Welcome to Sadler’s Wells This Summer / Autumn season offers a mix of what we do best at Sadler’s Wells - presenting outstanding dance from around the world together with our own productions and those of our Associate Artists. One special evening that we have put together is the second in our Composer Series which features the music of Thomas Adès. Four highly sought-after choreographers – Wayne McGregor, Crystal Pite, Karole Armitage and Alexander Whitley – will use his scores to create a mixed bill of epic proportions. I am very pleased to reveal that Thomas Adès will be conducting as well as performing in the evening. Occasionally we are able to present a season of work from a particular country or region and this autumn our Northern Light season features outstanding dance from the Nordic nations that is rarely performed in this country. As well as featuring one of the giants of dance, Mats Ek, with a major new production, Juliet & Romeo, this season will be a chance for you to discover new choreographers from the region and take advantage of our save 20% Multibuy offer to experience the work of new young talent. I am also particularly excited about what I’m sure will be one of the most explosive meetings of two great performing artists, Akram Khan and Israel Galván. Separately they have astonished Sadler’s Wells audiences with their artistry and virtuosity so the thought of them coming together is thrilling. I’m delighted that our audiences will have two opportunities to see Sylvie Guillem this season when she performs with Russell Maliphant in PUSH at the Coliseum and with Akram Khan in Sacred Monsters here at Sadler’s Wells. We are also bringing back Jasmin Vardimon’s extraordinary and original PARK and a real Christmas treat with the first major revival of Matthew Bourne’s Edward Scissorhands. Meanwhile, New Wave Associates TAO Dance Theatre take to the main stage for the first time, and the BalletBoyz present their new show Young Men. From November, our friend The Snowman makes his annual visit, rounding off a lively season in the Peacock Theatre, which also features visits from The 7 Fingers and Ballet Revolución. It’s another packed season of the very best of dance and I hope to see you in one of our theatres soon.

Royal Swedish Ballet (Sweden) Mats Ek’s Juliet & Romeo Wednesday 24 - Saturday 27 September The world’s fourth oldest ballet company, Royal Swedish Ballet perform in London for the first time since 1995. To celebrate their 240th anniversary, Johannes Öhman, the director of the Royal Swedish Ballet commissioned renowned choreographer Mats Ek to create a full length adaptation of a timeless love story for 32 of the company’s dancers. Having created many new interpretations of classics, Ek’s Juliet & Romeo attracted much acclaim both in its native Sweden and internationally. Making its UK premiere this autumn, Ek brings a quirky twist to this much-loved ballet. Juliet & Romeo is set to a score by Tchaikovsky – rather than the more traditional Prokofiev – adapted and arranged by Anders Högstedt. This new production features scenography and costume design by Magdalena Åberg. The Renaissance-inspired costumes are given a modern twist, while the dark, urban setting helps bring this classic love story into the 21st century. Pairing a contemporary aesthetic with dynamic choreography and Linus Fellbom’s atmospheric light design, Ek places this romantic tale in a brutal environment strewn with conflict between characters and generations.

Mette Ingvartsen (Denmark) The Artificial Nature Project Thursday 18 & Friday 19 September Mette Ingvartsen has been forging a distinctive path in the last ten years, creating work concerned with questions of kinaesthesia and perception. Having collaborated with French choreographers Xavier Le Roy and Boris Charmatz, she is part of a generation of dance artists that considers choreography as a tool to think about the world and our relationship to it. For her first London performances, she brings her latest creation to an intimate space in a new partnership with the Platform Theatre at Central Saint Martins.

UK PREMIERE Thu & Fri at 8pm ÂŁ17 Free post-show talk: Thu

save 20% The Artificial Nature Project is the latest in a series of four works staging perceptions and sensations of nature, asking the question: What is the relationship between the animate and inanimate world? The outcome is a performance that literally throws things around. Materials fly through the air, giving rise to a landscape that constantly transforms itself. Throughout the performance the view is persistently changing: a calm contemplative site gives way to an energetic chaos of debris projected into space. The emerging choreography is partly performed by humans and partly by materials and objects, as one image is replaced by another, rapidly altering our perception of a glittering landscape.

The company performs two pieces, choreographed by artistic director Rodrigo Pederneiras. The first piece is entitled Triz - the Brazilian term for the moment just before a catastrophe. The abstract dance is performed in striking black and white costume, and sees performers’ bodies vertically split like inanimate objects. Performed for the first time in the UK, Triz is a visually stunning dance experience. The second of these, Parabelo, was described by Pederneiras as his most Brazilian creation and is inspired by life in rural Brazil. It sees the dancers sweep across the stage moving rhythmically from group to solo and back again. There are moments of utter peace and stillness and others of raucous Brazilian carnival.

“A gorgeous rendering of a family favourite” WHATSONSTAGE on Beauty and the Beast

Birmingham Royal Ballet Beauty and the Beast / Shadows of War Tuesday 14 - Saturday 18 October One of the UK’s best loved companies, Birmingham Royal Ballet returns with a family favourite from David Bintley and a triple bill featuring three short works on the theme of war. In Beauty and the Beast, a cruel Prince, cursed to spend his life living in a castle finds salvation in the heart of a beautiful girl. The girl, a hideous beast, a golden ballroom full of animals, two haughty sisters and a grumpy grandmother dance through the unfolding pages of Philip Prowse's stunning storybook set. To a score by Glenn Buhr, rich choreography brings to life magical transformations, wild waltzes, and a relationship that is at first terrifying, but ultimately beautiful. Shadows of War opens with Kenneth MacMillan’s La Fin du Jour, capturing the glamorous lifestyle of the 1930s wealthy, using Maurice Ravel’s score to create an elegy to a lifestyle lost to World War II. Miracle in the Gorbals has been specially re-created for the Company by Dame Gillian Lynne, from Robert Helpmann’s original work set in 1940s Glasgow and danced to music by Sir Arthur Bliss. The programme closes with David Bintley’s Flowers of the Forest; with music by Malcolm Arnold and Benjamin Britten, it contrasts picture-postcard Scotland with its own bloody history.

He also performs an extract of his latest duet with long-time collaborator Simone Kenyon. These three pieces explore how we engage with the world and each other.

In a theatre stripped of seating, this intimate triple bill aims to draw attention to the different ways in which an audience member is an active participant in co-creating a dance. This is an invitation to take part in an evening of shared experiences and multiple transformations.

Jasmin Vardimon Company PARK Monday 10 & Tuesday 11 November Sadler's Wells Associate Artist Jasmin Vardimon is a leading force in British dance theatre. Enjoying sell-out performances across the UK and internationally, her company’s works include Freedom, Justitia, 7734 and Yesterday. She returns this autumn with a new version of her hit show PARK, the first of Vardimon’s large scale stage works. PARK is an urban oasis, a place of refuge from ordinary life where eight characters play, fight, fall in love and learn to survive. In this playground of relationships, young lovers wrestle in a historic fountain, a graffiti artist sprays his story, a busker finds his only appreciative audience in a bag lady, and a flag-waving bully rants worn out political beliefs. Their stories intertwine creating a modern day fairytale that is alternately sharp, funny and cruel.

“Startling sensual 21st Century motion. This is no rehearsal. It’s the real deal” THE GUARDIAN

zero visibility corp. (Norway) …it’s only a rehearsal Tuesday 11 & Wednesday 12 November What does it mean to be seen? What part does the gaze play in our construction of the world around us? This powerful, physical duet revolves around a pair of lovers, who set aside performative elements and ornate scenery to unravel a relationship using pure physical expression. …it’s only a rehearsal takes inspiration from the Greek myth of Artemis and Acteaon, in which the goddess Artemis wreaks revenge on Acteaon after he sees her bathing naked. Artemis punishes the hunter by turning him into a deer, and Acteaon’s own dogs tear him to pieces.

Cullberg Ballet (Sweden) Plateau Effect Thursday 13 & Friday 14 November Cullberg Ballet has performed across the world since its inception in 1967 by the pioneering Swedish choreographer Birgit Cullberg. The company collaborates with a variety of national and international choreographers and performing artists to present contemporary dance in a distinctly Swedish style. As part of the Northern Light season, the company makes its Sadler’s Wells debut with the UK premiere of Plateau Effect.

In this new work, Dutch/Swedish choreographer Jefta van Dinther seeks to challenge audiences with a layering of choreography, light, sound and set. In Plateau Effect, the dancers form a community that is constantly on the move as they progress through a series of disorienting and intriguing large scale environments. The viewer’s attention moves between the dancers’ movements and the materials they interact with, as the choreographer encourages the audiences to embrace what they do not understand.

“A showcase for the kind of exciting work for which Rambert is famous” THE TIMES

Rambert Triptych - Mark Baldwin, Shobana Jeyasingh, Ashley Page Tuesday 18 - Saturday 22 November From underground depths to the outer-reaches of the cosmos, Rambert's new show takes you inside a series of unique worlds. They spring from the imaginations of three of British dance's most distinctive artists and are inhabited by the company's world-class dancers. The discovery of the 'God Particle' inspires The Strange Charm of Mother Nature, the new work by Rambert's Artistic Director Mark Baldwin. The dancers fizz with the energy of the miniscule building blocks that created life, the universe and everything. Subterrain is a sensuous, enigmatic voyage underground, created by former Scottish Ballet Director Ashley Page – “a compelling piece, immaculately danced” (The Guardian). The programme is completed by a first work for Rambert by ground-breaking choreographer Shobana Jeyasingh. Accompanied by live orchestral music, ranging from JS Bach to Mark-Anthony Turnage, Triptych showcases the diversity and brilliance of Britain's national dance company.

Sylvie Guillem & Akram Khan Sacred Monsters Tuesday 25 - Saturday 29 November First performed in 2006, Sacred Monsters is the hugely acclaimed collaboration between Sadler’s Wells Associate Artists Sylvie Guillem and Akram Khan. Together, the pair explore the dynamics and language of two great classical dance forms, kathak and ballet, to produce a “five-star display of speed, precision and power” (The Guardian). Used in France in the 19th century as a nickname for theatre’s biggest stars, Sacred Monsters is a term that marks the birth of contemporary stardom, in which the icons of the arts and sports worlds are given divine status by their audience and the media. The pressure of living up to these expectations leaves no room for failure, self-expression or emotion. The divine status becomes inhuman, monstrous.

HHHHH “Magical. Wonderfully inventive. A gem” THE OBSERVER

Arthur Pita The Little Match Girl Saturday 13 December - Sunday 4 January Celebrated choreographer Arthur Pita brings his magical dance theatre show The Little Match Girl to Sadler's Wells this Christmas. Based on Hans Christian Andersen's classic story, this touching tale of a young street girl's hopes and dreams is beautifully told through dance, song and original live music. A snowy stage sets the scene for an icy cold Christmas eve, where the little match girl paces the emptying streets, trying to sell her matches. Cold, hungry and with just one final match flame to keep her warm, she sees a vision of her beloved grandmother. Leaving her troubled life behind, she is guided up into the night sky by her grandmother who takes her to the moon. Now, on a clear night, if you look closely, you might see the light of a shooting star, or is it a match burning brightly? Arthur Pita returns to Sadler’s Wells following the huge success of Mischief, a family show created in collaboration with Theatre Rites, which also enjoyed a season on Broadway. His recent adaptation of Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis at the Royal Opera House won Olivier, South Bank Sky Arts and Critics Circle National Dance Awards.
