Iroquois Nation Nae nae Aranda, Kayla Combs, Regeana Finney, Ashleigh,Maddox Crittenden Middle School February 28, 2017 Mrs. Venable and Ms. Locke



Food The Iroquois mostly ate corn, squash, beans, deer, fish, and Elk. They also ate Fruits, Nuts, berries, weeds, and crops. They ate this food because they were farmers and hunters. they used wooden tools, they carved by hand (bones, schools, forks,etc.), bone needle animal fiber twine, stone hammer, elm-bark basket. This is a chart of what they mostly ate.


Food They also stored there food in there houses (were they stored everything on shelves).The food is Different From ours because , now we have all these spices (salt, pepper,etc.), and all these sauces (barbeque, hot sauce, ketchup,etc.). Back then they Did Not have all these items to make there food taste better. We still eat the food they ate. most of the food they ate we eat as sides for are dinners (berries, corn, beans, squash). Back Then These is a chart displaying their grains, meats, they ate less , so they had enough for vegetables, and fruits. everyone in their community.


The Iroquois were hunters, fishermen, and farmers.


Arts and Crafts

Arts and Crafts The (writing) Iroquois were known for their mask cravings.They considered this a sacred art form.But non-Iroquois were not supposed to see some of the old masks.They also made wampum beads out of colored shell beads.The wampum often had a story woven in it.The Iroquois played drums filled with water.(That was different from other tribes). This is a mask for the Iroquois


Arts and Crafts (writing) Flutes were carved from woad by the people.The drums had water in them.there is a games and sports they played called lacrosse.It is a combination soccer,basketball,and hockey. It is played with a stick and a ball.A ball is made of deer skin ,baked clay on a stone.they made community songs and dances.corn husk dolls for the girls dart games for boys.

The most common toy for the Iroquois girls was a corn husk doll. There were also toy games made out of bowls and peach pits. One side of the peach pit was. .


Birchbark Triangle and Ball Game Our own unique design, based on the description of a traditional toy used by Penobscot children, this game consisted of a stiff piece of birch bark cut into a triangular shape, with a hole in the center. To one corner of the bark triangle is attached a string, and a ball is attached to the other end of the string. The circular hole in the center of the bark triangle is made only slightly larger than the ball attached to the string. The object of the game is to get the ball to drop through the hole. Measures approximately 6" wide.


Transportation The Iroquois mainly walked on foot for transportation. Their transportation also depended on the seasons and the trees they had.


In The winter they use snow dogs to travel on sleds.


These canoes they hand carved. They used tree trunks.

The Iroquois needed to travel place to place. like when they moved in 1650, they moved west into Ohio near the Great Lakes. They used the canoes for fishing and traveling. They hollowed out the trees for their canoes. For snowshoes, they used tree boughs and animal bones.


These are the snowshoes they used in the winter..

In winter they used snowshoes and sleds carried by dogs. In spring,summer, and fall they used canoes for water transportation.


Shelter

The name of the shelter is called a longhouse. The longhouses are long and nar They have a shape that is long and curved.

This is a picture of an Iroquois village. Their villages were built with palisades (fences) around them for protection.


New york is great for farming, because the soil was fertile. New York has bitter cold winters. Fall and Spring in New York in really pleasant but summers are hot and humid . The major topography is characterized by heavy woods. That is why the Iroquois could afford to use so much wood to build their homes. They were also semi-nomadic because they moved to other locations every 10 years when the land they farmed on needed to be replenished.


Location The Iroquois originally lived within the boundaries of modern day New york the state is between the Adirondack mountains and Niagara falls . The Iroquois eventually extended along eastern seaboard of North America into the interior, from modern Kentucky to Southern Ontario, and down through the Delaware River Valley .Today only a few hundred Iroquois Indians can still be found in the state of Ohio.


Clothing They wear clothes that are made out of deerskin. Women and girls wear skirts and they skirts have decorated them with fringe, embroidery, and beadwork. They also used feathers and wood and seed from the wild to make their beads until the Europeans brought over glass beads. Women were 2 braids until they married at which time they only were 1 braid.



Clothing In ceremonies girls and women wore long dresses and skirts decorated with embroidery and men wore decorative regalia pants sometimes with European coats. Their clothes are affected by the heat and the moisture in the air. When a man married he became a member of his wife's family and lived with them

Interesting Fact The Iroquois children learned by watching the grownups instead of going to school. the girls had dolls made out of corn husk. they played a few games, one of the games was lacrosse.

They also had stories and legends they told. Their Origin Story is like our “Garden Of Eden.”

The Supernatural world of the Iroquois includes many deities. The most important of which is Great Spirit, who was responsible for the creations of Human beings, plants ,and animals.The iroquois believed that the great spirit guided the lives of ordinary people. When one dies they go down the “path of destiny” which is their journey after life. During their Ceremony for the Deceased, a speech is granted by the Chief at bedside. It last for 10 days, and then a home ceremony of tobacco burning releases the spirt.

The boys are Not allowed To hunt with the men until they catch an animal on their own. They do have A goverment of 50, chosen by the women. Each nation has 1 vote.
