Context The Student Cookbook is a concept that has evolved from a group of creative’s living together throughout 3 years of University and trying to cook group meals that are pleasing both in taste and visually, whilst having very few ingredients and for not a lot of money. The problem stemmed from coming into contact with many existing Student cookbooks on the market that we all felt were unrealistic for a Student to actually want to and afford to make. Through initial research, we found that there is consistently far too many ingredients, with a really high cost which is always going to put Students off.
Brief The challenge is to create a new and exciting Student Cookbook which is not only cheap to buy, but includes recipes that are also cheap to make, with little ingredients, little fuss and maximum taste. The book will also need to link with Social Media in some way to encourage Students to cook meals together and share them across a network they are already familiar with such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
Preparation/Research suggestions Student Cookbooks usually get given as gifts by Friends and Family either just before or along the journey at University and also bought by the Students themselves often in a panic realising they have to cook for themselves. This proves the market is huge and very competitive. Lots of research will have to take place into existing Student Cookbooks to see what works and what doesn’t. Layout, Type and Photography are key areas, which need to be researched thoroughly and constantly focussed on throughout the project. Meals will have to be thought out, carefully planned and put into a timetable to keep on top of the massive project. Each member of the team will have to be given a specific role in order for the work to be spread evenly and ultimately to play on peoples strength for a much more successful final product. Amount of Recipes the book holds? Amount of Pages? Sections within the Book? Social media will need to be focussed on heavily. Hash tags can be used within the copy of the book for example and online groups or a website could be proposed or created.
Evidence – for this project students should submit Regular Blog Posts on Process, Art Direction, Photography and Layout Development. A Final Cookbook with a small Promotional Campaign to support it. Interactive & Web Based content which can be used as a platform to raise awareness and ʻbuzzʼ around the product.
