Introducing Dr. Jennifer Ryan “We are excited to be working together after 14 years of friendship. We have similar philosophies, and treat our patients like we would our own children.” –Dr. Joelle Speed

Dr. Jennifer Ryan grew up in the Bay Area, where she graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in psychology. She received her DDS degree with highest honors from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in 1997, where she was awarded the Charles Sweet Award for Clinical excellence in the treatment of children. Dr. Ryan completed a three-year residency in pediatric dentistry at the University of California, San Francisco and received both her pediatric dentistry specialty certificate and a master’s degree in Oral Biology in 2000.

Dr. Ryan believes that all cavities are preventable, and strives to provide parents with the knowledge to prevent cavities in their own children. Her philosophy of care is to treat every child the way she would want her own children treated. Dr. Ryan was in private practice in Roseville for eight years, and then in Folsom for the past five years before deciding to come back to the Roseville community. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the California Society of Pediatric Dentists, the Sacramento District Dental Society, the California Dental Association, and the American Dental Association.

Now that it’s officially [too] HOT and summer is in full-swing—what do your kids have on their “To-Do” list over break? I usually try to get mine into a few camps or classes. This year my oldest decided that she wants to start piano lessons (I say finally because our piano has been collecting dust for about 5 years now). And that’s mainly because I didn’t want to have her start lessons until she really showed an interest. I know she’s ready because last year she learned to play the flute in school and I was pumped to see her motivation and dedication to practicing her music. (Even when I thought I’d go bonkers if I had to listen to “Hot Cross Buns” one more time.) Yet, not all kids love practice—if your budding musician is feeling a little less than enthusiastic about putting in practice time—flip to page 24. On a sweet note, we also set out to visit some of Sac areas adventurous dessert destinations this month (I know, tough job—right?). Well, it was a sticky job, but our finds were sweet! Date night, or family treat—who wants to cook in the heat? Maybe dessert is what’s for dinner tonight? (Get ideas on page 10.) Happy Independence Day!

Adventurous Dessert Destinations Edited by Shannon Smith

Whether it’s date night or family night, you can’t beat a cool treat on a hot summer eve! Lucky for us, we’ve got some fantastic choices when it comes to delish desserts. I mean, we all love Rick’s Dessert Diner and who doesn’t think Gunther’s Ice Cream Shop is pretty sweet? The list goes on...but, we set out to try some of our more unique local hot spots serving cool desserts!

THE PARLOR ICE CREAM | SACRAMENTO, 2620 FAIR OAKS BLVD. www.TheParlorIceCream.com Home of Ice Cream Puffs (warm donuts filled with cold ice cream). Yep, they had us at ice cream filled donuts. There’s no limit to the ultimate combinations you can create with their custom ice cream flavors and toppings. We tried a warm glazed donut filled with half “Choco Taco” ice cream (chocolate, nuts and waffle bits) and half “Midnight in Paris” (coffee ice cream with Nutella chocolate swirls). Rich, but tasty for sure. On the wild side, the kid’s choice was a glazed donut with half “Green Machine” (mint ice cream with crushed Oreos) and half “Birthday Cake” ice cream, but they didn’t stop there... they topped it with Hershey syrup, more crushed Oreos and gummy bears! Like I was saying, there’s no limit to what you can dream up!

TAYLOR’S CORNER | LOOMIS 3987 Taylor Rd. (outdoor seating only) or 3636 Taylor Rd. (indoor or outdoor seating) www.Facebook.com/taylorscornerloomis Who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned milkshake? Well, you’re welcome—here’s a place boasting with well over 150 flavors! All of their shakes start with a base of either chocolate or vanilla ice cream and from there, they can add-in just about anything! The most popular shake at both locations is the traditional Mint Chocolate Chip and the staff recommends the Peach and Green Tea (sounds great on a hot day)! We tried Carmel Turtle Cheesecake, Cupcake, Kahlua, Chunky Monkey (bananas, hot fudge and walnuts), and Death by Chocolate, yum. Feeling adventurous? Shake it up with some of their more unique options: Wasabi (yes, people order this), Habanero Lime, Avocado, Pancake, Bear Claw, Fruity Pebbles, and even Twinkie!

fun finds

VAMPIRE PENGUIN | DAVIS, ELK GROVE AND SACRAMENTO 6821 Stockton Blvd., #110 and 907 K Street (Sacramento) 9135 W. Stockton Blvd., #140 (Elk Grove) 130 G St.. Suite C (Davis) www.Facebook.com/VampirePenguin916 Black granite countertops, dracula-like chandeliers and dripping fonts on the menu, create an ambience true to their name. What’s with the name anyway? “Vampire penguin lives in the North Pole because he’s a vampire. His best friend is a walrus (who also thinks he’s a vampire). But, he misses his family, so he continuously rolls flavorful snow to bring other families and friends together.” I asked them to share their most popular shaved snow specialties. The Strawberry Cheesecake Deluxe is one of their most ordered desserts. But, I stepped out of my comfort zone and ordered another one of their popular ones: Halo-Halo with Taro or Milk Tea shaved snow, munggo beans, white beans, taro paste, jackfruit, condensed milk and a touch of flan. The shaved snow is amazing, it’s what I imagine cotton candy would be like as ice cream—cold, light and fluffy turning into creamy deliciousness the second you take a bite! We also tried the “S’moreos” (Cookies & Cream shaved snow, crushed graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate syrup. I think the cleaned plate speaks for itself on what we thought of this one!

PUSHKIN’S BAKERY | SACRAMENTO, 1820 29TH STREET www.PushkinsBakery.com A gluten and dairy free bakery (they’ve also got some tasty vegan treats)—basically, a dream come true for those with food sensitivities.

We couldn’t include them all, but here are a few more that made our list:

BAMBU DESSERTS & DRINKS | ROCKLIN 1240 Sunset Blvd., Ste 100 www.DrinkBambu.com

Recommended: Vietnamese “Chè” desserts and milk teas

DEVINE GELATERIA & CAFE SACRAMENTO 1221 19th St. http://DevineGelateria.com

Recommended: Lavender and Honey Gelato

SNOBITES | ELK GROVE 9170 E. Elk Grove-Florin Rd. www.Facebook.com/pages/Snobites/816306328427951

Recommended: Bricktoast

WILLOW CAFÉ & SWEETERY | FOLSOM 13405 Folsom Blvd., Ste 950 www.WillowCafeandSweetery.com

Recommended: Their Gluten Free Baked Goods

We like that their menu changes-up often. Their Crinkle Cookie is pretty amazing if you love chocolate, it’s a half brownie-half cookie combo, smothered in powdered sugar. They’ve also made the Top 5 for two years in a row on “KCRA 3’s A-List” for “Best Cupcake” and “Best Bakery.”

Saving the World, One Lemon at a Time Meet Hannah…local artist and children’s book illustrator By Christine Quarry

THE NEW CHERRY Usually when you think of a lemon, your mouth puckers and salivates or you expect your car to stop working as soon as you turn out of the sales lot. But, what if lemon was the new cherry? There has been some buzz around town about a sassy little lemon named Lionel who’s making his way in the world, and we think he might be a pretty sweet revolutionary.

Karen and Hannah

LEAPING LEMONS So, what’s the story behind this little sassy lemon? Almost everyone can relate to being bullied or feeling as though your “differences” in the social scheme of things are a little, well, “weird.” Lionel, that sassy little lemon, is here to tell you that those “differences” are exactly what make you special and that “weird” is pretty awesome. “Bullies stifle creativity by targeting kids who are different and scaring them into fitting a narrow definition of cool,” Hannah shares, and Lionel wants to change that. When asked why a lemon, Hannah’s not entirely sure how Lionel became a lemon—but after considering it with Karen—they think it connects back to their lemon tree in the backyard. There’s no question how the name Lionel came to be. The real life Lionel is Karen’s dad. He was born in 1936 and the most important lesson he taught his children was that of tolerance. He spoke of “loving people for who they are, not what they have or how they look,” Karen shares. Hannah grew up as a “tomboy” and enjoyed

12 JULY 2015 sacramentoparent.com

We caught up with Hannah, illustrator of “The Little Lemon that Leapt,” a children’s book that brings the story of Lionel to life. She’s also the artist behind this month’s cover of Sacramento Parent! As for the author, Karen Sanders-Betts just so happens to be Hannah’s mom. Karen always had a dream to write a children’s book and together, they have created a little book that they hope will make a big difference in the world. tromping around in the mud with the boys. She has always been comfortable in her skin thanks to the support she received at home. The message of tolerance and acceptance has been passed down through the family.

We asked Hannah if she had any tips to offer someone with the dream to write/ illustrate a children’s book and she said with enthusiasm, “Just go for it! Don’t rush the process and stay open and flexible to changes.” They used “kickstarter” to earn the funds to create their book and were fortunate to earn enough to print locally with soy based ink, which

We asked Karen to share with us a little about her experience working on the book with her daughter and her words were heartwarming. She said, “Hannah has been the biggest gift that I have ever received, and this journey with her has been a dream come true. I created this book with my daughter and dedicated it to my dad. My entire heart is in these pages.” On the flip side of this duo, Hannah (inspired by the work of Tim Burton) says that she surprised herself by offering to illustrate the book. “I was always doodling and drawing in my notebook, but photography was my main creative outlet. So it was really funny to me when I confidently said that I would illustrate the book,” she laughs. Hannah adds, “It was a double-edged sword because we are so close. We would be blunt at times and occasionally feelings got hurt, but we were able to push each Lionel in 19 58, Hannah ’s grandfath other, too.” er

Hannah says is pretty uncommon, “Not many books are printed locally, most come from China.”

WITH A LEMON ON TOP Keep an eye out in the near future for a non-profit set up by Karen and Hannah to “encourage kids to make stand-out

choices.” The mother/daughter team hope to help children foster an appreciation for their differences and to give everyone the opportunity to feel good in their own skin. It’s called the #ichooseweird movement and their goal is to “help to spread the word that weird is WONDERFUL!”

And following tradition, here are a few lemony snippets:

IF YOU COULD CHOOSE ONE SUPER POWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE? KAREN: Time travel because I love history and there are many places and events that I would like to experience first-hand. HANNAH: Teleportation so I could instantly travel anywhere in the world!

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOWS? KAREN: Breaking Bad’s character development was unsurpassed. Right now, I’m very into Call the Midwife on PBS. HANNAH: Breaking Bad gave me nightmares. I’d have to say Frasier is the wittiest series I’ve ever watched.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE MOVIES? KAREN: I love The Mission because it is a haunting story of forgiveness and redemption with a heart-achingly beautiful score. HANNAH: I never tire of Sabrina. (Both versions!)

FAVORITE PAST TIMES? KAREN: Reading, exploring outdoors, and visiting museums HANNAH: Spontaneous day trips, hiking, and taking time exposures

SWEET OR SALTY? KAREN: Definitely salty! HANNAH: Salty, dipped in sweet!

COFFEE OR TEA? KAREN: Tea, hot or iced. Growing up in Missouri, my mom always had a full pitcher of sweet tea in the kitchen at all times. HANNAH: Coffee (with plenty of half and half) in the morning, tea in the afternoon.

This is just the beginning of Lionel’s journey and we think once you meet Lionel, you’ll be asking for more, pretty please with a sassy little lemon on top. Here are a few places you can find his adventures: Ana Apple | 114 K Street Sacramento F ace in a Book | 4359 Town Center Blvd. El Dorado Hills Spin | 417 Roseville Square Roseville

Christine is an artist currently studying Fine Arts at Sierra College. She is part of the Sacramento Parent team and enjoys writing and sharing her creativity with readers. sacramentoparent.com JULY 2015 13

Teach Tots to Help Others It’s A,B,C,D…Easy! By Ruth Hanley

It’s never too early to demonstrate caring for others. Teach your toddler the joy of giving with simple, fun ideas that let her be a part of making the choices. Creating a tradition to help others once or twice a year will leave a lasting impression. You’ll also be developing habits that can turn into bigger service projects as your child gets older.

IS FOR ANIMAL SHELTERS Your toddler can help the pets in animal shelters by donating food, pet toys, and even old baby blankets. Help her choose the items to donate the next time you’re at the grocery store together. Read the descriptions of pet food to her and show her the pictures on the containers to help her decide what you should buy. Look at the pet toys with her and describe how a pet would play with each one. Include an old baby blanket with your donation to provide the pet a soft place to rest. Make an appointment with the shelter and let your child give the donation to the person in charge. When you call ahead, see if your appointment is at a time when your child can see the animals as well!

IS FOR BABY FOOD Did you know that baby food is one of the lowest inventories in your local food bank? Let your child pick some out to donate and help replenish it! Read the labels on the jars of baby food to your toddler and let her have fun picking out flavors she thinks the babies would like. It will make her feel like a big kid to care for someone smaller than herself. Another donation that is always desperately needed is baby formula, which you can include if your budget allows. Drive your donation to a nearby food bank or find out if your local grocery store has a food bank bin in the store. Choose the most convenient place to donate and let your little one put the food into the bin herself.

14 JULY 2015 sacramentoparent.com

IS FOR COOKIE DELIVERY When you are recovering from an ailment, feeling lonely, or working at a demanding job, a cookie and a bright young face can brighten your day and keep you going. Your toddler can help you create simple treats to give to others. Try making cookies from premade dough or frost and decorate cookies you bought from a store. You may already have a recipe that you and your toddler make together. Deliver the creations to an elderly neighbor, a friend, a relative who has had an operation, or to your local fire fighters! Let your child know that her time with the recipient was as important as the gift, and that she helped someone today by being a friend.

IS FOR DELIVER LETTERS Your child can create greeting cards for elderly nursing home residents or neighbors. The card can celebrate a holiday, or say “Thinking of You.” Let her draw with crayons, markers, pastels, or paint on a folded piece of paper. Cut out their colors, lines, and scribbles into a heart or holiday shape and attach it to the folded piece of paper. Write “Have a Happy Day!” on the inside, or a message of hope and caring. Call ahead to your local nursing home and see if you and your toddler can deliver the card to the residents or take a walk to your neighbor’s house and deliver your card. Let your child know that her card will help them to have a happy day.

IS FOR EMPATHY As the next holiday season approaches look for charitable giving displays to buy presents for families in need. Choose two presents that you would be able to buy. Describe the items and recipients on each tag and let her choose. If she gets upset because she wants the present you picked out, let her know that she can put the same gift on her list of holiday or birthday presents. Tell her that the gift that you are buying will be given to a child who doesn’t Photography by have as many toys as Memories By Michelle she does and describe www.MbyMPhotos.com how happy that child will be to get it. Let her be the one to hand the gift to the person in charge or put it into the bin. Praise her for her generosity because buying someone else a gift that you want for yourself can indeed be a challenging concept to understand when you’re little.

There are so many ways that your toddler can participate in caring for others. These lessons of caring are fun when you keep it easy during these early years. Make sure you pick a good time of day when your little one is at her best and less likely to melt down. If she does seem too fussy or tired, just try again another time. These little acts of kindness develop the strong foundation of a caring and conscientious adult. Ruth Hanley is a parent of two girls, and has facilitated parenting groups for many years. She is always amazed at how much a bright little face can make a huge difference in this world.

Maintaining Harmony with Young Musicians By Heather Lee Leap

Your child wants to play an instrument, you want him to practice, but making it work is not always easy. While practicing is predominantly a solo endeavor, the nature of music is social, and for children to succeed, it should be a family effort. You can’t practice the instrument for him, but you can set the stage for successful training at home. Here are some common complaints about practicing and solutions so your aspiring musician can start creating beautiful music at home before it’s time to get up on the stage: If your child whines and argues about practicing: Remember, it is a rare child who understands delayed gratification. Amanda Lawrence, strings teacher and professional violist says, “Don’t ask them when or if they want to practice.” Instead, let them choose between two times and then help them follow through. Remind your child how far he has come by reviewing songs that have already been mastered. Ask periodically, “Do you remember when that song was so hard?” If you struggle to find time to practice: Save preparation time and avoid procrastination by keeping the instrument accessible, perhaps on a stand or wall-mounted hanger. “Try to find a consistent time to practice each day to make it a habit,” says Lawrence. Do you have an early-riser? His best practice time may be before school. Try breaking the practice into a few short sessions at different times of day. “Even if they are not practicing anything specific, they can just get into the instrument,” Lawrence says. Let go of the assumption that your child has to get through everything in one session—just make sure he covers different material each time. If you’re not sure how to help your child practice: Try asking their instructor to send home specific instructions for weekly assignments. Susan Riggs, a piano teacher for over twenty years, 24 JULY 2015 sacramentoparent.com

suggests asking specific questions about technique or what is required in each piece. Kids like to plow through a piece at top-speed, which is fine–once. Let him get it out of his system, then help him take it apart and focus on tough spots. At home, have your child explain his assignments to you before he begins. This shows him you’re interested and reinforces what he will do in his practice. If your child has trouble staying on task: Sit with him during practice. Work on a craft or pay the bills in the same room, and your young musician won’t feel isolated. This is vital for children under the age of ten or so, to keep them on track, but don’t be surprised if your teen appreciates it as well. Don’t let your presence be a distraction. Consistently help him re-focus and he will gradually settle into a routine. Consistent practice in a supportive environment leads to success, which leads to greater enjoyment and less conflict at practice time. The discipline required to learn to play an instrument will seep into all aspects of your child’s life, building confidence and pride of accomplishment for both of you. Heather Lee Leap is a freelance writer and mother of three young musicians. She has been supervising between three and twelve hours of music practice per week for over seven years.

EDUCATION & ENRICHMENT ON THAT NOTE... We asked a few local professionals to share their expertise on some of the common FAQs parents have about their budding musicians. Serge Lysak of The Drum Lab and Dr. Marcie Grill, mom and Director/Principal of Rio Valley Charter School chimed in with some great tidbits that will help you stay in tune with your young musician: Is there an ideal age for a child to start playing an instrument? How can you tell if your child is ready? THE DRUM LAB: The best time is really when the student is ready and interested in learning. That is when the student is most receptive to learning and most eager to practice their instrument. RIO VALLEY CHARTER SCHOOL: Every child is unique, so I would suggest experimenting and sampling before making a large commitment. Regardless, match your expectations with the age and attention span of the child. Wanting to play as opposed to being forced or pressured into an instrument, can have a huge impact on their success. It’s okay for a child to change interests and instruments as they, themselves, grow and change! Can you offer any advice to help a parent to guide a child in choosing an instrument? THE DRUM LAB: Students will usually voice what instrument they want to try and sometimes that can change. You may want to try taking them to a local music store to check out the different instruments and see which ones they might like. Another great way is to take them to see some live music performances at family-friendly events. They may draw inspiration and develop an interest in a specific instrument. I also think it’s healthy for kids to try out multiple instruments, because this helps them become more well-rounded musicians (and individuals). RIO VALLEY CHARTER SCHOOL: Surround your child with a variety of sounds and experiences. Watch for instrument "petting zoos" in your community events calendar. Don't choose for them—and of course, rent first!

Do you have any ideas to help encourage kids to practice and how to make practice fun? THE DRUM LAB: Don't force it, encourage music and try not to make it seem like a chore. Don't worry about the volume of practice, but make sure it’s consistent. A little practice every day for a few minutes is much better than longer practices with days off. But, if your child does start to feel burnt out, let them take a break for a few days. We all need breaks sometimes. It’s easier to get a child to practice for 5 to 10 minutes three times a day, than it is to get them to sit still for 15 to 30 minutes. RIO VALLEY CHARTER SCHOOL: Remind them that mistakes are part of learning! Take breaks and go back later if it becomes stressful. What tips can you share to keep kids enthusiastic about learning an instrument? THE DRUM LAB: Find a school or instructor that has a great track record, reviews, and learning environment. Make sure they are bonding with their instructor. Having a good instructor in general is a bit of a given, but making sure they’re the right fit for YOUR child. Being a good match is very crucial to how they perceive the instrument and learning it. Play music, often. Also, be proud of their musical accomplishments, as well as the milestones they pass as they grow. RIO VALLEY CHARTER SCHOOL: Intrinsic motivation is more ideal than rewards for practicing and being able to see themselves successful builds efficacy. Take them to live performances and meet the performers! Anything else come to mind, that you want to share with readers? THE DRUM LAB: Music is a very healthy part of a child's development. It goes much further than just playing the instrument. Learning an instrument helps children in many other areas of life like academics, social skills, self-esteem, etc. Even if your child doesn't have a lot of "natural ability" it is still very good and important that they at least try out music for a period of time. RIO VALLEY CHARTER SCHOOL: We are blessed to be in an arts-rich community, and we should all remember to take advantage of it with our children. Rio Valley Charter School's Sacramento Arts Guild program embraces that principle by partnering with community experts and encouraging our students to participate in community arts programs!

Musical Rhythm Sticks By Shannon Smith

Tap and shake your rhythm sticks to keep the beat or rub them together to make a cool cricket sound. We created ours in red, white and blue in honor of Independence Day!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • Large hole wood or plastic beads • Two wooden skewers with the points cut off (or wooden dowel craft sticks that are small enough to fit through the beads) • Tacky glue and tape

HOW TO MAKE THEM: 1. Wrap a piece of tape around the stick toward the middle and slide your first bead on until it reaches the tape. 2. Dab tacky glue around the dowel and the first bead to secure it in place (give the glue a little time to set). 3. Continue stringing your beads in the pattern of your choice until you get about a half inch from the top of the stick (this gives the beads a little room to slide along the stick when shaken). 4. Then, simply use the glue again to secure a bead to the top of the stick and allow time to dry thoroughly. Try starting a parade! They’ll love marching, tapping, and keeping the beat with their colorful and festive rhythm sticks.

Summer Activites for Everyone By Nora Heston Tarte

From sports leagues to science camps, there’s no shortage of activities to keep your children’s minds and bodies busy while on break from school. Sacramento and its surrounding communities boast programs that either accommodate, or are especially designed for, children with special needs. From gymnastics classes to STEM education, there are no limits on fun this summer. Read on to learn about available programs:

FLIP FOR FUN: Byers Gymnastics Centers have classes for everyone. From preschool programs to tumbling and trampolines, students can flip, jump and bounce their way through obstacle courses and floor routines. On Fridays at the Citrus Heights location, Byers hosts a class that caters to children with disabilities. Jennifer Ivanovich, director and head coach of the Citrus Heights location, says the class has seen kids with down syndrome, developmental delays and autism. “It’s a safe environment for them,” she says. To accommodate any limitations, parents participate with their children. “They need that extra hands-on, that extra help,” Ivanovich said. The gymnastics class, which is offered year round, works on physical abilities. “It’s all gross motor skills. I know a lot of kids come in and its kind of an occupational therapy session for them,” Ivanovich explains. While children build muscle strength, balance and coordination through songs, obstacle circuits and other activities, they also learn skills to help them in everyday life, such as playing/social skills and coordination for other sports. Physical improvements however are not the only takeaways. Children in the class also work 34 JULY 2015 sacramentoparent.com

on learning to take turns and following directions. (Call 916-723-7700 for more information.) EXERCISE YOUR MIND: According to ID Tech, over one million STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) jobs are expected to go unfilled by 2020, yet nine out of ten high schools do not offer computer science courses. In an effort to bridge the gap, ID Tech hosts summer programs at college campuses, including California State University, Sacramento (CSUS). ID Tech offers weeklong day and overnight summer tech camps for kids ages 7 to 17 with an interest in computer

programming, app development, video game design, robotics engineering, animation and more. Small class sizes (a maximum of eight students per class) allow instructors to tailor classes to individual needs and interests. “We are not a special needs camp... however, we are open to everyone and we accommodate people as best as we can,” says Karen Thurm Safran, vice president of marketing and business development at ID Tech. “We do have students who have special needs.” At camp, kids learn self-confidence, problem solving, creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and innovation. They also learn new ways to communicate, such as through film. “We show kids firsthand through project-based learning how they can take a hobby or an interest and turn it into something much more,” Safran says of the summer technology program. Ongoing enrollment is offered on a firstcome, first-serve basis. Classes are also offered in the Bay Area. Parents are encouraged to call and discuss special needs beforehand. (For more information, visit www.IDtech.com.)

GET IN SOME GIRL-TIME: Girl Scouts Heart of Central California (GSHCC) opens its doors for all girls to attend their resident camp programs. “Inclusion is part of our DNA,” says Alicia Allen, communications and public relations specialist at GSHCC. “Our mission is to serve all girls.” Tucked in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Camp Menzies, located near Arnold, hosts several sleep away camp programs. General camps— such as Forest Friends, Sierra Safari and Indiana Janes—allow children to sample a little bit of everything. Specialty-themed camps that focus on theater, sports, travel and more, are available, too.

accommodations contact GSHCC before signing up for a camp session. This will help GSHCC make any necessary arrangements and alert parents of any accommodations that cannot be made. All camps are held at Camp Menzies, 175 acres of semi-primitive campgrounds where children sleep in tents or cabins, dine in an open-air dining hall and take advantage of art and nature centers. Parent handbooks, available online, outline programs to help parents pick a camp that is suitable for their child. (For more information, visit GirlScoutsHCC.org/camp.)

EXPLORE THE GREAT OUTDOORS:

All programs are broken up by age and range from 4 to 8 days in length. Allen applauds the experience for helping girls build self-confidence while participating in a slew of outdoor activities such as horseback riding, hiking and canoeing.

The Access Leisure section of the City of Sacramento, Department of Parks and Recreation has created a set of programs exclusively for people with disabilities.

Safety is the number one priority at GSHCC, says Allen, which is why they ask that parents of children who require special

programmatic and attitudinal barriers,” explained Jenny Yarrow, program coordinator at Access Leisure. “The personnel and programming structure at our Access Leisure programs serves to systematically remove these barriers.” This summer, they are offering Camp Nej, a wilderness adventure camp for children ages 10 to 18 with disabilities. There are two sessions available starting in July. The camp, located 40 miles north of Truckee, serves individuals with Muscular Dystrophy, Spina Bifida, Spinal Cord Injury, Cerebral Palsy and other orthopedic impairments. To appropriately accommodate these individuals, the camp boasts a one-on-one camper-counselor ratio. A permanent wheelchair-accessible bathroom facility and infirmary are also included.

Camp Nej helps campers with disabilities learn that they are not alone. There are other children who have disabilities similar or identical to their own. In addition to participating in activities like fishing, swimming, boating, arts and crafts, nature walks and other outdoor handson activities, campers will also learn independence, responsibility, problem solving and flexibility. “There are many benefits to recreation and camping programs,” Yarrow explained, including developing skills to compensate for limitations experienced as a result of a disability. humor me

just an ordinary rock By Brandon Haynes My son has a rock collection. A nondescript thing to be sure, but the rocks themselves are what makes them unique. They are ordinary. Ubiquitous and boring, these are the shabbiest rocks known to man, yet he adored them as if they were fresh from some exotic archaeological dig in a Raiders of the Last Ark film. How embarrassing a proposition! My son, owner of the worst hobby on the block. My apprehension grew with each stone he drug up from the driveway and I resolved to teach him a thing or two about collecting things. He needed cliff notes on market forces, supply and demand, the invisible hand, and what constitutes actual value. If he were to collect rocks they had to be cool rocks.

“Son, those are regular rocks. Anyone can get those. Heck, they’re everywhere.” “I know,” he says, polishing away at his glorified gravel. “When people collect rocks, they collect cool rocks and well...those aren’t cool rocks dude.” Well there it was. I had saved us both from certain embarrassment. I’d buy a couple moon rocks, a crystal and throw in a shark tooth for good measure. He’d be the talk of the lunch table for at least 30 seconds (short attention spans) after pulling out the shark tooth. Yep, I was proud of myself and my ability to pass down all three decades of living knowledge, one lesson at a time, to the next generation. Or so I thought. My six-year-old: “But not everyone that collects rocks, collects cool rocks dad. Like me, I collect rocks and I don’t collect cool rocks.” Can’t argue with logic, regardless of the source. But, what he said next hit me like a ton of...well, rocks. “Besides, these are easy to like Dad. Those other rocks cost money to like.” The tables had turned and I was unsure at this point who was teaching whom the lesson. Because for all of my accumulated knowledge and street smarts there was a certain wisdom this boy possessed that my old rigid mind had forgotten. Or simply coded over. He understood time like only kids can. He knew without even the realization of knowing. He knew as if it was the most ordinary thing to know and probably couldn’t understand how it could ever be forgotten. That if you seek beauty and passion in the simple things all around you, happiness can be found everywhere you look. For free. There is a message there somewhere. Something like...

‘If life deals you ordinary rocks— start a rock collection.’ Brandon is a father of four and his greatest discovery as a parent is that teaching is indeed the best way to learn.
