Dear Neville I am busy watching the Women’s World Cup football at the moment as well as Wimbledon and I am very much looking forward to watching the Netball World Cup which starts on the 12th July. How well these ladies play in these various sports is amazing and their commitment is without compromise. Ladies golf is much the same and I just love following the LPGA Tour. This gets me onto the question of the rewards that these sportswomen receive for their outstanding efforts. It is quite beyond me how they can receive less than their male counterparts. They train just as hard, compete just as hard and yet earn a pittance compared to the men. It is time that sport stepped out of the dark ages and acknowledged that women and men are equal and as such they should be remunerated equally.
Thank you for writing in. I have a simple view on this topic and it goes like this; remuneration in sport is based on popularity (demand) much the same as in music. Miley Cyrus earns more than Bok van Blerk because she is more popular. More people watch men’s golf, soccer and tennis than the women’s equivalent of these games hence the men earn more. To be fair on this matter, how much money does a male ramp model earn compared his female counterpart? Much less and this is simply because female ramp models are in much higher demand. Perhaps the solution would be to do away with separate sporting events and to let men and woman compete against one another. I for one know where my money would be!

Shorten your swing for more consistency by Eugene Schwartz
I
f you are struggling with striking the ball consistently or slicing the golf ball, shortening your golf swing may help to improve this.
Shortening your golf swing is not the worst thing you can do to get a bit more consistency in your golf game. I am not saying that a long swing is bad but there are good players out there who have long golf swings and they have had a lot of success like Bubba Watson and John Daly.

And then you have long hitters on tour who have short golf swings like Jon Rahm and Tony Finau who have had great success as golf professionals. There are a few benefits to having a shorter swing: • ball striking • control • timing • accuracy • balance

tuition & instruction If you are struggling with one of the above I suggest that you try and shorten your golf swing. This will take some hard work and some getting used to as in the beginning you will try to swing harder to get more distance. If you are going to practice this, start off with a pitching wedge and then move on to your irons with a 50% swing. You will gain more confidence as you see your ball striking and timing improve. Keeping a good connection between your arms and body is very important in the golf swing.
Normally what I want my students to feel is that when their shoulders can’t turn any more that is were there backswing should stop. When you have a small rotation I see golfers wrists hinge to much or they lift up their arms to take the club back, this is when there is disconnection in the swing. If you have a big slice you can’t get rid of shorten the swing because it allows the club head to catch up to the rest of the body.
Drills: You can do a few drills at home to get the feeling. (Right handed players) 1.
Stand by a wall and take a slow swing and stop before it touches the wall.

Put a glove or club cover under your right arm, this will keep your right arm connected to your body.

Take a swing where you feel your left arm stopping at a 9 o’clock position.

Being able to play golf, meeting new people from all walks of life and seeing how golf has the ability to bring out a persons true character. 7. The members of a golf club always come first. Do you agree with the phrase “The member is always right”? I strive to keep my members and guests happy. I don’t always succeed but I sure try my utmost best.
We keep our intervals on the tee sheet as big as possible, San Lameer is a resort course and we therefor encourage golfers to enjoy a relaxing round but not at the expense of other players. We have marshals who keep an eye on any possible slow play, it is all about managing your field. 10. Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings and holidays, if so, does this place demands on your personal life? It is more a choice than a requirement but to be successful you need to put the necessary time in. As my mentor Jeff Clause would say, “there are time you need to be at work and times that you don’t. Professionals know how to manage this.”.

Playing in the rain? Tour caddies speak on how to keep grips dry Another huge problem for a caddie when it’s raining is being a human being with only two hands. “The biggest thing is you don’t have enough hands,” said Johnson. “Hold the umbrella, clean the clubs. You need to be an octopus.”
T
our caddies take certain measures to keep their player’s grips dry. The most important thing, according to multiple PGA tour caddies – aside from an umbrella, obviously -- is to keep a number of extra, dry towels in the bag. A towel that dries quickly, such as a “Shammy towel,” can also come in handy, according to Harold Varner III’s caddie Ray Farnell. A dry towel can be a saving grace if the grips do happen to get wet, but a damp towel is worthless. To keep the towel itself from getting wet, many PGA tour caddies loop a towel underneath the umbrella. Unless the umbrella flips over on accident, that towel is safely in a dry place. An absolutely crucial piece of equipment when it’s raining is a bag cover. Without a bag cover, rain water can get directly into the bottom of the golf bag where the grips are exposed to unnecessary moisture. Most PGA tour staff bags come with covers that zip to make getting a club out and back in easy. The caddie must also make sure that the zipper doesn’t stay open for any prolonged period of time.

Unless caddies start getting hand implants – which seems expensive, if not unnecessary – they must rely on their player for assistance. Keeping grips dry is a team effort. “You need your player to help you,” Farnell said. “You need your guy to not walk off with a club. He has to stand with the umbrella, or help while we put the club back in, and dry the grips as you go. As soon as a grip gets wet, everything gets wet.” Lastly, a long-accepted tactic to keep extra gloves dry is to put them in ziplock bags. According to Johnson, however, that may actually be a risky move. “A lot of guys put their gloves in ziplock bags, but if there’s any moisture, it holds the moisture in, too,” said Johnson. Therefore, if one glove in the ziplock bag gets wet then all of the extra grips get wet. That would be bad for anyone not named Fred Couples (who plays golf without a glove on). To summarize, when playing in the rain, it’s crucial to bring extra towels, an umbrella, a club cover, and maybe keep the ziplock bags at home. Also, if you have extra hands, that wouldn’t hurt, either.

Rambo debuts on European Tour
C
hristiaan Bezuidenhout won his first European Tour title in emphatic style with a six shot victory at the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters hosted by the Sergio Garcia Foundation. The South African came into the final day at Real Club Valderrama with a five shot lead and while he saw that trimmed to three at one point, a closing 71 saw him finish at ten under and lift the trophy. The victory also secures Bezuidenhout a Major Championship debut at The Open Championship. Bezuidenhout’s victory completes a remarkable rise for a player who has had to overcome adversity since a young age. At the age of two he mistakenly drank rat poison, an incident that led to him developing a stammer that caused him to suffer anxiety. The beta blockers he took to combat his

stammer led to him failing a doping test at the 2014 Amateur Championship and while his two year ban was reduced to nine months after officials adjudged he had not been seeking to gain a competitive advantage, he missed out on representing his country at the Eisenhower Trophy. Now five years on from those dark days, he is a European Tour winner in his 57th appearance and moves into the top ten of the Race to Dubai Rankings Presented by Rolex after also finishing second and third this season. “I’m proud of myself hanging in there today,” he said. “I was nervous. It’s a tough golf course, anything can happen, especially those last three holes playing into the wind. I’m really pleased with the way I played and to finish it off is unbelievable.” Tournament host Garcia was three under after a 71 - making it 14 top tens in 15 appearances at Valderrama.

Goosen inducted in World Golf Hall of Fame
T
he World Golf Hall of Fame’s membership grew to 160 in June as Dennis Walters, Jan Stephenson, Peggy Kirk Bell, Retief Goosen and Billy Payne received Golf’s Highest Honor during the 2019 Induction Ceremony at the Sunset Center in Carmel-By-The-Sea, Calif. Just three days before the 119th U.S. Open Championship teed off in nearby Pebble Beach, past champions and 28 fellow Hall of Fame Members returned to celebrate the Class of 2019 Inductees including the Co-Chairs of the Selection Commission, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam. “We send our sincere congratulations to the esteemed members of the World Golf Hall of Fame Class of 2019,” said Greg McLaughlin, CEO

of World Golf Foundation. “It is a special evening with so many returning Hall of Fame Members as we kick off the 119th U.S. Open Championship.” Gary Player took to the stage to introduce fellow South African and two-time U.S. Open Champion, Retief Goosen. Goosen joins Ernie Els and Player – who were both present at the Induction Ceremony – as well as Bobby Locke as the fourth South African to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Goosen remarked on his golf career, sharing his love for the game from early on in his life. He recalled the time when he was struck by lightning on the golf course at the age of 15. He beat the odds after quickly recovering and returning to the golf course just a few weeks later, going on to win two U.S. Opens among his 33 worldwide wins.

The PGA tour were showing their appreciation for the military by providing complimentary admission to all U.S. armed forces memebers, including active duty, retired military members and veterans. Leishman Lager is a winner – in more ways than one

ot everyone can go in a restaurant and order a beer that bears your name – not to mention, one that you helped create. Marc Leishman can, though. Three years ago, the Aussie partnered with Back Bay Brewery to create Leishman Lager to serve at a gala for the Begin Again Foundation that he and his wife Audrey started after she recovered from a life-threatening bout with toxic shock syndrome, sepsis and acute respiratory syndrome. What originally was slated for a one-month limited release has proven extremely successful and remains a year-round feature at the brewery in Virginia Beach, where

Audrey grew up and the couple lives with their three young children. It can be bought in grocery stores and ordered in about 100 local restaurants, bars and 19th holes in the area, with a portion of the proceeds going to the foundation.

GolfRSA’s Vorster conquers County Louth for Irish win
M
artin Vorster made it two in a row for the GolfRSA National Squad when he coasted to a four-shot triumph in the East of Ireland Amateur Open Championship last month. The Mossel Bay junior became the second successive South African teenager – and only the second foreign champion – in the 78-year history of the high-ranking event when he followed fellow Southern Cape golfer Christo Lamprecht into the winner’s circle at County Louth GC At the age of 17 years, four months and 12 days, Vorster was just seven days older than his Louis Oosthuizen Junior Golf Academy stable-mate Lamprecht, who last year bagged the first trophy on the GolfRSA National Squad UK Tour, funded by business man Johann Rupert. “Last year Christo won in Ireland, Wilco (Nienaber) won The Amateur qualifier and Jovan (Rebula) won The Amateur, so hopefully this is a good omen for the GolfRSA National Squad,” said the delighted Vorster. “This is amazing; I am so, so happy,” said Vorster. “I won the Junior Open at St Andrews after a couple of close calls, and this year, I’ve come close again, but to win my first senior event here in Ireland is indescribable. The pressure was intense, and I’m so proud of the way I managed my game, especially in the last two rounds. “My only goal was to try to keep the ball in play to give myself scoring opportunities, and it was tough to do in a three- to four-club wind. But I stuck to my strategy and it paid off.”

Vorster credited his bagman – fellow GolfRSA National Squad member Christiaan Burke – for keeping him patient. “My ball striking was really good, and I had a lot of birdie chances, but the putts just kept burning the edges. Christiaan kept me focussed on the next shot and the next shot. It was two amazing rounds, really, and I couldn’t be happier.” Vorster was unaware that the legendary Irish golfer Des Smyth – with 24 professional wins and two Ryder Cups – was hiding in the appreciative crowd and keeping an eye on action. “Mr Smyth came up to me after the round to congratulate me and he chatted to me for a while,” the youngster gushed. “It was pretty really special to meet him. It’s not every day you get to meet a player of his calibre and I was humbled by his comments.” Meanwhile, Yurav Premlall from Ekurhuleni finished birdie-birdie for a final round 72 that earned him a share of 10th on one-over 289 and a 72 netted Jordan Duminy from Southern Cape a joint 14th place finish on 290. Casey Jarvis from Ekurhuleni recovered well after a disappointing third round 78 and carded 71 to tie for 27th on six-over 294.

Déjà-vu for Ekurhuleni and Mpumalanga at Maccauvlei

kurhuleni and Mpumalanga celebrated a double victory in the 58th SA Women’s Inter-Provincial Championship last October. In June the two teams did again when they came up trumps in the SA Women’s 72-Hole Teams Championship in Vereening. Ekurhuleni A overcame a four-shot first round deficit to take pole position in the Swiss Team Trophy with a strong performance on moving day at Maccauvlei GC
with a 73 and Macnab backed her up with a 75 for a team total of 148 and a four-shot victory on 13-over 589. “We are absolutely stoked,” said captain Macnab. “We are so proud to be the title holders of the SA Women’s IPT and SA Women’s 72-Hole at the same time.
Mpumalanga went the distance at Maccauvlei with a dominant performance in the Challenge Caitlyn Macnab, Nadia van der Westhuizen and Trophy. GolfRSA Boys seal record win at World Cup

ighteen years after Major winner Louis Oosthuizen won the Junior Golf World Cup with Masters champion Charl Schwartzel, Albert Kruger and Christian Ries, two protégées from his Junior Golf Academy, Martin Vorster and Christo Lamprecht, did the Open champion proud with a record-breaking victory for South Africa alongside GolfRSA National Squad team-mates Sam Simpson and Casey Jarvis at Chukyo GC in Japan.
The GolfRSA Boys Team posted three-under 210 in Friday’s final round to triumph on a staggering 41-under-par 811 total. South Africa became the first team in the 27-year history of the team event to break the 40-under barrier and wound up a full 11 shots clear of runner-up Japan and 12 ahead of Spain. Vorster from Mossel Bay and Western Province’s Simpson led the challenge on the last day with a pair of 68s. They were backed up by Ekurhuleni’s Jarvis, who carded 74 while Lamprecht returned a non-counting 75. “We’re extremely proud of them,” said South Africa captain Eden Thompson.

South Africa’s boys had already rewritten the record book earlier in the week, becoming the first team in at least a dozen years to break 200 in a single day when they combined for a 14-under-par 199 in the second round. One day later, they went even lower at 19-under 195.

Rose blooms in Nomads National event “The first day was a little messy,” he explained. “I think I only hit seven greens in regulation, but thankfully my short game kept me in it.
“I was only two back and I knew I couldn’t play as badly as the first round, so it was a relief when I started well. From then on it was almost perfect – I was hitting fairways and greens and I only made one mistake, on the 17th. “I even holed out from the bunker for eagle on the 13th and then I chipped in for birdie on the last.” Rose lost out to Ekurhuleni junior Yurav Premlall in the first Nomads National Order of Merit event of the season at Umhlali Country Club and was delighted to tick the box at Modderfontein.

entral Gauteng’s Kian Rose holed a timely chip shot from over the back of the green for birdie on the final hole to snatch victory in the Nomads Inland National Order of Merit Inland at Modderfontein GC. The 17-year-old from Royal Johannesburg & Kensington GC fired a final round six-under-par 66 to surpass overnight leader Christiaan Maas and claim his first national title and second major tournament victory, following his success in the first Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series. Having struggled to a level par opening round, Rose made five birdies, an eagle and solitary drop to win by a stroke over Nikhil Rama.

He was a member in his earlier years and may have benefitted from some local knowledge, although he admits it had been over two years since his last round on the course. Thankfully for him, the familiar surroundings brought out the best in his game.

Magnificent Macnab lands Nomads SA Girls title
S
outh Africa’s number one ranked Caitlyn Macnab lived up to her star billing when she celebrated her 10th start in the Nomads SA Girls Championship with a trophy finish in the beginning of July. There is an old saying in golf – “beware the sick golfer” – and on this occasion it was the sick golfer who came out on top at Orkney GC. The 17-year-old from Serengeti carded a final round one-under-par 71 to edge out fellow Ekurhuleni golfer Kiera Floyd by one stroke on four-over 220, lifting the title and the ultimate prize it carries – a start in the Duke of York Young Champions Trophy in September. GolfRSA Junior Proteas Macnab, Floyd & Kaiyuree Moodley claimed a sixth place finish in the Toyota Junior Golf World Cup two weeks ago, but as soon as the team arrived back on home soil, Macnab and Moodley both went down with swine flu.. “Kai had to withdraw and I was a doubtful

starter after spending four days in bed, but I came because I had to try,” Macnab said. “I have dreamt of winning the Nomads SA Girls since I first teed it up as a seven-year-old. It’s the most amazing feeling to be the champion; I am just over the moon. I was really nervous on the first day, because I hadn’t hit a ball for nine days. I didn’t expect to lead the first round, but after that it was all about playing for the win.”

Snyders captures SA’s first US North & South Junior win Proteas lifted the Toyota Junior Golf World Cup in Japan in June. Snyders shot straight to the top of the leaderboard with a 67 in the opening round, which was also played at Pinehurst No 8. The second round was played at Pinehurst’s iconic No 2 course, which hosted the Ryder Cup in and the US Open in 1999, 2005 and 2014, and Snyders put together a patient and steady even par 70 to open up a two shot lead on the field. Not only will his name be emblazoned in bronze on the Perpetual Wall in the Heritage Hall of Pinehurst’s main clubhouse, but the victory earned Snyders a return trip to Pinehurst Resort for the 2020 Men’s North & South Amateur. The Durbanville golfer was pleased as punch with his international breakthrough. “I haven’t won a national tournament at home, so to come to America for the first time, to contend and to keep it together and win is pretty special,” he said.

GolfRSA and Bridge Fund Managers celebrated a big win in early July as Western Province junior Tyran Snyders became the first South African champion in the 41st North and South Junior Championship in the United States. The 18-year-old Paarl teenager fired a flawless four-under-par 68 on Pinehurst No 8 in the final round to triumph by three shots on nine-under 205. The historic victory continues the international winning streak for South Africa’s juniors after Martin Vorster won in the East of Ireland Amateur and the GolfRSA Junior

“This has been an amazing trip and I am so grateful. I can’t thank Bridge Fund Managers enough for giving our juniors a chance to compete for this experience. It was incredible to tee it up in a tournament where you rub shoulders with the cream of US junior amateur golf. This is undoubtedly the highlight of my career and I couldn’t be happier.” Van Velzen, meanwhile, finished an impressive seventh. The Benoni golfer opened with a 74, claimed the low round honours at Pinehurst No 2 in the second round with a two-under 68 and closed with a 73 for a final score of one-over 215.

Woodland wins first Major with Wilson

ary Woodland denied Brooks Koepka’s bold bid at history and made U.S. Open memories of his own with two clutch shots, a birdie putt on the final hole and the silver trophy in his hands at Pebble Beach. Koepka, trying to match a 114-year-old record with his third straight U.S. Open, kept the pressure on until the very end. Woodland was just as unflappable and got better with each big moment he faced, whether it was a 3-wood from 263 yards or a lob wedge from the putting surface that will take its place with other big moments on the 17th hole of Pebble Beach. Needing three putts to win, Woodland finished in style with a 30-foot birdie putt for a 2-under 69, giving him the lowest 72-hole score in six U.S. Opens at Pebble Beach and a three-shot victory over Koepka. He raised both arms in the air to salute the crowd, turned toward the Pacific and slammed down his fist. “I never let myself get ahead,” Woodland said.

“Once that went in, it all came out of me. It’s special to finish it off here at Pebble Beach.” Koepka had to settle for a footnote in history. He closed with a 68, making him the first player with all four rounds in the 60s at a U.S. Open without winning. Woodland, a 35-year-old who played basketball for one year at Washburn before taking a golf scholarship at Kansas, is immensely popular with his peers, many of whom gathered behind the 18th to celebrate his first major with him. His biggest moment of the year wasn’t any shot he hit. He starred in a viral video shared by the PGA TOUR with Amy Bockerstette, a 20-year-old with Down Syndrome, during the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Woodland invited her to play the par-3 16th, and Amy hit into a bunker, blasted onto the green and made the par putt, all the while saying, “You got this.” That was the message she sent Woodland on Saturday night.

He was born in San Bernardino, California on the 2nd November 1941. He turned professional in 1964 and his first PGA Tour win came at the 1967 Colonial National Invitation. He won the PGA Championship in 1970 & 1976. He joined the Senior PGA Tour in 1991 and had continued success, topping the Senior Tour money list in 1993 and 1994. His fourteen senior titles include three Senior Majors, the 1992 and 1994 Senior Players Championship and the 1996 U.S. Senior Open. He played for the U.S. team in the Ryder Cup in 1971 and 1977. He was the Americans’ victorious non-playing captain in the 1991 Ryder Cup. He always had a reputation as one of the best putters on tour and in 2009 he was credited with assisting Phil Mickelson with his putting which helped him win the 2009 Tour Championship. He wrote a guide to putting called “Unconscious Putting”. Answer on page 88
