In service to Sacramento Sacramento is an evolving city. Like the flow of the river it is based on, new businesses come in to fill empty buildings, and streets are paved and repaved. While the city of Sacramento is always changing, one thing will remain consistent: a glamorous Sacramento Fashion Week in February. This year promises to reel in the best of the best out of the local pool of talent and send them down the runway river to our invited guests. Also, as in previous years, Sacramento Fashion Week is honored to partner with Make-A-Wish Foundation速 of Sacramento and Northeastern California in raising funds for children with life-threatening diseases. So stick along for the ride; Sacramento Fashion Week is the premier fashion event of Northern California.

FRIDAY SHOWCASE Left-to-Right: Joycelynn Brown, ZuBauen, Casey Sue, Janelle Cardenas, Nelli Rosh, Michael J. Lopez, Gina Kim. (Not pictured: Dee Aguilar)

Casey Sue Casey Sue Douglass was born and raised in Eureka, California among the beautiful redwoods and some of the finest outdoor landscapes California has to offer. She is continually motivated to succeed while soaking up all that life has to offer. Casey Sue’s latest collection blends fabrics and prints that remind her of her roots in Humboldt County with colors that evoke the retro eighties in a sleek and shapely design.

Dee Aguilar When you think Dee, think dazzling. Dee Aguilar‘s radiant Spring/Summer 2012 collection is a marvelous medley of shocking pink, electric blue and eye-catching purple. Aguilar’s collections are a fun fusion of 80’s glam and tropical glamour. Not only are Aguilar’s clothes rich in color and animal prints, but they also boast fantastic floral patterns and fabulous form fitting designs. Dee knows any wearer is “bound to look bold and beautiful”.

Gina Kim Gina Kim is the inspiration behind independent clothing company Foreign Made Threads. She uses her love for music and hip-hop culture by infusing it into the very fabric behind both her cut and sewing lines. Her concentration on comfort and lifestyle, paired with her keen eye for detail, create a harmony that blends the lines between art, music and fashion. Often times quoting her motto and brand slogan, “everything is everything” Gina Kim ignores trends and simply focuses on making good clothing.

LOVE by Janelle Cardenas Inspired by icons like Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Twiggy you can expect Love by Janelle Cardenas designs to inspire you. Lush satin, prints, and vivid colors matched with clean line glamour are Love signatures. Love has been dubbed as “Old Hollywood glam with a touch of funk and intensity.” Cardenas’s goal is to create designs that compliment the uniqueness of every woman. Love by Janelle Cardenas is her developing vision of a line that embraces a classy lady’s quirkiness.

Joycelynn Brown Kennie’s Doll was created by Joycelynn Brown, a self taught designer and former model. Brown, who named the line for her daughter, is currently a full time Public Relations student at Sacramento State. Kennie’s Doll was created to offer women beautiful staples that can be worn for years to come, rather than the throw away fashions of today. Her Spring 2012 Collection features soft chiffon in shades of cornflower blue, mustard and apple green. So, be a doll… Kennie’s Doll.

Michael J. Lopez Michael Lopez was born and raised in Sacramento. Growing up adjacent to downtown, Lopez has become an expert in the fast past living that is downtown but Lopez also knows how to stop and enjoy the little things. This strength is translated through his garments. While his clothing is “cutting-edge” it is also created with careful attention to detail. He has become an established Sacramento designer and friend to local shop owners and stylists.

Nelli Rosh Nelli Rosh is both an innovative and passionate fashion designer who currently resides in Sacramento. Rosh graduated from the International Academy of Design & Technology. While Rosh is an extremely versatile designer, Rosh’s forte is creating unique and daring haute couture evening wear. Rosh strategically combines unique materials creative color combinations.

ZuBauen by Amanda Chan Amanda Chan’s new line is ZuBauen, named after the German word “to build up”. Every piece in her unique series can be exhibited as sculpture or on the moving body. Amanda chooses fashion as her format to tell stories about personal and universal experiences. Each part of her collection is an observation of people and their different environments. ZuBauen consists of clothing that is not governed by season or trend, but personal and global issues that affect us all.

SATURDAY SHOWCASE Left-to-Right: Dolene Simmalavong, Saul Latvanen, Vasily Vein, PLDM, Natalie Minori Sconce, Julian Gutierrez, Yennie Zhou

DOLZENROK Dolene Simmalavong, 21, is a self-taught clothing designer from San Jose, CA, who has taken inspiration from the major urban cities of Los Angeles and NYC and incorporated these style elements into her latest collections. Simmalavong’s clothing brand DOLZENROK is a masterly synthesis of street fashion and high fashion. This new and inventive line was created not only to reach out to women who are trendy, fearless, and confident; but also to embody the captivating personalities that we all possess.

Julian Gutierrez Julian Gutierrez, a current student at FIDM, creates his clothing with a unique approach; his garments and accessories are deeply influenced by his fears and personal flaws. Always the inventive designer, Gutierrez notes, “I am inspired by what others may find disgusting and ugly.” Guitierrez’s imagination really begins stirring when he is confronted by things that might seem unsettling to the rest of us. This unique style of design shows in his accessories and clothing, designed for those who “confidently live outside the norm”.

Natalie Minori Sconce After experimenting as both a model and clothes designer in high school, Natalie Minori Sconce decided to become an independent designer, a role she has performed well over the last six years. In 2007, she had the privilege of showcasing one of her designs at San Francisco Fashion Week as part of the “emerging stars collection”. Since then, she has shown three more collections and now serves as a fashion instructor and mentor at San Joaquin Delta College, where she founded the fashion program.

PLDM PLDM was formed in early 2010 to create quality products, which represent a lifestyle inspired by subcultures of music, skate, fashion, and art. This devotion to these communities has reaped incredible rewards, such as the great opportunity to have skater Matt Jordan wear a pair of their Chino pants in the upcoming February issue of new skate magazine Incognito . With all the experience that makes them who they are, they look forward to presenting their high-end, original, and developed style at Sacramento Fashion Week.

Saul Latvanen Saul Ramirez (Latvanen) was born in Michoacan, Mexico to a professional seamstress, and his family connection to clothing quickly grew into a love for the process of making new garments. With a unique sense of design and fashion developed with the help of his mother, Saul now works with his aunt in a boutique called Novedades Cazares. Though he has worked there successfully for two years, his strong passion for design has fueled a desire to pursue a degree in fashion at Sacramento City and American River College.

Vasily Vein Vasily Vein is a founder of Vasily Vein Art Design and a graduate of the Institute of Art in Krasnoyarsk, Russia. While living in Moscow, Vein created stage images for Russian rock and pop stars such as LINDA and T.A.T.U. Additionally, Vein’s designs have appeared in various big name magazines such as Marie Claire, Playboy, and BAYFashion. One recent highlight of Vein’s fashion designs was his part in creating a piece for a major charity event hosted by the former presidents of Ukraine and the U.S. Vasily Vein now currently resides in Sausalito, California, where he has participated in many Bay Area and Sacramento fashion shows.

Yennie Zhou The Y Couture, Zhou Dynasty Collection was designed based on the inspirations that come from nature. Yennie Zhou believes art exists in various forms and mediums, and can be captured within societies’ most used artistic canvas: fashion. Yennie began her higher education studies in the architectural engineering field. It is therefore no surprise that Zhou’s clothing is constructed with a expert sense of structure.
