INDUSTRY PARTNER AWARD Purina Animal Nutrition Named Industry Partner of the Year by Colorado State University; Achievements in student development recognized by Department of Animal Sciences faculty Purina Animal Nutrition announced it has received the Industry Partnership Award from Colorado State University's Department of Animal Sciences. Given annually at the department's Spring Branding Banquet, the award recognizes companies that support the university's faculty and students as they pursue their mission to develop leaders in the horse and livestock industries. Purina was recognized on April 12, 2013, for its sponsorship of the Legends of Ranching program, which helps students understand the entire process of training and selling horses. “ Pu r i n a h a s p l a y e d a n important part in the development of the Legends of Ranching program at Colorado State University,” said Dr. Jerry Black, DVM, Wagonhound Land and Livestock Chair in Equine Sciences. “We are grateful for their support of our Equine Sciences Program, the leadership role they play in the equine industry and the shared goal to develop future leaders of the equine world.” The Legends of Ranching program gives students an opportunity to train young horses and put them through sale at the university. As a sixyear consignor, Purina has given two dozen students the chance to learn about training and selling horses by breeding and raising horses for the program at its Purina Animal Nutrition Center. “ We ' r e h o n o r e d t o b e recognized by a forward-looking

animal science program like that at Colorado State University,” said Mike Jerina, Equine Department Manager, Purina Animal Nutrition. “Facilitating the development of future stewards of the horse and agricultural communities is very important and a responsibility Purina takes seriously. These partnerships not only benefit academia, but our industry as well.” The Industry Partnership awardee is selected each year by the faculty of the Department of Animal Sciences. Part of the department's mission is to focus on developing industry leaders and improving profitable production of horses and food animals through the application of science and technology, resource management, and food product enhancement. It addresses societal issues concerning food safety, product quality and value, animal care and management, and environmental impacts of animal agriculture. About Purina Animal Nutrition Purina Animal Nutrition LLC is a national organization serving producers, animal owners and their families through more than 4,700 local cooperatives, independent dealers and other large retailers throughout the United States. SORING LEGISLATION NEWS AAEP, AVMA Urge Passage of Legislation to End Abusive Soring of Horses ( L e x i n g t o n , Ky. ) - T h e American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Association of Equine Practitioners joined together today in support of the Prevent All Soring Tactics Act (PAST), H.R. 1518. The bill seeks to eliminate the abusive act of soring horses by improving the U.S. Department of Agriculture's enforcement capabilities and strengthening penalties against violators, among other provisions. Soring is the intentional infliction of pain in Tennessee Walking Horses, Spotted Saddle Horses, and Racking Horses to produce a high- stepping, unnatural gait. Despite being illegal for more than 40 years, insufficiencies in funding and other resources needed for enforcement at the federal level have contributed to a culture of corruption where this abusive, unethical practice remains prevalent in shows and auctions in certain pockets of the country. “Soring of horses is an inhumane practice that veterinarians are, unfortunately, still seeing. It has crippling physical and mental effects on horses,” said Dr. Douglas Aspros, veterinarian and AVMA president. “It's sad when winning a show takes precedence over the health and welfare of the horse. As veterinarians, we simply can't stand by and allow horses to be a b u s e d . We e n c o u r a g e Congress to quickly pass H.R. 1518 and put an end to the inhumane and unethical practice of soring, once and for all.” (22)

Specifically, H.R. 1518: Makes the actual act of soring, or directing another person to cause a horse to become sore, illegal, whereas the original act only banned showing, transporting, or auctioning a horse that was sore, not the actual practice; Prohibits the use of action devices (e.g., boot, collar, chain, roller, or other device that encircles or is placed upon the lower extremity of the leg of a horse) on any limb of Tennessee Walking Horses, Spotted Saddle Horses, or Racking Horses at horse shows, exhibitions, sales or auctions and bans weighted shoes, pads, wedges, hoof bands, or other devices that are not used for protective or therapeutic purposes; Increases civil and criminal penalties for violations, and creates a penalty structure that requires horses to be disqualified for increasing periods of time based on the number of violations; Allows for permanent disqualification from the show ring after three or more violations; and Requires the USDA (rather than the current structure of horse industry self-regulation) to license, train, assign and oversee inspectors to enforce the Horse Protection Act. "Soring is one of the most significant equine welfare issues in the United States," said AAEP President Dr. Ann Dwyer. "Federal legislation is the only action that will end this decadeslong abuse of horses, and we urge all within the veterinary and horse-owning communities to join us in supporting this bill's passage.” For more information on the AVMA and AAEP's efforts to end soring, please visit the AVMA's Soring Resource Page at www.avma.org/soring. BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS Spring is well underway and so is the riding season at Brighton. Green grass and green leaves on the trees have made our riding all the more pleasurable, and good numbers of riders are hitting our trails on a daily basis. How do we know? We check the sign-in sheets located in our staging area. Actually, it's a sign-in station which was constructed several years ago by BTRA volunteers, and has sheets located under a plastic cover to protect them from the elements. All visitors (both BTRA members and the riding public) are asked to sign in every time they come to ride and also offer comments on their experience on the trails. Not only do we receive compliments (“the signage is very helpful”) but also reports on problems (“tree across trail”). As we have mentioned in the past, the data collected not only let us know how many riders are coming to Brighton, but we can also share that information with the DNR. The pleasant weather also allowed us to hold our most recent Board of Directors meeting under our pavilion in the staging area. We took care of BTRA business, were joined by some other BTRA members who had just come off the trails, enjoyed some snacks, and were able to inspect a newlyconstructed set of mounting steps which had just been added to the staging area, compliments of our local DNR. During the off-season months, we typically hold our meetings at the nearby Brighton Recreation Stable. This facility is owned by the State but operated by private

individuals. We work closely with the management at the Stable and let people know that it's a boarding facility and horse rental operation. They also cater to youth groups. If you know some kids (or adults) who don't own horses but want to give trail riding a try, send them to the Stable. Visit their website at brightonrecridingstable.com. We've already held some organized rides at Brighton and made sure the trails were in good shape for a competitive trail ride that was held in late April. Now we're getting ready for some major events. Last month we mentioned the Pinckney to Brighton Ride and in June we're planning a judged trail ride. We're all looking forward to a riding season that will offer good weather and good times and as usual, we welcome all trail riders to visit, whether it is for a day ride or overnight camping. - Mark Delaney, BTRA Secretary

FORT CUSTER HORSE FRIENDS ASSOCIATION Hello Trail Riders! We held our Spring Equestrian Campout over Mother's Day weekend in May. This was a success with 19 rigs camping and the gathering of old and new friends. Though it was cold, the trails were beautiful, in bloom with spring flowers and the redbud trees in blossom along the Kalamazoo River. We had a potluck on Saturday for supper and no one went away hungry! If you didn't get a chance to join us, please mark your calendar for our Fall Equestrian Campout on September 20-22 later this season. We are working with the DNR to put picket poles in this Whitford Lake event area, hopefully for the next campout. There is a row of pines that have been trimmed up for picket use, but there is still a need for many more poles around the perimeter of this area. For those of you who have not camped with us before, we do supply water for the horses at the site and a trailer for manure disposal. Plus, did I mention all the fun, Fun, FUN we enjoy?! Our board meeting on May 1st included may topics of discussion relating to the campout and preparation of the event area. It was announced that FCHFA was approved for the Match-Fund Grant that we submitted for our pavilion in the trailhead staging area. This grant is a new grant program that

EQUINE LADIES Our April 15 meeting was held at Cindy Nimtz's beautiful facility, Circle C Ranch, in Benton Harbor. Jeff Spitzer, blacksmith and trainer, was our guest speaker. He brought a 16 year old Quarter Horse reining horse stallion, rode, talked and answered many training questions. Our May meeting was once again held at the home of Wilma Schnarnowski in Buchanan. We had our campfire cookout and potluck. Much fun was had by all! Our June meeting will be held at Concord Ridge Stables, in St. Joseph, Dr. Biggers will be talking about Laser therapy. Friends of the Parks groups that are 501(c)3 can apply for funds that meet the grant criteria. There were only 10 groups statewide that applied for matching funds this year. All 10 groups, Fort Custer Horse Friends included, received their grant requests. We are so fortunate to have the DNR in this state to recognize the potential of working with groups such as ours to build and improve our Parks. This will be pursued when the DNR completes our parking lot, hopefully this summer. The DNR is waiting for bids on the project to move forward. The Park is also pricing for 2-3 metal framed kiosks with locking glass covers for our trailhead to be used for maps and information stations. The Park was also contacted about hosting a CMO weekend as a fundraiser for FCHFA. This is to be scheduled in October with more info to follow. This will be another opportunity to camp at the park and try a CMO if you are interested. Trail news: We will be constructing a safe water crossing and trail separation between G3 and G4 for equestrian use only. Also, the trail loop between R4 and R3 was flooded this spring. Plans to make a raised trail through a portion of this loop will be on the workbee agenda in the near future. For the time being, it has been closed until the river recedes. June calendar: June 1st, Saturday, 9:30am Trail workday; June 5th, Galesburg Library, Board meeting, 4:30pm; June 8th, Saturday, 9:30am, Ride and Potluck, meet at the trailhead. KENSINGTON TRAIL RIDERS KTRA hosted another successful campout and potluck/pig roast dinner at the staging area of Kensington Metro Park in May. We are grateful to all those who helped out with registration, setting up and cleaning up for dinner and breakfast, and to all the folks who came out and supported our campout. We are now gearing up for other events this coming summer and fall. Stay tuned for more information through our info-share newsletter, our website, and through our Facebook page. If you have not yet 'liked' us on Facebook, please come visit our page! When you ride the trails at Kensington this summer and find a downed tree, a hornet's nest, or something else that makes your ride difficult, you can report the problem on our web page (www.kensingtontrailriders.org) There is an easily found link that alerts us to the problem. And while you're on our web page, don't forget to check out the photo gallery. We have pictures posted from the 2013 Member Appreciation Day and the 2013 Annual Square Dance and Banquet. We will have pictures from the campout posted soon. With the onslaught of hot weather – it will be summer in Michigan sometime this year – remember to check for heat stroke in your horses. Heat stroke can happen to horses whether they are working hard, standing in stuffy stables, or traveling in trailers. Know your horse's normal TPRs. Call a vet and take immediate action if your horse exhibits any of these symptoms: • Elevated respiration in an inactive horse (normal range is 4

to 16 breaths per minute). • Elevated pulse in an inactive horse, pulse that does not drop after several minutes, or climbs once exercise has stopped. • Profuse sweating or no sweating at all. • Elevated body temperature above 103F. • Irregular heart beat known as 'thumps.' • A depressed attitude. • Dehydration. Test for this by observing your horse's flanks. If they look caved in, he is probably dehydrated. Pick up a pinch of skin along your horse's neck. If the skin snaps back quickly, the horse is sufficiently hydrated. If the pinched area collapses slowly, the horse is dehydrated. Happy Trails!

Hard working, enthusiastic, motived individuals who are interested in promoting MApHA and its endeavors should inquire! MICHIGAN COMPETITIVE MOUNTED ORIENTEERING What lovely weather for the beginning of the trail riding season. The first ride of the year ordered up 70 degree weather with lots of sunshine and cool evenings. The trails were beautiful with the new growth of spring. A great big thank you goes out to Greg and Linda Weirauch for putting on a great ride and being wonderful advocates for children with cancer. The proceeds from this ride went to their organization Horses for Hope. It was great to see some new faces at the first ride and I hope that they will return for upcoming rides. Greg and Linda made everyone feel welcome and showed the beginners how to treasure hunt in the woods. Girlz in Gear won the Saturday and Sunday ten plate ride followed by Randal and Melissa Fox on Saturday and Royla Wesphal on Sunday. On Saturday John and Abbie Debiak completed the short course in just over an hour and a half followed by Tonica and Jessica Bates riding with Cindy Cowell. The short course was taken by Linda Paushan & Cindy Hotz and a close 2nd place to John & Abbie Debiak on Sunday. There are three rides in June so that will be a busy month for MiCMO. Be sure to check out our schedule at micmo.org or visit our Facebook page for updated information. On June 1st and 2nd we will be at Silver Creek County Park. The following weekend we will be east of Grand Rapids at Ionia Recreation Area. After two weekends off we will be riding on June 29th and 30th up north at DbarD in Chase. If you would like to ride along WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

They will also take some time and show you how to CMO right in the campground before you head out. If you are true beginner and would like some extra special instruction, Barb Drake is putting on a beginners clinic on July 27th at Sleepy Hollow Recreation Area. My team and I hope to be at most of the rides this summer so please stop by and say hello. Be very quiet though, we are prone to naps in the afternoon to rest up for the potluck! See you on the trails! Janet

PROUD LAKE TRAIL RIDERS Great riding weather is finally here! We’re hoping everyone is getting out on their horses and having fun with whatever you and your horse do together. Our Poker Ride was a huge success. Thank you to everyone who came out and rode and also to Mother Nature for giving us the perfect day. Come join us on June 22nd for our annual Mobile Confidence Course presented by Kim Ventress. If you have never participated in one of her confidence course events you should definitely give it a try. This is a great activity for both you and your horse. There will be a practice run in the morning starting at 9 A.M. and the real event will start around 1 P.M.. There will be prizes for the horse and rider that complete the course with the most points. Pot luck lunch will be served. For those of you that like to camp, please join us on Friday, June 21st and Saturday, June 22nd . Please check our website for more information on this event.

www.ProudLakeTrailRiders.org The rest of our events are as follows. July 19-21 will be a campout and ride event, Aug 2325 will be a campout and ride event and October 26th will be our annual Halloween Spooktacular event. Hope to see you all there! Please keep in mind that being that we ride in a state park, we are responsible for the trail maintenance. We have spent many hours out on the trails trimming and are always looking for an extra hand. Our worker bee days are always a lot of fun and we usually try to get in a ride and a campfire as well. We will announce organized dates throughout the spring and summer and will also send out emails on any impromptu work days we have as well. Happy Trails and remember... from his poll back to his withers. Your hands work together in two basic reining cues: open (direct) rein and neck (indirect) rein. Both of these rein effects can provide steering and total control of the forehand, but the key is learning to guide the horse with lightness. The open rein moves sideways to direct the horse which way to move. If you want to turn right, for example, your right hand actually moves out sideways. In the beginning, you may need to move the rein hand six to ten inches sideways. Once the horse learns what you are asking, you will only need to move your hand a couple of inches. The horse should give to the direct rein pressure and move his head in the direction you are guiding him. Your opposite hand (indirect rein) also moves sideways at the same time so that it touches the horse's neck. The horse will move away from that rein pressure and into the direction that your open rein is guiding him. When you are steering, or guiding, the horse, your hands should stay level at about the height of the saddle horn if you are riding Western, or, in general, about six inches above the withers. When you want to decrease speed or stop, apply the seat and leg cues described in the last newsletter and reinforce the request with the reins by applying a slight pressure in a somewhat upward motion of not more than 12 inches above the withers. If you practice these rein aids, you will be able to steer with lightness. Again, use as little pressure as necessary when slowing down or stopping. Do not jerk or pull on the reins! If you use slight rein pressure as

• PALM PARTNERSHIP TRAINING™ • Building a Partnership with Your Horse

ON-TRAIL TRAINING, Part VI By Lynn Palm www.LynnPalm.com • 1-800-503-2824 This month, we continue the discussion on how to give your horse “clear cues” when asking something of him—this time with your legs and your hands. Using Your Leg Aids Your legs control the twothirds of the horse's body that extends from the withers to his hindquarters. Your right leg aid controls the horse's right side of his barrel, back, hip, and right hind leg. Your left leg aid controls the horse's left side of his barrel, back, hip, and left hind leg. Your leg aids support the cues you give to your horse with your seat. Your horse first has to learn how to move away from pressure in order for your leg cues to be effective. This is a natural lesson for him to learn because the horse is a flight animal. I like to start the horse's lessons on moving away from pressure on the ground. I use my hand and put pressure on the horse's side in the exact place where a rider's leg would contact the horse, about two inches behind the girth. I hold the lead rope in my other hand so that the horse's head is very slightly turned towards me. I also start this lesson next to a fence to help keep his body straight. You want the horse to yield to the pressure on his side, which is actually a turn on the forehand, but not to spin in a circle. Once the horse understands what you are asking of him on the ground, practice the same lesson under saddle by asking him to move, or yield, left from your leg pressure on his right side. Then, have him move right from your leg pressure on his left side. When you are cueing the horse to yield right by applying

pressure with your left leg, your right leg becomes the “supporting” leg. The supporting leg helps to keep the horse's body straight instead of bending. It also acts like a gas pedal and encourages the horse to keep moving forward and to maintain even speed while moving laterally with the hind legs. To ask the horse to move forward or to increase speed, use both legs with even pressure just behind the girth. If the horse does not respond promptly, move your legs back slightly and press again. This gets better results than just squeezing or kicking him in the same spot. To slow down or decrease speed, use your seat cue with your legs supporting that cue by just touching the horse's sides. Because your legs control the horse's hind end, you want to support him in this way to keep him balanced as he slows down. If you keep him balanced, he will not get heavy on the forehand. Focus on supporting the horse with your legs without using abrupt or vigorous movements as you practice increasing and decreasing speed within a gait and when changing gaits. The least amount of aid it takes to get the desired results is always desirable. Using Your Hand Aids Many riders use their hands and legs as aids the most and their seat the least, and this is the exact opposite of the way it should be done. When using the hands, many riders have a tendency to grasp the reins and pull back towards their body. The best way to control the horse, however, is with a light sideways reins motion. Your hands control the front one-third of the horse's body

support to your seat and leg aids, you will get more willing results from your horse. An Exercise to Practice Your Hand Aids Lay out a circle about 70 feet in diameter using eight cones as follows: Stand in the center and take about 10 large strides out towards the edge of the circle and place one cone there and then take two more outward strides and place another cone directly across from the first so that they are about six feet apart. Return to the center of the circle and repeat until each quarter of the circle is marked with two cones. Ride in a circle and go between the two cones at each quarter and try to stay the same distance from each cone. You will find you have to use both your inside and outside leg to support the horse, and the cones make it obvious which leg needs to be more active. This also helps you coordinate your rein aids as you use an open (direct) rein to guide the horse in the direction you want to go and neck (indirect) rein to help turn him in that direction. Start this exercise at the walk, and move into a slow trot, then on to a lengthening trot, and finally up to a canter as you master the exercise. Change directions frequently by making an “S” through the middle of the circle. As with any exercise on a circle, do not do this exercise for too long and mix some straight work in with it. Tension in the reins gives the horse something to resist so don't give him something to fight against. Lightness is a gift to your horse, and both of you will benefit when your horse becomes a more relaxed and willing partner.

The material is taken from a series of articles I did for Trail Rider Magazine with writer Cynthia McFarland. Many trail-training lessons can be found in my book, Training Outside the Box. Find this, and other helpful training materials, at www.lynnpalm.com or call 800-503-2824. (36)

yielding, circles, serpentines, simple up and down transitions. I want the horse to relax his back, lengthen into my hand, and accept the aids without expending a lot of energy. On a geriatric horse, I might do this phase entirely at the walk with the aim of suppling his muscles and joints without stressing them before his class. On other horses, I will walk, trot, and canter according to the horse's energy drive and stiffness. In Phase Two, I ask the horse to move forward into my hand more while rounding his back and engaging the hindend. I use lateral work, shoulder-fore, smaller circles, and various transitions to collect and rebalance the horse as his needs that day may require. I do not school anything new with the horse. I am just refreshing the horse's muscle memory of the shape my aids are asking him to take with his body. In Phase Three, I want to check the horse's response to my aids for movements in our test. For example, on a horse preparing for a first level dressage test, I might check his canter departs, down transitions, and make sure he moves forward from my leg. On a horse starting third level tests, I might ask him to collect and extend, ask him for a few steps at half pass, and ask for a flying change. On a horse already doing grand prix tests, I might ask for a few strides of piaffe or passage and some tempi changes to check his response to my aids on that day. If a movement is a new to you as the rider, you might want to check your coordination of the aids. This last minute check is just that—a check. This is not the time to school or drill or to ride the whole test. Save your horse's energy for the class ahead. You may do very little at all in Phase Three depending on your horse. If you are riding a schoolmaster, an older horse with physical issues, a lazy horse with low energy drive or a horse that just warms up better with collecting and extending exercises, you may not do any

SHOW DAY WARM-UP ROUTINES By Nancy Wesolek-Sterrett, Dressage Dept. Head, Meredith Manor International Equestrian Centre Professional trainers and riders understand that the warm up routine they choose for each individual horse can be the deciding factor in whether they win or lose their class. Some novice riders, on the other hand, misunderstand the importance of this pre-competition step. They may think about how they will ride their warm up until they put their foot in the stirrup. They may just wander around on a loose rein (which at least warms their horse's muscles) without checking to see if they have the horse's attention or can establish a connection with their aids. They may start drilling the horse on something he has not completely mastered in the hope he will perform the maneuver better that day. It is not uncommon to see a rider longing a nervous or high energy horse in order to tire him out. With a little planning, riders can avoid wasting this crucial prep time. Developing and planning a warm up routine appropriate for your particular horse starts at home. We discussed the variables to consider in your athome training and planning to maximize the value of your show warm up in a previous article (see www.meredithmanor.edu for article archives). Now it is show time. For a typical weekend show, you need to plan several different warm up routines. I show in dressage competitions so I will use them as an example. But the planning principles apply to any discipline. ON ARRIVAL I like to arrive on the show grounds the day before my first classes. Arriving the day before gives both horse and rider time to settle in and get mentally prepared. Your horse may be stiff from the trailer ride. If it was a long haul, he will be tired, possibly a bit hungry and dehy-

drated. Get him settled in his stall and allow him to drink and eat while you set up the stabling area. When he has rested, it is time for his first warm up. You want to save your horse's energy for the competition tomorrow, so, in general, you will just loosen the horse up by walking around the show grounds. Visit every arena, go by the flower boxes, the judge's stands, past trash barrels and anything unusual at the show grounds that the horse does not see at home. Remember that the horse sees things differently out of each eye. Pass everything in both directions so the horse will not be surprised when competition starts tomorrow. Your goal is a relaxed horse with a relaxed back, head lowered and neck lengthened while moving from your leg into a following hand. If you have an anxious or excitable horse who will only jig if you warm him up under saddle, plan to show him around from the ground. Know before you go which way is probably best for your horse. But whether you “heed” him in hand or ride him, keep your horse's attention on you and keep him on your aids. SECOND DAY, FIRST CLASS I think of my class warm ups in four phases: •Relaxing the horse; warming, loosening and suppling his muscles. •Engaging the hindquarters. •Refreshing the horse's response to the aids for movements he will do in the test. •Finishing with a few final exercises that relax and supple the horse. If you know your horse and how long it takes him to move through these four phases, you can time your warm up so that you are finishing up just before your class is called. In Phase One, I use basic schooling movements: leg

movements in the warm up. Phase Four is a quiet return to moving on the aids with rhythm and relaxation while we wait for the call to enter the ring. If I have done my warm up well, my horse will be on my aids, ready to transition right back into working mode, so we can make an energetic entrance that says, “Look at us, Judge.” SECOND DAY, LATER CLASSES In general, warm ups for subsequent classes take less time. If you are doing 2 or even 3 tests in a day, warms ups for later classes may be just enough to warm up muscles and get the horse on the aids. Altering your warm up to save the horse's energy is key to a winning strategy. Take weather and other stressors into consideration as you ride in additional classes. It may be 60 degrees for your morning class and 90 degrees by the time you show in the afternoon. Rain may have changed the footing, making things more difficult for the horses. Tired horses are more injury prone. THIRD DAY By this time your horse should be well settled and need far less mental preparation than he needed the day you arrived. Previous warm ups and classes will have spent a good deal of his energy. This is definitely the day you do not want to lose your class by using up too much energy in the warm up ring. Evaluate the warm up plan you prepared before the show and make changes appropriate for your horse's needs before this final effort. Figuring out the best warm up plan for an individual horse is an art, not a science. Until you get to know a particular horse and discover what routines work best for him, you may blow a few tests. Chalk them up to experience until you understand your horse's best program. At the end of the day, remember that showing is about having fun with your horse. WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Western Dressage Clinic – June 22, 2013 This is an informational clinic for auditors only. Limited spots available, $35 per person. Must pre-register by June 15. No walk-ins. Call 248.969.2651

Held at Ironwood Farm, 3275 Hagerman Road, Leonard, MI 48367 Definition of Western Dressage – Western Dressage is a new equine discipline that extends the benefits of classical dressage to every horse, regardless of breed. Dressage skills can expand the capabilities of a Western horse by improving a horse’s strength, cadence, and rhythm. It offers an enhanced riding experience. At the same time, it celebrates the Western traditions of a light, respectful, and compassionate partnership with the horse. Judging Standards – “…the score isn’t about whether horse “A” is a better mover than horse “B”, but has the proper training been accomplished. The key to what is being asked is that the way the horse uses itself is that which best preserves its legs and suspensory system. So, if the good of the horse is the standard, there is no difference between English and Western. For the Dressage trainer bio-mechanically there’s a way for each horse to move that is optimal for that level of training and it doesn’t matter what tack is on it, the horse is still a horse.” Barbara Long – NC Affiliate
