2016 is the year to PERMANenTLY SOLVE your child’s learning difficulties.
dear readers Welcome to the preschool and childcare issue. As if it was yesterday, I remember the preschool and toddler days with my girls—and while it wasn’t always easy—it was amazing to watch my girls find joy in learning, exploring the world around them and discovering who they are. I also grew a lot during this phase and learned a ton about who I was as a mom, too.

There were definitely those times, like when we were in a department store and my daughter had to have a princess magnetic locker mirror. She was 2 years-old and I wasn’t buying it. The closer I got to the checkout line, the more desperate she became. Ultimately, in a last ditch effort, she threw herself on the floor demanding the mirror or she was not going to move. As a first time mom, I intuitively knew this was not the time to cave in and buy the mirror, so I anxiously waited for the cashier to check me out, scooped up my daughter and hoped no one would think I was kidnapping her as she flailed in my arms all the way to the car. Once she calmed down, we headed home and the mirror was forgotten—totally off her radar. So it was then, the toddler years when I really realized what I signed up for with this “mom gig.” I will never forget what the person behind me in line said that day. She said, “Thank you for reminding me why I never want kids.” Fast forward (and it does go fast), my once 2 year-old is now 11 and she’s awesome, but for the first time I find myself fumbling and navigating my way through the tween and teen years. Bring it on—I wouldn’t change it for anything!

I’ve always used the term “four leaf clovers,” but a quick drive-thru trip after baseball practice recently introduced my boys to the word “shamrock” (via the Shamrock Shake), and now they think shamrock is much more fun to say. No matter what you call it, this little green plant with heart shaped leaves is the quintessential symbol of St. Patrick’s Day, and we’ve put together a fun kids craft to celebrate the holiday—mosaic paper shamrocks! What You’ll Need: • Green poster board or heavy cardstock • Paper–(plain and patterned) in assorted shades of green • Glue Stick or Glue Pen • Scissors
Begin by cutting the assorted green papers (we used glittered, solids and prints) into strips approximately 1/2” wide and then cut the strips into squares. There’s no need to be perfect! Cut shamrock shapes from the green poster board or heavy cardstock. Apply the glue to the shamrock cut out, and start placing paper mosaic squares on to the shape. Don’t worry if the squares overlap the edges of your shamrock—they can be trimmed to size later. My 3 year-old had so much fun with this activity that he actually made three shamrocks of his own! He was especially enamored with the “pretty sparkly paper” and worked happily at the table on his projects for quite a long time. My two older boys (ages 7 and 8) also had a lot of fun with this craft, and we’ve decided to recreate it with our home school group at our St. Patrick’s Day party. This activity is perfect for a large group because minimal supplies are needed, and it’s appropriate for a wide variety of age groups. Allow the paper squares to dry completely before trimming off any overhanging edges. Isn’t that cute? {and super easy and inexpensive, too!} We added the shamrocks to the window on our mantel, and my boys are so proud that their work is front and center in the display! appreciating the small things. When Scott Moak leaves his office and takes the elevator down to courtside at Sleep Train Arena on April 9th he will begin the process of ushering out an iconic but turbulent era for Sacramento sports. For the past 28 seasons, love it or hate it, this arena has been home to the Sacramento Kings, and for the last 14 of those years, Scott has been the public announcer who rallies the fans at every home game. In October, the much-awaited Golden 1 Center will open its doors to Kings fans for the first time and Scott may find himself sitting in a new chair, but he’ll still be doing his dream job. “I have a courtside seat and get to do a job that only 29 other people in the country get to do,” he tells me from his soon-to-be-old office at Sleep Train. “I feel so very grateful for having the opportunity to stay in the announcer’s chair.” Even though, after hearing his journey to that chair, it’s clearly no accident that Scott has become such an integral part of the King’s organization, Scott’s career plan was actually what seemed like worlds away: working in community services. He holds an undergraduate degree from UC Davis in psychology and a master’s in marriage and family therapy. At college, while his friends were waiting tables and serving at drive throughs, Scott worked at the North Davis Child Development Center. “I always just felt like that kind of work was easier for me,” he recalls. During the last 14 years as the King’s announcer, he has always maintained a “day job” too, working for the Sacramento Children’s Home at one point and then local human services and organizations that deal with child abuse prevention.
It was an interesting mix of lives, for sure: dealing with tough, heavy subjects during the day and then letting loose behind the mic to amp up a crowd of thousands at night. But it seems it provided him with a much needed outlet. Even now, he explains that his job as announcer is the place where he likes to go to relieve stress. Two years ago, however, his worlds collided. When the Kings were sold to a group led by Silicon Valley tech entrepreneur, Vivek Ranadive, the new leadership team took note of Scott’s other life and offered him a dream opportunity. “They knew what I did by day and were intrigued by that,” he says, “so they asked if I would be willing to use my experience in the community to help usher a Kings foundation and community work into the new era.” It took him all of two seconds to say yes and he has led the good works of the Kings Foundation ever since as the Executive Director, as well as serving as the team’s Vice President of Community Impact. “I have been a fan of this team since I was a kid when the Kings first came to town and my mom and dad would bring me to games,” he enthuses, his voice rising with excitement just recalling the moment he was offered the job. “So now, I get to blend my love of the non-profit, philanthropic, charitable work with my night job. Sometimes I think, “How did this happen? I am so lucky that I get to do this!” Even during what he calls “the dark days,” when the Kings record was in decline, and then when the future of the team in Sacramento was in question, he never once lost enthusiasm or his sense of gratitude. “I’m a basketball fan and a Kings
fan, so even when things weren’t going well, it was still a professional basketball game that I got to watch courtside. I would also think about that kid that was coming to his first game like I did once. Just because the team wasn’t playing well and the ownership was having a tough time and just because the building is old—it doesn’t mean that the kid shouldn’t have a great experience.” It’s an attitude that he says is ingrained in the culture, organization-wide, now that the new ownership is firmly in place and the new arena almost finished. The Golden 1 center is going to be a massive celebration of the team’s bright new future in the region. “The fans will have no idea what’s going to hit them when they walk in,” says Scott after listing all the venue’s impressive attributes: covering 4 city blocks of entertainment, recreation and office space, a carbon and grid-neutral footprint, a plethora of dining options unlike Sacramento has ever seen, and housing some cool new technology features like the semi-truck sized scoreboard which was announced a couple of months ago. “When the doors close on Sleep Train, I think people will look back on the Kings time there with such a breadth of emotions,” he surmises. “If you put it all on a chart, there’s a lot of ups and downs. I think that’s what people will remember: how good it was and how hard it was— all in this building—and I think people will carry those memories with them into the new venue.” With so much transition and excitement in his professional life, Scott’s home life has become an important refuge. He and his wife, Stacy, live in West Sacramento with their two children Evan, age 5, and Continued on page 17

next door Both Scott and Stacy are fortunate to have a good deal of flexibility in their jobs, which allows them to be around as much as working parents can. Stacy gets to work from home occasionally and Scott takes Evan to school every day, which he says is one of his favorite parts of the day. “I also haven’t missed a field trip,” he boasts. “I go on all of them.” Even so, they depend upon the help of Lauren, their care provider, who fills in the gaps. “To say she is a member of our family would be an understatement,” he says.

Asher, age 2. He calls them his “sweet people” and gushes about each and every one of them, especially his wife who is a prominent attorney and in-house counsel for a large corporation. “She is among the smartest people—maybe even the smartest person—I know,” he says when I ask him to tell me about her. “She’s super modest when it comes to her craft. If she and I were out when we met you for the first time and you asked her what she does, she would say something like “Oh, I work in law,” and that would be it. But she is very respected in her field. What impresses me most is her ability to toggle the tough world she inhabits by day with coming home to be the best mommy ever. It’s an incredible skill.” On weekends the Moaks are found reconnecting in simple ways after weekdays spent devoting their energy to their demanding, but fulfilling jobs. “We love just being together at home. We’ll play games or have a dance party or pull out the bounce house,” Scott tells me. “Even the most mundane of moments can be
some of the most special, not taking for granted the time we have with each other.” Evan is the thoughtful, cautious child. “She had the good fortune of talking really early,” he remembers. “We were having what felt like full-blown conversations with her when she was a year and a half old. Her vocabulary is amazing. She loves school, she loves reading, and she’s helpful. Much more like her mom than her dad,” he quips.
The day after our phone interview, I got to meet Scott and his family at a local park. Far from being the flamboyant personality that his night job might suggest, he is very even-keeled and laid back, likely a function of his degrees and then years of involvement in community organizations that deal with difficult and sensitive subjects. Both he and Stacy are interesting and interested, engaged with their children and easy to get along with. One of the values Scott says that he and Stacy share is a belief in the importance of relationships and I definitely got a taste of that in our short time together, leaving our photo session feeling like I had made new friends. “I always feel like it’s going to come around,” I recall Scott telling me toward the end of our interview. “If you do good, if you do it right, it’s going to work out for you.” Continued on page 19
Meanwhile Asher is shaping up to be the quintessential dare-devil boy, full of energy and never afraid to take physical risks. “Evan watches him do things like climb up the slide and jump and I can tell she is thinking why would you even do that?” Scott laughs. “He pushes her a little bit, which is probably really good in some cases. But he pushes us, too! If he’s awake, he’s moving or wrestling or kicking and throwing a ball. But, at the same time, he’s one of the happiest kids I’ve ever been around.” sacramentoparent.com MARCH 2016 17

BEING A DAD HAS TAUGHT ME…. patience!
THE BEST PART OF BEING A PARENT IS… coming home. Those greetings from my kids! I know that those don’t last forever, but my-oh-my when I get home and walk through the door, see them running up to me and wanting to be hugged and kissed, and to tell me about their day—that’s the good stuff. I love it.
THE TOUGHEST PART OF BEING A PARENT IS… always wanting to be with them, wishing I could be. It goes to wanting to slow down time. I remember someone saying the other day, “The days are long, but the years are fast.” I love that. It can feel like that with little ones, that the days are long. But really, it all goes so fast.
HARDLY ANYBODY KNOWS I… am not a well-traveled or cultured human being. I have been virtually nowhere. We had a family trip to Ireland the year before Evan was born. Other than that I’ve been to Mexico and that’s about it. I have all these friends who are telling me about their backpacking stories in Europe and how Istanbul is great this time of year and I’m often left wondering, “Who are you people!?” I have not had those types of experiences in my life. I grew up in Sacramento and still live in Sacramento. My bubble is pretty tight. HOW MUCH SLEEP DO CHILDREN NEED? By Jennifer Denzel, Rested Family Child Sleep Consulting
Quality sleep restores energy to help build brain function, neurological development, attention span, motor skills and concentration. The first step in establishing healthy sleep habits is to understand how much sleep your child needs. Most of us have an approximate idea of how long our little ones are sleeping at night, but sometimes these estimates aren’t accurate. To make sure your child gets the recommended amount of shut-eye, track their sleep over the course of 7 to 10 days. You may be surprised to learn they are coming up short in the sleep they need. These small deficits can add up, resulting in sleep deprivation.

Below are some general guidelines as to how many hours of sleep the AVERAGE child requires from infant through preschool/TK ages, as recommended by Dr. Richard Ferber. Remember, every child is different (some need more or less sleep than others), but variations should be small.

Wish you had time or money All you need is $25 and one hour. by Michelle McDaid
I remembered the days before I had my daughter. I would get regular massages and pedicures, my eyebrows were wellshaped, my clothes regularly refreshed thanks to weekend shopping trips, and I’d spend Sunday mornings lazing on the couch in my PJs watching a chick flick (and all of it without an ounce of guilt). Taking care of myself and doing things that brought me joy were just things I did without too much thought or planning. Now my life is about putting someone else first, I get wrapped up in mommy-guilt whenever I take time out for myself. If I’m not working, I’m with my daughter. If I take time away from work to do something for myself, I feel guilty. If I take time away from my daughter to do something for myself, I feel guilty. Then there’s the house work, the husband, other friends and family, all of which deserve your love and attention too.
WHAT OR WHO EXACTLY ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO HAPPILY SACRIFICE TO TREAT YOURSELF TO A LITTLE LUXURY? (Yes, that is an incredibly difficult question to answer.) This past year, however, and thanks to a book I read called, “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron, I have been finding my way back to small acts of self-care and joy, reconnecting with the importance of nurturing myself as a way to have greater capacity to nurture others in return. You know when you get on a plane and flight attendants go through the safety procedures, they tell you to put the oxygen mask on yourself before helping other people? Well, there is a good, scientific reason for that: you can do a much better job of helping others when you’ve taken good care of yourself. Maybe you don’t have as much money or time as you used to before kids, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything for yourself. In fact, with just $25 and an hour, you can add a little guiltfree pampering to your week. Could you commit to just one hour a week? If you work, that’s your lunch hour. If you stay home with your kids, that’s one hour of baby-sitting. Perhaps the laundry has to wait or your partner has to figure out dinner one night. Is that really so bad? (Right now you should be shaking your head no!)
YES, YOU CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN. HERE ARE 10 IDEAS FOR THAT HOUR-OF-YOU: A foot massage. If you can’t afford a full-body massage in a fancy spa, some of the reputable strip mall massage services offer one hour foot massages that also include a lovely, clothed massage of your neck, shoulders, and back too. I like Happy Day Spa, which has a few locations in the Sac area. If you don’t mind being in a room of other people, $25 gets you an hour of relaxation. I bring my headphones so I can listen to my favorite music and tune-out the comings and goings in the room. If that’s not for you, private room massages are available for slightly more. What’s even better, these establishments can accommodate walk-in appointments too, so you can make it a spur-of-the moment decision when the opportunity presents itself. Happy Hour with a friend. Okay, so maybe you used to paint the town red. Perhaps that level of indulgence is on pause for a while, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy girl time with your besties. Google “All Night Happy Hour” and you’ll find a bevy of Sacramento area restaurants offering happy hour pricing at any time that works for you. Put the kids to bed and leave the husband in charge for an 22 MARCH 2016 sacramentoparent.com
to put yourself first? hour while you grab a glass of wine and gossip. Take yourself to lunch. And I don’t mean a hasty sub at Togos. I mean book a table for one at your favorite restaurant. Nice restaurants often have less expensive lunch menus and, with only yourself to pay for, you can easily get in and out under $25. I recently ate at Scott’s Seafood in Folsom for within that budget and I love to lunch downtown whenever I’m there so I can people watch while I wait. If you’re worried about what you’re going to do with yourself for an hour without anyone to talk to, take your e-reader or book and indulge in some completely uninterrupted reading time while you dine. Give yourself a facial. Ask your other half to take the kids out to the park on Sunday and set your own little spa up in your bedroom. All you need is some relaxing music (which you can stream on a playlist from Spotify) some candles or incense in your favorite scent, and some of those little one-use facial masks you can buy from most drug stores for a few dollars. Cleanse, apply, and lay down on your bed. I like to grab my favorite blanket to drape over myself while I let the goodness soak in. This approach also works great for pedicures too.
Take a walk in nature. So often we think of any kind of exercise as a chore but research shows that taking a walk outside has benefits far beyond improving your cardiovascular health. Stanford researchers say that it improves creativity, wards off negative feelings, and helps alleviate depression, sparking immediate feelings of happiness and attentiveness. CEOs like Mark Zuckerberg and the late Steve Jobs, were known for taking meetings during walks to spark ideas and positive, clear thinking. The Sacramento area is a fantastic place to live for walkers, with trails within a short distance of almost anywhere you work or live. When I’m having one of “those” days, where everything seems to be going wrong, I love to “walk it out” by taking myself on a brisk walk around the block for just 10 minutes. It always makes me feel better and when I return to my desk I find my problems feel a little lighter. Alltrails.com is a great resource for finding walks or hikes throughout the area. Indulge in a neglected hobby. Did you used to love to sew? Knit? Garden? Draw? It’s easy to put down our hobbies while we’re busy picking up kids. But maybe it’s time to start getting back to some of those little things that spark some extra endorphins. In
the last year I’ve rekindled my love for painting and drawing, and I started a brand new hobby that’s been on my bucket list for a while: playing the guitar. Get a store makeover. Cosmetic counters at department and beauty stores offer free makeup consultations to encourage you to purchase their products. Getting a fresh new look and seeing yourself look gorgeous can be a fantastic way to boost your mood. You don’t have to purchase anything but if, like me, you think you’re going to have a hard time getting out of the chair without spending a dime, decide ahead of time that you’ll leave with something simple that will make a big difference. I like to find a new shade of lipstick. It’s enough to make me smile every time I pass a mirror and it’s always great to get compliments throughout the day from people who notice you’re trying something new. Get daily inspiration to live happy. If you’re the kind of person that needs a prod to remember to take care of yourself, there are lots of great phone apps to help. MeYouHealth’s Daily Challenge is one of my favorites (www.challenge.meyouhealth. com) which prompts you with a simple to-do for the
day to boost your mood or take better care of yourself. You can even choose from different tracks like eating more healthfully, increasing energy, conquering clutter, better sleep, and improving communication skills, or just have it pick from all tracks for you for a total mix. Meditate. Okay, okay. Yep, if you’ve never done it before it sounds a little woo-woo, maybe slightly scary, and perhaps even like a waste of time. As an A-Type personality who likes to be on-the-go all the time, sitting down to meditate has always sounded like time I could better spend elsewhere. What shifted for me was when I was taking a photography course and the teacher suggested meditating with an app called HeadSpace to help me clear my mind to make way for new ideas. I tried their free, 10-day starter Continued on page 25 sacramentoparent.com MARCH 2016 23

pack and was hooked. The app approaches meditation in a very practical and down-toearth way, presenting it as a workout for your brain vs. a spiritual practice (although you can bring the latter to each exercise if that works for you, www.headspace.com). Color. If you’ve been in a book or craft store lately, it probably hasn’t escaped you that adult coloring is the new craze for alleviating stress. There are stacks of adult coloring books almost everywhere you turn right now, and for good reason. A recent article in USA today reported that, not only does coloring bring you back to happy memories of childhood and give you a break from the digital world, it can ease you into a meditative state of mind that helps push away negative thoughts and worries. What works is that it’s a structured, rhythmic process that engages your mind and your focus. For this reason other activities like knitting,
crocheting, and quilting can have the same effect. I have found a great selection of discounted, adult-targeted coloring books at Barnes & Noble. I also recommend investing in some really nice colored pens or pencils from an art store. Crayola is great for kids but there is something about the smooth flow of a good pencil that really helps make the process more enjoyable. These are just suggestions based upon my own last year of exploration. As a creatively-driven person, I tend to gravitate toward arts and music. If your brain is wired differently, maybe these particular activities are not for you. Perhaps, instead, you get a rush of adrenaline from organizing your closet or finishing a puzzle. Awesome! Do that. The point is not so much what you’re doing but that you enjoy it and you actually do it. Just one hour. You can (and should) do it!

Therapeutic Horseback Riding: A Program for All Abilities By Michelle Kopkash Molly, a specially trained therapeutic riding horse, circles the indoor arena at Ride to Walk, Inc., located in Lincoln. Her rider, a 5-year-old boy diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and sensory processing disorder, sits on top, moving with the gentle sway of the horse’s gait whilst petting its mane intently. Four trained individuals accompany Molly and her rider as they work through exercises and skill sets that promote improved coordination, strength, focus and sensory integration. As the boy rotates atop the horse to begin riding backwards, a grin breaks across his face, speaking volumes about his sense of accomplishment and bringing proud tears to his mother’s eyes. His smile is a mark of the program’s success, she explains, as her son has finally found an activity that not only incorporates aspects of occupational and physical therapy into the program, but an opportunity to participate in something that brings him true enjoyment. “This program has turned kids around,” says Kat Druge, a Ride to Walk volunteer for the past seven years. “Some kids say their first words here. A lot of children come into the program with social or physical challenges and here they feel safe, relaxed and empowered. It’s really therapeutic for them. It just opens them up for growth and progress.”
Therapeutic horseback riding programs such as Ride to Walk, Horses for Healing and C-Horse Ranch—the latter two both
“Special needs children often lack recreational programs that allow them to participate at their physical or cognitive ability, but our therapeutic horseback riding program helps them achieve their highest potential in a safe, fun and loving setting. I have never found a child or an adult who didn’t benefit from this incredible sport,” says Dr. Kristine Corn, executive director of Ride to Walk, Inc. Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program Benefits: • Builds muscle tone and physical strength • Increases flexibility • Improves coordination
located in Auburn—work with children and adults with disabilities ranging from ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, sensory processing disorder and other neurological challenges to physical disabilities including cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and genetic disorders. These riding programs are tailored for each specific individual and focus on a number of goals, depending on the child’s needs. The programs, which are recreational in nature but are believed to have a wide range of therapeutic benefits, provide a unique opportunity for children working to overcome challenges.
• Improves focus • Promotes sensory integration • Nurtures emotional/social growth • Builds self-confidence and self-esteem “Children learn, grow and improve in a loving and caring environment in equine facilitated therapy. As a child gains strength and control of his or her body, it allows for the acquisition of new skills and abilities. The child becomes empowered and empowerment helps develop self-esteem. Improved self-esteem generates further gains. It’s a wonderful process,” adds Dr. Corn.

Keep Your Child Safe & Secure on the Road By: Ryan Hawker, Safety 1st Child Passenger Safety Technician and Car Seat Safety Expert
DON’T TURN THEM AROUND!
WIN IT!
When children start to get older, it becomes tempting for parents to turn their kids around. However, it’s vital to keep your child rear-facing for as long as possible (allowed by the car seat’s height, weight, and other criteria)! According to a study in the Journal of Injury Prevention, children under the age of two are 75 percent less likely to die or be severely injured in the event of a car crash if they are rear-facing. Many convertible car seats, such as the new Safety 1st Grow and Go Air, allow children up to 40 lbs. to ride rear-facing. This means that children up to 3 years-old can ride rear-facing. When a child has outgrown the rear-facing capacity of their convertible car seat, they can begin to face forward. If you are going to switch your child to a convertible car seat before age two, purchase a seat that will keep him or her rear-facing. If you have an older child, boosters are extremely important. Most states require a child to be in a booster until 8 years-old, as they have been proven to reduce the risk of serious injury by 45%, according to Safe Kids.
PROPER INSTALLATION SAVES LIVES According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, 75% of car seats are installed incorrectly. Are you one of those parents? If you are not sure, check! Remember, every car and car seat has different requirements for safe installation, so it’s important to read both the car seat and car manual.
Safety 1st GROW AND GO™ AIR 3-IN-1 CAR SEAT
When installing, use either the LATCH or the seat belt. Do not use both! The seat belt is a very effective way to install a car seat but LATCH was developed to provide another option for parents that find it challenging to properly install a child restraint with the seat belt. Once you have the car seat installed make sure it does not move more than one-inch side to side. If you are still unsure if you’ve done it right, check in with a local Child Passenger Safety Technician before you hit the road. You can visit a local police station, fire station, AAA office or Safe Kids Chapter for guidance. Or simply go to seatcheck.org or http://www.safekids.org/events/ field_type/check-event.
IS YOUR SEAT SAFE? Want to know more? You can find more answers to commonly asked car seat questions at https://safety1st.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/ categories/201150533-TOP-10-CAR-SEATQUESTIONS-NEW-PARENTS-ASK.
It’s something you rarely think about, but car seats expire! You can find the expiration date on the back or the side of the car seat. Additionally, if a car seat has been in a crash you should not use it. Plastic can warp, materials can fray and the car seat will not protect a child correctly. This also means that you should avoid used car seats. The history of a car seat tells a lot about its ability to protect on the road ahead. If you don’t know where it has been, you don’t know if it can protect your child. To recycle a car seat, check with your local waste management facility to see if they recycle number 5 plastic.
