LE T TER TO THE EDITOR

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader. To the Editor I write this letter to you whilst still celebrating the amazing Springbok win over England in the Rugby World Cup final. I forfeited playing golf today so that I could watch this game and boy am I happy that I did. What a comprehensive display from a side that has steadily risen in the past 12 months. This shows you what you can achieve with talent, hard work and determination. I hope that our golfers are taking this in and that a South African can pick up a Major or two in 2020. Rassie Erasmus made it clear that it is a privilege to be able to play rugby and give others hope, I feel that some of our young golf stars need to take heed of these words and that success will inevitably

Dear Michael

Thanks for writing in. Yes what a game, the Boks were unbelievably all but written off by certain media and yet they taught England a rugby lesson in the final. I think this will give inspiration to all our sportsmen and women and indeed to the country as a whole, most South African sports stars are fairly humble people and Rassie’s words will not be lost on them. Government needs to realise that golf is an important sport that garners a lot of publicity and that it should be included in their talks. As far as Majors go, I reckon that at least one will be captured by a South African next year. Regards

follow. Thanks for a great magazine. Regards Michael Street

Be SunSmart:

know how SPF works!

S

outh Africa has one of the highest monitored Ultra Violet (UV) levels in the world,[1] and our country is heating up, receiving more UV exposure than in years gone by.[2] With skin cancer being a serious consequence of sun-damaged skin,1 it’s not good enough to just apply the first sunscreen you can lay your hands on. Do you know how long your sunscreen will protect you for? The SPF, or Sun Protection Factor displayed on sunscreen is an indication of how well that product will protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UVB rays (Ultra Violet B).[3] These are the rays responsible for the redness of skin, burning, skin damage, skin spots and ultimately skin cancer.2 How the SPF number works is like this: if it takes your

unprotected skin five minutes to start turning red in the sun, then an SPF 20 sunscreen will give you 20 times that number or minutes’ protection. (5 x 20 = 100 minutes, or 1 hour 40). If you turn red after five minutes and you use an SPF 50 sunscreen, you’ll get 50 times as much protection. (5 x 50 = 250 minutes, or 4 hours 10 minutes).3 Be sure to apply a sunscreen bearing the CANSA (Cancer Association of South Africa) Seal of Recognition (CSOR), like the Island Tribe range of products. As members of the Rainbow Nation, Island Tribe recognises South Africans’ diversity, and offers products for weekend warriors or full time adventurers. But underneath it all, we all need protection from the harsh African sun. One nation. One sun.

KNOW YOUR PGA

PRO

Trevor Wilkes - PGA Professional Selborne Park Golf Club

1. When did you qualify as a PGA Professional? 1954. 2. What made you choose this career? My brother was a golfer and he inspired me to pick up a club and from there onwards the bug bit as they say. 3. Has it always been golf for you? Let’s just say from the age of 14 it has been. 4. Did you ever play or did you ever want to play on tour? I played on tour from 1955 to 2000. 5. Who was your mentor in the golfing industry? Bert Thomas from Parkview. 6. You are more into the coaching side at Selborne GC, describe a typical work day for you. These days I spend most of my time coaching only.

10

Honorary Life Member and Master Professional

7.

You have been at Selborne GC (the first golf estate in SA) for a very long time, what makes this such a special place for you? Selborne was and still is the Augusta of the South Coast. The place just gets more and more beautiful with every sunrise and I am proud to be the head-pro of such a stunning golf course. 8. Do you have a highlight or fondest memory of your long career in the industry? The one that stands out for me was winning in the U.K and also playing in the Masters at Augusta In 1957. It was the first year they decided to have a cut off of 40 players, myself and Ben Hogan missed the cut by one. 9. As a PGA Professional, what do you enjoy most about the industry? I love to coach and help see one grow their game in this wonderful sport.

HEALTH & LIFEST YLE 10. The members of a golf club always come first. Do you agree with the phrase “The member is always right”? Members do come first, however they might not always be right. You just have to approach each circumstance diplomatically. 11. With consumers being careful on how they spend their money these days, are you finding other ways besides golf to attract people to the club? We promote many other activities at our club. For example we have a bridge club, quiz evenings and the occasional music festival. 12. Slow play is one of the biggest problems in golf today, how do you manage slow play at Selborne GC? Slow play is a problem world wide. We have adopted the ready play system and also encourage members to pick up when they can’t score. Unfortunately there are those few who wish to finish the hole no matter what. These players will soon be buying rounds at the bar.

13. Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life? I am only involved in coaching and the days for coaching are set around the customer. My personal life is not effected to be honest. 14. Do you still have short & long term goals? Personal goals now are to shoot my age and remain consistent at the game. Long term goals not as much. Just very grateful to be playing golf at my age. 15. What is your opinion on the state of golf in South Africa? I feel that golf is really struggling at the moment. More and more courses are struggling to keep their heads above water and are finding other ways and means of making ends meet. 16. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? In my free time I enjoy watching sport on TV and if there is none, you will then find me on the golf course or putting green at Selborne. Practice Practice Practice! 17. Do you still get time to play ? I play once or twice a week.

Every shot by every player to be livestreamed at The Players Championship

F

or the first time ever in golf, every shot by every player will be live-streamed from a full-field tournament when The Players Championship returns to TPC Sawgrass, March 12-15, allowing fans to follow any player for all four rounds.

The ambitious production will require about 120 cameras – some stationary, some hand-held and others part of the NBC Sports Group broadcast – to show shots that for the opening two rounds start about 7:40 a.m. and end some 12 hours later.

Coverage will be available to PGA Tour Live subscribers on NBC Sports Gold or Amazon’s Prime Video channels.

Augusta National had video coverage of every shot from every player at the Masters this year, though it was available through a catalog of players chosen off its website. The difference at The Players is that every shot will be accessible live.

‘’Our vision is to bring every shot in every PGA Tour golf tournament live and on-demand to our fans,’’ said Rick Anderson, the chief media officer for the PGA Tour. ‘’And this is the first step to making that happen.’’

he East Rand (Ekurhuleni) is the urban eastern part of the Witwatersrand and extends from Germiston in the west to Springs in the east and south down to Nigel. The area includes the towns of Boksburg, Benoni, Brakpan, Kempton Park, Edenvale, and Bedfordview. The region has no less than 16 golf courses, and two of these, Glendower Golf Club and Serengeti Golf & Wildlife Estate have hosted the SA Open multiple times. Many notable golfers have come from this part of South Africa with Ernie Els (Germiston) and Ashleigh Buhai (Edenvale) perhaps being the most famous. Africa’s busiest airport, O.R. Tambo International is situated in Kempton Park, thus the area is the hub of Gauteng and a wonderful place to visit whether for business or pleasure.

14

Benoni, known as the ‘city of lakes’ encourages picnics at no fewer than five lake sides, whilst the Rietvlei Zoo and Nature Reserve, just outside Alberton, and the Rondebult Bird Sanctuary - a rare wetland area with amazing bird hides and access to antelope, ostrich and zebra - both make wonderful day trips. Boksburg boasts numerous beautiful old heritage sites – the old law courts, the post office, St Michael and All Angels Anglican church, designed by Sir Herbert Baker. Often overlooked for their glitzier neighbours, the towns on the East Rand can certainly hold their own and the same can certainly be said about the many superb golf courses in the vicinity.

STATE MINES’ RETURN TO

STATE OF THE ART

S

tate Mines Country Club has always enjoyed the justifiable reputation of being one of the very best golf courses on the East Rand.

The club’s reputation to provide outstanding facilities was validated by the Ekurhuleni Golf Union who awarded the hosting of the 2020 Ekurhuleni Strokeplay to the club.

When disaster struck and the greens were lost due to what is believed contaminated water, the team set to work bringing the course back to the exceptional level members and players expect.

Located in the Highveld region, with excellent weather, State Mines Country Club welcome players seven days a week.

Hindsight might declare the loss of the greens and the subsequent urgent need to resurface a blessing in disguise since the greens were worn out and required constant costly maintenance to remain playable. The time consuming and labour intensive work undertaken on the course culminated in excellent seed germination of 100% bentgrass. Club Captain, Pieter Heine, is superbly confident the playing surface of the course will reach peak tournament condition early 2020; culminating in the February 2020 hosting of the IGT and Sunshine Tour QC School tournaments.

The temporary greens have now grown in for the past two months and are smooth and playable.

amed after John Huddle, the then Mayor of Johannesburg, Huddle Park Golf Club opened its doors in 1939. The rationale was simple - provide a facility offering a world-class golfing experience for all who wished to play, at an affordable price.

During its heyday in the 1970s, Huddle Park’s three courses are estimated to have generated a profitable annual income from between 150 000 and 200 000 rounds of golf. Huddle Park was also home to the Johannesburg Municipals Sports Club, and its members played the Blue Course, which twice hosted the SA PGA Championship in 1971. On weekends the queue of golfers would stretch for hundreds of metres. It was first come, first off, no tee times for the Yellow and White courses. This is where many Johannesburg golfers learned to play the game at a time when private mem¬ber golf clubs were exactly that, exclusive preserves for their own members. Visitors weren’t welcome then as they are today, especially those who had no club affiliation.

24

However tough times and a number of failed development plans saw the City of Johannesburg abandon the once magnificent site and the club closed its doors in the mid 90’s. To restore Huddle Park to its original glory and beyond took belief, commitment and serious investment from a partnership that could see past the dumped rubble, dilapidated clubhouse and neglected parkland terrain. David Bagg, Gordon Brews, the late Mike Kletz and a team of committed staff and management saw the dream and chased it and with investment of over R 30-million for the course revamp, club restoration and facilities upgrade, the dream has reached fruition. Huddle Park is now totally restored and is an out-and-out pleasure to visit whether for golf, a mountain bike ride, a spot of fishing, dog walking, fives futbol or ziplining in the trees. Huddle Park is proudly back on the map! So good are the practice and playing facilities, that Michael Balderstone chose Huddle Park as home for The Golf School of Excellence and Balderstone Sports Institute. All of their students are fortunate to practice and play at world-class facilities, have access to state-of-the-art technology and be coached and mentored by leading SA and international coaches.

JOHN COLLIER 2019

ANNUAL SURVEY ON

South African Golf Courses SUSTAINABLE GOLF In little over 18 months’ time the Nigel Golf Club will celebrate its centenary. The history of Nigel Golf Club is delicately woven into the history of the gold mining industry on the Witwatersrand, especially the Gold Fields of South Africa mine, Sub Nigel. Today one still sees a gold mine headgear looming in the distance, but gold mining in the Nigel area has declined over the years directly impacting on courses such as the Nigel Golf club. Notwithstanding valiant efforts by the management committees the small country town golf courses are under extreme pressure. Information to hand indicates over the last ten years, South African golf has seen the closure of at least 1 golf club per year, a steady decline of registered golfers, a steady increase in the age demographic of regular golfers, and a decline in members at golf clubs. This is translating into a decline in the national compliance level of golf courses for good governance and environmental compliance which stands at 27% and interestingly during the past year some 40 golf courses throughout South Africa have had their post returned due to non-renewal of their post office box facility. The situation facing golf in South Africa is not critical at this stage, but the tipping point is coming. A meaningful debate between all parties, not the least being the governing bodies of golf but also at Municipal, Provincial and National level is required. But meaningful debate cannot progress unless it is underpinned by reliable research and statistics. Invitations have been sent out to golf clubs throughout South Africa inviting clubs to participate or update their John Collier Questionnaire. Just recently the Nigel Golf Club participated in the John Collier Questionnaire, and we hope your club will participate in this year’s Questionnaire. If you require any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us at ajcollier@telkomsa.net.

“I really wanted to shoot under par today,” he said. “I know it didn’t matter, but making birdie on the last was pretty important to me and it felt good to put that four on my card. “It’s been such an incredible week. This place has a very special place in my heart, because we came down here on holiday for so many years.

SPECIAL FEATURE - CELEBRIT Y GOLFER PROFILE

Trevor Halstead

former Springbok & Sharks rugby player 1. Where were you born and which schools did you attend? I was born in Benoni so primary school was in Benoni at Rynfield Primary. We moved to the Natal South Coast when I was 9 and so finished my primary years at Margate Primary. After that, I was fortunate enough to do my high school years at Kearsney College. 2. Where did your rugby start? U13 at Kearsney, coincidentally playing centre for the B-side. 3. Was it always going to be rugby or were there other sports? No, there was always other sports . I had to choose between hockey or rugby in grade 10. I chose rugby but fractured my wrist in the first game of the season, I managed to play hockey with a cast on my arm for Kearsney first team which was a bonus. 4. You played most of your rugby for the Sharks but where did your rugby career start? I started at Durban Collegians. We had a great U21 side, coached by Henning Swanepoel. I started out at scrum half but was moved to fullback by him. I was then called up to the Natal U21 side, coached by Swys De Bruin.

5. What was your most memorable moment on a rugby field? Without doubt standing singing the National Anthem for my first test at Stade de France against the French. 6. Did you prefer inside or outside centre? I preferred outside centre, less intensity, where you had time to make decisions and weren’t scrambling all the time, 7. You made the move to Europe and played for Munster in 2005 & 2006, in your opinion what are the biggest challenges in relocating to Europe and playing rugby there? To be honest, the biggest adjustment for me was becoming anonymous again. The years at the Sharks and Boks had been a whirlwind and I suppose I became used to being recognized in public. The first few months in Ireland I just blended in with normal life and it was great! Then we won the Heineken Cup in June 2006 and that anonymity went to hell! 8. Who was the toughest centre you played against? I played against some formidable athletes over the years. Tana Umaga, Brian O’Driscoll to name some who fit into the all time greats.

SPECIAL FEATURE - CELEBRIT Y GOLFER PROFILE 9. What was your favorite rugby stadium to play at? The Shark Tank will always be my favourite. 10. Where you surprised with the two teams in the World Cup final? And who will your money be on? No surprise for me. I predicted a NZ loss to England (They were my predictions in the final). I’d put my money on the Springboks in this final. 11. What do you make of the new rules that have come into the game, is rugby becoming over- reffed? 100% …. I am definitely not a fan of most of the new rules regarding high tackles, intent in the tackles etc. I feel as a contact sport we are treating the players like babies and wrapping them in cotton wool.

12. What has been keeping you busy since retiring from rugby? Since retiring its been a testing introduction into the business world. My brother Greg and I run a third generation manufacturing plant. We are specialist high pressure die casters. We cast in brass, zinc and aluminium, supplying builders hardware and iron mongery to wholesalers and retailers throughout SA, Namibia and Mozambique. My Company is Halcast Pty Ltd. 13. What advice would you give to youngsters today as far as sport is concerned? Play as many sports as you can. Specialise as late as possible. Reap the benefits of the skills learned, the different thought patterns and reactions required for each sport. Enjoy the friendships that are made and make the extra effort to keep those friendships.

GETTING O N T O GOLF • When did you start playing golf? I started with a friend of mine in about 1986. We were 10 or 11 and played between Margate CC and Southbroom GC. We played as regularly as possible but once we hit high school, golf was put on the back burner. • What is your current handicap? Now I’m an unstable 16. Moments of great golf counteracted by what seems like a complete lack of talent ! • Which is your favorite South African golf course and why? I absolutely love Zimbali. The course is stunning and when I play there I almost feel like I could afford to live there ….. almost ! • Do you still play with any of your former teammates and if so who’s is the toughest competitor on the course? The only time I get to play with the old rugby guys is at corporate or charity golf days. I did recently play a round with my mate Brent Russel at the Legends golf day at Bosch Hoek GC. • Have you had any embarrassing moments whilst playing golf? I’m not proud of the day I flung my 7

iron down the 9th fairway at Mount Edgecombe. The handle caught on my finger and hooked deep into the dam. Lessons learned … tempers tamed. • What is your your favourite club in the bag? When you are an unstable 16, it depends on the day. • Do you walk or take a cart? In my group of friends it’s frowned upon to break into a sweat on the course. So we generally take carts. • Your favourite golfer would be? Tiger Woods. • Have you ever had a hole-in-one? Cant even say I’ve been close. • Who would be in your ideal fourball? Easy... Tiger Woods, Dwayne Johnson, Jack Ma and yours truly.

10 things you should know about Patrick Reed

K

essler Karain, Reed’s caddie and brother-in-law, gives us the lowdown on the 7-time PGA TOUR winner. Few people know a PGA TOUR pro as well as their caddie. So here are 10 things Karain thinks you might not know about Reed.

5. Patrick loves to grill out. He’s great at cooking steaks.

1. Patrick is extremely superstitious, whether it’s how many balls he starts with in his bag – always 12 – or which socks he wears on which day.

8. Patrick is definitely a workaholic. On any given week when he goes home, he might take two days off. So, you do the math – he works more throughout the year than he actually takes off.

2. He and I both like to go to kids’ movies like “The Grinch” or “Aladdin” or “Lion King” or “Incredibles 2.” Luckily, he has a 5-year-old daughter, Windsor Wells, so we have an excuse to go! 3. Patrick always starts with six tees in his pocket. If he uses all of them during a round, he grabs six more – even if he just has one hole to play. 4. His lucky ball marker is a silver quarter.

80

6. He’s a sports geek. Baseball, football, hockey – you name it. And he’s a really big Notre Dame fan. 7. He’s a huge watch fanatic and has a cool collection. Hublot is one of his sponsors.

9. We both like a good steak. His favorite is a bone-in ribeye – all day, all day -- whereas mine would be a filet that I cook. 10. He really likes the Shrimp Alexander appetizer at Morton’s Steakhouse. So much so, in fact, that he’s figured out the recipe so he can cook it whenever he wants. It’s really good, too.

Daisies reigns supreme in SA Mid-Amateur IPT “Cameron Johnston and Greg Sheard from Western Province shared the top spot on 11 points, but we had seven players in the top 16, including Alex in third place on 10.5 and Louis and Jacques tied fourth on 9.5.“ Verster said the team’s pairings was a big key to our success.

G

auteng North routed Central Gauteng in a pressure packed final round last month to claim their first victory in the 14th South African Mid-Amateur Inter-Provincial Tournament at King David Mowbray GC. The Daisies powered their way past Southern Cape (9 – 3), Western Province (6.5 – 5.5), KwaZulu-Natal (9 – 3), Ekurhuleni (7 – 5) and Free State (8.5 – 3.5) to lead the A-Section log with 10 points. “We knew victory was within our grasp, but even with one hand on the trophy, we were taking no chances,” said Gauteng North captain Gustav Verster. “The way our boys fought till the last putt dropped in the final round was a proper show of their commitment to the team, ” Few said. “I am bursting with pride. We started building this team in 2017 and their commitment has been phenomenal. They jumped at the chance to play the course earlier this year and they played four rounds over the weekend to really come to grips with the layout and the wind. The guys practiced like demons to prepare for this tournament and the Most Valuable Player ranking speaks volumes about our team.

82

“We worked really hard to perfect our line-up for the foursomes and it paid off. We scored clean sweeps against KwaZulu-Natal and Free State, we beat Central Gauteng 3.5 – 0.5 and we led 3 – 1 against Western Province, Southern Cape and Ekurhuleni. “We had a lot of special moments this week, but seeing our manager hugging the trophy was probably the best one of them all. Gerry has been managing IPT teams at every level for more than three decades and he gave us 110 percent. “He planned on retiring after this year, but we made him promise to stay if we won and he will definitely be there when we take up our title defence next year. We had incredible support as we prepared for this tournament, so this win is a shout-out to the executive at Gauteng North Golf Union, and all our families.”

astern Province not only won the promotion battle in the 14th South African Mid-Amateur Inter-Provincial, but they did it in style – lifting the B-Section title with one round to spare and capping an unbeaten performance with a final round triumph at King David Mowbray GC las month. Eastern Province defeated Boland 7.5 – 4.5, North West 7 – 5, Border 7.5 – 4.5, Northern Cape 9.5 – 2.5 and mowed down Limpopo 9 – 3 to seal victory, but the champions put the celebration on ice to chase one more win. “We didn’t lose a match in the entire tournament and our goal was to go home with an unbeaten record,” said team manager Joe Matiwane. “The guys were determined to finish the job in our final match against Mpumalanga before the corks would pop.” “Congratulations to every player on pulling through this amazing result and congratulations to Ryno Ferreira for captaining this team to victory. Your ability to boost the moral in the camp and to rally the

players played a huge role in our victory.” The skipper was especially proud of the fact that Eastern Province took the top three spots in the Most Valuable Player standings. “We set our combinations early on and it added to the sense of continuity this week. We dominated the foursomes and had an early edge in almost every match. The rest was up to the guys and they all put their hands up this week. As much as golf is an individual game, our team spirit was phenomenal and it played massive role in our success.”

Charl Schwartzel closing in on returning from a wrist injury that ended his 2018-'19 season in April.

A

fter having his 2018-’19 season cut short because of a wrist injury, Charl Schwartzel could be ready to return to action in about a month if all goes well for the South African. The 2011 Masters champ played just his third round of golf in October, participating in the Bahamas Strong Pro-Am at Old Marsh Golf Club, since announcing on June 9 that he would be taking the remainder of the season off to let the injury heal. “It’s been a long time off already,” Schwartzel said at the charity outing put together by Brad Faxon, Justin Leonard and Seth Waugh to raise money for relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Dorian. “I’m itching to play. If I can get through two or three weeks of playing constantly with no pain then I’ll give it a go.” The 35-year-old, who Ernie Els had already ruled

90

out for this December’s Presidents Cup, says he will take a cautious approach, however. Though Schwartzel has been able to practice and play in recent weeks, he emphasized that there is no need to rush back if there is any lingering pain. On Tuesday, at least, he showed no ill effects, playing in the 18-hole event without any signs of pain. Schwartzel, who will be playing on a medical extension when he does return to the PGA Tour, last played in April at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, missing the cut with his partner Louis Oosthuizen. It was his eighth missed cut in 13 starts, with Schwartzel’s lone top-10 last season coming at the Puerto Rico Open, where he tied for sixth. Since being out, Schwartzel has fallen to 191st in the Official World Golf Ranking, his lowest position since 2004.

Every suspended three months for drug abusE

M

att Every has been suspended for three months for violating the PGA TOUR’s conduct policy on drugs of abuse.

The TOUR announced the suspension In late October. Every will be eligible to return January 7. He will miss only three tournaments for which he would have been eligible.

Every has two victories on the PGA TOUR, winning back-to-back at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard in 2014 and 2015. He advanced to the FedExCup Playoffs last year, but did not make it beyond the first postseason event. Matt Every’s statement. ‘I am making these comments in response to the statement released by the PGA TOUR announcing my suspension for testing positive for a substance identified as a “drug of abuse.” To be clear, I tested positive for cannabis, a drug I do not abuse and a drug

November | December 2019

that I have a legal prescription for in the state of Florida. I have been prescribed cannabis for a mental health condition by my physician whom has managed my medical care for 30 years. It have been determined that I am neither an acceptable candidate to use prescription “Z” class drugs nor benzodiazepines. Additionally, these classes of drugs can be highly addictive and harmful to the human body and mind. For me cannabis has proven to be, by far, the safest and most effective treatment.’ With that being said, I have no choice but to accept this suspension and move on. I knew what WADA’s policy was and I violated it. I don’t agree with it for many reasons, mainly for my overall well-being, but I’m excited for what lies ahead in my life and career. Over the last few years I have made massive strides and I know my best is still in front of me. I can’t wait to come back better than ever in January.

ith water being our biggest challenge selecting the best turf for your climate is of vital importance. The Eastern side of RSA

S pecial F eature – C hoosing the right turf

TEES,FAIRWAYS & ROUGH: Seeded varieties Gobi – a very well priced, drought tolerant Bermuda with great colour – easy to maintain. (Available from Talking Turf ) Barbados – a more expensive, but great option available from Barenbrug Riviera – an exciting variety which will be commercially available by 2021 – beautiful, fine Bermuda able to withstand -15 degrees Celcius – growing in Switzerland

Western side of RSA & cooler interior Tall fescue is a great option – drought & cold tolerant & will withstand a temperate climate. After recently visiting the FITO trials in Barcelona I am now convinced that this is a great option for our temperate regions. The new fescue varieties are dark green, nice density & a great option for tees, fairways & semi rough. Sparring can be pre-ordered from Talking Turf. As tall fescue is slow to establish it can be planted with 50 % rye grass to speed up the establishment. Once you have selected a variety – order it – as all the new seed varieties are imported. The good news is they are being bread for less input – more drought and disease tolerant. It is good to move with the times!

Prior to seeding •

Test your soil with a reputable lab – e.g. Labserve or BemLab • Decide on your pre-plant fertilizer & apply this prior to seeding • Prepare the soil to ensure no compaction • Add 5-10 % organics by volume Seed plant your grass & then the key maintenance begins: • After seeding apply 10 litres/ha Qualibra + 2 litres/ha Subdue Maxx (only necessary when seeding to prevent a disease damping off ). Water this in a repeat after 21 days. • Seed requires light, frequent watering, but not too much as you don’t want to encourage algae.

November | December 2019

Grown in Weeks 1 – 4, 6, 8 & 12 • Fertilize weekly with 20 grams/ m2 of 5:1:5 (chlorine free for grass). You can alternate these applications with 12 grams/m2 black urea to encourage microbial activity • Apply to dry grass & water in well • Thereafter apply fertilizer every 6-8 weeks with a foliar feed every 3-4 weeks

CHOOSING THE RIGHT VARIETY OF TURF & GROWING IT IN PROPERLY WILL HUGELY DETERMINE YOUR TURF HEALTH

is the Golfer from the past?

He was born in Kerville, Texas on May 9th 1948. He turned pro in 1971 after graduating in 1970 with a degree in psychology from the University of Houston. He has won 10 PGA Tour events and came close to winning back to back U.S.Opens. In 1975 he lost in a playoff to Lou Graham at the Medinah Country Club. In 1978, he won twice on the tour that year including the PGA Championship. He also won the World Cup individual and team event where he was paired with Andy North that year. The 1978 PGA championship was held at Oakmont Country Club. Our mystery golfer became the best comeback winner in PGA history after trailing Tom Watson by seven strokes with 14 holes to play. Ultimately, the tournament came down to a three-player playoff – mystery golfer, Watson and Jerry Pate. All three players made par on the first playoff hole. The drama ended on the second playoff hole when Pate missed the green, Watson missed a 30-foot birdie attempt and mystery golfer made his 12-foot birdie putt for the Championship. He was often sought out by other players to do comedic imitations for which he has a special talent. Answer on page102
