eyeshadow complete the fun and funky red carpet look.
Ashley Greene
I was bowled over by the dramatic nature of her Antonio Berardi Fall 2014 gown, mostly because the actress didn’t play it safe, but also I love how the black woven detailing adds a graphic punch to her organza gown. Sweeping wavy locks and a striking contrasting red lip top off the regality of the look. I wouldn’t change a thing.

Felicity Jones
The actress wore a black fit and flare dress with a red and silver beaded mesh overlay from the Armani Privé Fall 2014 collection. This is such a flirty and fresh look, and Felicity seems to radiate the joy of the dress. I’m a little let down by the shoes, however–they feel a bit underwhelming with the dress– perhaps a higher heel would make me like them more? A bright red lip, thick lashes, side swept bangs and a modern take on the classic beehive complete the girly look.
Zhou Dongyu
The actress selected a white crepe, half-sleeve crop top, embroidered with Swarovski crystals and flower-shaped sequins, paired over a yellow organza and tulle skirt from Georges Hobeika’s Spring 2014 Couture collection. The look was all about the fantasy—and I loved the dazzling, on-trend crop top matched to the ethereal, pastel flurry of shimmering tulle, which she highlighted further with a pretty-in-pink lip lacquer and delicate diamond jewels. Even the little clutch made me smile, what with its painted hand with redlacquered nails. This was a fashion fairytale. What say you?

ahrain Jewellery Centre, the exclusive dealers for Hublot in the Kingdom of Bahrain, opened the first Hublot timepiece boutique in Moda Mall, offering its most eminent collections to brand enthusiasts such the Classic and the Big Bang. Founded by Carlo Crocco in 1980, Hublot made waves by combining precious metal gold with natural rubber the first time in the history of watch making. The portholeshaped with its combination of gold and a minimalist black dial became the symbol of the watch brand, thus giving birth to the ‘fusion’ concept. This has turned into the inspiration of lots of watch makers and it has become absolutely famous worldwide. A scion of the Italian Binda Group dynasty, best known for making Breil watches, Carlo Crocco left the company in 1976 to strike out on his own and create a new watch company. It took 3 years of research to create the strap. Despite failing to attract a single potential customer on the first day of its debut at the 1980 Basel Watch Fair, the watch quickly proved to be a commercial success with sales

It was a few years later that Hublot entered the exclusive and elitist circle of great Swiss making watches brands. Hublot began what was the last independent family watch making business, a family firm by essence, following a monoproduct concept, always maintaining its independence an awesome personality. Cozily glamorous Michael Kors Resort 2015 collection
32
OCTOBER 2014
T
ry as hard as one might, it’s almost impossible to think of a moment in life that Michael Kors doesn’t have the right look for in his resort offerings, inspired by what he called “tomboy romance.” Want something cozily glamorous to clink-clink in the New Year in Aspen or St. Moritz? Try his pastel ombré mohair-and-silk sweater and scarf over a ravishingly pretty wisteria floral chiffon ruffled skirt on for size, or the rocking black crushed-satin fox-lined anorakcum-cape, one of several hyphenated “Is it a cape? Is it a trench?” coat styles in this collection. Basking instead in the balmy heat of some tropical idyll as 2015 dawns? Yep, Kors has that covered, too, what with his white crepe peasant blouse and white cotton crumpled shorts, or a gorgeous little white organza floral dress. (Alert, beach brides!) The foxy—quite literally—coat could be an insanely glam way to combat the cold when you’re shoveling snow off the drive in Winnetka one freezing January morning, while those lightweight easy-breezy pieces could be flip-flopping, as Kors mentioned at his presentation, when you’re “throwing a lamb chop into the cart at the supermarket in Malibu.” Kors went on, “You see them! In bikinis and boots! You’re thinking, Where is she going in that, but who cares?! She looks amazing!” And that, in essence, underscores the immense charm of so much of what was on offer here: Practicality and wearablity infused with a huge dose of fabulosity, and vice versa. It’s a world where crocodile Wellington boots, khaki pants, poetic 1970s pleated chiffon blouses, and Baja hoodies all coexist perfectly together.

Our makeover winner Maha Al Zaidy was picked as last month’s winner. She was treated to a dazzling hair and a more natural beauty makeover by makeover specialist Natalie Semaan. On receiving her makeover, Maha said: “I am very happy and so excited. It’s the first time I won something from entering a competition and Natalie’s expertise was really handy!” Our makeover specialist Natalie said:
“I am a firm believer of the ‘look good, feel good’ theory. Looking good isn’t just about the outer appearance, it should come from within. For Maha, I decided to give her a smoky look to bring out her features. I was constricted in terms of the hair so not much was changed except the hair colour, where we toned it down to a colour that would suit her features. I gave her tips about the ‘look good,
feel good’ theory as well. I am always excited, and eagerly wait to meet the makeover winners every month. As soon as I see their picture, I start discussing the look with them but the real work comes in once I get to know them personally, so I can give them a look that matches their personality as well as physical appearance. I do everything that suits their features, giving them the best, natural option.”

Think Pink Bahrain takes a new approach to increasing awareness about breast cancer prevention
I
n a bid to further bolster their pledge to raise awareness about breast cancer prevention, Think Pink Bahrain is undertaking an innovative approach for the latest campaign in what is believed the first for the region by targeting men. Since their inception in 2004 Think Pink Bahrain has been faced with the continuing challenge of how to raise awareness and encourage more women to partake in preventative measures. “A man with a partner, wife or mother can also play a big part in the fight against breast cancer. We aim to reach out to these men to encourage them to join with the respective women in the lives, so that cancer prevention can be tackled together, not just in isolation.” said Think Pink Bahrain’s Founder Ms Julie Sprakel To that end, Think Pink Bahrain’s core communication activities are focused on asking men to “join hands with loved ones to encourage women to undergo monthly check ups and self- examinations”. Ms Sprakel added “The key message we’d like men to take away is that we’re asking them to support the women in their lives with gentle encouragement about self checking, because ultimately early prevention is the key to saving lives.” To get this important message across, Think Pink Bahrain’s communication collateral clearly shows two hands – a man and a woman – joining as one, highlighting the core message behind the campaign. “Based on the research we did, we’re confident this message will resonate with the men of Bahrain. Men want what is best for the women in their lives – their mothers, partners, sisters and wives. If women feel encouraged, they’ll do what’s best for their health and take part in an icheck. To date, the message is being well-received, and it’s great to see Bahrain once again pioneering new ideas and taking the lead on these important health issues.” noted Ms Sprakel. Advertising agency LOWE MENA, who has proudly supported this cause for several years, is once again donating resources to help get the Think Pink Bahrain message out to as many people as possible.

We visited Hua Hin, a popular seaside resort and mainland Bangkok while visiting the best of the hotels they city has to offer. Thailand has easy going visa procedures, with many nationalities being able to receive a visa on arrival or exempted from visas altogether. Bahrainis nationals are among those who do not need a Thai visa to visit the country. After a fairly quick round up with the

Prasong explained that Suvarnabhumi translates to ‘Land of Gold.’ Cute thatched roofs in all colours of the rainbow peeked beneath lush greenery on both sides of the highway. We also

The beach front at Dusit Thani seems endless, where the water and sky seem to merge at a distance. We headed to the InterContinental Hua Hin for a quick hotel inspection followed by dinner at their outdoor seafood restaurant. The charms of Hua Hin, Thailand›s classic royal retreat, greets you in every experience at the Hua Hin Resort, where you can enjoy one of the most beautiful beach sides. We were greeted by the hotel PR Teresa, who took us on a tour of the hotel. Amidst architecture inspired by His Majesty King Rama VI›s Summer Palace are luxurious rooms, suites, oceanfront pool villas and the renowned La Residence, a two-story colonial residence beachfront and various restaurants. The poolside is breath-taking, 55-square meter infinity-edge pool, complete with a fiber-optic system to create a twinkling starlight effect at night. The chef at the restaurant explained that all the seafood is caught on their premises. He also explained that the little green-lit boats in the sea were squid catcher boats. We had a massive plate of prawns, fish, squid and oysters cooked in the most delectable manner. After bidding farewell to Teresa, we were taken to Hua Hin’s famed night market for some shopping. Vendors sell everything from souvenirs and accessories to handmade goods. What a great start to the trip!

Day 2 – Hua Hin (Chiva Som, Plearnwan, Cicada market) After a hearty breakfast at Dusit Thani, everyone was back in the van to be taken to Chiva Som, a holistic retreat. After a tour of Chiva Som and a lunch at their restaurant, Nuch explained that we would be visiting a famous vintage village market called Plearnwan, reminiscent of Hua Hin’s olden days. Words are not enough to describe the place. As you enter, it feels like you are stepping into a time warp with stylised versions of the 1950s fashioned shophouses which once occupied by Thai-Chinese districts of Bangkok and Hua Hin. Old fashioned souvenir shops, clothes and candy stores dot the place. Another astounding aspect of this market is a vintage themed hotel named Piman Plearnwan. The hotel is made to look like a place straight out of an old movie, with beds, bathrooms and décor resembling the 1950s. In the evening, we headed to a local restaurant with a beach view and probably the best Thai food I’ve ever tried. A famous beverage in Thailand is Lemongrass tea and sherbet, a fragrant concoction of the herb, which is served as a welcome drink in almost all hotels and spas. Our last stop for the day was Cicada market, a local weekend crafts market that supports budding artisans and craftsmen. It is much bigger than the night market and here you can find unique items that are usually made by the artists in Hua Hin, along with plenty of entertainment and
Day 3 – Bangkok (Siam Kempinski Bangkok, Banyan Tree Bangkok, Apsara Cruise experience) We checked out of Dusit Thani, and headed to Bangkok, where we would be staying for the next 3 days. An animated conversation about the shopping malls and the great bargaining kept us busy during the drive to the mainland. We were staying at the 6-star property of the Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok. The grandeur of the hotel is eminent, a European flair meshed with Thai hospitality. Located in the heart of posh shopping and entertainment district of Siam Square, the hotel has 303 rooms and suites. Unique to the hotel is the Garden Suite, eleven Duplex Suites, and ten Cabana Rooms. All these rooms grant guests direct access to the garden, and are only a couple of steps from the private terraces and the swimming pools. The Terrace Suite on the rooftop on the Garden Wing features a vast private garden with Jacuzzi. Part of the hotel’s design is an extensive collection of Thai art, which blends harmoniously into the overall architecture and design of the property, with over 4,000 pieces of art. Various restaurants and bars are located within the hotel. The hotel is adjoined to a high end mall titled the Siam Paragon and a short walk from the BTS skytrain station. Keep in mind that it is cheaper and easier to travel by the skytrain than taxis and tuk-tuks. Later that evening we headed to the Banyan Tree Hotel, which takes luxury to the stratosphere. Consisting of 327 rooms and 61 stories, it boasts of spectacular views and a rooftop restaurant titled Vertigo and the Moon Bar. The whole city of Bangkok lies beneath you as you step into the rooftop, giving the unusual impression of being aboard a spaceship in the sky with a 360 degree view. We then headed for a cruise on the Chao Phraya River. Apsara cruises are hosted by the Banyan Tree and is a vintage-style rice barge. Onboard the noble teak wood vessel, guests indulge in selections of Royal Thai cuisine and canapés with excellent service. The cruise passes by theTemple of Dawn (Wat Arun Ratchawararam) and the Royal Palace among other sights. Day 4 – Bangkok (Vitallife Wellness Center at Bumrungrad Hospital, Rarin Jinda Spa, Dusit Thani Bangkok) Day 4 was our last day of full-fledged activities. First stop – Vitallife Centreat the world-renowned Bumrungrad Hospital, where our body mass indexes were analyse
and we were given a tour of the facilities of the centre. A sumptuous lunch at Na Aroon, a vegetarian restaurant serving superb Thai food in an authentic Thai setting awaited us next. A opulent spa retreat at the Rarin Jinda Spa took away all the stress from my body and I was ready for the reception at Dusit Thani Bangkok, where the executive director of the Thai Tourism Authority was hosting a reception. Dusit Thani Bangkok is synonymous with quintessential Thai hospitality, offering a hedonistic experience in Bangkok. After a vote of thanks from the executive director, we headed to back to our hotel, starry-eyed with the memories of the trip.

Techno Talk Apple Watch review
Apple finally attacks the wrist Most of us expected the Apple Watch to appear in 2015, but it›s made a (semi) surprise launch with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. It sadly won›t be seen until next year though, which means this is a deliberate ploy by Apple to make sure you›re not buying a Samsung, LG or Moto 360 option in the run up to Christmas. It›s rounded, which works in its favour, and the curved back makes it feel nice, if a little heavy (depending on the band) on the wrist. The interface is curious, but I really think Apple has done better than most with the way it›s approached interacting with a wristdwelling device. The Digital Crown is essentially a scroll wheel that lets you zoom in and out of the interface, so for apps (with a fun new home screen that looks NOTHING like the iPhone›s version) The Apple Watch is neither a fitness band, watch or fashion accessory though, despite taking a bit from each of those camps. It›s hard to define what it really is, which means
that users may struggle to justify the purchase. I think its greatest chance of success is in the health market, as Apple has made this a decent choice for people looking to get a little bit healthier. Not just checking steps or heart rate once in a while, the watch will be able to help you be a bit less sedentary as well as noting when you run around and how hard the exertion is.
Early verdict
The Apple Watch is a device that many will want to own with the iPhone 6, as the stylings match really well, and let›s be honest: people like buying wholeheartedly into the Apple ecosystem. It›s annoying we don›t know the price or the exact release date then, as it›s hard to say how successful the Apple Watch will be as a result. One thing›s for sure – now Apple has brought visibility of wearables to the wider market through the Apple Watch, everyone will benefit through higher consumer traction. Will we see everyone wearing one? Probably not, but then again not everyone owned an iPad or iPhone at the start. This is phase one of a much longer product game – but the Apple Watch One is a quite good start.
Techno Logic Latest Gadgets and what you will love about them! iPhone 6 review
Now THIS is what we’ve been waiting for The iPhone has never been one of the most powerful handsets in the world, nor the smallest / largest, and yet seven years later it has retained (and grown) it’s unshakeable following. However, in the last 18 months, the death knells have started quietly sounding, ringing in the distance as the best Android phones – once only a rival on spec or price – became genuine challengers and then out-and-out better handsets. The processor is obviously uprated, the camera quicker and more capable than ever before, and the battery has been enlarged significantly to quell the disquiet at the power use of previous models. But there›s so much more here that represents a seismic shift for Apple: the increased resolution on the screen is really helpful (and badly needed) and the payments mechanism, while limited to the US only at the moment, will be the boost that the smartphone payment industry needed. In terms of the performance advantage Apple has given itself, the new A8 44
OCTOBER 2014
processor certainly seems up to the task. While (as usual) we›ve not heard much in the way of specs for it, save to say it›s the same 64-bit architecture that Apple added into the mix last year.
Early verdict
The iPhone 6 is a really rather good handset indeed and in the pantheon of Apple handsets the iPhone 6 will go down as a pivotal moment. The new payment mechanisms, the increased screen and battery size and the overhauled design come from a phone that is finally following, at least partly, the path laid out by the competition rather than steadfastly refusing to acknowledge that consumers are looking for something else. It will still command the same eyewatering price tag as before, but this time it certainly warrants it – if you›re after a new phone and are toying with leaving Apple›s ecosystem, don›t. This is very likely the phone for you, offering all the simplicity and power of iOS combined with hardware that rivals some of the best the Android army has to offer.
Techno Talk Samsung Galaxy Note 4 review
Is the new Note note perfect? The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 comes with the samesized 5.7-inch screen as the Note 3, with Samsung instead deciding to improve on the quality of the screen rather than its size. The screen now boasts Quad HD Super AMOLED (2,560 x 1,440 resolution) technology that stretches to 500 pixels per inch. Couple this with what Samsung is calling an adaptive display - one that changes depending on the light of the place you are viewing the screen - and on paper you have the optimum viewing no matter what situation you are in. It›s obvious but the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 does come equipped with some of the features that we saw on the S5. The most notable is the heartrate monitor on the back (which also has a neat camera functionality I will explain shortly) and the back has been improved somewhat too, but is still a little too faux leather for my liking. One other big improvement is with the camera. When it comes to megapixels it›s gone from 13MP to 16MP but the innovations don›t lie in the meaningless megapixel chase but also in the front camera›s f stop, which now clocks in at f1.9. In
old money that means that the camera now lets in 60% more light and makes for better quality images.
Early verdict
It is big and it is clever: the Galaxy Note 4 looks to be Samsung›s best Note yet, toning down the gimmick and adding real innovation to what is becoming one of the best phone ranges around. The biggest relief is that the software changes are innovations rather than annoying bloatware. Samsung does have a habit of adding gimmickry to its handsets but the big changes here are actually beneficial to how you use the Note.
LG 34UM95 review
The first Thunderbolt 2-equipped 21:9 display is a cinematic sight to behold LG 34UM95, which goes by the mantra of bigger is better - both in terms of physical size and resolution - which have been upped to 34 inches and 3440 x 1440 (21:9) respectively. This larger working area is the equivalent of running two 20-inch monitors side-by-side with resolutions of 1720x1440 (6:5). Finally, 21:9 gets the vertical space that was sorely lacking from previous models, matching what you would find on a 27-inch monitor while providing even more horizontal space at the sides. The UM3495›s working area really is huge. At 109ppi, it also has an advantage over 4K in that, despite not being as sharp, on-screen text and UI elements are perfectly readable without having to adjust your operating system›s scaling settings. The 34UM95 is very elegantly designed and one of the most eye-catching 21:9 monitors yet. Although it›s taller and wider than previous 21:9 monitors, it›s still surprising at how short it is. The display is an IPS variety with 1.07 billion colours, brightness of 1000:1 and excellent 178-degree viewing angles. It has rich colours that «pop» and produces deep blacks. Tested with our colour calibrator, the 34UM95 covered 100% of the sRGB channel, making it a highly accurate offering out of the box. Final verdict The LG34UM95 is an expensive 21:9 monitor, but it pulls out of all of the stops to justify the cost. The basics are done well: from its high
colour accuracy to intuitive menu controls. Throw in a wide range of ports and fast response times wrapped up in an eye-catching design, and it offering becomes the 34-inch 21:9 offering to beat. If you prefer the idea of a single monitor to replace your multi-monitor setup, the 34UM95 is an excellent, no-holds-barred option. OCTOBER 2014

AUDI A5 SPORTBACK
EFFORTLESS PERFORMANCE & IMPRESSIVE REFINEMENT
By Fayez Abubacker
INTRODUCTION The Audi A5 Sport-back is a practical and stylish executive saloon that›s also the most user-friendly model in the A5 range. It joins the A5 coupe and cabriolet editions, but adds the flexible appeal of four doors and a spacious boot, which is accessed through a large hatchback that is easy to load. Audi claims that the A5 Sport-back is “unique, with no direct competitors...blending coupe style with saloon practicality...a contemporary embodiment of the Grand Turismo philosophy”. 46
OCTOBER 2014
Auto Review seats and dashboard feeling very robust and securely screwed together which makes you feel safe. All models come fitted with front and side airbags and electronic stability control as standard, but the list of safetybased options is extensive, including the likes of blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking and drowsiness monitors are available.
6. EQUIPMENTS
OUR 6 POINT REVIEW 1. EXTERIOR
The styling is flawlessly handsome, a more practical outcome of the “four-door coupe” trend, since Audi went for a lift-back bodystyle. With more aggressive LED-lined headlights, frameless doors and fancier 19-inch wheels in addition to an “S-Line” kit, the A5 Sport-back looks decidedly ready for business. The A5 marks a departure for Audi, whose usual designs reflect constant radius curves and unambiguous design. Mixing straight lines, swathing curves and concave surfaces, viewed close up, the individual details can appear cluttered, but from a distance and especially on the move, it gels cohesively.
2. INTERIOR
Our Nappa-leathered car also came with sportier front seats, well-bolstered and power-adjustable, while the rear bench can be split-folded to boost the already-generous 480 litres boot space under that heavy tailgate. The boot opening is wide and easy to load items through, while the shape of the boot also makes it easy to store large bulky objects. Legroom and headroom, both are pretty decent too, at least for average-sized passengers. The interior quality is very impressive trademark Audi, with clean lines, nice textures, soft touch plastics, choice of aluminium, wood or Piano Black trim pieces and red backlit buttons.
that used to power the S-badged Audis. But it’s hardly shy and retiring at full chat, either, and there are clear fuel economy and emissions advantages. We timed our freshengined car at 6.5 seconds, while consuming 12 litres/100 km of fuel, both impressive figures, especially considering that this compact car weighs in at a hefty 1790 kg.
4. RIDE & HANDLING
The first pothole you take is enough to show that there’s been something of a revelation in Audi’s ride department. The long wheelbase and improved weight distribution gives it an impressive secondary ride quality. The second discovery is the agility where the A5 is very eager to change direction. It points into corners well, clings on with strong tyre grip while maintaining its body control and resisting roll admirably well, then allows early and hard throttle on corner exit thanks to the all-wheel-drive system. The steering, while always very accurate, can feel artificially heavy and does lack some feedback, which detracts from the overall driving experience and makes it less engaging.
5. SAFETY
The build quality of the Sport-back is a first-rate especially on the inside, with the
S line trim brings extra sporty trim with larger 19 inch alloy wheels and the best of leather seats. An LCD screen with a rotarydial controller forms the basis of the allencompassing “MMI” multimedia system which integrates the navigation, strong CD/ MP3 stereo and Bluetooth phone. Standard three-zone climate control also allows backseat passengers to be individually warmed or cooled. Further features included auto up-down power windows, sunroof, smart keyless entry and start, parking sensors with camera, electronic parking brake, HID headlights with LED running lamps and fog-lamps.
VERDICT
Audis are generally desirable, reliable and offer impressive build quality for your money. They’re not cheap, but no premium cars are. All the expected Audi virtues are still present – lovely textures and inlays, comfortable seats, a slinky thin-rimmed steering wheel, and terrific ergonomics. A5 is an exceptionally competent and beautifully finished car. Most potential owners are looking specifically for the kind of drama-free speed in all sorts of road conditions, which is something that only an all-wheel-drive vehicle such as the A5 can provide. With a little more dynamic polish, the A5 Sportback would be a near-perfect proposition.

Did you ever imagine a relaxing weekend in the middle of Manama city and minutes away from the bustling Seef district? Well, here is where you should go: InterContinental Regency Bahrain. Hotel Exterior

s you approach the hotel’s site, you sense the warmth of the old city lying to the side of the premises with all its clamour, originality, and noisy hustle. The Souq, the street vendors, and the traditional gold city are at the reach of your hands from one side; and the modern shopping malls at the other. The authenticity of the establishment is obvious despite the business environment. An aura of grandeur envelops the lobby, emanating the grandeur of the hotel the minute you set foot in. I was welcomed by friendly and knowledgeable staff and, no surprise, with fine Arabic coffee and premium dates. Between the original edifice and the annex, the premises offers a total of 321 rooms including 31 suites, a Health & Fitness Center including a temperature controlled athletic pool, a spa that will melt away every OCTOBER 2014

pressure, and six food & beverage outlets. There are also two club floors for the discerning traveller, offering guests the pinnacle of luxury with an element of privacy. The Club Lounge offers guests light meals throughout the day along with stunning views of the city and coastline. After a super quick check in, I head up to explore my spacious room with a large LCD screen, CD player, DVD player, a work desk, a mini bar amenity, a calming view over the poolside, and a sizeable bathroom. But I couldn’t wait long before I put on the beach look and unwind at Elements Pool & Lounge to start my unique journey of relaxation. With a massive poolside and bar, lounging chairs and beds situated close to the water, Elements is no short of magnificent, possibly among the prettiest pool sides in Bahrain. You can choose to sit indoors or outdoors. As night falls, little LED lights dot the pool floor like stars, making it appear truly magical.
Hotel Review Elements pool side With executive floors and suites, private limousines, a business centre staffed between 9am to 12pm, courier service, premium internet service, and every business requirement there met with. Restaurant Review
W
aves is the ultimate destnation for every seafood fanatic. The restaurant looks like it’s straight out of an underwater fairy tale, with a soothing blue and tan décor. Majestic seahorse shaped marble structures seem like they are welcoming guests onto the larger seating section and huge carved marble seashell adorn the walls. Even the overhead lumination is in the shape of a star fish. Different types of sea creatures are placed on ice on a table, resembling a marketplace. The restaurant manager, Sayed, explained that all the seafood is brought in fresh on a daily basis and some varieties of lobster are imported from Holland on a weekly basis. He also suggested that we try the Business Lunch along with a few more dishes. The business lunch comprises of a starter, main course and dessert, where you can choose between two options each. We decided trust the Crowne Plaza’s very own Bahraini chef Jaffar and let him suggest options for the meal. For starters, we had salad and a variety of soups. The salad comprised of deep fried pieces of calamari, rocket leaves, cherry tomatoes and avocado, drizzled in a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Light and refreshing, it was an ideal starter. Spoilt for choice, three different soups were brought to the table - Seafood soup with vegetables and chili oil, Tom Yum Goong soup and the chef’s signature Laksa soup. What a way to whet the palate! Tom Yum Goon is a Thai sour & spicy
prawn and squid soup infused with lemon grass and lime leaf, an oriental favourite with great fragrance and flavour. The Laksa soup had an assortment of seafood in a mildly spicy coconut soup, rice noodles, chili oil, vegetables making it a wonderful choice to start the meal with. Another fascinating feature of the décor is the cylindrical shaped aquariums suspended in the middle of a pillar, dotted with happily swimming fish. For main course, it was a seafood fiesta! Pan seared hammour fillet with roasted potato, grilled eggplant and herbs butter sauce was incredibly delicious, with a meltin-the-mouth consistency. A more oriental sherry fillet with vegetables in Thai green coconut curry along served with jasmine rice was next. Bursting with rich flavour, it is a great choice if you like Thai food. Next was Samkeeh Harra, pan fried hammour fillet served with chili tomato sauce. The chili tomato sauce was definitely a winner, and the entire victual vanished from the plate in five minutes! Another eminent Waves favourite is the Seafood lovers’ platter, which has a selection of succulent crayfish, salmon, squid, shrimps and mussels, grilled to perfection and served with mixed vegetables. Another noticeable feature is the impeccable presentation for each dish. Everything about this platter is screams delectable! If you can’t decide what to eat and want it all, this is made for you. The value is also excellent. The chef has warned us to keep space for dessert but I got carried away after being tempted with all the delicious food. What was brought to the table next made me reconsider my appetite capacity. Ginger cardamom crème brulee with orange zest was a creamy haven of lush custard, and nothing tops a plate of fresh fruits to end a good meal. Waves is open for lunch and dinner, and should be on your bucket list of places to eat at if you enjoy seafood.
