“Striving To Be A Better Designer�
Introduction The first semester of third year was definitely a step up from 2nd year as projects were on a larger scale and projects posed a lot more design challenges which opened my mind into considering different factors as I worked on the various projects over the semester. From the Mavis bank project I learnt quite a bit as spaces could have so much potential in terms of developments and the infinite possibilities of space as the community can be very well sitting on a gold mine in terms of it being the Gateway to the Blue Mountains as well as being a space of extreme interest for locals and tourists alike. On the other hand, College Green Housing Development was located off Hope Boulevard, Kingston, in the parish of St. Andrew. It was a three phase development that grew from strength to strength with major support coming from the residents, molding the scheme into a gated community where they feel safe and live comfortably. This scheme was very interesting as the beauty of the housing scheme was
mainly due to organization and efficient execution of tasks to meet the needs of all the residents of the community.
factors , especial y in this striving for sustainability within the urban context of Jamaica. From solving the unit design everything quite fell in to place as it was not as easy as many would think.
From both of these projects which were mainly group work, was geared towards the final project, which was a high density housing project. Groups were allotted to various sites located in downtown Kingston, which were all in close proximity of one another. The location of my scheme was on site 4, located on Haining Road.
The beauty of these projects, is that although it may be complete for this semester much more can always be done, in this field of architecture as indicated by lecturers and colleagues.
At first this project appeared to be one big Rubik’s cube posing a lot of challenges on every design decision made, which was very testing at times. The way I saw fit in solving these design challenges was to handle the bigger issues which for me was designing a functional unit, that works in terms of space, relation to the three types of residents, the factor of expansion for the young and expanding family and providing comfortable spaces which offer ventilation, light and airflow. Final Critique
HIGH Density Housing Project
SITE 4
…Unifying the masses in an Urban Context.
CONCEPT The idea behind my development is to create a community which combines a variety of residential offerings for persons of a diverse social demographic. This objective was pursued on both an urban planning and on an architectural level.. In terms of urban planning, the scheme strikes a difference from many other surrounding structures which suffer from poor planning, improper building practices which in turn impacts social practices and responsibility. The scheme strikes this difference through its architecture as it offers sustainability and spaces of interest with varying levels of privacy. These spaces also encourage and offer features such as security, safety, and community interaction. The spaces and experiences change from ground level to the relaxing and intriguing roof deck. Although the scheme mediates in the urban fabric by its appearance, but the characteristics of its design definitely sets it apart - hence providing its own identity.

From the context I like how the yellow bad wrap around the D.H.L Building. As it pertains to my structure I have a white strip wrapping around my structure. This white strip highlights the floor slab within the structure.

Conclusion I found this semester to be quite a good one, on a whole, just a bit stressing trying to balance other courses plus studio which is never an easy task. I am thankful that I managed to get by on my own steam and was able to present work of substance at every session and interim. I also found myself hustling to meet deadlines on a regular basis during the semester. I can definitely say I have learnt a great deal from listening to each lecturer over the semester and I believe it has helped me to grow as a designer. I also made use of the knowledge gained in 2nd year for when lecturers did not give guidelines as what exactly to do, which I did not have a problem because as designer in third year, one should know how to go about certain issues on our own. This semester I experienced that architecture is very personal and public at the same time which made me more confident within my decision making. I have reached the end of yet another semester by the grace of God. I look forward, towards next semester as I aspire to be more focused, expressive and more creative in terms of design, in the fast approaching new year.
