The show must go on! Jason Dufner summed it up after losing in a play off to first time major winner, Keegan Bradley “the show must go on”. New names, new clubs, new courses! Even Tiger Woods seems to be heading off the radar into the Ernie Els galaxy. I wonder if this abyss has space for legendary Springbok Captain, John Smit? Many feel that he should be there already! Hold on I say, don’t write off the legends remember Nicklaus won the masters in ’86 and Tom Watson came so close, two years ago at the Open! Will we win another World Cup? Will Tiger win another major? These questions will be answered in due course, but I am sure looking forward to watching the “Bokke”! Perhaps you will be reading this magazine in between games, if so take note of the visit to the Cape West Coast, such an amazing place that Louis & Neville took out full memberships at Langebaan Country Estate vowing to visit there as often as possible! Must be special!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). If your letter is published you will win a fantastic PGA voucher worth R500 to be redeemed with any registered PGA Pro, for equipment or golf lessons
WINNING LETTER Hi Neville & team, WOW! What a great mag this month. I love getting your magazine when taking my sons to the Mount Edgecombe driving range on a Saturday. I love reading where you guys have been and your write ups are interesting and believe me it really helps considering I have a husband, who is a huge golf freak, and it looks like our 12 and 6 year old boys are following in the same direction, so when planning our holidays your magazine really comes in handy! The kids really love checking out spot the difference, and they actually have arguments on who is right and who is wrong. Until they go to page 96 and then all hell breaks loose as our 6 year old thinks he knows everything, I really feel sorry for his sports coach one day, as he will be telling him what to do.
My main reason though for this letter is to just say “congratulations” on your Golfing Gal Toets van der Westhuizen! Gee it’s really great seeing an older and down to earth Golfing Gal in your issue. I must say that I was so impressed to see that it’s not just young lasses playing golf out there but also fit middle aged ladies, out there having a ball! The pictures just say it all, she loves the game! Once again, thanks for such a great magazine and I look forward to seeing more Golfing Gals in the Toets mold in your future issues. Toets you get my vote! Regards Laura
Dear Laura I am delighted to hear that you like the magazine and that you use it to plan your holidays as this is the purpose of the visits that we do. We try and ensure that we offer the readers an insight to a particular area with regards to golf and the other activities that a family can do whilst there. We find that the kid’s pages are extremely popular (not only with our younger readers) and as with your kids there are often heated debates over the answers. Toets van der Westhuizen has proven to be a popular choice as we have had many votes for her already. Golfing Gals has and always will be about lady golfers young and old who are passionate about the game! I can not ascertain from your letter whether you are a golfer or not but perhaps the R500 PGA voucher that you will receive for this winning letter will encourage you to start playing or else help you to continue enjoying the game! Regards
Congratulations to Laura - you have won a PGA voucher worth R500! September/October 2011

Michelle Wie: Turning pro as a teen was the right decision Michelle Wie, believe it or not is still only 21 years of age and she has already been a professional golfer for six years, or more than one-quarter of her life. That's also why Wie has some thoughts on the merit of teen golfers turning pro, and she says each case is different. Wie said she and her parents, B.J. and Bo, held long discussions before deciding she should turn pro in 2005, just before her 16th birthday. She continued to play in pro tournaments both men's and women's - but because the LPGA Tour's minimum age is 18, she did not become a full-time member until she went through fall qualifying in 2008. A year ago, another U.S. teen golf sensation, Alexis Thompson, turned pro at age 15. "It's a personal choice," Wie said. "It's very hard for someone else to judge that decision." 6
Turning pro changes your life, Wie said, which was one reason she was so committed to attending university. She's now on a break from her studies at Stanford, but expects to finish up by next spring with a major in communications. Wie said her parents would be in Montreal as she tries to defend the Canadian Open title she won last year at the St. Charles Country Club in Winnipeg, just as they have been on-site for all her tournaments as a pro. She may be 21, twice the winner of LPGA Tour events and, thanks to lucrative sponsorship agreements and more than $2 million US in career earnings, set for life financially, but she said she still liked having her mother and father around as part of her support group. Travelling the pro golf world on her own could wait for a few more years, Wie said. After all, she's still just 21.

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE NEWS CLIP
Dave Pelz, recognized as one of the world's greatest short-game coaches, believes that along with Keegan Bradley, belly putters were the big winners at the 93rd US PGA Championship. Bradley, a PGA Tour rookie graduate of the Hooters and Nationwide Tours, made history with his belly putter at the Atlanta Athletic Club. He was the first-ever winner of a major to use an non-traditional long putter, in his case a belly putter as opposed the longer broomstick putter Adam Scott had used to win the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in the week before the PGA. And Pelz, who runs six resort-based short game schools across the United States, believes the dramatic TV coverage and Bradley's valiant fight back and his eventual three-hole play-off victory over the faltering Jason Dufner, will create an enormous amount of interest in long putters Pelz, who has worked with some of the game's greatest professional including short game king Phil Mickelson, says the stance forced upon bellyputter users, whether they be top-rank professionals or weekend hackers, prevents them from committing the "two cardinal sins" of putting. "When you anchor the shaft in your tummy, and then you swing the putter, you can not break your wrists," says Pelz in ruling out what is probably the biggest putting transgression a golfer can make. Problem number one solved. The next biggest mistake golfers make during the putting stroke is rotating their forearms which, says Pelz, comes from moving the torso during the swing instead of the arms. Belly putters also prevent that happening, he points out. Forearm rolling, he says, putts the ball on the wrong path while wrist-breaking affects touch and makes stroking the ball the right distance difficult to achieve. September/October 2011

AN OUNCE OF QUALITY SUNSCREEN PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE Karl Gruber M.D. Golfers have more sun exposure than most other sports enthusiasts, and as such they need to understand the damage caused by sun exposure and how to prevent it.
E
veryone is familiar with the SPF system which rates the level of UVB or sunburn protection, However people remain unfamiliar with the dangers posed by UVA rays. They are responsible for solar aging and the majority of sun induced melanomas. The process of solar aging involves chronic long term exposure to micro-doses of UVA light. UVA exposure produces damage over years, by inducing a multitude of tiny “scars”; in which one, etched over another, over time cause the visible wrinkle. Ninety percent of the skin in composed of the thick, tough collagen which lies directly beneath the surface epidermis. It is the interaction of UVA rays on the collagen that leads to aged skin. One would expect tough collagen to be unaffected directly by the low energy UVA rays. However, studies conducted by dermatologist Dr. John Voorhees, discovered that UVA rays alter the way new collagen is laid down and old collagen is broken down. Specifically Voorhees determined that exposure to UVA rays turns on genes resulting in the production of enzymes that promote collagen breakdown, while at the same time turning on different genes that inhibit new collagen formation. The result is that one damages collagen each and every time one is exposed to UVA rays. One can see the cumulative effect of this damage in U.S. truckers versus English truckers. The U.S. truckers have more pronounced solar aging on the left side of the face versus the right side for the English who drive on the other side of the road. Even more worrisome than solar aging it the fact that UVA exposure is now strongly linked to sun induced melanoma. Long wavelength UVA rays interact with melanin containing melanocytes producing oxidative byproducts which lead to melanoma induction. The graph below is worrisome. It shows that it is possible to wear a sunscreen that has great UVB or sunburn protection, but little in the way of long wavelength (greater than 350nm) UVA protection. 8
This will allow someone to stay out in the sun for hours without getting burned, but all the time “cooking” themselves with melanoma inducing UVA rays. Perhaps it is no coincident that the incidence of melanoma has exploded at the same time there has been ever more pervasive sunscreen use. The key is to know a product’s Critical Wavelength® value. This value tells a consumer how far out a sunscreen’s protective umbrella extends across the UVB/UVA spectrum. This rating system has recently been adopted by the U.S. FDA as the standard for making any broad spectrum, anti-aging, or skin cancer prevention claim. It is important to know this value. So what does all this mean to golfers, or anyone spending long hours enjoying the outdoors? Well if you don’t want your face to look like a worn out saddle get proactive: 1. Use not just a high SPF sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher), but one with a known level of UVA protection. Critical Wavelength® is the gold standard rating the level of UVA protection. This Critical Wavelength® value needs to be over 370nm. All LUCA Sunscreen products display a Critical Wavelength® value. 2. Apply sunscreen to dry skin before going outside. Application to wet or sweaty skin markedly reduces effectiveness. 3. Use sun protective clothing, broad brimmed hats and shirts. 4. Reapply sunscreen every two hours to dry skin. Most people apply less than half of that is recommended. 5. Use common sense and avoid direct sun exposure when practical. UVB rays or sunburning rays are most intense in the midday, during the summertime, but UVA rays remain constant all day and all year long. The incidence of skin cancers including deadly melanoma is increasing at epidemic proportions but being proactive, particularly at a young age might just save your life, and keep you looking younger, longer.

Majors show SA, world golf in good shape! Mike Green
The major championships of 2011 delivered four surprising champions, but looking back on them, perhaps two were less surprising than the others. Charl Schwartzel’s triumph in the Masters at Augusta National was – for South Africans and European Tour followers – vindication of years of belief in his abilities, and it was one not dismissed as a ‘one-hit wonder’ as Louis Oosthuizen’s unfairly was after he won last year’s Open. And Rory McIlroy’s US Open victory procession was hailed as the arrival of a superstar. While he didn’t conquer the world immediately thereafter, his maiden major victory certainly appears to have heralded golf ’s next big thing. Darren Clarke’s Open Championship win was one for the blokes of the world of golf. Had Miguel Angel Jimenez won, it’s possible it would have been equally well received. But Clarke has evolved into one of golf ’s good guys with a healthy perspective on many of the problems facing the game and its stars.

make par after par from the third hole onwards in his final round while the title seemed destined to go to someone else. And then he unleashed those final four birdies in succession, and roars could be heard through quiet neighbourhoods throughout the country. Interestingly, of the players to make the cut in all four majors, Schwartzel was a combined 14-under-par, by far the best from that group. For other South Africans – including a handful of major winners in Oosthuizen, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen and Trevor Immelman – it wasn’t such a great year. Oosthuizen had a decent run in the US Open with a share of ninth, but that and his share of 54th when he attempted a defence of the Open title were bracketed by a pair of missed cuts at the Masters and the PGA. In a generally disappointing year, Els had to settle for a single finish in the money in majors as he tied for 47th in the Masters and missed the cuts in the rest. Goosen withdrew with injury from the PGA and the Open, missed the cut at the Masters and Christo Greyling – not a Sunshine Tour member, got a share of 23rd in the event he has won twice, but a South African resident in the US – fared well in the US Open with a share of 68th. or years now we have been talking about visiting the Cape West Coast. Rumours of abundant crayfish, vast unspoilt beaches and great golf courses have naturally had us interested. So for this edition we decided to travel down to Cape Town and make the 130 kilometer trip to Langebaan where we would spend two weeks verifying these stories. The West Coast is vast so we narrowed our stay to the West Coast Peninsula which encompasses Langebaan, Vredenburg, St. Helena Bay, Hopefield, Paternoster and Saldahna. This turned out to be one of our best trips as we were bowled over by the friendliness of the locals, the stark beauty of the area, the delicious seafood, the surrounding golf courses and so much more‌.. I really can not put into words how special this area is (it possesses an almost mystical aura) and would highly recommend that you grab your clubs and go West in a hurry! Courses in the area are:

Successful Golf Course Development Brought to us by KPMG’s Golf Advisory Practice
Golf course design
How to create a course that will stand out from the crowd and add value to a development.
I
n recent times golf has become the chief amenity for luxury communities, placing the golf course architect right at the heart of new residential and resort facilities worldwide. In most cases, the architect must artfully weave course design into the residential component of a development. It pays to hire a golf course architect or designer as early as possible, preferably in the first stages of the project. The architect’s advice on site selection and its cost estimating and co-ordination with other project consultants could save the developer time and money overall. The architect can help guide the project from start to completion. While the design process varies greatly from project to project, a basic plan of action generally applies: 32
Phase 1: Site analysis This is the first phase of every design. The golf course architect will carefully examine the site, initially on paper and then by visiting the property to assess its opportunities and constraints. An architect will ask himself numerous questions: • Which areas of the site are best suited for golf? • Which areas are best suited for uses other than golf? • Where are the best views – and the poorest? • Which slopes (if any) are too extreme for golf? • What is the character of the site’s existing vegetation?

These questions and many more help an architect to design the course as naturally and efficiently as possible. It’s at this stage that an architect will likely prepare several routing concepts for review by the owners and the master planning team. This initial phase typically takes up to 30 days, sometimes more.
Once everyone agrees on a final land plan, the architect moves on to the preliminary grading/contouring of the golf course. The preliminary contours are used to help define how much earth will need to be moved, help define how the golf course will work from a construction standpoint, help define construction costs and budgets, and allow the architect and owner to understand how the golf course will work and function as it relates to the overall project.
Phase 2: Preliminary design
The particular style of the golf course (parkland,

links, desert, etc) will start to become more refined in this stage. The chosen style can be further influenced by the contours of the land. If the site is flat, with poor vegetation, will they move a lot of earth to create interest? If the site is naturally undulating, will they do less earthmoving and try to work with what nature has provided? There are many combinations and possibilities, but answering questions like these will help the architect shape the character of the golf course they intend to design.
III.
A final grading/contour plan and a cut and fill plan showing the amount of earthmoving to be undertaken, hole by hole
IV.
A grassing plan showing the limits of the turf, and taking in fairways, roughs, tees and greens
V.
A bunker study plan depicting the style and philosophy of the bunkers chosen
VI.
A conceptual golf course drainage plan (to be reviewed and approved by the owner’s engineer)
Phase 3: Strategic design The next phase is designing the final grading/contour plans. Now the architect can plan the strategy of each hole on the course, determining how each hole should be played. The architect’s goal is to create the greatest possible variety in the types of golf shots the course demands – and similar variety in terms of the hazards, the aesthetics of the course etc. What’s paramount is that the architect makes each hole challenging and interesting for the better golfer, yet playable and enjoyable for the higherhandicap player too. This stage typically takes 60 to 120 days, and it’s now that the architect will prepare the following plans: I.
A strategy plan, which should include the proposed location of the cart paths and provide details for staking the golf course
II.
A clearing plan, showing the extent of clearance of trees and other vegetation

VII. A conceptual landscape plan showing the proposed limits of landscaping within the golf course corridor VIII. An irrigation plan, prepared by a third party but supplemental to the designer’s plans and made a part of the overall plans for bidding purposes. In addition, the designer should provide construction specifications and details. These define the acceptable methods and standards required in building the golf course. These specifications may vary depending on the construction budget or site condition. The designer will also consult with all the other consultants involved in the project on matters relating to the letting of contracts and the soliciting and review of price bids. They should also assist the owner in developing a realistic construction schedule for the course. The designer will prepare a spreadsheet comparing each bidding

contractor’s unit costs, to identify where any major cost disparities exist.
Phase 4: Construction Depending on the depth of personnel at the design firm, the lead designer or a design associate will be assigned to the project to work with all the owner’s consultants throughout the construction process. This designated designer will attend regular planning meetings and visit the golf course when necessary during construction, to review the contractor’s work and their adherence to the designer’s plan documents. Typically, an architect or designer will have no responsibility to prepare plans, specifications or drawings for the golf course clubhouse, half-way house or adjacent real estate structures incidental to the golf course. Often, though, a designer will advise on the conceptual location of such facilities in relation to the golf course.

Good quality turf is easier and less expensive to grow and maintain in these conditions. Quality turf can be achieved on just about any site using proper construction and agromitic practices, but it may be more costly to do so. Do I need a championship course? This depends entirely upon the developer’s needs, the local or regional market demand, and the property’s characteristics. How long will the design process take? Typically it should take between three and six months, assuming all topographic and property boundary information is available for use. The construction and grow-in phases vary in length, depending on the region and climate.
The key questions What kind of land is best for a golf course? Gently rolling terrain that requires minimal earthmoving is best. You ideally want nice vegetation and well-drained, sandy soils with plentiful good water.

Fichardt wins Vodacom event in wild finish Darren Fichardt was comfortably ensconced in the clubhouse on Friday as he won the R540,000 Vodacom Origins of Golf event at the Wild Coast Sun Country Club. “That’s the biggest margin I have ever overcome to win a tournament,” said Fichardt of his 11th victory on the Sunshine Tour, on the 5,807-metre layout where he won the 2009 Nashua Masters. Fichardt’s bogey-free 64 included a homeward nine of five-under-par 30, which featured an eagle three on the 441-metre 12th, and three birdies. “When I reached the turn,” said Fichardt, “Jean had already reached eight-under-par, but I looked at the leaderboard, and I was 17th. So I thought I’d give it a good go and see if I could get into the top 10.” “I’ve been hitting the ball well since my return from my shoulder injury,” he said. “I have made a few little swing changes to get rid of bad habits I’d developed with the injuries, and, when I changed to a mallet-type putter, things started going well.”

GOLFING DESTINATIONS - GAUTENG NEWS CLIP
Holmes to have brain surgery, ruled out for three months J.B. Holmes will be sidelined for three months while recovering from brain surgery, the PGA Tour said last month. The long-hitting Holmes, a double winner on the U.S. circuit, had been experiencing vertigo-like symptoms since the Players Championship in May. He has since been diagnosed with Chiari malformations, structural defects in the part of the brain which controls balance, and will undergo surgery at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital in the beginning of September. "It's just such a relief to know that there's a name for what I've been going through these past few months and that I have a good chance of getting back to golf and to my regular life," Holmes said. "This is a relatively low-risk surgery and only takes about an hour and a half. Best of all, there's a very high success rate in fixing the condition." Holmes recorded four top-10s in his first 10 PGA Tour starts this season before his form sharply declined after the Players Championship. In his last three appearances, the 29-year-old has missed two cuts and withdrew after the opening round of the PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club, citing illness.

Busy Spring in Mossel Bay
Golf is the best reason to come to Mossel Bay in September and October - but, of course, it’s not the only reason. “It’s spring, and, even though we’ve had fabulous weather all winter, it’s a time when everyone’s motivated to get out and explore and enjoy the region,” said Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm. She said that a number of sporting events feature on the town’s spring-time calendar. “This year will see the first Mossel Bay Triathlon (11 September), which will mark the first time in 12 years that an Olympic distance Triathlon will take place in the Southern Cape. “We’ll also have our annual running of the Petro SA Marathon on the 3rd of September, and the Honey Trail - a thee-day mountain bike race from Mossel Bay to Plettenberg Bay - gets under way on the 9th of September. “Then in October, we have the first edition of a very unusual mountain biking day at Mossel Bay’s only winery: the Jakkalsvlei Mountain Bike Challenge, which will offer 10, 30, and 55 kilometre courses that will feature the vineyards of the Jakkalsvlei Private Cellar in the Herbertsdale area.” But, said Ms. Holm, arts and culture need never take a back seat to sport in Mossel Bay. “Our Annual Kraak-i-Mossel Festival takes place from the 9th to the 11th of September, and once again promises to be a feast of fun, food, sport and 54
entertainment at The Point Caravan Park, in the historic Point Area, just below the Cape St Blaize Lighthouse,” she said. “And then one of the social highlights of the year is our annual Miss Garden Route & Klein Karoo Pageant - a community project and charity event that aims to combat the plight of battered women and children in the Southern Cape, and which will feature a glittering gala evening at the Garden Route Casino on the 1st of October.” Naturally, she said, none of this should detract from Mossel Bay’s many permanent attractions. “Mossel Bay has become known as the Do Stuff Destination because there are that many attractions in the area - with everything from whale and dolphin watching, to angling, 4x4 routes, hiking and adrenalin adventures. “And Mossel Bay is totally geared towards families, too!” she said. Events that take place in Mossel Bay are featured on the town’s daily calendar www.visitmosselbay.co.za/calendar and more information is available from Mossel Bay Tourism, which is open daily (including Saturdays and Sundays) on the corner of Church and Market Streets, in the CBD. GOLFING DESTINATIONS – GARDEN ROUTE
A Couple of reasons to Visit Knysna Knysna is one of the Garden Route’s best known travel destinations and was recently named as one of the Top 100 Destinations in the World and one of the Top 25 in Africa in the Trip Advisor Travellers’ Choice Destinations Awards. Here are some of the reasons why this destination is a world favourite: 1. Perfect weather all year round Whatever the season, Knysna stays green. Its warm, temperate climate makes it the perfect all-yearround destination. The mild winters on the Garden Route, from May to August, ensure sunny and beautiful wind-still days and are often referred to as the “secret season”. In fact, Knysna has a phantom autumn – it is certainly not a real one, but we have nothing else to call it. The forests do not loose its leaves, people don’t hide indoors and children aren’t dressed like overweight sleeping bags with limbs. Truth be told, day-time temperatures rival a balmy European summer, with an average winter temperature around 19ºC. 2. A Natural Paradise In Knysna, nature quite literally knocks on your front door. The town nestles between the impressive Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean, with the world-renowned forests encircling it like a protective mantle. This exceptional nature’s playground of beaches, lakes, mountains, forests and rivers offers an unforgettable holiday. Whether you’re an adventurous type or simply like it lolling around in the sun, Knysna has it all.
The Knysna Golf course might not have the views of its luxurious neighbours, but is a testing challenge among water hazards and tree-lined fairways, close to the Knysna estuary. 4. Last, but certainly not least, our beer and our oysters! Mitchell’s Brewery opened 25 years ago in Knysna and is arguably the leading micro brewery in South Africa. Whether it’s Bosun’s Biiter, Forester’s Draught, Raven Stout, Ninety Shilling Ale or the new Mitchell’s Gold, the “beer that made Knysna famous” is unmistakable. Oysters and Knysna are synonymous. The earliest records we have of the consumption and marketing of oysters in Knysna town are in newspaper cuttings of 1896.
3. Did someone say golf? Knysna is one of South Africa’s top golfing destinations and boasts some world class golf courses. Pezula Championship Golf Course adjacent to Pezula Resort Hotel & Spa is a sweeping spectacle of fairways and greens rolling through the pristine Southern Cape landscape. Keeping your head down at Simola Golf Estate can be a challenge; simply because the views around the course are awe-inspiring, and with this, it is clear to see why Simola takes its place as one of South Africa's premier golfing destinations. 58
The cultivated Knysna Oyster is famous for its fresh, nutty taste – unique to oysters in this area. Of course the wild coastal oyster, more salty in taste - is ever popular and also readily available at local eateries. During July the annual Knysna Oyster Festival draws thousands to celebrate the little mollusc, and more than 200 000 oysters are devoured in 10 days! Just arrive, the rest comes naturally So there you have it, a couple of wonderful reasons why you should base yourselves in Knysna on South Africa’s famous Garden Route.

Burger comes out on top in Orkney Hendrik Burger of Free State & Northern Cape won the North West Mid-Amateur Open in August with a two round total of 143 (1 under par) at Orkney GC. Conditions started out icey but warmed up over the day which lead to slightly better scores in the afternoon when compared to the morning scores. For David Muller, of Central Gauteng, this wasn't the case however as he lead after the morning round with a 2 under score of 70 (one of only two scores under par in the morning). In the afternoon Muller shot 76 which was good enough for second place. South African National Mid-Amateur player, Hugo Delport, recorded the only other under par round (71) in the morning but then slumped to 82 in the afternoon, which is not like Delport who is normally
a solid performer. It was Hendrik Burger who closed with a 70 after a morning 73 and earned himslef a well deserved 3 shot victory. The Board of the Sunshine Tour met in Johannesburg on Tuesday August 16th and confirmed that Selwyn Nathan would continue to serve in the position of executive director and carry out the responsibilities of commissioner. Nathan stepped into the role when former commissioner Gareth Tindall stepped down in June to take up a chief executive position back in the corporate sector. There had been speculation that Tindall’s position would be filled permanently, but the chairman and the Board have agreed that the interim arrangement is working efficiently. Nathan has been involved with a number of important new initiatives, including the proposed world championship event and the board has requested that he stays on in his current role until these initiatives have been brought to conclusion.

Bunkers – “Explode the Oval” Clinton is a member of the Sunshine Tour, European Tour and the Professional Golfers Association of South Africa
The explosion shot from the bunker can be a great asset to any golfer’s short game and need not be feared. This simple technique should have you splashing them out to give in no time! Once in the practice bunker, draw an oval about six inches wide with either your hand or your club. Envision your ball in the centre of the oval.

TUITION & INSTRUCTION
Make a few swings without the ball and feel like you get the flange of your club to enter into the sand at the back of the oval and exit at the front. The club should not even make contact with the ball but rather try and throw as much of the sand that is in the oval onto the green.
Focus on lifting the sand out of the bunker while keeping the clubface open. This technique is best achieved if the club path is steeper than normal.
To Recap: •
Bottom of the club (flange) enters the back side of the oval
•
Bottom of the club (flange) exits at the front side of the oval
•
Throw the sand that is in the oval towards or onto the green
•
Clubface to stay open
•
Swing on a steeper path (feel as though the club is picked up on the takeaway)
Good Luck with this tip and if you are still struggling with your bunker play after trying this tip, please consult with your local PGA Professional.

Is sy wit of swart? Gaan hy haar weer verneuk?

PUTTING BASICS Right guys and girls, hope you have been practicing hard the last two months! In this edition, we will be covering a few PUTTING BASICS! The PUTTING STROKE is a bit different from the rest of the “swings” in golf because you don’t use your wrists, hands or elbows during the action. In fact, you must try to keep these parts of your body as still as possible. The main aim of the putting stroke is to keep the PUTTER FACE SQUARE throughout the movement in order to get the ball rolling towards your intended TARGET.
Emile Steinmann, Elite Coach Tuks Golf Academy
70
But first.... You need to be sure that the putter face is aiming at your TARGET before you start your stroke! Here’s how to do it...

KIDS STUFF
Let’s imagine that the putt in Pic 1 is a straight putt on a level green. I start by choosing my TARGET, which in this case will be the centre of the hole.
I then draw an imaginary line from my TARGET to my BALL, this is known as the BALL-TO-TARGET LINE. I then choose a SPOT a few inches ahead of my ball on the BALL-TO-TARGET LINE and then aim my PUTTER FACE to that SPOT.
You will notice that the AIM LINE on your putter should be pointing straight to the SPOT and hence, straight to your TARGET!
Remember, when putting the most important thing is to aim your PUTTER FACE to your TARGET and to keep it SQUARE during your PUTTING STROKE! More on that in next issue!
Have fun practicing and playing!

He played in 6 successive Opens from 1974 to 1979. As an amateur he won most of the local tournaments including The SA Amateur, The Transvaal Amateur, The Northern Transvaal Amateur and the World Team Championship with Neville Sundelson. In 1975 he was selected to play for South Africa against a European team at Glendower Golf Course. Playing with Lee Trevino in the 1975 Open was really special for our mystery golfer as he says that he enjoyed the way that Trevino could shape his shots according to what was needed, it is for this same reason that he enjoyed playing with Dale Hayes. While those “best players to never have won a major” are well established, who are the mostly likely one-time winners to step up to the next level?
Now the game is hemorrhaging with fresh talent and names filling up the ranks of major champions. Thirteen consecutive majors have been won by different golfers, 10 of them first-timers on the major pedestal. Career-threatening injury led Nadal to consider golf career Devastated and "without appetite for life," Rafael Nadal contemplated a move into professional golf after a career-threatening injury sidelined him, the 10-time Grand Slam champion has written in his autobiography. The Spanish player writes in "Rafa" that doctors discovered a rare foot injury in 2005 that had the potential to sideline him for good, prompting thoughts of a future in golf. In the book, provided to The Associated Press and to be released in the United States on Tuesday, the 25-year-old Nadal describes his toughest on-court battles with Roger Federer at the 2008 Wimbledon final and subsequent Australian Open. But his off-court problems play a large part in the former top-ranked player's career.
as "something Sicilian ... without the malice or guns."
Still, his lowest point seems to have been when doctors discovered a congenital bone problem in the bridge of his left foot soon after a five-set victory over Ivan Ljubicic in Madrid on his toughest indoor surface.
Perhaps the strangest revelation is Nadal's dislike of animals, especially dogs: "I doubt their intentions."
Nadal said that joy was soon replaced by "a state of deepest gloom." "(The) diagnosis had initially been like a shot to the head," Nadal writes. "The bone still hurts me. It remains under control, just, but we can never drop our guard." Nadal offers interesting insight into his regimen and his family offers some surprising details about the Manacor native in the 250-page memoir, which was written by John Carlin who authored the book that director Clint Eastwood turned into the film Invictus. Nadal's mother Ana Maria Parera labels him a "scaredy cat" who sleeps with a light on; an obedient and docile child who became the "family mascot" inside a close-knit family that Carlin describes September/October 2011
Of Federer there is mostly respectful reflections of a rival and friend that he calls "a blessed freak of nature" for his talent. The closest Nadal comes to criticism is when he says Federer mis-hit a shot "the way an ordinary club player might" while recounting the epic All-England final that delivered the first of his two Wimbledon wins. Of current top-ranked player Novak Djokovic, who has beaten Nadal in five straight finals this year, there is trepidation of a "formidable opponent" who is "one hell of a player, temperamental but hugely talented."

struck boldy enough to have a chance of falling in. Although a missed putt counts one stroke no matter where it stops, balls that run by the hole are apparently more "professional." Analyst - Psychiatric specialist who treats individuals suffering from the delusion that playing golf is a form of pleasure. Approach Shot - A shot which, if it had not caught the lip of the bunker and dropped back into the sand, would have rolled across the green and gone into the water. Army golf - Phrase used to describe the inconsistent, wayward shots of amateur golfers, that is, "left-right, left-right" (like the drill sergeant's call during an army march). Arnie's Army - Name given to the legions of loyal fans who flock to tournaments to follow Arnold Palmer, golf's "king." Arnie has always been a fan favorite, and dozens of times his fans have kicked, blocked, or thrown a wayward Palmer shot back onto the fairway or green to help their hero. Away - The player whose ball lies farthest from the hole is "away" and is required by the rules of golf to make the first shot. If, after the stroke is taken, the ball still lies farthest from the hole, the rules permit the player to kick the first bag and throw the first club.
