Dear Neville Firstly a big thanks for the magazine, I find it informative and a really handy guide especially when we are planning getaways with the boys at the club. Do you still print or is it purely online now? I prefer online but I do know that some of the guys (especially the older generation) still like reading actual magazines. You recently ran a poll on your Facebook page asking what we think of the new golf rules. I have mixed feelings on the changes; I feel that eliminating the double hit penalty on the same swing is a good move and that the new three minute search time will speed up play (which is very necessary). However I don’t like watching professional golfers putting with the flag in, it just seems wrong and I have seen statistics proving that you have more of a chance with the flag in. The other rule that irks me is the drop from knee height, although it’s not so much the rule but the fact that if you forget to drop it from knee height (as Rickie Fowler did at the WGC Mexico) and drop it from shoulder height as was previously the rule then you get penalised. They should make allowances for this as it’s actually to ones disadvantage to drop the ball from a greater height.

Thanks for writing in. We do still print a small quantity of magazines although our shift has been firmly to online. As to the new rules I think it is just a matter of time and adaption. I felt a bit sorry for Rickie but as a professional you need to be acutely aware of the rules and report an infringement as soon as you realise it, just like Rickie did. I see that the incident has led to him doing some humorous versions of the knee drop which I thought was good as sometimes you need to lighten the mood. Enjoy your golf and hopefully you and your mates can put together a golf tour to Mpumalanga with the aid of our special feature in this edition. Regards

Importance of a good setup by Eugene Schwartz
A
s golfers we always open to new suggestions and advice.
Do you spend time understanding the basic setup in the golf swing and what can go wrong in the swing if you don’t do it correctly? There are a lot of things to remember before starting the golf swing.
SWING FAULTS THAT CAN BE AVOIDED: Ball flights you can see if you aim right of the target. A fade, pull or push. You might think you have pushed the ball, but in fact it may have started on the line you aligned yourself.
I am going to go through the importance of good alignment and your weight distribution in the stance. There are a few swing faults that can creep in the golf swing if you align yourself incorrectly and your weight favours your toes. Pro golfers often practice with alignment sticks and choose a specific target as accuracy is obviously vital in setting themselves up for a birdie or eagle putt. STANCE and ALIGNMENT: At some stage you may have heard a golfer say over the top or chicken and that nasty word S_ _ _ K. Sometimes this can be avoided if you aim correctly and your weight is 50/50 between your feet. When aiming too far right it can cause you to redirect your swing path to get the ball going to your target.

tuition & instruction You can have a “chicken wing” in the swing, this can happen because you can’t extend your club to the intended target and you will swing left and get cramped on the impact position. The fade will happen, as you redirect your swing path you will keep your club face open and put side spin on the golf ball because you want to avoid pulling your shot. A simple fix is to use 2 alignment rods parallel to your target when you go to the range. The one is aligned at the target and the other is to align your body.
I always ask my students “what must go to the hole, your ball or your body”? Aim your clubface to your target and then your body parallel to your clubface. At first it will feel like you are aligned left of target, after a few range sessions you will see a change and your club will release to your target and you won’t have to redirect you swing path. I always ask the golfers to aim straight to target, then we can start identifying their natural ball flight and aim accordingly to that.
WEIGHT: There can be a number of swing faults that can happen if there is too much weight on your toes when addressing the ball: You can struggle to release your clubhead and you can also swing left causing a fade or a pull shot. Some golfers struggle to keep their balance through the golf swing. When taking the setup, start from your hips by pressing your bum back and your chest will tilt over, then bend your knees slightly. You should feel your weight in the middle or balls of your feet. In the top picture you can see that the knees are almost over the toes and in the bottom picture the knees are slightly bent. When taking your stance someone should not be able to push you over your feet. Next time you go practice try these basic setup positions and you will be one step closer to fading or pulling the ball less.

what makes this such a special tournament? The history, comraderie and ‘gees’ is what sets this apart from most other tournaments. There is no real pressure on being the best golfer, but rather having the most amount of fun, meeting new friends and rekindling old friendships from the past whilst playing a game of golf, having a cold beer or more and enjoying the live music, and this for the entire week. 8. This is one of the biggest amateur ournaments in the country, what are you’re biggest challenges during this week? Waking up on time. You generally get to bed around 1am and are back to put the coffee on and get things going before the next days golfers arrive at around 5am. There is again a very supportive Jock Committee that spends months prepping for the week and no stone gets left unturned, so generally there are no surprises during the week. As long as the greens are good, beers cold and showers hot the golfers have a great time over that week. Once you have played in one, you will definitely be back, no questions. 9. This is your 10th year as a PGA Professional, what do you enjoy most about the industry. I thoroughly enjoy the meeting of new people, getting time to chat to them and seeing the joy when they come off the course

and say, “Wow, we had a great time and will definitely be back.” The members of a golf club always come first. Do you agree with the phrase “The member is always right”? The members are the club’s greatest asset. Without them, the club will cease to exist so they must be looked after, and serious concerns addressed. While I might not be in full agreement with “the member is always right”, I do believe that “the member is never wrong.” Slow play is one of the biggest problems in golf today, how do you manage slow play at Mbombela Golf Club? Slow play generally stems from undisciplined golfers. What I mean here is it is covered in the rule book, so should be adhered to in the same way as the other rules. I am lucky here in that our members understand the etiquette of the game and that slow play is frowned upon so generally sort each other out. Our caddies also assist slower playing groups in keeping up with the pace of play. Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life? Yes, the golf industry is time consuming and even more so during the holiday season, when numerous golfers descend on the facility to come enjoy a game. I am lucky to have a supportive wife, who comes from the hospitality sector and understands the demands from this industry. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Luckily the Kruger National Park is just 30min down the road for me, so a night or two in the park with the family is a great way to unwind and relax. Do you still get time to play? From time to time depending on what is happening at the club. I try to play three times a month and strive to make it with different members of the club.

Mpumalanga road trip
W
hen you set off to visit the Mpumalanga Province it is always with a sense of excitement, “the place where the sun rises” as it means in Xhosa borders Swaziland and Mozambique and is divided into two distinct regions by the Drakensberg escarpment. A westerly half called the Highveld and an easterly area known as the Lowveld.
There are many more golf courses in the area other than the seven mentioned above but our five day window period had us on our toes and we selected these for the variety that they offer. I would strongly recommend a golf tour taking in at least four of the above combined with either a visit to the Kruger National Park or a spot of Tiger fishing in the Komati River.
The Lowveld is subtropical, due to its latitude and proximity to the warm Indian Ocean. The Highveld is comparatively much cooler, due to its altitude of 2300 m to 1700 m above sea level. Over a period of five days we travelled to the Highveld to visit Highland Gate Golf & Trout Estate just outside the small town of Dullstroom. We then headed down to the Lowveld and visited Sabi River Sun, White River Country Club, Mbombela Golf Club, Malelane Golf Club, Leopard Creek and Kambaku Golf Club in Komatipoort.
You will not find an experience like this anywhere else in the world and with the Lalapalm Competition coming up at Malelane Golf Club between the 17th and 20th of April, the Big Easter Festival at White River Country Club between the 17th and 21st of April and the Jock of the Bushveld Amateur Tournament at Mbombela Golf Club between the 28th April and the 5th May you would be well advised to read this feature, book your accommodation, pack your clubs and then head east…

I
A Brief History of “The Jock”
n 1967 J.J. Van Rensburg and Rip Riphagen created a new topic of conversation in the pub at the Nelspruit Gold Club - a place where most bright ideas originate. Lively discussion ensued amongst the “manne” for many a memorable evening with major contributions from Christo Basson and Ken Myers and the concept of Jock was born. The idea was taken to Committee where it was met with very mixed feelings, however, months of pub discussions had armed the proponents of Jock with very persuasive arguments and Jock’s birth became official. The first jock was played from Thursday to Sunday and consisted of two 18-hole competitions each day with the 36-hole Lowveld Open on the Sunday. In 1969 Jock was extended to include Wednesday. It was not unusual in those early jocks for players to be called to the tee for the afternoon competition while still battling up the 18th hole of the morning round. In 1973 the tournament was changed to its present format, including the Tuesdays from 1977 and the Monday from 1981. A feature of the first Jock was the presence of Bobby Locke who entertained us with his ukulele until 4.00am on Sunday morning then curled up in the lounge and went to sleep. He was

awakened for his tee off time but informed Ken Myers that he required some “hair of the dog”. Old baggy pants duly retired to the pub for a “few” gins after which the maestro recorded a 141 gross for the day and Ken retired to bed - for the day! Jock has not only survived since those early days, indeed it has prospered and since 1969 the tournament has been oversubscribed each year. Currently approximately 2 000 rounds of golf are played over the week by 800 competitors and it is reputed to be the largest amateur tournament of its kind. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then it speaks volumes that even with the advent of the “Barberton Daisy” the “Lalapalm” and numerous other similar tournaments, the Jock retains its reputation for being the best and the Jock plaque the most sought after trophy in amateur golf. It is not just a golf tournament but a meeting place where friendships are made and renewed some panning the entire 52 years. This year Jock comes of age and we trust you will find your tournament as enjoyable as those you have attended in the past. We look forward to hosting you at the club for the week, sharing the old and new stories and some cold beers together.

The Malelane Golf Club
M
alelane is a country-style nine-hole golf club with 18 tees that is situated at the front door of the Kruger National Park. The Kruger Park Malelane gate is a mere kilometre away from the golf course.
Conceptualized in 1963, construction began in 1967 and the first golf ball was teed-up on 15 March 1969. TSB Sugar constructed the main building and helped towards the development of the course. The highlight of the opening was to host Gary Player. Today TSB now known as RCL still support the club, but most of the funds come from the members and visitors playing fees. It is unique and challenging yet friendly. A course that makes you feel you’re at home. It’s visually attractive and memorable once played. It has an abundance of fauna and flora and the birdlife is prolific.

One of the major events in the history of the club is the much sought after Lalapalm Competition. A three-day competition spread over four days allows visitors the opportunity to relax and spend time game viewing in the Southern region of the Kruger National Park. It is always played just prior to the Easter Weekend holidays and this year it will be hosted from the 17th to 20th April.
Several accommodation opportunities within the area can be recommended and one of those that stand out is Kruger View Chalets which is nestled on the Crocodile River (the Kruger National Park is on the other side of the river). INTRODUCES SUPERLIGHT D7 DRIVER AND WOOD LINE Fairway Woods and Hybrid Wilson Staff D7 fairway woods and hybrid offer a dramatic change to previous distance versions, starting with a head shape inspired by input from Wilson Tour players. The new lightweight crown construction features thin-cast pockets which reduces five grams of weight and promotes the superlight design. “By removing excessive weight and changing the structure of the clubs, we see that the D7 woods and hybrids make a significant gain in performance,” said Jon. “As with the D7 driver, the D7 fairways and hybrid can be swung faster with the same effort to give golfers the desired distance.”
The new D7 line with RE-AKT Technology delivers faster club head speed for longer distances. Wilson Golf officially launched the new D7 driver along with the line of D7 woods and hybrids for the 2019 season. Highlighted by its superlight design, the D7 driver, woods and hybrids provides golfers with greater ball speeds for longer distances, and ultimate playability when attacking the green. With a club head weight of just 192 grams, the Wilson Staff D7 driver features RE-AKT Technology plus a combination of superlight design and reactive face technology to deliver faster club head speeds and ball speeds for longer distances off the tee.
A Carpenter Custom 455 Stainless Steel face insert provides a thin, hot face, increasing both feel and distance. The D7 fairway wood is available in three loft options – 15˚ (3-wood); 18˚ (5-wood); and 21˚ (7-wood) with the same UST-Mamiya Helium Series shaft and Wilson Staff MicroLite Lamkin grip as used on the driver. Left hand models are available in 15° and 18° loft options. The D7 hybrid is available in four loft options (19˚, 22˚, 25˚ and 28˚) with the UST-Mamiya Recoil shaft in A-, R- and S- flexes at 65 grams. The grip is the Wilson Staff classic Lamkin Crossline pattern grip. Left handed versions are available in 19°, 22˚ and 25° loft options. UNVEILS D7 IRONS WITH RE-AKT TECHNOLOGY The new line of irons features progressive power holes to provide longer distances and maximum feel. Combining the aesthetics from the award-winning FG Tour V6 and C300 irons with ground-breaking game improvement technology, the new D7 line gives golfers greater distance and a more consistent performance during each round on the course. With the “D” in D7 standing for distance, the new line of irons integrates Wilson’s RE-AKT technology to provide golfers power where it is needed most. Featuring three rows of Power Holes in the long irons (4-7) and Wilson’s thinnest club face ever, the D7 irons ensure golfers get maximum distance due to the greater responsiveness off the club face. “The D7 line is our latest installment of game improvement irons that will give golfers increased distances on the longer irons and precision with the shorter clubs,” said Jon Pergande, Manager, of Wilson Golf Club Innovation. “Our RE-AKT technology and ultra-thin, responsive club face increases ball speeds to help produce maximum distances, while the shorter clubs give golfers a greater feel and more distance control.” With fewer Power Holes than the longer irons and optimized weighting, the shorter D7 irons are ideal for golfers seeking maximum feel and precise distance control when approaching the green. The new design aesthetics of the club face include straighter lines, a cleaner topline and improved weighting. The irons are outfitted with Recoil Series Graphite shafts, available in A, R and S flexes at 65 grams. KBS Tour 80 Steel shafts are also available in R and S flexes.

Multiply Titans Cricket Captain 1. Where were you born and which schools did you attend? I was born in a small town called Pniel, just between Stellenbosch and Franschoek. I went to Pniel Primary and Stellenbosch High. 2. Do you come from a sporting family? Very much so, my dad played cricket and rugby and so did my brother. The town I came from is sports mad, which abviously helped as we played basically all types of sports every day in the streets. 3. Who was your biggest influence in your cricket career? Probably my dad as he spent loads of time and money on my development from a young age. 4. You made your debut for Boland in 2000, do you still remember the game? Yes I do, it was against the touring New Zealand team back then. 5. With such an illustrious career over 19 years, what stands out as your highlight, or highlights. I love playing cricket and love testing myself at this age, on and off the field. What is your opinion of 20/20 cricket, do you think that it’s bad for the longer format like 4 & 5 day cricket ? Not at all, I think it’s helping the players skills to improve. And its drawing different crowds to the cricket, but 4-day and test cricket is still the purest form of the game. 8. What was your reaction when you heard AB de Villiers recently retired ? I totally understand why, when you have a young family, it is tough to be away from home for long periods. Family is a lot more important than anything else in the world. 9. I am an ambassador for The Els Club Copperleaf, but at Serengeti I just have a very good friend in Mark Renwick that let’s me play there all the time. At Copperleaf Jaun Geyser is so good to me, when ever I have time, I can just pop in and play. The course is in pristine condition all the time!!! The service is immaculate from the offices to the green keepers. It just shows why the course is so highly rated.

They are all competitive, and they hate losing. Have you had any embarrassing moments whilst playing golf? Of course, I do shank the odd one now and then. Which club do you use the most? Besides my putter probably my lob wedge. Do you walk or take a cart? Cart. Your favourite golfer would be? Tiger Woods. Have you ever had a hole-in-one? Yes I’ve had 2. Memorable 112th SA Amateur victory for Nienaber
F
or third successive year, the South African flag was raised at the South African Amateur Championship after South Africa’s top ranked Wilco Nienaber won the country’s most coveted amateur title last month. In a gripping final round then went the distance at King David Mowbray GC, the world number 29 was ruthlessly tested by 16-yearold Jordan Duminy in the 36-hole final. The 2018 Amateur Championship qualifier winner was undoubtedly the favourite going into the final day, but unheralded Duminy showed maturity beyond his years to knock out two top Irish golfers to reach the final and he never backed off in the last clash. On the back foot for most of the final, an

uncharacteristic fist-pump after he holed a par-putt at the 36th hole to beat Duminy 1-up, signalled Nienaber’s joy and relief at achieving a lifelong dream. “It is such an honour for me to lift this trophy,” he said. “At the start of the week I said that I rated this championship higher than the runner-up finish in the Brabazon Trophy or winning the qualifier at the Amateur Championship last year. It’s been a dream for many years and I am overjoyed that I finally achieved it.” In addition to the amateur world golf ranking points he earn with this victory, Nienaber will get another stab at the Freddie Tait Trophy with a start in the South African Open Championship later this year.

Steady Schaper seals SA Stroke Play victory Despite coming under intense pressure from fellow GolfRSA National Squad member Deon Germishuys down the closing holes, Schaper was the coolest man on the 18th green as closed out victory on a 19-under 269 aggregate. “I was still a little disappointed after I got knocked out at the SA Amateur last week, but this sure makes up for it,” said Schaper, who rose to second in the GolfRSA Open Amateur rankings following his winning performance in Stellenbosch.

Almost from the time he hit his first shots as a two-year-old with a plastic set of clubs at San Lameer CC, Jayden Schaper has been a grinder. A no frills, no fuss guy who was taught that good old fashioned hard work and an unflappable self-belief gets you the rewards. With a trophy cabinet at home already bursting, it came as no surprise when the 17-year-old Benoni golfer grinded out a one-shot victory in the South African Stroke Play Championship. Schaper’s workmanlike route around De Zalze GC for rounds of 67 and a joint course record 63 earned him the 36-hole lead on 14-under-par. A steady third round 70 helped him to retain his five stroke overnight lead and South Africa’s top ranked junior pulled it through with a three-under-par 69 in the final round.

Lewthwaite’s long wait ends with play-off glory
L
eján Lewthwaite stepped up to the Sunshine Ladies Tour winner’s circle at the South African Women’s Masters with a dramatic play-off victory over young GolfRSA amateur Kajal Mistry at San Lameer CC last month.
But it would be the true masterstroke of Lewthwaite that would have the final say as she rolled a monster putt straight into the hole for a birdie three. Mistry’s makeable birdie came up short and the title duly went to Lewthwaite.
The pair ended three rounds tied on one-under 215, with Lewthwaite closing with a superb five-under 67 after opening efforts of 75 and 73. Mistry, meanwhile, signed for a one-under 71 to go with her earlier rounds of 75 and 69.
The 28-year-old Lewthwaite had been knocking on the door the last few weeks with third at the Canon Sunshine Ladies Tour Open at the beginning of February, before a second place at the Dimension Data Ladies Pro-Am the following week in George.
The duo crossed irons as they headed back to the short par four 18th for a sudden death play-off. The 18-year-old Mistry went first and split the fairway, while Lewthwaite found a decent lie in the rough on the right.
“A couple people were saying 3-2-1 this week because I was third at Irene, second at DiData… So I’m happy to complete that sequence,” Lewthwaite said.
Lewthwaite was first to hit her approach, which nested near the back of the green some 35 feet from the pin and it was advantage Mistry, who stuck her second to 12 feet.

For Mistry, though, the agony of defeat was clear for all to see, but Lewthwaite believes the youngster is destined for a long career in the game. “Kajal is a fantastic player,” said Lewthwaite. “She’s going to do so well in the future.”

He was reputed at the time to have the biggest wardrobe of all professional golfers. He represented the United States on 5 Ryder Cup teams and was known for his patriotic passion for the event, once saying of his European opponents, “On paper, they should be caddying for us.” He was a favorite of photographers because of his ivy caps and patterned pants, which were a cross between plus fours and knickerbockers a throwback to the once-commonplace golfing “uniform.” He won the PGA Championship in1989 and the U.S. Open in 1991 and 1999.
