MEET JORDAN:

Sacramento Parent’s newest writer on moving to Sactown and his non-traditional approach to fatherhood By Michelle McDaid

Name: Jordan Venema Children: Cassian, 6 years-old Writer, Jordan Venema is Sacramento Parent’s newest contributor and we decided to turn the tables, putting him in the hot seat to learn more about how he landed in Sacramento, his relationship with his son, Cassian, and how he became a writer. “It’s weird being on the other end of this,” Jordan begins before continuing to try and disqualify himself as an appropriate interviewee for the magazine. He self-describes the parenting style that he and his ex-wife, Jenny, share as “non-traditional", having mutually decided to separate some time ago. “My ex-wife and I, we were married very young,” he explains. “At some point we just realized that we were two completely different people with completely different interests and so we decided

that it would be in our son’s best interest if we separated. Some people say they stay together for the kids, we decided we wanted to do the opposite: to model for our son what it meant to be happy individuals. And we felt that, to do that, we had to pursue our own happiness separately.” Jordan and Jenny’s divorce was amicable, making their own custody arrangements outside of the courts. Theirs is a co-parenting relationship that works well, with Jordan following his ex to Visalia and now Sacramento to ensure Cassian can spend time regularly with both of them. “It just so happens that, with her work, she moves more. I know that if the tables were turned and I ended up moving somewhere, she would entertain the idea of moving as well,” he says. “We do have a great relationship, with our son being the focus. I have the key to her house and she has the key to mine.” Cassian and Jordan both share a love for detail. A typical afternoon home from school looks like Star Wars LEGOs strewn across Jordan’s midtown apartment floor,

father and son sprawled-out beside one another zooming spaceships through the air. Cassian builds the complex LEGO characters almost without any help from his dad, who was a big LEGO fan as a kid, too. “Being a parent, play is sort of enforced,” Jordan muses. “You have to stop and play. I don’t think a lot of us realize how important play is and I really try to make time for that.” When they’re not building extra-terrestrial worlds out of plastic, they play

On the bookshelf right now is The Chronicles of Narnia. “That was a really important book to me as a kid,” Jordan remembers, “My mother read it to me at a young age.” They’re currently on book two, and Prince Caspian, which Cassian is excited to hear, sounds a lot like his own name. Having been in Sacramento just a few short months, Jordan is still trying to find his place in the local community but he’s finding that being a dad and a

writer helps. “Sutter’s Fort is right across the street from Cassian’s school and I think I’ve been there eight times since we moved here,” he says, laughing. “Cassian loves Sutter’s Fort and I love midtown.” “Sacramento might be a valley town, but I came from more of the south valley and it’s much more cosmopolitan here, he shares. “I’ve got my coffee shop that I love to write in and where everyone’s gotten to know me now. I walk or bike everywhere. There are museums. There

were no museums where I lived before. And I’ve been really fortunate in these few months to have been given the opportunity by local magazines, like this one, to be introduced to Sacramento.” Jordan adds, “I’m getting to see it, to learn about it, through the articles I’m writing.” Jordan actually came to writing almost by accident. Visalia to be near his son and struggled to find even a basic service job. “You come away with your Master’s degree thinking everybody’s going to be dying to hire you, but it took me five months to get a job as a barista. It was really disheartening.” It was then that he was invited to write an article on his experiences in a Kenyan school he volunteered at for several months. It took him a couple of tries before he could really bring himself to pen anything about the heartbreaking conditions he experienced there. But, once he found the words, his

story was published and received great feedback. Before Jordan knew it, he was being asked to write regularly for the publication which, in turn, led to other, various writing opportunities. “I don’t have an education in journalism, but I’m really drawn to stories,” he says. “I thought what I could do was just talk to people, have a good conversation, find out their motivations and then turn that into a story.” Since he arrived in Sacramento Jordan has written for Sacramento News & Review and Inside Publications, as well as his first article for Sacramento Parent which appeared in the February

issue, another in May, and this issue too. “When I came to Sac I thought that maybe this was an opportunity for me to really take my writing seriously. And that it’s a really easy way to get involved in the community. IF I COULD CHOOSE ANY SUPER-POWER I’D PICK… “the ability to learn anything quickly, kind of like how BayMax the robot did in Big Hero 6. I’d love to learn martial arts or about something in history just by scanning it really quickly. That would be cool.”

THE BEST DECISION I EVER MADE WAS… “I honestly can’t say. I feel like so many little things that we do and so many little decisions that we make day-in and day-out accumulate in ways that we can’t even comprehend. And so, I don’t know if I have one defining moment in my life. I think that there’s just a daily persistence, just trying to pursue things that I love and be around the people I love. It’s a culmination of little moments and little decisions.”

BEING A PARENT HAS TAUGHT ME... “a lot about humility and hard work. Until my son was born I didn’t take things very seriously. Having him, not as just a responsibility, but as somebody I want to have every kind of opportunity possible, made me realize that so much more was at stake. It didn’t bring a panic into my life but it brought a kind of, ‘now the rubber meets the road’ thinking. After the article on juicing last month, Raychell and I were inspired to give an all juice cleanse a try. I had been feeling a little run down, not sleeping well, and relying on Dutch Brothers and grab-and-go snacks just to get through the day. Raychell, is by far the healthier eater of the two of us, but with some health issues, she was ready for a juice cleanse to detox and rejuvenate. RAYCHELL’S CHALLENGE: “CLEANSE 2” (2 DAYS, ALL JUICE)

Day 1

I miss my coffee. Warm lemon water is pretty good— but, it’s not coffee.

Eek! The headache has kicked in. Trying to concentrate has become a challenge—on a positive note, Greens 3 is super yummy with spicy ginger—and it’s filling. I’m feeling a bit nauseous and the headache is holding strong. But, it’s on to Juice 2, and it’s a nice contrast to the Greens 3, refreshing and sweet. As I’m sipping on the green chlorophyll water, I’m surprised that I don’t mind the taste. Okay, I’m tired… so tired. Must nap now…

I took a nap after work, which helped my headache. I’m still pretty tired, but I’m not hungry.

Day one wasn’t as easy as I expected, but I made it! I wasn’t hungry at all. No hangry tantrums and it feels good to nourish my body and give my digestive system a rest. Day 2

Hooray! My headache is gone and I’m feeling motivated for day 2.

The warm lemon water is even better than yesterday—I’m ready for Greens 3–let’s do this!

Still no hunger, but my headache is slowly creeping back! I’m feeling better than yesterday, but I have to admit, I’m tired and a bit achy.

Overall, all of the juices are great (grapefruit and mint is delish)! I’m happy that I was able to complete this 2 day cleanse. I had more energy on day 3 and would definitely do it again. THE DAY AFTER It works! We both felt great today and we also both stuck to warm lemon water in the morning instead of coffee. I wasn’t famished when I woke up, but I had a salad for breakfast, yep—I thought I’d want a hard-boiled egg—but a salad was what I was craving. Raychell broke the fast with a breakfast smoothie. I even lost three pounds (which I was totally not expecting since the juices totaled over 1,500 calories per day). All in all, we’re both feeling refreshed and inspired to be mindful about what we’re eating and we plan to keep up the increased hydration and continue to try to drink a gallon of water each day! As for the all juice cleanse experience, we’d both do it all over again... eventually!

The Poodlums: Rockin’ Music Therapy

The Poodlums break down musical equipment as children approach them shyly. “I just wanted to say you guys did really good,” one fan tells Anne, while another asks Jason if she can touch his guitar. Even after a 45-minute, middleof-the-day, height-of-afternoon-heat performance, Jason doesn’t skip a beat. “Sure,” he smiles, “go ahead!” The April 30 Colonial Heights Library concert didn’t attract the largest crowd, didn’t garner media headlines; there were no synchronized lights or fog machines, but that didn’t stop the audience from clapping hands and stomping feet. Otherwise, they sat cross-legged, just out of reach of the two rock stars who pulled props from their trunk faster than a magician can pull a rabbit from a hat. Like Beyoncé or Gaga, The Poodlums put on a true performance, and an outfit for every song. They donned pirate hats and eye patches, aprons and oven mitts, and umbrellas attached by headbands. The married couple just as well could call themselves The Band Of Many Hats, but went with Poodlums instead, a name inspired by their pet dogs. “Basically we have two standard poodles and they act like hoodlums. So Poodlums,” Jason says matter-of-factly. Murray and Dina even make cameos in their

shows, though stuffed animal versions, they are brought to life with some pretty impressive amateur ventriloquism. The board certified music therapists began writing music in 2007 after a music therapy program at Alta California Regional Center lost its funding. “That program kind of tanked after the economy crashed,” says Anne, “so we thought this is a really great way to reach out to the little ones, to be able to write songs that are educational.”

And while The Poodlums actively write educational songs with special needs children in mind, “it also turns out a lot of kids without special needs like it, too,” says Anne. And if you’ve caught a Poodlums performance, you’d understand why. continued on page 20

So Anne and Jason began writing songs incorporating the principles of music therapy, songs that encourage motor participation and coordination with rhythm and beats. “People with special needs really respond to music because the rhythm actually organizes motor output,” explains Anne. “All those things”—like clapping, stomping, jumping to music—“help create new pathways in your brain.”

The couple’s chemistry is downright infectious. Jason’s elastic expressions and exaggerated gestures regularly get kids laughing—even parents. At the Colonial Heights Library show, Jason even had his wife in stiches, proving these two aren’t just performing, they’re also having fun. Jason admits, “the idea is to make [music that] doesn’t drive the parents crazy, too, because if your kids are listening over and over then you’re going to have to hear it, too.” The couple could probably say the same for themselves, since they’ve been performing the library circuit, week on week, year after year. And to bring consistent quality performances to an audience of mostly toddlers, well, The Poodlums certainly can’t be accused of being in the business for fame and fortune. They’re in it for the kids. “I feel so close to the people I work with in music therapy,” says Anne, who writes many of The Poodlums songs for her students. “We call those kids, our kids. They feel like our children.” Between their students and audiences, then, The Poodlums are essentially the largest surrogate parents in the music industry. And the sincerity of the relationship between band and audience is especially evident after their shows, as kids shuffle step their way to talk with the band, and say hello.

“We always feel that if we get hugs from the kids afterwards, that means it was a good show,” says Anne. It also probably means the kids had fun, which The Poodlums make a priority. “I want them to have fun, enjoy themselves, and hopefully if this is their first experience with music, it will stick with them,” says Jason. “We also hope they’re having fun learning,” adds Anne. “Because when you’re having fun, you don’t notice you’re learning, and that’s when you learn best.” On this particular afternoon, The Poodlums played a smaller crowd, maybe 20, though no less enthusiastically than when they’re playing back-to-back shows in front of crowds of about 200 kids and parents.

The Poodlums command a bit of a following in El Dorado Hills, which Jason says is cool since “some of the kids show up in pirate hats or hot air balloon dresses”—the same props The Poodlums incorporate into their shows. But large crowd or little, The Poodlums are just doing their thing, which seems to come naturally, organically, easily. “The only tough thing,” admits Jason, “is doing all the set up and break down.” But he laughs, suggesting that maybe, just maybe, when their fans get older, some will volunteer to become roadies. In the meantime, The Poodlums will keep writing fun, educational music for the kids. They have an album available, and they’ve just released a DVD with music videos, too. “And we are definitely ready to put out a new album soon,” hints Jason. But if you want to hear the new songs now? “That’s why you have to come to the shows,” says Jason. New songs or old, The Poodlums practically promise an unforgettable performance, the kind that neither parent nor child could possibly outgrow. For some parents planning a child’s birthday can be blast, while others find it to be utterly stressful and dread the simple thought of it. Whether you are hosting an intimate gathering or an over the top, luxurious event, there are some simple planning steps that can be utilized to ensure that your event goes off without a hitch and is truly a memorable, stress-free experience…for all the right reasons!

Determine Your {Realistic} Budget

First things first, you need to sit down and set a budget. This is going to affect your planning in a crucial and realistic way. You can finally answer the questions that are swarming your head: home or venue, cater or not to cater, custom invitations and décor or a complete DIY? Once you know how much you will be investing, you can begin your planning process and start sourcing the proper necessities.

Create a Guest List

Are you inviting a few friends from your child’s class or the entire class? Will your extended family be attending? How about the children’s parents? Be sure to physically write down your list with two columns: one for children and the other for adults.

Pick a Theme

Create a separate online folder online, which entails all your lists, documents, scanned receipts, phone numbers, etc. If you hired vendors, make sure the contracts are all in that file that clearly state what will be supplied on the day of your event. If you remain organized, you will feel more in control when the day of the event arrives.

Very important! You might have a flow of the event in your head; however, writing things down is crucial. This timeline is going to consist of everything that takes place at your party from beginning to end. Follow it as a guide to refer to; however, you must be flexible and able to adapt if certain highlights take a bit longer. P.S. Don’t forget to include at least 3 hours for set up time!

It’s taken you months to plan this event, so be sure to enjoy it! It is definitely worth it to hire some extra help to oversee the event, so you can spend your time with the guests. Soothing the Stings, Bites, and Burns of Summer By Ashley Talmadge Ahhh, summer! The joy of being in the great outdoors seems endless. Yet, the season also brings an abundance of biting insects, harsh sunrays, and rash-producing plants. When exuberant squeals turn into screams of pain, most parents are well-versed in the standard treatments: ice, OTC pain relievers, lotions, and antihistamines. But with a “kick in” time of up to 30 minutes, many parents wish for faster relief than these standbys provide. The good news? Simple home remedies can be used alone or in conjunction with the standards for great results. Even better, most kitchens hold a treasure trove of quick-acting treatment options. Naturopathic doctor Michelle Rogers of Earth Friendly Medicine explains, “The main advantages include fewer side effects, supporting the body’s natural ability to heal itself (which is essential for the maturing immune system), cost effectiveness, and decreased environmental impact.” Here are some household remedies for treating the unavoidable stings, bites, and burns of summer.

BEE, WASP, AND HORNET STINGS. A bee stings once, but leaves its stinger behind. Remove the stinger as quickly as possible. More venom is dispensed the longer the stinger is in the skin. Wasps and hornets do not leave their stingers behind and may sting multiple times. Leave the area before starting treatment! Make a thick paste using water and one of the following ingredients: • Baking soda • Meat tenderizer (contains papain, which is said to break down proteins in the venom)

• Charcoal (the activated form is clean- est, but charcoal from a campfire can be used in a pinch) • Honey (unpasteurized contains anti- bacterial agents) • Dirt/mud • Toothpaste (undiluted) Apply directly to the wound. Leave on for 20-30 minutes. …Or, try one of these plant-based items: • Sliced onion

Rogers warns that “when it comes to stings, it is always essential to rule out anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction) before turning to our home remedies.” Other severe medical conditions may also warrant treatment by a medical professional. Call 9-1-1 immediately when any of these symptoms are present: • Skin reactions (hives, itching, flushing) in areas other than the sting site • Swelling of the mouth, throat, and/or tongue • Difficulty breathing • Weak and rapid pulse • Dizziness • Nausea or vomiting • History of dangerous reactions to stings (even if symptoms are not present)

OTHER REASONS TO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION: • Multiple stings—when a person (especially a child) has been stung more than 10 times • Mouth stings (lips or inside mouth)— the airway may be affected if swelling is not reduced quickly • Mosquito bites resulting in severe headache, neck stiffness, or disorien- tation may indicate West Nile Virus • Blistering sunburn covering a large portion of the body • High fever or extreme discomfort • Failure to begin healing after several days

• Papaya (a natural source of the papain found in meat tenderizer) • Plantain (a common backyard weed) ground into a poultice Leave on the wound for about 20 minutes.

Itchy bug bites. Many of the remedies used for stings (e.g. baking soda, charcoal, and onion) may also be used to treat itchy bites from mosquitoes, horse flies and black flies. Additional remedies for itching include: • Oatmeal bath • Aloe cream (refrigerated for better itch relief) • Green tea bag (dampened and refrigerated) • Tea tree oil, witch hazel, or alcohol (including hand sanitizer) • Basil, crushed (repels mosquitoes and contains anesthetic properties) • Mouthwash with menthol (cools the bite site)

SUNBURN. A cool bath is often the best way to relieve sunburned skin. Many believe in the addition of oatmeal, baking soda, or vinegar as a soothing agent. After a soak, try one of these home remedies: • Aloe (best straight from the plant, but pre-made lotions are helpful) • Shaving cream • Milk or yogurt • Potatoes (pulverized to a liquid, dried on the skin, and showered off) • Corn starch (dusted on non-blistered areas irritated by clothing straps or bands)

POISON IVY, OAK, AND SUMAC. To prevent a skin reaction, plant oils must be removed within an hour of exposure. Dish and laundry soaps break down oils better than regular hand soap. Gently

lather and rinse with cool water several times. After the onset of a rash, a cooling bath can work wonders. Oatmeal and baking soda are, again, great anti-itch additives. Other soothing agents to try include Epsom salts, buttermilk, and mint tea. After you dab the rash dry, apply one of the following to dry the outbreak and speed healing: • Paste of oatmeal, baking soda, or vinegar • Water melon rind • Cucumber slices • Lemon slices • Banana peel • A bag of frozen peas placed on the rash site is the ultimate in cooling relief!

HOW TO MAKE AN OATMEAL BATH 1. Measure about a cup of unflavored oats per bathtub of water. Instant, quick-cooking, and old fashioned oats all work well.

2. Grind the oats to a fine powder, using a coffee grinder or food processor on the “high” setting. 3. Test your powder by adding a spoonful to a cup of warm water. It should make the water look “milky” and feel “silky.” If there’s a lot of sediment, you need to grind it more.

This month, in honor of Father’s Day—we bring you a quip for Dads!

TIP #3: BARTENDER! FILL MY SIPPY CUP “Hey Bartender, do you mind filling up this sippy cup?” The big game is here. Okay, it’s not the big game—but, it’s a game. And, you can’t even remember what hairstyle you were sporting the last time you actually got to go to the bar for a sports Sunday. These days, your game days are spent on a pee wee soccer field trying to coerce your little cherub into not accidentally hanging themselves on a soccer net. But guess what, Mommy’s not here this weekend and your child’s super adaptable. So... “Sorry Coach, we’re not feeling too well today.” Then, you run through the list... Diaper bag, packed. Binky, check. Sippy cup, locked and loaded. Game on! You don’t mind the stares. You have to expect people are going to look when a grown man walks into a bar wearing a marsupial like pouch filled with a wide-eyed two-year old. But, what you’re not expecting is to be judged by a guy who just finished pouring a tray of “Buttery Nipples.” So, when he refuses to refill your sippy cup with two percent because “you brought a child into a bar?!”, you accuse him of being an ageist, right? Wrong.
