Hi Everyone! So flew away the first month of spring. And we are ready to present you a new issue of our magazine. The delay in the release of the magazine for the week, but rather a delay in the presentation of the issue related to the Easter holidays. We attempted in this issue focus on urbanism ... I hope we have succeeded. In addition, we are currently working on a new magazine - (Erotique) Magazine. Therefore, the authors whose work is not included in this issue, don't worry. Your work, we will present in a future release. Enjoy. Your Ed Safin. (CIRKUMFLEKS)Magazine

'Hover' by Svetlana Safin Shows Adults Having Fun like Kids 'Hover' by Svetlana Safin is a photo shoot that captures childhood fun on the playground. The models swing from swing sets and jump from rope ladders in a park setting that makes me instantly think of recess, albeit with an adult twist. We've seen a rise in innovations that show adults having fun like kids. This childhood-channeling speaks to our inherent need to seek happiness and an escape from the doldrums of work and the economy. Chcek out more shots of 'Hover' by Svetlana Safin above. Jean-Sébastien Monzani

Lausanne (Switzerland)

Bio Jean-Sébastien Monzani is a Swiss and French freelance photographer, graphic-designer, illustrator and video-artist born in 1975. Emotion, elegance, simplicity, a strong sense of composition and colour are key elements in his work. His artistic approach often conveys a story, although some elements remain mysterious and are left to the viewerʼs interpretation - sometimes evoking something uncanny. Therefore, it is not surprising to hear JeanSébastien citing magic realism in literature as a major source of inspiration (with authors such as Haruki Murakami, Jorge Luis Borges or Dino Buzzati) - as well as visual poetry in performance arts. His recent works also exhibit an interest in the human body and its relationship with its environment.

N3. 2013

About the series: INTERSTICES Photos of the INTERSTICES series carry several themes: the lack of certainty in our everyday perception of the world and a reconsideration of our social interactions. It is difficult to define the kind of mystery that emerges from them (in a sense close to Magritteʼs) which may find its source in both the form of the image and its background. On the form, several approaches are blended: the location, first of all, real but dramatized through the lighting of the scene. Then, the relationship between body and its environment: a formal view on the body, without symbolism or naturalism. This body is directly confronted to reality (within mundane settings), and invites the viewers to reflect on their own relationship with themselves. In short, I'm focusing on a body that is neither purely “functional” nor required to behave in a social environment.

(CIRKUMFLEKS)Magazine

N3. 2013

Finally, the interaction between characters of these photographs suggests, without being specific, relationships and links. The functions and roles of the models are also unclear and their somehow neutral clothes canʼt help us much. A narrative storyline seems to emerge but its interpretation is left to the viewer. It lives somehow “out of the picture” and stimulates imagination. Memories provide in some cases the base of these photographs. They are often combined with a process of exploration of the unconscious. I can equally get inspired by personal elements or by memories of anonymous people who are then be reinterpreted non-literally by actors and dancers.

Ultimately, this approach of mystery exposes different feelings: anxiety, irony, the emergence of the uncanny (Unheimlich) ... This is a visual evocation of the same feelings as carried by novels of the "magic realism" literature. Reconsidering the body in a social environment is present in the performance arts (dance, theater) from which we sometimes borrow methods during the creation process.

INTERSTICES ultimately revolves around two complementary notions: a mystery inherent in the image and its corollary, the freedom of interpretation of the viewer that photography questions directly.

Urbanism is also movement of the population to the urban areas (urbanization) or its concentration in them (degree of urbanization).

Mainstream vs. Alternative Urbanism In the book Cities and Design, Paul Knox refers to one of many trends in contemporary urbanism as the 驶aestheticization of everyday life始. Alex Krieger studies urbanism theory in order to provide insight into how urban practitioners work. He identifies ten spheres in which urbanism takes place in practice. The ten are: the bridge connecting planning and architecture, a form-based category of public policy, the architecture of the city, urban design as restorative urbanism, urban design as an art of place- making, urban design as smart growth, the infrastructure of the city, urban design as landscape urbanism, urban design as visionary urbanism, and urban design as community advocacy or doing no harm. Krieger concludes by stating that urban design is less a technical discipline than a mind-set based on a commitment to cities. (CIRKUMFLEKS)Magazine

N3. 2013

In Three Urbanisms and the Public Realm, Douglas Kelbaugh of the University of Michigan writes about three urbanisms on the cutting edge of theoretical and professional activity in Western cities. These three paradigms include New Urbanism, Everyday Urbanism, and Post- Urbanism. He examines their overlaps and oppositions, methodologies and modalities, strengths and weaknesses, in the hope of sketching the outline of a more integrated position. (CIRKUMFLEKS)Magazine

N3. 2013

Concepts of Urbanism The pragmatic approach to urbanism promotes action above reflection. Pragmatism emphasizes a culture of inclusion within cities where contradiction and disagreement work to build stronger truths. The essence of pragmatism remains in contemporary daily life in urban area as main philosophical ingredient. Although the expression has used for over a century, it is not a fixed concept. While the world that the movement is rooted in has had many changes, as a frame to perceive the world, pragmatism also has experienced different levels of modifications. Those changes are very relevant to the development of cities and basic themes of pragmatism can be applied to the urbanism even more strongly. Anti-foundationalism and fallibilism closely connect to each other. In the same context of these two, the concept of cities is provisional and never absolute or certain, and pragmatists argue that the idea of space needs to be pliable and adaptable and able to cope with unpredictability and change. The notion of a community as inquirers is a continuing process of self-correction and spatial legitimacy is determined from the larger community in which they are presented, in this sense the idea of place will be sustained only as long as there is a community to support it. William JamesĘźs engaged pluralism encourages people to actively reach out to the points of intersection where people can critically engage with others. Under pragmatism there cannot be a platonic ideal of “placelessâ€? or an essential definition of place because the place is defined throughout continuous interactions with its dwellers. (CIRKUMFLEKS)Magazine

N3. 2013

John Dewey believed that the personification of knowledge in everyday practices was essential and the proactive question about the relationship between theory and practice connects to the idea of social responsibility. The theme of democracy was central to Deweyʼs version of pragmatism. He believed that in a democratic society, every sovereign citizen is capable of achieving personality. He argued that the concept of place should be open to experimentation for the hope of realizing a better world. According to Bernstein, “these themes are also basic applications of urbanism.” As pragmatism shares a history of development with modern cities, both pragmatists and urban practitioners have influenced each other. Dewey said that the interaction is human experience: 'For life is no uniform uninterrupted march or flow. It is a thing of histories, each with its own plot, its own inception and movement toward its close, each having its own particular rhythmic movement; each with its own unrepeated quality pervading it throughout.ʼ

Go to Sleep She waits in the window. There they see her standing ghostlike most afternoons with those hollow eyes. The drawn cheeks. Buzzed head. Faded cotton shift. She stares down upon them sitting on their green benches holding brown paper bags of pigeon feed among the blooming pear trees. Nods in recognition and lets the blinds down slowly. They can still make her long form standing faint behind the horizontal slats. Gives them the creeps. Finally one day Jermaine just throws his bag in the air and leaves. Seed scatters everywhere and he never comes back for afternoon feeding and chess. She notices. In the shadowed room there is one mattress on the floor. On the mattress there is a pink blanket with frayed silken ends. No chair. No door on the bathroom. Black plastic garbage bags stuffed with garbage. Bags upon bags upon bags. The one accessible doorless kitchen cabinet is full of ramen and tuna jammed-in every-which-way. No can opener is visible. No rug is on the green and white tiled floor. No art or mirror on the cold white walls. She turns from the window after watching the pigeon men and sits knees-up to her shoulders in the middle of the old mattress rocking for hours with long bony arms bound around her legs so tightly that her knuckles and joints turn white. Her feet turn blue. (CIRKUMFLEKS)Magazine

John E. Glaze

Go to sleep. Go to sleep. Go to sleep my baby. Quietly she sings. Haltingly. The pigeon men no longer feed the pigeons as there are few to feed these days. They only play chess and glance up toward the window to see her standing there at her usual time slowly lowering the blinds as always. Lying on the mattress she touches tenderly a stomach flat as a washboard. She draws up her cotton shift and looks at herself rubbing gaunt fingers over pale midriff slight breasts and sings the song. Sometimes her voice carries a tinge of worry as it echoes within the plaster and tile cavern. In the Fall she is no longer seen at the window and a discussion is raised as to whether she has moved or died. Another discussion is why the population of pigeons has decreased. Perhaps now Jermaine will return and play. >>>>>

N3. 2013

She sits cross-legged in the center of the mattress with a small creature swaddled in the pink blanket. On the floor beside the mattress rests a stained rancid paper sack that reads Whole Foods. Within its depths she is pleased to discover a dead pigeon. Removing its head with a quick gnash of incisors she chews and crunches until it is pureed enough to deposit in her hand and offer down to the wrapped bundle. In a flurry of gurgled movement the meat is gone and blood drips from an index finger. She chuckles happily. My my my but you’re a hungry one. Waggling her injured finger in the air she maneuvers it into the spotted light from the blinds for inspection. It won’t be long and we’ll have to start carving the fatted calf won’t we? I knew you would come she says as she sucks on her finger and rocks in reassuring fashion. I knew you would come. I didn’t feel you dead in me.

PERSONAL STATEMENT All artists try to tell something to others. Some do this with a hammer, shaping the marble; others on their finger tips, dancing. The brush hits the canvas for some; there are words and music for others. Some others prefer to tell their stories through visual arts. I am one of those, using photography to tell my stories. I have always given special importance to memories. This has been a significant aspect of my personality and I believe this is why I have been interested in photography since I was a child. Freezing and storing time on papers where you can visit it when you would like to.... Considering the conditions available 30 years ago, this was a dream that was difficult to reach for a child who did not even have a camera. In those days, I used to focus on the moment that I wanted to store and blink my eyes so I believed I captured the time and stored the image in my mind to remember it. Today technological advances have provided me with the opportunity to live my childhood dreams as well as to have new ones.

(CIRKUMFLEKS)Magazine

At the beginning, I was interested in macro photography. Then, I found the opportunity to keep my thrill alive as I enriched my experience by shooting architecture, landscape, portraits and fashion. In this period, I have learnt that each category provides me with its joy. While I enjoy the details in macro photography, I feel more free when I shoot landscape and architecture that allow using wide angle lenses – it makes me feel part of the whole. Each shot brings a different joy to my experience. Sometimes I find myself in an architectural masterpiece that waits for the city lights while rests at the sunset; sometimes in two scrawny mushrooms that lean on each other in a wide lowland; sometimes in my model’s look or sometimes I find myself in waves breaking onto rocks at sunset. There are times that I want to take a picture that reflects how I feel or what I think so I search for the visual that will express those emotions and thoughts. There are times I find an image which is pictured many times; interpret it and make it a photo that is blended with my angle, emotions and thoughts.

N3. 2013

I believe it is important to examine the object to be pictured very well and set the direction to be focused in a right way in order to take pictures effectively. After I adjust the technical equipment and lightening to make such a focus possible, I prepare the photos in a digital environment. Preferences in all these areas allow the photographer to reflect his/her style. Being aware of this reality, I try to make my photos reflecting my preferences so make them unique.

My work is inspired by the relationshi p between humans and the natural world. These images convey both a sense of sadness and longing for a lost connection to the world, as well as that of optimism; a hope for the possibility of rediscovery and reconnection. Oregon, USA

(CIRKUMFLEKS)Magazine

I use digital tools to create imagery that is figural, imaginative and emotional, with a fantastical / surreal edge. This dichotomy of something natural, imaginative and organic coming from a mechanical source is a way to show that though it is a construct of humanity, technology is not entirely removed from nature or our experience of the natural world. It is a human interaction that allows for the creation of something meaningful.

Her art works could tell stories or could show you the story teller. She is a graphic artist noted for her work on characters and fantastic creatures. Some of her drawing compositions could seem very chaotic but if you look closely you will see the melancholy and in its sadness you could notice purity, beauty and relaxation. Zina also work on illustrating, customizing small objects with her illustrations as old pocket watches or bracelets, badges, etc. Art for her is a way of portraying feelings, thoughts, opinions or just a point of view. It gives her the ability to create, whether a drawing or a doll or any kind of creature that other people would enjoy. She can find inspiration in music, people, odd things and creatures on the side of the road, art materials, old fabrics. Little things that could be just sitting there in the corner, unnoticeable for others, old and forgotten often are start point for her works. She refers to the oddness of everything.

City and the World Changeant Trapier

[innerside]look

The city encourages the formation of personality It would be naive and misleading to say that urban civilization emerging in European cities. Ancient cities were just as important for the development of Western culture, but it must be acknowledged that with the advancement of civilization to by the north, , into the European yuriy ratush territory arise the first sprouts urbanization. City deserves a separate discussion, for it is the city civilization ruined medieval and that the development of the information component of the city has given impetus to the development of modern urban civilization. Let's start with the XII century - the flowering of the initial rise of the cities and the era of scholastic learning, when, along with theology sprouts secular education, interest in the ancient authors have done the first step to recovery. Chivalry, encrusted among castles and civil wars, touching the tip of the urban society, partly attached to the intellectual currents in developing cities. The medieval city was full of life, day and night. Townspeople here had privileges that are lost outside the city gates, the gentleman had to temper the usual imperious, monks could leave here on charges of vice and debauchery to the townspeople. Urban life was thoroughly secular, because canon law in hardly worked. In connection with the new focus on worldly amusements and aestheticization of life awakens interest in intimate personal matters, and the issue of feelings. (CIRKUMFLEKS)Magazine

If troubadours metaphysics of love, the idealization of the sublime courtly sense emerges and thrives only among the nobility of knights' castles, with their feudal wars, tournaments, entertainment and strife, the urban society has a completely different ideology. Original function of the city - trade. Although nobles despised me and moneylenders, they can not do without their services. The city covers transactions, purchased mercenaries being negotiated. Manage without the commercial sector and mediation of literate knight pot possible. The bourgeoisie appears, a class that is not directly engaged the production, but it is concentrated in there hands the benefits. n addition to the merchant class considerable proportion of the society generally are residents of the university campus students, professors and employees of the university. They deal with abstract objects, with a theoretical exposition of others or their own views and ideas. Value of a person depends on whether he is dressed in a student robe, or have a professor's hat, and to earn the appropriate attire is necessary to have an opinion and defend it, armed with a thesis and evidence to demonstrate their abilities. Whatever the origin, once the student got to the university he could brilliantly to express himselves in studies and raise his social status and wealth. City makes possible the transition between social classes. It is in the university environment more clearly the tendency of personality, as a measure of human value. Personality becomes important in the world, which already weighed and evaluated parameters such as title and gentility, wealth and communication, military valor and beauty. Scholarships and courtly love brings to the foreground their own views and the ability to demonstrate it. That opens up the discussion of personality window to the world. Ability to carry on a conversation, keep the discussion to defend your opinion, to operate theses and use different arguments - the ancient art of rhetoric becomes a valuable and out of church councils.

Make the Leap, which reaches its peak in the era of the Renaissance - the person comes to the fore. Only urban life and way could to stimulate development in the human personality, to declare an independent value of a single person, regardless of his community or gentility. This development is impossible in the rural, communal form society, or to a limited clan system knight's castle, where a person's worth is determined by its functionality. Healthy woman destined to give birth and work in the field and no character could not outweigh the need to continue the race and support the family. Strategic talent and fighting skills were important to the knight and military leader, and a squad of soldiers he could buy for money or to win over political considerations. A good blacksmith was important to the village because of the work they performed, and not regarding his personal qualities. The others had very little interest about them, their thoughts and views, their task was to ensure the result.

City and costume Drawing and sketch Forming of the suit related to the architectural forms closer than it may seem at first glance. The suit - the first shell surrounding the body, the house - the second. There are parallels in the likening of the dress and the home from the beginning of human civilization, but in any historical epoch, there is close communication and assimilation of the suit as a full set, with the architectural ensemble. Especially, it is a gothic era, when even an inexperienced observer notices identical lines in architecture and human garb. Especially characteristic is that the inherent dynamics of the Gothic style specific lines and volumes appear in a European suit before in architecture.

Suit as non-random combinations of objects, a full feature set of all similar works of architecture, which houses a person. Both are characterized not only a deep understanding of the constructive solutions, but also the emotional and psychological impact on the viewer, which is the main goal. Clothing at all times is like a sketch of the future architectural achievements. Naturally, the term of its production is much less than the construction of buildings, and what we see today attired, will be embodied the day after tomorrow in brick, concrete, stone and glass. Unlike buildings, established once and for all and essentially unchanged for many years and centuries, suits changes not only from day to day, when it is replaced by another, but depending on the posture and the posture of the owner, from his position on the mood. These changes are fleeting, and from this they are more valuable. In order to see them, you don't need to be a connoisseur, they present themselves, allowing freely be judged by everyone, and understood to all. They make the eye to attached strongly to the object of admiration, without stopping to watch the play of folds and drapes, which are now only an allude to the existence of the body beneath, and in an instant can imagine it so vividly, as in real life. This is the core value of a suit of medieval Europe and its special role as an instrument for the manifestation of fantasy latitude, developed personality, rich in personal luggage and creativity, not departing from the strict confines of the traditions and practices of conventional morality, rules of conduct and rules of etiquette . It is from the heritage of medieval European dress arises our modern way of dressing. New time with his formal men's suits and women's exaggerated-volatile fashion could not give the individual the freedom of expression, which is necessary for the harmonious development of the mind and get recognition from others.

N3. 2013

The modern world can not satisfy our need for unconditional love and admiration, we are often doomed to engage into unloved work and not having enough in what express ourselves without having artistic inclination. The suit as the outward expression of our personality and common tools, can fully satisfy our aesthetic preferences, and the desire for selfexpression, and so important in today's environment, selfdeclaration. Today, as in the Middle Ages, the suit again carries information about the personality and tastes of her openly. Fortunately for us, the tools by which we transform the suits component of our way of life, has become so diverse that we can practically without loss of semantic value to express all our tastes, views and positions. Now, in the era of any fashion, each of us can, if he wishes, to make a showcase of his appearance, his qualities and remain beyond the bounds of decency and stand out from the layers of meaning.

[innerside]look

Urbanism in suit In what way the dress of a modern man can remind us architectural forms, sketch that surround it in a modern city? We will not go into the sources of inspiration used by architects and designers, because if the fruits of their work will found a common denominator, then both sides get a completely nonutilitarian and unattractive appearance. Now, when construction times faster than the release of a new season collection, we could not be more helpful with indirect analogy, association and interpretation. Yes, yes, since the perfume were advertised in magazines by recreating the association of a number, which pushed for their creation, these concepts again in the course of not only astrologers and fortune-tellers card. We all have to interpret the information that comes to us through the senses in the form of images, and shift it into words.

Today's fashion has much greater impression than any whatsoever of those that were before it. If before the looks could talk almost literally, now the one who want to understand and figure out, need not only be carefully and study the external image, but also to call on an enormous cultural layer, in which the object of study. There is no longer the straightforwardness with which the red heels said, "We are of the highest society", socks Poulin shouted "We are allowed", diamonds coming with a warned that "I was already married". Today crimson is not synonymous with power, and even the logo of fashion houses have ceased to be the markers of social status, as it was until recently. At first glance, everything is mixed in the cities - the influential people buy bags of invisibility, on which is impossible to say who produced them, even inside out and huge shiny buildings can be social centers, offices and not banks, urban sculptures are just as pretentious and incomprehensible, as acutely fashionable jewelry. Monuments finally come down from the pedestal as well as financial bigwigs descend into the subway, to be in place in time. And those as the others the general public rarely knows in person. Takes quite a perspicacity to read around the endless urban chronicle of events occurring every minute. Sometimes colorful and motley crowd in the streets seems completely alien to the shining buildings of glass and concrete, which is over us, over our heads. Seems to us that in the past people and their cities more correlated with each other, but are missing one important point. Architecture like it or not, is a long-term strength investment. We still look up at the spiers of the Cathedral, Egyptian stelae around the world and step pyramids of antiquity down to the amphitheater and enter the shadow of ancient columns. We, the people, have changed little since the times of contemporary antiquity. Builders porticoes and arches embody the same emotions and aspirations that our contemporary architects have tried to express the same idea.

We have every right to appropriate them, to be exact - to regain. Greatness, excellence, dignity - that the declaration of all the ancient cities and all the modern once. Yes, we see them differently, but mean the same. Isn't it the same effect we see in the development of the dress? Do not forget that we are all the same as the last few centuries. We still want to please others, to express their views and tastes, feel confident and attractive. Yes, our tastes have changed, but our feelings are the same. What transmits us the city and the world around us? He says - speed. The speed and ease - the two most pressing concepts today. How, then, they are broadcast on the objective environment? Let's see. Fashion theorists distinguish so-called "salon, urban, smooth" type appearance and consequently how to dress, and in contrast to them "rustic, country, rough." How do they differ obviously, each of us can easily distinguish the urban woman from the village simpleton, and even the country gentleman is far different than the urban dandy. Is urbanwear less functional than rural? Of course not, its functionality is completely different. The townspeople, as well as a few centuries ago, have much less potential for interaction, it is because of the higher population density. No time to talk to anyone, to isolate from the crowd suitable interlocutor to identify similar partner, urban residents are developing an alarm system of high functionality and operate it smoothly. Yes, everything is mixed up and urban eclecticism may terrify. But that it is the canvas on which are written all the messages of each of us. Eclecticism just means that of the widest object environment everyone can choose things that are broadcasting something that is a personal message. Strict dark suit and elegant dress - this is one set of associations, and wide pants skaters and artists rap - very different. Both these sets of equal functionality, they allow their owners to perform their functions in full.

Full adherence to the current fashion of the last season, said the high relevance of the individual in the environment, and a catchy combination of contradictory elements shows willingness to change the world. Someone regrets about past times in numerous frills Dickens Boho, and someone tends to the future in an environment of high-tech materials and original designs of clothes. Some people are still nice antique environmental sandals, and others are willing to sell their souls for a heel to be a little bit higher. Each item of clothing is his signal. Even a bag of invisibility in hand indecently rich man said that her owner used to enjoy quality of status things, but does not want to serve only as a backdrop for these items. One of the most distinctive features of the urban style is a combination of expensive and long-term affairs with cheap ephemeral. No one will be bothered about closeness of status and junk items. Combines and looks stylish or simply declares broad nature of the owner, is not so important. The duty border disappears when the red heels are the allowed to the townspeople, and the length of socks carefully measured. The concept of uniforms and dress code still lives, but its have new features - not restrictive, but about the status. The obligation to wear a jacket work turns on the other hand is not only an abundance of casual sportswear for the weekend, as it was before, but often the presence of acutely fashionable, grand things for status activities - golf, yachting, opera. Until recently, we knew that members of the upper class dress elegant and restrained, and even their children can not afford to brazen and shocking clothing and behavior. Whereas social rank and file dress and behave relaxed, without being burdened nor by family honor, nor dependence on the press. Now this limit is significantly shifted and erased, but continues to be certain. To read those messages, you need to be careful and pay attention to the labels! The auspices of the social elite is still naturalness - natural materials, sparing styling, high-quality cuts.

Even teenagers understand this, because all the jeans have a different cost. Jeans really ripped, torn and designer of world renown. Shoes that mimic the dirt and scratches. Dull heirloom jewelry. Possibly ahead of us counter-urbanization when people begin to return to the country and enjoy living in close contact with nature. Todays speed of information exchange is on the such level that even a financial company can be managed without going out in your own garden. Downshifter we have already shown that success is not always associated with the presence in the glass and concrete. Again begin to be popular ethnic motifs in clothing, then that ten years ago there was an old, now respectfully called vintage. People are really starting to wear those clothes, which just a few decades ago, they would not put for the sake of carnival. We are again redefining social roles and gender roles, re-evaluate the philosophy of their ancestors and are looking for meaning in the current way of past eras. We are looking for harmony with the environment in the same way as looking for the history of mankind. Only now we have a distinct advantage - as a civilization, we are able to transform the environment for yourself as well as to change yourself.

Tokyo is often thought of as a city but is commonly referred to as a "metropolitan prefecture". The Tokyo metropolitan government administers the 23 Special Wards of Tokyo (each governed as an individual city), which cover the area that was formerly the City of Tokyo before it merged and became the subsequent metropolitan prefecture. The metropolitan government also administers 39 municipalities in the western part of the prefecture and the two outlying island chains. The population of the special wards is over 8 million people, with the total population of the prefecture exceeding 13 million. The prefecture is part of the world's most populous metropolitan area with upwards of 35 million people and the world's largest urban agglomeration economy with a GDP of US$1.479 trillion at purchasing power parity, ahead of the New York metropolitan area in 2008. The city hosts 51 of the Fortune Global 500 companies, the highest number of any city. (CIRKUMFLEKS)Magazine

As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world. The New York City Metropolitan Area's population is the United States' largest, with 18.9 million people distributed over 6,720 square miles (17,400 km2), and is also part of the most populous combined statistical area in the United States, containing 22.1 million people as of the 2010 Census

São Paulo (/ˌsaʊ ˈpaʊloʊ/; Portuguese pronunciation: [sɐ̃w ˈpawlu] ( listen); Saint Paul) is the largest city in Brazil, the largest city proper in the southern hemisphere and Americas and the world's eighth largest city by population. The nonspecific term "Grande São Paulo" ("Greater São Paulo") covers multiple definitions. The legally defined Região Metropolitana de São Paulo consists of 39 municipalities in total and a population of 19,889,559 inhabitants (as of 2010 National Census). Because São Paulo has significant urban sprawl, it uses a different definition for its metropolitan area, Complexo Metropolitano Expandido. Analogous to the US's CSA (Combined Statistical Area) definition, it is the third largest city in the world with 27 million inhabitants, behind Tokyo and Jakarta, which includes 2 contiguous legally defined metropolitan regions and 3 microregions.
