Fortunately, there’s so much for families to to do in the Greater Sacramento area and a lot of it won’t even cost you a dime. From free concerts in local parks to special activities at local libraries, I am in awe as I look through the calendar each month! You truly can have an amazing and memorable summer staycation. Sure, there’s lots of fun and games in this issue, but if you’ve got kids that are a little older please read the article inside on vaping. It’s really a big issue locally...and across the nation. You’ve probably seen the commercials, but I was surprised to read about how high the nicotine content is and not to mention all the chemicals and additives, who knows what the long-term effects can be? Some of my favorite memories from childhood are times spent helping my mom in our garden. Now that I have kids of my own, I’ve continued the gardening tradition with my three boys. There is nothing better than enjoying fresh fruit or vegetables straight from your own yard! I find my kids are much more likely to try a new vegetable or fruit when we’ve grown it ourselves. Today’s project is a creative way to get your kids even more involved in the garden.
Supplies Needed: Wooden tongue depressors Acrylic paint & paintbrush Hot glue gun Sharpie marker

Instructions: Step 1: Paint tongue depressors. Each garden marker uses four tongue depressors— you’ll paint two and leave two unpainted. Step 2: Once the paint has dried, glue the two unpainted tongue depressors to the back of the two painted tongue depressors. Step 3: Using the sharpie marker, write the type of plant on the garden marker. If you’re feeling creative, you can do a simple sketch of the vegetable or fruit as well! Container gardening is growing in popularity, so it’s easy and fairly inexpensive to get started. Tomatoes are a good choice for beginners. If you don’t have a lot of outdoor space, an herb garden on a windowsill is great alternative.

Encourage Kids to Learn a Second Language By Stephen Muff
Americans are notorious for not learning another language. Roughly three-quarters of Americans have no foreign language. Yet, a nation to the North speaks French, a nation to the south speaks Spanish, and we can see Russia approximately 55 miles from Alaska. The benefits of learning a second language is overwhelming. It doesn’t just improve job prospects, but improves multitasking, helps prevent Alzheimer’s, and even improves your understanding of English. This is not to mention job and travel opportunities that were not previously available. Good thing Sacramento has lots of opportunities for language learning. If you would like to make use of these opportunities, then keep reading! SPANISH When Spanish explorer Gabriel Moraga discovered the Sacramento Valley and the Sacramento River, the home of the the Nisenan and Plains Miwok tribes, he was overcome by its beauty. He compared it to the Catholic Eucharist with the words, "¡Es como el sagrado sacramento!” It’s like the Blessed Sacrament. And such the city was named! At this point, the region was (at the very least) tri-lingual with two major tribes and the Spaniards. As California’s second-most popular language, opportunities to learn Spanish abound. However, Casa de Español has classes for kids, teens, and adults. http://casadeespanol.org CHINESE For almost 200 years, Chinese immigrants have come to the Sacramento region and preserved their cultural and linguistic traditions. There is even the town of Locke just south of Sacramento on the Delta, built and maintained by Chinese immigrants. Now, Chinese is the world’s most popular language with over a billion speakers, and children can take Mandarin or Cantonese classes at The Wisdom Chinese School. www.wisdomchineseschool.org
FRENCH Another language that has had a presence in the Sacramento region since the Gold Rush is French. In fact, the nearby town of Auburn was founded by a Frenchman named Claude Chana. His statue is in Old Town. In any case, the Alliance Française de Sacramento has French lessons for all ages. www.afsacramento.org Also, Education Française de Sacramento is a language school dedicated exclusively to French and has many locations throughout the area. http://efsac.com ARABIC The fifth most popular language in the world today is Arabic, with millions of speakers and an official language in dozens of countries. In Sacramento, ALEFE, Inc. is a nonprofit that “aims at providing free and low-cost Arabic language programs to TK-12 students”, and even have an Arabic Montessori After School Class. www.alefe.org GERMAN For over 150 years, the center for German language and culture in Sacramento is undoubtedly the Turn Verein. The Turn Verein has a German Language School for children as young as one-year-old and continues through adulthood. They have
a long tradition in Sacramento and put on the city’s largest annual Oktoberfest celebration (with kid-friendly activities). Also, they have the Christkindlmarkt, or Christmas market, in December (2018 is their 19th annual celebration) that lets kids experience some of the traditions from the Old World. www.stv-germanlanguageschool.org ITALIAN The Italian Cultural Society, with their “Ciao” language program for children, teach the Italian language through “play, games, songs, food and art”–some of the very things that brings Italy to mind. They have been active in Sacramento since 1986. They also have activities like Italian folk dancing and festivals. www.italiancenter.info JAPANESE The Sakura Gakuen school in Sacramento has provided Japanese language instruction for over a century. The school was founded in 1903 as a school for the children of Japanese immigrants, and is taught today by native speakers. OTHER RESOURCES Do not forget that when learning a language, every little bit helps. The Sacramento area is rich in resources, and there are all kinds of opportunities for you and your children to hone language skills. Check out local libraries for additional resources and consider joining a Meetup.com group, where you can engage native speakers when you identify them. Of course, there are always online resources–some of which, like www.Duolingo.com, are free. Also, many charter schools have language learning
options for home study programs, which is quite useful for parents who are homeschooling their children but do not speak the language well enough to teach it themselves. Another option is The Spanish Immersion Program, a local resource that is essentially a Spanish Language learning program in a box. https://thespanishimmersion.com/ Whatever your language du jour is (see what I did there?), Sacramento has options. While Sacramento International Airport only goes to about three destinations outside the United States (Cabo
San Lucas, Guadalajara, and Mexico City), the city does have an international undertone and opportunities for exposure to cultures from across the globe. It certainly has the tools to give children a lifelong gift of a love for travel, cultures, and people. Sacramento’s language resources could put your kids uniquely apart from over 75% of this country. More importantly, it’s easiest for kids to learn languages, so it’s important to start them young. Don’t miss this opportunity!

What is Parent-Child Interactive Therapy?
The need-to-know for parents of kids with behavioral challenges. By Michelle Kopkash Frequent tantrums. Non-stop whining. Shows of aggression. Constant complaining. Acts of defiance. Deliberate attempts to annoy others for attention. If any of these negative behaviors sound painfully familiar to you as a parent, there’s good news. With the right parenting tools and skills, these negative interactions and attitudes can be greatly reduced, a more peaceful household can be established, and parental and sibling relationships can improve with the child who exhibits these types of behaviors. Whether you’re raising a child with a mental health challenge or one who frequently displays emotional or behavioral difficulties, Parent Child Interactive Training (PCIT) can successfully coach caregivers through some of parenting’s biggest struggles. During this training, parents and caregivers are equipped with tools and training to properly reinforce positive behaviors, set clear limits on their child’s negative behaviors, effectively discipline, re-establish familial bonds of attachment and cope with their child’s specific behavioral challenges. As a result, the child’s negative behaviors are reduced and replaced with positive behavioral interactions and attitudes. Dr. Tanda Almont, Psy.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist, was trained at UC Davis Children’s Hospital in PCIT and has been on the forefront of the evolution of this program for nearly two decades. She worked as one of the clinical psychologists at the UC Davis Children’s Hospital in the early 2000s and observed the positive and long-lasting results of PCIT for the families and kids she worked with first-hand. In 2006, she founded the Monarch Center in Roseville, a specialized mental health services center for struggling children and parents, in order to bring the practice of PCIT to the private insurance sector, which until then, was out of reach financially to many families in our area. To learn more about this highly touted program, I spoke with Dr. Almont at great length. Below is an excerpt from our interview. Describe the program to those of us who are unfamiliar with this treatment plan. Essentially, this is a training program for parents who are challenged by behaviors that their children routinely display; rather than a therapy program for children, one of the main results is that they’ll see a reduction in their child’s negative behaviors and an increase in compliance and positive attitudes.

After the session, the parent is given homework to practice with their child for five minutes each day. Every week, we build on that material. It’s a very intensive program. Depending on the family, the program may be completed in 10 to 15 sessions, which occur about once per week.
During the sessions, a trained therapist sits behind a one-way mirror while parents work with the child on the other side to learn new parenting strategies for behavioral problems. The parents get trained in real-time, wearing an earpiece, as the therapist coaches them through their child’s behaviors and gives the
What types of skills do you work on during the training sessions? We provide the parent with a “tool belt” of tailored techniques that they can use to improve their parenting skills and better manage their child’s specific behaviors. Then, they have a skill for whatever their child does. Not only does the child become more
compliant, but the parents feel more confident and learn how to effectively work with their child in a more encouraging, calmer manner. It’s a win-win. There are two parts to the program. The first phase teaches positive parenting skills which include reinforcements, rewards, reflective listening skills and inactive discipline strategies. The second part to the program teaches active discipline techniques, such as the proper way to do a time out and other consequences that matter to the child. Every kid is different. What kinds of issues might lead a parent to seek you out for PCIT services? There are a wide range of behavioral challenges and struggles that might cause a parent to seek help for their child and family, but typical issues that can be reduced by PCIT include difficulty managing negative behaviors such as whining, dawdling, tantrums, aggression, defiance, noncompliance and the like. Many children have mental health issues such as ADHD, oppositional defiance disorder, anxiety or emotional challenges that contribute to these behaviors. I also see a large number of families whose children just simply have behavioral issues and parents want to become better parents to these kids. Perhaps the parents are bribing, spanking or yelling in an effort to reduce their child’s negative behaviors, or they have no tools to deal with a child who has emotional outbursts and the negative cycle is becoming more ingrained in their family’s interactions. What types of improvements might a family expect to see after completing the PCIT program? The program is really meant to improve three areas—the first being behavioral issues, the second being that many parents just want to figure out how to parent their child better, and the third is that they have sibling issues within the home, which often result from the behavioral issues and repetitive negative cycles that have been established within the family’s dynamics. We also get referrals from schools when teachers have ongoing problems with a child. In those cases, we will work with the staff to train them on how to better work with that child’s personality to improve classroom and school behavior. What age group benefits most from this form of help? Research indicates that the best success comes from kids who are between the ages of two to eight years old developmentally, not chronologically. However, in my practice I always involve the siblings and those children can be any age. How and why do you incorporate the sibling into the training program? It differs per family. Some parents can easily multitask and we work with the whole family at one time. Other families have problems multitasking and so we bring in the sibling after a few sessions.

Vaping 101 By Christa Melnyk Hines Just as cigarette smoking drops to its lowest level in years, e-cigarette use, a.k.a. "vaping," is exploding among middle and high school students. Teens may blow off the trend as harmless, but experts think otherwise. "It's important to understand that this is a drug delivery system. In some ways, calling it 'vaping' almost makes it sound benign and not dangerous," says Dr. Stephen Thornton, a medical toxicologist and emergency room physician. WHAT ARE E-CIGARETTES? Initially marketed as smoking cessation devices, e-cigarettes are electronic nicotine delivery systems that use lithium-ion battery operated devices to heat up and vaporize a flavored, liquid solution called e-juice. The user then inhales the vaporized solution. WHAT'S IN THE E-JUICE? The e-juice usually contains nicotine extract, which is mixed with propylene glycol (typically used in inhalers) and flavorings, like mint, fruit loops, gummy bears and passion fruit. Since solutions aren't currently regulated by the FDA, buyers have no way of knowing how much nicotine is in a product, including those that claim to contain zero nicotine. “Right now many manufacturers are putting whatever they want in it, including potentially harmful chemicals," says Jamie Katz, a youth drug and alcohol prevention coordinator. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? Chemicals found in e-cigarette vapor include aldehydes (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein and acetone); diacetyl, a highly toxic chemical linked to lung disease; volatile organic compounds found in car exhaust; and heavy metals like nickel, lead and chromium. to know exactly what kind of short or long-term problems you're going to get from exposure to these chemicals," Thornton says. "Some products are probably safe if you eat or drink them, but once you start inhaling them into the lungs and you start vaporizing them, it changes the dynamics." In the short-term, users may be more prone to viral infections in the lungs and asthmatic types of reactions. Hospitals are also treating more people with traumatic injuries related to the devices exploding in their faces or in their pockets. "I don't think people appreciate how much power is in the devices in order to get the heat that vaporizes the solution," Thornton says. "If you think about it, you're holding up a grenade to your face and if it goes off, that's going to be a very bad story." WHAT'S THE APPEAL? According to Katz, kids think vaping is cool, healthier than smoking cigarettes, and a stress reliever. Leaving no odors other than a light, fruity scent, e-cigarettes are easy to conceal in a pocket or purse. They often resemble pens or USB flash drives, like JUUL, which is especially popular among kids. Then, there's the celebrity effect. "An adolescent sees celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Katherine Heigl using these products openly in public, and there's that diminished sense that it's not a harmful product," says Kevin Kufeldt, an adolescent treatment center program manager. Vape "cloud chasing" competitions featured online, in which people blow clouds and do tricks with e-cigarettes add to the attraction. CREATING A NEW GENERATION OF ADDICTS? With candy flavored solutions and labels like Unicorn Milk,
Cotton Candy and Zombie Juice, many experts believe that e-cig marketers are specifically targeting kids. "I doubt there's a 45-year-old guy out there who says 'Man, I really need to have my spearmint bubble gum vape today,'" Thornton says. A JUUL pod contains 59 milligrams of nicotine per milliliter of liquid, which the manufacturer says is equivalent to the amount of nicotine in a pack of cigarettes. "On a milligram per milligram basis, nicotine is ten times more potent than heroin," Kufeldt says."Kids will tell me they think they actually smoke more with e-cigarettes than with a traditional cigarette because they can use more often throughout the day." Research suggests that teens who vape are more likely to smoke cigarettes later. Many users also vape substances like synthetic cannabinoids, fentanyl, Xanax and marijuana. Talk to your kids. Promote a healthy lifestyle, discuss the harmful effects of addictive substances on the body, and talk about healthier ways to manage stress. "Parents can influence their kids' decision to vape," Katz says. "Talk to your children about your expectations and why you don't want them to use e-cigarettes. You can expect them to live tobacco free."
