EQUESTRIAN NEWS BRIEFS

AHC REGULATORY UPDATES Pyrethrin Regulation Changes at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) The EPA released a Proposed Interim Decision in October concerning pyrethrin, the preeminent ingredient used in equine fly spray products. This document proposed a ban on the use and sales of hand operated trigger style fly spray applicators and the use of misting systems in housing and event spaces. This ban was in response to extreme assumptions on the part of the EPA concerning the amount of product used daily in our industry. In addition, the EPA was operating under the false impression of alternative fly spray products being widely available. AHC staff collaborated with USDA personnel, livestock industry groups, and fly spray manufacturers to draft multiple independent comments, which have all been submitted. The EPA announced they will make a decision based on the comments submitted in 2024. No changes will be implemented before then. United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Import Rule Announcement The USDA Released a proposed rule on import regulations for horses on November 29th. The proposed rule will amend Several regulations, including the number of days horses exported from regions free of contagious equine metritis (CEM) are allowed to spend in a CEM effective region and reenter the United States without testing from 60 days to 90 days. Other changes include new requirements for health certificates, Canadian import regulations, new requirements for Caribbean horses, and various verbiage and contextual language changes. AHC staff is collaborating with importer members to assure that none of these changes significantly hinder their ability to move horses safely and cost-effectively. Hemp By-product Effort with Association of American Feed Control Officials The AAFCO approached the American Horse Council to solicit support and input for their official position statement concerning future legislation allowing for the use of hemp and hemp by-products in feed ingredients. They advocate for research, development, and official application to AAFCO

and the FDA for review and approval of any hemp feed additives. This position directly falls in line with the feedback shared with staff following the 2019 AHC Annual Meeting, where this issue was first introduced to members. For more info., contact Cliff Williamson at cwilliamson@horsecouncil.org

MI 4-H OFFERING FINANCIAL FITNESS AND FUN PROGRAM FOR YOUTH Michigan 4-H is offering Financial Fitness and Fun sessions for youth through live online and self-guided formats. Being involved in a financial literacy program can prepare youths for lifelong financial success. According to Next Generation Personal Finance (NGPF), high school graduates with guaranteed financial education are 21% less likely to carry a balance on a credit card while in college, use subsidized student loans 13% more often, and are 3.5% more likely to submit the free application for federal student aid (FAFSA). Students who receive financial education are also less likely to fall prey to high-cost predatory loans than their peers who don't have access to a personal finance curriculum. A national study by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) found that nearly half of Americans (49%) who have received more than 10 hours of financial education report spending less than they

earn, compared with 36% of those people who received less than 10 hours of financial education. According to the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, a national evaluation of a teen financial education program showed that young people who were involved in a financial education curriculum for as little as 10 hours not only significantly increased their understanding of money management, but also improved their financial behavior in the ensuing months. Michigan State University Extension and Michigan 4-H have embraced providing financial literacy education through a grant from the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. The 4-H Financial Fitness and Fun program offers youth the opportunity to learn about setting financial goals, saving, budgeting, banking basics, credit, and much more through ten financial education modules packed with fun lessons, activities, and games. Online modules are offered for an interactive self-guided course using Nearpod. Live online sessions will be offered again starting in late February 2022. Keep an eye on the MSU Extension calendar. The first 100 youth to complete all ten sessions either in a live session or through Nearpod lesson on the website, will receive a $50 incentive. MSU Extension and Michigan 4-H youth development help prepare young people for successful futures. As a result of career exploration and workforce preparation activities, thousands of Michigan youth are better equipped to make important decisions about their professional future, ready to contribute to the workforce, and able to take fiscal responsibility in their personal lives. For more information or resources on career exploration, workforce preparation, financial education, or entrepreneurship, contact 4-HCareerPrep@msu.edu or visit us online at: https://extension.msu.edu

USDF CONGRATULATES NEWLY ELECTED OFFICERS TO THE 2022 EXECUTIVE BOARD The United States Dressage Federation™ (USDF) is pleased to welcome the newest officers to the USDF Executive Board for the 2022 term. Elections for the position of treasurer and president were held during the Board of Governors General Assembly (BOG), held during the 2021 Adequan®/ USDF Annual Convention. Entering into the convention, two candidates had been nominated for the position of president, Kevin Reining of Region 7 and Steven Schubert of Region 8, and only incumbent Lorraine Musselman had been nominated to the position of treasurer. As is permitted by USDF Bylaws, Iris Berdrow of Region 8 nominated former USDF President George Williams, from the floor of the BOG, to the position of president for a new term. Upon the nomination and acceptance, Kevin Reinig chose to rescind his candidacy in favor of supporting George, meaning Kevin Reining will remain in his current role as USDF Vice President for the remainder of his current term. USDF welcomes George and Lorraine back to the Executive Board and extends its sincere thanks and congratulations to all nominees on their dedication to the federation and sport and are sure that all will continue to be vital parts of the USDF structure moving forward. Other election results will be communicated once all have been officially verified. For more information on USDF elections, or the nomination and voting process, please visit the USDF website www.usdf.org, or contact nominations@usdf.org.

HORSE ASSOCIATION & TRAIL RIDERS NEWS Fort Custer Horse Friends Association

BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS ASSOCIATION As we close out 2021, we're actively planning for the New Year. Needless to say, we're hopeful that 2022 will bring us back to some semblance of normal, but only time will tell. We're in the process of planning our events for next year and no major changes are anticipated. In the past our outdoor events have always been popular and well received, so we firmly believe in the old adage: “If it ain't broke, don't fix it.” Still, we're always open to change and given Ma Nature's mood on any given day and other circumstances, we have to be ready to alter a scheduled event. We really have our fingers crossed on planning for our annual banquet, “The Spring Fling.” As we have reported many times before, this event is co-hosted by the Pinckney Trail Riders and because of Covid, we haven't been able to hold it for some time. Since many of us belong to both clubs, it has always been all the more special. We are hoping that the festivities will not be affected this time around. As this is being written, we've had a taste of winter weather, but history tells us that temperatures can still go up somewhat and the clouds can give way to blue skies. That means that the trails at Brighton can still be visited, so an enjoyable ride is not out of the question. Mark Delaney, BTRA President

FORT CUSTER HORSE FRIENDS ASSOC. Hello Trail Riders! Well, 2021 is over, good, bad, or otherwise! The good: our Fall Equestrian Campout was a huge success with a packed event area including many old and new friends. The weather was good for campers and trail exploration. Food was enjoyed by all, breakfasts and potluck supper. Money was raised for continued work, maintenance and improvements at the Park once again. Thank-you to everyone on the board who worked so hard to set this event up, cook, build fires, clean campsites, and generally help to make everything run smoothly. Thank-you to all that attended the campout and continue to support our efforts to have one of the nicest places to ride and get together with friends and horses! Plans are in the talking phase of extending the picket area for the horses in each campsite further back into the trees to access more shade for the animals. It will require clearing of scrub type trees and bringing in sand and gravel for fill around the picket areas. The DNR has already agreed this is doable with the right paperwork to be submitted and approved. There was discussion at the November meeting of having electricity for the campsites. This could take approximately 2 years to work with the DNR with all it will entail. The board feels these improvements would be a big draw to campers in the hot weather months. This way horses would have shade on the picket lines and air conditioners could be used for campers. Discussion of planting trees was ruled out as it would not be feasible for the club to support watering, maintenance, and care for the success of young trees. 2022 will be an exciting year to see what we can make plans for future improvements. The Park is open, the trails are groomed and cleared. Winter is a beautiful time to explore Fort Custers’ wandering woods, prairies, viewing lake vistas, and crossing meandering creeks. Come and see what you are missing! Visit our website www.fchfa.org for news, riding buddies, and calendar of events. Call Nancy at 269-967-3613 for questions. See you on the trails! WESTERN DRESSAGE ASSOC. OF MI It's 2022 and snow and ice are part of our lives as we plan for the coming spring and summer events. As you make those plans, I have a few things you will want to add to your list! WDAMI will be at the Michigan Horse Expo, March 11-13, 2022. We hope you will be able to drop by and visit with us there. Also be sure to make a note of our regular WDAMI shows: Dressage at Waters Edge, April 22-May 13, with videos due by June 10. Sunflower Horse Show June 10July 1, with videos due by July 15. The Battle of the Saddles, July 15-August 12, with videos due by August 26. We have added a versatility award for all three shows this year, as well as a drawing for door prizes if you enter all three shows. Finally, please do not forget to sign up for our upcoming Awards Banquet which will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on February 26, 2022, at the Holiday Inn and Suites in Mount Pleasant. Hope to see you there. I would like to reflect back to 2021 for a moment and say thank you to Wyn Farm and to Sunrise Equestrian Sports for holding USEF Lite shows last year. What a great opportunity for our members. I also want to thank Spotlight Horse Shows for supporting and managing our online WDAA recognized horse shows. In news from WDAA, the new Western Dressage tests are out and, for the first time, have added a series of tests for Level 5. Shows are still allowed to use the old tests until March 1. So, if you are entering a show

between now and the end of February, you will want to be sure to ask the show's management whether they are using the 2017 or 2022 tests. Because it is the start of a new year, you will also want to check out the rules for Western Dressage in the USEF rule book and make a note of new and changed rules. New rules and changes will be in red print, which make it easy to discover what is new this year. Our tip of the month comes from page 197 of the book “When Two Spines Align” by Beth Baumert: Corners are dreaded by inexperienced riders but are the saviors of experienced riders. In fact, experienced riders “prepare for the corner” when the corner isn't even there, just so they can rebalance the horse. Try to make friends with your corners. Each time you let your horse “takeover” in the corners or fall in, you lose him a little. Each time you can confirm the bend before the corner and then turn him with your outside aids without losing the bend or the line of travel, you improve your horse's balance and the mobility of his forehand. WDAMI is looking for sponsors for our yearend awards and educational events. If you would be willing to help by sponsoring or by helping us to find sponsors, please contact us by email at: infowdami@gmail.com. If you would like to volunteer or offer other services we may need, please contact us. We can always use the help. Please don't forget to renew your membership. Thank you for your support. Be safe, have fun, enjoy your equine partner and exercise acts of kindness to all. Until next time. Safe Riding, Suzanne Morisse, WDAMI President

Cost-Cutting for Horse Owners By Lisa Skylis | Email: skylisli@msu.edu As any horse owner could tell you, taking proper care of a horse is a significant investment in both your time and money. Although their equines 'pay' them daily in affection, the majority of horse owners do not generate income from their horses and are intent to keep them only as companions. Whether you are encountering tough financial times or just want to stick to a budget, the beginning of a new year is the perfect time for horse owners to explore and implement options to reduce the cost of keeping their horses. When times get tough financially on the farm, the tough get creative! This month, read on to discover some cost-cutting practices for the following areas of horse ownership: health care, hoof care, and travel. In the next issue of Saddle Up, expect to learn more about reducing costs in feeding, housing, and more! Health Care After feeding, health care is certainly the most expensive aspect of horse ownership. Saving money while maintaining a healthy herd is not done by cutting corners on routine health care visits or with DIY farrier care. Instead, horse owners should be concentrating on preventing health issues and keeping their horse's long-term health the priority. These are a few cost-cutting methods to consider for your horse's health care in 2022: - Maintain regular health check-ups with your veterinarian, equine dentist, and farrier. - Perform fecal egg counts (approximately $20-25 per horse) to allow you to 'target' deworming treatments to your horses that are high shedders. - Ensure that your horse is up-to-date on the five core vaccines: Tetanus, Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis, Western Equine Encephalomyelitis, West Nile, and Rabies. - If you own or have access to a trailer, save the expense of a farm call and bring your horse to your vet for their next routine visit. - If you haven't already, learn to give intramuscular shots and oral medications to your horse. - Keep your horse's health records up-to-date and include sections on medications, vaccinations, deworming, dental work, farrier work, veterinary visits, and significant injuries. Proper record keeping might even help you avoid the gut-wrenching experience and expense of emergency veterinary care because you are more likely to take notice of subtle health changes in your horse before they become catastrophic. - Become familiar with your horse's 'normal', including their vitals, behavior, and eating and drinking habits. This will be helpful in determining the seriousness of an injury or illness and will increase the odds of catching the signs of a health issue early. It should be noted that drastic changes to the health care you provide your horse are not advised. You should never cut costs in the following circumstances: emergency veterinary care, core vaccinations, routine veterinary visits, the quality of forage you buy, using trusted professionals for farrier care, dental work, or other health-related care. Hoof Care Although slightly less frequent, your horse will still need regular trimming during the winter season; do not underestimate the imJANUARY 2022 • C & C PUBLISHING, INC. ©2022

portance of maintaining your horse's regular hoof care. If not cared for properly throughout the colder months, your horse's overgrown and brittle hooves will prove much more difficult to be shod when spring comes. Save your farrier the challenge and save yourself the extra expense – follow these simple solutions for winter hoof care: - Maintain a consistent trimming schedule with your farrier. - Examine your horse's hooves for cracks, signs of thrush, or ice damage on a regular basis. - For seasonal riders, ask your farrier about removing your horse's shoes in the 'off season'. Unless they are ridden often or need the extra traction, many horses are safe to go shoeless during the winter months. - If your horse remains shoed, ask your farrier about adding a rubber bubble pad or rim pad to keep snowballs at bay and reduce your horse's risk of injury from falling. - Regardless of their shoes or lack of shoes, always work with your farrier to correct hoof problems in their early stages. This will save your horse from excessively stressing their muscles and joints and will save you the cost of treating a more severe health issue. Whatever your plans for the season might be, make sure to include these hoof maintenance hacks in your horse's 2022 care routine. Proper hoof care is always 'in season' and your horse's hooves will continue to grow and change as the seasons change. Travel When you are on-the-go at your next clinic or show, keep these cost-saving tips in mind: - Bring your own shavings and hay for stalling – skip purchasing it at the show at an inflated cost. - Either learn the skill yourself or make friends with a tailor. That used show shirt you bought at a bargain price from the consignment shop will only present well if it fits well, so tailor it to your measurements. - Learn to do your own banding and braiding. At the very least, it will save you the cost of hiring someone else and it could even be a way to cover some of the expenses of showing. Another, less obvious, method to save money during times of frequent travel is to implement some simple biosecurity measures on the go. Biosecurity includes any hygienic practices – from hand washing to vaccination – that are intended to prevent introducing (20)

contagious diseases to your horse. These are some biosecurity basics to keep your herd healthy and ensure that the only thing you bring home from this show season is ribbons: - Do not travel with your unvaccinated horses or horses displaying signs of illness such as unusual coughing, fever, no appetite, etc. - If possible, do not share a trailer with horses from other barns and use your own trailer. Otherwise, clean out any soiled shavings and manure from the trailer's last journey. Then, thoroughly disinfect the trailer and let it air out before loading your horse. Repeat this cleaning and disinfecting process after you are done using the trailer. - At the venue, do not share equipment (tack, blankets, grooming tools, buckets) or communal water troughs. Alternatively, if you are kind enough to loan out equipment, keep the borrowed equipment away from your horse until you've cleaned it. - When using a stall that has been occupied by other horses, completely empty the stall of any used bedding and consider disinfecting areas of the stall that your horse might slobber on. - During the event, keep the nose-to-nose contact between your horse and other horses to a minimum. This is a common way that infectious diseases such as strangles spread. As for yourself, wash your hands or use hand sanitizer often during the day and particularly after handling another horse. - After returning home, monitor your horse for any unusual health signs and keep them away from the rest of the herd (particularly

in indoor settings) for two weeks. Call your veterinarian immediately if your horse develops any concerning symptoms, including decreased appetite, diarrhea, nasal discharge, fever, signs of pain or discomfort, etc. Now more than ever before, simple biosecurity steps are crucial for keeping your herd 'healthy as a horse.' These practical management practices limit the transmission and spread of diseases that are brought by animals or people onto your farm. Although at first they might seem too demanding, these biosecurity practices can prevent a major infectious disease outbreak on your farm and, ultimately, save you time and money. Getting Your Horse Back in Shape

Winter Concerns for Horses By Dr. Joanna Bronson | http://bronsonvetservices.com/ Horses’ seasonal transitions into the winter months begins in midto-late August when they begin to grow their winter hair coats. Our preparations seem to come overnight. Fortunately, horses generally adapt to weather changes rather well, if they are provided with adequate nutrition, shelter from wind, cold, and wet weather, and given plentiful access to clean water. However, even with these provisions, winter dehydration is a common problem. Signs of dehydration include an increased resting heart rate, frequent, shallow breathing, skin elasticity (the pinch test), and the lack of moist and shiny gum tissue. Some horses do not like to drink cold water when they are cold. Others hesitate to drink warmer water. It is a balancing act to keep water palatable, but insufficient water consumption can affect a horse’s ability to digest his grain and hay. Among the more frightening issues is the possibility of colic. Hay and grain are essentially drier than grass and plenty of water is needed to keep a horse’s system functioning properly. Also, in the winter, horses need to consume more food as their bodies need more calories to stay warm. Feeding good quality free-choice hay is ideal, as horses can generate a continual heat source to stay warm. Hay, not grain is what keeps horses warm. When feeding grain, presoaking it in warm water can make grain easier to digest and help prevent choke. Senior horses are sometimes more finicky about eating in the winter. Feeding easily digestible food and adding some tidbits such as carrots, molasses, or applesauce might tempt them to eat. Changes in diet and dehydration can lead to weight loss. All food changes should be made gradually. Horses that are blanketed can easily hide weight loss, so it is important to check under their blankets on a regular basis to see how they are holding their weight. Long, shaggy coats can also disguise weight loss. It is important to feel a horse’s ribs to check for weight loss. Winter is not the time to postpone regular hoof trims and care. A horse’s hooves do grow slower in the winter, but regular trims are still necessary, especially with wet conditions that can trap bacteria and create the ideal conditions for the development of thrush or abscesses. It is very tempting to keep our horses blanketed, clean and stalled during the winter months, especially if they are old or young. This is not a good idea, as movement helps create body heat and helps a horse’s joints stay healthy and flexible. Movement is essential, especially senior horses, as inactivity can create a loss of mobility in a very short amount of time and take much longer to return. By early November, any vitamin E that had been present in the pasture grass is now gone. It is prudent to ask your veterinarian for an approved supplement for your area. Southern lower Michigan is noted for its’ lack of Selenium and Vitamin E in its soil. Respiratory problems are always a concern as closed barns with a lack of ventilation can aggravate pre-existing conditions such as Heaves and COPD. It is always smart to keep horses outside when cleaning stalls and to keep consistent air flow throughout the barn. This will also reduce the possibility of respiratory problems. If a barn has an odor, it needs more fresh air. Ice and snow can build up on a horse’s hooves causing slipping on smooth surfaces. Picking out hooves helps prevent slips and falls. Paddocks can become ice-skating rinks very quickly. Sanding, salting, and even spreading shavings can help provide traction. Winter may seem like a time to forgo brushing, but hidden skin problems can quickly develop into more severe problems. Scratches is caused by a mixture of fungi and bacteria. Scratches can become chronic and takes aggressive and ongoing care once it has developed. Wet, moist conditions and long fetlock hair aggravate the condition. Rain Rot also called Rain Scald most often develops from horses who have accumulated moisture on their backs that is not cleaned and dried. The bacteria that causes it can be treated with medication. Ringworm is infectious and is caused by a fungal organism. It can be contagious but is treatable. Hives can happen anytime of the year but in the winter can be caused by a change in bedding, blanket shampoo, supplements, or any number of things. A process of elimination can help prevent future outbreaks. Routine daily inspection should be routine year-round. Dr. Joanna Bronson graduated from MSU College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000 at the top of her class. Following graduation, she worked as an intern at a large equine referral practice in Cleveland, OH, specializing in lameness, surgery, and racetrack medicine. In 2005, she opened Bronson Veterinary Services in Coldwater, MI. What started as an ambulatory only practice, quickly grew to a fullservice equine, small animal hospital and surgical center. The now three doctor practice provides medical, surgical, reproductive, and preventative care services for Branch County and the surrounding area.

Innovative Stall Feeder Options By Lisa Kiley | https://www.cashmans.com/ Last month we discussed some different ways to save on feed when feeding hay outside. This month we will focus on some innovative options that make feeding inside of your stalls an easier process. There are a few key reasons why these products may be worth a try. One of the biggest reasons for looking at different styles of feeders is to help with feed cost savings. If you can employ a feeder that helps save feed, you will typically see a return on investment within a few months of feed bills. Additionally, many of the feeders that are made for horses are now looking at ways to help slow horses down when eating which is more natural and better for their digestive health. No Spill Feeders – There is usually one horse in every barn that likes to make sport out of flinging grain out of the feeder and onto the ground. Fortunately, there is a solution with several styles of no spill feeders. Some have just a simple lip that helps keep the grain from being easily knocked out. Other designs offer a rounded bottom that makes it harder for the horse to move the grain up the sides of the feeder. Feed saver rings can be added to some round feeders, to convert a standard feeder into a no spill in one of the most economical options. If your horse is spilling feed from the mouth, it may not be the feeder's fault – a dental check-up might be in order. Slow Feed Hay Nets – These feeders have a smaller opening than a standard hay net. These smaller openings will help slow down feeding, mimicking more natural grazing which is good for their digestive health and helps to curb boredom. When introducing your horse to a slow feed hay net, it is important that you take the time to slowly convert over from free choice to slow nets. Horses can get frustrated with not being able to get hay at their normal pace. The best way to do this is to put some hay into the net and still provide free choice hay. Slowly move the ratio until the horse gets used to eating out of the slow feeder. The bags are typically made of either a web, or nylon. Usually, web hay bags are going to hold up longer over time while nylon bags will need to be replaced more frequently, as they can be damaged by horses' teeth over time. When looking for slow feeder hay net, there are different size openings that you can get, but most are 1” to 2” openings. Hay Net Accessories – If you find it difficult to load your slow feed hay net or struggle when securing it in a way so your horse can't detach it and get caught up, you may want to invest in something that will aid with loading and/or mounting the hay net. There are some reasonable options that can help you load the nets, making the task instantly easier. There are products that mount to the wall and hold the hay net in such a way that it can be mounJANUARY 2022 • C & C PUBLISHING, INC. ©2022

ted lower to make eating out of nets more closely resemble natural grazing. Whenever choosing products like this, make sure that the edges are smooth and the net is installed properly to help minimize any chance that the horse will injure himself on the feeder. Frequently check the net and replace or repair if it is showing wear so that a larger hole in the net will not pose a risk to catching a leg. Stall Ground Feeders – These feed units are an innovative installation that is a natural slow feeder for your horse. In a way, they mimic a 'no spill' feeder for hay, they are deeper and contain the hay in a corner or wall style feeder. One of the most popular feeders like this allows the hay to be thrown into the feeder and the horse reaches in to get it, but can't fling it out. What assists with this is that on each side of the feeder is a container for grain and minerals, which will help to keep the hay in the feeder. The feeder can be fastened to the wall or left to free stand in a corner or along the wall. There are also other feeders with a similar concept that have a grill or webbing that slides over the top of the feeder that will additionally limit rate of speed of eating while keeping the hay from being spread all around the stall and wasted; as the horse eats, the grate or webbing retracts down to the bottom of the feeder without allowing the horse to get caught up in it. Stall Upgrades – There are also some helpful installations that can be made in the stall itself to make feeding time more efficient. Swing out feed doors are helpful at feeding time. While it is important to look in on your horse a few times a day and make sure they are in good health, a swing out feed door can make it easier to perform some of your chores. Swing out feed doors can help keep things neat and tidy and help avoid a horse that likes to grab hay or grain from you as you walk in the stall. Hay and grain feeders can be affixed to the swinging door itself or adjusted in such a way that you can fill the feeders in the stall when the door is open. Scoop sized grain opening situated above a grain feeder can also make grain feeding easy and efficient. Sometimes just a few innovative products can save time and money while leading to more efficiency in day to day chores. Palm Partnership Training™

How Horses Like To Learn By Lynn Palm | http://www.lynnpalm.com/ Hi, I am “My Royal Lark” also known to my friends as “Wills.” I am a handsome Appendix Quarter bay stallion and son of legendary “Rugged Lark.” I’m Lynn’s favorite partner, or at least I think so! We know that horses don’t talk…but Lynn is finally off of her computer and now it’s my turn to give you a horse’s perspective on training. Together with Lynn’s 40 plus years of professional experience in training horses and riders, we’ve come up with these pointers to help you be more successful in training your horse. Wills’ List of How Horses Like to Learn 1. We really like training sessions that are organized around a lesson plan. It gives our riders a structure to follow that helps us prepare, focus, and learn better. I think it helps them, too! 2. We like the first part of a lesson to include a warm up period. This allows us to stretch our muscles and warm up our joints. It is especially important if the weather is cold. A warm up helps us avoid injuries and gets our bodies prepared to participate to our fullest in the lesson. 3. Horses like a “mental” warm up before the real lesson starts, too. Get us in the mood to learn by reviewing different figures, transitions, or maneuvers that we do well. This reinforces past training and gets us thinking! 4. We like challenges, but introduce new lessons in small, easy steps that we can understand. We want to please you. A kind word or pat when we get a lesson right tells us we are on the right track. When we refuse or resist, we are showing you that we don’t understand the lesson you are introducing. We look to you to give us confidence to learn. When you are patient with us, it builds our trust in you. If you do this, we will give you back obedience and show you the same respect you give us. 5. At the end of our lesson go back to doing something that we do well. This gives us confidence and reinforces our partnership. 6. Finish up with a cool down period. This gives us the opportunity to stretch the muscles we used. We like having this quality time with you without having to concentrate on learning. 7. After we are back in our stall, most of us like to be groomed. It’s like having a massage after a workout! While some horses like grooming more than others, we all love to get a special treat like a carrot or apple from you. This tells us that you appreciate us. Give us a few kind words and a pet on the forehead or side of the neck and we will be anxious for our next lesson together! Follow my advice, your horse will love to learn and love you for it! Yours in partnership, “Wills” This Week…a reader contacted me with a question about a term in an article that she did not understand. I really appreciated hearing from her and encourage anyone who doesn’t understand a horsemen’s term I use, to ask me about it. The reader’s question was: What are tempi changes? I used this phrase to describe an exercise that I was learning to improve. Tempi changes are one of the most challenging disciplines that you can train your horse to do. To explain them, I first need to describe flying lead changes, which are the key component of tempi changes. JANUARY 2022 • C & C PUBLISHING, INC. ©2022

Flying lead changes are done at the canter. When a horse is on a right lead canter, the right front and hind pair of legs stretches further forward in stride than the left pair. When a flying lead change is asked by the rider, the horse switches to the left lead where his left front and hind leg pairs stretch further forward – without a change in cadence to his 3-beat canter. Tempi lead changes are sequences of flying lead changes, done at the canter, at a precise number of strides. Any increment of strides can make up a sequence of tempi changes. For example, tempi changes at 5 strides mean 5 strides of canter on one lead, a flying lead change, then 5 strides of canter on the other lead, and repeat. The most advanced tempi changes are done every stride. If we use our example of starting on the right lead, a single stride tempi change would be 1 stride right lead, flying change,1 stride left lead, flying change, 1 stride right lead, flying change, and so on. Thanks to this reader for her question. It reminds me of the importance of following Will’s suggestions…keep training (and explanations) simple and use clear, small steps to accomplish your goals. Until then, follow your dreams, Lynn

Dogs and Horses By Valley Vet Supply | https://www.valleyvet.com/ Whether working cattle or trotting happily alongside you and your horse on the trails – if you have a dog, life on the farm or time at the barn, means you’re likely never alone. And while it may seem commonplace, cattle dogs and barn dogs live a unique lifestyle, being nearby 1,000-pound livestock, horses, and heavy farm equipment. Their lifestyle requires grit, wit, and intelligence. It is crucial to help guard your dog’s safety and well-being. Dealing With On-Farm Pet Injuries When it comes to injuries stemming from large animals and livestock, they can range from mild, requiring dogs only rest for a few days, to life threatening. “We’ve seen dogs with head trauma from horses or cows, and even limb amputations after getting too close to a mower bar. We’ve definitely seen some things,” said Paul DeMars, DVM, DABVP, clinical associate professor at Oklahoma State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. All dogs (even those well-trained) can be at risk for injuries stemming from horses and livestock, as their instincts ultimately play the largest role in their behavior. “My dogs are well-trained agility dogs. They are always good and are well-trained not to chase horses. However, I had a dog that fell victim [to injury from livestock],” said Kris Hiney, Ph.D., Oklahoma State University associate professor and Extension equine specialist. Dr. Hiney was out one evening feeding, with one of her three agilitytrained dogs by her side – a Border Collie named Avispa – when her horse at the other end of the field began galloping not toward her and the feed bucket, but straight toward her dog. She gave her command for Avispa to recall, but his Border Collie instincts kicked in, and he crouched into the grass. As the horse neared, the horse lowered his head and curled up his front legs, intentionally coming down directly onto Avispa. Dr. Hiney quickly bundled up Avispa and went to an emergency veterinary clinic. Thankfully, he pulled through and is fine today. “The reality of horses and dogs is something not to take lightly,” said Dr. Hiney. “Some owners may not realize how badly a dog can get hurt. A lot of horses are dangerous with dogs. Cattle do not seek them out as much, unless dogs are in their space. It is 100% instinctual, as even well-trained dogs who do this for a living can get kicked, and they can be severely injured when working cattle.” Should your dog experience an injury, Dr. DeMars recommends you monitor, immediately, if they are up on all legs and mobile, favoring any limbs, experiencing any seizures, and completely conscious. “If the animal is unconscious, get them to your veterinarian right away,” said Dr. DeMars. “Even if an animal is up on all four legs, there still could be internal bleeding, and he could be falling over two hours later, dead. Taking your dog to your veterinarian is always the best answer.” Steps to take, should your dog be injured: Share pictures with your veterinarian. Before driving to the clinic, use your cell phone to take pictures of the injury or wound, and share with your veterinarian. This will help the office prepare for your dog’s arrival and for swift treatment. Have a 24-hour emergency veterinary clinic on speed dial. If your dog experiences head trauma, he requires precise care and JANUARY 2022 • C & C PUBLISHING, INC. ©2022

likely, 24-hour monitoring, which is not always an option at a primary veterinary clinic. For such cases, it is best to immediately take your dog to the nearest emergency veterinary clinic or University veterinary school. Refer to your stocked first-aid kit. Assist wounds to help stop any bleeding. If it is a leg injury, wrap the leg just as you would wrap a horse's leg (apply a sterile lube, then gauze and then cover with vet wrap or bandages, going in the direction of front to back with gentle support – not too tight or too loose). If your dog experiences heavy bleeding, he could be suffering from a ruptured artery. Apply direct pressure to help stop excess blood loss. Get to your vet, fast. Increase Safety For Dogs For years, Dr. Hiney has trained dogs for agility. She has three Australian Shepherds and one Border Collie. When it comes to working cattle, Dr. Hiney says, “Just because they're a herding dog doesn't mean they are naturally good around livestock. It means they have intense interest in livestock, and that interest has to be channeled through training.” While any dog can learn to be good around livestock, it is important to realize that cattle dogs, for instance the Blue Heeler, Catahoula and Corgi, will be attracted to it and stimulated by the livestock's movement. “A lot of people think dogs can help while working cattle, but only a trained dog is helpful. An untrained dog creates more chaos and anxiety from both livestock and people. If your dog is not trained, he needs to be secured. Tie or pen them up safely out of the way, with water.” Training Tips From Dr. Hiney For cattle dogs, talk to dog trainers who do herding and cattle dog training. Professional cattle dog training offers a safe space for your dog's learning, by working with livestock that are “dog broke,” meaning they know how to move from a dog's pressure. They also can start them on sheep and goats, for a safer option. While a cow dog is bred instinctually to herd, they will benefit both mentally and physically from professional lessons and training to channel their instinctual habits into more strategized skills. For barn dogs, seek out training options. Check your surrounding area for professional dog training classes. Keep in mind, wellmannered dogs are often welcome at horse shows and barns; however, a misbehaving dog nipping or barking is a quick way to be shown the door. In today's world, there are even online dog training options available, and the World Wide Web is filled with helpful training videos as an option, too. Teach dogs the basics. valleyvet.com know commands for recall, down and stay. Teach them the boundaries of what they can and cannot do. They will look to you for the correct answers. Do not let “funny” and “cute” behaviors fly. Allow no recreational cattle or horse chasing, barking, or nipping at all, if you can avoid it. This 'playtime' can easily turn problematic. Use positive training methods that reward good behavior. Use treats, toys, and your undivided attention to make training the most rewarding and fun part of their day. This will keep them happy and engaged with you to make the best choices. During training, keep them on a long line before rewarding them with off-leash. For their safety's sake, not returning to you cannot be an option. Using long lines (essentially a long leash) can prevent bad habits from forming. This is a best practice before letting your dogs off-leash.
