Nicole Kidman receives 2015 Barfta ‘Worst Actress’ award
Nicole Kidman has won the award for ‘Worst Actress’ 2015 for ‘Grace Of Monaco’ at British Academy for Rubbish Films and Terrible Acting (Barfta). ‘Grace of Monaco’ was about the American actress Grace Kelly’s marriage to Prince Rainier III, and it was neither liked by audience nor by the critics last year after its release, the Independent reported. ‘Pudsey the Dog: the Movie’ received the ‘Worst British Film’ and was described as a ‘train wreck’, whereas Simon Pegg grabbed the award for ‘Worst Actor’ for ‘Hector and the Search for Happiness’. In addition to the awardees, there were some actors who made their place in the nomination for their worst performances in films, like Cameron Diaz was nominated for ‘Worst Actress’ in ‘Sex Tape’, and David Walliams was shortlisted for ‘Worst Actor’ for voicing the dog in ‘Pudsey the Dog: the Movie’ Special prizes included the ‘Dick van Dyke Award’ for disastrous accent awarded that was honoured to Russell Crowe for his baffling accent in ‘A New York Winter’s Tale›.
Cindy Crawford launches healthy meal service Former supermodel Cindy Crawford is launching a healthy meal service called “Cindy’s Essentials”. Crawford, 48, has worked on the new meal plan alongside Urban Remedy founder Neka Pasquale, reported Ace Showbiz. Speaking of the project, Crawford has been quoted by Elle magazine as saying, “To me, the best thing about Cindy’s Essentials is how you sprinkle it your real life. “It’s not a cleanse. That’s such a thing, like ‘Oh, I’m on a cleanse.’ But this is just having something as convenient as vending machine food that›s good for you.” Cindy’s Essentials is said to focus on raw snacks, meals and cold-pressed juices. Besides, its food would include pasta, such as Zucchini Fettuccine Pesto, Zucchini Fettuccine Marinara, Quinoa bowls and snacks, including various brittles and kale chips. When asked about her own favorite healthy meal, Crawford said, “A kale salad with salmon.”

However, the actor who was last seen taking on the New York Mafia in his movie John Wick has clarified that he doesn’t like people referring to his action scenes as mere “stunts.” Talking about his iconic scenes from movies like The Matrix and Speed the actor confesses,”I don’t do any stunts. Stunt men do stunts. But if I’m doing it, it’s not a stunt. I get to do some physical acting. I get involved in some action but they’re not stunts. Emma Stone reveals her ‘fascination’ with death Emma Stone has confessed that she has a fascination with death, afterlife, ghosts and cemeteries. While speaking to Australia’s Cleo magazine, the 26-year-old actress said that she has always wondered what happens once a person dies, giving credit of her dark curiosity to childhood and upbringing, Contactmusic reported. However, the ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’ star, who believes “life is finite,” added that it were her thoughts on death that encouraged her to grab every opportunity with both hands and live life to the fullest, as she was aware that one day she would die. Stone said that parents saw things her way too and have supported her in her acting plans, with her mother even moving to Los Angeles with her when she was only 15.

The 87th Academy Award nominations are actually cast by Hollywood house maids, or so says veteran film critic Barry Norman. While speaking to Radio Times, Norman said that Oscar voters don’t generally watch every film and some of them, especially the elderly, get their maids to watch them on DVD and deliver their opinions, the Independent reported. Chris Martin had once even admitted that he filled in the form belonging to his then-wife, and former Best Actress winner Gwyneth Paltrow, where he voted for Mickey Rourke. Norman said that while being nominated for an Oscar was a victory in itself, when it came to picking the winners, people tend to vote their personal likes and dislikes. The critic supported his “maid theory” giving example of the 2011 film ‘The Help,’ as the American period drama about a young white woman and her relationship with two black maids, set during the Civil Rights era in 1963, had bagged four big Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress for Davis, Best Supporting Actress for Chastain, and a win for Best Supporting Actress for Octavia Spencer.

Jamie Dornan is planning to go low profile after he finishes promoting ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’. The 32-year-old actor, who appeared on ‘The Graham Norton Show’, said he is planning to flee from Hollywood following the film’s release. “I am fleeing the country. I am certainly not going to stand in Leicester Square without my shirt, asking people if they enjoyed the movie! I am keeping a low profile,” he said. Dornan, who plays the lead character of Christian Grey in the erotic film, also revealed his wife, Amelia Warner, wouldn’t be going to catch the movie in the cinema. “She hasn’t seen the film and I don’t think she will, to be honest. The 49-year-old appeared on ‘The Flipside with Michael Loftus,’ and said that his slogan for the campaign would be “Sheen and Sheen in ‘16,” the Washington Times reported. E
minent Romanian DJ and producer Edward Maya descended In Bahrain a little over a month ago, treating his fans in Ibrida, at the Ramee Grand Hotel and Spa, to previews of hypnotic soundscapes from his upcoming album, which is due to be released in the summer. This was the artist’s second visit to Bahrain. Being raised in an environment that treasures the true artistic value of musicianship and revels in the mastering of instrumental skill, it was Edward’s deep rooted love and passion for music that encouraged him to start his career as an international artist attending Bucharest’s George Enescu Music High School and then at the Bucharest Conservatory. In the summer of 2009, Maya launched his first song as an artist, “Stereo Love”
A Class Apart which topped number 2 in the Romanian singles charts and later became a hit in clubbing places all over the world. In an exclusive rendezvous, Sabaya’s Puja Tiwari delved into the musician’s inspirations, dreams and future plans. How would you describe both your visits to Bahrain? This was my second time in Bahrain. The first time was two years ago at a beach party and the crowd went totally manic. It was amazing to see such a profound response and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. It was great this time around as well, and I look forward to visiting in the summer again. What inspires you to create music? Inspiration comes from anything and everything, especially classical music and artists of yesteryear like Michael Jackson. Inspiration strikes like magic, from the most mundane tasks and that synthesizes into music. How did you decided to take up music as a career? It was my childhood dream, and I strived hard to achieve my vision. I went to music school and made sure I put in my best efforts to get to where I am now. What can we expect from you in 2015? Definitely new songs, collaborations and a new album and world tour is in the pipeline. What do you think of Bahrain? I love Bahrain, it is an amazing country and I hope to return during the summer. I love all my fans from the Kingdom.

Success Story
P
ower-driven entrepreneur Nawaf Al Zayani is the perfect example of entrepreneurial success. Euro Motors recently achieved a great milestone by inaugurating the Land Rover Experience Centre at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) where Mr Zayani sat down with Sabaya to give us an insight into his life. How do you feel about the establishment of the Land Rover Experience Centre? What value does it add to customer purchases? It is a thrilling experience and a proud achievement for Euro Motors. Often, customers ask why a serious and poignant question: ‘’Why should I buy a Land Rover and not another SUV?” That’s because this is the real SUV. When you bring a vehicle to this track and show a customer what it can do, it speaks for itself. It adds credibility and authenticity to the product, reinforcing the decision-making power of the customers. It was a marriage of experiences and expectations between the BIC, Land Rover UK and Euro Motors. We had a commitment to give something different to
the people, making a statement for all of us. What does Euro Motors have in store for 2015? To start with, we launched the Discovery Sport last month, a new product line up from Jaguar is in the pipeline, a dedicated showroom for Land Rover and Jaguar which will be opening during the summer and launches of new, exciting products are lined up throughout the year. You deal with a people-oriented business. Can you elaborate a little on the same? The car business is very interactive; it is unique and brings customers back to you on almost a monthly basis. It is an interesting mix of retail and hospitality, and I love this aspect of my day-to-day workings. Though it can be challenging sometimes, it is still invigorating and refreshing.
Lots of young people get overwhelmed, excited and anxious when dealing with adversity. Look at your problem, analyse it by breaking it down into smaller parts that you can manage and then get on with it. Since you’re a busy man, how do you bring about balance between work and play? There is no balance and unfortunately work wins over play every day. It’s a challenge for me to master this balance and I do my best to even out the scales.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve received while growing up that can be shared with Bahrain’s youth? The best advice I can offer them is advice given to me by my uncle, which is: Don’t complicate things, keep it simple.

I
Talented duo from Vuruz vision, Abdullah Rahal and Hisham Tawfiqi create experimental artscapes using visual media. Their art has attracted attention from various events happening around Bahrain. They explain their creative venture to Sabaya in a candid interview. How did you two meet? The first time we met was actually at Al Dar islands during the Eclipse Festival where we were both working. At the time, each of us were doing visuals and shooting videos. We had similar interests and pretty much clicked from our first meeting. How did you guys end up collaborating with each other to form Vuruz Vision? A few months after our first encounter, we would sit down together and have sessions during which we would experiment and work on things together. We decided to collaborate after shooting a film together since we decided to experiment further with different sorts of digital media, projection mapping and projection animation so we could see what comes out of it. The end result was Vuruz Vision! What made you guys come up with the name ‘Vuruz Vision’? The name Vuruz Vision was pretty much the outcome of a brainstorming session, which Abdulla and I had. ‘Vuruz’ is an acronym for ‘visual gurus’, whereas the word ‘Vision’ in our brand name signifies the overall vision we have for it. When did you get started and how has it caught on since? We started with a few small gigs and events less than a year ago and people just loved our work! Since then, we’ve met quite a few organisers and artists, and have started working together with them. We’ve now introduced new forms of art into our programme, which just keeps growing and growing. There is a demand in the art and corporate scene since it really is a creative field and we can work with people from different backgrounds. It’s really big right now and that’s where we’re at, so we’re going to keep collaborating and developing our concept. I’ve seen some of your work at Baratigi and it’s very unique! Where do you get the inspiration? It’s a show on it’s own! Well, our inspiration basically comes from matter, our surroundings and the environment we live in. Before every event, we put our minds together and
Art-Spect come up with a concept; so we have structures, content and everything else in mind before we set out. For Boho Baha’s Baratigi event, we used a floating cube and had projections on a row of trees. For every event that we work on, we have a special feature, object or installation that we introduce based on the music, vibe and name of the event. So we’re really inspired and take notice of everything around us. Ideas will click everyday if you just take notice of your surroundings! Which projects or events have you guys worked on to-date? Do you have any favourites? We’ve actually worked on some pretty diverse events including corporate, private and clubbing events. Some of our most recent projects are the Bahrain Music Conference, Bahrain Noor Al Ain and some of Red Bull’s installations. We can’t quite pinpoint our favourite, since we enjoy working on all of them. However, we’d have to say that our favourite people to work with are the Boho Baha team since they usually have open and creative spaces. The possibility of exploration and creativity is really endless in their spaces. We plan on working on more projects and collaborating with a variety of artists including visual artists, animators, graffiti artists and painters. We also plan on including carpentry and woodworks so we’re really going to be merging everything together. What would be your dream project? Do you guys have any thoughts of working at international festivals? We are focusing and aiming to eventually work on international festivals but at the same time, we want to create art, interactive and collaborative installations
on the streets. It’s really more about creating an impact on society by introducing a different form of art. Working on international festivals or at international art galleries would be great though. I think the dream project for us would be to work at events that mainly focus on interactive installations. In The Spotlight
E
minent media personality and National Press Officer of the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) is a man of his own class, brimming with talent. Having started his career in the defence force, and then moving to work as an engineer, he found his niche in the public relations industry. He recounts his journey and laces us with some fun facts about himself in a candid rendezvous with Sabaya Magazine. You’ve had a fairly interesting career journey. Please narrate your experience so far. I come from a very contrasting background as opposed to media. I studied radar engineering in the US originally. I was a military personnel, I joined the navy in 1998, where I served for six years. I joined Bahrain Radio and Television Corporation, which was part of the Ministry of Information as a satellite engineer. I come from a family which was immersed in performing arts. My mom and dad were actors which beckoned me to follow their footsteps, and I got into acting soon after I left the military. I then had the opportunity to join the PR Team of the Information Affairs Authority (IAA) and became the acting Head of Department. I always remember a friend of mine telling me that I am better in dealing with people more than
machines and this job paved my path into the PR industry. My biggest project at the IAA was the media centre of the 2010 elections, which I managed and set up. After that, I got an offer from BIC to join the PR team in 2011, where I am currently the National Press Officer. What is your perspective of the public relations industry? How has your experience been in this field? It is a great field! I’m currently doing my masters in media and PR from the Chartered Institute of Public Relations in the United Kingdom. PR is not something you can just study; it is a skill you gain through practical application. I’ve always had this talent within me, but over the years I’ve honed it to perfection. How do you bring a balance between work and play? What are your hobbies? When you reach 35, and you are in the pay scale for 17 years, it’s sort of difficult to have your own time. Whenever I have free time, its family time and I enjoy being with my two daughters, Jood who is 6 and Ayesha who is 2, and my wife. I am a geek and I have my own entertainment den at home with gadgets aplenty. My wife jokingly titles it as the ‘Guantanamo’ room because once I get in there, then I’m not coming out anytime soon. I’m also a biker so I like bike cruising on the weekends. What do you consider as your proudest achievement till date?
I believe that being where I stand right now is the proudest achievement right now. I started my career in the navy and then ended up being the National Press Officer of the Bahrain International Circuit, that is my noblest achievement. Where do you see yourself in the next five years? No one knows where he will be in the next five minutes, five years is a long time to think of. I like what I’m doing and I think BIC has a lot of potential and I see myself in this organization for a long time, with bettering career prospects. What advice can you give Bahrain’s youth? Nothing comes easy, if you don’t follow your dreams and chase them down, they will vanish in front of your eyes. Also, nothing is impossible. If you can dream it, you can do it. And lastly, life is too short so do not waste the air you are breathing. I also know that you stand true to family values and believe in close-knit family connections. Would you like to elaborate on the same? I’d like to thank my mom and my wife. My mom went through a tragic phase during the 90s after losing my dad and younger sister and I didn’t help the matter at the time. I was a rebellious teenager and had no one to rein my discipline. But now, my mother is really proud of me and where I stand in life. Even my wife is very understanding and things at home are harmonious. Family always comes first and we always stick together.

Lucy Liu
The actress wore a Zuhair Murad Couture rose-gold strapless gown with a metallic beaded tulle overlay for the occasion. As a fan of all things Lucy Liu, Zuhair Murad and sequins, nothing is working here for me. On JLo or Beyonce this would’ve been perfect as this is the look they live for, but on Lucy my first thought this is so out of tune with her style. While it’s nice to flip the script and do something different from time to time, this is a no from me.

Alexa Chung
Alexa Chung was in attendance wearing an Edun Pre-Fall 2015 dress, which was muted in tone yet standout in sartorial impact. Rendered mid-weight fabrication for an effortlessly polished look, I love the chain-lace detailed neckline adding a touch of pizzazz to this simple silhouette. While Alexa presents a more polished appearance these days, going from tomboy grunge to ladylike chic, she does add the occasional charming quirk to her look, on this occasion styling her LBD with a Lulu Guinness ‘Eye’ clutch, which sees the lip-loving bag designer create an equally covetable and eye-catching accessory. It has taken me a while to ‘get’ her style, but you can very much now consider me a fan.

Rihanna
The look on this occasion was simple, classic and elegant – not words I usually attribute to the singer on the red carpet, but here you have it. Despite this look not feeling very Rihanna-like – attention-seeking with a touch of OTTness – I’m enamoured by the shapeenhancing structure and that rich maroon hue with matching Manolos. After the show she was spotted leaving the venue wearing a Chanel Pre-Fall 2015 coat in a similar hue finished with a metallic sheen.
Dakota Johnson
on this occasion she opted for festive silver sparkles, wearing a striped sequin Sonia Rykiel frock styled with silver Gianvito Rossi sandals, which sees her not shying away from the spotlight. I know some of you aren’t that impressed with her style, calling it stale and boring, while other will say it’s has been elegant and classic, but I love how on this occasion she appears to be having more fun. My only irritation is the coat. Had I not seen other pictures of her sans furry coat I would’ve assumed that it was attached to her dress. With so many gowns on this red carpet, I love the party pizzazz and high-fashion glamour she brought to the table. MARCH 2015

The French beauty stunned wearing a canary yellow Prada gown with cap sleeves and cut-outs at the waist. How does she do it? How does Léa always manage to get the best Prada gown when the designer’s hit rate is well below 50 percent? This was my favourite of the night. Dramatic, bold in colour, sexy, and elegant— with her confidence shining through. Chopard jewels, a stylish blow out and bold red lipstick completed this BDOTY worthy look.
Lily James
Having her own enchanted moment, the starlet wore a subtly shimmering, ballet-pink silk gown with pleated detailing and a tonal waistband for shaping. The beauty of the look was in its minimalist simplicity, in which dainty De Beers jewels provided a graceful touch of sparkle alongside her sleek, centre-parted strands. Of course, the Jimmy Choo ‘Cinderella’ shoes, commissioned especially for the occasion, were another jewel piece having been encrusted with hundreds of crystals. Here, Lily is the epitome of a modern princess.

Classic feminine edge Khirma New York by Khirma Eliazov

F
eminine, bold and edgy is how one can describe Khirma Eliazov’s namesake handbag brand. Khirma is a classic example of how resilience can help you achieve your dreams. Former fashion editor and brand consultant Khirma Eliazov launched her namesake label in 2009 featuring luxurious handbags textured and layered with various exotic skins and leather. Combining beauty and functionality, each piece is designed to empower the wearer, emanating an eclectic statement with glamorous design and regal purple satin linings on the inside. “Anyone can wear a bag, no matter what size you are and still feel beautiful. I have the gift of making a woman feel empowered with the right accessories,” said Khirma. She also explained that each bag is named after someone important in her life, which helped and supported her through the process. “For example, there is a line named Herzog, who was my best friend in high school and it’s funny that it has become the collection’s bestseller,” she added. Her handbags have various layers, much like her source of inspiration, which comes from people she meets and the various layers they harbour. Khirma Eliazov is favoured among
celebrities such as Blake Lively, Alesandra Ambrosio, Sienna Miller and Jennifer Lopez. She sat down with Sabaya as we enquired about her journey with the brand and her future goals. What inspired the shape of the bags? I’m someone who is always running around and I like to have a bag that is crossbody and functional during the day and something luxurious during the night. So I created something that was a classic shape, and would be able to transition with ease from day to night. I’ve compartmentalized the inside so you can fit in your cards and money without having the need to put in a wallet. Tell me more about the materials used for the bags. We use diverse exotic skins like stingray, python, lizard and crocodile. For me, a bag is like a human being, with so many different layers, and true beauty is showcased when all these layers are put together. I wanted to create a bag that was feminine and edgy at the same time, to make the woman feel. When the woman carries the bag, I want her to feel empowered when she carries the bag. How did you establish Khirma New York? What did the idea stem from? Well, ignorance is bliss and I had no idea
how much work goes in to making a bag. We should always start with what we know best and being an accessories editor, I was familiar with handbags. I started with the most difficult material, which is stingray and paired it with other exotic textures. I was determined to design handbags and found out who the best sample maker was in New York that worked with all the top shots, and convinced him to make my first three samples. Things took off for the best hence forth. What is the most rewarding aspect about having your own collection? Just four years ago, I was running around with a sketchpad and now we are placed in 60 stores worldwide. I love that I envisioned something, executed it and someone else gets to enjoy end result. Here I am, in Bahrain, making my dreams come true. You can make anything happen as long as you’re passionate about it. Just go for it without limiting yourself with fear. Who are your favourite designers? Dior, because they are really timeless and work with fantastic fabrics. I also admire Chanel because they always come up with something new, which inspires. What’s in store for the new collection? The next collection will be all about light, fresh and fun pastels, in accord with spring and summer. MARCH 2015

Techno Talk HP Envy 7640
Affordable all-in-one packs in the features but loses points for style and print quality
The Envy 7640 is one of several models in HP’s refreshed fleet of all-in-one colour printers aimed at homes and small offices. The 7640 is one of the first to feature compatibility with HP’s Instant Ink service, which delivers ink to your door when you’re almost in need of a top-up for a monthly fee. The Envy isn’t much of a looker. Its slightly chunky dimensions and rounded corners makes it equally suitable for homes or smaller offices. Wherever it’s stored, you’ll find it difficult to stave off fingerprints - particularly on its reflective front edge. It packs a number of features including a 25-page document feeder with separate trays for plain and photo paper, in addition to automatic two-sided printing and Wi-Fi Direct compatibility. In the box you’ll find the printer, one HP 62 black ink cartridge, one HP 62 tricolour ink cartridge, a software CD, set of instructions, power cord and a phone cord. For connectivity, the Envy 7640 has two USB 2.0 ports on its side, in addition to 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and one Ethernet port. It features Wi-Fi Direct for printing on mobile devices using HP
ePrint, Apple AirPrint and other solutions.
Final verdict
The HP 7640 is an affordable, hassle-free printer that’s easy to set up and packs an impressive feature set. It’s a convenient option thanks to the ability to feed in different paper types, and can potentially lower the total cost of ownership thanks to compatibility with HP’s Instant Ink service depending on how much you print. On the downside, it’s not much of a looker and photo quality isn’t particularly great, meaning the Envy 7640
isn’t a model that we would recommend to the photography crowd. It also had a tendency to suck through too many pages at once, and jams became a common occurrence.
Techno Logic Latest Gadgets and what you will love about them! LG G Flex 2
This curved Android phone flexes with more muscle
The LG G Flex 2 I tested this week isn’t the world’s first curved smartphone, but it is the first one that has the muscle to back up its constant, ostentatious flexing. This concave Android phone is the follow-up to the 2013’s LG G Flex and, while it bends the same way, it has new dimensions and a much better display that make it less of a gimmick. LG G Flex 2 is noticeably smaller and easier to hold with a 5.5-inch screen, which matches the display size of the LG G3. Going with that new, more manageable size is a high-resolution P-OLED touchscreen that’s 1080p, up from the decidedly deficient 720p display of the original. It can recover from light scratches in about 10 seconds, due to its high-density molecular shell. For those still waiting to upgrade to Android 5.0 Lollipop, the LG G Flex 2 is a shortcut to unlocking the newest version of Google’s mobile operating system. The phone comes with the OS pre-loaded and is a huge improvement over the original LG G Flex that used the LG G2 interface.
Final verdict
Ultimately, the LG G Flex 2 is a trendier-looking LG G3 variant with the same great camera and better battery life than the first. If the price is right, it’s time to take a chance on something new, and for the Flex series to graduate from cult hit into the mainstream.

Techno Talk Sennheiser Momentum Wireless
Incredible audio fidelity backed by a serious price The headband of the Momentum Wireless is sandwiched between different textures of leather for comfort. The bottom of the headband is coated in leather that feels like it belongs on a deluxe ottoman, while the top feels like a ruggedized wallet. Stainless steel sidearms are attached to the leather headband by hinges that offer stability, style and a satisfying foldup action. These “collapsible sliders” as Sennheiser calls them, are durable and have an inherent ability to bend, enabling the Momentum Wireless to achieve the ideal fit. The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless make a stellar impression before you even power them on. The ball joint earcups don’t move an inch once they wrap around your ears. The headband’s underside provides the perfect amount of support. Nothing more, nothing less.
But a surprise I wasn’t expecting is how lightweight it is. Somehow, this hodgepodge of classy materials doesn’t weigh it down. As such, comfort was never an issue. The leather-covered memory foam ear pads are incredibly comfortable and I’d be content keeping these on all day.
XYZ printing Da Vinci 1.0
Affordable 3D printing directly aimed at the education sector 3D printing has created an inevitable buzz, but few outside of the design and engineering professions seem able to fully grasp the point. The largest consumer sector at present using 3D printers is the hobbyists, and even then it’s more the tech-savvy geek rather than the mainstream modeller, and the reason for this is that the 3D printing process requires skill, time and patience – it’s just not as easy as you think it should be. If you take a photo you can simply download and print it off. However, if you want to create a simple animal model, then you have to learn modelling techniques and often build and configure the 3D printer, all before hitting the print button. Despite the huge footprint of 46.8cm x 51cm x 55.8cm (W x H x D) the Da Vinci is well designed, with the main 20cm x 20cm build plate being fully encased within a plastic casing, accessed through a large door on the front. Standard STL files downloaded from the internet or exported from applications such as Cinema 4D are accepted by the XYZprinting software and will open directly into the 3D view. Once your model is open you have the ability to move it across the application’s 3D representation of the build plate, adjust its size and rotation, and make sure that it is based correctly.
Final verdict
If you’re prototyping or looking for a cheap 3D printer for intricate modelling then it’s worth saving for a more expensive model. However, if you’re looking for a 3D printer to use in an educational environment, then the closed system and enclosed print area along with the price makes this an ideal solution.

JEEP CHEROKEE TRAIL HAWK RATED
By Fayez Abubacker
INTRODUCTION
Once upon a time, sport-utility vehicles were covered in mud, traversing streams and doing it all in the face of frugality. In the decades since, though, most car shoppers have realized that more sensible crossover SUVs are the way to go for everyday use. Jeep has tried to apply its off-roading heritage to some of its more civilized small crossovers (think Compass and Patriot), but the results have been disappointing. Thankfully, the 2015 Jeep Cherokee finally does come close to delivering the best of both real-world usability and capable off-road performance. 46
MARCH 2015
OUR 6 POINT REVIEW 1. EXTERIOR
The 2015 Cherokee can end up looking a lot more appealing if you get to know it first. The sharp, futuristic front-end design is a direct challenge to square-jawed, Jeep tradition. Breaking up its LED running-light eyebrows from the headlamps is a clever idea for cool looks after the sun sets, but in daylight it delivers a tiered face that looks like it›s been woken up too early. The essential seven-bar grille looks thinly drawn here; what was once a point of pride for Jeep is now an effete afterthought. However there›s plenty else aesthetically appealing in the Cherokee to redeem it.
Auto Review
6. EQUIPMENTS
2. INTERIOR
Touches of metallic flash exude luxury. Beyond the design, all the controls are laid out in the straightforward fashion with high-quality, low-gloss, soft-touch surfaces. It can seat five on Nappa leather upholstery. The rear seat reclines and the high-mounted bench supports adults› thighs. This is one of the better backseats in the compact crossover class. Where the Cherokee comes up short against the competition is in cargo space. Even with the sliding second row moved to its forwardmost position, cargo volume is rated at 29.7 cubic feet. I still think most shoppers will find the cargo area spacious enough for most needs.
3. PERFORMANCE
Powered by 3.2L Pentastar V6 rated at 271 ponies and 239 lb-ft; the engine is teamed to a seamless nine-speed automatic transmission, a first for Jeep and its Chrysler parent. It is estimated to achieve 22 mpg on an average. The Trailhawk models are 4WD and Active Drive II system, which features low-range gearing and locking rear differential to give the vehicle extra capability in off-road situations. In addition, Cherokees feature a Selec-Terrain dial with selectable Auto, Snow, Sport and Sand/Mud modes to optimize traction including Hill start assist and Hill descent control. It has a healthy 4,500-pound towing capacity.
streets and even into some unpaved ruts and speed bumps. On the highway, the Cherokee didn’t seem underpowered. The Trailhawk’s acceleration and handling is sensational. High-speed cornering is met without any fuss or body roll. High-speed, rapid braking is hugely confident too. It accelerated through the sands and rock also with little struggle, kicking down a gear aggressively when needed.
5. SAFETY
The Cherokee offers a number of sophisticated active-safety and convenience features that are still relatively rare in this mainstream class -- including available adaptive cruise control that can bring it to a full stop if an impending collision is detected; optional lane-departure and forward-collision warning systems; blindspot monitors and parking sensors that can also trigger the vehicle to a full stop at low speeds, if obstacles are detected. It comes with 10 standard airbags including driver and front passenger knee bolster airbags. The rear seats also have side, seat-mounted airbags as well as curtain airbags.
This off-roader is four wheel driven and comes with low-range gears, 17inch wheels and all-terrain tires, offroad oriented suspension tuning, a rear locking differential, skid plates and tow hooks. Standard equipment includes LED running lights, fog lights, cruise control; keyless entry. You can opt for some of the desirable stuff, like the 506-watt 9 speaker Alpine audio system; a panoramic sunroof; a convenience package with push start button, satellite radio, power driver seat, power tailgate, rearview camera, remote start and Uconnect with an 8.4inch touchscreen and smartphone-app connectivity.
VERDICT
I was pretty darn skeptical of the Cherokee, when I first saw it. How wrong I was. The real-world usability starts with the Cherokee›s quiet, comfortable and even plush ride quality. The well-laid-out interior comes with some fantastic standard and optional tech features. We›re also fond of the V6 engine, which is smooth and has plenty of power and decent fuel economy ratings. Once the pavement ends, Jeep has you covered with the Cherokee Trailhawk trim level with low-range gearing and special equipment like a locking rear differential, which can go much farther off-road than your standard all-wheel-drive crossover.
To arrange a Test Drive or for more information Call: Ahmed Al-Zayani and Sons on: 17238822
4. RIDE & HANDLING
A pleasant surprise. Starting with the plush, comfortable ride the engine noises were shockingly absent from the cabin; so too were the wind and road noise. Its steering delivers less feedback with good accuracy. The Cherokee rides very well with smooth damping over most urban MARCH 2015

Extravagant morning delight Breakfast at Neyran, Mercure Grand 48
MARCH 2015

W
hen it comes to breakfast, most of us don’t have time for much more than a slice of toast and tea. Neyran, located at the Mercure Grand Hotel, turns the most important meal of the day into a sumptuous affair. Offering a breakfast buffet every day of the week, Neyran will leave you spoilt for choice, with every possible victual you can think of. Typically not a morning person, I headed to Mercure Grand, where I was warmly greeted by the Director of Sales and Marketing of the hotel, Ahmed Hishmeh. Neyran is an all-day international bistro, with authentically Mediterranean décor, a
rustic aura enveloping the atmosphere. The breakfast buffet includes staunch staples such as eggs, sausages, fresh fruits, pastries potatoes as well as traditional Arabic favourites like foul, labneh, zaatar and dried fruits. There is also a ‘healthy’ option for the calorie-conscious, with a selection of dried fruits, nuts and porridge. A live cooking station is set in the centre of the restaurant, with cold cuts and condiments on one end and eggs and pancakes being whipped up by Chef Majeed on the other end. There is a certain charm about witnessing pancakes being cooked right in front of your eyes, watching as the syrup drenches the dough is sweet goodness. Another interesting aspect of the breakfast is the myriad of bread selection, which is freshly baked in-house with dough imported from France, a signature feature in Accor hotels worldwide. The extravagant spread can easily pass off as brunch, and there is something for everyone. The breakfast is priced at BD 11.500 per person. But be warned, it will be difficult to settle for a mundane slice of fruit and toast after you have experienced the luxurious spread at Neyran! For reservations, call: 17584400. MARCH 2015

Soak up the sun It probably has been a long time since you’ve had the chance to just chill by the pool or beach. Getting a suntan without the constant watching over children and worrying about them can be a challenge. Grab the opportunity of having a few extra hours and soak up the sun.
