Flashback CMU-Harvard is ready for action September 17, 2015

On your mark... Get set! It’s a new school year. From new shoes to new school hours, we’re off on quite an adventure this year. Whatever you or your scholar is feeling, you are probably not alone.

Dismissal is a good time to get to know more of the adults in our community, but the Parent Council also gathers for breakfasts and school-wide playdates. Keep an eye out for opportunities in the school’s ACTION flyer or join the closed Facebook group. And be sure to visit sabhfamilies.com. It’s your job to be an emotion coach for your scholar, but other parents in our community can do the same for you. What’s an “emotion coach”? Someone who will help you identify, label, and validate your feelings. And if you have a scholar who is screaming on the sidewalk outside the school, “anxiety” is probably a good label. Don’t tell your scholar to relax, though. Help your scholar get excited! The brain can’t tell the difference between anxiety and excitement, so spin all that energy in a positive direction. Our school is fun—scholars can enter the building with lots of energy. (They have to walk up four flights...) And remember you should be positive, too. It’s going to be a good year! —MV

accident packs All elementary school scholars must have an accident pack at school at all times. These extra clothes will help them feel more comfortable in case of an accident (spills, getting sick, bathroom accident, etc.). Pack a pair of underwear, a pair of uniform socks (or tights), a uniform shirt, and a jumper or pair of uniform pants.

individualized education Plans (iePs) are created to improve educational results for children with disabilities. not all children with iePs require a specific ratio of teachers to students. integrated Co-Teaching class structures (a new version of Collaborative Team Teaching) offers support for children who need it while still challenging children who don’t. After School Below is a list of local after school programs. Inform the Main Office to add the program and the approved individual to your scholar’s Pick-Up List. Chermonomets Soccer chernomorets.org (718) 419-9765 After School

Morning Routine We’ve lucked out with track work on the N making stops at Bay Parkway in both directions, plus the B6, B82, and B4 stopping nearby with a crossing guard to help at the W 12th Street and Ave. P intersection. But to top it all off, SA-BH introduced the Kiss and Ride option for drivers. Pull up at curbside, an SA-BH staff member will pull your scholar from the car, and you drive away. That easy!
