what is one of the premier tournaments in world golf. I’m a proud winner on all three Tours and look forward to playing in Johannesburg again,” said Oosthuizen.

At the launch of the R16.5 million (approximately US$1.2 million) tournament at Soweto CC last month, Sunshine Tour Executive Director Selwyn Nathan announced that the Joburg Open will be played at Randpark GC over two courses from 7-10 December and will be sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour, European Tour and Asian Tour.

The tournament will once again form part of the Open Championship’s The Open Qualifying Series, offering three spots into the Major for the leading three finishers in the top 10 who are not already exempt.

Royal Johannesburg and Kensington GC, the traditional home of the tournament, is undergoing extensive upgrades to its East Course. Former Open champion Louis Oosthuizen has also confirmed that he will play in the Joburg Open as it marks a new era in its history. “I’m very excited to be supporting the growth of

The Joburg Open will also be the penultimate event on the Asian Tour schedule and will be crucial in the race for the Order of Merit title. “This is an exciting time for the growth of the Joburg Open and we welcome our new partners, the Asian Tour, in this endeavor,” said Nathan. The field for this December’s Joburg Open will be 240 professionals, including 30 Asian Tour members, four amateur invites, and then the remainder to be shared between the European Tour and Sunshine Tour.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader.

To the Editor

Golf is a strange game isn’t it? It can transform the coolest person into an anxious wreck in the space of only a couple of shots. As everyone knows, golf is a much easier game when nobody is watching you. When you are on your own everything just feels right, your confidence is there and your breathing is even. However this all changes, of course, as soon as somebody starts watching you. Unexpectedly, your grip tightens up, your feet start moving, and your breathing virtually stops. When this occurs, you need to step back and remember to keep breathing. Playing good, consistent golf has a lot to do with your ability to remain calm and relaxed. When you begin to feel your heart beating at a rate of knots, you need to take some deep breaths to slow it down. Correct breathing can alleviate all kinds of issues (in golf and life). We all experience stress both on and off the golf course. When this ensues, it is important to focus on your breathing to calm yourself down. Once your heart begins to beat at a normal rate, you feel more relaxed, and you find yourself able to focus again on the task at hand.

something. For children, this could be having to give a speech in front of a class. For adults, this could be presenting a report to your boss. For golfers, this would be standing on the first tee with everybody watching you from the club house balcony. Remember to take a step back and take a deep breath, it works wonders! Regards Leroy Swart

Dear Leroy Thank you for your letter and your sage advice. So often we work ourselves into a state of anxiety over the smallest of things. We need to as you say “take a step back and take a deep breath” and I would add that we also need to put things in perspective. Go out there and enjoy your golf, enjoy life & don’t forget to smell the roses. Regards

From a young age, we were taught to take a deep breath when we are anxious about

Dane Vosloo - PGA Professional Prince’s Grant Golf Estate 1. 2.

When did you qualify as a PGA Professional ? I qualified in 2014 What made you choose this career ? I have always been a sporty person but I grew up in a small town where the only thing I knew about golf was being a tour player. It was later in life when I moved to Durban and started getting coaching that I found out there was more to the game and my coach Alf Hopf said to me I should maybe look at doing my PGA.

6.

Has it always been golf for you ? I would say I was a typical little boy growing up who always wanted to play a sport for a living but only really found golf later on around 16. Did you ever play or did you ever want to play on tour ? I think anyone who ever picked up a club wanted to play on tour and be a trend setter. I have been to Q-school twice but never managed to get through. Describe a typical work day for a PGA Club Professional. A day in the life of a PGA Pro could mean so many things! You could find yourself out side running around making sure everyone is having a great day or helping members with a few lessons. Then you could end up behind a desk and catching up with all the paper work. As much as we try and plan our days they can change in the blink of an eye or a phone call. You have only recently moved to Prince’s Grant Golf Estate from Durban CC, what have been the main differences you have picked up on so far? Its my 1st time working on a golf estate so there are some things that stand out. The members here are more like a big family everyone knows everyone and you can see it when they all come together for drinks after a round or just a club function. Where at DCC you have the members forming schools and almost losing

the social aspect of everyone coming together at the club. What are the challenges at a golf club like Prince’s Grant Golf Estate that is a little further away from a large main town and that might not be so busy ? You have your challenges but you also have your advantages as well. During the week days you are a little quieter as you don’t have the walk in golfers and people book more over weekends. But something I have found is that our weekend is more Friday and Saturday then the normal Saturday Sunday as we have schools and groups booking a Friday round and Saturday morning then leaving on either the Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning. The members of a golf club always come first. Do you agree with the phrase “The member is always right”? Yes and No. It all depends on the situation that you find yourself but something I work hard on with my staff is the way they treat members and visitors as being at an estate you see the same members a lot and it’s easy to slip into relax mode. We strive to make sure that weather you a member or visitor the service you get will be of the highest standard. Slow play is one of the biggest problems in golf today, how do you manage slow play at Prince’s Grant Golf Estate. ? I myself actually spend a lot of time out there on busy days and Saturdays marshalling the fields. But something I have found that works is making sure that

golfers have references to the pace of play and check points that they can check themselves during a round this has helped with the marshalling as they can see if they falling behind or not. Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life ? Yes I work a lot of weekends and holidays as those are the busy days but my wife also knew how my life worked before we got married and she has also spent a little time working in the industry so she understands. What are your short & long term goals? I don’t really set goals for my life as it can change at the blink of an eye. I have more of a life plan but those changes as well. I see so many people set goals and then they fail them and the word comes to an end instead of seeing it as the next stepping stone or a sign to move a different path. I love my job and my plan is to be doing it for a while and learning and growing myself while I do what I love. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? What is free time? HAHAHA don’t get much of that. My wife Simone’ and I are homely people so on a day off we try and do as little as possible and just enjoy the time at home. Maybe get out the PS3 or just some movies on Netflex. Maybe even get out to a local coffee shop. Can’t beat a good cup of coffee!! Do you still get time to play ? Lately I have been able to play a little more with the members here at PG. I might get 2 or 3 rounds a month in with one of those being a pro-am. I still love the competitive environment so try and make sure I can get to the monthly Pro Am.

The Importance of Setup

E

very golfer aspires to improve their game, they wish to have the confidence to tee it up, just swing the club and watch the ball will fly true and towards their intended target; however, golfers tend to go out day after day replaying the same mistakes repeatedly which results in frustration and an unpleasant day. It is essential for golfers to focus and improve their fundamentals as this will improve their scores and ultimately make their rounds more enjoyable.

Christopher Wright TGSE Coach POSTURE

The setup, I believe, is one of the most important swing fundamentals as this affects three major factors in the swing; balance, distance and direction. Balance Balance is vital throughout the swing as it allows the golfer to strike the ball on the centre of the clubface resulting in more consistent shots both in direction, trajectory and distance. To achieve proper balance the golfer must ensure he has the correct foot placements and posture as this will give him a greater chance in maintaining his balance from address to the end of the swing. What is the proper foot placement and posture? Foot Placement Feet should be shoulder width apart, having the outside of your shoulder line up with the inside of your heels for mid irons, short iron will be 2 inches narrower and driver 2 inches wider than the mid irons. Toes should be lightly turned outwards to improve natural hip rotation in the swing.

12

Weight should be distributed to the balls of your feet this will help maintain balance throughout the swing. Knees should be bent towards the balls of your feet as this too will improve balance. The spine is the axis of your rotation, the spine should be tilted from the hips towards the ball allowing the arms to hang naturally. This will help the club, arms and body move on the correct plan. Applying the above will get the body into a more athletic position and achieve better muscle readiness to execute the shot.

tuition & instruction Direction Body alignment and ball position greatly influence both path and angle at which the club travels in the swing. Having correct ball position will encourage the club face to be squarer at impact resulting in straighter shots, it will also promote a better angle of attack at the ball increasing strike, trajectory and distance. Having proper body alignment and body angles will allow the golfer to swing the club on a straighter swing path; thus, improving starting line, reducing the curvature applied to the ball and resulting in straighter shots. It will also improve the angle at which the club attacks the ball reducing the chance of hitting fat and thin shots.

all components lining up, giving the golfer the best opportunity to reduce curvature on the ball resulting in a straighter shot. Distance Having proper setup will ensure the golfer will be able to rotate their body and transfer their weight correctly in the swing resulting in more distance. If the player fails to transfer his weight correctly it will hinder his ability to generate swing speed resulting in a loss of distance. The player should ensure his feet placement is at the correct width regarding his club he has selected. In the image we are using a (mid iron) Too narrow a stance the player won’t have a stable foundation resulting in a slower swing speed

What is the correct body alignment and ball position? Ball Position The ball position varies on the club you select, the shorter the club the more centred the ball should be placed in your stance as shorter clubs have a more upright lie angle, this requires the club to be swung at a steeper angle of attack. This will encourage hitting down on the ball ensuring the ball is struck first as the divot follows. Mid irons should be placed one ball left of centre, as the lie angle is slightly flatter it requires a shallower angle of attack, causing a shallower divot. With longer irons the ball should be placed 2 balls left of centre, as impact should occur at the bottom of the swing arc which results in taking very little divot. Driver should be placed inside the left foot or in line with the left heel, this will encourage hitting the ball on the upswing.

due to golfer trying to maintain their balance. Too wide and the player won’t be able to rotate correctly though the swing and the golfer will be unable to have correct weight transfer which will reducing their swing speeds and overall Body alignment distance. Feet, knees, hips, shoulders, forearms and eyes In conclusion, golf is made up of different moving should run parallel to the components. If the setup is done correctly it target line. As a visual allows these movements to flow in the propaid think of train tracks er manner, giving the golfer an advantage of and how they run parallel obtaining a good impact position. Ultimately, we to each other. This will want the golfer to pre-set themselves into the encourage a straighter positions to encourage effective movement and swing path due to the to achieve a solid impact.

Golf Club

management

(A day in Golf course Superintendent’s shoes)

A

fter focusing my last two articles on Golf course management and explaining how complex the superintendent’s responsibilities are, I decided to close off the year with a break down on what an average day is like in the shoes of some of S. A`s top Golf Course Superintendents. Since my background comes from Golf Course Management, I am aware that the jobs responsibilities are certainly a grey area for many of us that play golf. The famous Alister Mackenzie said that “The Chief objective of an architect or Greenkeeper worth his salt is to imitate the beauties of nature so closely as to make his work indistinguishable from nature itself”. To create the “beauty” as Alister quoted, I spent some time with an old friend (due to contractual reasons I can’t mention his name or club he works for but let’s call him “John”) who has been nominated in the past as Superintendent of the year at his respective course and I also contacted Carel Buitendach at Irene Country Club, who has well over 10 years’ experience in the industry, to give us an idea of their detailed, daily responsibilities.

20

by Henk Buitendach, Thatchfield Golf Club

Asking “John”, who has been in the industry for nearly 20 years, to sum up the responsibilities of a Golf Course Superintendent and the intensity thereof, he said that a Superintendent’s knowledge of the industry and the job itself, is key to establishing and providing a product that is visually satisfying to the eye and physically enjoyable to any level of golfer. He mentioned that the programs and managing tools used are fundamental to running and maintaining an effective work environment of any high standard. However, in order to achieve this, he says the difference between an average or exceptional course, is without any doubt KNOWLEDGE. He summed it up beautifully, “Without a decent amount of experience/knowledge the responsibilities of a Superintendent will be unmanageable. If you don’t have knowledge of what the responsibilities are, or what is expected on your course, you won’t have programs and tools in place to manage any given situation. When programs are not in place or the correct ones as a matter of fact, you will be sitting with an unhappy client.” His course is without a doubt an excellent reflection of how this can be achieved.

November | December 2017

S pecial F eature – G olf course & club management Asking “John” to give me a breakdown on his average day of responsibilities at the club he gave me the following info:

Carel, who is at a more traditional parkland course, emphasised the fact that this job is not for the average individual because of the pressure that comes with the responsibilities. Apart from needing the knowledge to be able to do the job, as “John” explained so well, Carel explains that gaining all the knowledge does not come merely from text books, but rather in a DIY Approach. “How can you delegate and manage your own facility if you have not mastered the skill by doing it yourself” he said. He further explained that it is here, where you

November | December 2017

are required to gain experience in manual labour yourself, which lots of students decide to choose another career and move on. “Passion is an overused word with the youth these days. It certainly sounds nice when going for that job interview, but when it comes to the daily hard-grind required for years to come, while waiting to move up the ranks, passion easily flies out the window ” So REAL PASSION, and a lot of commitment towards the site is imperative. The passion Carel was talking about was definitely evident after spending some time with him and

www.sagolftrader.co.za

S pecial F eature – G olf course & club management Carel gave me a run down on his average day:

12h00-14h00

2h00 -15h30/16h00

this reflected immensely on his course. Both of these individuals gave me their responsibilities only in a nutshell, the task is most certainly a lot more detailed as it stands here. I would also like to mention that what stood out for me was how similar their daily responsibilities are. As if the responsibilities, and their daily structures, are indicative of their level of knowledge keeping into consideration it is two completely different courses. A very bold statement, but one I believe, yes. To conclude the final article, my objective throughout the year has been to shed a bit more light on how effective courses are being managed. Focusing on water, all the way through to club structures, the history of

22

golf and “green keeping”, to what it entails to manage and run a course successfully. It was not just a privilege to write these articles, but more so an opportunity to touch on what this beautiful industry is all about. I have hopefully given you, the reader or golfer, more knowledge and insight as to what is happening in this great industry of ours. We the golfing industry thank you, the golf enthusiast for your loyal support, that always come back for more and always go the extra mile for your club.

Keep on swinging those clubs and happy golfing….

And that’s when the real work of the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) begins. Wafeeq was one of a group of children from the Southern Cape Chapter of the SAGDB who attended a golf clinic at the Sunshine Tour’s Vodacom Origins of Golf at the Simola Golf and Country Estate recently.

The value of these clinics has been shown in the countless examples of young golfers from impoverished communities – in this case Riversdale, Heidelberg and George – who benefit from the instruction they receive from the Sunshine Tour professionals.

The Paraguayan golfer hit a perfect seven iron to make the first hole-in-one in Nedbank Golf Challenge history. “The layout of the fourth hole is water in front of the green. If you miss the green right you’re really in great difficulty. The wind comes through that little valley there which always makes it more difficult. It’s hard to read the wind. It has a great effect on the shot. But from a high, elevated tee, the shot goes higher, so it stops quicker. So one is inclined to attack that pin,” explains Player. The Grand Slam champion’s next choice is Tiger Woods’s chip in on the 18th green in 1998 to force a playoff with Nick Price.

32

“First of all, you can imagine the pressure for Tiger to chip in on the 18th hole, to win a million dollars. What a dynamic golfer. He’s so focused and confident over that chip. Think about Nick Price standing there and watching this. He’s thinking, ‘This man’s going to chip in the hole’. I’m telling you. You could hear that roar. It made for a phenomenal tournament. That was really a stroke of genius, at the right time.” Player’s next stroke of genius was Thomas Bjørn’s final-round eagle on the par-five 14th on his way to victory in 2013. “The risk when you stand at number 14 – it’s do or die. The way the stage was set, he’s only going to win by one shot. In other words, he’s not going to win unless he does it. So you can’t play safe at that stage. If you look at where the pin was – it’s a tiny little green. And he’s probably roughly 260 yards from the flag. Now that ball could very well have stuck in the love grass. But he hits it in the right spot and it goes through the kikuyu fringe, onto the green about 10 or 12 feet from the hole and he holes the

putt. He goes on to win by two shots.” Jim Furyk’s first Nedbank Golf Challenge victory in 2005 is also on Player’s list. The American was involved in a four-man playoff with Darren Clarke, Adam Scott and Retief Goosen, and then chipped in on the second playoff hole – the par-four 18th – to win.

the rough is very penal. Patricularly the trees. It’s essential to have a plan because your plan gives you confidence. Stenson realised that you keep the ball in play. He hits the ball very high, particulary with his three wood which he also hits as far as most people do their driver. He always used that club because that was his confident club,” said Player.

“You’ve got a four-man playoff on one hole to decide the event. There’s only one thought – you have to birdie the hole. You’ve only got one chance. Isn’t it amazing that the man who doesn’t hit the green and is worse off, going straight downhill, chips it in the hole. There is the stroke of genius.” And finally, Player lists Henrik Stenson’s 2008 victory by nine strokes as his final greatest performance. That week, Stenson never used his driver once and relied heavily on his three wood in one of the most strategic victories ever witnessed in the tournament. “One thing about the Gary Player Country Club,

Odwa Ndungane,

South African Rugby Legend.

1.

Where were you born and which schools did you attend? I was born in Mthatha, went to St Patrick’s junior school and Hudson park High school.

5.

What was your best moment on a rugby field? It is very difficult to single out one moment as there are far too many, but winning the trophy is up there at the top.

2.

You played a lot of rugby for the Sharks but which province did you first represent? Border Bulldogs.

6.

To put you on the spot, who is the greatest wing to ever have played the game? Jonah Lomu was a beast.

3.

When you first ran out for the Border Bulldogs 7. in 2000 did you ever think you would retire a seasoned professional after 17 years with 321 first class matches? It started off with a dream of being a professional rugby player, I had never thought I would be 8. blessed with so many great years playing top level rugby.

4.

34

You played at fullback, and wing, what was your favourite position? I started playing fullback late in my career and I must say I really enjoyed it.

What do you make of the new rules that have come into the game, is rugby becoming overreffed? Most of the new rules I agree with because they improve the safety of the players. A try in your final game, in a Currie cup final, but unfortunately no win, must have been bitter sweet? I couldn’t have dreamt of a better start to the final, it was an incredible feeling. Losing in the end was very disappointing, but I am sure that the team will have many more opportunities to win the Currie Cup.

entral Gauteng produced an unparalleled performance over the first four rounds at Oubaai Golf Resort and Spa to secure the South African Mid-Amateur Inter-Provincial title for a fourth time last month. With the victory, the mid-amateur team also completed a Grand Slam of SA Inter-Provincial titles for the Lions. “This is an incredible moment for the whole team,” said manager Jaco du Plessis. “Our juniors won last year, our seniors and premier teams both won this year and now this incredible league of gentlemen completed the cycle for Central Gauteng. “I think only the past winners of this tournament can understand the pride we share as a team right now. It was incredibly cold and the wind was really strong. We knew the final round would be a real battle of attrition. Our guys knew what was required and they went out there and got us the crucial points in some tightly contested skirmishes.” “Throughout the week, everyone on the team had a moment where they need to perform and they all delivered a champions’ performance,” said Du Plessis. “We set our combinations before we arrived and that added to the sense of continuity and, as much as golf is an individual game, our team spirit was phenomenal and definitely a huge factor in our victory.

North West’s victory over Boland and a draw against Ekurhuleni secured the side sixth place, which means Boland got the wooden spoon 12 months after winning the battle for promotion at Rustenburg Golf Club..

All-Africa champions elated and humbled

K

waZulu-Natal trio Malcolm Mitchell, Clayton Mansfield and Matt Saulez and Garrick Higgo from Boland successfully defended South Africa’s title in the All Africa Golf Team Championship last month, but the quartet left in Zimbabwe with much more than a trophy. The team headed into the final round at Elephant Hills GC with a 22 shot lead and posted a team total of 209 to win the title for an eighth successive time by 30 strokes on 845. Mitchell also won the Individual Competition on 12-under-par 276 with rounds of 67, 68, 73 and 68, while Higgo, Mansfield and Saulez finished fourth, fifth and eighth respectively. Mitchell described the event a real eye-opener. “It was the first time Matt and I wore the green and gold outside South Africa’s borders and the first time Garrick and Clayton played for South Africa as seniors,” Mitchell said. “We were obviously keen to continue South Africa’s proud record and we were elated with the result, but on the trip home this past weekend we reflected on just how privileged we are as South Africans. Saulez, who will be travelling with Mitchell to Argentina in November to represent South Africa in the Juan Carlos Tailhade Cup and the Argentine Amateur Open, added that the competing against

60

the other African nations put things into a different perspective for the team. “Like Malcolm said, I don’t think any of us realised just how privileged we are until it stared us right in the face,” he said. “I think that is why we all enjoyed hosting a golf development clinic for little juniors from a nearby school. It was an hour out of our lives, and a small thing really when you think about it, but to see the excitement on their faces was humbling. It was incredibly gratifying to teach them and to give back, even just a little, to the game that gives us so much.”

Full marks for Ferdie at SA Senior Amateur

W

hen asked about his highlights of the Fellowship Cup, Matt Saulez didn’t talk mention his debut or South Africa’s roaring 26 – 6 victory. Instead, Saulez talked about friendships forged with the Indian competitors and the chance to run shoulders with the rest of the GolfRSA squad during the three-day Test at Leopard Creek.

Unheralded Ferdie van der Merwe sealed a sensational maiden victory when he clinched the SA Senior Amateur Championship title in dramatic fashion at Hermanus GC last month. The 51-year-old from Wellington stunned the field when he shot into contention with successive rounds of 72 in his debut on the senior amateur national circuit. Not surprisingly, the ‘rookie’ earned overwhelming applause after he defeated reigning Players champion Andre van Dyk at the first extra hole of a sudden-death play-off. “I feel 10 feet tall,” said the beaming Van der Merwe. “I’ve won more than 50 titles in club opens or Boland Golf Union events, but this is such a special moment. “I’ve hit the ball so well all week, but the putts refused to drop. It was frustrating, but I had my partner Cornel (de Jager) on the bag and she kept me calm and confident that the putter would warm up. I holed a short one for birdie at 12, but it took another seven holes before it warmed up again. “That last putt wasn’t very long – maybe six feet – but it rolled on the perfect line all the way and when

it dropped, I almost couldn’t believe it. You know, I nearly didn’t even enter. They told me I had to enter online and I couldn’t figure it out, so if it wasn’t for Mariette at Boland Golf Union, I wouldn’t even have been here this week. “I’ve played Hermanus just twice in the last 18 years. We had to endure three club winds in all three rounds and this week was a real test of patience, but what a fantastic test of golf. To beat some of the legends of the game and to win on the senior circuit has been a dream, but now it’s a reality. I am sure this is how David felt when he knocked down Goliath.” Le Roux closed with a 75 to finish third on 223 in a tie with Watson, who signed for 82.

angebaan Country Estate celebrated the launch of their new driving range clubhouse on 2 September 2017. The new facility complements the Langebaan Country Estate’s 18-hole Gary Player designed golf course. The resort’s Head Golf Professional, Max Birkenhead, says, “I reckon this is the only facility of its kind in South Africa. We have three tiers of grass bays for up to 60 golfers hitting out to our 270m long-grass range. The tees here are all grass, cut three times a week to the fairway length of our main course. There are also two indoor bays for

coaching and fitting using Flightscope, which allows me to scientifically evaluate swing technique and provide a fuller teaching experience. And if the weather changes for the worse we simply close the doors and continue in comfort away from the elements, we’ve definitely got the best of all worlds,” Max enthuses. “There’s also a great short game area with bunkers to hone your skills, and a purpose-built putting green is in the process of being constructed.” The Langebaan Country Estate driving range (along with many other facilities at the resort) is open to the public.

is the Golfer from the past?

Our mystery golfer was born on the 8th of May 1893 and is frequently referred to as the “father of amateur golf” in the United States. He won the 1913 U.S. Open in a playoff with Harry Vardon & Ted Ray. The biggest crowds ever seen in American golf at the time followed the playoff. His U.S. Open success is credited for bringing golf into the American sporting mainstream. He never turned professional and he decided before his U.S. Open success that he wanted to work in the world of business. However in a highly controversial decision the USGA stripped him of his amateur status, reasoning that he was using his celebrity standing to aid his own sporting goods business and was therefore making a living from golf. In 1918, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and rose to the rank of lieutenant. After the war, the USGA quietly reinstated his amateur status. He won the U.S. Amateur twice & in 1951 became the first non-Briton elected Captain of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club. He mentored and encouraged Gene Sarazen at a young age. A Street in Greenside, Johannesburg close to the Parkview Golf Course is named after him. He died on September 2nd, 1967, at the age of 74. Answer on page 80
