scholars hug ms. robertson at the multicultural potluck, reminding us to hold on tight to all the magic we get to experience through sa-bh. photo by Kathy Freytor

We Love our school The other day I received an email requesting a graphic I made to help drivers understand how morning drop-off can run more smoothly. Another school is trying to emulate the SA-BH routine. I sent the graphic, but it’s not enough. We have a secret ingredient—and they can’t have her. Last year, Ms. Robertson had to be there to greet my scholar; her presence set the tone for the whole event. Parents simply feel better handing off their children to someone who exudes so much joy for each scholar’s arrival. At the beginning of this year, as parents of returning scholars stopped to catch up with each other during drop-off and watched Ms. Robertson scoop up inconsolable scholars, magically turns tears into laughter, the parents would ask each other, “What would we do without her?” New parents felt “it,” too. While it is unimaginable that we could lose staff members we love, special interest groups threaten the entire future of Success Academies. Our cozy community grows stronger as we stand together to fight for our children. A handful of last year’s teachers and staff left SA-BH to take on new challenges, but their absence is felt. What would we do with any of SA-BH’s familiar faces? If you love SA-BH, tell all your representatives in city, state, and U.S. government, but be sure to start with Secretary of Education Arne Duncan @arneduncan.

Dance is the hidden language of the soul —Martha Graham

Using Evidence Funny thing my 2nd grader said... While attempting to read Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Catepillar, I was interrupted to be told that the book is about a life cycle and a complete metamorphosis. But as I began to read the end of the book, I received an entire lecture on why this book is inaccurate. Apparently, for those who don’t know, a hungry little catepillar would not build a ‘cocoon’ around himself. He builds a chrysalis, and she knows this because he became a butterfly. If he had built a cocoon around himself, he would have metaphorphed into a moth! Mike drop. —Illona Bobritsky

Winter is Coming Scholars do not have to wear their uniform shoes in the snow. Be sure to talk to your scholar’s teacher about leaving shoes in the classroom so your scholar doesn’t have to carry them every day. Also, please label all hats, gloves, and scarves.

Gon’ Give It To You QU rehearses “Uptown Funk” for Winter Performance December 15, all SA-BH scholars will perform dance routines on the auditorium stage—quite an accomplishment considering how many other skills these little scholars are learning to master at the same time. If you would like to volunteer to assist with the performance, email Ms. Hayes at heresia.hayes@saschools.org.
