Part of constructing wisdom on the path is dhamma study. We need to inform our practice by laying the intellectual foundations upon which the intuitive insights will develop. Available forms of study include dharma talks (live or recorded and distributed on the internet), books, journals, websites, and even movies. For many practitioners, the study of the Pali suttas is invaluable. These are considered the oldest complete record of the Buddha‟s teachings. There are many excellent English translations of the suttas in existence. One can start with reading a single sutta, a thematic anthology of suttas, and/or take a live or online sutta study class. A brief guide to sutta study is available from this author. Residential study retreats are beneficial and are becoming more available. It is helpful to dedicate a portion of time each day to studying the Dhamma and then integrating what is learned into one‟s meditation practice. See the “Additional Resources” (page 116) for suggestions for further study.
