Watts Up Around the World Meet Rocklin family, the Watts, as they set out for a yearlong vacation! By Amber Pryor
THE BIG DECISION Retired firefighter Ian Watts and his wife, Gina, a nurse at Sutter Roseville Hospital, have what many would consider to be a wonderful life. Fit and well established, these active and hard-working fifty-somethings own a well-furnished home in Rocklin, nice cars, enjoy travel, and are raising two boys—one who is heading off to college and the other who will be beginning sixth grade. Yet, after an extended visit from Ian’s parents last year, the Watts have decided to leave the comforts of home and material possessions in search of a new normal for their future. “My parents, who are in their eighties, stayed with us for four months and they were consumed with doctors’ visits and settling into a new place, albeit temporary, and it got us thinking,” said Ian Watts, “What are we doing with our lives?” 12 JUNE 2016 sacramentoparent.com
“We’ll be 80 soon enough,” said Gina Watts, “we are living day to day, burdened by stuff. We just started asking ourselves, what are our goals? What is ahead of us?” Beginning in March 2015, the answers started to come together and they began to form a plan; they would sell a majority of their belongings, roadschool their youngest son, eleven year-old Kieran, and for thirteen months would enjoy ‘summer’ around the world.
READY, SET, JET With tickets to fly to London early this month, the Watts have sold their home, cars, and a majority of their possessions. “We are minimalizing and peeling back this layer of life,” said Gina. “We will each have a duffel pack, small backpack and essential electronics for the next thirteen months.” The rest of their belongings will be placed into a two-bedroom storage unit, with plans to return to the area and eventually own a home again. However, even those plans could change. “This transition is going to give us a chance to reboot and plan for what we want our future to look like,” said Ian.
In preparation for their journey the Watts have turned to the Internet for inspiration and advice over the past year; relying heavily on travel blogs like Nomadic Matt and BootsnAll for pointers and planning guides. “We have been following a yearlong preparation calendar which tells you what you should accomplish each day,” said Ian. In addition, they have connected with and have followed other families who have had similar adventures. They made a connection with one family in the UK via the online site, TrustedHousesitters. “This site connects you with folks looking for housesitting,” said Ian. “All you do is pay $100, submit a background check, and if you are selected you stay at a home for free, while taking care of the house and animals.” The Watts will be staying at the UK family’s home about two months into their adventure and hope to have more opportunities to housesit for other families as they build-up their TrustedHousesitters’ references. In addition, they plan to use services like Airbnb, Wimdu, and imoova to find other accommodations and transportation throughout the year. The Watts have several guidelines to their travel, but have left a majority of the journey open to change. They plan to return for Kieran to begin his seventh grade

year in Rocklin, they have a few friends and family members they are meeting along the way, and they intend to only visit places with warmer temperatures, as to not have to pack for inclement weather. Their itinerary is very general—a list of 22 different transitions between major locations, with no firm dates outside of the first couple of months. “We will begin our trip visiting London, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and then back to England, for our extended housesitting stay in Ipswich,” said Ian. “With Spain, Portugal, and Italy following.” “We will then spend about a month in Thailand and meet my sister in Siem Reap, Cambodia for a short visit,” said Gina, “It’s our plan to be in Australia for Christmas and New Zealand by February.”
FEAR FACTORS For such a large endeavor the Watts have few fears. “Making the money last,” said Gina, when asked about her biggest concern. Yet, Ian was quick to dismiss the concern and said he is confident their finances will last the duration of the trip. Eleven-year-old Kieran shared, “I didn’t want to leave at first because I wouldn’t be able to see my friends.” However, his fear is being slowly replaced with new enthusiasm about all the opportunities to come. “I get to learn about different
places by being there and not just by reading about them or seeing them on TV,” said Kieran. With regards to Kieran’s learning, planning for Kieran’s sixth grade education has been an ambiguous, and at times, challenging part of the family’s preparations to leave for the school year. With plans to roadschool Kieran, Gina has spent countless hours trying to find guidance from Kieran’s school and district on how to best approach the process. “No one at the district has been able to give us a clear answer on how this will affect his entry back into seventh grade when we return.” said Gina. “We just keep getting referred onto the next person.” “Our impression is they [the district] don’t really support this decision and it’s clear that there is no plan in place to encourage families like ours,” said Ian. With the lack of guidance, Gina has turned to homeschooling advocates for advice and has researched many online options for Kieran’s sixth grade education. “The parents and programs I have spoken to in the homeschooling community have advised we stay on top of
Kieran’s math, by using online resources like Khan Academy and Time 4 Learning,” said Gina. “Also, we will be using frequent visits to museums and historical sites to address Social Studies and journaling for English.” Ultimately, the Watts feel comfortable with their approach, believe Kieran’s education will be enriched by this experience, and are not concerned this will negatively affect his return to Middle School in the fall of 2017.
EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME The predominant emotion shared by the Watts as they prepare to embark on this next chapter is one of excitement. For each of them, there is certainly a different experience they are most looking forward to. For Gina and Kieran it’s the opportunity to see so many new places. “I’m looking forward to seeing all the amazing landscapes and experience what Continued on page 15 sacramentoparent.com JUNE 2016 13

I have only read about in books,” said Gina. And for Ian, it’s the people they will meet along the way who are the biggest draw for him. “I look forward to meeting people in each country and being a part of their lives for as long as they will let us,” said Ian. To help ease Kieran’s concerns of being away from friends and for the family to stay in touch with loved ones and friends, the Watts plan to frequently update a travel blog and use all the latest technology to stay in touch. They also are inviting anyone who is interested in their travels or in planning an extended trip of their own to sign-up for updates at WattsUpAroundTheWorld.com/ or to Like their Facebook page at www.facebook.com WattsUpAroundTheWorld/. A Howlin’ Good Time at So-Cal’s New By Shannon Smith
School’s out for summer! And, while there’s a ton to do in and around Sacramento— isn’t it nice to get out of town at least once over summer break? So, wherever shall you go? Well, since the Southern California weather is great and it won’t break the bank to get there (especially if you drive), it’s no wonder many families book it down south in the summer. But, are you going to take another trip to the “happiest place on earth”—maybe it’s time to mix things up? If you haven’t heard, there’s a new option that’s all about family and it’s called Great Wolf Lodge. (Bonus: you can easily shuttle over to hang with Mickey and pals for a day, too—since Great Wolf Lodge is just minutes away from Disneyland!) However, a few days at GWL equals a few days of fun for the whole family—you literally don’t need to go anywhere once you’ve entered the parking garage! Okay, so while it’s an affordable vacation destination, the
drive can be a little long for the kiddos. Pack plenty for the kids to do in the car, it will take about 6.5 hours from Sacramento. At check-in the entire family will get wolf ears. Wear them with wolf pack pride! You’ll see these ears adorning families throughout the resort. You’ll also each receive a wristband, too. This not only gives you unlimited access to the indoor waterslides (free for hotel guests), but the adult bands have the room keys loaded straight into them and you can charge food and items to the card that you leave on file at the front desk. This was a nice feature, no need to worry about where to put your keys and wallet while you’re playing! Yep, you read that right, the water park area is free for hotel guests (and only available to overnight hotel guests) so if you can afford to go during
20 JUNE 2016 sacramentoparent.com
the week, the lines at the slides are not bad at all! I do want to take a quick sec to mention the rooms, too. Yes, they do have standard rooms, but if you want to splurge, there are some awesome rooms with log cabins and wolf dens, giving kids (and parents) their own little space to get away. Some of the family fun add-ons: Story Time: Families are invited to gather around in the grand lobby each evening to hear a story about the Great Wolf characters before bedtime. The characters are there for photo opportunities and pj’s are encouraged. Creation Station: Think Builda-Bear, but with the GWL gang. Two stuffed animals and outfits will come to about $100, but you can register your stuffed friend and take him/her on an interactive adventure at stations through-
out the lodge. Plus, it’s a nice keepsake and the kids will have fun “building” their stuffed pal. Ten Paw Alley: Another fun stop for the littler ones, kind of like a kid-sized bowling alley that even has pint-sized bowling balls. Scooops® Kid Spa: A deliciously sweet smelling spa created for kids, complete with ice-cream themed manicures, pedicures and more! The cupcake hair scent is oh so yummy! Bonus: Each service includes a real ice cream treat at Bear Paw Sweets and Eats across the way, where they also make their own fudge. MagiQuest®: Journey to the past in an interactive quest to battle dragons, befriend pixies and use your magic wand in this interactive adventure game that takes place on the first six floors of the resort. The kids will be busy taking part in this magical scavenger
let’s go
Family Attraction, Great Wolf Lodge hunt adventure. You must purchase your wand and activate your quest. XD Movie: Check out movies like “Los Banditos,” five minutes of a thrilling adventure shooting at villainous cowboy ‘bots while on a 4D simulated wild train ride. 24-hour Arcade: A classic arcade with everything you’d expect and of course, plenty of prizes to redeem with your winning tickets!
Howl at the Moon ™Mini Golf: A glowing course, fun, yet not too big and not too small, a great little break from the waterslides. Then, of course, the Main Event: The INDOOR WATERPARK! There’s a 3-level water fort with a giant bucket that tips every 5 minutes (or so), dumping gallons of water on the kids playing in the fort below. There’s a 4-story racing slide where the kids can body surf down the slide on mats, a 360-degree thrill ride, a 6-story funnel slide, a family raft ride, 4-story enclosed tube slides and a wave pool and lazy river (very similar to Sun Splash in Roseville). There’s also a surf simulator, where just watching the wipeouts is quite entertaining! There’s a
pool with a water playground, floating obstacles and basketball hoops and a splash park for the little ones, too! While all of the above are going to increase the fun factor, they are add-ons and only the waterpark admission is included with your stay at Great Wolf Lodge. Although, if you are planning a visit be sure to check with the resort, there are various discounts and bundles available for families. Let’s see… what am I leaving out? Lodging, check. Fun, check. Food, oh yeah, well there’s that, too. GWL has several dining options: a buffet, snack shack type place by the waterslides, a family restaurant, a poolside pub-style place and grab and go sweet spots like Dunkin’ Donuts and a little ice cream parlor. The GWL chef boasts that everything on their menu is locally sourced and there are plenty of gluten free and special diet options, too. Tip: Grizzly Jacks has some tasty options, like their gazpacho, chipotle fish tacos and grilled corn on the cob. So, there you have it. A new California vacay destination to consider this summer if you’re up for a road trip down the excitingly scenic I-5 (LOL)! (Their website is, www.greatwolf.com/southerncalifornia.)

Birthday Parties!
DIY Treat Decoration Station By Michelle Kopkash The week after my son turned five, he began planning his next birthday party—theme ideas, the guest list, activities and yes—even the venue. My daughter, who loves to keep up with her older brother, began planning her birthday in advance as well. For months, they talked amongst themselves about which theme best expressed their personalities. At one point, my son seriously asked if I could rent a komodo dragon for his party. My daughter followed suit by requesting a box full of kittens, hoping they’d be allowed to roam free during her party. I love their thought process. And while my children jumped from idea to idea, one aspect of the party-planning process remained the same: the party craft. Both of them declared early on that they wanted a ‘do-it-yourself treat decoration station’ for their guests, where friends would be allowed to decorate treats with as much frosting and as many toppings as they pleased. Luckily, this must-have party element was easy to agree to because I knew it was guaranteed to put a smile on guests’ faces and keep little hands busy. It also happened to be relatively simple and inexpensive to coordinate.
What you’ll need: • An assortment of unfrosted treats: cupcakes, sugar cookies, Rice Krispies Treats®, brownie bars, you name it. I made the majority of my treats from boxed mixes, but you might prefer to use homemade recipes. Consider using cookie cutters to create shapes that fit the theme of your child’s party: dinosaurs, hearts, mermaids, dogs, bats, whatever. • Toppings: colorful sprinkles, candy pieces, crushed cookies, crushed candy bars, gummy worms and/or themed cupcake toppers. • Two or three different types of frosting. • Individual cupcake boxes so that guests can take their treats home. Michael’s Store and Amazon.com sell bakery supplies. • Keep baby wipes or hand towels nearby to clean frosting-covered hands.
Bakin’ and Makin’ the Bar: 1. Bake an array of treats and place them on fun platters. I decided on chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, Rice Krispies Treats® and brownie bites. 2. When it comes to the topping and frosting options, the more you set out on display at the treat station, the better. 3. Consider using a colorful tablecloth or themed party cover on the table with themed napkins and plates. 4. The day of the party, let the birthday child and party guests decorate their treats any way they like. Encourage them to take the treat home in a take-home treat box. THE BIRTHDAY PARTY DILEMMA:
Choosing a Party Everyone will Enjoy By Jennifer Rodgers
How many kids' birthday parties have you attended in the last year? Were they extravagant affairs or a simple at-home get-together? My kids are eight and almost six and I've been doing the "birthday circuit" for the last five years or so. It seems like once kids turn four, they want to share their party experience with their friends. Both of my children have gone to preschool since three, so they made a lot of friends and we went to many birthday parties, from a party in a park to grandma's living room to fancy places with people serving us food! If you are unsure about how to handle your child's next birthday party, here are some factors to consider:
COST Cost is probably the deciding factor for many of us. Birthday parties typically aren't cheap, especially if you do it at a venue instead of your own home or a park. Total cost varies of course, even if you decide to skip an expensive place, your expenses can still add up—are you getting a bounce house, renting ponies, buying a cool cake (with a big price tag)? If you're supplying food, are you going with pizza (which can be costly if it is from a reputable place that delivers it to you), hot dogs and hamburgers, chips and dip, drinks, organic juice, ice cream to go with that fancy cake? Don't forget those goodie bags (which aren't always necessary). Make a list of everything involved and put approximate prices beside them. We all want our kids to have an unforgettable birthday experience, but if you're going further into debt to do it, then it's time to scale down. I always figured that a party at home would be the least expensive route, but after "doing the numbers," with the number of kids involved, it comes very close to having it a venue instead. 28 JUNE 2016 sacramentoparent.com
NUMBER OF KIDS Invitations can get out of hand if you let them. Ask your child who he wants to invite and make a list. If it starts to be so long that great uncle Samson is getting an invitation mailed to Florida, then it's time to keep it in check. Have a number in your head first then see which friends he names off first. Stop when you get to the total you already decided. And, don't feel bad about keeping it small. At my daughter's first sleep-over birthday party, I told her that she could invite three girls, that's it. For my own sanity I needed to have less kids to look after (so three, including my daughter, would make four to keep the numbers even). Some moms would have up to twelve girls sleeping over! Not for me, thanks. Don't forget to think about yourself during this time. After all, you'll probably be the one doing most, if not all, of the work.
CLEAN-UP Here is where an outside venue is most beneficial, the inevitable clean-up from the party. And, if you have been around young kids, there is usually a lot of cleanup involved. At most places they feed the kids then take it all away, they often take care of all that wrapping paper and packaging (hopefully recycling it), and you get to go home with your child and
the unwrapped presents, leaving everything else to the staff. Sure, you can help by telling all the kids to put their plates in the garbage, not to throw food, etc, but it won't be you looking down at the floor thinking, "I just cleaned this"!
FUN In the end we want our child to have fun above else. It's their birthday, after all, and it's special, so think about your child and what he likes to do most. From what I have seen, most kids are just ecstatic to be with friends and play. Be it outside at a park, in your house, at the local pizza parlor, or a snazzy bounce place—get them together to play for a few hours, and they end up having fun—that's what kids do best. So, let go of the guilt if you don't want, or can't afford, to have a fancy party. Or, if you have only put on big, extravagant parties in the past, consider scaling down on the next one and see how your child likes a smaller, more intimate party, with just her close friends. You never know, she might have wanted that all along. Either way, do your best and try to enjoy the day! Jennifer Rodgers is a full-time mom and parttime writer who lives in the Sierra foothills with her husband, two children, and too many animals to count. In her spare time she can be found reading, knitting, or hiking with the dogs.

Preparing Little Ones for Day Camp Field Trips By Laura Reagan-Porras
‘Tis the season for summer day camp field trips! Camp counselors affirm that well-planned field trips make camp themes come alive by helping day tripper’s associate concepts to real world applications. Parents have a vital role to play. Parents can help drive home learning outcomes, address related safety issues and ensure fun! Field Trip Fact Finding: Parents Can Boost Learning Outcomes Ask your child the following: • Why are you going on this field trip? • What do you expect to see on the field trip? • What do you need to do to prepare for the field trip?
Field Trip Safety Issues: Parents Can Enhance Security
Field Trip Fun: Parents Can Increase the Fun Factor as Cool Chaperones Here are a few suggestions to help boost the fun factor on field trips and avoid behavior issues by keeping day campers engaged. Parents can also help create social learning opportunities. • Use name tags so new parent chaperones learn student’s names quickly. • Have the kids think up nicknames for the parents for their chaperone nametags.
Safety concerns may arise on field trips but preparation can minimize potential problems. Increased adult to child ratios can also minimize safety issues. Therefore, volunteer to chaperone for field trips! If you can’t volunteer there are some things you can do to help keep your child safe on field trips.
• Sing songs on the bus drive to the field trip location.
• Make sure your child knows their contact information (phone numbers, addresses, where parents work)
• Give your child an old-fashioned disposable camera to take their own photos on the field trip.
• Emphasize to your child how important it is that they stay with their group.
• Talk to students throughout the field trip about what their favorite part is.
• Wash their camp shirt ahead of time so your child is wearing the same color as their group.
• On the bus drive back to school, play a sequence game about what students saw first, second, third and finally, last on the field trip.
• Calmly, prepare your child for what to do if they are separated from their group. You may want to make several suggestions, like return to the zoo entrance or ticket office and ask that an adult page your camp counselor over the loud speaker or tell your child to look for a uniformed security guard or museum docent to ask for help in locating the group. • Remind your child to go to the restroom with a buddy or small group. • Play a brief reminder game about “Stranger Danger” and what to do. • Carry a first aid kit.
• Chaperones can ask students what they think they will see when they arrive at their field trip location, while students are riding on the bus.
• Remember to catch students being good and affirm random acts of kindness, such as: Susie, I really like the way you are taking turns. Joey, that was really nice of you to let Max see the exhibit first. Sam, I heard you told the guide, “thank you.” You set a good example! If you can’t join them, be sure to pick up your child from camp on time, especially on field trip day and get ready to hear all the good things they learned and hear about all the cool things they saw.

Should your Special Needs Child Have a Special Needs Trust? By Carol Wyzinski, Esq. Did you know that if parents leave assets directly to the disabled adult child it can disqualify them from receiving valuable governmental benefits? Instead, parents can establish a Special Needs Trust. Even though the primary purpose of this type of trust is to preserve government benefits for a disabled loved one, proper planning should also focus on providing quality of life and achieving as much independence as possible for the disabled loved one. A Special Needs Trust is drafted specifically so trust assets are considered not to be “available resources” in calculating the disabled person’s eligibility for needs based benefits. The funds in the trust may then be used to supplement the disabled loved one’s needs not covered by public benefits without a reduction or elimination of Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Medi-Cal or In Home Support Services (IHSS). A Special Needs Trust can ensure that money will be available for a child throughout their lifetime. The trust is irrevocable in your child’s name once funded. But the trust owns the assets, not the child. It is best to create a stand-alone Special Needs Trust with a pour over provision in the Parent’s Living Trust that allows other family members or loved ones to contribute to the trust. Educating the trustee on how to distribute the funds is critical so that governmental benefits are not lost. A Special Needs Trust can give piece of mind to parents and family members of a disabled loved one for the best possible future.
Carol Wyzinski is an attorney who helps families make sure everything and everyone they love is taken care of the way they would want if anything happens to them. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara and Juris Doctorate from Ventura College of Law. Just like their childhood, summer will be here and gone before you know it. You can send your kids to camp, schedule playdates, plan stimulating visits to educational museums and take day treks to the zoo. But, you should take time to pause and consider just playing this summer, too. Although it may seem counter intuitive to keep a list of possible spontaneous activities to cultivate, but the truth is, many of us simply aren’t good at letting go and having fun. Maybe the list below can spark a discussion with your kids about summer fun—add to the list and go have fun!
1. Wash the car and squirt each other with the water hose. 2. Cook together and don’t worry about the mess. 3. Read books side by side on the porch, drinking lemonade. 4. Sing each other’s favorite songs while watering your yard. 5. Lay down on a blanket outside (picnic-style) and watch the clouds go by, tell each other the shapes you see. Make up cloud stories and praise your child’s imagination. 6. Buy a new box of crayons and draw portraits of each other. 7. Pack a picnic lunch and go to the park to eat. See where the day takes you. 8. Make a bird feeder and sit still outside to watch the birds feed. 9. Tell stories to each other with the listener providing the first line and characters to the storyteller. 10. Make or buy bubbles. Blow bubbles in the backyard.
11. Make your own frozen popsicles with your favorite fruit juices, eat them outside on a hot summer’s day. Let the juice drip down your arms and then squirt each other off with the water hose. 12. Paint something, including each other. Body art is very cool. 13. Turn on the sprinkler in the backyard and run through it, over and over and over again. 14. If it’s too hot to play outside, put on your favorite music and rock out together! 15. Get your groove on and give your kids a spontaneous dance lesson. Show them your dance craze from your schooldays. 16. Play a new version of hide and seek with water guns, when a player is “found,” squirt them! 17. Do chalk art on your driveway or sidewalk together. 18. Wash the dog together and squirt each other.
