LE T TER TO THE EDITOR

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader. Dear Ed To wear a hoody or not wear a hoody? That is the question as Tyrrell Hatton caused a furore by wearing one on all four days of his victory at the BMW PGA Championship a few weeks back, stirring up the issue of suitable golf attire yet again. Personally I can’t stand them and every time I see someone wearing one I am reminded of a rapper or a gangster, certainly not a golfer. They undoubtedly don’t seem practical either as the hood can surely impeded your swing. Standards have to be maintained and although some amongst the younger generation may disagree with me I know that all of my friends endorse my viewpoint on this issue. No hoody’s in my fourball thank you!

Dear Stan Thank you for writing in (or should I say emailing us), my point here being that times change. The days of the inkwell and quill pen are long gone just as the fashions of yesteryear are a thing of the past. The players on Tour that I have seen wearing hoody’s all look very respectable. The hoody’s are stylish, lightweight and quite honestly if they impeded the swing in any way I seriously doubt that the likes of Hatton, Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas would be wearing them. Don’t pitch up to play in your Metallica hoody but one made specifically for the sport is in my opinion most acceptable. Regards

Managing your game around a golf course

L

et’s do a quick recap on the previous articles and what we covered. We started with the understanding of how the club movement affects the golf ball, we know that the more you understand how the club affects the ball the more consistent you can become. We then looked at getting better off the tee and how understanding the different potential penalties that you will incur by missing the fairway can help you with more insight as to where you can save shots. In issue 3 we covered approach play, now this is any shot where you attempt to hit the green, what you will notice in the stats is the trend between having good quality approach stats and victories on the PGA Tour. To view this trend make sure you visit the Golf Stats Coach Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/GolfStatsCoach/

skills in each aspect of the game, how do we put this all together? By understanding how to better manage our game and current skill set around the golf course. Here are some strategy tips to help you with that: 1. Free up and rip it of the tee Longer drives convert to lower scores, we can clearly see a trend among the players on tour who are consistently in the running and the distance they hit it off the tee. We also know that a 30 yard advantage of the tee will gain you 7.25 shots in a 4 round tournament. Have a look at this image explaining the advantage of longer drives. This is based on a 10 handicap player.

We then looked at short game and putting in issues 4 and 5 respectively, what we can learnt is that improving your skills in these areas can definitely lead to lowering your scores. Now that we have learnt how to improve our

tuition & instruction If you and your golf buddies are all a 10 handicap and you hit it 30m further than your friend who hits it 200m off the tee you will according to the strokes gained stats gain +0.24 shots on him and that equates to +3.36 shots in a round of golf where you hit 14 tee shots. Now imagine teeing off with a potential 3 shot advantage every time? 2. Have a trusty longer club in your bag Too often I see recreational golfers reach for the longest club that they think can get them to the green but instead this can typically get them into trouble as it is a very difficult shot to play. So instead of always reaching for the 3 wood and forcing yourself to hit it perfect, put the ball into play with a more lofted long club like a 5 or 4 hybrid that is a bit easier to hit. This will help you avoid some unnecessary wasted shots and also help you build confidence during the round.

5. Always be aware of the cost of danger zones Knowing what the potential cost is on any given danger zone will help you to understand which landing areas you would want to avoid. As per the strokes gained stats we can see that the highest penalty is incurred when hitting a ball out of bounds, this automatically costs you 2 shots. Avoiding a penalty area, previously known as water hazards will potentially save you 1.25 shots. As per the image below if the strokes gained stat is 3 from that specific distance in the fairway, we can see that the rough can add 0.25 shots to your score and a bunker 0.34 from the same distance. This can easily be avoided by taking on less risky shots.

3. Play the percentages into the green If we again look at what the Pro’s stats are regarding how far they finish the ball to the hole from 100m out, we will see that they also don’t hit every shot to 3ft from the hole. It’s easy to get mislead by only watching the leaders on television. But the truth is that the average distance to the hole from 100m out is 6m and this is for a professional golfer. So if you hit the middle of the green you will even on a large green be about 10m from the hole, keep this in mind next time you try and pull off the perfect shot to a pin that is tucked behind a bunker or close to the penalty area. 4. Make small strokes around the green •

The social media poll, conducted by Syngenta Golf, follows the publication of a multimedia article ‘The new value of golf’s green spaces, highlighting the stress-relieving benefits of golf and golf courses. In the article, environmental psychologist Prof Jenny Roe of the University of Virginia, explains, “Contact with nature slows down our stress response and induces calm. “It is promoting stress resilience, it is improving our mood, it’s decreasing our risk of depression and increasing our social wellbeing, particularly on a golf course where you are interacting with other members of that community.” Scientific research published in 2019 has also

indicated spending at least two hours per week in nature is good for health and wellbeing. Mark Birchmore, Syngenta Global Head of Marketing, Turf and Landscape, said: “This is a simple, snapshot survey with a small sample, but it gives an indication of some of the reasons people have joined golf clubs in recent months and suggests further research into golf and mental welling would be worthwhile. “While the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted issues of stress in day-to-day life, the reality is that the experience of spending time in nature on a golf course has always been one of the sport’s key benefits – it’s just rarely communicated as a marketing message. But it is something clubs might consider as it could be an important factor in the value proposition for golf and club membership.”

he Pink Golf Challenge, a bi-annual fundraiser organized by the Thato Molamu Foundation, took place on Friday, 30 October this year. This is an initiative by the Thato Molamu Foundation which was publicly launched on the 4th of February 2020 on World Cancer Day at the World of Golf in partnership with Doctors that Care to raise funds for screening, testing and cancer education and research for men and women who do not have access to good quality health care. health-care systems. While the quality of life for cancer patients globally has been well researched, the perspectives of cancer patients living in South Africa is relatively unknown. In addition, the current National Cancer Register was last updated in 2014. The event, held at the Eagle Canyon Golf Course in Roodepoort, seeks to raise funds for the early detection of three of the most common forms of cancer in underserved communities. The theme of the challenge, Screen to Save, emphasizes the importance of regular screening for breast, cervical and prostate cancer because treatment outcomes are much better if these cancers are detected early.

SPECIAL FEATURE - NKONYENI E VOLUTION

The Nkonyeni Evolution

How a Cattle Farm Became a World-class Golf Estate in Eswatini

I

t all started in 1959 when the late Johan Rudolph, grandfather of Johan Rudolph III, discovered a piece of paradise in the south-western part of what was then known as Swaziland. To his farmer’s eye, the fertile lands – blessed with an abundance of water from the Great Usuthu River – was the ideal place for cattle farming. It was a wild time and what passed for infrastructure back then where wildlife trails and footpaths. Johan Rudolph II became so enamored with the land that in 1968 he packed up his family and moved them all to Eswatini to make Nkonyeni their permanent home. In 1997, after graduating from university, Johan Rudolph III moved to Eswatini to join his family’s farming business and to start a family of his own. His love for his family and the farm, along with

26

his passion for the indigenous bush, inspired Johan to develop a residential golf estate on Nkonyeni Farm. The cattle farming area was earmarked for the Nkonyeni Bushveld and with the help of golf course designer Phil Jacobs, development started in 2005 and was fully completed in 2008. Nkonyeni Bushveld Course | Vital Statistics The Nkonyeni Bushveld course meanders through the private game reserve, providing old and young players with a unique experience at the 18th hole that requires a shot across the Usuthu River onto an island green. SPECIAL FEATURE - NKONYENI E VOLUTION The Lost City at Sun City. The Course was further constructed by Robert Richardson from Tee to Green Projects. With the success of the Bushveld course and not being one for idle hands, Johan decided on the development of a second golf course, namely the Golden Eagle Links. The land set aside for this new project was previously used for crop farming and very few trees remained. It differed greatly from the area the bushveld course was built on and presented an opportunity to do something totally different. The lack of trees and rolling plains made the area perfect for a links-style golf course and so The Golden Eagle Links was conceptualised. Construction started in 2018 and is estimated to be completed by 2022. The first 9 holes of the links were officially opened for play in 2020. The course – the first Matko57 design in Africa – was designed by 2010 Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen and Peter Matkovich and is estimated to open in 2022. Louis Oosthuizen has moved into the business of golf course design and has partnered with world-renowned golf course designers, Peter Matkovich. This remarkable partnership is backed by the Matkovich Group, one of the world’s leading golf course design, construction and maintenance companies. 9-hole Links | Vital Statistics The Golden Eagle Links is inspired by Louis’ love for St Andrews Links. It is stress-free living, within a secure estate – complete with nature trails, a health spa and the promise of not one, but two golf courses to equal any in the world. Situated next to the Usuthu River in Eswatini, Nkonyeni Residential Golf Estate features a 400 hectare game reserve, conferencing facilities, restaurants, a clubhouse, tennis and squash courts, adventure tours, as well as a host of exciting amenities and activities. Don’t merely dream of visiting. Dream of residing here. Because now, you can. Only a few opportunities remain at Nkonyeni Golden Eagle Residential. However, Nkonyeni Savannah, Silver Leaf and River Close will be launching soon, with 440 freehold residential properties.

November | December 2020

Definitely a cart, especially after training. I don’t mind walking scenic courses though. • If you could pick a golf swing, who’s would it be? Rickie Fowler. • Have you ever had a hole-in-one? I don’t think I will ever get one but I will try my best. • What would be your ideal fourball? Rickie Fowler, Dominic Hendricks (team mate), Lexi Thompson and obviously Tiger Woods.

JOHN COLLIER 2020

THIRTEENTH ANNUAL

John Collier Survey THIRD PARTY REVIEW AND CERTIFICATION

A

very tough year is drawing to a close and notwithstanding this, many golf clubs throughout South Africa have been returning their updated John Collier Annual Survey Questionnaires. A brief scan of these documents indicates that many clubs, curtailed by the COVID 19 lock down regulations, found the time to collate their data, update the Questionnaire and send it back. In terms of the 2019 2020 review period, 195 clubs participated in the John Collier Questionnaire and in June 2020 after assessing all these questionnaires, the TOP CLUB in South Africa is announced. You will recall St Francis Links was the Top Club. In terms of compliance level status 18 clubs achieved GOLD STATUS, 41 clubs achieved SILVER STATUS and 136 clubs achieved BRONZE STATUS. There are many advantages

40

of participating in the John Collier Survey. For example, International research indicates that clubs who participate in third party reviews and certification are better prepared and responsive to negative publicity and are agile enough to move with changing circumstances. This is certainly applicable to South African golf clubs as well. All golf clubs throughout South Africa are invited to participate in the 2020/2021 Survey. The closing date is the end of November 2020. The costs are minimal, requiring only the time it takes to complete and return the questionnaire, while the benefits are significant. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to email at ajcollier@telkomsa.net or visit the John Collier Website at www.johncolliergolf.com. JOHN COLLIER Johannesburg

Magnificent Macnab on the rise again

S

outh Africa’s leading amateur Caitlyn Macnab picked up where she left off with yet another dazzling victory in the Ekurhuleni Women’s Championship in October. The Serengeti golfer Macnab cemented her spot at the top of the Womens Golf South Africa Open and Junior Rankings in February with a superior performance in the Aon SA Women’s Amateur Stroke Play and Match Play Championships. However, the double triumph at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club would mark a final competitive appearance for the GolfRSA Elite Squad

member before the government issued the Level 5 hard lockdown. Like her peers, Macnab took to the fairways as soon as golf was re-opened in June, but a heavy academic load in her final school year restricted her time on the course. Yet there was no stopping the talented golfer in her first ranking event at Glendower GC. Macnab lived up to her number one billing with a dominant performance, firing rounds of 71, 72 and 67 to claim the Open Championship title with a three-shot victory on six-under-par 210 and bagging the Junior and Closed

A M AT E U R N E W S Her triumph in the Ekurhuleni Women’s Open in 2017 signalled the start of a long stretch of winning performances for Macnab and she was over the moon to bring it home once again.

Championships titles to boot. “I am ecstatic to finish the season on such a high note,” said the 18-year-old Macnab, a finalist in the Emerging Athlete category in the recent Momentum gsport SA Women’s Sports Awards. “Our final matric exams are around the corner, so I knew it would be my last event of the season. To be honest, I was a little apprehensive when we teed off at Glendower. I kept fit during the lockdown and I tried to keep my game sharp. I hit balls into a net in the garden, practised my drills and putted on the bedroom carpet. I got out on the course as soon as golf re-opened, but you never really know how your game will hold up under competitive pressure.

“Knowing that I would only be playing this one ranking event did put some pressure on me, so I am really excited that I was able to pull it off. This performance has really boosted my confidence. Once I’ve completed my final exams, I’m going to work really hard on my game to start the 2021 season with a bang. I will be heading to the States next August to take up a golf scholarship at Texas Christian University, so I want to make those first six months count.” Fellow Serengeti golfer Nadia van der Westhuizen fired a final round 68 to clinch the runner-up spot on three-under 213, while Pretoria Country Club’s Danielle du Toit finished third on 223. The GolfRSA Elite Squad member is home on a break from Purdue University in the States. Other multiple winners included Lonique Jansen van Vuuren, who scooped up the B-Division Open, Closed and Junior titles, and Cheryl Lindsay, who won the C-Division Open and C-Division Senior titles.

Macnab said she battled a balky putter in the first two rounds, but she found the stride that saw her dominate in the 2019 season during the final round. “Over the first two rounds I missed a lot of putts inside two to three metres. The final round began much the same, but then, on the ninth hole, I holed a clutch putt for birdie and that was the moment the momentum shifted,” she said. She reeled in five more birdies on the home stretch, leaving the opposition behind. “Just like that, I found my rhythm and stroke and the confidence started flooding back,” said the Grant Veenstra Golf Academy member. “The putts just all went my way.”

Maas sealed a 12-shot victory with a final-round 66 to win on 27-under-par. He came within three shots of the 72-hole record set by Albert Kruger in the Ekurhuleni Open at ERPM in 2002. He did, however, equall the next best score, set by fellow GolfRSA National Squad member and SA No 1 Casey Jarvis in the 2018 edition of the Ekurhuleni Open at State Mines.

here can’t be too many South African athletes who are able to draw positives out of the the Covid-19 pandemic, but for GolfRSA National Squad member Christiaan Maas, the hard lockdown turned out to be an unexpected blessing in disguise. The subsequent cancellation of all the national and provincial tournaments bought the talented youngster the necessary time to work out all the kinks and when golf re-opened in June, Maas immediately headed to his home course – Pretoria CC – to fine-tune the improvements. Since late September, Maas racked up four titles in as many weeks – two victories against the professionals on the IGT Challenge Tour, a play-off triumph on the new Bushveld Tour and a win on the popular Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series, which qualified him for the Regional Finals. On the Sunday at Irene CC, the youngster made it five for five with a masterclass performance in the Gauteng North Golf Union’s Silver Salver.

Dawid Opperman made it a one-two finish for Pretoria CC when he fired a final round four-under 68 to edge out GolfRSA National Squad member Ryan van Velzen for the runner-up spot. Van Velzen, who celebrated his maiden Big Easy Tour win at Services GC last week, had to settle for third on 13-under after closing with 71.

Saaiman said. “Since all our national tournaments were cancelled at the end of March due to the nationwide Covid-19 lockdown, we had no choice but to base our selection on the rankings as it stood at the end of March when our tournaments were shut down. Martin Vorster, who is second in the rankings, had advised us that he would be unavailable for selection because he is still recovering from a wrist injury, so the next four spots went to Kyle, Yurav, Sam and Christo, respectively ranked third, fourth, fifth and sixth.

he South African Open Championship will add the iconic Gary Player Country Club to its roster of celebrated golf courses that have hosted this championship as it moves to Sun City this year where it will be played from 3-6 December, with support from Nedbank and Sun International. The 110th playing of the second oldest national Open in golf, with prize money of R19.5 million, will complete a thrilling three-week run of tournaments co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and European Tour.

In the absence of the Nedbank Golf Challenge this year, Nedbank and Sun International – both longstanding sponsors of South African professional golf – agreed to support the country’s national Open and the playing opportunities it provides for South Africa’s leading professionals and top amateurs, while at the same time providing the critical business stimulus required in South African professional golf at this time.

The Sunshine Tour announced a strong end to 2020 with the three big events of the Joburg Open, Alfred Dunhill Championship and South African Open Championship – all of which forms part of the Tour’s post-lockdown international restart.

strong South African contingent will gather at Leopard Creek Country Club for the Alfred Dunhill Championship on November 26-29 as they seek to return the famous bronze leopard trophy back to home soil. European Tour winners Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Brandon Stone, George Coetzee and Dean Burmester will spearhead the quest for a South African winner of this prestigious championship following Spaniard Pablo Larrazabal’s December 2019 victory and the 2018 triumph by American David Lipsky. Larrazabal has confirmed that he will return to defend the title he won in spectacular fashion last year as he battled through blisters on the final day to claim his fifth European Tour title.

How best to cope with summer stress By: Sue de Zwart

Rule #1 – be prepared by being proactive Being reactive is costly and leads to a poor end result most of the time. Deal with disease before you see it. Your summer fungicide applications are absolutely critical on your cool season greens as are your autumn & winter fungicide applications for warm season turf (Bermuda, kikuyu, paspalum). We work closely with technical gurus around the world to assist turf managers to apply the right product at the right time. This is based on soil temp wherever possible to take the guessing game out of it. As you can see by this image by the time we can see the disease with the naked eye it is rather late. The recovery process is not only costly but requires more applications at higher rates.

It immediately reduces the clippings by 50 % giving you complete flexibility in your mowing schedule – particularly on fairways & semi rough during wet weather. After the 5th application the difference in density, rooting, playability, colour, water usage & drought tolerance is clearly evident. I have worked with this product since 1996 on warm & cool season turf and it is awesome. A lockdown lifesaver at home too! The other side of the PGR coin is maintaining greens speed for the afternoon field. You only

need 5 litres of Primo Maxx per ha (18 holes for most clubs) per year to have all the benefits we have discussed. It is awesome to see so many country courses enjoying this ride.

Plant Growth Regulators or PGR’s This awesome tool not only gives you so much flexibility as a turf manager, but also makes you look like the star. I love producing the ultimate playing surface Primo Maxxand allows usBergmann to do that. Dr. Karland Dannenberger Wally

Water management: This remains the number 1! Good water management will always be the difference between turf quality. There are so many moisture meters on the market – I would encourage every turf manager to have one – whether it be the R250 hand held unit to the sophisticated POGO. Once you see a hot spot on the surface you have sadly lost roots & a lot of damage is done. Wetting agents play a major part in water
