OPENING DOORS
It was a busy season Sacred Heart Academy Celebrates 60 Years The celebration of Sacred Heart’s upcoming 60th anniversary began in January with a special event reserved especially for alumnae. Alumnae were invited back for a chance to visit classrooms and other old “haunts,” and were treated to prize drawings, a martini bar, and a sneak preview of plans for the upcoming 60th Anniversary festivities. One of the highlights of the evening was the unveiling of exciting new plans for upgrading the school’s science labs.

Renovation Project The Sacred Heart community gathered on October 30, 2005, to celebrate the dedication of the newly renovated Provincialate building. Archbishop of Hartford Henry Mansell presided over an evening prayer service in the Sacred Heart Chapel that was followed by a reception with music offered by SHA students. During the afternoon the general public was invited to tour the facilities, which include a new Technology Center, state-of-the-art classrooms, and expanded administrative offices. Approximately 1,000 people attended the celebrations.

Alumnae at the Musical This year’s Alumnae Afternoon at the Musical was held on Sunday, November 13. Following a noon reception in the Lecture Hall, alumnae attended a matinee production of The Sound of Music. Proceeds from the event went to the Alumnae Scholarship Fund.
Homes for the Holidays SHA’s first House and Seasonal Decorations tour, held on December 3, 2005, was an overwhelming success. Over 500 visitors toured the five showcase North Haven homes adorned for the holidays, and returned to the campus for a visit to the Holiday Boutique. In all, $15,000 was raised to benefit the Academy. Featured here is the Somma home with decorations by Remy of R.S.A. Interiors.

Alumnae Reunion Saturday, September 24 saw over 90 alumnae return to campus for Alumnae Day ’05. Attendees had an opportunity to tour the new Technology Center, classrooms, office spaces and conference room. After the liturgy in the Main Chapel, members of the Class of ’55 were inducted into the Sacred Heart Academy Golden Alumnae Association. The day closed with a cocktail reception in the courtyard. Plans are now underway for
Alumnae Reunion Day ’06 for class years ending in 1 or 6. If you’d like to help in planning, please contact Alumnae Director Sr. Mary Anne at (203) 288-2309, ext. 313, or email alumnae@sha-excelsior.org.

TRADITIONS
Family Traditions The Mazzariello family keeps its ties to SHA alive. Presently a junior, Lauren ’07, is pictured ABOVE with Bishop Mancaluso of the Archdiocese of Hartford and her aunt Katie Lawlor Armstrong ’77. ABOVE CENTER Lauren’s aunt Tara Lepore Lawlor ’86. ABOVE RIGHT is Lauren’s father, SHA
Advisory Board member Michael Mazzariello with his older daughter Kristen Mazzariello ’05 and wife Jeanne
Not long ago, we published a list of families who had entrusted three or more daughters to SHA. That article generated so much enthusiasm that we were inspired to examine our alumnae files for more family connections. We were particularly struck by the number of alumnae who have daughters, nieces or sisters attending SHA today. The presence of these young women at the Academy is a testament to the importance that families place on values learned here, and to their desire to ensure that the SHA tradition endures.

SHA Science Students Present Research Five Sacred Heart Academy seniors traveled to the International Genomics Sequencing and Analysis Conference in Hilton Head, South Carolina in October to present the results of genetic research they conducted last year as part of a school-wide study of osteoporosis. Using funds from a $20,000 grant awarded by the Vernal W. and Florence Bates Foundation, students in last year’s biotechnology class were able to sequence two genes taken from cow DNA. The only high school students invited to the conference, seniors Courtney DeCarlo, Aislinn Hinckley, Emily Panza, Brianne Puklin and Megan Treichel presented a poster of their work. Five other members of the class, last year’s seniors Jenna DeMarseilles ’05, Pilar Gonzales ’05, Alex Sanseverino ’05, Lauren Uscinski ’05 and Lynn Vollero ’05 were unable to attend. The students’ work is also posted on the government’s website for the National Center for Biotechnology, or GenBank, making it available for use by working scientists.

Technology is part of everyday routine at SHA. With school-wide wireless internet access, students and teachers alike use laptops and smartboards as easily as they once did pencils and chalkboards. The result: stateof-the-art teaching and learning that will ensure SHA graduates are prepared to take on the challenges of the 21st century.

The Scientist, November 7, 2005 “Bioscience has flourished at Sacred Heart.” “Megan Treichel, a senior at Sacred Heart Academy. . . . and several collaborators presented their sequence of the genes associated with osteoporosis from Bos taurus, the domestic cow. . . . In addition to getting their names in GenBank—see entries DQ114140 and DQ114141—the girls got a serous boost of confidence from the attention given them by high-profile scientists.” [From an article describing the presentation at the national GSAC Conference by Sacred Heart students under the direction of Sr. Mary Jane Paolella. The presentation was on two partial sequences for the collagen receptor and calcitonin receptor. Sacred Heart Academy was the only high school in the country invited to present to the GSAC and is the only high school in the country whose results are listed in the United States’ GenBank.]
