It must be therapeutic or something, but people
Thank you for a most entertaining letter. Yes indeed, why look in the mirror when you can take it out on your caddie or the greenkeeper or the General Manager or whomever!

GM at a golf club, had a habitual whiner who was upset about membership prices, so a deal was made with him. The golfer could pay last year’s membership price if he would desist from complaining. Within a week, he was moaning about pin placements. Reminded of his deal, he promptly paid the difference that between the two years rates. Golf is a humbling sport, and the last thing a golfer wants is to be confronted with an answer that makes sense. Regards Ronald Dyer

Part 3: The Bunker Shot
THE SHO
Make the dreaded bunker your best gol After a fairly good day on the golf course, you now find yourself in the dreaded sand-trap or commonly known as, a bunker. Your heart is racing as you look down on the “small dot” embedded in the mass of sand. If you don’t know how to play out of a bunker, it can turn a perfectly good game of golf into an absolute nightmare.

Here are a few tips to consider, to avoid this situation.
Make sure to s feet slightly w usual. In orde base, dig your stable stance.
Performance Tip brought to you by Karl Lehmacher – BSI Coach
Setup When setting up for a basic bunker shot, you need to focus on the following points: 1. Weight distribution At addressing the ball, you need to position yourself so that approximately 70% of your weight is on your front foot and the other 30% is on the back. Lean slightly forward and bend your knees slightly. 2. Hand Position

KNOW YOUR GOLF CLUB’S
GENERAL MANAGER
Ashley Roestoff - General Manager Jackal Creek Golf Estate
You were a very successful player on the Sunshine Tour since 1992 with 12 professional victories, what made you choose a managerial career after golf? When I decided to stop playing on tour I started teaching, then I became the club pro at Parkview GC, then golf director and eventually ended up being offered the GM position at Jackal Creek and have been here since 2015. What were your biggest highlights of your playing career? I had 99 top 10 finishes in ten years on tour and went two and a half years without missing a cut. 18
You are married to Letitia, who was also a touring professional, where did you guys meet? We were both members at Ruimsig CC. Do your sons also play golf? No they don’t do anything that we do. Who has been your biggest mentor? Nick Price helped me a lot on tour and Gerry Frazer then General Manager at Parkview taught me a lot and assisted me when I became GM at Jackal.
www.sagolftrader.co.za
January | February 2024
What are your biggest challenges as the GM of Jackal Creek GE? We are a new club with little tradition, trying to create tradition is difficult in todays time as tradition seems to be going out the window. Has the golf industry grown in your opinion over the last 3 years? It grew substantially after Covid but this year seems to have died down a bit. With consumers already being careful on how they spend their money these days, what is your plan to attract people to Jackal Creek GE? Our brief is and always has been value for money, creating a good experience at a reasonable cost.
Do you still have short & long term goals? As we are a young club there is still so much to do. I would like to get the course rated in the top 100 in SA and there are so many upgrades that are needed at the clubhouse and as usual it is always a question of finances. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Going fishing and riding my bicycles are my favorite things to do. Do you still get time to play a round of golf? I try to play once a week mainly to get a feel for how the golf course is and to play with our members, also to get a feel for how things are from their side, although sometimes it doesn’t work out like that.
Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life? Yes, I pretty much have to be available 24/7. I try and take off when it’s quiet.

MZANSI CELEBRITIES TEE IT UP FOR A GOOD CAUSE The responsibility to invest in youth development in South Africa lies not only with the government but citizens and the corporate sector also have a duty to prioritize the empowerment of youth in sport and education. This was the central message at the OG Molefe Foundation Invitational, where celebrities and business people teed it up with the aim of raising funds for the OG Molefe Foundation. The Foundation, founded by sports presenter OG Molefe, aims to use golf and education to empower young people from disadvantaged communities around the country.
Kensington, ex-professional footballers, media personalities, former rugby players, and corporates converged for the seventh edition of this ever-growing spectacle. While a round of golf was the order of the day, the principal objective was clear for all. “It’s important for us former sports people to come and support the OG Molefe Foundation,” stated former Springbok, Akhona Ndungane. “A lot of people, once they make it in life, tend to forget that before they were ‘big’, there were people who opened the doors and

VAN DER MERWE CAPS BREAKOUT SEASON WITH FREDDIE TAIT CUP WIN Altin van der Merwe proudly took his place alongside 2023 champion Dean Burmester during the presentation ceremony, excited to receive the prestigious Freddie Tait Cup as the Leading Amateur in the 113th Investec South African Open Championship. The 27-year-old had already wrapped up the award by the Friday evening, emerging as the sole amateur to make the 36-hole cut at Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate, and weekend rounds of 73 and 74 saw him finish in a tie for 57th. “I’ve had a blast,” said Van der Merwe after completing his final round. “I knew when I came out here that it was going to be a tough week. I played pretty solid. I left a couple out there, but I also had some great moments, like the 30m eagle putt on the 18th on moving day. It’s been a dream week, and I am taking much more away than just the Freddie Tait Cup win.” He also got an idea of the scale of the step up required to compete against the world’s best professional golfers.
this season, racking up five provincial wins and impressing abroad with a runner-up finish in the Scottish Men’s Open, a 10th-place finish in the Brabazon Trophy and a tie for 12th in the St Andrews Links Trophy. The Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation member also made his debut alongside world No 1 Lamprecht and Maas in the Eisenhower Trophy in Abu Dhabi in October, where the trio finished seventh, recording South Africa’s best finish in the 33rd World Amateur Team Championship since 1982. Now his name will be etched on the trophy below those of Major champions Bobby Locke, Ernie Els and Trevor Immelman, and other some other legends of the game who went on to win the South African Open including Dale Hayes, Tony Johnstone, Hennie Otto, Branden Grace and Brandon Stone. “It’s ridiculous to think that five days ago, I didn’t even know what the Freddie Tait Cup was. What an incredible honour it is to join some of the greats of the game,” he said.
“I’ve learned that I need to be more precise,” said Van der Merwe. “On every putt, every drive – everything I do. It doesn’t matter what shape you hit or whether you’re coming out of the fairway or the rough, you must be precise because there is very little margin for error. It’s a lot tougher out here.” It’s been quite the year for the Bellville golfer. The GolfRSA No 1 has been in red-hot form

From 1958 to 2000, teams of four players from each country competed over 72 holes with the leading three scores from each round to count. Since the format changed to teams of three with the two leading scores to count in 2002, only one team – Trevor Immelman, Jean Hugo and Dean Lambert – has posted a top 10 with their tie for 10th in Chile.
Christo Lamprecht, Christiaan Maas and Altin van der Merwe added to South Africa’s terrific sporting success with an outstanding performance in the 33rd World Amateur Team Championships in Abu Dhabi. The GolfRSA National Squad trio combined for rounds of 139, 138, 138 and 139 at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club to close out a seventh-place finish on a 22-under-par 554 and achieved the country’s best result since 1982. South Africa has never won the biennial Eisenhower Trophy. Braving sweltering conditions at the desert course, reigning Amateur champion Lamprecht from Southern Cape spearheaded the relentless charge against the best players in the world and fired rounds of 71, 68, 68 and 70. The Georgia Tech standout finished the week on 11-under, good enough for a share of the eighth in the individual competition. Texas University’s Maas produced rounds of 70, 70, 71 and 69 and the Gauteng North golfer tied for 17th, while GolfRSA No 1 Van der Merwe – making his debut in the global showpiece – led the side with an opening three-under 69. Further rounds of 71, 70 and 71 netted the Western Province golfer a share of 24th. The USA-team, led by World No 1 Gordon Sargent, were hotly fancied all week and notched their 16th Eisenhower Trophy title on 36-under 540, finishing a full 11 shots clear of their nearest challengers, Norway and Australia.

BACK TO BACK WINS FOR BURMESTER. An emotional Dean Burmester won the Investec South African Open Championship by three strokes at the Blair Atholl Golf & Equestrian Estate last month to claim back-to-back titles on the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour. Burmester, the winner of the previous week’s Joburg Open, drew on all of his experience to post a final round 68 and add his name to the greats of South African golf with a winning total of 11 under par. “Back-to-back – I’ve never done that before,” said Burmester, who also claims the double of having won both the South African PGA Championship as well as the

Investec South African Open. “To win this championship sponsored by a bank that gave me my first break is very special. It’s very emotional for me. I wanted to win this for the late Sam Hackner of Investec. I was waiting tables to make enough money to play tournaments. I’d go and practice in the morning and be tired because I only got home at 11pm from work. With Investec’s sponsorship, Sam gave me the opportunity to go and fulfil my dream. Six months later I won my first

paved the way for them. “What OG is doing deserves praise and support because, like in many other instances in life, sport, or business, if there is no investment, ideas like these die out. So, private investment becomes important because if we always wait for governments to do things for us, some things never get done. But we have to go out and ask for help from the private sector, and I think OG knows the work he is doing and its importance, and he knows how to go out and ask for assistance. That is key.” Ndungane, whose twin brother, Odwa, was also in this year’s field, is not the only one who feels that citizens and the corporate sector have a responsibility to the South African youth. Media personality, Maps Maponyane, was just as unambiguous in detailing the importance of the initiative. He said every able South African should feel the need to get involved with initiatives of this nature and, where possible, invest as much as they can into the future of young people.
“I must thank everyone who came to support the event,” Molefe started, “you guys are rock stars. As you may know, our programs help a lot of young kids in the townships, and as such, your contributions here today will have a lasting positive impact on the lives of many kids. This is an extra special day, and while we know that there is a lot of work to be done, we are also grateful to those of you who are willing to travel the road with us. “Our aim was to raise R1 million, and even if we didn’t get to that, we are still very grateful to everyone who came and made a contribution.” The field included comedian David Kau, former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns goalie Brian Baloyi, TV personality Sipho Ngwenya, sports anchor Thomas Mlabo, and former Bafana Bafana right-back Jimmy Tau, among the many stars.
“Everyone should want to contribute to making a big change in the lives of young South Africans,” Maponyane said. “My personal passions are youth and education, and I think that is something that the OG Molefe Foundation addresses so well, especially with the skills programs, the education programs, and the sporting programs they have. So to be able to help raise these much-needed funds, and doing so in a way that’s fun for everyone, is absolutely critical, in my opinion.” And the day was not short of fun. Among the highlights of the day was respected football agent, Jazzman Mahlakgane, outbidding everyone to buy a signed Kylian Mbappé World Cup jersey for R42,000, a gesture that Molefe described

DEAN BOOKS A SPOT AT OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP WITH JO’BURG OPEN WIN Dean Burmester didn’t have much time to properly prepare for the Joburg Open, but it didn’t matter. The feeling of being back home and the passion of the fans were enough as Burmester won the Joburg Open by three strokes at Houghton GC in December. With a final round of 64, Burmester claimed his third DP World Tour title on 18 under par and at the same time booked his place in next year’s Open at Royal Troon as the first of the top three finishers not already exempt for the Major. “We recently bought a house in Florida and were busy moving so there wasn’t January | February 2024
much time to prepare for this event,” said the now US-based Burmester. “But when I landed here I did some great preparation in the practice rounds and that set the tone for me. I felt comfortable on the golf course.” His comfort level certainly showed in a final round where overnight leader Thriston Lawrence suddenly struggled with his game on his way to a 75 and a share of seventh place, Darren Fichardt came charging through the field with a 64 to finish second on 15 under par, and defending champion Dan Bradbury also made a run at it with a 64 of his own to

ASHLEIGH BUHAI AND JOAQUIN NIEMANN WIN AUSTRALIAN OPEN TITLES
Ashleigh Buhai retained the title in the women’s Australian Open, which was played in parallel on the same course. She held off Australia’s Minjee Lee to win by a single stroke at 9 under despite shooting a 3-over 75. Buhai started the day with a three-stroke lead over former world No. 1 Shin Ji-yai, and none of her rivals was able to close the gap even after she dropped three shots on the back nine. Minjee Lee, seven strokes back at the start of the day, got within a shot after Buhai went into the water at the 17th, but the 2022 Women’s British Open champion held her nerve to claim

the title with a par putt at the last. “I’m so proud to defend my title,” Buhai said. “I knew they had to come catch me, so I just played smart golf. Most of the crowd were supporting Minjee, but it was a lot of fun out there.” Joaquin Niemann mastered the Sydney winds to become the first Chilean winner in 119 years of the Australian Open when he beat Japan’s Rikuya Hoshino in a playoff to lift the Stonehaven Cup.

wreaked havoc with the local contenders.
Niemann lipped out a 4-foot eagle putt on the first playoff hole at No. 18 but made no mistake on the second, draining a slightly longer eagle attempt to add a first DP World Tour title to the two he has won on the PGA circuit.
Min Woo Lee, the younger brother of Minjee, and Hoshino shared the overnight lead and were expected to reprise their duel, but Adam Scott and Lucas Herbert made early charges to share the lead.
“It means a lot,” Niemann, who also qualified for The Open, told reporters. “This season wasn’t the best for me. I wanted to play more golf. It was huge to come up here and play good golf and get a result.” In a wild final round, Niemann shot a 5-under 66 to take the clubhouse lead. Hoshino joined him at 14 under when he completed a round of 70 some 90 minutes later. Min Woo Lee, who beat Hoshino in a Sunday duel to win the Australian PGA Championship last week, came up short in his bid to go back-to-back after a 71 and had to settle for third place at 12 under. Overnight storms cleared to make way for a bright, sunny morning at The Australian Golf Club, but the wind had already started building and increased in speed until it

Scott, the former Masters champion, edged ahead of the leading pack with his eighth birdie at his 16th hole, but his next tee shot landed in an unplayable lie against a fence and he took a triple-bogey. Herbert also had a triple-bogey at No. 8 to tumble out of contention, leaving Niemann and Englishman Alex Fitzpatrick, brother of 2022 U.S. Open champion Matt, top of the leaderboard at 13 under. Niemann had flirted with disaster on his first playing of No. 18 when his tee shot went into the crowd and he had to fire an iron shot over diners before walking away with a sixth birdie. “I didn’t know where I was hitting, I didn’t know where the water was, I didn’t know where the bunker was,” Niemann said. “As soon as I hit it, I just listened for the crowd’s reaction. Fortunately it was good.”

In 1923 a visitor described the course as “A monument to the origins of golf played on a South African links next to a southern sea” Not much has changed since then. The undulating course snakes its way through thickets of pristine coastal forest and over hilly dunes always with the smell and sounds of the Indian Ocean close by whose blue waters offer the most panoramic views from many of the fairways. In true links tradition every slope, mound and dip remains untouched, demanding creative shot making and deft reading of angles. Adding to the allure and charm of the course is its resident wild life. Normally shy bushbuck will continue grazing contently as you walk by while springbok and impala pronk with delight. The blesbok, fallow deer duiker and giant tortoise peer at the golfers with suspicion and there is bird life in abundance. Come and see for yourself.

For 85 years they have been providing premier accommodation, sumptuous buffet meals and an exceptional outdoor leisure experience surrounded by the magnificent peaks of some of the World Heritage Site’s most iconic mountains. Cathedral Peak Hotel’s crowning jewel is their 9-hole course, with alternate tees for an 18-hole game. John Collier Survey CHAMPAGNE SPORTS RESORT GOLF COURSE RATED AS AT A GOLD COMPLIANCE LEVEL
From a golfing experience, one of the more enjoyable occurrences and dream destinations is playing golf high up the Drakensberg Mountains. This area is also known as uKhahlamba, the Barrier of Spears, which and from a golfing perspective, this area may be split into two separate golfing areas - Northern Berg and Southern Berg. Some of the Northern Berg golf courses include, Amphitheatre Golf Club, Cathedral Peak Golf Course, Champagne Sports Golf Course, and Monks Cowl Golf Course, and while the Southern Berg includes courses such as Drakensberg Gardens, Sani Pass and Underberg Country Club. Since the Covid 19 pandemic, visiting the Berg should surely be on many golfer’s to do list. The Berg possesses natural and cultural diversity that supports a domestic and globally compelling tourism proposition. The area also has outstanding ecological richness, set in distinct biomes and protected, through areas such as a World Heritage Site, national parks, game and nature reserves and of course, the area’s golf courses. While in attracting golfers and tourists to the Berg, it cannot be ignored that tourism is recognised for its immense revenues’ potential and its significant contribution that it can make to the economy of the Berg. The recently published Tourism Sector Master Plan refers to two guiding principles namely January | February 2024
Responsible Tourism, which means all tourism development and activities shall deliver on the triple bottom-line, namely economic, social and environmental sustainability, and also in terms of Service Excellence; being the latter requiring that the entire industry, including non-tourism service providers, should continually strive for service excellence towards all our tourists. On an annual basis the John Collier Annual Survey analyses data received from clubs throughout South Africa, in order to arrive at a national good governance and environmental compliance level. For the 2022 / 2023 year of review, the compliance level result indicated that some work still needs to be done in this area. In terms of the Berg golf courses, the one club that stands out, as a leader for several years for good governance and environmental compliance, is the Champagne Sports Resort Golf Course being rated as at a GOLD COMPLIANCE LEVEL. Golf Clubs are encouraged to participate in this national benchmark initiative. The benefits include, ensuring good governance and environmental compliance, gaining knowledge and skills, building reputation and strengthening the marketability of your club. Golf course superintendent Champagne Sports Resort
You started out as a player, then became a PGA Professional, when did you realise that turf management was the industry you wanted to take further? After playing 9 years on the local Sunshine Tour and, having played professionally on numerous courses around the world over the years, I started noticing & developing an interest in understanding the science behind turf management.
to say that we have been consistently ranking higher & higher each year in the top 100 golf courses in RSA - we are currently ranked 27th in 2023. The worst part is the unpredictability of the weather these days - albeit I have the best in weather radar systems etc, it is always unpredictable to a varying degree.
What is the best and worst part of being a golf course superintendent? The best part is the satisfaction I gain from doing a job that is not only a passionate interest of mine, golf, but also the reward in seeing the course improve in status with players over the years - and I’m very proud
You are also the Golf Director at Champagne Sports Resort, in the heart of the Drakensberg, what are your biggest challenges on and off the course? With this being a resort it is always a challenge to keep the course in a pristine 74

It is extremely important to do so especially on larger & busier golf courses, because they endure high traffic volumes, they endure greater wear & tear / stress on the grounds & it therefore becomes more difficult to maintain. EAGLE-EYED AND UNSTOPPABLE: DANIEL BENNETT’S 2023 TRIUMPHS SET THE STAGE FOR A BRIGHT FUTURE IN GOLF South African golf sensation, Daniel Bennett, recently faced the prospect of shattering multiple South African records and tying the world record for the lowest 72-hole total ever recorded at the 2023 Nomads SA Boys Under 19 Stroke Play Championship. Bennett braced himself and went on to win the tournament. What followed next was a year that has made him one of the most talked about young aspiring golfers in the country. For the 17-year-old, the memory remains vivid. “I can still remember how hard my heart was beating with two holes left to play during the tournament I could barely breathe.”
78
“This year has been a dream come true for me. The memories I have from that tournament will never go away.’’ Held at the Pecanwood Golf and Country Estate, in April, this milestone forms part of a massive year that has seen him beat the best amateurs in the country, win several tournaments on the amateur circuit, break 36-year-old records, and still manage to have time to write matric exams. “Juggling school and golf has been very

I owe a big part of my achievements this year to my parents and my coaching team, they always keep me grounded and moving in the right direction,” he explained. The popularity of golfing reality shows like Full Swing, and the constant presence of golfers on ‘most paid athletes’ lists has helped reignite a passion for the sport among young South Africans. Over the year, Bennett has emerged as one of the country’s brightest talents and at his age he is already helping train the next generation of stars through golf clinics hosted by Vuma, South Africa’s largest fibre network operator.
January | February 2024
“The Vuma Golf Clinics have been great. I really enjoy helping the community and this gives me the opportunity to help other junior golfers hone their skills. The Vuma team does an outstanding job at looking for talented young people who don’t have the opportunity I’ve been given,” Bennett says, Lianne Williams, Marketing Director at Vuma says, “We are always looking for interesting ways to help and empower young people to unlock and discover their hidden talents. Through the golf clinics, we have been able to do just that and, in the process, give young people from diverse backgrounds to live out their Ernie Els-sized dreams.” If 2023 is anything to go by, the sky is the limit for Daniel Bennett, and it may not be long before the country is once again cheering for a South African Master’s champion.

GARY PLAYER AND FRIENDS KEEP BLAIR ATHOLL SCHOOLS DREAM ALIVE The Gary & Vivienne Player Invitational celebrated another memorable weekend in which business leaders, sports stars, celebrities and Sunshine Tour professionals rallied in support of a dream to keep changing lives as they raised R3 million for the Blair Atholl Pre-Primary School. Gary Player was overwhelmed by the response to helping ensure the sustainability of the school he and his late wife, Vivienne, started in 1990 and which the Gary & Vivienne Player Foundation and its partners continue to
support through this tournament at the Lost City Golf Course. “I have been blessed to have experienced great success in my career and life, and for that I am truly grateful. I am overwhelmed by the show of support from all the wonderful people this weekend who gave up their time to be with us and to help me keep a promise to my late wife Vivienne that we will ensure the future of the Blair Atholl Pre-Primary School we both started all those years continued on page 88...
Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. The course layout has remained largely unchanged and as a result, one of Umkomaas' unique features are the raised greens, thanks to over 100 years of top-dressings and treatments. Although not overly long, the course offers a great challenge for low handicappers, especially when the coastal winds blow. It is however forgiving for even an occasional golfer making it the perfect option for families and groups. Well placed bunkers and undulating fairways mean that those seeking to card a low round need to think their way around the course whilst those looking to simply have fun will enjoy themselves too. Umkomaas is a great choice for those wanting to get the whole family out into the fresh air. We offer exceptional family membership packages and the opportunity to learn to play via our KidzGolf programme. Living up to our reputation as the Friendliest Club, Umkomaas offers a warm welcome to visitors both on and off the course. Competitions are held weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays and visitors are always welcome. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

The 36-hole pro-am tournament was won by the team of Sunshine Tour professional Robin Williams, business leaders Neil and Pam Senior, and chef and restaurateur Reuben Riffel on 188 points. But more important than the trophy is the fact that this event once again brought together what has over the
years become a close family of people who know the value of opportunity and what it can mean in a child’s life. “It’s incredible to be part of this cause and the legacy of Mr and Mrs Player that started 30 years ago. It’s a privilege to take this forward into the future and change people’s lives and change our country for the better. The school caters for children between the ages of three and six years old and it’s such an honour and privilege to make a difference in their lives, and it’s our responsibility as South Africans to do so,” said Reon Barnard, a trustee of the Gary & Vivienne Player Foundation and continued on page 92...

Whatever happene I was born in Hwange in what was then Rhodesia, my dad worked on the colliery. As a kid I played football and squash and at about the age of 12 I started caddying for my step dad and from there I got into the game. My passion grew when we moved to Polokwane as the far-north was a very strong golf union. I played as a junior with an amazing group including Retief Goosen, the Pappas brothers, Callie Swart, and others. “My passion grew when we moved to Polokwane as

South African junior golf was very strong at that time, you had Ernie, Clinton Whitelaw, Brett Liddle and many more. After school I quit the game for a while and then whilst in the Airforce I started again. I turned professional in 1993 and joined the Sunshine Tour. My golf steadily improved and I played for a few years before deciding to get into the industry.
I had a few playing highlights, e of golf on tour and the amazing problem was always the financ did not play for a lot in South A Wild Coast, where I stayed in th Venda Sun. The room was free, cost was telephone calls. I was y phone account was more than tournament.
Interestingly, I only made the cu because I teed off third on 13th and after watching both my partners hit it in the ravine, I hit driver, I think it was a 40kmh wind. One of my highlights was winning as a club pro in Swaziland on 13 under for 3 rounds.

a director of the Blair Atholl Pre-Primary School. It’s a message that was echoed by many of the participants at this year’s tournament. “Whenever we are blessed with good fortune in life, you need to pay it forward. Enjoying life and the successes in life is made even better if you can share that and open doors for others as well. That was the overriding feeling from this weekend,” said Riffel.
also attended the event this weekend and shared his story of how opportunity changed his life. “I was 16 and growing up poor in the nearby village of Ledig when we were recruited in the late 1970s by Mr Player for the first caddie training programme at Sun City. I am where I am because of that opportunity. Mr Player saw something in me and it was a life-changing opportunity that I was given,” said Rasego, who went on to caddie for Gary Player in his victory in the 1988 Senior Open as well as Louis Oosthuizen when he won the 2010 Open and a host of other top professionals.

And South African rugby icon Naas Botha also expressed perfectly the spirit of this tournament to use golf to change lives. “Gary Player has played a part in all South African sportsman asking the question, ‘How am I going to contribute through my sport?’. Talking T
Plan for P By: Sue de Zwart
It’s a new year with new opportunities. A check list to ensure we have all our ducks in a row. 1. Irrigation (including pumps & pipelines) – this is the heart & soul of the course and ultimately determines your playing surface quality. Irrigation replacement Plan (20 year plan) 2. Drainage – excess water in the profile leads to diseases, moss & algae. When constructing a green we select the sands based on the infiltration rate and do the bridging factor test to ensure the sand does not infiltrate the gravel layer. Days lights – the point at which the water runs out the green must be visible – able to freely flow & not drain below water should it be draining into a dam. If day lights are below the water level it is best to add a sump pump (simple & cost effective). 3. Equipment Replacement Plan (10 year plan – your equipment supplier can assist you to do this). Maintenance of your equipment is critical. A sound leasing plan is a very cost effective way to keep an ERP rolling and ensure good buy backs from your supplier just as you would for your
personal motor vehicle. Without regular servicing & trade ins you find yourself in a very costly position with a lot of down time. 4. Staff organogram & HR policies. Staff training plan – monthly team training in huddles – e.g. greens mowers, bunkers etc. 5. Sounds agronomics – annual soil nutrient testing – one good, medium & weak fairway, tees. Greens – best to test all 18 to ensure similar. Once you establish this you can test 3-6 every 6 months. We use Labserve in Nelspruit – they have consistently giving us great results since 1997. 6. Nematodes – Dr. Mieke Daneel from the ARC in Nelspruit is a world renown nematologist. Should you be interested in joining our 2023 free nematode testing – 3 fairways, 3 greens, 3 tees (courier at your cost) please contact Willem@talkingturf.co.za. Mieke and I are presenting a paper on nematodes (free living, spiral, sheath & root knot) at the International Turfgrass Research Conference in Japan 2025. Willem & I will be taking a group to this conference should you be interested to in joining us please email Willem.
Turf Tips
Perfection 7. IPM – integrated pest management – targeting the right pest at the right time & making responsible, informed decisions. Talking Turf work closely with our clients in Southern Africa – reviewing annual soil results & adjusting IPM timing to ensure we are following the most cost effective, sustainable practices for your golf course. Please feel free to email your latest soil results to sue@talkingturf.co.za or willem@talkingturf.co.za – this is a service we offer our client base. 8. Cultural practices – hollow tyning twice per annum is really important. (brooming sand into the holes breaks down the organic material by abrasive action). The best greens you see are those which are hollow tyned at their peak – don’t wait for problems to arise on the playing surface. 2 weeks annual closure for your golf course (spring & autumn treatment) is the best money you will spend. This can be planned around your peak golf rounds – how many rounds per month – map these trends. Know that poa germinates in April & August – avoid these months is you don’t want to increase your poa content. Best not to do cultural practices in high heat – ideally soils temps between 18 & 25 degrees Celsius.
You can use the latest app Syngenta have funded for South Africa – Turf Advisor- to guide you on soil temps. We look forward to working together to produce your ultimate playing surface within your budget through sound maintenance practices.

TURNING BACK THE CLOCK is the Golfer from the past?
WHO
• Our mystery golfer was born on April 22, 1938, in Washington, D.C. • He attended the University of Maryland, where he was a two-time All-American on the Terrapins golf team. • He qualified for the U.S. Open at age 17 in 1955. • He won the U.S. Amateur twice, in 1960 & 1963 and the British Amateur in 1959. • He turned professional at the age of 29 and won four times on the PGA Tour between 1969 and 1973. • Injuries curtailed his playing career, so he retired as a player, closed his business practice, and became the PGA Tour Commissioner. • He was the second commissioner of the PGA Tour, serving from 1974 to 1994. • He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2000 and was awarded the seventh PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. this one and it’s very special. This and the SA Open are the two events in South Africa that I always wanted to win. I’m very happy,” said Oosthuizen after a final round of 69 and a winning total of 18 under par.
A storm on the Sunday and the subsequent suspension of the final round forced the tournament into a Monday finish. But after twice finishing runner-up in this event, Oosthuizen was happy to wait as long as needed to claim a title he has desperately wanted.
Charl Schwartzel finished second on 16 under par with a closing 71, while Christiaan Bezuidenhout took third place on 14 under par with a final round of 68. Oosthuizen and Schwartzel were tied for the lead on 16 under par through seven

“I didn’t have a great lie on 17 and ended up making bogey there and then on 18 I made par the hard way. But that’s what this golf course does. It’s such a good finishing golf course that you need to just hold on.”
“I knew Charl was going to be around all day because he likes this golf course and he knows how to play it. I think it was those three putts (for birdie) that got me ahead. It’s tough to be very aggressive over the last few holes so I could sort of just hang on to making pars,” said Oosthuizen.
