LE T TER TO THE EDITOR

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader. Hi Neville

Dear Jacques

I see that you guys ran a Facebook poll

Thanks for writing in and for voting in the poll. This certainly elicited a strong response with some very robust point of view.

about Paul Azinger and what he said about the PGA Tour being “superior “to the European Tour and other Tours. You asked whether or not it was right of him to say the following “These guys know, you can win all you want on the European Tour, the international game and all that, but you have to win on the PGA Tour.” 75% of those who voted said he was wrong and I was one of them. I think that is an arrogant, insensitive remark and typically American. What I would like to know though is what your opinion on the matter is? Regards Jacques Smuts

4

My opinion is that he was correct in the sense that the PGA Tour has more cash and prestige than the European Tour. However his comment can be construed as arrogant seeing as though factors such as climate, the stresses of moving, culture etc. need to be taken into account. McIlroy, Garcia and Casey (to name a few) have been successful on the PGA Tour and one need only look at the past decades Ryder Cup results to see how well the Europeans do against the Americans. Regards

Issue 2:

Your Coach in your Pocket Series...

Your Coach in Your Pocket, Andre Louw

Getting better off the tee

S

o in the last issue we touched on the elements that affect the golf ball and we said that to start the journey of becoming more consistent, you need to first understand how the ball is affected by the club in the form of controlling distance and direction and then to also first find out where you are and which of those issues are resulting in you not scoring the way you want to. In this issue we will be looking specifically at getting better off the tee. Now to get better off the tee essentially there are only 3 elements to be taken into consideration: 1. The distance that you can hit your driver 2. How accurate are you with your driver 3. The strategy that you choose once you have points one and two under control

Distance

Let’s first take a look at the distance aspect of hitting a driver. Now off the tee does not necessarily mean hitting a driver, but let’s face it, bombing a big drive off the tee that goes long and straight is FUN!! Not only is it fun, but it will certainly lower your scores. Can you identify with wanting to be longer off the tee?

6

30 Yards extra off the tee adds up to 7.25 shots per tournament on the PGA tour. To learn more about that have a look at the following link: https://golfstatscoach.com/blog/2018/3/23/driving-distance-on-pga-tour-what-is-the-value-of30-extra-yards The elements that are crucial to hitting the ball longer are centeredness of strike, club head speed and angle of attack. Have a look at this video where I will be showing you a basic drill to increase your club head speed and strike if you commit to doing it consistently over time:

https://vimeo.com/392890082/5ab64890d6

Accuracy

The second element once you have increased your club head speed is how accurate you can hit the ball to where you are aiming. To illustrate the importance of accuracy off the tee relative to a certain distance, here is an illustration of the value of every shot from that area:

www.sagolftrader.co.za

March | April 2020

tuition & instruction

1. 2.

3. 4. 5.

Out of bounds - you immediately add 2 shots to your score Penalty Area - the same distance but in a penalty area will cost you 1.5 shots on your score Fairway bunker - you add 0.34 shots In the rough - you add 0.25 shots In the fairway - you do not add any shots to the par from that specific distance

This is taken from the PGA tour stats and is merely to illustrate that where your ball ends up off the tee has a great impact on your score. Now the main aspect involved with accuracy is club face control. Now there are so many factors that can have a negative effect on the club face that the best would be to follow these 3 steps: 1. Go download “Golf Coach App” now from your play store or app store

March | April 2020

2. Register as a golfer using my coach code “coachandre” 3. Send me a video and I will do a free review for you

Strategy

Now that you hitting it longer and straighter, it is really important to gather the correct information to build a strategy around your strengths. Most people do not even know what their strengths or weaknesses are and without knowing it is easy to play yourself right into the zone that you are not particularly good at. Keeping the correct stats on your games will definitely help to identify what those strengths are and help you make better decisions off the tee. Please look out for the next issue of your favourite golf magazine where I will provide you with some insight into improving your approach play. http://www.bdga.co.za/coachandre

KNOW YOUR PGA

PRO Francois de Lange - PGA Professional Pezula Championship Course

1. When did you qualify as a PGA Professional? In 2008. 2. What made you choose this career? I think if you ask most Golf Professionals this career chooses you. 3. Has it always been golf for you? It all started in my final years at school when I caddied at Fancourt and The Links for extra pocket money over the weekends but was always planning to study my BCOM once I matriculated. During my off-season break after my final exams, I approached Blyth Reid (Golf Director) at the time to enquire if there was any casual work available over the festive season and he acknowledged and said well we are looking for a Beverage Cart attendant if I would be interested, I gladly accepted the offer. It was about 2 months later when I was offered a permanent position as Starter Marshal at Fancourt and knowing that I was about to start my studies I decided to take a year off and I accepted the position. Well if I can say that was it, I fell in love with the overall day to day

10

people interaction and especially being involved with the game I love. One and a half years later I heard about the PGA program and instantly I knew this is what I want to do. Fortunately for me, a position became available at Bramble Hill, Assistant Golf Professional and this included the PGA program. 4. Did you ever play or did you ever want to play on tour? I played a few winter tournaments but being able to play full time, of course!! Which keen golfer would not want to tour, however, I always knew that those guys and gals are just too talented. The talent on that level is beyond anyone’s imagination, it is outstanding!! 5. Who has been your mentor in the golfing industry? Wow, I had so many, however, if I need to mention one that had the most impact in my life without a doubt Ingrid Diesel. 6. You have recently taken over at Pezula, what were your immediate challenges? I became GM in 2017 under the mentorship of Ingrid Diesel. Ingrid passed away late in 2018 and I wondered how I was going to be able to fill those shoes. She could grow and shape people to make them believe

HEALTH & LIFEST YLE that anything is possible. 7. Describe a typical workday for a PGA Club Professional. There is no typical workday and if there is you are standing still. This is one of the most exciting parts my job, every day is different and every day you learn something new. 8. With the devastating fires the garden route has had in the past, do you have any precautionary measures in place? What a terrifying time that was and if there is one thing the whole of the garden route community learned from this is how powerless we as humans are against the will of nature. On that scale, there is nothing you can do to stop it from happening it all comes down to us to be more cautious, not having open fires during windy days and of course always have electronic copies and a safe place for important documents. 9. The members of a golf club always come first. Do you agree with the phrase “The member is always right”? I believe the way to see this is that all members have an invested interest in the club and therefore will utilize the facility more often than your visitor and therefore will more than often pick up on concerns or important matters. So to answer your question, my members are my foundation so to answer your question most definitely YES. 10. With consumers being careful about how they spend their money these days, are you finding other ways besides golf to attract people to the club? You have to!! It is even more difficult here in Knysna. I believe that this change of mindset is healthy for any golf club, it makes you think and run it as a business and not just relying on the “regulars”.

March | April 2020

11. Slow play is one of the biggest problems in golf today, how do you manage slow play at Pezula? The dreaded Slow Play Monster, as you know Pezula is a cart only golf course and these carts are fitted with GPS units which we can monitor live. This also allows us to communicate instantly and remotely to the client. 12. Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life? When you decide to follow this career path time does not exist. I have been part of the Golfing Industry just over 20 years from being a Caddy to Executive Management and the only reason for this is that I love what I do. 13. What are your short & long term goals? Short Term, find everything that was positive and find ways to make it better! Long Term, would not mind going abroad for a few years. 14. What is your opinion on the state of golf in South Africa? My personal opinion, we have some of the best golf courses in the world and we must never forget that. Golf courses in South Africa should start working together and not against each other. If we can all stand as one product and as one destination the sky is the limit. 15. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I am a very proud dad of two. I have a wife that understands my career and sacrifices we need to make and so I can’t think of anything better than some FAMILY TIME. 16. Do you still get time to play? I am in the fortunate position to go out for a game or two with members, so yes no excuses for the bad swing.

SPECIAL FEATURE – INSIDE THE 30M RULE

INSIDE THE 30M RULE WITH CASEY JARVIS

I

t’s with great honour and privilege that I am able to share my “inside the 30m rule” (ropes are only for the pros) experiences with the SA Golf Trader readers. My year started off at Randpark for the SA Open. This event is truly the highlight of my golfing career so far. The grandstands, TV crews, spectators, international players etc, made me realise I want to be there in the future. The tournament itself was a success, having made a triple bogey on the 27th hole of my tournament, I found myself one over with 9 holes to go before the cut was made, which at the time was predicted to be 4 under. I hit a weak drive on the 10th hole and eventually found myself short of the tough par 4 in 3. Right here playing the weekend was only but a dream. Incredibly (or maybe it was destiny) I holed a 30m chip for par, this kickstarted a run of 5 threes in 5 holes. A nerve-racking three-foot slider on the last and I made the weekend shooting 31 on the back 9.

20

The weekend was a great learning curve. The course set up was difficult which taught me a new style of golf and an awareness of when they speak about patience. I’m proud to say I finished T36 at 7 under. The top players like Louis (Oosthuizen) and Brandon (Grace) are truly amazing. I would like to thank Golf RSA for giving me the invite and to my playing partners the whole week. They really took me under their wings and made me feel comfortable. Lastly but not least well done to Jayden Schaper on winning the Freddy Tait trophy. Next up was the Free State Open, the first time I have been to Heron Banks, and what a course. Fresh off the SA Open and brimming with confidence, I had a fantastic tournament finishing 18 under and winning by three. Well done to Kyle De Beer who pushed me all the way. Thanks to Heron Banks, Free State Golf Union and Bradford Vaughn for a great tournament and golfing experience.

SPECIAL FEATURE – INSIDE THE 30M RULE I received my new shafts from Taylor Made after the Free Sate Open, and I truly believe this transformed my game. The Gauteng North Open at Centurion started slowly after I opened with a two under 70. After that round, I put in the much-needed range time with the new shafts. This helped as I went 23 under par from there on and ended up winning by 9 shots. I believe I am only the 4th player in the history of Gauteng North Golf to hold both their major trophies concurrently, the Silver Salver (won in October) and the Gauteng North Open. What an honour. Off we went to one of my favourite venues for golf in South Africa, Leopard Creek. A true test in so many ways, the highlight of my week was being part of the South African team, my debut at amateur level. We managed to win the team’s event, which was incredible, and then we watched our team member Martin Vorster win in a dramatic playoff for the individual title. Well done Marty!!! Once again thanks to Mr Rupert for allowing us an opportunity to play on his course and to Golf RSA for a fantastic event. The next two weeks are still a blur in my mind. Feeling I was well prepared for our two majors, I never expected in my wildest dream what was about to happen. Firstly, the South African Stroke play. It has been reported “my love affair for Randpark continues”. They got it

March | April 2020

spot on. I absolutely love the golf course, the greens, the layout, the practice facilities etc. I had a week to remember, winning on 25 under par by 9 shots. I felt in control every step of the way. I’m proud to have broken a legend of South African golf, Dale Hayes’ record that stood for 51 years. Next up was the South African Amateur. This is a tough week, 36 holes of qualifying, into 7 rounds of Match play in four days to be crowned champion. The qualifying started off well with a 63 in round one, a 71 in round 2 enabled me to be seeded #2 for the match play. No game is easy in Match play, it’s different to Stroke play whereby you can be drawn against a very aggressive player who makes 6 birdies in 9 holes and the game is all but over. Each round was tough, and in my third-round match I was forced to make a 30-foot putt on our second playoff hole to get through. A 2/1 win in the quarters and semis took me to the 36-hole final. James Wilson is an experienced player; I knew the final was going to be tough. After the first 9 holes I was one down. On hole 15 I made a crucial birdie putt and form there on the momentum carried on. 3 more birdies closed out the first 18 and I suddenly had a 4-up lead. I was in complete control of my game starting the 2nd round and by the 29th hole I had closed the game and won 7/6. I have a lot of respect James and let’s just say “I won this round” Thanks again to Golf RSA, AON and Royal Johannesburg and Kensington.

Nethunzwi pleads for Soweto as he delights in home victory

M

usiwalo Nethunzwi says more professional golf tournaments should be staged at the recently-refurbished Soweto CC, where he won the Vusi Ngubeni Tournament presented by the Sunshine Tour and Petrus Kleinbooi on the first playoff holes against James Kamte in early March. Now, he leads a group of 15 players into the upcoming season of the Sunshine Tour. “It would be great if we could have tournaments here,” said Nethunzwi of his desire to see more professional events being staged at his home course, “even if it’s just two tournaments in a season, even one – that would be great. This golf course has produced many good golfers. Bafana Hlophe is from here, Vincent Tshabalala who won the French Open, he was from here.”

30

“I did a good preparation coming into this week,” he revealed. “victory was always on my mind. I’m grateful to be the first one to win a professional tournament here. There are a lot of guys that are playing well here, the IGT (Tour) guys, the Big Easy (Tour) guys. When you come here, you’ve got to bring your A-game. “This is the only chance you get. It comes once a year and if you don’t make it, you have to wait for a whole year. That comes with a lot of pressure. But I prepared well” Players who earned their Sunshine Tour cards: Musiwalo Nethunzwi, James Kamte, Irvin Mazibuko, Thanda Mavundla, Jacquin Hess, Alpheus Kelapile, Makhetha Mazibuko, Adriel Poonan, Yubin Jung, Siyanda Mwandla (a), Evance Vukeya, Dwayne Basson, Nikhil Rama, Lindani Ndwandwe, Sipho Bujela, Jason Diab.

Mossel Bay Golf Club

“See the Sea from Every Tee” by Philip Basson. This happened as the result of the vision of a developer, Mr. Urs Windholz, who developed The Mossel Bay Golf Estate on the land surrounding the golf course. His vision included the rebuilding of the golf course and revamping of the club house to create a very upmarket, golfing facility. Further renovations were done to the club house during the course of 2019 and it now of a standard where it can easily hold its own against the best in the country.

M

ossel Bay Golf Club was founded in 1905 with the original golf course positioned at the old aerodrome. The land on which the present course was built was made available to the Club by the Mossel Bay Municipality in 1924. The course was designed by Bob Grimsdell and was built over a period of two years. During 1999/2000 the golf course was redesigned by Danie Obermeyer and rebuilt

The club is a people’s place with a strong membership base of 850 active golfers, they do in excess of 45 000 rounds annually which is no surprise as this is a must play course on the Garden Route. It is a challenging yet user friendly par 72 layout with excellent bent grass greens. Springbok and other wildlife are in abundance on the course. Mossel Bay Golf Club is currently home to Martin Vorster and Jordan Duminy, two up and coming golfers who have already represented South Africa on The International stage.

orn in the small country village of Albertinia (50 klm outside of Mossel Bay) on 19 October 1982, Lodewicus Theodorus “Louis” Oosthuizen came from humble beginnings. Louis grew up on a farm in a tennis-playing family, his father and brother both having achieved at provincial level, but it was golf that ultimately won his heart. At the age of nine, Louis decided golf was his future, often spending his time at Mossel Bay Golf Club.

on the Mossel Bay Golf Club course. This would be a pivotal moment for the rest of his career. Between 2000 and 2002, Louis won several amateur titles, including The World Junior Championship in Jamaica. He won the Open Championship in 2010 and is currently ranked 18th in the world.

Excelling as an amateur player on Provincial and National levels, he caught the eye of Ernie Els who from 2000-2002 supported his early career through the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation. During his amateur career, on 12 December 2002, Louis shot a round of 57 (15 under par)

They had the support of Nicklaus Design as technical advisors. The Clubhouse has a dramatic location that overlooks the 16th, 17th and 18th greens. Open-air terraces offer panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and the Gwaing River valley. The course itself has been sculpted in accordance with the landscape, ensuring that the surrounding environment is enhanced and not hindered. Oubaai offers a wonderfully stimulating and enjoyable golfing experience. Oubaai Golf also offers a full service practice facility including driving range, and two practice putting greens. The golf practice facilities at Oubaai are among the best in the Garden Route and include a large driving range, putting green and short-game area, all complimentary with your round of golf.

Fancourt Golf Estate, the venue for the Dimension Data Pro-Am, is Southern Africa’s premier golf and leisure resort, which is set at the foot of the majestic Outeniqua Mountains. Fancourt’s three courses – Montagu, Outeniqua and The Links – were all designed by the legendary Gary Player. New Vokey Design SM8 Wedges

– One Giant Shift Forward in Wedge Performance Breakthrough CG Design Takes Performance of #1 Wedge in Golf to New Heights

M

aster Craftsman Bob Vokey’s relentless mission to design and craft better performing, better feeling wedges has reached a new height of innovation with the introduction of his Vokey Design SM8 models, the most accurate and forgiving Vokey wedges yet. The groundbreaking Progressive Center of Gravity (CG) design concept that originated with Vokey Design SM6, and was refined with SM7, has experienced one giant shift forward in the new SM8. By moving the CG forward, to a position that actually hovers in front of the wedge face, Vokey and his R&D team have produced a wedge that wants to square every time. The result is improved distance and trajectory control, better feel and increased stability for more consistent results. These advancements – enhanced by Bob’s six tour-proven sole grinds for precision fitting, and 100% inspected Spin Milled grooves for maximum spin – have SM8 poised to continue Vokey’s historic run as the #1 wedge on tour since 2004 and counting.

66

SM8 PERFORMANCE AND TECHNOLOGY Great wedge play comes from distance control, shot versatility and spin. Bob Vokey and team have designed SM8 to improve performance in all three areas through the following key innovations: • Reimagined Progressive CG: Vokey’s Progressive CG design philosophy aligns the center of gravity with the impact position – lower in the low lofts, higher in the high lofts – for better trajectory and distance control. SM8 takes the next innovative leap, pushing the CG forward while maintaining the vertical CG position to create a more consistent, better-feeling strike. To achieve this, Voke’s team lengthened the hosels and counterbalanced that weight with high-density tungsten low in the toe. This high, forward CG position boosts MOI (up to a +7% increase in the higher lofts) producing a more solid feel, improved ball flight and a club face that simply wants to square up at impact for more consistent results.

100% Inspected Spin Milled Grooves

• Refined Sole Grind Options: Developed through decades of work with the best shot makers in the game, Vokey’s six Tour-proven sole grinds – F, S, M, K, L and D – allow golfers of all skill levels to be precisely fit for their swing type (steep, neutral, shallow), shot making style and course conditions (firm, neutral, soft). SM8 continues to feature the most complete lineup of grind, bounce and loft options, allowing for more creativity and consistency, and giving players of any level the ability to create multiple shots around the green. - One of Vokey’s preferred setups is pairing a higher bounce sand wedge (i.e. SM8 56.14 F) with a lower bounce lob wedge (i.e. SM8 60.08 M). This type of setup – which empowers a player to adjust to firm or soft conditions from the turf or in a bunker without having to change technique – is utilized by both Jordan Spieth (56.10 S and 60.04 L) and Justin Thomas (56.14 F, 60.06 K). Based on this insight, and current PGA Tour tends, the D Grind has been extended to the 54.12 and 56.12 SM8 models, providing players with versatile mid to high bounce sand wedge options.

March | April 2020

SM8’s patented Spin Milled grooves are meticulously engineered and cut to the edge to maximize spin and shot control. The Vokey R&D team continues to improve upon its industry-leading groove cutting tolerances, with each groove on every head individually cut and 100% inspected for conformity to the rules of golf. Micro-grooves are individually cut in between grooves, which maximize spin on partial shots. A proprietary heat treatment is applied to the impact area to double the durability of the groove without impacting feel – making it the most durable groove in golf.

SM8 wedges can also be custom ordered with a wide range of specifications and personalization, including an industry-leading selection of shafts and grips. For a complete list of options, visit Vokey.com.

Double delight for South Africa’s

top golfers

N

ot even a two-hour delay due to dangerous weather could halt the relentless charge of South Africa’s two top-ranked golfers – Caitlyn Macnab and Casey Jarvis – towards their place in golf history. With their wins in the Aon South African Amateur Championships, Macnab and Jarvis both achieved the rare SA Amateur double – winning the Aon Women’s and Men’s South African Stroke Play Championships and Amateur Championships in the same calendar year. Astonishingly, in the first year that the women’s and men’s championships were played in the same week and at the same course, the extra-ordinary Ekurhuleni pair added to an even rarer piece of history.

82

The last time the double of the Aon South African Stroke Play Championship and the Aon South African Amateur Championship was achieved by both men and women was in 2007, when Ashleigh Simon and Louis de Jager prevailed. Jarvis became the youngest champion in history of the SA Stroke Play Championship with his nine-stroke runaway victory at Randpark GC in February, the 16-year-old State Mines golfer ended the run of Scotland’s James Wilson with a comfortable 7&6 victory on Royal Johannesburg & Kensington’s East Course. Jarvis is the 10th double winner since the SA Amateur Championship switched to a match play format in 1925.

March | April 2020

A M AT E U R N E W S Macnab celebrated her 18th birthday in February by claiming the SA Women’s Stroke Play Championship crown and three days later, the Serengeti golfer downed 14-year-old Kyra van Kan 4&3 in the 36-hole match play final. She is the 13th calendar double champion of the women’s flagship events. Macnab was a huge favourite to win the final as the number one ranked woman golfer in South Africa, but surprisingly she fell behind early to Van Kan. “I think I was half asleep on the first nine,” she said. “I hit one green in the first seven holes and short-sided myself on the ones that I missed. Kyra was playing steady and all of a sudden I was 3 down, so I had to work really hard to get it back. She was two down after the first 18 holes but fought back and turned the match around, winning with a par on the 15th hole. “It feels awesome,” Macnab said. “To win one of these events is really special so to win both in the same year is just amazing. This is two big items ticked off the bucket list, so I guess I’ll need to reset a few goals this year.” She had some words of encouragement for Van Kan, who was bidding to break Ashleigh Simon’s record as the youngest ever winner of the Aon SA Amateur Championship. “I am so impressed by how Kyra carried herself and how she played the entire week,” said Macnab. “She’s done incredibly well and she’s really announced herself as someone to look out for in the future.” Sixteen-year-old Jarvis was delighted to have added the title to his impressive resume. “I’m a bit lost for words at the moment,” he said. “I was mentally tired after last week, so to come here and manage to get the win is something that I’m extremely proud of. His dominance was built around five birdies in the last six holes of the first 18 holes.

March | April 2020

“I made some good putts coming down the stretch that gave me a 4-up lead at the turn,” he said. “It allowed me to play freely on the second round and after I won the 19th and 20th to go 6-up, I felt I could play a bit safer. I knew I couldn’t relax because James is a very good player, so I stuck to my game plan, I just didn’t attack the pins.” The SA Women’s Amateur launched in 1906 and the SA Amateur dates back to 1892. This year marked the first time in the history of the event that the men’s and women’s championships were played simultaneously and the players enjoyed the experience tremendously. “Having Aon as a sponsor has been incredible,” said Macnab. “The branding, the look and the feel of the championship was completely different. They have really lifted the scale of the event and we can feel it, especially on the women’s side. It felt like a professional golf tournament, like when you go to the South African Open. “Sharing the championship with the men has been great. The vibe was fantastic, even if we sometimes bumped elbows on the putting green. It was great to go and cheer the guys on in their qualifier, and then to see them return the favour and support us in the SA Stroke Play final. The vibe has been good and we’ve all cheered each other on.” Jarvis was equally impressed by the new format of the tournament, which will stay at Royal Johannesburg & Kensington for the next two years. “It’s a lot of fun playing with the women and they really made the week more special. We loved playing here at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington. To play top courses in the Aon SA Amateur was such a privilege and we are really excited to know that we are coming back next year.”

THIRTEENTH ANNUAL

John Collier Survey

T

he thirteenth edition of the John Collier Annual Survey on Environmental Compliance and Good Governance for South African Golf Courses is due to be published shortly and mailed out to golf clubs, industry representative bodies and golf provincial unions in March. This thirteenth Annual Survey provides an essential tool for chairmen, management committees and club management of golf courses as well as industry representative bodies and constitutes a benchmark for all golf clubs and representative bodies to measure themselves against latest trends. Furthermore, within the changing legislative and regulatory environment, it provides an opportunity to consider the changes taking place. The structure of the Annual Survey commences with disclosing our findings under the nine areas of focus in Part Three. Thereafter, in Part Four the Annual Survey reviews current developments in terms of Legislation, Regulation, Enforcement and Case Law. Based on the information discussed above, Part Five of the Annual Survey then poses the question “Is weak governance compliance an indicator of deeper challenges facing amateur golf in South Africa?” and a look at the state of the health of the golf industry in South Africa in respect of good governance and environmental compliance. The Annual Survey concludes with recommendations for 2020, a special thank you to all those clubs that participated in the Annual Survey, and a request that all clubs consider participating in the forthcoming year’s survey. At last week’s Honda Classic, Justin Rose, who signed an endorsement deal with Honma at the start of last year to play a minimum of 10 clubs, showed up at PGA National with a TaylorMade SIM driver. He still had exactly 10 Honma clubs in the bag, but it is unclear whether the driver was required. This week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, however, Rose left little doubt that his time with Honma is all but certain to be over as he is playing a TaylorMade TP5 ball, 10.5-degree TaylorMade SIM driver, 15-degree TaylorMade SIM Max fairway wood, Cobra Speedzone Pro 17.5-degree 5-wood; his old TaylorMade P730 irons (4-PW) and two TaylorMade Milled Grind 2.0 wedges (52, 56 degrees) along with a

Rose was quoted in Honma’s announcement on his signing, saying, “Coming off one of my best years professionally, I wanted to make it |a point to get better. I believe Honma equipment and the legendary Honma craftsmanship can help make me better.” Rose also was supposed to be involved in some of the company’s club designs going forward. In fact, the company produced a TR20 440 Justin Rose Sakata 7 driver. At Bay Hill, Rose still had Honma signage, indicating that he is still under contract with the company for the time being. As for how long that will be the case remains to be seen, but if history is a guide, this relationship will be over sooner than later.

As autumn approaches and the temperatures drop, our mindset shifts By: Sue de Zwart

I

f you are growing warm season turf – Bermuda, paspalum or kikuyu – your autumn applications will greatly determine your turf quality in the upcoming spring & summer. This is a critical time for a “soil clean up”. Kikuyu in South Africa has been hit hard by a disease called Large Patch. If treated in autumn every year this disease is easily contained. Howeve should you choose to ignore it, it will spread & become costly to control. Poa germination is at its peak in April & Autumn. If you don’t want to encourage poa germination then it would be best not to hollow tyne in those two months. Poa seed can live in the ground for 90 + years. It can be a wonderful playing surface or an awful weed which is tough to keep at bay. Pennant Magnum (a pre-emergent herbicide) can be tank mixed with Headway Maxx to prevent poa seed germinated in autumn. Autumn treatment is a vital tool to ensure a healthy winter. This can be a small hollow-tyne of 8 – 12 mm. Plants thrive in a healthy soil.

94

Short cuts in cultural practises lead to a poor playing surface & shorten the lifespan of greens. Like they say – no pain no gain. Greens usually looking their best when we tackle spring & autumn treatment – a small sacrifice for a fantastic playing surface.

Large Patch

Symptoms:

Large ‘Patch appears as rings or patches of blighted turfgrass that measure 12cm to 3m or more, in diameter. Patches are brown to yellow in appearance, with a possible “orange firing” at the periphery of the patches. Small reddish-brown colored leaf spots occur on leaf sheaths, stems, and stolons. After the leaves die in the blighted area, new leaves can emerge from the surviving crowns. If the

SPECIAL FEATURE - AU T U M N A P P R O AC H E S turfgrass is still green, the disease is most apparent down in the canopy, especially around the leaf sheaths as discolored/blackened lesions – when pulled lightly, these leaves detach very easily and are sometimes green above the damaged sheath. Conditions Favoring Disease: The symptoms of Large Patch can vary depending on the turfgrass cultivar, or climatic and atmospheric conditions, soil type and texture, and intensity of the turfgrass management. This disease is favored by high relative humidity, as well as temperatures of 100C to 150C at night in late fall or early spring. Infection is most likely when soil temperatures at a 5-10cm depth decrease to 180C. This is the period to apply preventative fungicides. Large Patch infestation is more sever when the turf has high levels of thatch or is fertilized with nitrogen late in the season.

Large patch - 3 litres/ha spring and autumn to get control of this disease on kikuyu. Management Tips: • Maintain balanced fertility. • Avoid nitrogen applications in the late fall through early spring when the pathogen is active. • Increase the air circulation. • Avoid over watering. • Improve soil drainage. • Reduce thatch. • Treat in March and early spring. • 2 litres/ha Headway Maxx for fairways. Do a follow-up application 21 days later. • Water volume 750 – 1000lt/ha water.
