LE T TER TO THE EDITOR

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader. To the editor After watching Lee Westwood win his third Race to Dubai just a few months short of his 48th birthday, it made me reflect on what a spectacular career he has had and quite frankly the fact that he has not won a major means naught. He has wins covering four decades; he has been world number one, played in 10 Ryder Cups (having been on the winning side in 7 of them). He displays an enthusiasm for the game that is second to none and his longevity in the game is something to be admired.

Dear Richard Thanks for writing in. I could not agree more and I think that it is entirely feasible that he could in the next couple of years win a major and make history as the oldest player to have done so. (He has to date had fourteen top-ten finishes in majors). A family man, a gentleman and a fantastic ambassador for the sport. Regards

He has always possessed a maturity beyond his years and it was a joy to watch him claim his third Race to Dubai crown, after all this is the gold standard for consistency on the European Tour. Regards Richard Hicks

Strategy to playing Summer Golf: the lie of your ball

S

eeing how beautifully green our golf courses have become is an inspiration, how nature flourishes, with all the rain that has fallen. Receiving this rain with enormous gratitude, it comes with many challenges for golfers, as the growth of the grass on the course is accelerated, creating a completely different challenge to other seasonal conditions, as your shot off the tee would naturally not travel as far as you are accustomed to, in the dryer seasons, due to the moisture filled fairways, thicker first and second cuts, reducing the roll, affecting your total distance, and strategy, to approach the lay-up area or green. There are many variances playing in this seasonal condition that we need to take into consideration when planning on beating your personal best, planning your shots is vital, it starts with playing to your strengths. Playing to your strengths is key, we see students completely lose their rhythm and

6

tempo through the round, fearful of striking their ball towards the rough off the tee, dreading a terrible lie, or at worst, a lost ball, costing to many penalty shots on one hole! Play with what you have at that moment. We often see golfers shaping the ball, and unfortunately not using the shape to their advantage, to hit the fairway, but finishing off-line to the right or left, into the first or second cut. This can lead to numerous challenges. A simple solution is to use the shape you mainly play or are most comfortable with. Plan for the shape in your pre-shot routine, according to the layout of the hole, pick your target and strike it at a starting line that you feel comfortable with, from the right or left side of the tee box, towards the right or left side of the fairway, and allow your shape to keep you in the fairway. It is better to shape the ball into the fairway, in this instance, than to try and play a straighter ball flight that looks good, that you may not be experienced or skilled enough with

TUITION & INSTRUCTION just yet. Causing a miss in intended direction, opening up a mystery box of situations that you could be presented with, in turn making it difficult to achieve what you have set out to. CHALLENGES THAT YOU MAY ENCOUNTER WHEN MISSING THE FAIRWAY: 1. Different height lies in the first and second cut. 2. Struggling to find the ball in the second cut. 3. Ball lying deeply in the second cut. 4. Mud ball or water on the ball in moister conditions.

SOLUTIONS: 1. Assess the lie of the ball, do not generalise a shot out of the rough, your best strength here is your eyes and decision making, if the ball is lying right on top of the grass, try to grip the club lower than usual, judge this on a situational basis according to how much higher the ball is above your feet, take into account that the club travels shorter, the shorter you grip it, making a club selection relative to the situation. A practice swing with a brushing sensation through the blades of the grass could assist you with your choice of placement of your hands on the grip. Which would in turn assist you to strike the middle of the club, instead of high on the face, interfering with your plans of hitting the green. 2. The best way to find your ball is to make sure that you watch the ball until it comes to rest and mark it with an object like a tree or bunker close by, walk on that line nearer to the direction that you have marked it on, it is completely normal to ask for assistance from your playing partners. 3. In the opposite situation to the higher lie, when the ball is buried in the grass, prioritise striking the ball with a shorter club to stay in

January | February 2021

control of your lowest point of impact, and rather reach a landing zone that you could pitch towards the green, from a cleaner lie. Instead of hacking out a longer iron that is instinctively chosen based on the distance to the target, a shorter iron would naturally swing steeper allowing a greater chance of striking the ball cleaner than a longer iron would, allow for damage control, a good lay-up strike can turn things around for you. If you plan on attacking the green and feel confident in your approach, take into consideration that the ball will travel shorter but may not have the intended launch angle affecting your spin rate, the ball will definitely roll out more than it usually does from a clean lie. 4. In moister conditions, the ball could have collected some mud at impact with the ground, this can make the ball fall to the right or left of the intended target, and a wet ball would not travel as far, choose your club and starting line wisely for your intended landing zone. Thank you for taking the time to read our article, we trust that we have given you some useful tools to go from strength to strength. Good luck in your pursuit of your personal best score. May 2021 be filled with many birdies and wonderful experiences on the course. If you have any questions regarding your technique or course strategy, we will be delighted to assist you with an assessment or playing lesson at the wonderful Woodhill Residential Estate & Country Club. The resurgence of

t the end of November 2020, Louis and I travelled again, for the first time since February 2020. Normally we traverse the country during the year highlighting the goings on at our many, many amazing golf courses. However, as was the case with everyone, COVID-19 brought all travel plans to a complete standstill.

It was lovely to be on the road again and we concentrated our efforts on the golf courses and equipment suppliers in the Gauteng region. There was no particular reason that we chose to pick up again in Gauteng other than the fact that we had not seen the courses and suppliers there for some time. It was with some trepidation that we began our journey, after all the golf industry had been through a torrid time during lockdown and golf courses were only opened up again after the diligent efforts of GolfRSA and some other wonderful people. It did not take us long to see that golf has rebounded in spectacular fashion, whilst adhering to all protocols, the amount of people playing golf was simply astounding. Every golf course that we spoke to, told of increased numbers in rounds and memberships. The suppliers that we saw waxed lyrical about increased sales and youngsters turning to golf, as they start to see the benefits of the game. All in all it was the most positive experience and whilst one feels sympathy for sporting codes that are faring less well, it paints a very good picture for the game of golf going forward.

THIRTEENTH ANNUAL

John Collier Survey BEING GRATEFUL THAT 2020 IS OVER

L

ooking back, I think we would all agree that we are grateful that 2020 has gone. We grieve with those who have experienced loss of a loved one and we acknowledge how 2020 brought loss of various kinds; health, economic, financial, hope, memories, experiences, jobs, travel, loss of the usual, loss of certainty and loss of the rhythm of life. Despite this, we should be eternally grateful that we have got to this point, and considering all the lows of 2020, we should be filled with immense gratitude. Notwithstanding the lows and the negative health impacts of Covid 19, many golfers have realised the positive health impacts of this great game. It gets you out into the fresh air, into the sunshine, it has a role in preventing chronic disease such as heart disease and diabetes, and has psychological benefits such as improving mood, reducing anxiety and increased confidence. In support of this, recent published evidence indicates that record number of rounds have been registered

and the number of active golfers has increased. This surely must be good news for the golf industry. From a governance and regulatory perspective, notwithstanding the lock down regulations of the Covid 19 pandemic, it is interesting to observe how much subordinate legislation was promulgated during 2020 which will impact upon golf clubs in the years to come. This will be discussed in the forthcoming 14th edition of the John Collier Annual Survey to be published in March 2021. In conclusion, to the South African golfing family, the PGA of SA, GolfRSA, the Provincial Unions, Golf Clubs, their management, and staff and last but not least all golfers, stay safe, stay healthy and best wishes for a prosperous and productive 2021! ohn Collier Golf is a boutique governance and environmental consultancy that provides audit, advisory and research services for the South African golf industry. John Collier Golf publishes the John Collier Survey on Governance and Environmental Compliance for South African Golf Course annually, providing the only governance and environmental compliance bench marking data for the South African Golf industry. Principle 13 in the KingIVTM Report on Corporate Governance for South Africa states that; “the governing body should govern compliance with applicable laws and

adopted, non-binding rules, codes and standards in a way that supports the organisation, such as golf clubs, being ethical and a good corporate citizen”. In this regard the John Collier Annual Survey illustrates just how much legislation has been promulgated regarding biodiversity. The knowledge of applicable biodiversity laws and their implementation is central to the sustainability of a golf club. There are many clubs throughout South Africa which are doing amazing things regarding biodiversity, but biodiversity loss and the degradation of its contributions to our planet’s well-being continues. The COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the importance of the relationship between people and nature. We are reminded that when

we destroy and degrade biodiversity, we undermine the web of life and increase the risk of disease spill-over from wildlife to people. Responses to the pandemic provide a unique opportunity for transformative change, as an investment in the health, at the local level of the golf club, and in our planet, while also being an investment in our own future. The United Nations recently reported global data showing that two in five of the world’s plant species are at risk of extinction because of the destruction of the natural world. Seventy five percent of the Earth’s land surface has been significantly altered by human actions, including for example the loss of eighty-five percent of wetlands’ areas. At the same time, sixty six percent of the ocean area is experiencing multiple impacts from human activity, including commercial fishing, pollution, and chemical changes from acidification. There is a view that we are losing a race against time as we are probably losing species faster than we can find and name them.

needed by everyone. This includes golf clubs and in participating they will emphasise their status as being good corporate citizens. One action golf club management could take is to go back to basics and implement a biodiversity policy and procedure. In this regard recent research published in the John Collier Annual Survey indicates a twenty five percent compliance level by golf courses in respect of having a biodiversity policy and programs in place. Alistair John Collier is the CEO of the John Collier Survey, he holds a master of laws in environmental law from Wits University and practiced as an advocate specialising in the fields of social security and environmental law. COVID-19 NEVER STOOD A CHANCE

Henk Buitendach GM Thatchfield GC, Chairperson TGMA

T

he year 2020. What a perfectly rounded number. It had to be good right?

Because let us be honest, the last time we experienced such a profound milestone (the year 2000 ring any bells), we expected the Y2K, also known as the millennium bug, to wreak havoc on our computerized systems and networks around the world. Yet the year 2000 provided no disasters or surprises, except maybe for the fact that I met my wife and decided to sport poorly executed blonde highlights, life quite simply carried on. So, blissfully unaware, absolutely no-one expected that 2020 would throw us such a curveball? Yet this was the year that a bug decided to hop off a bat and go on an around-the-world-in-30-days’ vacation. For those without families, the idea of a 3-week lockdown was going to be great. A forced holiday so to say: binge watching Netflix, unlimited computer games, sleeping late and not feeling guilty about not swiping your gym card. For those of us with children, and with pregnant wives in their third trimester, well…. I am still traumatised about it all, so I would just rather not elaborate. Once the lockdown was extended by another two weeks, things got more serious. We started seeing job losses and salary cuts. For some arbitrary reason, the stress and

26

anxiety levels forced some into buying toilet paper and baked beans in hospitality quantities. Others decided to pay 10 times the price for illegal liquor and cigarettes, all as an attempt to restore sanity! I will also mention that my wife is most certainly not the blonde I always thought she was. What happened to the world we used to know? GOLF Lockdown has been exceptionally hard on our economy, and there is no need to devote much time to that topic. However, let`s talk about golf in specific? A chicken without its head, running mad, is exactly the way I felt when word first got out of a hard lockdown. The initial 3 weeks were tough, but the stress was compounded when 2 more weeks were added and we realised that no-one would be back at our facility- possibly until level 2, whenever that was supposed to be? How would I deal with it all? How was I going to ensure a healthy, sustainable business, that could still provide job security for my long-term staff, and still present a golf club in decent shape when golf was to return. The myriad of questions, attempting to interpret the ever-changing government gazette, and then figuring out how I would incorporate and implement changes to our operations, had me confounded to sleepless nights. More clarity and direction were needed, and I was desperately searching for answers. Its almost like the situation called for a superhero to step up and be the voice

www.sagolftrader.co.za

January | February 2021

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E – T H E R E S U R G E N C E O F G O L F of the industry. We needed answers and we needed them now. So, with that said, Associations’ right across the country came together. To name a few like The Club Managers Associations of South Africa (CMASA), Professional Golfer Association of SA (PGA SA) all the way through to associations’ like the Turf Grass Managers Association (TGMA) of Gauteng. These associations played a significant role in providing vital information to its members, they took charge, trying to make sense of all the chaos. This then propelled GolfRSA, PGA SA and CMASA into becoming the voice for golf across the country, an undoubtedly massive undertaking. With GolfRSA, CMASA and PGA SA at the helm, there was finally a very committed and hardworking engine that we were able to follow and take direction from. They spearheaded proposals to re-open, provided risk mitigation strategies that all golf clubs could make use of, and we could finally start planning for our rather uncertain futures. GolfRSA introduced and paid for the HealthDocs app, which allowed each club the position to track and trace golfers’ symptoms when golf eventually returned. There was also the introduction of a Help fund for caddies and casual workers, to help the most vulnerable golfing staff. At this point, all that mattered was that we now finally had a light at the end of the tunnel. And Like the famous Desmond Tutu once said, “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness”. As time went on, representatives established talks with government officials, and a glimmer of hope appeared. Financial Reserves to sustain businesses were drastically depleted and clubs simply had no choice but to reopen for any hope of survival.

January | February 2021

It was at this point that I started wondering that when we survived this pandemic, especially in conjunction with our economic crises, would anyone maintain their devotion to golf? Would golf be the first expense cut when finances were tight? Would there be at least enough golfers to keep the industry afloat? So, then June came and finally, we got the green light to re-open. Then something amazing happened which, quite miraculously, still cannot be explained? Golf was back baby, and BACK WITH A BANG!!!! Record weeks of rounds being played, turned into record months. The facility, despite strict protocols, was busier than ever. GOLF WAS BACK and back for good. The hunger for the game re-emerged and more so than ever. It seemed that during the pandemic crisis, people just wanted to play golf and if they were not playing themselves, they were either buying new clubs or sponsoring a round for a friend in need. Clichéd or not, the saying that you don’t know what you have until it’s gone, has never held more truth. If this enthusiasm for golf continues, most clubs will be well on their way to recovering losses incurred because of the COVID-19 lockdown. If there is one thing our South African community most certainly has, it is GRIT. Perseverance like few other nationalities. It has been shown on numerous occasions in our country, that when we come together, we can make anything possible. Thank you to the SA golfing community for your endless support, your dedicated love for the game, and your commitment to your club. It has been you that has made this all possible. From one golf lover to another. Thank you.

he Sunshine Tour has announced that it will tee off 2021 with a strong run of seven tournaments, including three which will be co-sanctioned with the European Challenge Tour. The local golf year will begin with the R1 million Kit Kat Group Pro-Am at Houghton GC from 5-7 February. This will be followed by the three Challenge Tour co-sanctioned tournaments of the R6 million Dimension Data Pro-Am, the R3 million Cape Town Open and the R3 million Limpopo Championship. The Dimension Data Pro-Am, won by South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout in 2020, will take place at Fancourt Golf Estate, George, from 11-14 February where each player will be paired with an amateur and play one round on each of the venue’s three courses – The Links, Montagu and

28

Outeniqua – before a third round cut leaves the leading players to compete for the title in the final round. A week later, the Cape Town Open will return to King David Mowbray GC and Royal Cape GC from 18-21 February. The Challenge Tour’s South African Swing will conclude with the Limpopo Championship, won by South Africa’s JC Ritchie in 2020, from 25-28 February at Euphoria GC and Koro Creek GC. The Sunshine Tour will then continue with The Players Championship (offering a minimum purse of R1 million) from 11-13 March at a venue still to be announced, the R1 million Gauteng Championship presented by Betway from 18-20 March at Ebotse G & CE, and the R1.5 million Tour Championship from 25-28 March at Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate.

KIM WINS U.S. WOMEN'S OPEN DEBUT WITH RECORD-TYING COMEBACK

A

Lim Kim made her first U.S. Women’s Open appearance a memorable last month, closing with three straight birdies to tie the record for the largest comeback and win the biggest event in women’s golf. And in the final major of this pandemic-disrupted year in sports, she won wearing a mask. Starting the final, frigid round at Champions GC five shots behind, the 25-year-old South Korean wore a heavy down jacket between shots and delivered a 4-under 67 for a one-shot victory over Amy Olson and Jin Young Ko. Kim became the seventh player to rally from five shots behind in the final round of the U.S. Women’s Open, and the first since Annika Sorenstam at The Broadmoor in 1995. Olson held her own amid the grief of learning her

father-in-law died unexpectedly in North Dakota on Saturday night. She was in tears Sunday morning on the range, before rain pushed the final round to Monday. Olson, winless in seven years on the LPGA Tour, had a two-shot lead on the back nine after 54-hole leader Hinako Shibuno faltered. But she couldn’t do anything about Kim’s late charge and finished in second place. Ko, the No. 1 player in the world who only recently returned from South Korea where she rode out the COVID-19 pandemic, also birdied the 18th when it was too late to catch Kim. Ko closed with a 68, one of only six players to break par in the final round. Kim finished at 3-under 281 and won $1 million. She added to South Korean dominance of this major, the ninth winner in the last 13 years.

last three holes in the season-finale to secure solo second place, becoming only the sixth player to win the Harry Vardon Trophy three times or more since the European Tour came into existence in 1972.

The 47-year-old Englishman began the season with victory in the year’s first Rolex Series event, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in January, and ended it by winning the Race to Dubai after finishing runner up to Matt Fitzpatrick in the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai last month.

He was previously crowned European Number One in 2000 and 2009, with the span of 20 years between his first and most recent Harry Vardon trophy surpassing the previous record of 15 years held by Seve Ballesteros. His longevity was further underlined by the fact he also became the oldest winner of the Race to Dubai at the age of 47 years, seven months and 20 days.

Westwood made history in Abu Dhabi when he became the first active golfer to win across four separate decades by claiming his 25th European Tour title. The former World Number One entered the record books again in the Middle East at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai as he birdied two of the

Westwood has now added his fourth European Tour Golfer of the Year award to that list of achievements, having also claimed the honour in 1998, 2000 and 2009. He was chosen as the 2020 recipient by a panel comprising members of the golf media.

Jarvis banks Freddie Tait Trophy in 2020 SA Open

C

asey Jarvis won the Freddie Tait trophy in the South African Open as the leading amateur at the Gary Player CC in December.

February. He fired rounds of 73, 74, 71 and 69 to tie for 25th at Sun City, and add the coveted amateur trophy to impressive silverware haul.

South Africa’s No 1 Jarvis claimed the Freddie Tait trophy as the leading amateur. In securing the trophy, the GolfRSA National Squad member became only the second golfer since 1969 – when the SA Stroke Play Championship separated from the SA Amateur – to claim the rarest of trebles in one calendar year.

“This means a lot to me and I’m very honoured to have won this trophy. There are some great names on this trophy,” said the 17-year-old State Mines golfer. “It was a great week and one where I learned a lot about what it takes to succeed in the pro game. I was privileged to play with Christiaan Bezuidenhout in the first two rounds, and he showed me what it takes to get to that level. There is still a lot of work ahead, but I will get there. Winning the Freddie Tait Cup was a goal I set for myself and I’m just very honoured to have achieved it.”

Jarvis won the SA Stroke Play Championship on 25-under at Randpark and defeated James Wilson from Scotland 7&6 at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington for the SA Amateur Championship title in

Jarvis proves too strong at State Mines

asey Jarvis said that his knowledge of the layout at State Mines CC gives him a small advantage over the rest of the field and this turned out to be correct as he dazzled to a two-shot victory over Ricky Hendler in December.

really tired on the golf course today, I told myself I needed to focus and when I focused, I made four birdies on the back nine and I had a three-shot lead at that stage. I didn’t think I’d lose this one and I’m proud of my performance.”

Coming into the final round of the last IGT Tour Chase To #14 at State Mines –his home course and the scene of his first IGT Tour title last year – South Africa’s record-breaking number one amateur was two-shots clear at the top thanks to opening rounds of 67 and 65. A three-under-par third-round delivered Jarvis’ third title on this circuit since the return of golf after the covid-19-enforced national lockdown.

This year alone in the amateur ranks, Jarvis has won the prestigious SA Amateur Stroke Play, the SA Amateur Championship, the Freddie Tait Cup as the highest-finishing amateur in the South African Open Championship, as well as the Gauteng North Open and the Free State Open.

“This one is very pleasing because it’s the last event of the year,” said Jarvis after his win – his seventh this year if you count the amateur victories he’s had. “I’m really happy for the win because it will give me confidence for the year ahead. I am very proud of the way I played this week.” “There wasn’t a point today where I thought I’d lose it,” said Jarvis, “When I began to feel

He now sits at the summit of the Chase To The Sunshine Tour standings following a success-filled year and with the season far from being wrapped up, the State Mines player is, naturally, pleased with the progress he has seen in 2020. “I am very proud of my achievements this year,” said Jarvis. “Winning is not easy and I have won a few IGT Tour titles and the big amateur events, so I’m very proud of myself. ”

SPECIAL FEATURE - G O O D BYE 2020, H E L LO 2021

Goodbye 2020! By: Sue de Zwart

T

hank you to everyone who played such a vital role in golfs survival during this trying year.

To Golf RSA – Grant Hepburn, PGA RSA – Ivano Ficalbi, CMASA – Chris van der Merwe – thank you for the endless hours you dedicated to get golf course maintenance & play possible. To the superintendents & their teams who did the impossible of running their courses of skeleton staff. Thankfully this took place during autumn & winter. To those of you still on your skeleton staff – hang in there.

them every 3 months (be wise in who you take your advice from). • Irrigation maintenance – annual services of every sprinkler head during the winter months. Monthly check of all stations in field. • 5 year equipment replacement plan – this is a working document. • 20 year irrigation replacement plan. • Annual project plans – improving drainage, painting carting paths, course furniture

To the club managers & golf directors who worked harder than ever to ensure the bills could be paid. To all the golfers for supporting the local clubs. As we reflect all the good that happened in 2020 it is time to plan ahead for 2021. We as an industry have certainly learnt to think out of the box, more adaptable & we have to love our “can do attitude”. Golf clubs are a true team environment where the passion & enthusiasm for the game is evident. Us “turf heads” remain focused on producing your ultimate playing surface filters through the team. It is certainly a symbiotic relationship between the club manager, golf director, superintendent & golfer. The end results generally speak for themselves. SUPERINTENDENTS – A FEW KEYS TO SUCCESS: • Know your soil. • Have your agronomic, cultural, IPM & PGR in place for theand yearWally ahead tweaking Dr.plans Karl Dannenberger Bergmann

SPECIAL FEATURE - G O O D BYE 2020, H E L LO 2021 – anything over & above maintaining your turf. • Annual cash flow with the help of your FD. • Treat your club events as your “majors” – use this as a challenge to produce your playing surface. Management: • Allow for spring treatment – on cool season greens this may be your biggest key to success.

• Autumn treatment – nice to have on cool season & imperative on warm season greens. • Manage traffic – compaction is one of the quickest ways to destroy great quality turf. • Provide team for the maintenance team to be ahead of play. • Budget to produce the level of playing surface you desire & surround yourself with the team to do this. Golfers: • Don’t drive where the turf isn’t happy please. • Don’t drive near greens, tees, bunkers. • Repair your pitch marks – if you repair it quickly & properly this won’t be visible the next day. • Fill your divots. • Walk in & out the bunkers at the low points. We have exciting education planned for the year ahead. • 19 January 2021 – Talking Turf groundsman training at Mbombela stadium. • 31 May 2021 – Talking Turf Superintendents’ Conference (almost fully booked). • August 2021 – Cape Turf Show – fantastic education, exhibition & industry fun.
