When the weather outside is frightful and you are fresh out of fun ways to keep the kiddos entertained, turn to this list of ideas. The key is to stop thinking like an adult, and remember how to think like a kid. Once you accomplish this, who knows what kind of mischief you will help your kids dream up? And while we are on the subject, why not forget your grown-up responsibilities for a little while and join the kids? Your cabin fever will melt away once you all dive into these fun pastimes. 1. Become a builder. Make a fort after lunch and then live in it until dinner.

laughing yet? Add in funny breathing exercises.

2. Ready, set, duck! Ball up some clean socks, turn some furniture sideways, and have a sock-ball fight.

10. Let alter egos act out. Make sock or bag puppets, give them your quirkiest qualities, and then put on a puppet show.

3. Fun with flour. Make something that involves kneading; like bread, rolls or pizza dough. 4. One-legged kangaroo. Spend an hour hopping on only one foot every time you move around the house. 5. Soften their falls. Put on layers of soft, stretchy clothes and play Twister in the kitchen. 6. Set a world record. See how long you can toss a soft ball back and forth without dropping it even once. 7. Stretch for it. Have a headstand or a handstand contest. Who is the straightest, who can last the longest, and who is the most poised? 8. Colorful awe. Look up group games that can be played with a silk parachute (a silk parachute is also helpful in fort construction). 9. Strike a laugh. Take turns playing yoga teacher and making up silly yoga poses. Not

11. Have a competition. Make a foursquare court in the garage using painter's tape and then take turns playing. 12. Find your inner Picasso. Tape large pieces of drawing paper up on the walls, spread newspapers on the floor, and create self-portraits with chalk pastels. 13. Play charades. Make sure the clues are appropriate for all ages. Or, if you prefer, try Pictionary instead. 14. Take that, Villain! Act out a scene from a family-favorite book. Look up some fight choreography online and stage a mock-fight. 15. Climb, jump, and hop. Create an obstacle course. Time everyone's results. Then try to beat your best time. (See sidebar for more ideas.) 16. Mess around with beauty. Make facial masks out of bananas or avo-

cado and take turns giving them to each other. 17. Get inspired. Watch “The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe, and then draw what you imagine you would find on the other side of your hidden doorway. 18. Bonsoir, Madame. Create a simple meal from a foreign culture like France, India or Africa with ingredients you have on hand. 19. Start a band. Make music with either real instruments or whatever you can create with what you have on hand. For even more fun, try a marching band. 20. Musical fingers. Fingerpaint to different kinds of music. Let everyone choose a song and then compare the resulting images. Which music helped to create the most inspired paintings? 21. Instant nostalgia. Make playdough and then recreate a miniature scene of your home. 22. I say potato, you say potahto. Break out the potatoes, cut them in half and carve the cut ends into stamps. Then transform leftover brown bags into recycled wrapping paper. 23. Trashion passion. What's in your recycle bins? Divide it up into two teams, mix in some plastic and paper bags, set a timer for one hour and see who can whip up some runway magic for a quick trashion runway show.

24. Lip-sync battle. Everyone picks their favorite tunes and then battles it out on whatever kind of "stage" you can create. For extra fun, video the numbers and cut some short clips together into a compilation.

25. Sculpture magic. Go through your art supply cabinets and drawers and pull out everything you can bear to part with. Be sure to include sticks, wire or string. Then see who can create the most original sculpture using supplies on hand.

Heart Hand Warmers By Lady DIY

This is a great activity for cold-weather months, and a fun project for those that are new to sewing. Materials: Felt* Embroidery floss* Rice Heart template, approximately 3.5 to 4 inches wide (I found mine by using the internet search “heart template,” but you can also draw your own!) Sewing Needle Scissors Funnel *Felt and embroidery floss can be purchased at your local craft store. Felt can be purchased in 9” x 12” rectangles—you don’t need much for this project!

Let’s Get Started: 1. Using your heart template, cut out two felt hearts for every Heart Hand Warmer you plan to make.

4.

2. Place the two felt hearts together, with all edges lining up. 3. Thread the needle with about 18” of embroidery floss, and knot the end. 4. Starting on one of the straight edges, sew the edges of the heart together, using a simple whip stitch: push your threaded needle up through the bottom and the top layer of felt. Loop the needle around and push it up through the bottom and top layers of felt again, about 1/8” from the first hole. Continue to work your way around the edges of the heart in this manner. 5. Stop sewing when you have about a 3/4” opening. (Don’t cut your thread—you’ll use that to finish sewing after you’ve added the rice.) 6. Insert the funnel into the opening. Pour in the rice and use your fingers to work it into all of the nooks and crannies of your heart. I used about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of rice. 7. Remove the funnel and sew the opening shut. Tie a knot and cut off the remaining embroidery floss.

6.

8. Your Heart Hand Warmers are done! Pop in the microwave for about 30 seconds* each, and they’ll stay warm in your pocket for about 30 to 45 minutes. *Depending on the size of your finished Heart Hand Warmer, you may need to add or subtract time.

FAQs for Parents Considering Private School Education By Nora Heston Tarte When it comes to a child’s education, few subjects are more heavily debated. Weighing the benefits of a private versus a public institution, as well as the associated costs, can be overwhelming to say the least. Take into consideration, no school (public or private) is the same, and it’s nearly impossible to make a quick decision. Consider all options and consider budget, the individual student and family dynamic. There will be pros and cons to every decision; explore your possibilities. Some private schools may have what your child needs, while others may not. As you start your research, we’ve rounded-up a few FAQs for parents considering private school education—but, be sure to visit Sacramento Parent’s Annual Private School Guide to quickly access your local options.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE APPLICATION PROCESS BEFORE I GET STARTED? There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to educational institutions—or at least not many. Private schools tend to be more varied than public schools. For this reason, parents should always visit a campus with their child before enrolling. Call the office, discuss pricing and if it’s a fit, visit. Then, the application process starts. Testing may be required for private schools and children and parents may be asked to attend an interview. Essays are sometimes required of older students. This is different from public schools, which must take all students who live in the district.

DOES PRIVATE SCHOOL MEAN MORE HOMEWORK? The amount of time spent on homework will fluctuate not only based on school, but also depending on classes, teachers and the child’s work pace. At Carden School of Sacramento, the rule of thumb is children will typically not be assigned more than 15-minutes of homework per grade level each night. For example, a fourth grader may have an hour or less of homework across all subjects, while eighth graders may receive up to two hours nightly. “We follow the same standards that most public schools do,” says Norm Cone, director of Carden School. “In the younger grades, it’s important that we still maintain a joy of learning and ensure kids get enough sleep,” adds Nick Broad, director of admissions at Sacramento Waldorf School. For that reason, students start with 15-minutes of homework per night and steadily build up to two hours per night at the high school level. “You don’t want to stress students out with too much homework, because it leaves diminishing returns.”

WHAT EXTRACURRICULAR WILL BE AVAILABLE TO MY CHILD THAT PUBLIC SCHOOL DOESN'T OFFER? Extracurricular activities vary from school to school and many are the same at both private and public schools. Carden offers both sports and music classes after school and during the day enrichment classes, including foreign language, music, daily physical education and computer lab, are available. While at St. Philomene Parish School, baton, student government, scouting, yearbook and academic decathlon are offered. When comparing, it’s important to look at every school individually instead of clumping all private schools versus all public schools.

DO PRIVATE SCHOOLS FOLLOW COMMON CORE STANDARDS? All public schools in California must adhere to the California Department of Education’s Common Core State Standards. These standards dictate what all students (K-12), will be taught in the classroom. Private schools, however, have the freedom to choose. “We have a phonics-based fundamental curriculum,” Cone says of Carden School. “Most of the parents, at this Carden School, do not want their children doing common core.” At St. Philomene, however, the school is transitioning to common core standards with integrated religious teachings. While Sacramento Waldorf School’s curriculum follows the educational philosophy of Rudolf Steiner.

WILL PRIVATE SCHOOL OFFER MY CHILD LOWER STUDENT-TEACHER RATIOS? In 2015, Sacramento City Unified School District schools continued on page 14 sacramentoparent.com JANUARY 2017 13

Private Education continued from page 13

changed from a 28-32:1 student-to-teacher ratio, to a 24:1 ratio to offer more individualized student attention. These ratios differ among private schools. Carden School reports a 6 to 12:1 student-teacher ratio for K-8 grades, St. Philomene, a 16:1 ratio and Brookfield School, an 18:1 ratio. (All are private K-8 schools.)

WILL PRIVATE SCHOOL HINDER MY CHILD’S SOCIAL LIFE? While there are less children at a private school, there are still opportunities to make lifelong friends. Many private school students will add to their social circles outside of school, through sports, scouts, church, etc. School social functions such as dances vary by institution. When she isn’t chasing her two-year-old son around, she’s musing about motherhood on her blog, www.slightlykrunchymama.blogspot.com.

ABLE Accounts A New Savings Tool for Special Needs By Margaret Heiser Fulton A new type of account, called the ABLE account, gives individuals with disabilities an opportunity to save and invest without jeopardizing their access to needs-based public benefits. ABLE accounts were authorized under the federal Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act of 2014, which allows the states to establish tax free savings accounts to be used by eligible people with disabilities. ABLE accounts are similar to 529 college savings plans in that both types of accounts are administered by the state establishing the program and the funds in the accounts grow free of income tax. However, ABLE accounts have a very different purpose than the college savings plans. An ABLE account is a new financial tool which allows a disabled person who is dependent on public benefits to save and accumulate funds without losing the benefits. Each disabled person’s ABLE account can hold up to $100,000 in total without affecting the beneficiary’s eligibility to receive needs-based benefits such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medi-Cal. Previously, individuals receiving these benefits could only have $2,000 in savings before their benefits would be affected. Now, if a disabled adult has an ABLE account, he, his friends and his relatives can contribute up to a total of $14,000 a year under current law without disqualifying the disabled adult for public benefits. If it is possible for the disabled person to work, he or she can now deposit some of that income in an ABLE account without being concerned about having more than $2,000.

How does the ABLE account work? The ABLE account can function both as a savings account and an account from which withdrawals can be made. If capable, the adult with the disability will be able to open and manage the ABLE account thus enhancing his independence and quality of life. If the disabled person is not capable of handling the account, an authorized third party, such as a parent, conservator, or person acting under a power of attorney, can manage the account on behalf of the beneficiary. Since each state’s ABLE program is self-sustaining, there will be fees associated with this account. To be eligible to open an ABLE account, the individual must have experienced the onset of blindness or the disability before age 26 and meet other disability and severity requirements outlined by the Social Security Administration. The funds in the ABLE account must be spent on qualified disability expenses. The categories of these expenses are intentionally broad, and include education, housing, transportation, healthcare expenses, and more. ABLE accounts do have some limitations. Each disabled individual can only have one account with the annual contribution limitation currently set at $14,000 per year. In addition, if funds remain in an ABLE account upon the death of the account beneficiary, these funds must first be used to reimburse Medi-Cal for benefits received by the beneficiary after the ABLE account was opened. It is possible that California legislation may remove this requirement. Soon, we will have an ABLE program in California. In 2015, the California State

Legislature created the CalABLE Board to implement the CalABLE program. CalABLE accounts are expected to be available in the summer of 2017. The CalABLE Board is now designing the California program and is actively seeking input on program features from potential users. More information on CalABLE is available on the Board’s website at www.treasurer.ca.gov/able. If you want to open an ABLE account now, you can use an ABLE program established in another state. Ohio, Tennessee, Nebraska, and Michigan have ABLE programs and welcome out of state residents. To find information on ABLE accounts in other states, visit the ABLE National Resource Center at www.ablenrc.org. Often, it will be a good idea to use an ABLE account and a special needs trust together. For example, the beneficiary of a special needs trust should not receive direct distributions of cash from this trust. However, the trustee of the special needs trust can distribute cash to the ABLE account and, if appropriate, the beneficiary will have access to the funds in that account and can independently take care of some of her needs. On the other hand, gifts to a person receiving public benefits which are over $14,000, such as an inheritance, should be made to a special needs trust, rather than to an ABLE account. The use of ABLE accounts, especially when combined with special needs trusts, can be complicated. We highly recommend consulting with an attorney or planner with experience in the special needs area to determine which savings options are best for your family.

The Eye Roll Gold Medalist By Pam Molnar

Moms like to brag about their kids. It’s a given. It starts with how long the mother labored and how much her baby weighed. It moves on to the first tooth, earliest walker and those who potty trained before anyone else. And while many of those early stories are amazing, those are things we all do eventually. Moms with high school aged children have so much more to brag about. You see, only a small percentage of people will ever do what their child has accomplished. Varsity team as a freshmen. Perfect score on their ACT. Accepted with a full ride to Julliard. It is impressive stuff and these moms can’t help but share with everyone. I am one of those parents. In fact, I have topped them all. My 17 year-old is a Junior Olympic Gold Medalist in Eye Rolling. Oh yeah. Take that perfect ACT score mom! And you know what? My 15 year-old got the Silver Medal. How lucky am I? I bet you did not even know they had that category in the Junior Olympics. They do. In fact, with so many teenagers vying for the Eye Rolling Gold Medal, the competition is fierce. My girls are truly gifted. They have been practicing the art of Eye Rolling since they were preteens. It was an average day when I noticed my oldest daughter’s talent. We were shopping for clothes and I suggested an outfit that I thought was cute. Out of nowhere, my daughter produced a perfect eye roll in answer to my suggestion. It happened so naturally that it took my breath away. From that moment on, she practiced as often as she could. Whenever I suggested a clothing combination, sang along to a song on the radio or asked for her help, she would work on her eye roll. We were so elated when she felt comfortable sharing her gift in front of her grandparents and of course, her friends. Everyone got to see her impressive eye roll. A few of her friends tried to copy it, but they apparently didn’t have as much support from home to produce the perfect eye roll. I guess it takes the right kind of mother to build that talent in their child.

would have a much bigger audience. It’s hard to explain the beauty of it unless you are in the same room, but I will try to set the scene. Imagine a teenager sitting on the couch with the TV on. She is not actually watching the TV, but instead engaged in something on her phone. Her mother is in the kitchen, mixing ground beef for meatballs. The dog is standing at the back door wanting to go out. The dog barks but the teenager ignores the dog’s pleas. The mother asks her daughter nicely, “Honey, the dog needs to go out and my hands are covered in meatballs. Can you let her out?” And the mother waits. And she waits. The mother repeats the request, a little louder this time. There is no movement from the teenager. The dog barks again. This time the mother replaces the word ‘honey’ with her daughter’s first and middle names. And here it comes. The teen throws her head back for a second before inhaling deeply and sitting up straighter. Her jaw clenches as her eye ball rolls in the direction of the voice from the other room. Without blinking, her eyes come back to center and the teen turns her head toward her mother. Angry to be interrupted while scrolling through Instagram, the teen shoots a final death glare before standing up. Just in case her mother wasn’t looking, the teen lets out a moan that is a combination of disgust and aggravation before stomping her feet as she walks to the back door. Another perfect 10. I am so proud. I wonder if they make an Eye Roll Olympiad sticker for the back of my car.

I really saw my daughter move to the next level when she added the complaint moan. You see, if you‘re not looking at my daughter’s face, you might miss her eye roll. She soon discovered if she moaned in complaint along with the eye roll, she Pam Molnar is a freelance writer and mother of three teenagers. She is fluent in sarcasm, can decipher mumbled words and can halt procrastination with a single eyebrow raise.
