Dear ed Woop, woop, woop! Golf courses are open and how wonderful is it to be on the fairways again? This whole Covid-19 affair has been extremely taxing on everyone and heaven alone knows why golf courses were kept closed for so long? I have been playing at Windsor Golf Course in Durban since the reopening and the numbers of golfers on the course has been hugely encouraging. It is almost as it was before, all the protocols are in place and it’s simply a matter of having your temperature taken, providing your details and off you go.

Thank you for writing in, your exuberance shines through in your letter and I think you echo the sentiments of all golfers across South Africa. I doubt we will ever be given a rational reason as to why golf courses were closed for so long; government works in strange ways at times. Yet we are back and the numbers are indeed encouraging.
Those at the coal face of negotiations with government were GolfRSA, the PGA of South Africa and the Club Management Quite honestly being out on the golf Association. Short Game

M
ost people include putting into the “short game” category, however putting is a game within the game its self. This we will cover in the next issue. Short game in this article refers to the shots around the green. MYTH: “Short game is the most important; if your short game is good you will score well” TRUTH: The better your ball striking is the less important short game becomes. You are probably wondering how I can say that the better your ball striking the less important short game becomes. What I have discovered using strokes gained stats to analyse a players true performance is that how short game has a different importance level to different golfers. For you to determine your true strengths and weaknesses you need to monitor your strokes gained stats before spending hours around the green. Check out www.golfstatscoach.com for more info. Tiger Woods only had one short game shot in his final round of the 2019 Masters, so

for him the short game was definitely not what made him win. Now the mid to high handicapped player is faced with more short game shots in a round due to either, distance limitations, poor ball striking or is someone that is very new to the game. The key is to place your attention in the areas that will gain you shots and not just generalise. This being said though, if you have below average to poor skill in the short game department, no matter your skill level, it is worth your while to at least put in the effort to learn to hit a basic chip shot and a basic bunker shot. Now let’s look at the factors that have an influence on the short game: 1. Strike 2. Club path and face angle 3. Angle of attack and loft of the club 4. Club head speed A good shot is a combination of all these factors working together and also depends on the type of shot you want to play. I will cover the basic bunker and chip shot.

tuition & instruction Bunker shots Most players I come across that struggle getting out of bunkers do not understand the opposite rule in golf “hit down to get the ball up”. They try and scoop the ball out of the sand instead of using the bounce angle of the club to their advantage. Tip: Hit the block out of the sand; do not help the ball up.
the green as quickly as possible, in other words playing the shot that requires the least amount of movement as well as the least effort. Here are some factors to take into consideration: •
What is the lie?

How much distance between you and the edge of the green?
•
How much green is there between the edge of the green and the hole?
As we find ourselves in the winter months, most lies you will be faced with will be firmer than normal and this is what gets under the skin of most players who struggle to chip. Tip: Maintain the “Y” when chipping. Choosing the right shot to play at the right time is a big part in having success with your chipping. The majority of the time it is best to get the ball rolling on

HEALTH & LIFEST YLE RSA and PGA of South Africa were my first priority and ensuring staff were ready at such short notice definitely put a lot of pressure on everyone not to mention ensuring the course was kept in tip top shape for eager golfers who were chomping at the bit waiting for courses to be opened. What I also have found challenging is ensuring that our golfers adhere to the new protocols, its difficult to monitor everyone at all times. 10. How is the golfing public, members and your staff responding to the new rules and regulations? All is good at the moment but there are times that a little reminder is required. 11. With consumers already being careful on how they spend their money these days (pre Covid-19), what would your plan be to attract people to the club after lockdown? With the hard lockdown that we have had, avid golfers (and there are many) could not wait to get back to the golf course and away from their four walls. So golf times are really filling up and due to the current restrictions of socializing numbers as set by government we have had to open our course on Mondays which used to be maintenance day. 12. Slow play is one of the biggest problems in golf today, how do you manage slow play at Ebotse Links? Ebotse Links is known to be a golf cart golf course and this has helped with slow play, but slow play will always be around. As a golfer we should adhere to the rules and always try keep up with the players infront. A key part of reducing slow play is that there is open communication between marshalls and myself and the Pro Shop.

13. The members of a golf club always come first. Do you agree with the phrase “The member is always right�? A members concern is always addressed to the best of our ability and in most cases yes the member is always right as is with most customer relation industries. 14. Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life? Being golf director or in any managerial position in the sporting fraternity, your personal time is always halved. 15. What are your short & long term goals? Short term is to see that Ebotse Links is running smoothly with all the protocols in place, long term is to ensure that the club grows from strength to strength. 16. Covid-19 aside, what is your opinion on the state of golf in South Africa? Pre Covid-19 I found that the younger generation (young executive) was showing a definite interest in the sport as a business hub and we were lucky enough to be in a well-established area. The state of golf is definitely now on the increase and shall in time become more family-oriented. 17. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Spend time with friends and family and have a good braai, once permitted by the government. 18. Do you still get time to play? Yes, I definitely do. A huge perk with my position is that I am able to play with my members and often encouraged to do so, it’s important to build relationships with all my members and what better way to do that than on the course.

'Bones' returns to Muirfield Village with Fitzpatrick
H
aving caddied for Phil Mickelson for more than 25 years, there isn’t much of Muirfield Village that Jim “Bones” Mackay hasn’t seen.
Ballesteros and Lee Westwood, among others. But with Foster remaining in the UK with his family during the COVID-19 pandemic, adjustments have been made.
So when a text message came into Matthew Fitzpatrick’s phone from the veteran looper turned broadcaster asking if he could be of assistance while the Englishman’s regular caddie was back across the Atlantic, the answer was an emphatic yes.
After using Cayce Kerr as a fill-in for his last three tournaments, Fitzpatrick now turns to Mackay for the Workday Charity Open and then the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide. Both events will be held at Muirfield Village where Mackay also caddied during the 2013 Presidents Cup. Foster will return for the World Golf Championships–FedEx St. Jude Invitational later in the month.
Fitzpatrick, a former U.S. Amateur winner and five-time champion on the European Tour, usually uses another veteran caddie – fellow Englishman Billy Foster who has had a distinguished career on bags with Seve

He had a guest-caddie stint for Justin Thomas in Hawaii when Jimmy Johnson was injured in 2018. Mackay could yet be a secret weapon for Fitzpatrick based on experience alone. Not only has Mackay seen the course multiple times since 1990, four years before Fitzpatrick was even born, but he’s done so on Mickelson’s bag. In other words, he’s seen every corner of the map and just about every conceivable escape angle as well. With the course being set up differently over the two tournaments, Mackay’s experience could prove invaluable. Fitzpatrick said he’s yet to get any great stories specific to Mickelson, but he has a few weeks to try to coax them out. That is between

picking Mackay’s brains on the course itself. With no fans on site in our current COVID-19 climate, Mackay will get his first taste of caddying without throngs of people to navigate. “The one thing I am lucky to have is a good memory,” Mackay said. “I’ve seen it in an array of different conditions, different winds. It’s a question of me learning Matt’s game as quickly as I can and if he’s got a question for me I’d better be able to answer it. That’s my job as his caddie.” Since the return, Fitzpatrick finished T32 at the Charles Schwab Challenge and T14 at the RBC Heritage before missing the cut at the Travelers Championship. A T9 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard right before the shutdown and a seventh-place finish last fall at the World Golf Championships–HSBC Champions have seen the 25-year-old sit 83rd in the FedExCup standings.

A frustrating time at home
My game needs a bit of work, but I am having fun being back on the course. With the current restrictions, I am fairly sure we won’t be playing tournaments this year. Eventually things will return to normal and hopefully I can pick up from where I left off.
Being part of the GolfRSA squad has afforded me the opportunity to travel substantially and in turn I have missed a lot of school in the past. Lockdown was a first for us but probably not such a bad thing as I have been able to catch up on school work. I had a few online extra maths lessons etc. As far as practice goes, it is not the same hitting into a net ball after ball. I tried to stick to a routine, do some school work online, hit a few balls and then onto my gym workouts.
My opinion on strength training I’ve tried to work on my physical strength and get into shape during lockdown; I actually have managed to lose 2 or 3 kgs by just eating correctly and exercising more often as I have had more time. I think everyone is built differently and you must find what best suites you.
A return to Golf I was super excited when GolfRSA announced that we could start playing again. The behind the scenes work they put in to get us back on the course was phenomenal. I have been practicing and playing pretty much every day since then.

Hermannsburg Penrose Golf Academy – Preparing Scholars for the Game of Life
W
hen Zola Mkumla, entrepreneur, philanthropist and avid golfer, first met PGA professionals Marc Alexander and Ryan Kimber, none of them could predict that this friendship, which revolved around the love and passion for the game of golf, would someday lead to the foundation of a golfing academy for scholars. Mkumla recently made a significant investment into education by purchasing his alma mater, Hermannsburg School. Founded in 1856, Hermannsburg School, situated near Greytown in the KZN-Midlands, is the oldest independent co-educational boarding school in KwaZulu-Natal. The school has an impeccable academic track record and offers all the usual South African school team and individual sports; but as a small school, its attention to the individual means that considerable effort is being poured into golf as a school sport - and this has seen the formation of the Hermannsburg Penrose Golf Academy. Situated on the St Cathryn’s Country Golf Estate, a short distance from the school, the academy is run by Marc Alexander and Ryan Kimber. Scholars are transported to the academy for their coaching sessions in the school’s brand-new bus fleet, and all necessary golfing equipment is available at no cost, making this usually expensive sport, accessible to all. “Golf is a unique sport which we believe will have a great impact on the scholars if they have the opportunity and exposure to it,” says Mkumla, he himself of humble beginnings, having grown up in a township near Pietermaritzburg. “We believe that golf can

teach many life lessons, as well as give scholars an advantage when taking on the business world. This is why we have started the academy. I have great faith that Marc and Ryan will make this work.” Marc Alexander is a class “AA” PGA professional from Johannesburg. Marc started his golf career at Eye of Africa in 2012; he completed his apprenticeship in two years with the PGA and went from an apprentice to the Head Professional. After five years at Eye of Africa he moved to a more demanding role as the Assistant Golf Director at The Country Club Johannesburg, whilst at CCJ he worked closely with the PGA and soon upgraded to a class “AA” Professional. Ryan Kimber also started his career in golf at Eye of Africa. Ryan spent a little over two years there and then moved to The Els Club at Copperleaf as a shop assistant. He went on to complete his apprenticeship and became a full member of the PGA. The mission of Hermannsburg Penrose Golf Academy is not only to teach its students the mechanics of the game of golf, but also to teach them golfing etiquette, networking skills and, most importantly, build their confidence to be able to go out into the game of life and play the ball, no matter where it lies. “Am I any good at golf? Woody Austin to travel PGA TOUR Champions in new RV
A
ustin hasn’t been playing much during the pandemic, by choice. And he says he won’t necessarily pick up his pace before the scheduled restart of PGA TOUR Champions, on July 31 at the Ally Challenge at Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc, Michigan.

“I’m sure everybody will find a way to be ready,” Austin said. “Maybe a few will be a little rusty. It depends. It’s like anything. You’ve got guys like me who are just happy to still be playing and I

But then you have guys like Bernhard (Langer) and Scott McCarron, who are taking it as seriously as they did when they were 25, grinding every day, playing all the time. I’m not into that. “I’m sure those guys will be very prepared and ready to go. I think the rest of us or most of us will just be happy to be playing again.” One thing Austin hopes is on point is his driving. Not off the tee, mind you, though that could stand some improvement (he’s 56th in total driving). No, we’re talking about on the road. The Kansas resident and his wife, Shannon, have responded to the pandemic by buying an RV they plan to use almost exclusively for the rest of the season. He says it was her idea and a good one.

“We are gonna drive the rest of the year,” said Austin, a four-time winner on the PGA TOUR and on PGA TOUR Champions. “No hotels, no flying. We’re taking our precautions, but as far as me getting out there and playing and worrying about it … I’m not gonna do that. I certainly don’t want to become a hermit that doesn’t leave his house.” Austin’s biggest concern was the amount of driving, but Shannon took a driving class to get comfortable behind the wheel of their 35-foot Thor A.C.E. 33.1. So they’ll split the driving time, and Austin’s caddie will join them for a couple of the longer drives. “I think we’ll have a blast,”Austin said. “We’re not gonna have to worry about delays or canceled flights or problems with quarantine or planes or hotels. “I think it’s gonna be pretty cool.”

Woods’ design company, TGR Design, and the Pebble Beach Company have announced plans for a reimagined short-course facility at Pebble, which will include a nine-hole par-3 short course, a putting course, and an indoor/outdoor food and beverage venue.
Woods won the 2000 U.S. Open by 15 strokes at Pebble Beach. Earlier that year he overcame a seven-shot deficit in nine holes to beat Matt Gogel at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He has plenty of fond memories there.
“Everyone who plays this golf course is going to enjoy the playability of it,” said Woods, who has 82 career PGA TOUR victories. “Golfers will have the choice to play nearly any club off most tees

Thorbjørn Olesen on tour again
D
ue to the unprecedented delay in court proceedings in the UK caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, and following discussions with his legal team, the European Tour confirmed that the suspension on Danish golfer Thorbjørn Olesen has been lifted. Olesen’s suspension began on Tuesday August 6, 2019 after he was arrested and charged on three counts following an alleged incident on a flight from Nashville to London on Monday July 29, 2019. He has pleaded not guilty to all three charges. It was initially mutually agreed between the European Tour and Olesen that it would be inappropriate for him to continue to participate in Tour events until the conclusion of his trial, which was originally fixed for Monday May 11, 2020. However, all parties have now been informed by the UK courts that, following the disruption caused by the pandemic, Olesen’s trial will

not now take place until Monday December 6, 2021 at the earliest, a total of 854 days from August 6, 2019. Due to this significant and unparalleled delay in the legal process, the European Tour has agreed that his suspension be lifted with immediate effect, allowing him to compete while he continues to contest the case. This will be reviewed following the conclusion of the legal process, but as this is an on-going legal matter the European Tour will be making no further comment at this time. Olesen said: “While my team and I initially agreed that I would not participate in Tour events while the legal proceedings were outstanding, I am naturally grateful to the European Tour for allowing me to continue my career following the lengthy adjournment of my trial. Obviously, the case itself is still on-going so I will continue to make no comment about it.”

he City of San Francisco and the PGA of America have announced that the 2020 PGA Championship, in which two-time defending champion Brooks Koepka aims for a historic three-peat, will be contested without spectators on-site, August 3-9 at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. The decision to play golf’s first men’s major championship of 2020 without spectators was made in coordination with the state of California and city and county of San Francisco, with the health and well-being of all involved as the top priority. The PGA of America will continue to monitor COVID-19 developments and work in concert with the state of California and San Francisco

city and county public health authorities and the Centres for Disease Control & Prevention through Championship Week. Many of golf’s greatest champions, from Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen, Sam Snead, Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan, to Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka, have had their names inscribed on the famed Wanamaker Trophy. In the coming days, those who purchased tickets directly from the PGA of America will be contacted to facilitate refunds. Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries. In South Africa at this time, the TOP CLUB is recognised for exceptional Environmental Compliance and Good Governance. The winner for 2019-2020 is the St Francis Links Golf Club in St Francis Bay in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. What St Francis Links does well is to link the importance of biodiversity in a practical way, and demonstrating the Club is committed to good land stewardship principles and taking positive steps towards addressing biodiversity loss. This includes assessing their relationship with nature and putting in place stronger environmental policies and accountability measures to help drive changes in behaviour

to protect nature and acting now to increase ambition and accountability for its protection. Furthermore, in its small way, the St Francis Links is contributing to the mitigation of the five main drivers of biodiversity loss within the St Francis Links area, these include, land use change, prevention over exploitation of plants and animals, awareness of climate change, the management of pollution and the management of alien invasive species. There is no doubt that It is the appklication of these principles that form part of the club’s ethical foundation which underpins its licence to operate. The John Collier reviewers were really impressed with the work that is being done at St Francis Links Course and it is fitting that on World Environment Day the club should be appropriately recognised. ot to sound melodramatic but just as many remember where they were when the Springbok rugby team won their first World Cup in 95’ (Note to New Zealand - we have won three), I can remember exactly where I was when I received the news that golf courses were reopening after being closed for over two
month due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Having just finished lunch, I was sitting despondently at my desk in our Durban North office when someone we have known for many years (Lali Stander media liaison for GolfRSA) sent through the following email;

We appreciate the challenge presented to government to ensure an appropriate response to the threats presented by the global Corona Virus pandemic. As a result, we sought to ensure compliance with unfolding regulations and directives. Over the past few weeks, GolfRSA has equipped all clubs with Risk Mitigation Strategies and training of Compliance Officers. In addition to this, GolfRSA has provided all facilities with a state-of-the-art Application that allows for the scanning and monitoring of all golfers and staff. Clubs need to complete the Confirmation of Compliance Document and submit it to GolfRSA before they can open their facilities. We put this out on social media and the word spread like wild fire, shortly thereafter we were receiving dozens of calls from the public wanting to know when and where they could tee it up. We would like to thank all those involved for their tireless efforts in what must have been a very exasperating process. Days before this announcement, tempers were beginning to flare and there was talk of clubs taking matters into their own hands. One could understand the frustration and the reopening could not have come soon enough.
I would like to point out that the golf clubs have been under enormous strain and it will take time for them to fully recover (some sadly may not). In light of this, pay your membership fees, adhere to the regulations, be kind and considerate to the staff and most importantly enjoy every minute of your golf. When you curse a bad shot and want to throw your clubs in the water just remember what it felt like to NOT play for two months.

Staysure Tour’s 2020 season cancelled
T
he Staysure Tour, Europe’s professional golf Tour for players aged 50 and older, has announced the cancellation of its 2020 season.
with the age demographic of the Staysure Tour membership, alongside the challenges of implementing the requisite health strategy across the multiple territories we play in.
The decision was taken following consultation with the Tour’s membership and the Tour’s Medical Advisers based on the additional risk associated with the age demographic of the players and the complexities of staging events across multiple territories. It was ratified by the Staysure Tour Tournament Committee following earlier approval by the European Tour Board of Directors and Executive Leadership Team. All 2020 playing exemption categories will be extended to the 2021 season.
“I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Ryan Howsam and Staysure who have been incredibly supportive throughout this process, allowing us to arrive at this difficult decision. We look forward to working together, and with our other partners, across the 2021 season.”
Mark Aspland, Head of the Staysure Tour, said: “This decision was not taken lightly but we feel it is the most responsible course of action following consultation with all of our stakeholders, and taking into account feedback from our players around the complexities of international travel at the current time. “While professional golf is slowly returning with the necessary safety protocols, we have to recognise the additional risk associated

Meticulous Frittelli eyes Major success
W
hen good preparation meets opportunity, success is imminent, so goes an old saying.
Sunshine Tour player, now plying his trade on the PGA Tour in the United States, Dylan Frittelli, knows more about this than, perhaps, most of us. A meticulous planner with attention to every detail of his game, Frittelli has always been a sportsman. As a child, he played soccer and cricket among other sports, with his father his number one hype man. In junior golf, he swiftly moved through to be recognised as his regions best and in no time, he was in the national junior teams. In 2007, he claimed the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships and the following year, the South African Boys’ Championship. College beckoned and he went to the University of Texas, where he won the decisive match to lead his team to victory at the 2012 NCAA Championship. Ever so patient. Ever so meticulous. “I pride myself in getting better every step of the way,” he said, speaking on the Sunshine Tour’s Out of Bounds. “I don’t believe in skipping steps, you have to go through your own process.” His process earned him two Challenge Tour titles, a Sunshine Tour tri-sanctioned title and most recently, his maiden PGA Tour title, the John Deere Classic. “Something needs to take a bit of time,” he says, “there have been tons of guys who became overnight sensations; won once or twice, and then they just didn’t have the staying power. I’ve always prided myself on being meticulous and not rushing things. I think that’s the sustainable way, I don’t know.

Maybe I’m wrong but I like stability in my golf and life in general.” The stability of having full PGA Tour status, thanks to a win, and ability to compete at major international events is what Frittelli has always worked for. From junior to the professional athlete. And now, among the elite in the game on nothing but merit, Frittelli’s next mission is clear. “The majors and the WGC events, that’s where my focus is now,” he says, “the John Deere Classic was huge but the crazy thing is that confidence which came after that. People talk about different stages and levels of a professional athlete’s career and I’m like “hey, I’ve won” and I had that trip to The Open, right after. So, I know the next platform for to me to shine is the majors and the WGCs.” With success on the Sunshine Tour, the Asian Tour, the European and Challenge Tours, and now on the PGA Tour, it is not a ridiculous idea to tout Frittelli as a future winner of major events. And having seen the fruits of his process, doubting its efficiency borders on the ignorant. Be so as it may, when he returns to golf following his positive test for the Covid-19 and is cleared to play, Frittelli will challenge for titles everywhere he plays.

GA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour players will be able to play their way into the field at the 120th U.S. Open at Winged Foot, Sept. 17-20, the United States Golf Association has announced. Not only will top-five finishers in the FedExCup earn spots for Winged Foot, so, too, will the top finishers at select Tour events this summer. There will be 10 spots for Korn Ferry Tour members, too. Oh, and Phil Mickelson, whose tie for second at the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot was perhaps the most agonizing moment of his career, will also be there.

Exemptions for finishes in recent USGA championships, including the U.S. Amateur, U.S. Mid-Amateur, U.S. Junior Amateur and U.S. Senior Open, will remain unchanged, as will exemptions for winners of THE PLAYERS Championship, Masters, Open Championship, PGA Championship, T and BMW PGA Championship. Remaining spots in the championship will be filled using the OWGR, as of Aug. 23.

s we are always striving to raise the bar on turf maintenance is it fantastic when new tools come onto the market.
I have been blown away by the results on cool & warm season turf. Pigments are definitely a very important part of increased turf health.
Pigments have been widely used in the USA for the past few years.
This wonderful tool has a few key functions
Dr. Dannenberger from Ohio State University was quite right when he told me these would be game changers in turf maintenance.
A. To increase the cold tolerance of turf from April to August/September on warm season turf e.g. Bermuda, Paspalum, Kikuyu. It is best to start these applications prior to the first frost, however it is never too late to start – you can also spray dormant turf. B. Heat tolerance of plants is greatly increased with pigments. UV rays are very harmful to turf & this protection makes a noticeable difference to the plant health. C. Improve the efficacy of fungicides by 20-25%. D. Speed up seed germination.

Why becoming a dad improves your game whom fatherhood seemed to have been a springboard. His first son, Jack II, was born in September of 1961. Of course, the elder Nicklaus already was a can’t-miss star, but he also already was a father at the age of just 22 when he prevailed at the U.S. Open in 1962. It was his first career PGA Tour victory and one of three that season.

atherhood changes a man. It should. It’s supposed to. Yet, for all of the unprecedented emotion and intimacy the father feels because of and for his newborn child, it takes time for the evidence to emerge. If it is noticeable right away, it’s in contrast to what has been known about the man ahead of it. Too rapid, and a cynic -- even the man himself -- could question it. But what if it could be measured quantitatively? It’s possible for professional golfers and there’s been a theory linked to it for nearly 25 years. Call it the Diaper Dimension. In “The Golf Form Book 1996,” Keith Elliott cites numerous circumstances of athletes in multiple sports who benefited from the Diaper Dimension. Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, Nick Price, Steve Elkington and Larry Mize were among those listed, and they represent notables only on the PGA Tour dating back generations. Jack Nicklaus also was included in Elliott’s original grouping of U.S.-based golfers for

Despite his promise, the 18-time major champion-in-the-making hadn’t yet developed the kind of grit that seasoned competitors require to understand how to win and keep winning. It’d come in time and as he and his wife, Barbara, kept having kids – five to be exact – the patriarch was on his way to 73 career titles. Those things do happen. When you’re on a high, I think when your mind’s not fully on golf, it might work in your favour.” “It’s happened to other players, hasn’t it? So, why can’t it happen to me?” Fleetwood finished T25 that week, but he went on to win the Race to Dubai in November and joined the PGA Tour that fall.
