LE T TER TO THE EDITOR

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader. Dear Neville Firstly happy New Year to you and the SA Golf Trader team, I really enjoy reading the magazine and your Facebook posts are always informative and entertaining, keep up the good work for 2020. My letter concerns the marketing of an event taking place in just over a weeks’ time, the SA Open. The Sunshine Tours flagship event and the second oldest Open (the British Open is the oldest) is taking place at Randpark Golf Club and yet there seems to be very little marketing and hype leading up to the tournament. The SA Open is hosted by the City of Johannesburg and surely there must be a budget for this purpose, the event is co-sanctioned by the European Tour and must have the potential to be a big money spinner. You can’t rely on word of mouth and past spectators to fill up the galleries, you need to actively market an event of this magnitude and in my humble opinion this has not happened.

Dear Donovan Thanks for writing in and for your kind words regarding the magazine and Facebook page, we will certainly endeavour to keep on improving during 2020. I have to agree with your sentiments regarding the marketing of the SA Open Championship, this is the premier event on the South African golfing calendar, being played at one of the country’s finest golf courses and it should be accorded a substantial marketing budget. The public need to be made constantly aware of the event, who’s playing, ticket prices, parking facilities, what else is on offer (food stalls, craft beer) etc. That said; let’s hope that people come in their droves and that there can be a South African winner at the end of the day. Regards

Issue 1:

Your Coach in your Pocket Series...

Your Coach in Your Pocket, Andre Louw

How to be more consistent in your whole game...

C

an you identify with wanting to be more consistent in your game? Throughout my career in coaching I have come across so many different golfers at various stages in their development. If I ask them what they wanted help with, most of them respond with an “I would just like to be more consistent”. The challenge is that most of them do not have an idea of what that looks like, let alone where to start looking for it.

anyone’s opinion; those are factors that influence the ball and are the elements I like to refer to as “elements below the line”. Then there are the factors that are unique to you and this is where it is crucial that you get a professional to help to interpret the information to you and help you to understand the dynamics unique to you and how those factors negatively influence the laws, ultimately causing your inconsistency, those are “elements above the line”.

We will go on a 6 part journey throughout the year and will be kicking off part 1 with some information to ultimately start solving the problem you have and that is “I would just like to be more consistent” I would like to start off with an analogy we can all relate with. When using a GPS, it will need some information to be able to correctly advise you. Firstly, where are you now? Then, where is it that you want to go? Without those two pieces of information no GPS can correctly give you a map, now that road map is where I as the coach come in. Can you start to spot where you are going wrong? Perhaps getting directions but not knowing where you are? Perhaps having no idea where you wanting to go? No wonder you feel lost... To be more consistent, first understand how the club affects the golf ball. You see there are certain laws that cannot be challenged by

6

The reason there is a line between the two is because they should not be confused with one another. I would like to invite you to go to this link which will give you more information and help you understand these factors: https://docs.google. com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdKHxpeWW9EpZAWmD_d7yJF30s3guNF3F54Tz5yAD2qKR5HRg/ formResponse

KNOW YOUR PGA

PRO

Dean Kupferman - PGA Professional Dainfern Golf Club

1. When did you qualify as a PGA Professional? I graduated from the PGA apprentice program in 2016. 2. What made you choose this career? My love for the game of golf is what made me want to have a career in the golf industry. 3. Has it always been golf for you? Ever since I was 7 I would go with my dad to the golf club. The Lake Club Benoni was where I learnt how to play the game and ever since then it has been golf, golf and more golf. 4. Did you ever play or did you ever want to play on tour? Yes when I was 16 years old but I was focused on getting my education past me first before golf. 5. Who was your mentor in the golfing industry? Craig Stickling was my mentor as I did my apprenticeship under him, and I still look up to him till this day. If the opportunity didn’t come across to work with him, I’m don’t think I would be where I am today. 6. Describe a typical work day for you. Each day brings many different challenges and

10

experiences. From golf day meetings, member engagements and queries, golf course maintenance issues, responding to emails, management meetings etc. Each day brings new possibilities and you have to tackle each day, one day at a time. 7. You recently moved to Dainfern Golf & Residential Estate, what new challenges will this present? Yes, I have recently moved to Dainfern as the Head Professional and retail manager. I work for Global Golf and I head up the pro shop, driving range and all the golf carts and maintenance. New challenges will be meeting all the members and home owners and growing a relationship at Dainfern. 8. Do you have a highlight or fondest memory of your long career in the industry? I have been in the industry for 6 years now, and my best highlight would have to be the people that I have met and grown relationships with. 9. As a PGA Professional, what do you enjoy most about the industry? The thing I enjoy most about the golfing industry, is the fact that we are all striving to grow membership, increase rounds and strive to have the best golf course with the best service to members and visitors. 10. The members of a golf club always come first. Do you agree with the phrase “The member is always right”?

www.sagolftrader.co.za

January | February 2020

HEALTH & LIFEST YLE

The member most certainly does come first, but I wouldn’t say that the member is always right. There are times when you need to remind a member that they are in the wrong. “Treat members as royalty, and visitors as members”. 11. With consumers being careful on how they spend their money these days, are you finding other ways besides golf to attract people to the club? Most golf clubs need to focus on family-oriented activities. I see lots of clubs focusing on the food and beverage departments, things like “moms night off”, curry nights, half price on certain menu items are good ways to attract members to utilize their club for more than just for a round of golf. 12. Slow play is one of the biggest problems in golf today, how would you manage slow play? Ready golf is a good initiative to bring into the game of golf to allow for pace of play to be better. Playing your shot if you are ready before it’s your turn is a effective way of speeding the game up. 13. Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life? Yes, the golfing industry takes a lot of time out

January | February 2020

of your personal life, as you are expected to work at least 6 days a week. Most weekends you would be required to work, as this is when the majority of your members would play. Weekdays is typically when you would host golf days or groups, so these are just as important as weekends. 14. What is your opinion on the state of golf in South Africa? The state of Golf in South Africa is definitely struggling at the moment with current economic times. Corporate golf days have definitely decreased where many corporates used to have a golf day annually, now they may have a golf day every 2nd or 3rd year. I do feel that there are a few too many golf courses in South Africa, and if golf were to succeed again, a few golf courses would need to close down. 15.What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I currently enjoy spending time with my 9-month-old baby daughter - Olivia-Grace Kupferman. As we don’t get much time off in the golfing industry we have to spend as much time with our loved ones. 16. Do you still get time to play? Playing golf is a part of the job. I do feel that we need to be able to play golf with the members of the club in order to network and get to know your members better as well as to see how the golf course conditions are and if there are any issues on the golf course while playing.

Oosthuizen excited about the future of golf in SA

O

osthuizen, speaking on the eve of the first round of the SA Open and in his role as both defending champion and the new Player-Host of the second oldest national Open in golf, said the depth of golf worldwide has increased substantially, and that South Africa also has a deep well of talent coming through. “Golf is very competitive worldwide. At any Major Championship now there are 50 to 60 players that can win it. It’s such a small margin between a top-10 finish in a Major and a win. But I think South African golf is in a really good spot. We’ve got lots of young players coming through and it might not happen right now, but I do think we have a few Major champions coming,” said Oosthuizen.

January | February 2020

The strength of amateur golf under GolfRSA is evident with a record 11 amateurs playing in their national Open. And with the SAGDB celebrating its 20th anniversary as the official body for golf development in South Africa, and the other coordinated efforts of foundations and golf academies such as the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation and Oosthuizen’s own Louis57 Academy, South African golf has a fully integrated and sustainable golf development drive that is the envy of many a country. “I think golf in South Africa is strong. I have one or two of the golfers in my foundation who are looking forward to starting a career in golf in the near future. It’s just good to see golf in such a good place in South Africa,” said Oosthuizen.

Alfred Dunhill Championship prevents the use of over 65 000 single-use plastic bottles

T

he 2019 Alfred Dunhill Championship, which took place from 28 November to 1 December at Leopard Creek Country Club in Mpumalanga, took a stand against single-use plastic by encouraging fans and golfers to purchase Alfred Dunhill Championship-branded glass bottles at the course or bring their own reusable bottles to refill free of charge at various points on the golf course.

The temperatures and humidity reached extraordinary levels at Leopard Creek, so much so that the organisers allowed players to wear shorts during competitive rounds for the first time in the 47-year history of the European Tour.

The initiative, a partnership between Refill Co, Bluewater and Consol and the first of its kind on the Sunshine Tour, saw 32 852 litres of purified drinking water served on the course between 25 November and 1 December, the equivalent of approximately 65 704 plastic water bottles.

“The organisers of this year’s Alfred Dunhill Championship took a leadership role in the South African golfing community by deciding to actively reduce the amount of single-use plastic from bottled water at the event. This was a bold decision and is an example that needed to be set here in SA and around the world.

22

All of Refill Co’s systems delivered purified water that is safe to drink and that was drawn from the Crocodile River, making this a truly sustainable water solution.

PGA Recognition Award for Sandy Lyle

T

wo-time Major winner and one of the greatest Scottish golfers of all time, Sandy Lyle, is the 2019 recipient of the PGA Recognition Award for his outstanding contribution to golf. Shrewsbury-born Lyle picked up the accolade as guest of honour during the PGA’s annual fundraising lunch in Scotland this week. The 61-year-old follows in the footsteps of some of golf’s greatest names to have been recipients of the award including Seve Ballesteros, Sir Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie and current Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington. Lyle turned professional in 1977 and was one of the key players responsible for the resurgence of European Golf in the 1980s.

24

He went on to claim no fewer than 18 European Tour titles and won his first Major at the 1985 Open Championship at Royal St George’s Golf Club, becoming the first British player to lift the famous Claret Jug since Tony Jacklin in 1969. Three years later, Lyle put his name in the history books by becoming the first British player to win The Masters in 1988. Lyle was instrumental in two European Ryder Cup victories, including Europe’s first win on American soil at Muirfield Village, Ohio, in 1987. In total Lyle played in five Ryder Cups and was a vice-captain to Ian Woosnam when Europe recorded an emphatic victory over the United States at the K Club in Ireland in 2006.

SPECIAL FEATURE – INSIDE THE 30M RULE 11th on the open amateur rankings, I needed a strong finish to the year. First up was the Silver Salver at Irene Country Club. A third round 63 helped me to 18 under for the tournament and a four shot victory. I was off to a good start. A first round 78 in a strong south easterly at Humewood hampered the finish I wanted, but solid 2nd and 3rd rounds helped me to a third place finish in the Eastern Province Open. Then, as always in November, exams arrived. Some obstacles I faced was playing the Bobby Locke at Parkview while studying for geography, trying to write maths and science while think-ing about Royal JHB East course 10th and 11th holes, or rushing to finish my English exam so I can get a practice round in at Macaauvlei for the Oppenheimer Trophy. I would love to report that I got 5 distinctions, but instead will tell you I managed two top 5s and a win at the Central Gauteng Open, and yes I passed Grade 10, thankfully.

Furthermore, I was also select-ed for the Open National team to partake in the Africa Amateur at Leopard Creek in February 2020. It’s amazing how having achieved my short term goal and getting those selection phone calls, the swing frees up. Playing in The JHB Junior at the tough Randpark Bushwillow course a final round 64 helped me beat a high flying Yurav Premlall. Yurav and I then helped Ekurhuleni win the Junior Inter Provincial in Oubaai for a 3rd time in as many years. It’s been a long but successful 2019 and am extremely excited for 2020. Living the Dream in Clarens T

Clarens

he town of Clarens is situated at the foothills of the Maluti Mountains in the Free State province of South Africa and nicknamed the ‘Jewel of the Eastern Free State’. Clarens was founded in 1912 and named after the town of Clarens in Switzerland, where exiled Paul Kruger spent his last days. It is viewed as one of South Africa’s finest destinations as it boasts a myriad of wonderful activities for any taste or preference. The immense beauty that surrounds Clarens is itself worth a visit. It is situated close to the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, near the Lesotho border. The most notable features of both Clarens and the Park are the golden ochre, and

The tree-filled town offers a wonderful display of colourful blossoms in spring time and in autumn the magnificent autumn shades of the Lombardy and Normandy poplars are a big attraction for artists, photographers and nature lovers alike. The area is rich with Dinosaur fossils and during winter the surrounding sandstone mountains are often dusted with snow.

A large full-length driving range is located adjacent to the Clubhouse as well as a manicured putting green. The Club has a fleet of 30 golf carts for rental to golfers. A fully stocked Pro Shop is located in the Clubhouse.

‘A short yet challenging golf course surrounded by awe inspiring natural beauty, a real hidden gem’. Due to the hilly terrain of the area the Clarens has a good many elevated tees. The quirkiness of the course, which is just 5 991 metres, is what is most appealing to members and visitors. The Clarens is very much a weekend, holiday and summer golfing venue. The Clubhouse and Golf Estate have separate entrances and this allows players and visitors to access the course without going through the Estate security process. larens Brewery is one of the country’s first Brew-Pub, Cidery and Distillery set in the foot-hills of the magnificent Maluti Mountains where our fun-loving team has the thrill of brewing, talking, serving and enjoying great beers, ciders and distillate, all whilst being part of the fantastic craft revolution that is sweeping our country. Our brewer, Stephan Meyer, is a true beer lover

We brew 8000 litres a month on an 800 litre stainless steel system. We hand craft full-grain ales with the finest malts and hops sourced both locally and internationally with no compromise on quality and have been doing so since 2006. We have 8 ales in our standard range complimented by various seasonal ales and festival specials. Winter in our neck of the woods can be severe but love it since we brew Trappist style Ales to bolster us through. Stephan built the majority of the brewery himself from reclaimed vessels from the dairy and chemical industries – a fact that he is very

and was blown away by the variety of beers during a trip to the UK in the early 90’s and could not wait to start brewing his own. Our pure fruit ciders were born of a need to use all the fruits of our apple and cherry orchards and making cider is so much more fun than making jam! The love of brewing and distilling drives us to innovate and develop new products all the time. Our passion for this fledgling industry motivates us to talk to, educate, challenge and transform the novice or traditional consumer into a craft aficionado and to engage with fellow-brewers to constantly learn, share and brew! proud of. We brew close to 200,000 litres of cider under our Red Stone Cider label each year on a belt press imported from Austria in 2005 with apples, berries and cherries sourced from the local farmers. We have a range of fruit juices as well; Apple, Cherry & Pineapple. We distil both whiskey and apple brandy in a 1000l column distil affectionately called The Hunkeler. (It’s a long story). And finally (for now) our Red Stone range of fruit liqueurs are all made from local fruit. We offer free tasters and brewery tours and have a delicious lunch menu focusing on German style sausages, local organic cheeses, local breads, relishes and pickles. And our own cherry or apple juice is free for the little ones.

For us the kicker is seeing the faces of our visitors as they go through the taster panel and finding a favourite. We love explaining the nuances, flavours, styles, techniques and more. Besides a great love enjoying fine beers we’re on a mission to provide the best quality beers and ciders that we possibly can and to sway a commercial beer or cider drinker into starting the journey of discovery into the delicious world of craft beer and cider.

January | February 2020

It’s important to us to support and grow the industry and we work hard, every day, at building its image, creating a demand and preaching the craft-gospel. Most of all we love our brewery, our team, our little village and of course, beer!

JOHN COLLIER 2020

ANNUAL SURVEY ON

South African Golf Courses 2020 THE YEAR OF GOOD GOVERNANCE Welcome to a brand-new golfing year filled with high expectation and genuine promise. The data from the 2019 John Collier Questionnaires received from golf clubs throughout South Africa has been analysed and these results will be published in the 13th John Collier Annual Survey on South African Golf Courses in early March 2020. During this time all clubs participating in the Survey are ranked on three levels namely GOLD Compliance Level, SILVER Compliance Level and BRONZE Compliance Level and on World Environment Day in June 2020 the TOP CLUB in South Africa will be announced. As an example, congratulations must go to The Clarens Golf Estate who achieved SILVER COMPLIANCE LEVEL for the period 2018/2019.

Clarens Facebook Page

This 13th John Collier Annual Survey provides an essential tool for chairmen, management committees and club management of golf courses as well as industry representative bodies and constitutes a benchmark for all golf clubs to measure themselves against latest trends. The focus for 2020 will be on encouraging GOLFRSA, the Golfing Associations, the Provincial Unions and Clubs throughout South Africa to have a closer look at governance compliance and where necessary make practical changes. Ryder Cup stars lead tributes to 'Edinburgh Jimmy'

F

ormer Ryder Cup Captain Paul McGinley and 12-time European Tour winner Ian Poulter led the tributes to the legendary European Tour caddie Ian James Rae, better known as Edinburgh Jimmy, who died on Thursday January 2, aged 64.

Rae was a popular character on the European Tour for more than two decades, having caddied for much of McGinley’s career. He also carried the bag for Poulter, Mark Roe and Robert Lee, among many others. McGinley said: “I have lost not just my longtime caddie but a great friend too. He started to work for me in 1992 and never once did he ever turn up unshaven, not

freshly clothed or in bad humour. Above all I witnessed the trait of eternal loyalty from him - always in your corner even if he would never admit it! He had a wisecrack for everybody and was an important part of our player/caddy dynamic inside the team room at the Ryder Cup in Gleneagles, as he kept the mood light and fun for all of us.” Poulter spoke of his admiration of Rae extensively in his book ‘No Limits’, writing: “You have to like your caddie, and I liked Jimmy. He was on the bag for my first three years on the European Tour and he is probably the most generous, kind-hearted person I have ever met. He’d give you his last ten pounds. That’s why people love him.”

More than 70,000 spectators attended the event, helping to raise £472,552 for the Foundation, which donates 100 per cent of its fundraising revenues to projects working to help, inspire and educate children, with Sir Graham Wylie covering all the running costs of the charity.Wylie, who was recognised in the UK’s New Year’s honours list, was instrumental in the Betfred British Masters returning to Close House from July 30 – August 2, when former World Number One and Ryder Cup legend Lee Westwood, Close House’s Touring Professional, will become the first player to host the tournament on two occasions.

A M AT E U R N E W S Province ended in a draw on day two, the Roses rallied on keep their title defence on track with a decisive win against Gauteng North (8 – 4). The fight was far from over, though. Jack Turton guided Ekurhuleni to the winner’s circle in East London in 2017 and again at Benoni Country Club last year. With Southern Cape, Central Gauteng and Western Province just 2 points back and still in with a shout, he had one message for his charges. “Uncle Jack told us we had to beat Southern Cape and it would be tough because the guys would have the local support. We knew Central Gauteng and Western Province would come out guns blazing, so we had to keep fighting for that win,” said young skipper Warwick Purchase. Central Gauteng had a clean sweep in their Foursomes against Gauteng North and Western Province led North West 2.5 – 1.5, but Ekurhuleni had the edge on Southern Cape, too. “We led them 2.5 – 1.5 and I told them to fight for every point in the Singles and to keep on fighting until our last putt dropped,” Turton said. “I am incredibly proud of this team. Their determination and their will to succeed was amazing and I especially loved their team spirit and the way they supported each other, right up to the very end.” The four rookies led the challenge in the Singles. Christopher Bagnall at number 8 defeated Jay Nathwani 3 & 2 and Carel Tromp at number 6 ousted Ivan Verster 4 & 2 to take the team to 4.5 points. “Giaconi Middel (1 & 3) and Grant Ferreira (1 & 2) had narrow losses, and it was down to our veterans to get the job done. And they really dig their heels in to get us the win,” said Turton. “Yurav (Premlall) at number 2 was always up in his game, but the others were all down. Mujahid Jacobs put up a massive fight, but Yurav closed out a 2-up win to take us to 5.5 points. Then Warwick won the 15th hole and won it for us with a 2 & 1 result against Barend Botha.”

January | February 2020

The rest of team cheered on Ryan van Velzen, who downed James Murray 2 & 1, and number 1 Casey Jarvis, who defeated Southern Cape number 1 Damian Osner 1-up to seal an 8.5 – 3.5 victory for Ekurhuleni. Technical adviser and assistant manager Rob van Velzen said the team’s preparation for the premier junior team event was key to their success. “We had some Foursomes practise sessions before we came down to Oubaai and we also worked on ball striking with our rookies,” he said. “Coming from the highveld, the boys are used to hitting the ball very high, and since we knew we would be facing the wind at the coast, we taught the boys some finesse in keeping the ball lower and controlling the spin of the ball. “As expected, the veterans on the team were brilliant, but hats off to the rookies, who did a fantastic job for us in the windy conditions, especially over the first three days.” “Uncle Jack put the belief in us that we could win it,” he said. “Just like he did when we were rookies in East London and last year. And he created a great team environment. We fought hard, but we had a lot of fun. “Uncle Jack and Uncle Rob give us that space. We made lifelong friendships in our Junior IPTs over the years that we will carry through our lives. I’m super, super proud of the team, especially in the way that we hung tough in the final round to finish the week unbeaten. Winning IPTs is a team effort, and every guy on our team put his hand up this week.” Van Velzen also secured the top spot in the Most Valuable Player standings for the week, banking the full 12 points on offer. Central Gauteng’s Nikhil Rama was second on 11 points, and Ekurhuleni captain Purchase took third on 10.5 points. Jarvis was fourth on 10 points, while Kian Rose, Sam Mackenzie and Amilkar Bhana from the Lions shared fifth on 9.5 points with Jordan Wessels from North West.

B-SECTION Twelve months after their surprise relegation at Benoni CC, former hat-trick winners KZN reclaimed their place in the A-Section with a dominant performance in the Southern Cape. The side mowed down Mpumalanga (11 – 1) and Limpopo (11.5 – 0.5) on day one, routed Free State (11 – 1) and Northern Cape (11 – 1) on the second day and knocked out Border (8.5 – 3.5) on day three to win the promotion battle. “We came into the final round after a fourth round bye and knowing we already won the B-Section and it a little tough to motivate the guys, but they went out there determined to try their best,” said delighted manager Joseph Kunene. We surrendered just 7 points in our first five matches and that’s what counts. “It was a delight to watch the way this team gelled and fought for each other. They are a great bunch of guys who never took their eye off the prize and I am really proud of their achievement. We are back in the A-Section where we belong and that’s all that matters.” The Most Valuable Player’s list spoke volumes of KwaZulu-Natal’s fantastic effort at Oubaai. Jack Cubitt topped the standings with a clean sweep of 12 points. Mitchel Hampson was second, having surrendered just half a point. The team’s captain Kyle Kistensamy and Sean Paxton tied for third on 10 points with

84

“Having learned our golf at the coast, we could really use our skills and shape our shots into the wind, especially over the first three days and that was a huge advantage over the rest of the players,” said Kistensamy. “We got our Foursomes pairings spot on and won almost every game, which also gave us a huge advantage heading into the Singles. I’m so proud of the team and it’s great that we can all share in this victory. We prepared really hard for this and it’s an awesome feeling to pull it off.”

Five things to know: South African Open 1 - Historic national Open. The South African Open, which was first played in 1893, is the second oldest national Open in all of golf — only The Open Championship pre-dates it. 2 - Home heroes. Since it became a European Tour event there have been 23 editions of the South African Open. The tournament has been won by South Africans an astounding 13 times during that period. Major Champions Louis Oosthuizen, Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman and Retief Goosen have all claimed the title at least once, while home stars Tim Clark, Brandon Stone, James Kingston, Richard Sterne and David Frost have also lifted the trophy in the tournament co-sanctioned with the Sunshine Tour. For almost a decade, South African players kept the crown on home-soil, winning eight consecutive editions of the tournament between 2002 and 2008. 3 - Kingston is the man. The oldest competitor

90

in the field, Kingston, is also the proud owner of a rare double in South African golf. Having won the South African Open in 2007, the 53-year-old recently collected the Senior SA Open title in style. 4 - Defending Champion. Home star Oosthuizen returns to the South African Open to defend his title, which kick-started a strong campaign in 2019 where he collected a pair of top fives in World Golf Championships events, plus four additional top fives, all of which moved him back into the top 20 of the Official World Golf Ranking. 5 - Open Qualifying. The South African Open is once again part of the Open Qualifying Series, which takes place over 16 events in 11 countries and across five continents. The leading three players in the top ten, who are not already exempt, will earn their place in the field for the 149th Open Championship at Royal St George’s GC.

SA Open trophy’s origins not clear

T

here is a record in a newspaper advertisement in 1909 which refers to the ‘Open Championship Floating Trophy’, which was to be held by the amateur or professional with the lowest score in the SA Open. But there is no indication, either then or since, in the SA Golf Association records regarding how or when the trophy was first acquired or by whom it was presented. It is referred to in all instances as the ‘Open Championship Cup’ or ‘Trophy’. The South African Open was inaugurated in 1903 after a series of exhibition matches had been played in the decade prior to it. It is the second-oldest national open golf championship in the world, with the Open

January | February 2020

Championship being the oldest. It is also the second-oldest sporting competition in South Africa after rugby’s Currie Cup, which was first played for in 1893. The tournament was a 36-hole event until 1908 when it became 72 holes. However, for the next 60 years, it was a three-day event as 36 holes were played on the final day. It was only at the 1969 event at Durban Country Club that it became a four-day event – the format it still maintains today. South Africa’s national open has a long and prestigious history, and getting one’s name on such a trophy is a proud achievement for any golfer, regardless of nationality.

was fortunate enough to work in the Primo Maxx trials with consultant Mark Mahady back in 1996. I then introduced a wall to wall Primo programme at Leopard Creek in 1997. This was a game changer on the kikuyu quality. The immediate reduction in clippings - 50 % less after the first application. On greens this means you able able to maintain a more consistent greens speed throughout the day. We used to lose one foot of time by lunch time without primo.

The semi rough we reduced mowing from twice a week to weekly. The only down side is the ball sits up too well in the semi - the European Tour were amazed when the ball sat up at 75mm height of cut so we had to drop rates below 1 litre/ha. The semi rough rates are typically half that of fairways.

On fairways we were able to reduce mowing from 7 days per week to 4 days per week. Not only were we saving time and money but producing darker green, tighter fairways which far improved ball lie, colour and plant health as the nutrients are now concentrated in a smaller area.

It is a useful tool which can be used at home or on any sports surface to make you look like a phenomenal turf manager! As you can hear I am passionate about a phenomenal product which truly has stood the test of time and is widely used by turf managers around the globe!

After recently working the US Open at Pebble Beach they continue to spray wall to wall Primo Maxx 23 years later however they have now added a pigment (another great tool) as well as wall to wall wetting agents.
