Record Labels Further Research

Other Bits and Peices of Influence I’ve found around Record Labels, Bands or Single Releases which I like elements within. Whether that be Design, Format, Process or Finish.

Astropol This beautiful packaging for band Astropol’s vinyl release is really unique in the fact that it focuses so much on the colour of the vinyl and uses that as a focal point. The outer packaging is muted in black and white and the inner sleeve is clear with these dots of black splatters which overlay the colour when the vinyl sits inside. Beautiful Process and Packaging.

White Lies (Limited Edition) Big Active created a number of limited edition vinyls for single releases of band White Lies, “Death” and “Farewell to the Fairground”. These took on the same branding style with the band loog at the top and name at the bottom, bbut altered colour and the use of shapes to create these beautiful compositions. Foiling was also used as well as coloured viynls to add quality and a sense of uniqueness.

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs Big Active also created a selection of limited edition vinyl releases for band TEED. Cotton was sewed into the sleeves in patterns to create this really unique look, over the top of photographs. These where then scanned and retouched for the commerical releases.

Forrests Asthetically I like the look of this release from Forrests and with the use of the sticker to add a vibrant colour and seal on the record, you can see how this could be applied to a branding system. Kanye Wests’ “Yeezus” uses a similar simplified technique.

Ministry of Sound MOS use their logo to give a solid instantly recognisable brand throughout a number of music releases. They use their logo as the main focal point of every release, but alter it slightly to represent the musci release. For example the 80’s CD is made form Neon and the “Chilled Sessions” are made from ice. Etc. Etc. Solid Campaign and Brand System.

New Media I love this packaging for triple album New Media. The clear cover and inside cover are printed with different shapes which make up the type “new media when placed together. Great concept and execution.

Dreams A Simple, but nice record sleeve for the band dreams, using pattern and colours seems to be effective when working with modern electo-pop movements.

Vintage Records I’ve also been looking at a lot of vintage record covers from different eras of the past. A lot of them tend to have this stroked white box in one of the corners of the record, including a logo and label code which is quite a nice asthetic from old. It could be something that is re-invented and treated to work well.
