2. TRAINING IN CONCENTRATION
2. TRAINING IN CONCENTRATION (MENTAL DEVELOPMENT) – (SKILLFUL EFFORT, MINDFULNESS, AND CONCENTRATION)
―I know of no single thing more conducive to great harm than an unrestrained and undeveloped mind. I know of no single thing more conducive to great benefit than a restrained and developed mind.‖

With the first training in ethical conduct we are laying a wholesome foundation for stabilizing the mind. The second training in concentration involves calming and cultivating the mind in order to allow its innate wisdom to arise. In order to do this we must develop several related skills:
a. Skillful effort b. Skillful mindfulness c. Skillful concentration
As stated earlier, none of these trainings are very effective when practiced in isolation. It becomes apparent during practice how each skill aids the others and forms an integrated system for transformation. When the 3 trainings are each developed and practiced together we find a very powerful system for living.
