he arrival of winter signals a slow down and a natural tendency to begin a period of reflection to assess our lives over the past year. Some of us have defined winter not only by its obvious climate but by how it makes us feel inside and how this period of dormancy relates to nature. We’d like to call this time, The Waiting Period. This time can be used wisely to examine our personal confines and thresholds; to shed the old ways of being; and, to prepare ourselves to be reborn in the spring. We believe it’s also a time for self-evaluation - let go of what no longer serves you and become the absolute best version of yourself. With a few weeks left in the season, there is still time to delve into the final stretch of The Waiting
Period and experience something totally unique and life-changing. Winter is a season that is representative of shadowy quietness. What energies are you bringing into the highly anticipated promises of spring? Remember, be kind to the souls you meet along the way. Thanks for spending time with us. Love and Blessings,
The Collective

e can describe the season of winter by its atmospheric products such as snow, wind chill, ice, just downright cold. It looks like a dull gray color and lacks a certain vibrancy energetically seen compared to other seasons. It feels like nature is taking a necessary pause and does not want to be disturbed. Her dormant state is a reminder for us to do the same. For me, winter represents a time for hibernation and introspection. A withdrawal. A very quiet time. A time for regeneration. It can also represent a time for incubation to prepare for the beginning of a personal transformation marked by the arrival of spring. After all, transformation is part of the nature of things. The ebb and flow of all things in nature. I wasn’t always this aware. My world was a busy place and I never seemingly had time to slow down enough to reflect and respond to what I needed inside. I was very outwardly focused. You know, I had to do all the stuff on my ‘gotta do’ list. I had to be all the places, do all the things, stay focused on productivity, and ignored every warning signal my body emitted. Once I began to realize that I was suffering from burnout and subsequently an illness, I had to make a conscious shift in my thinking and my behavior. I started a vegetable garden and got in touch with nature. By paying attention to the cyclical nature of plants, I began to see the rhythm of the seasons and how it relates to all things, including humans. Therefore, if winter is the rest period for plants and animals, then we should rest too. Now, it is natural for me to connect my consciousness to the natural cycle of the seasons. Winter is a signal for me to step inside myself, slow down, and reflect on my growth and personal development at the end of the year. During this time, I acknowledge that I’ve done my best, treat myself with compassion, and rest when my body tells me to. And, when winter ceases, I acknowledge new beginnings and the possibility of renewal are at the helm at the dawning of spring.

ith muted tones, industrial finishes, and uncultivated greenery this bathroom speaks to several stages of life. There is a rebirth and renewal to the wild vines growing through quiet and unsettled times, to the shine and simple touches of green and gold. There is something to ponder from the bathroom cabinet invoking the word “think” to the quiet bench with an espresso and some light reading, inviting us to sit and cherish the day. While the noble deer stares at the candle-lined tub, the drama begins on the other side of the room, where we are being invited to be naked or transparent during the changing of seasons in life. The finishes around the room allow us to see masculine yet feminine touches throughout the space. What inspired this space was the stillness of simply being at peace with oneself and the ability to unwind while inhaling life. Music lyrics adorn this space as the raspy earthy Lalah Hathaway sings to Robert Glasper’s “Cherish The Day” melody.

his space was created as a love letter to the melanin art piece “She” in the corner from Berry Park. A lover of art and curves, several pieces from Berry Park adorn this space. In this lush space, earthy leather tones, rich wood tones, and wild vines soar in the background. The center word “Black Beauty” sets a defining undertone. Cade Lockwood, better known as “thee Cade”, is the genius behind the landscape in both of these spaces. Having a landscape to wrap this greenery gives hope as the new season slowly creeps in. Whether we are listening to the radio or an old-school cassette player, this art studio offers the opportunity for self-reflection while enjoying a watercolor sketch or cup of tea. Let your creativity flow and create something amazing for yourself! Until next time, thanks for allowing me to contribute something new to the atmosphere!

hroughout Second Life®, there are those who look to explore different environments but then there are others who create their own. Expression through interior decorating one can instantly tell a story and create an immersive environment for those who enter. We had the wonderful opportunity to experience the world of Paul Gils, an extraordinary decorator, consultant, and owner of Oberton on Second Life®.
My name is Paul Gils and I’ve been a Second Life® user for about 10 years now. There have been a few breaks during my time here, but I became more active in 2020, due to the pandemic. The decor style that I go for can be considered by many, to be outdated. Stylistically, it is quite close to maximalism, as I enjoy rich textures, cluttered objects, and lots of art. It is mostly comprised of
antiques. Many of the homes I enjoy creating are suited for those who are lovers of the arts. Therefore, you will find frames hanging everywhere, display stands, and cases to showcase various artworks. I believe that creating a cohesive mood that suits the owner of a home is the most important aspect when decorating. There are many creators that I appreciate but just
to name the few that I’ve been using the most lately are Lux Aeterna, Camden, Contraption, Theory, 8f8, and Nutmeg. For those who are aspiring decorators, do a lot of research in both real life and Second Life®. See what is out there. Learn as much as you can and bring your knowledge into Second Life® and do things your way.

wo familiar practices that we hear regarding wellness are self-care and self-love. Celebrating the relationship that you have with yourself can be beneficial and fulfilling. Are we aware that self-care and self-love are two separate practices? But one of them we cannot practice without the other? Let’s get into it! We all know that treating ourselves to things like taking a hot bath, having a massage or facial, or even taking a trip are some things to do to put us in a good mood. Some will associate these acts as a way to practice self-love when in actuality, it is a practice of self-care. Self-care is anything that you do to support or improve your physical body or your mental health. It’s you taking care of yourself or having people take care of you. On the other hand, self-love is about going deeper. It’s about creating distance from outwardly acceptance or ideas of perfection from others and examining and accepting what makes each of us unique - simply put, our true inner selves. It is about being in harmony within, accepting who we are - the likable and unlikable things about our being; our bodies, personality, and actions. It is about loving the real authentic you without trying to fit into someone else’s perception of perfection. Self-love involves having a high level of compassion for ourselves without heavy criticism. Many of us have been conditioned from childhood or adult experiences with ideas or pictures of perfection and we tend to evoke negative speak about ourselves when we don’t meet those expectations or perfection.
Having self-awareness, understanding how you think as well as valuing yourself, your self-esteem, and participating in selfcare rituals are integral and all-encompassing in the practice of self-love. The practice of self-love can be difficult and uncomfortable for some of us because it involves a lot of inner reflection, selfwork, and most importantly - self-acceptance. But understanding our inner truth, as well as our limitations, is what makes us unique and individually interesting. Isn’t that worth loving? Here are some affirmations that you could employ in your own practice towards self-acceptance and self-love: “Today, and every day, I choose joy.” “There are some things that I can’t change, and I am okay with that.” “Today, I will be the best version of myself.” “ Every situation is easy for me to handle.” “I am worthy of good experiences.” Want more suggestions for affirmations? Here is a blog we love.

ithin the last few years, the concept of selfcare has become highly publicized throughout the mainstream culture. From celebrities sharing trendy ways they care for their skin to streaming platforms publishing documentary series on folks journeying the world for ancient holistic health practices. Although self-care can be soothing to the soul and grounding to our bodies, one aspect of the topic isn’t spoken about enough shadow work. What is shadow work? Shadow work is the act of bringing our shadow parts to light. This can range from trauma that has been generational or experienced in our past, to the perpetuation of toxic patterns, to lack of self-esteem. Shadow work is a tool for us to heal and operate at our highest selves. When our shadow parts are repressed, this can manifest in various ways such as self-soothing with substances or alcohol, self-harm, stress, and even mental health issues including depression and anxiety. Without this type of self-care, we won’t be able to take full control of our livelihoods. Shadow work can be lonely, dark, and tumultuous but the results are only to our advantage and benefit. Moreso, not tuning towards our shadow can be more damaging in the long run. Once we’ve faced our shadow selves, heightened awareness of the subconscious becomes normal, our previous experiences such as trauma are validated. We can, therefore, move throughout the world with a newfound confidence in knowing we carry the power in creating our own stories. This also helps us interact in healthier ways within our relationships and express our needs in healthier ways.
What is Shadow Work?
How to do Shadow Work?
Create Space for the Work
Firstly, we want to state that shadow work takes time and patience. The process is never linear nor perfect. One may have breakthroughs one year and in the next, a trauma of the past resurfaces that was never realized. This work looks different for everyone. To start this journey, here are some ways you can tune into your shadow self. 1. Creating space for the work Curate an environment in which you feel safe, cozy, and protected. This can range from lighting candles, making your favorite tea and snacks, getting blankets, etc.
Meditation
2. Meditation The act of meditation is for us to bring awareness to our thoughts rather than to empty our minds. When we sit in silence and observe our thoughts as a practice it allows us to separate ourselves from the idea that we are our thoughts, but rather our thoughts and subconscious are results of our past and previous environments.
3. Journaling Similar to meditation, journaling allows us to become aware of ourselves all while expressing and unpacking our thoughts and behavior. Here are some prompts for your journal to start with: a. What are your triggers? What causes them? b.What do you dislike about yourself? Why? c. What was your childhood like? Negative or positive? Why? d. Do you lie to yourself? If so, when do you lie to yourself? Why? e. What emotions do you usually avoid? Why?
Journaling
6. Have a conversation with your inner child and give them a big bear hug. 7. Love your shadow self. 8. Find a Therapist or group therapy. Shadow work is a lifelong process that is only beneficial to our well beings. For more discussion on the topic, be sure to follow our facebook page.

e’ve all been there. As soon as you log into our virtual world, PING, PING! PING! The messages. The social notices. The group notices. Friends. Virtual families. Notecards. Maybe you’ve logged in just to get away from real-life pressures or a long day of work. We are conditioned to answer, be involved or respond to the needs and wants of others with urgency without giving ourselves a break. Although Second Life® is a social platform, there are ways to stay logged in and care for your mental and emotional well-being. You CAN be online and relax at the same time! Before feeling required to respond to instant messages, etc., ask yourself, “Am I giving myself the time I need before I read or respond to this? Have I given myself time to take care of my needs? If I haven’t, why not?” Although the proper definition of downtime implies no electronic devices, spending downtime online can look different for everyone based on what it means to you. But being inworld doesn’t have to be just for socializing. We all log on for many different reasons maybe as a form of mental diversion or maybe just to escape. We may love exploring different sims, decorating our homes or avatars, listening to music, or we are creators or builders, etc. There are a plethora of singular activities inworld to delve into that can help relieve the stresses of everyday real life. The only caveat is that we should apply temperance and have a proper balance between our virtual play and our real life. If you are interested in “tuning out” inworld, here are some suggestions and/or recommendations to exercise: 1. Turn on your unavailable status according to the viewer that you are using. If your viewer allows, write a gentle message in the unavailable text box so that friends, family, and acquaintances are aware that you are unavailable
2. Meditate. 3. Visit a voice-led meditation session at the Center for Mindful Learning or find a peaceful place on the grid and listen to music that makes you feel at peace. 4. Yoga. Take a yoga or Tai-Chi class on the grid. If you are able-bodied, roll out a mat and safely follow along at home. 5. Shopping. 6. Clean your inventory. 7. Self-Role Play. Put yourself in the shower or tub, maybe give yourself a facial.

o some, the concept of gender fluidity may appear to be a 21st-century fad that has risen in popularity amongst millennials and Gen Z-ers but actually, gender fluidity was never a new concept. Throughout many cultures around the world, it’s been considered the norm for millennia and centuries. Yet in other countries and societies, there are polarizing viewpoints of what it means to be gender fluid and how it fits into the social constructs of a society. There are Fa’afafines and Fa’afatamas within Samoan culture, Two-Spirit in Native North American Navajo culture, Muxes in Juchitán de Zaragoza, Mexico, Sekratas in Madagascar, and Hijras in South Asia (who were criminalized by British forces in 1871). To be genderfluid or non-binary is not choosing to be a “third gender” but to have a stance that gender fluidity is a spectrum. Each person that identifies as a genderfluid creates what that means for themselves.

I’ve known I was not exactly a part of the binary, and that I felt several different gender identities to varying degrees, since my childhood. I didn’t learn about the term “genderfluid” until much later, though. It was kind of a “eureka!” moment. Have you always felt comfortable exploring your fluidity of gender on Second Life®? I haven’t always felt comfortable with my fluidity in either life, but Second Life® gave me a blank canvas when I was ready to embrace myself. I expected a lot of backlash, but surprisingly I’ve gotten nothing but support in becoming my most authentic self.
