The Ultimate Family Guide to Sacramento Area Resources The Source Book 2015

Dear Readers,

publisher SUE LETO COLE

I’m excited! When I moved to the Sierra foothills (many years ago) it was simply to raise our young family away from the hustle and bustle of the Bay Area. But, if I were to move here today it would be for very different reasons—Sacramento has become so much more than it was 20-odd years ago! New growth and opportunities for families to enjoy a healthy lifestyle are appearing around every corner.

From the addition of the Sacramento Children’s Museum and the beautiful new Crocker Art Museum in recent years, and the state-of-the-art playgrounds that are popping up (Mahany Park in Roseville and McClatchy Park in mid-town are my favorites), to the rich historical sites around town, families can get out and about any time of year. Now, with the new arena in the works, we are seeing downtown be transformed into a thriving community that feels safe and welcoming to families. Plus, since claiming the distinction as the farm-to-fork capital, a plethora of yummy restaurants have opened their doors making date nights a new adventure. The abundance of rivers, lakes and family-friendly hiking trails that surround us, and of course; the short drive to find sun and snow in Lake Tahoe— makes it even sweeter. Enjoy this resource guide, and visit SacramentoParent.com for plenty of ideas for year-round fun, to meet local parents who share their stories of raising kids in our region, and who knows? Maybe you’ll be as thrilled as I am about raising kids in today’s Sacramento!

In the Sacramento area it’s easy to teach our kids that food doesn’t come from the grocery store. We are surrounded by an abundance of farms that raise produce and livestock, and are eager to show the community what they’re up to. We’ve pulled together a list of family-friendly farms; some do tours, others have pick-your-own days and all offer the freshest foods in town. Visit a few and be amazed at how easily your kids will gobble up the healthy foods they chose themselves.

A New Romantic Regimen By Amanda Rinehart

Date nights…something that used to be so easy begins to feel difficult after a few kids. You have to miraculously secure a viable and reliable sitter, pay said sitter, and leave your little darlings behind while you and your hubby head out to do something…well something fabulous, I hope! If you’re going to all the trouble of arranging a much needed night out, let’s hope it’s better than the old “dinner and a movie” schtick. I mean, why go out when you could order take-out and watch some kinda new movie on Netflix? Because you NEED to, that’s why. Sitting on your couch in your pajamas is not the same as getting dressed and heading out to a real adult evening of fun. And, dare I say, that those “precious babies” of yours won’t be babies forever. No sir, before you know it they will be angsty teens, then hopefully they will all go away to college on full ride scholarships. And that means, it will just be you and your spouse most of the time. So foster that relationship now! I’ve lined up four months of exciting, out of the box date nights to get you started on your new, once-monthly, Romantic Regimen.

RECREATE THE FIRST DATE First, let’s think outside the box. I suggest this date is a recreation of the one that started it all: your first date. Where did you go? If it’s not local, then just go somewhere similar. Or, try something you would typically think of as just for kids like putt-putt golf. It’s simple, competitive, and good old-fashioned fun! continued on page 56

see.play.do. DINE AT THE MOVIES For date two let’s re-vamp that tired “dinner and a movie” date. Visit the all new Studio Movie Grill in Rocklin (www.StudioMovieGrill.com). It’s a reservedseat theater that serves and delivers dinner and drinks while you are watching that just released movie! The ticket price is comparable to a regular theater, the food and drinks are reasonably priced, and your seat comes equipped with a call button in case you need another drink or dessert during the show. In addition to the typical concession fare of candy and popcorn, they serve appetizers, salads, sandwiches, pizzas, and entrees like ribs, pasta, and pork chops. The major upside is that in the same time as it takes to watch a movie, you can do a dinner too. This date is multitasking at its funnest!

www.Facebook.com/StudioMovieGrill

THE PERFECT BREW In all honesty, I’m a wine-O. I love wine, cold and crisp white in the summer, big bold red in the winter, and champs any old time. But my hubby is definitely a beer guy. I’m guessing this scenario is not specific to us, that’s why a beer tasting experience is a great idea for your third date. Your hubby could introduce you to something you didn’t even know you’d like and you can both experience new beers together. Where is the best place to do this, you ask? Easy: Community Tap and Table. At Community Tap and Table, Emily is the taste buds behind the gourmet food and Darin is the Certified Beer Cicerone behind the brews. These “Beer Belly Epicureans” work together to pair the beer and food flawlessly and they believe in buying local and creating “slow food” education as well as serving their community through donations to culinary and farm oriented causes throughout the year. On their website (www.CommunityTapandTable.com) they share many of their favorite recipes and pairings, a list of charities and organizations they support, and you can see exactly where they buy their supplies. How refreshingly transparent! In addition to pairings, they offer cooking classes, catering services, brewery tours, personal chef services, beer dinners, a Foodie Book Club, and they have their own cookbook: A Year in Food and Beer.

PAINT AND SIP Now that you’ve showed him that you can totally try and enjoy something he’s into, it’s his turn to try something you like. The fourth date is a paint and sip evening of creativity. Choose one of the plethora of painting possibilities that works best for you. The Painted Cork (Folsom and Sacramento locations), Pinot’s Palette (Elk Grove), and 56

see.play.do. Painted (Folsom) are a few I’ve tried. Once you’ve selected the location, take a look at the painting schedule and pick a painting you like on a day that works for you. Arrive about 15-20 minutes early to get a glass of wine, choose the best seats, get your smock on, and prep your paints. Then, sit down and enjoy the night. I bet you’ll be pretty surprised at what you can create with a little guidance. You’ll be The Painted Cork so busy admiring each other’s masterpieces that you won’t even have a chance to discuss the kiddos at all! At the end of the night, you’ll head home with brand new, conversation starting artwork for your home. All relationships need a little refresh every now and then. It’s so easy to get stuck in the day-to-day grind and investing in your relationship is the most important investment you can make. Just remember, this is the same person you fell madly in love with all those years ago—and chose to have kids with—because you both thought there just wasn’t enough people like either of you in the world. I think you both deserve a date night, so let’s keep your new monthly Romantic Regimen going! SB Amanda is an ex-wedding planner turned stay-at-home mom. She funnels her creativity into her blog, www.MamaMomtourage.com, and into super-fun activities for her kiddos. She lives in Folsom with her husband and their two children. Magical Places for Photographs In & Around Sacramento By Tatyana Tirdea Photography by Nephesh Photography, www.NepheshPhotography.com

As a photographer I spend countless hours scouting for locations via the internet and driving through Sacramento. I check for light, shadows, for accessibility and safety. I load my toddler and my camera in the car and set off for hours and hours of driving. As a result, I have a long list of choices for my clients to choose from. Here are my favorite places to take photos in and around Sacramento.

ELMANTO DRIVE RIVER ACCESS, RANCHO CORDOVA Most people come here to swim in the summer, but that red land, blue water and astonishing “cliffs” make it a gorgeous backdrop for photos.

FAIR OAKS BRIDGE, FAIR OAKS This red bridge is quite popular with photographers, and it is obvious why. It is surrounded by beautiful scenery with tall green trees, golden grass, and a deep blue river that runs through it.

NEGRO BAR, FOLSOM I love this place. Love the boat dock, love the bridge view, and love the cliffs in the background. 62

see.play.do. FOLSOM LAKE, BEAL’S POINT The lighting here was so amazing, it took my breath away! My favorite time to shoot here is at sunset, when the sun is hidden behind the trees and you get a nice pink tone to your pictures that gives people a beautiful creamy complexion. The area includes mini sandy hills (if you compose it just right you can make it look like a huge desert) and a gorgeous view of the lake.

SALMON FALLS BRIDGE, EL DORADO HILLS This has got to be my favorite place to shoot. Flower fields, bridges, streams, hills and rocks = perfection.

EMPIRE MINE STATE PARK, GRASS VALLEY This location is worth the drive. If you like fairytales then this is the place to visit.

WILLOW CREEK RECREATION AREA, FOLSOM A perfect place to capture a fairytale look with many paths and trees all around, a little bridge to be creative with, an island of rocks that create an alluring view, tree logs laying on the ground and a boat dock that can help you get beautiful water shots. continued on page 65

PHOENIX PARK, FAIR OAKS This park has the best golden light. It has an open field of wild grass, fallen tree logs and paved paths to get you there safely.

WILLIAM LAND PARK, SACRAMENTO This is a huge park, with lots of choices. There’s the pond, the outside amphitheater, the rock garden—in other words it’s a playground for photographers.

SAND COVE PARK, SACRAMENTO Who knew Sacramento has a beach? And it’s a gorgeous beach at that. The water in the river is perfect to cool off during the hot summer days.

JENSEN BOTANICAL GARDEN, CARMICHAEL When I first saw this place I felt like I have found gold. The property is well taken care of and there are flowers blooming almost all year round. There’s also different kind of trees and paths and it’s a perfect place to have a picnic, or take some photos. You will need to get a permit to shoot there which you can get by calling their office. But just taking a stroll in the park is free. SB SacramentoParent.com • The Source Book 2015

Thinking Outside the Gift Box

By Shelly Bokman

As the birthday party circuit continues, are you looking for something new and different to get the kids on your list? Rather than toys, or a t-shirt, think about what new activity your birthday boy or girl might enjoy. Here are some ideas of unique places to pick up an out-of-thebox, b-day gift.

* Hardware store – a small tool box,

hammer, wrench and measuring tape, along with some wood scraps make a great gift for an aspiring carpenter.

* Craft/fabric store – a small sewing box,

large needles, felt pieces and embroidery thread will open the door for some creative fun.

* Cooking store – Create a baking kit

with an organic cookie mix, tiny rolling pin, cookie cutters, natural sprinkles, and of course their very own mixing bowl to combine their delicious concoction.

* Sporting Goods store – a pint-sized

fishing pole, fishing net and a can of worms will prepare your little friend for a hours of bonding with a favorite adult.

* Nursery – Grab a flower pot, bag of soil,

and some succulents, veggie seedlings or herbs. Add a small trowel and watering can so your birthday child can enjoy planting and caring for their “garden.”

Baking Kit

* Dollar Tree – when the need for gifts

begins to overwhelm your budget don’t forget this option. You can create a cute themed gift for next to nothing. Try a “hair bag” filled with a new brush, unusual pony tail holders or barrettes, and some sweet smelling shampoo. Or put together a craft bag from their ever-changing array of craft supplies; or try a “day at the park” bag with a Frisbee, a kite, sand bucket and shovel and a bottle of bubbles. Voila! Great birthday gift! SB

Wearable Kid’s Art for a Cause By Shelly Bokman

Robert Thornton, Founder and CEO of Paper Clouds Apparel has combined creativity and entrepreneurship to create an avenue for individuals with special needs to showcase their talents and raise funds for causes near and dear to them. Robert’s mother was a bus driver for children with special needs in Chico, CA. One of the little girls on her route would spend every ride drawing, and then www.Facebook.com/PaperCloudsApparel often gave his mother her artwork. When Robert, a self-professed T-shirt junkie, saw one of the little girl’s fantastic drawings on his mom’s refrigerator the idea for Paper Clouds Apparel (PCA) was born. Paper Clouds Apparel takes artwork designed by individuals with special needs and puts it on t-shirts, hats and totes. The articles are then available for purchase for a limited time at PaperCloudsApparel.com. Fifty percent of the net proceeds from the sale of all continued on page 72 70
