Tiger’s comeback is great for golf and

Tiger Woods winning the Masters must rate as one of the all-time greatest comebacks in ANY sport. To beat a top quality field like that after the many health issues that he has had was simply amazing.

sports in general because it is an amazing story of redemption and perseverance.

To me it highlights the internal conflict I have with supporting an athlete who I grew up admiring. I’m 30 now, but as I child I idolised him, in fact my primary school book report was on Tiger Woods. However I was deeply disappointed in the life actions that precipitated Tiger’s downfall.

The personal things that brought him down seem to be the result of his not being in touch with his own feelings for the people in his life. He was a golf machine and didn’t seem able to just relate well on a human level. I have watched his struggles to regain his place in the golf world and give him a lot of credit for his recent accomplishments, but hope that the down time has humanized him more.

I think that we need to move away from commenting on his personal life as that is after all “his personal life” and this applies to sportsmen and women across the board.

By winning the Masters, Tiger Woods has put the oomph back into the game.

Excitement ahead of the PGA Championship it at fever pitch and that is in no small part due to Eldrick Tont Woods.

TIP Distance control on your wedges.

B

eing a good golfer is more than hitting the golf ball 300 meters and longer.

Dustin Johnson nr 1 golfer in the world is one of the longest hitters on tour, but he worked hard on his pitching and short game to get there.

A lot of professional golfers work on the “clock system” to control their wedge play.

Knowing how far you can hit your wedges with 3 easy golf swings will give you 12 golf shots you know you can hit and therefore you will be more confident with your short game.

Jacques Blaauw uses this technique: Before he starts he will make sure his setup is correct.

His stance is a bit narrower than a full golf swing

Most of the time I see high handicappers take out there 60 degree wedge between 40 and 90 meters hoping they can get close to the pin, but most of the time it doesn’t.

As amateur golfers you don’t have the time to drill this in but by starting on 3 different golf swings with your wedges you will gain more options and control on your pitching.

If you want the ball to spin you should choose the 10 o’clock swing with the 62 degree wedge.

If you want it to sit softly choose the 9 o’clock with the 56 degree, this will take spin off the golf ball.

I’ve always loved sports, and when I got bitten by the “golf bug” it bit hard. And what is more rewarding than making your passion into a career?

8. As a PGA Professional, what do you enjoy most about the industry?

I know it sounds cliché, but have you seen my office view (when I step outside)? The environment is used for recreation, which means generally people who visit are far more relaxed, thus making our job a little easier to ensure that they get full enjoyment whilst here. Secondly the people who cross our paths.

9. The members of a golf club always come first. Do you agree with the phrase “The member is always right”? ***laughs… Those who know me, know I am very black and white in terms of rules and regulations. A lot of the times if you can sympathize with people that invoke the customers always right attitude, you can reach an amicable agreement, But if it’s wrong, then it’s wrong. Sometimes all that is needed is a compromise of sorts.

10. With consumers being careful on how they spend their money these days, are you finding other ways besides golf to attract people to the club?

The way society is evolving, clubs need to find and develop ways to encourage more participation. Glendower is no different nor immune to the every changing dynamics at play, all I can say is, watch this space.

11. Slow play is one of the biggest problems in golf today, how do you manage slow play at Glendower Golf Club?

We try make the golf course a little easier to navigate on busy days. Mike Burnard and his maintenance team have also taken the course back to its pre SA Open design. Widening the width of the fairways and reducing the height of the

rough has seen a good reduction in the average round time. Having a knowledgeable operations team has also allowed us to try and stay on top of slow play too.

12. Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life?

I am required to work different hours to most.

The hospitality industry doesn’t ever stop or rest and so one adapts to these industry demands. Thankfully my wife (self-proclaimed Golf Industry Widow) is understanding, that this is a passion of mine and is fully supportive of it.

13. What are your short & long term goals?

Work – Develop and implement a proactive team and a proactive approach to all things golf. Yes I know some things are unavoidable and require reaction but many can be avoided with the right structures, foundation and team.

Personal – Run a marathon.

14. What is your opinion on the state of golf in South Africa?

I believe things are changing for the better, moving from the archaic ways courses and country clubs were run. My only concern though is watching a televised golf tournament and seeing the condition of the course, many local golfers expect the same presentation at a fraction of the price. Clubs are doing their best and often on a restricted budget, to be able to offer a “tournament manicured” course. So when you feel the need to draw up a comparison, make sure its done fairly and like-for-like.

15. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I juggle a few things that make me happy.

Golf, friends, paintball, exercise and games.

16. Do you still get time to play?

Yes I do, even if it’s on an off day, I try to play at least once a week, but will very seldomly allow that to go past the 2 week mark.

South African Golf Courses

SUSTAINABILITY AND REGIONAL WORKSHOPS The 12th edition of the John Collier Annual Survey discusses the issue of sustainable golf and raises many points for and against as to whether golf clubs are in fact making progress in what John Elkington wrote “In its purest, most distilled form, the imperatives of sustainability are summed up by just three words: Planet, People, and Profit.” In terms of the results published in the 12th John Collier Annual Survey, regrettably there is a decline in compliance levels of the sustainability imperatives.

During the last week in May the golf industry gathers to talk about Sustainability at the Royal Johannesburg Country Club in Gauteng, Victoria Country Club in Kwa Zulu Natal and Atlantic Beach Country Club in Western Province. The theme of the regional workshops is “The Practical side of Sustainability; Measuring your Club’s environmental footprint, operational performance, staff, customer and community engagement.” Certainly, what is not measured cannot be managed.

So, it is hoped that the Sustainability Workshops in May will encourage golf club managers, golf directors and course superintendents to embrace the sustainability imperatives and participate in third party reviews. Harding’s exploits put him in Presidents Cup frame

W

hen an unfamiliar name popped up on the Masters Tournament leaderboard recently, almost everyone gasped with the same question – “Who is Justin Harding?”

For golf’s fervent followers in South Africa and Asia, Harding is already a familiar name thanks to a combined nine victories on the Sunshine and Asian Tours, earlier in the year he took another big leap forward in his career by securing his biggest win yet at the Qatar Masters on the European Tour.

The rewards for an amazing five wins over a span of 10 months have included appearances in the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, the Masters and other PGA TOUR starts. Ranked 712th in the world at the end of 2017, he now sits in 45thplace and finds himself mixing it up with the big boys and hanging out with

potential teammates for the Presidents Cup. Harding’s recent success has made him a genuine contender to qualify for the International Team against the United States at Royal Melbourne Golf Club, Australia from December 9-15. With countryman and idol, Ernie Els captaining of the squad, Harding hopes to book his seat on the plane to Australia.

Els likes what he has seen from Harding after playing several rounds together during the past year. “Incredible story,” said the South African legend. “In less than 18 months, he’s come from absolutely not having a card on the Asian Tour, to winning on the Asian Tour, winning in Europe and finishing 12th at the Masters. And he’s got a great game obviously. He can win worldwide and he’s a great wind player. He could be a great asset to our team.”

WORK

he mercury is dropping and the growing season is coming to an end. This is the ideal time to undertake winter maintenance on your golf course, as the work that you complete during this period will have a lot to do with you enjoying a trouble-free spring and summer ahead. I don’t believe in fighting fires. Preventative maintenance & planning are key. There are always unforeseen issues which crop up, but these are the exception.

IRRIGATION Irrigation is always my starting point. This is, after all, the heart of the golf course, and it is easy to neglect this department when the system is working well.

The quality of your turf is depends on the efficiency of your irrigation, and it is much better to take stock of your system in winter rather than during long periods of hot dry weather, when a shutdown could be disastrous.

Use this irrigation maintenance checklist as a guide: • Systematically clean and service every sprinkler.

• Replace nozzles every five to six years, or as close to this as your budget allows.

• Check irrigation patterns in the dew to ensure no uneven coverage.

• Print station detail sheets off the central control & make sure that the information in the field correlates with the pc.

• Take satellite box casings apart, clean them and do the necessary maintenance.

• Clean the pump house.

• Service the pumps & filter bank

BUNKER MAINTENANCE This is a great opportunity to check that your bunker sand depths are uniform throughout.

Aim to achieve the perfect balance between playability and shot value – we do not want the bunkers to be too soft or too firm.

Wetting agents may be used when the sand is too soft. If your bunkers are too hard, then either turn them over by hand, or use St Francis Links superintendent Charl Blaauw’s invention, the Fluffy. It’s a handy tool.

BUNKER EDGING: For those who haven’t installed one of the fantastic liners on the market, second prize would be to install a rigid plastic lining 100 mm deep (clear if possible) pushed in around the bunker’s edge: it isn’t visible, does not affect play, but does allow one to use an irrigation flag to find the exact line and edge back to it consistently every three months.

Install a misting system on your bunker faces or Netafim drip irrigation on your bunker edge.

CART-PATHS EDGING, PAINTING AND MAINTENANCE While you are edging, painting and maintaining your paths, it is a good idea to take the time to prune any branches that get in the way of golfers. Try walking the same route golfers do and you will see how annoying it is to have to dodge overhanging branches. People often neglect to attend to this minor inconvenience.

TREE AND ROOT PRUNING Follow a yearly tree-pruning programme to remove deadwood, shape trees and trim branches that affect play. You should also take care to prune the roots and install barriers where they intrude on the greens.

EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE Equipment-maintenance programmes for winter include: • Grinding reels • Facing bedknives • Servicing equipment according to the maintenance schedule • Working on old equipment • Attaching riggers to walk- behind greens mowers, to enable you to maintain a consistent collar width • Attaching brooms to walk- behind mowers, to allow you to stand the grass up a few times a week during the growing season.

STAFF TRAINING One of the most rewarding parts of the job.

I would like to encourage you with a success story: when I joined Leopard Creek in 1997, Siphila Mhlongo, the irrigation technician, had never operated a computer. I clearly remember saying, “Siphila, this is the ‘on’ button.” Every afternoon Siphila and his

assistant, Louis, would meet me at the computer, where we would set the irrigation together. We then sent the irrigation staff and two supervisors on a beginner’s computer course and, later, for training in MSWord and Excel. Siphila is now one of the top irrigation technicians in the country and has conducted numerous training sessions, which have been well received. It is important to provide computer literacy training to the people higher up in the golf course staff ranks.

Leopard Creek’s superintendent, Derek Muggeridge, has trained one of the greens operators to be a very successful administrative assistant, and there are many other such stories at clubs around the country. Set aside a few hours a month for staff operator training that’s linked to multiple-choice questions.

Once the greens operator begins taking an interest in disease, detail, pitch-mark repair, and so on, you’ll see an immediate improvement in the operator’s work ethic.

ADMINISTRATION This is a necessary evil that few course superintendents relish, but winter is a great time to get your spreadsheets organised and to carefully analyse all this data. Putting this off, although tempting, will wind up with you having to catch up later – never ideal.

This list is a good place to start: • Rainfall and irrigation records (I like to include all the pertinent daily information • – rainfall, irrigation applied, and so on) • Soil temperature • Lab results for greens, tees, fairways and water – it is always good to track your base elements and pH. EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE RECORDS Winter is often thought of as a time when there appears to be less that needs doing, but this is not true. Remember – put in the effort now and you will reap the rewards of a stress-free spring and summer.

I was born in Bloemfontein and attended Grey College.

2. At what age did you start swimming?

Yes. 4. In 2008 you became the first South African to compete in four successive Olympics Games, how tough was it to be at the top of your game for so long?

There is a saying: ‘It’s tough to get to the top but even harder to stay there.’ This is true. I was fortunate to remain injury free and motivated to train and compete professionally for many years.

5. Which of the four Olympics was your favourite?

The 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens where we won gold in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay.

6. What was your favourite stroke?

Freestyle and individual medley in which I broke three world records.

7. Briefly, what does it take to be a top-class swimmer?

Grit.

8. How important are genetics?

Important but not as important as the willingness to outwork your rivals.

9. Who would you call the best swimmer ever?

Michael Phelps.

10. Do you still swim much, socially?

Val de Vie Estate has a 25m indoor pool, 50m outdoor pool and a recreational pool.

I use all of these often.

11. What are South Africa’s future prospects like in the swimming arena?

The past decade we were blessed to have champions such as Cameron and Chad.

Cameron has since retired and our hopes rest on Chad.

Premlall makes Big Easy IGT history at Observatory

urav Premlall hit the global headlines last year as the youngest amateur to qualify for and make the cut in the South African Open Championship at Randpark GC and, last month, the Glendower junior made more golfing history when he became the youngest amateur winner on the Big Easy IGT Challenge Tour.

At 15 years, 10 months and 14 days, the GolfRSA National Squad member was composure and confidence personified as he upstaged a field of professionals at Observatory GC with a masterful display to close out a two-shot victory on 12 under.

“It feels so good. It’s hard to find the words.

I’m so delighted this victory,” he gushed. “It’s just what I came here to do this week and to deliver on the job feels so good.”

Premlall is the second GolfRSA National Squad player to win on the local golf development circuits this season. In February, another Ekurhuleni junior Casey Jarvis became the youngest IGT Challenge Tour winner at 15 years, seven months and 22 days with his win at State Mines.

Premlall, Jarvis and Christiaan Burke, who finished second on 10 under, will be heading to Ireland with four more members of the squad at the end of May as part of the GolfRSA National Squad annual tour.

The troupe will play the East of Ireland Championship at County Louth GC and the St Andrews Links Championship in Scotland before they travel back to Ireland to for the Amateur Championship.

“This win is a great boost before the GolfRSA National Squad Tour,” said Premlall, who attends BSI Sport Academy at Huddle Park.

“I was really happy with my top four finish in my first Big Easy IGT Challenge Tour event at Centurion two weeks ago and I learned a lot from that tournament. This week the course was incredibly tight and the set-up was tough; it really tested us.

“Christiaan and I both really enjoyed it. We are grateful to GolfRSA for giving us another invitation to play this week to gain more experience and get some more world amateur golf ranking points.”

SA Mid-Amateur double for Scully

K

waZulu-Natal golfer Derek Scullard beat Shaun Stapleton with an eagle in extra time to defend his South African Mid-Amateur Championship title at the Ebotse G&CC in early May. The 40-year-old fired a final round one-under-par 71 to set the clubhouse target on two-over 218, but Stapleton birdied the closing hole for a 72 to tie, forcing Scullard into a sudden-death play-off.

The pair returned to the par four final hole, and this time, Scullard got the result he looked for in regulation play.

“I overcooked a 5-iron and couldn’t up-and-down for birdie in the final round, but this time my drive finished 15 yards shorter,” said the Mount Edgecombe golfer. “I hit a great drive down the middle and flushed a 5-iron at the flag. It ended about 12 foot from the hole.

“Stapes was a good position to make birdie, so I knew I needed to sink that eagle putt. It felt like pay-back when that putt dropped. I’m so pleased with this win, because this week was challenging and to come out on top again feels really, really good.”

“It’s such a tough layout and mentally, it was probably toughest challenge of my career,” said the Hillcrest resident. “The greens are so different to what I usually play on. Mistry, Paulsen goes wire-to-wire for SA Amateur glory

ajal Mistry slept on the lead for two straight nights but she finished the job to lift the South African Women’s Stroke Play Championship trophy for a second time.

And Mistry was not the only one to reach the winner’s circle in wire-to-wire style.

Western Province rising star Kayla Paulsen also led from start to finish at Woodhill CC to seal a five stroke victory in the B-Division.

Mistry opened her campaign with a two-under-par 70 to share the lead with fellow GolfRSA Elite Squad player Caitlyn Macnab. She fired a stunning five-under 67 in the second round to start the final day four shots clear of Gauteng team-mate Symone Henriques.

Macnab was a further three strokes adrift in joint third with Boland junior Megan Streicher.

Mistry birdied three of her first five holes, but a bogey at par three 12th and double bogey at the par four 13th cut her advantage to three shots.

The 18-year-old Randpark golfer, who had been remarkably poised all week, shrugged off the back nine stumble and solid pars from the 14th hole allowed her to enjoy a long-awaited walk up the final hole.

A six-foot putt for par at the last for a final round 71 and a five shot triumph was celebrated with a water shower from her close friends and fellow GolfRSA Elite Squad team-mates.

“I really happy with the result and the way I managed my game around this tough course

to win again,” said Mistry.

“I played a really great round on day two to give myself a chance and I stuck to my strategy in the final round. When I won two years ago, it was the first time I experienced real pressure.

This time around, I never felt under pressure and I could actually enjoy the win.”

Western Province Women’s Golf Development Squad graduate Paulsen was over the moon after edging out Kamaya Moodliar from KwaZulu-Natal with rounds of 87, 85 and 87 to win the B-Division. “I had low expectations coming here because Woodhill is such a tough course, and I’m so happy with the result.

Double SA Amateur delight for Mistry

ajal Mistry produced the prize-winning shots when it mattered most to claim a historic South African amateur women’s ‘double crown’ at Woodhill CC in the beginning of May.

It took a bit more work than she anticipated, but a mere three days after she won the SA Women’s Stroke Play Championship for a second time, the 18-year-old GolfRSA Elite Squad member defeated Kaylah Williams at the 20th hole to lift the SA Women’s Amateur Championship title.

Hugging the SA Women’s Amateur trophy – which dates back to 1906 – Mistry could barely contain her delight.

Mistry’s incredible achievement put her on a short and very exclusive list of women who have claimed the calendar double in the two premier events.

“It’s been such an amazing week. I was trying to do my best to win both tournaments and scoop the double, but far and away, holding this trophy right now is the best feeling ever.”

In the 50 years since the SA Women’s Stroke Play Championship was introduced, just seven women have accomplished this rare feat.

“I want to dedicate this week to my family and thank them for their unconditional love and support. To them, I’m always a winner and they never allow me to doubt myself, whether my game is at a high or a low. They are my heroes.”

Another aspect to consider is personal liability covers in the event of personal injury to a person or their property. These are questions that are worth discussing with your broker.

is the Golfer from the past?

He was born in Plainview, Texas on the 20th November 1929.

He was a member of the North Texas State golf team that won four consecutive NCAA Division I titles from 1949-52.

He won ten PGA Tour titles.

His most notable win was at the 1967 PGA Championship, an 18-hole playoff victory over Don Massengate.

He was a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team in both 1965 and 1977.

He was responsible for a change to the rules of golf. During the 1963 Phoenix Open, he had a putt roll up to the lip of the hole and stop. Claiming that the ball was still moving, he waited for seven minutes for the ball to drop (it never did). Rule 16-2 was revised in 1964 to state that players had to tap the ball in within ten seconds or be penalized.

He is well known for his success on the Senior PGA Tour winning 22 events including two PGA Seniors Championships. He won the first official event on the Senior PGA Tour – the 1980 Atlantic City Senior International.
