A message from Alistair Spalding
At the heart of Sadler’s Wells is a spirit of creative innovation and artistic collaboration. People of all ages and backgrounds come to see and take part in dance here as we offer a place where art, design, music and theatre all come together. Our Spring 2016 season reflects this ongoing commitment to fostering novel ideas and opportunities, with a major new production reimagining our home and a variety of brilliant shows, many created by our associate artists and companies. We invited lighting designer Michael Hulls, composer, producer and musician Nitin Sawhney and set designer Lucy Carter to take over the building. The series of installations they developed, No Body, turns the spotlight on the various elements that contribute to a successful dance production, with one exception: no performers are physically present. Immersed in surprising sensory environments shaped by lighting, sound and digital technology, audiences have a chance to experience Sadler’s Wells in a completely new way and enter spaces they have never seen before. Now in its fourth year, a 42-strong National Youth Dance Company debuts In – Nocentes, an original piece by its Guest Artistic Director for 2015-16, Michael Keegan-Dolan. Our Associate Company English National Ballet premieres She Said, a triple bill featuring choreography by female dance makers Aszure Barton, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and Yabin Wang. BalletBoyz return to our stage with a new programme, including two commissions by choreographers Pontus Lidberg and Javier de Frutos. Co-produced by Sadler's Wells, Life is performed by the incredible dancers of theTALENT, with an ensemble of nine musicians playing its original score live. We present the UK premiere of Crystal Pite’s latest work Betroffenheit, a deeply moving and extraordinary blend of dance and theatre created with actor and writer Jonathon Young. I look forward to a season of great dance, which I hope will excite and inspire you.
Alistair Spalding CBE Chief Executive and Artistic Director

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan Songs of the Wanderers Wednesday 4 - Saturday 7 May Acclaimed for its unique fusion of ancient and modern traditions and its exquisite choreography inspired by the wealth of spiritual practices found throughout Asia, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan returns to Sadler’s Wells. A visually stunning tribute to pilgrimage, Songs of the Wanderers creates a sense of intense reverence, distinctly Asian in its imagery, yet with powerful relevance far beyond any geographic boundary. Evocative movements set to a soundtrack of soulful Georgian folksongs sung by the Rustavi Choir, find life on a simple but striking set, including three tons of shimmering golden grains of rice falling to the floor.

Cecilia Lisa Eliceche Unison UK PREMIERE Thursday 5 & Friday 6 May Brussels-based Argentine choreographer Cecilia Lisa Eliceche comes to London for the first time with a new creation since her noted choreographic debut in 2011. With Unison she focuses on one of the most compelling concepts in choreography: the simultaneous execution of the same movement by several people.
Performance Times & Prices Thu & Fri at 8pm £17 Free post-show talk: Thu
But what does the idea of unison actually suggest? What are the political and even feminist possibilities of this concept? Eliceche asks whether we can redefine the way we experience being together in society through this formal tool. With an enigmatic yet precise ritual, the piece conjures up dance histories and popular traditions, weaving minimalism with complex relationships, subtlety highlighting our physical experience of togetherness.

Rambert A Linha Curva and other works Tuesday 10 - Saturday 14 May A new work from Australian dance maker Lucy Guerin, Tomorrow, follows on from her collaboration with Carrie Cracknell on Macbeth for the Young Vic, with original music by electronica artist Scanner. Shobana Jeyasingh’s enigmatic Terra Incognita, propelled by Gabriel Prokofiev’s driving score, evokes the yearning for the unknown that inspired ancient sea-farers. The riotous A Linha Curva by Itzik Galili is Rambert’s party piece: a colourful, sexy, percussion-fuelled explosion of samba-flavoured dance that was last seen in 2010, when it helped Rambert win the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance for a year of new work.

Composer and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Nitin Sawhney’s Indelible is a music, sound and animation trail that allows the audience to explore the DNA of the building, whilst Lucy Carter’s intimate installations pop up in unusual spaces in the depths of the Sadler’s Wells building, shining a light on hidden backstage worlds and evoking new environments in existing everyday ones.

Alain Platel, Frank Van Laecke & Steven Prengels En avant, marche! Part of LIFT 2016
Thursday 16 & Friday 17 June Alain Platel, the trailblazing Founder and Director of the Belgian contemporary dance collective les ballets C de la B, presents this new musical theatre work in collaboration with director Frank Van Laecke, with music composed by Steven Prengels.
Performance Times & Prices Thu & Fri at 7.30pm £12 - £27
For this new production, Van Laecke and Platel approach the world of marching bands as a ‘miniature society’ in its own right, a collective of very different individuals who try to keep one another going in the same direction. By creating a metaphor for society as a whole, Platel explores how musical arrangements are preserved through trial and error. Four actors and seven musicians are joined on stage by a local brass or marching band, playing music by Gustav Holst, Giuseppe Verdi and Gustav Mahler.
“With a glorious sense of chaos, this production celebrates the community surrounding a dying trombonist with eloquence and a deep sense of fun” The Guardian

Marie Chouinard Double Bill UK PREMIERE Monday 20 & Tuesday 21 June Marie Chouinard, one of the world’s most daring and original choreographers, presents a double bill of dance. The evening’s first piece is titled Soft virtuosity, still humid, on the edge. This new work explores different tempos, from a frantic pace to extreme slowness, through various forms of perambulation. Captured and projected live, the dancers' faces become the place of slow transformations, acting like kaleidoscopes in constant movement.
Performance Times & Prices Mon & Tue at 7.30pm £12 - £27 Contains nudity
In 1980, Chouinard discovered the book Mouvements by the Belgian surrealist Henri Michaux (1899-1984), containing 64 pages of India-ink drawings. Chouinard decrypted these images and reinterpreted them into a unique choreographic score titled HENRI MICHAUX : MOUVEMENTS, an ingenious meeting of dance and visual arts.

Hofesh Shechter Company barbarians Wednesday 6 - Friday 8 July Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Hofesh Shechter’s caustic and thrilling trilogy returns: three wildly different takes on intimacy, passion and the banality of love.
Performance Times & Prices Wed - Fri at 7.30pm £12 - £29 Age guidance: 14+
Revealing Shechter’s choreography at its most elegant and intimate, the barbarians in love opens the evening. Six white-clad figures move as one to the strains of an ecclesiastic baroque score. This world is soon exploded in tHE bAD, when innocence is lost, and its trance-like dup-step grooves transition into the final piece, a darkly emotional duet.
Contains nudity, explicit lyrics and very loud music
Featuring world-class dancers and a powerful score, this is the ultimate visceral experience, from the creator of the modern classic Political Mother.
