We support the development of dance artists and choreographers at every stage of their career. Our Associate Artists, resident and associate companies include the most exciting talents working in dance today. We also nurture the next generation of artists through research and development, and a range of programmes including the National Youth Dance Company, Wild Card, New Wave Associates, Open Art Surgery and Summer University. Our annual community, schools and creative learning programmes offer access to dance and opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to take part in high-quality productions and learning opportunities, both on and off our stages. We present dance made today across a wide range of styles – from tango to hip hop, flamenco, ballet and cutting-edge contemporary dance – to audiences of over half a million people each year. We commission and produce original work for our stages and tour productions to arts venues around the world, as well as bringing the best of British and international dance to large audiences at our three theatres in London.

A message from Alistair Spalding
This autumn, I am pleased to present Out of Asia 2, our second season offering audiences the opportunity to experience outstanding dance coming from the region. You can enjoy 8, the latest piece by TAO Dance Theatre, as well as a new work by dancer and choreographer Yang Liping, based on Lilian Lee’s novel Farewell My Concubine. Cloud Gate 2 presents a triple bill showcasing the next generation of dance makers from Taiwan, while the National Ballet of China performs in enduring love story The Peony Pavilion. In addition to the performances, our foyer hosts an installation by artist, performance maker and designer Choy Ka Fai, as part of his project SoftMachine. Travelling across five Asian countries to meet contemporary choreographers, Ka Fai has created a nuanced and insightful portrait of the status of dance in the region through a wealth of portraits, interviews and documentary films. Looking at dance made closer to home, some of our Associate Artists bring brand new work to our stage: Jasmin Vardimon reimagines the story of Pinocchio, Akram Khan premieres his version of Giselle, created for our Associate Company English National Ballet, and Michael Keegan-Dolan relocates Swan Lake to an Irish setting. Making her Sadler’s Wells debut in September is dancer and choreographer Sharon Eyal. Her high-voltage, expressive piece, created with collaborator Gai Behar, references club culture through the combination of a live, electronic score and energy-filled choreographic language. Finally, over the Christmas period I am delighted to have our Resident Company New Adventures perform in Matthew Bourne’s glamorous new show The Red Shoes, based on the film by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. I would like to thank you for your continued support – we would not be able to do all this without our patrons. This season is full to the brim with original ideas, conveyed through compelling stories and wonderful movement. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Mixed Bill Tuesday 6 - Saturday 17 September The world-famous and world-class dance company, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, returns to Sadler’s Wells for the first time since 2010 with an exhilarating showcase of dance. Celebrating nearly 60 years of unparalleled artistry, Ailey’s trademark technical brilliance and passionate energy bring audiences everywhere to their feet every night. Programme A includes the UK premiere of the uplifting Exodus, along with Four Corners and Christopher Wheeldon’s haunting After the Rain Pas de Deux. This piece is about love that always misses, or lovers out of sync. Eyal and Behar explore this space, viewing themes of the heart through the lens of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Performed to deep, pulsing, tribal grooves, this is a powerful display from the company’s fiercely talented dancers, inspired by Neil Hilborn’s text “OCD”.

Natalia Osipova is a major star in the dance world. She started formal ballet training at age 8, joining the Bolshoi Ballet at age 18 and dancing many of the art form’s biggest roles. After leaving the Bolshoi in 2011, she joined American Ballet Theatre as a guest dancer and later the Mikhailovsky Ballet. She joined The Royal Ballet as a principal in 2013 after her guest appearance in Swan Lake. The programme, Osipova’s first ever commission, features new contemporary work inspired by this unique dancer from Sadler’s Wells Associate Artists Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Russell Maliphant, alongside Royal Opera House regular Arthur Pita.

What will change, if and when science discovers how our minds arise from our bodies? Choreographer and performer Matthias Sperling furthers his investigation into the relationship between mind and body in a new performance lecture exploring a hypothetical future in which that connection is clarified.

This work of science fiction builds on recent findings, taking a choreographic perspective to freely imagine plausible, absurd, thrilling or worrying scenarios. Formed in 2008 by Beijing-based choreographer Tao Ye, TAO Dance Theatre is known for its mixture of art forms, including film and visual art, creating work that has a mesmeric, trance-like quality.

Birmingham Royal Ballet The Tempest / Shakespeare Triple Bill Monday 10 - Saturday 15 October David Bintley’s new ballet, The Tempest, conjures Prospero’s magical isle from Shakespeare’s late masterpiece into a spellbinding new work of ballet theatre. At once enchanting and elemental, this is a powerful story of a man determined to right past wrongs by all means in his power. Birmingham Royal Ballet’s other programme is a stylish celebration of Shakespeare, presented during the 400th anniversary of the playwright’s death. The Shakespeare Triple Bill begins with José Limón’s The Moor’s Pavane, a thrilling one-act interpretation of the dramatic Othello, followed by The Shakespeare Suite, which sees Bintley set the Bard’s best-loved characters to a swinging Duke Ellington score. The evening ends with Wink, a new piece by Jessica Lang inspired by the poetry of the sonnets.

SoftMachine is a multimedia project investigating the contemporary status of dance across Asia. The first of two double bills in October created by Choy Ka Fai, this evening showcases some of the most interesting new dance and choreography emerging from India and China through live performance and documentary film.

Surjit Nongmeikapam is a contemporary dancer from Manipur, India, trained in classical Indian dance and martial arts. The performance presents the process of creating a new dance production for the consumption of a European audience, revealing artistic strategies, marketing ideologies and exploring the precarious practice of eroticising oneself. XiaoKe and ZiHan from Shanghai make collaborative works exploring the body in its extremes, reflecting on the social and political context of China. The performance investigates the boundaries of artistic freedom and speculates on the experience of constant cultural surveillance. The China National Peking Opera Company The General and the Prime Minister / White Snake Part of Out of Asia 2 Thursday 13 - Saturday 15 October One of China’s most respected and innovative cultural exports, The China National Peking Opera Company has staged more than 500 masterful historical dramas since its formation five decades ago. Based on historical accounts of the Warring States period of ancient China, The General and the Prime Minister is filled with thrilling drama and entertainment. Set against an emotive backdrop of trickery, power struggles and personal determination, its influence continues to be felt in China today. The Legend of White Snake is a famous piece of Chinese folklore, while its characters are household names in the country. In the long history of suppression and obedience before her, Lady White, one of the story’s key figures, is a symbol of rebellion, bravery and a quest for true love. Dance & Dialogue is a dual presentation of movement and words, illuminating distinctive artistic practice.

Dance: A trio between classical dancer Suzie Birchwood, an aerial artist and a contemporary dancer. The piece explores Suzie’s tempestuous relationship with her condition, generalised dystonia. The second work plays with notions of support and balance, exploring Suzie’s changing physicality during the cyclical patterns of her condition. Dialogue: Suzie Birchwood brings together collaborators from her research process, specifically looking at how her neuroplasticity specialist has been working to revolutionise Suzie’s dystonia treatment. By revealing her shifting physicality, Birchwood aims to show that the disorder is a unique and changing aspect of her identity as a dancer.

Yuya Tsukahara is the leader of contact Gonzo, a contemporary dance unit based in Osaka. contact Gonzo creates encounters that teeter on the edge of violence and tenderness. This performance, bringing together live and film elements, is an attempt to decode the logics of this practice and to explore how someone becomes part of contact Gonzo. Rianto is a dancer from Banyumas, Indonesia, who specialises in the traditional cross-gender erotic dance of Lengger. The performance explores the tension between traditional and contemporary choreographic practices during the global shift from rural to urban lifestyles. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Candoco Dance Company presents a double bill, following its acclaimed restaging of Jérôme Bel’s The Show Must Go On last year.

Alexander Whitley, a classically trained dancer and Sadler’s Wells New Wave Associate, has become known for his strikingly physical and virtuosic choreography. In Beheld, seven dancers explore the possibilities and constraints of the space to consider how we look and what we see.

Sawhney, an extraordinary, distinctive and versatile musical voice, is joined by Joss Stone and a host of other special guests, including genre-smashing duo Honji Wang and Sébastien Ramirez performing new, specially-commissioned choreography.

Contemporaries is three specially commissioned pieces from a new generation of dance-makers. They explore themes including work, migration, identity, society and art. Joseph Haydn’s The Creation is his masterpiece. Its lyrical arias and monumental choruses show off one of the greatest classical composers at the peak of his powers. Rambert’s new staging marries dance to this wonderful music, with Pablo Bronstein’s designs reflecting the wit and majesty of Haydn’s score. Mark Baldwin choreographs a cast of over 50 dancers, joined on stage by 70 singers and musicians for a performance on a truly grand scale.

National Ballet of China The Peony Pavillion Part of Out of Asia 2 Tuesday 29 November – Saturday 3 December The 16th century epic, The Peony Pavilion, is one of the most enduring love stories in Chinese literature. Originally performed as a Kunqu Opera in a 20-hour cycle, director and production designer Li Liuyi, as well as choreographer Fei Bo have redrawn it into a sublimely enchanting and pioneering two act fusion ballet that combines Western style choreography with traditional Chinese influences. Premiering in 2008, the work has become a gem in National Ballet of China’s repertoire, and has received outstanding acclaim internationally. With an eclectic post-modern score that references Holst, Prokofiev and Debussy, and ethereal costuming, it is a sumptuous feast for the eyes, ears and emotions.
