Basic Typography Re-cap Research

History of Type How Type has evolved from Blackletter to modern Sans Serif. It will be important to consider what type of type will be used for each individual and this can be based on traits in their handwriting or within their personality, which is derived from their handwriting.

Roman Type Roman type is typically upright as appose to italic or backslanted type. This could also be determined by handwriting styles to what the final typeface comes out like. If the subjects handwriting is upright, it might use a roman style typeface ans vice versa.

Anatomy The anatomy of type is obvioulsy playing a huge part in this brief. When designing the typefaces, This will be essential to create a typeface that can be readable, funtional, legible and workable. Things like the x-heigh, ascenders, decenders, bowls, crossbars and everything else can be directly influenced and determined by a persons handwriting. It’s key to our forumla.

Type Families Type families are an important thing to consider when creating our own typefaces. Is this something that we are going to do for every typeface. We have to consider workload and how eaay it is to transfer a typeface to differetn weights and styles. Something that needs further research.

Character Spacing & Kerning Masive thing to consider is kerning and how the typefaces will look when kerned in a certain way. It needs to be readable and legible, and be kerned to perfection.

Leading Again, leading is important too. Are the typeface we create going to be able to be used as copy, and then leading is important if this is considered.

Figures, Marks, Setting Little things to consider when designing a typeface are figures such as numerals. Will they be text lining or dropped like old lining style. Also how will glyphs look such as quotation marks and apostrophes. Newer glyphs such as the ‘@’ symbol ans how that will be set within the line of text.

Ligatures Ligatures help the type flow easily and avoid clashing between characters such as an ‘f’ and an ‘i’. This will have to be considered too, to flow with any typeface that is designed.
