Twenty-nine years of freedom. What an incredible milestone to have come so far and have experienced many personal and interpersonal changes. Freedom Day has always been a reminder of all the hardships fought through by our struggle stalwarts. Coincidentally, as we celebrate Freedom Month, five other African countries also gained their independence in the month of April. It is because of this, that April will leave its mark on both the country’s and other African nations’ histories.
We have the 2024 elections coming up. It is important that we all register to vote and put our feet forward and encapsulate all that our predecessors aspired to be. I would like to urge each and every one of you to take wide strides and stand firm.
As our previous predecessors have done, you are the epitome of change, within your respective households, communities, and workspaces.
I’d like to leave a quote; “The preservation of freedom is not the task of soldiers alone. The whole nation has to be strong.”

celebrations at Huntersfield stadium in KatleHong.
Freedom Day is commemorated to honour those unsung heroes and heroines who fought for our freedom and paved the way for an equal, representative, non-racial nation.
This year marks the 29th anniversary of South Africa’s first democratic elections and we also commemorate the 27th anniversary of the enactment of the Constitution as the supreme law of our country.
Premier Lesufi said in his message: “As we commemorate this day, let us remember the multitudes of people who sacrificed their lives for us to enjoy the freedom we enjoy
today whilst we work tirelessly in defence of the gains we have made since the dawn of democracy.
As the provincial government, we are mindful that we are only partially free until we successfully eradicate the triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality in our province. We will continue to focus our energy and efforts on ensuring that all Gauteng residents equally experience freedom’s economic and social benefits.”
Minister Lindiwe Zulu: “It is important for us to thank those who have kept the history that brought us where we are today alive. We also thank those who continue to keep the name of Charlotte Maxeke alive”.

The programme commenced with a prayer at Maxeke’s former home which then followed by a wreath laying ceremony for the icon at the Nancefield Cemetery and a visit to the Charlotte Maxeke Community Garden in Kiptown, Soweto. The day’s proceedings concluded with a church service the A.M.E Church in Diepkloof, with the service focused on “The Role of Church in Society”.
The Gauteng Provincial Government’s collaboration with the Charlotte Mannya Maxeke Institute will expand in the future through the implementation of annual development initiatives relating to role played by Charlotte Maxeke in contribution to uplifting the community and heritage preservation.

By: Staff ReporterAs anticipation continues to build for the upcoming 2023 Netball World Cup, Gauteng hosted the provincial Schools Mini Netball World Cup Festival in Soweto on Saturday, 06 May 2023.
Held at the Elkah Stadium in Rockville, the tournament saw school teams from across the province each representing countries that will be participating in the Netball World Cup in the under 11 age group for mainstream schools, and under 14 for Learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN) for the deaf and those with Severe Intellectual Disability (SID).
Thembu Primary School (Pimville), who played under Whales, emerged as the mainstream school champions of the day, while Phiri Special School (Soweto), who represented England, and the Ekurhuleni School for the Deaf (Katlehong) playing as South Africa, took first place gold in their respective LSEN categories.
As the LSEN winners of the festival, Phiri Special School and the Ekurhuleni School for the Deaf netball teams, along with three other selected school teams, Hoërskool Dr. E.G. Jansen (Boksburg), Sikhululekile Secondary School (Soshanguve), and Poelano Secondary School (Evaton), will have the exciting opportunity to attend the Netball World Cup in Cape Town between 28 July and 06 August 2023.
Organised by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, with support from the Gauteng Department of Education, the mini tournament was a celebration of the upcoming world cup that will be hosted in South Africa for the first time, raising awareness and excitement for the games and encouraging all Gauteng
citizens to support the SPAR Proteas who will be representing South Africa at the global championships.
The Gauteng Schools Netball Mini World Cup further promotes the participation and development of the girl child in sports from an early age, particularly those from schools within the Township, Informal Settlements and Hostels (TISH), a key focus area of the Gauteng Provincial Government.
In a message of support to all the young participants of the mini world cup tournament, the Director of Competitive Sport at the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Philasande Muvevi said:
“Today we are in Soweto replicating the world cup and we hope that in years to come it won’t be a replication but that Soweto will be part of the host townships for the world cup. Today you are representing your school, tomorrow you could be representing your district, the next day you could be representing your province and then your country. You are just as capable, and we are hoping that in years some of you will be part of the Proteas”.
The next phase of Gauteng’s drive of support for the world cup will be the trophy tour that will begin on the 30th of May and conclude on the 3rd of June.

Freedom Day is a day of remembrance and celebration. Freedom Day, observed annually on April 27th, commemorates the anniversary of South Africa's first non-racial election in 1994 and pays tribute to the country's freedom from Apartheid rule, in which the minority exercised prejudiced political power over the majority of the country. To me, this day also represents a day when we had the opportunity as South Africans to be free.

What will happen to my Spouse Pension if I pass away and my children are still minors?
The Spouse Pension is a monthly pension or annuity that is paid to the lawful spouse or approved life partner of a deceased member or pensioner of GEPF. If you die while in service or after you retired, as a member or pensioner of GEPF, your spouse (wife, husband or life partner) may be eligible to receive 50% or 75% (dependent
on the choice of the member in retirement) of your monthly pension or retirement annuity for the rest of their lives.
A member can choose to increase the Spouse Pension to 75% of his/ her retirement annuity by accepting a reduced gratuity and/or annuity on retirement. When your spouse dies, the Spouse Pension benefit ceases to exist. Spouse Pension cannot be transferred to any other person, including your
children (biological or adopted) or converted into any other benefit. This benefit is meant for spouse/s only. However, when you die as a GEPF member or pensioner, your child/children may qualify for the Child’s Pension as determined by the GEP law. Your children must be under the age of 22 years to qualify for this benefit. Disabled children qualify for the Child’s Pension benefit for the rest of their lives as determined by the GEP Law.

Our love is a compelling story about a mechanic who traveled to Durban to pursue an aspiring entrepreneur from his hometown, only to have his ambitions derailed by the city's allure and his own actions. Zuko Nodada directed the film, which also stars Fanele Zulu, Lungelo Mpangase, and Hungani Ndlovu.
Never too young to lead is a compilation of thought-provoking conversations with prominent South Africans about the need for the youth to find their places at decision-making tables. Despite being one of the youngest countries in the world, by demographic count, South Africa’s population of leaders in politics, in business, in the arts, the judiciary and most other sectors of our society tend to be drawn from older generations. In Never too young to lead , Lebogang Maile, himself a young leader, dares to challenge the status quo.
He does so by having hard-hitting conversations with prominent South Africans, among them DJ Oskido, Fasiha Hassan, Tembeka Ngcukaitobi, Mary Metcalfe, Sydney Mufamadi, Ayakha Melithafa and Tshidizi Marwala
