A message from Alistair Spalding
Our Spring / Summer 2015 season marks a landmark moment in the recent history of Sadler’s Wells. Ten years ago, we embarked on a new venture to produce as well as present the best dance from around the world and PUSH, the acclaimed show with Sylvie Guillem and Russell Maliphant, was one of our first productions. Sylvie has decided to stop dancing at the end of 2015 and so we will bid an emotional farewell to her as she performs in London for the last time. Her new programme is the final chance to see her dance on our stage and the opportunity to celebrate her outstanding talent and unique contribution to the art form. We also mark the beginning of an exciting collaboration with English National Ballet, which is now an Associate Company of Sadler’s Wells. The company will perform two seasons each year at Sadler’s Wells, beginning this March with Modern Masters, featuring work by Jiří Kylián, John Neumeier and William Forsythe. Work by our Associate Artists is always an important part of our programme. This season, we are delighted to present a new triple bill by Hofesh Shechter, Crystal Pite and Kate Prince and to welcome the return of Wayne McGregor’s Atomos, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s m¡longa and TOROBAKA by Akram Khan and Israel Galván and Matthew Bourne’s The Car Man. Among the world-class international productions coming to our stages are works by Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch and Boris Charmatz. Beyond our walls, a major event this spring is the country’s general election. As the decisions that politicians make affect the cultural offer available to us, I encourage you to cast your vote on 7 May to make sure your voice is heard.

“A jewel of optical theatre, at the crossroads of magic, dance, puppetry and cinema” Le Monde
Compagnie 111 / Aurélien Bory / Kaori Ito Plexus UK PREMIERE Thursday 22 & Friday 23 January Conceived by Aurélien Bory for the extraordinary Japanese dancer Kaori Ito, Plexus is a “jewel of optical theatre” (Le Monde) presented by Sadler’s Wells and London International Mime Festival. Entrapped by five thousand cords, a forest of brilliantly lit strings, a warrior-woman conquers her environment so that she floats, like a black angel, in a sumptuous cage that she can only leave by vanishing completely.
Performance Times & Prices Thu & Fri at 7.30pm £12 - £28 Free post-show talk: Thu Contains nudity
Following his Olivier Award nominated What’s Become of You? for flamenco dancer Stéphanie Fuster, Plexus is director Aurélien Bory’s latest portrait of a remarkable dancer. Kaori Ito trained in classical ballet in Japan and America, then came to Europe where she performed and choreographed with Philippe Decouflé , Angelin Preljocaj, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, James Thierrée, and Alain Platel’s les ballets C de la B. Aurélien Bory and Kaori Ito are two of Europe’s most exciting dance innovators; with lighting design by Arno Veyrat, sound by Stéphane Ley and costumes by Sylvie Marcucci, Plexus is a revelation.

Richard Alston Dance Company Rejoice in the Lamb, Burning, Nomadic, Madcap Monday 26 & Tuesday 27 January Richard Alston Dance Company launches its 20th anniversary celebrations with a programme unique to Sadler’s Wells. New to London is Alston’s Rejoice in the Lamb, Britten’s joyous setting of the brilliant and fervent words of poet Christopher Smart.
Performance Times & Prices Mon & Tue at 7.30pm £12 - £38
New also is Martin Lawrance’s latest piece, Burning, as passionate and turbulent as its music, the Dante Sonata of Franz Liszt. In Sadler’s Wells commission, Nomadic, Alston revisits the musical genre of his hugely popular Gypsy Mixture - this time though, the music is darker and sharper, from Ursari Gypsy band Shukar Collective. To explore the interaction between gypsy music and urban sound, Alston is collaborating with the young dancer and choreographer Ajani Johnson-Goffe. Finally the iconic band Icebreaker play Julia Wolfe’s percussive score for Lawrance’s dynamic and exhilarating Madcap.

Jonathan Burrows & Matteo Fargion One Flute Note & Body Not Fit For Purpose Monday 2 & Tuesday 3 February Choreographer Jonathan Burrows and composer Matteo Fargion have been invited around the world with their unique brand of humour and intellectual rigour, radiating delight even as they make the audience think.
Performance Times & Prices Mon & Tue at 8pm £17
Collaborators for 25 years, the two artists clash the formality of classical music composition with an open and often anarchic approach to performance, bringing them an international following. In this one hour performance they present two recent pieces. One Flute Note is a meditation on memory and music, which generates accumulating worlds of sound and action out of a single event. Body Not Fit For Purpose is their first overtly political work, commissioned by the 2014 Venice Biennale and taking as its starting point the uselessness of dancing to express anything of any real concern and at the same time the inherent, gloriously foolish radicality of the attempt.
“There's a beguiling mix of the scholarly, the quizzical and the righteously indignant that is unique to Fargion and Burrows” The Guardian on Body Not Fit For Purpose Photo: Ben Parks

The Associates Crystal Pite / Kate Prince / Hofesh Shechter UK PREMIERE Thursday 5 - Sunday 8 February Sadler’s Wells Associate Artists represent some of the most dynamic and exciting talent working in contemporary dance today. For this very special programme, three of the Associates present new and critically acclaimed work.
Performance Times & Prices Thu - Sat at 7.30pm Sun at 4pm £12 - £29 Sadler’s Wells Patrons’ Event: Thu
Sadler’s Wells’ newest Associate Artist, Crystal Pite, will present A Picture of You Falling – a duet for a man and a woman. It centres on Pite’s fascination with the shared narratives that live in our bodies – the familiar repetitive storylines that move across cultures and generations, and the body’s role as illustrator. Inspired by the complex beauty of baroque music Associate Artist, Hofesh Shechter, presents new work, the barbarians in love, a sparse world in which six dancers move with mathematical precision and passion. The stage is stripped back to reveal Shechter’s choreography at its most elegant and intimate as the work trembles with emotion residing within the order. Completing the bill is a brand new work, SMILE, choreographed and performed by Tommy Franzén, and directed by Associate Artist Kate Prince (ZooNation). Inspired by the song Smile, originally composed by Charlie Chaplin, the piece looks behind the smiling face of one of the world's greatest entertainers.

Sally Marie & John Ross Questions and Dancers Saturday 7 February Questions and Dancers is a double bill of new works for young people, bringing together new dance talent: Sally Marie, nominated for the Critics’ Circle National Dance Award for new talent and John Ross, winner of the New Adventures Choreographer Award. Sally and John each create an original short dance piece with final year students from London Contemporary Dance School (LCDS), inviting inquisitive young minds to share their feedback and questions after the show.
Performance Times & Prices 2.30pm & 7pm £7 Age Guidance 8+ Free post-show discussion after both performances
Sally Marie presents I am 8, a world in which children’s personal stories and dancers’ lives blend in a tale of discovery, spanning what it is like to be 8 years old to being 21. What does it actually feel like? Can you imagine? Can you remember? In There, There Stranger by John Ross, uncertainty arises in a labyrinth where anything is possible. Untangling different paths, the dancers go on a quest that gets physical: moving through darkness and light, from the scary to the absurd. Both works are commissioned thanks to The Choreography for Children Award 2014 produced by Sadler’s Wells, Company of Angels, The Place and LCDS in partnership with MOKO Dance. Photo: Pippa Dodds

Ultima Vez What the Body Does Not Remember Tuesday 10 & Wednesday 11 February The amazing debut of Wim Vandekeybus and Ultima Vez in 1987 stunned the world of dance at the time. Vandekeybus and composers Thierry de Mey and Peter Vermeersch received the prestigious Bessie Award in New York for this “brutal confrontation of dance and music: the dangerous, combative landscape of What the Body Does Not Remember.” 28 years later and with a new cast and live music by contemporary ensemble Ictus, the show still stands as one of the most exciting pieces of dance ever made and is once again on an unmissable world tour.
Performance Times & Prices Tue & Wed at 7.30pm £12 - £27 Free post-show talk (BSL-interpreted): Tue
Presented as part of a Dance Touring Partnership tour
Vandekeybus’ first piece of choreography balances on the razor edge of attraction and repulsion. Dancers are driven to act and react at high speed and with split second timing, to each other, and the music. Moments of humour thread through explosions of aggression, fear and danger in this adrenaline-fuelled distinctly physical performance.

François Chaignaud & Cecilia Bengolea altered natives’ Say Yes To Another Excess - TWERK Thursday 5 & Friday 6 March François Chaignaud and Cecilia Bengolea have been provoking audiences from Paris to Tokyo with their fresh perspective on dance. Their sexually-charged work springs from a wide outlook on what constitutes dance, and a desire to challenge how dance history is written. In their new work, they delve into their personal history of clubbing with an unusual anthropological take, physically examining free styles such as Jamaican dancehall, 70s voguing and today’s twerking. Together with New York voguer Alex Mugler, contemporary performers Ana Pi and Elisa Yvelin, Chaignaud and Bengolea have set themselves the challenge to trust dance and its poetic, expressive powers to create something immediate and visceral.

The piece is also a joyous exploration in grime music. An electro music form born in East London in the early 2000s, the genre combines sounds from dancehall, hip hop and UK garage, bringing the urgency of its MCs to an abstract yet ferocious synthetic sound. Leaders of the new grime wave DJs Elijah and Skilliam mix live on stage in this bold and energising performance.

English National Ballet Modern Masters Tuesday 10 - Sunday 15 March Modern Masters honours the work of three of the most influential choreographers of the 20th century: Jiří Kylián, John Neumeier and William Forsythe. Bold and galvanising, their choreographies are full of invention, energy, driven by music. Jiří Kylián’s poetic Petite Mort features six men, six women, and six fencing foils, symbolising energy, silence and sexuality. Performed to the slow movements of two Mozart Piano Concerti, the foils slowly become dancing partners, as the brutality of everyday life is revealed.

Spring and Fall was created by Hamburg Ballet’s John Neumeier. Set to Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings in E Major, it is a work for two couples and corps de ballet and takes its narrative from the tension in the music. Spring and Fall is not in the repertoire of any other UK company. With In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated, William Forsythe started a new school of choreography, deconstructing classical ballet. Set against a bare stage it is danced by nine individuals culminating in a fierce display of technical and physical wizardry. Photo: David Jensen Photo design: Charlotte Wilkinson Studio

Ahnen, first performed in 1987, features a similarly diverse score, and takes place in a thorny desert-scape, conceived by long-time set designer Peter Pabst.

During her 40 years of choreographing, Pina Bausch developed an artistic canon renowned for its diverse cultural influences and rich visual style. These two pieces capture Bausch at the height of her powers, remaining as fresh and exciting now as when they were first performed.

Wild Card Katye Coe: Preparation Friday 24 April Wild Card returns with more specially curated evenings from a new generation of dance makers, bringing fresh perspectives to the stage. For each Wild Card, an up-and-coming artist is given the opportunity to present their own work alongside works by artists they admire.
Performance Times & Prices 8pm Pre-show activities and extra content to be announced. See website for details. £17
Katye is a dance artist practising as a performer (Station House Opera, Florence Peake), curator (Decoda), maker and teacher (Coventry University) . One of her latest works, the running intervention ‘(to) Constantly Vent’ was recently presented at the Hayward Gallery. Her practice reaches across forms and communities, informed by the belief that thinking happens differently when it is located in dancing or moving. Improvisation is a core aspect of her work, as is collaboration. This evening is curated by Katye in conversation with Charlie Morrissey, dance artist and collaborator (Steve Paxton, Siobhan Davies). Katye has anchored this evening through key questions in their evolving duet, where we are not. The performers' visceral presence makes visible the live-ness of decision making. Sound artist Graeme Miller and philosopher Alva Noe will also contribute works igniting the idea of ‘preparation’. Photo: Gian Paolo Cottino

Rambert with Tredegar Town Band and the Rambert Orchestra Tuesday 12 - Saturday 16 May Live on the Sadler's Wells stage, the full ranks of Tredegar Town Band, 2013 British Open Champions, propel Rambert's wonderful dancers in Dark Arteries, the world's first brass band dance work. Composer Gavin Higgins (who wrote the opening piece for 2014’s Last Night of the Proms) and Rambert Artistic Director Mark Baldwin have created a work that is powerful and uplifting, celebrating how brass band music endures as the legacy of the communities which mined the coalfields – the “dark arteries” – of Britain. It is a dance which draws you into its emotional heart, even as the sound lifts the hairs on the back of your neck, then raises the roof. Dark Arteries forms the centrepiece of a new programme from Britain’s national dance company, which also includes the latest work from Alexander Whitley – “[his] cutting-edge contemporary choreography has made him one of the rising stars of Britain's dance scene” (GQ) – and a revival of celebrated US choreographer Lucinda Childs’ minimalist masterpiece Four Elements: “a classic by any standards” (The Times).

Boris Charmatz / Musée de la danse manger UK PREMIERE Tuesday 19 & Wednesday 20 May Since 2009 Boris Charmatz has been the director of the Centre choregraphique national de Rennes et de Bretagne, which he proposes to transform into a new kind of museum of dance. He is also the Associate Artist of the 2011 Festival d’Avignon, and was invited at MoMA (NY) in 2013 and at Tate Modern in 2012. Charmatz made his daring and provocative Sadler’s Wells debut in 2014 with the UK premiere of enfant, an intergenerational ensemble piece exploring the borders between the young and the old.
Performance Times & Prices Tue & Wed at 7.30pm £12 - £27 Pre-show Director’s Conversation: Wed, 6 - 6.45pm £4 Part of Musée de la danse in London: presented by Sadler's Wells and Tate Modern
For this new work, manger, Charmatz investigates how to set bodies in motion not with the eyes or with the limbs, but with the mouth. The mouth acts as the crossroads where food, voices, breath and words meet; a space where the self and the other engage, and ingest each other. Charmatz uses this metaphor as the vehicle for his choreography in manger, choosing to challenge the role that the mouth and eating play in choreography, dance and performance. Standing at the boundaries between a mobile installation and a performance piece, manger offers its audience what Charmatz terms a ‘swallowed reality’: a slow digestion of the world. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Boris Charmatz and Amandine Beyer Partita 2 UK PREMIERE Friday 22 & Saturday 23 May What happens when two choreographers, famed for directing large groups of performers, rejoice in their love for their own dancing? In a repertoire of over 40 works, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker – an icon of contemporary dance – has never composed a duet in which she would dance herself.
Performance Times & Prices Fri & Sat at 7.30pm £12 - £27
In Partita 2, a collaboration between herself and French choreographer and dancer Boris Charmatz, De Keersmaeker departs from her usual meticulous construction of dance, embracing the improvisatory instincts and whimsical flair of Charmatz. The piece is named for its score, from JS Bach, the structure and form of which De Keersmaeker reflects in this new choreography. Bach’s composition is performed by violinist Amandine Beyer, whose physical presence on stage lends the dance a sense of humility and intimacy, enhancing Michel François’ bare and beautiful set design in this exciting new collaboration from two of the most exciting names working in dance today.

Inspired by American movie culture and homemade YouTube videos, Patel looks at the multiple personas that we all inhabit in our day-to-day lives. Through a seamless synthesis of vocal and physical limitations, he revisits character impressions from his playground days: see Agent Smith from the Matrix argue with Michael Caine whilst Eddie Murphy dances alongside Spider-Man.

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui m¡longa Tuesday 9 - Saturday 13 June Deeply rooted in Argentinean culture, tango has fascinated and captivated the world with its sexuality, power and beauty. Cherkaoui’s m¡longa debuted in 2013, and is the first international large-scale tango production to be directed by a non-Argentine artist. After its highly successful UK premiere at Sadler’s Wells, m¡longa is now touring across the globe, to great critical acclaim offering audiences the chance to explore the traditional tango dance from another cultural perspective.
Performance Times & Prices Tue - Sat at 7.30pm £12 - £38 Free post-show dance class: Wed A Sadler’s Wells Production
Internationally renowned for his ground-breaking and critically revered award-winning productions such as Sutra and Babel(words), Cherkaoui takes the idea of a milonga as his starting point – those social dance-evenings held in intimate late night bars in Buenos Aires – and draws on traditional influences, adding a contemporary twist. Having collaborated with an incredibly talented cast of Argentinean dancers and live musicians, Cherkaoui has created “a very beautiful show indeed” (Daily Telegraph), bringing his own unique style to tango.

Alain Platel, Fabrizio Cassol, Rodriguez Vangama & Serge Kakudji Coup Fatal UK PREMIERE Thursday 4 - Saturday 6 June Inspired by the grand gestures of the rakish ‘sapeurs’ – the dandies of Kinshasa, Coup Fatal features Congolese countertenor Serge Kakudji, with an orchestra of 12 musicians from Kinshasa - engaging with the repertoire of various baroque composers. This new music integrates baroque phrases with traditional and popular Congolese music, rock and jazz.
Performance Times & Prices Thu - Sat at 7.30pm £12 - £27 Free post-show talk (BSL-interpreted): Thu
Composer Fabrizio Cassol and musician Rodriguez Vangama are the musical directors, while director Alain Platel and dancer Romain Guion seek to give the piece its theatrical form. The set is designed in collaboration with the artist Freddy Tsimba, who creates vast, disturbing sculptures using cartridge cases which he collects in Congolese war zones. An artistic platform for a variety of choreographers, les ballets C de la B enables artists from various disciplines and backgrounds to take part in the creative process, upholding its motto: ‘this dance is for the world and the world is for everyone’. KVS is a city theatre in Brussels. Working in a diverse city, it incorporates the topics of poverty and exclusion into its programming, as well as colonial history.

Philippe Decouflé Company DCA Contact UK PREMIERE Tuesday 16 - Thursday 18 June Philippe Decouflé is a creator of dreamlike performances, who finds inspiration in both high and popular culture and who challenges expectations with the use of the burlesque and the bizarre. With Contact, he creates a musical and visual comedy, a tale of our human – and sometimes superhuman – passions. As an artist trained in mime, bodily expression, the circus and dance by the likes of Isaac Alvarez, Annie Fratellini, Merce Cunningham and Alwin Nikolais, directing a musical is a natural conclusion for Decouflé.
Performance Times & Prices Tue - Thu at 7.30pm £12 - £32
He rewrites what the musical means for him, borrowing from cabarets, musicals and even flirting with Bollywood. Musical is simultaneously the subject, the source material, the dramaturgical structure, and the form. The score for this new endeavour has been created by Nosfell and Pierre Le Bourgeois, an opera from another world. In Contact, we witness the culmination of Decouflé's trademark cinematographic prowess and his fragmented sense of trickery and illusion, expressed through an extraordinary troupe of sixteen dancers, actors, singers and musicians.

Paco Peña Flamenco Dance Company Flamencura UK PREMIERE Saturday 20 - Sunday 28 June Guitarist, composer, dramatist and producer Paco Peña has expanded the possibilities and changed perceptions of flamenco in a career spanning five decades. He returns to Sadler’s Wells with his new show Flamencura. Art in all its forms has the potential of reaching a point of alchemy between interpreter and audience able to transport them into a mysterious level of emotion; a red-hot status capable of immersing the audience into an indescribable experience.
Performance Times & Prices Tue - Sun at 7.30pm Sat 27 & Sun 28 at 2.30pm £12 - £38 Free pre-show Flamenco classes: Sun 21 & Sun 28 at 6pm
In flamenco, this concept is referred to as ‘duende’. Performers never talk about it, but are always in pursuit of the inspiration that will allow them to get there, reaching total involvement in the art and deep communion with the audience. This elusive state can be referred to as the core of flamenco – artists will use all the ingredients available to them in order to achieve it. This show presents six musicians and three dancers bringing this together, adding a compound of qualities that their experience has provided them, everything that has taught them how and what makes that music be what it is. These elements, plus the character with which they are displayed amount to…Flamencura.

Akram Khan & Israel Galván TOROBAKA Tuesday 30 June - Sunday 5 July Akram Khan is one of the most celebrated and respected dance artists today. In just over a decade, he has created an imaginative, highly accessible and relevant body of work including productions such as DESH, Vertical Road, Gnosis and zero degrees. The multi award-winning Israel Galván has been at the forefront of contemporary flamenco for 20 years. Galván is known for his innovative choreography and exquisite dancing technique.
Performance Times & Prices Tue - Sat at 7.30pm Sun at 4pm No perf Thu £12 - £38
With this unique artistic exchange, Khan and Galvan made TOROBAKA by bringing together kathak and flamenco to create something new, distinctive and defying classification or genre. Returning after its highly anticipated UK premiere at Sadler’s Wells in Autumn 2014, TOROBAKA takes its name from a Maori-inspired phonetic poem by Tristan Tzara. The bull (toro) and the cow (vaca) are sacred animals in the dancers’ two traditions and represent the coming together of dance styles. Rather than mimicking one another, Khan and Galván create something new by better understanding each other’s approaches to their craft.

We need to talk: artists in conversation A new series of talks launches this spring, opening a space for debate about why dance matters today and how it relates to an expanding creative field. New names in dance and performance will invite leading creative voices to join them in conversation. These talks are a chance to hear from some of the most provocative and inspiring thinkers and artists currently working with movement and the body. Visual artist Hetain Patel, choreographer Matthias Sperling and artist and researcher Gillie Kleiman will each curate one talk, borrowing from various formats; from the relaxed TV chat show, to the serious artists’ talk, merging the private conversation and the public debate. More information to be announced: sadlerswells.com/artists-conversations
