WINNING LETTER Dear Editor I recently heard someone say that the days of a father playing ball outside with the children were on the way out. They implied that interactive computer games such as Wii were taking over and that children from now on would start to abandon traditional sports and become addicted to their television sets and computers. What a lot of nonsense! I have young children and it seems to me that outdoor activities are alive and well with children longing for simple pleasures such as kicking a ball or hitting a ball around the garden. Golf in particular is a perfect activity as it provides uninterrupted family time outdoors and is also a great way to spend quality time with your family and friends! It is great exercise in a beautiful setting. Studies show that walking the golf course lessens levels of bad cholesterol, burns calories, prevents heart disease, and helps oxygenate the body and improve posture. Golf helps children learn how to focus and teaches great life lessons - respect, integrity, sportsmanship, camaraderie and problem solving. It is also an excellent business tool for networking when they get older.

Dear Branson I could not agree with you more. Though computer games and the like are very much a part of life today there can very few things better than playing rugby, soccer, golf or whatever in the park with your children. When it comes to golf I think that more children should be encouraged to visit driving ranges and that a round of golf needs to become more of a family activity. In addition children should be encouraged to attend golf tournaments as they do for rugby, soccer, cricket etc. Regards

He just loves it so much.” Gough believes it’s essential for anybody starting the game to get the basics right with a PGA professional. “I can see immediately if somebody has been taught properly as a child. The fundamentals that Ben Hogan used are still the same today. The basics of grip, alignment and posture haven’t changed. If you get the basics right from an early age, then you have a much better platform from which to go forward. I’ve got no doubt that you don’t have to be a natural at ball sports to play good golf. You can be taught to become a better player, and that’s the beauty of this game. That’s where your PGA pro becomes invaluable.” As golf instruction now goes digital, Gough recalls one instance where good old-fashioned experience cannot be replaced. “French professional Victor Dubuisson played the Masters for the first time earlier this year. His caddie, Mick Doran, is one of the most experienced in the game. During their practice round at Augusta National, Mick was telling Victor where to hit it, how to read the greens and so on. That’s when Victor stopped him and said, ‘Mick, don’t worry. I know this course. I’ve played it many times on PlayStation’.”

ory McIlroy, winner of two major titles in 2014, was announced by Sir Michael Parkinson, the President of the Sports Journalists’ Association, as the 65th winner of the SJA’s Sportsman of the Year award. The awards were announced at a gala ceremony in central London, sponsored by The National Lottery, and attended by nearly 400 celebrity guests from sport, politics and the media. The SJA’s British Sports Awards are determined by votes by the Association’s members. McIlroy finished ahead of F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton and Commonwealth and European long jump gold medal-winner Greg Rutherford in the ballot.

SPIKE MARKS, ALL GONE!
KNOW YOUR RULES
CAN SPIKE MARKS IN LINE OF PUTT BE REPAIRED? No, you may not repair spike marks or tap down any other sprigs of grass on the green that you fear might affect your putt's roll. You are allowed to repair ballmarks (and should always do so). It's a common sight with recreational players: A player lines up his or her putt, then walks that line between the ball and the hole using the putter to tamp down blades of grass or other imperfections in the green. However, it is encouraged that all players, after finishing a hole, tap down any stray blades of grass that they might encounter as they leave the green.

Driven to succeed! Bunker Play 101 - The “controlled duff!” by Paul Cuningham, PGA Qualified Teaching Professional at Eagle Canyon your Cleveland lob wedge or sand wedge to exit the sand. This helps flight the ball and improves spin rate on your shots. It’s also important to set your weak grip position onto your club relative to the club face angle that you will either bounce or dig the ball out of the sand with depending on your lie.
T
he ideal grip for great bunker shots is with a weak grip (frame 2). This grip would normally help slice or cut shots on the golf course but over the short splashed distances that we hit green side bunker shots, there is no curve in the air to the ball other than a slight “block” towards the right that we get relative to our body line. Also, take into account some potential side spin on the landing area! A weak fingers grip allows for more hinge, which intern allows the bounce of the club to effectively bottom out underneath the ball and helps

A. The angle of deviation towards the right, for right handed golfers, when making your swing is determined by the amount you open your club face at address. Never open it more than 45 degrees, there won’t be any club face to strike the ball with ;-) Remember the more you open the club face the more bounce you create and the shallower the divot you will make. The bounce angle at the bottom of your club and the texture of the sand will also determine how far left you have to aim. In an ideal scenario on consistent sand and a flat lie, if we were to align ourselves parallel to our target and swung straight back and through along our target line, we would get an idea of the amount of deviation towards the right that the ball goes. This would determine how far left we should actually aim to get the ball on target.

B. Often you watch golfers play bunker shots with a very wide stance and over flexed knees. As much as this does over stabilize the base and restrict lower half movement, it also taxes the body structure and it’s potential for dynamic movement. It’s better to stand just slightly wider then shoulder width apart and position the ball in the middle of your stance for a beginner with a high bounce sand wedge. For the better player a slightly forward, almost long iron ball position is ideal for the low bounce lob wedge. The forward ball position does help flight the ball, helps shallow out the strike and creates far better spin control. But, beware, you must have a good dynamic swing movement to strike the ball consistently in this forward ball position. “Plugged lies” or “fried eggs” are best played in the centre of your stance for a steeper angle of attack into the sand.

C. To strike the sand consistently behind your Z-star golf ball, focus about another Z-star behind it. You need to be dynamically balanced on the balls of your feet and happy with your space from the ball before you dig your feet into the sand. Never dig your heels in as you will cramp your space hitting your shots to heavy at times or sometimes fall off shots thinning them across the green. Never dig your feet to deep into the sand - you’re just lowering your swing arc down to much and may also hit the sand heavy at times! Just dig your feet in low enough to stabilize your base and to get a feel for the texture or amount of sand that hopefully lies beneath your ball. This will also give you an idea of how much you need to set the face angle open for the bounce needed. Set your spine angle nice and straight for an optimum strike into the sand - chin up and bum out, give yourself room to swing freely - this will also help shallow out your strike if need be.

D. There are two types of actions needed for quality bunker play - the wide arc, shallow strike, flighted option and the narrow arc, quick set technique. The “wristy” quick set technique is ideal for short high spin splashes just out of the bunker on tight pins within a 10 meter zone. The wider, fuller swings are better for the longer green side bunker shots from about 15 meters (the max range for the lob wedge) to around 30 meters (the max range for a gap wedge. The maximum range for a full sand wedge is around the 20 to 25 meter zone. E. Swing length determines shot distance. Find your maximum range for each of your Cleveland wedges, then learn to control the length of your backswings & follow-throughs for specific distance control - Full to full, three quarter to full, half to full, half to three quarter, half to half and so on... Learn to dial into your numbers and back yourself to hole them!

nnika Sörenstam, widely regarded as the greatest female golfer of all time, is to design her first course in Europe, at Estonian Golf & CC. The new course, which will complement the venue’s acclaimed Sea Course, rated among Europe’s top 100 courses*, is part of a major development to create a family leisure resort and spa overlooking the Gulf of Finland. Sörenstam has been selected both for the calibre of her design work – she has designed three courses worldwide to date – and her appreciation of a project that is targeting families and golf tourists from Scandinavia and the rest of Europe. The new 18-hole course will replace the existing 9-hole Stone Course at Estonian Golf & Country Club, and will complement the championship Sea Course, which in 2011 hosted European qualifying for the Omega Mission Hills World Cup. Using the long, native grasses and firm turf, the course will have a links-like look and feel. Tees will be spread out with the tournament course measuring 6,445m (7,050 yards), while fully constructed forward tees will create a genuine 4,000m (4,375 yards) course for juniors and new golfers. Sörenstam said: “It’s exciting to be designing my first golf course in Europe, especially one that is close to home.

Strydom signs off in style at Harry Oppenheimer Trophy Ekurhuleni’s Tristen Strydom claimed his fourth title of the season at the Harry Oppenheimer Trophy at Maccauvlei GC in a nail-biting finale after Luke Trocado from Western Province narrowly missed forcing the tournament into a play-off.

he reigning Nomads SA Boys U-19 Stroke Play champion carded a one-under-par 71 in the final round and padded his trophy cabinet with a one stroke victory on nine under 279. Trocado romped home in 67 strokes to share the second with Ekurhuleni’s Stefan Cronje, who closed with a 70. The big-hitting Strydom carded rounds of 68, 69 and 71 to share the third round lead with Jason Viljoen from Central Gauteng and Ekurhuleni’s Jason Froneman. “I didn’t know I was leading, but I knew Luke was burning up the course,” said Strydom, who drove the ball exceptionally well and missed only seven greens in 72 holes. “He was closing in fast, but I just kept it simple. I played percentage golf tee to green, and avoided mistakes. It’s great to be in the winner’s circle, especially after I struggled with the putter recently. We’ve got the International Teams next; and it’s great to go into the event on such a high note.”

Ekurhuleni U-13s steal the show at Annual Awards

The 17-year-old Serengeti golfer led South Africa to victory in the Team Competition at the second African Youth Games in Botswana in May and claimed gold in the Individual Boys Competition at Gaborone GC. He was a member of the victorious SA junior team that claimed the country’s 16th consecutive victory in the All-Africa Junior Golf Championship and a member of the four-man team that contested in the TOYOTA Junior Golf World Cup in Japan in June. McClatchie also made a historic debut at the Youth Olympic Games in China in August alongside Gauteng golfer Kaleigh Telfer. Hall took the Girl Player of the Year honours. The Ebotse golfer topped the EGU Order of Merit all season and will be attending a WGSA Talent Identification Camp at the HPC at the University
of Pretoria after an impressive performance for the union at the SA Women’s Inter-Provincial in September last year. Meanwhile Kempton Park’s Jordan, Joshua and Jonathan Wilsenach showed that siblings can work together when they won the 2014 Handicap League alongside Juan Oosthuizen, Tim Kitto and Nicko Venter. The club enjoyed a double celebration as the winners of the 2014 Inter-Club Championship Simphiwe Nhlapo, a member of the EGU Development Programme, notched the Most Improved Player award, while Jayden Schaper claimed the Under-15 honours and Dylan Mostert was named the Under-17 recipient. Jarvis, Van Deventer and Hall were also among 10 players who received awards for competing in all four of the EGU Quadrangular Tournaments against Central Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Gauteng North. And State Mines team emerged victorious in the 2014 Scratch League competition.

entral Gauteng A lifted the International Teams Championship title at Maccauvlei GC on Sunday after lightning and uninterrupted rain forced organizers to abandon play and declare a 36-hole result. The champions edged out Ekurhuleni A on a winning total of 413 after rounds of 208 and 205. Central Gauteng A’s Matthew Spacey shot successive rounds of 68, Michael Dixon carded rounds of 73 and 67, Marco Steyn doubled up with 70s and Darin de Smidt registered rounds of 70 and 78. Reigning Nomads SA Boys U-19 Stroke Play champion Tristen Strydom set the pace for Ekurhuleni A with rounds of 67 and 69. Strydom was supported by Kyle McClatchie, who posted rounds of 71 and 69, Jason Froneman, who signed for a 71 and a 73 and reigning Nomads SA Boys Match Play champion Paul Boshoff, who carded rounds of 70 and 68. Spacey and Strydom were tied for the lead on eight under 136 in the Individual Competition with Central Gauteng’s Gareth Clements (68-68). Recent Central Gauteng Open winner Spacey was well placed to defend his title, while Harry Oppenheimer Trophy champion Strydom was hunting back-to-back success in the season’s final national event.

However, Mother Nature had her own plan. The inclement weather rendered the course unplayable and the trio was forced to share the spoils after a play-off was impossible. The successive podium finishes did have a positive result for Strydom, though. With the shared victory, the Ekurhuleni Golf Union Player of the Year leapfrogged Gerlou Roux from Western Province for the second spot in the South African Golf Association’s Open Amateur Rankings. Hendrikus Stoop from Gauteng North rallied with a second round 65 to tie for fourth on 137 with Herman Loubser from Boland, who carded rounds of 71 and 66.

Sizzling Samu makes it six at KZN Junior South Africa’s number two ranked amateur Ivanna Samu was in ascendency once again when she fended off Chiara Contamathios to lift the KwaZulu-Natal Junior Championship title at Selborne Park GC last month.
J
ust a week after the reigning Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur champion overcame a five stroke deficit to claim the Mpumalanga Championship, Samu held off a charging Contamathios to triumph by one stroke.
The 16-year-old Ruimsig golfer sealed her sixth victory this season with a winning total of one-underpar 215, while Contamathios took sole second and defending champion Kaleigh Telfer finished third on three over 219. Although Samu got off to a slow start with an opening 74, she blitzed to the top of the 36-hole leaderboard with a career-best 67 in the second round. She carried a three stroke lead over Telfer into the final round and led by seven strokes from Modderfontein’s Contamathios. “I got off to a birdie start and I birdied the par-five third, as well, but I got into trouble off the tee at the short sixth and made a double,” said Samu. She dropped another shot at the eighth and had another double-bogey at the ninth to turn three over. “I settled down on the back nine, and it was great to knock in the birdie at the par-five,” Samu said. “I knew Chiara was making a move, but I just played tee to green over the last three holes and made sure I didn’t drop anymore shots.”

Samu signed for two over 74, while Contamathios closed with a superb four under 68. The champion said that joining the country’s top ranked Carrie Park at the GFG Academy a few weeks ago, has had a very positive impact on her game. Samu broke into the winner’s circle at the Pam Golding Properties WP Championship in March and followed with victory at the Gauteng 54-Hole Championship in May. After defeating Lora Assad for the Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur title at her home course in August, she won the Ackerman Championship at Clovelly Country Club in September. “Last year was the first time that I really competed on the national circuit and I am surprised that I’ve done so well,” she said. “It’s exciting to look back at the season and see the improvement, but I still have a long way to go, though. It was a real eye-opener to play with the professionals in the Cell C SA Women’s Open, because I realised just how I still have so much more to learn. “I’m really thankful that I have such great support from my school, Curro Aurora, who have allowed me to compete so much this season. “Every victory this season was special, but I have to say that I am just as excited about shooting 67 at Selborne Park.

De Lange delights in Indian triumph Shawnelle de Lange lifted the 15-17 Age Division title at the sixth Albatross International Junior Golf Championship, while fellow countrymen Danielle du Toit, Brittney-Fay Berger and Crystal Beukes all claimed top three finishes at the ITC Classic Golf Resort in Gurgaon, India this weekend.

A
n innovative golf educational programme managed by the PGA of South Africa is being used to help rehabilitate offenders at a KwaZulu-Natal correctional facility and give them a new start in life. The Golfwise programme at the Glencoe Correctional Services facility is now in its ninth year and has already produced 45 graduates, one of whom has even gone on to secure a fulltime job on the course maintenance staff at Cotswold Downs Golf and Lifestyle Estate. The programme involves PGA professional Graham Treager teaching a group of handpicked offenders the basics of the game of golf, how to caddie, how to maintain a golf course, and even the etiquette of the game. It’s a year-long programme, with five offenders at a time. “The programme has done amazing things for our region and for these offenders,” says Jason Bird, the KwaZulu-Natal Regional Chairman of the PGA of South Africa. The offenders practice their new skills on the Glencoe ninehole course, and Bird says it’s amazing to see what they do with very little resources.

Place the basil leaves and pine nuts into the bowl of a food processor and pulse several times. Add the garlic and Parmesan and pulse several times more. While the food processor is running, slowly add the olive oil in a steady small stream. Adding the olive oil slowly, while the processor is running, will help it emulsify and help keep the olive oil from separating. Occasionally stop to scrape down the sides of the food processor. Stir in some salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. To serve: Serve the scrambled eggs on top of the sun-seed bread, layer your salmon on top and garnish with your fresh basil pesto. TIP: Basil pesto darkens when exposed to air, so to store, cover tightly with plastic wrap making sure the plastic is touching the top of the pesto and not allowing the pesto to have contact with air. The pesto will stay greener longer that way.

aardie besluit het my hele lewe omgekeer. Dit was ‘n lewensveranderende besluit, maar een waaroor ek nooit spyt sal wees nie. Met ‘n vrou en twee kinders het ek besef dat deur net ‘n “cop” te wees, ek moeilik vir hulle die goeie dinge in die lewe sou kon bied. Terwyl ek nog ‘n polisieman was, het Hennie my ‘n kans gegee deur my Skotland toe te neem en ook na Doral in USA. Ek hou van dit en met my terugkeer kry ek die kans om in die Sonskynreeks en Europese reeks James Kingston se sak te dra. Dit gee vir my waardevolle ondervinding en ook die geleentheid om ander joggies en spelers te ontmoet. Dit gee my ook baie internasionale blootstelling en ek moet ewe skielik uitvind van visas, motelle, lughawens, motorhuur en al die dinge waarmee ‘n internasionale joggie te doen kry. Ook hoe om betyds by ‘n vreemde gholfbaan te moet uitkom deur spitsverkeer in vreemde stede! Dit alleen kan soms tot vreesaanjaende situasies lei. Van James af is ek na Charl Schwartzel en het ek ‘n hele aantal jare sy sak gedra. Ek het saam met Charl ‘n hele paar goeie gholfjare, oorwinnings geniet en ook waardevolle ondervinding opegdoen. Ek gaan stap die hele baan en kyk of daar enige strukturele veranderinge sedert verlede jaar se toernooi plaasgevind het. Kyk ook na die algemende spoed en rol van die setperke, kwaliteit van die skoonvelde en of daar areas is wat ons moet probeer vermy.

Na gholf Sondagmiddag is dit inpak en oppak want dan reis ons alweer na die volgende toernooi. In hierdie geval Leopard Creek wat ook ‘n fantastiese toernooi is en darem ook net om die draai van Sun City is. Volgende keer vertel ek julle van daai “poets” die Alfred Dunhill op Leopard Creek, vakansie tyd, en ons begin van die 2015 seisoen.
Maandagaand eet ek saam met Louis, sy familie en sy Gholf Akademie juniors wie spesiaal na Sun City gereis het om hom te ondersteun. Dinsdag is die Pro-Am en ‘n goeie oefenrondte vir Louis om die baan deur te kyk. Na gholf is dit tyd om bietjie by die swembad met ‘n paar vriende en kouetjies te gaan ontspan. Woensdagmiddag speel ons 9 gate saam met Charl en daar vind ‘n stewige onderlingse kompetisie tussen hulle twee plaas. Louis wen 1 op en voel goed vir die toernooi. Donderdag slaan ons redelik vroeg

• Where were you born and which schools did you attend? I was born in Durban and went to DHS. • Your nickname is “Zulu”, how did you acquire that? From Malcolm Marshall, perhaps because he couldn’t say my surname or because I speak the language. • What other sports did you play as a youngster and was it always going to be cricket? I played golf, rugby and tennis. • What influence did the late Malcolm Marshall have on your career? He had a big influence and he taught me how to play cricket for a living. • As well as playing for the Dolphins you played in England for Northamptonshire and in India for the Kolkata Tigers. What were some of the differences that you experienced playing in these vastly different cultures? The Indians and English are passionate supporters who know your game and stats better than yourself. The Indians are massive fans of South African cricket. • Who was the hardest bowler to face and the hardest batsman to bowl at in your era? Wasim Akram, he possessed exceptional pace and skill. Steve Waugh, a tough guy who never gave an inch. • Was sledging a big part of the game in your playing years and does it play a role in the game at the moment? Good sledging is designed to cause doubt in your oppo-

nents mind and we used it to our advantage whenever we could. Not sure how much takes place these days with so many cameras and sound mikes around? • Who would you say is the greatest all-rounder of all time? Sir Garfield Sobers. • Can we win the Cricket World Cup next year? With a bit of luck – for sure. • Is there possibly too much cricket being played at the moment? No. • How are you enjoying being head coach of the Dolphins? Going good with the Dolphins and hoping to win more trophies with them in the next few seasons. • What advice would you give to aspiring young cricketers? Enjoy the game for what it is and if you are lucky enough to do it for a living one day that is a bonus. • What do you do for relaxation? Fishing. • Do you have a favourite quote or saying? New Look for Monate Game Lodge
Monate Game Lodge is a haven of peace and tranquility, located in Limpopo, an easy 2 hour drive from O.R. Tambo Airport. A feeling of Euphoria!

According to Annika “I designed the course the way I play the game where you have to think about every shot.” The course will favour the strategic player rather than the big hitters”. The detailed design work was undertaken by European Golf Design Company a London based joint venture company between the European P.G.A Tour and International Management Group. This is the first design by EGD in South Africa and Annika`s second signature golf course after Mission Hills in China. Each of the 18 holes has four tee boxes of equal size suitably elevated to provide the player with a good view of the hole in play and with vistas over the estate and surrounding bushveld plains. This modern golf course is long measuring 7,055 meters off the white tees; 6,540 meters off the blue tees; 5,960 meters off the green tees and 5,145 meters off the front red tees. Each hole is unique in its own right with several

holes crossing a natural water ravine which runs through the property. They have a magnificent club house which is strategically situated at the base of the mountain overlooking the entire golf course and disappearing landscape. The Club house style is in keeping with the rest of the estate, with sandstone used from the nearby quarry blended with natural earthly tones and colours. The Club House has three levels, with the first floor housing the pro shop, change rooms and halfway house. The second floor comprises of the 2 conference rooms, Marnellas restaurant as well as the bar and bar lounge. These all lead onto balconies with magnificent views over the golf course. The third floor is where the Executive Office is situated. Most distinctive about the club house is the cableway, which links the club house to a Sundowner Restaurant at the top of the mountain. This is believed to be the only such facility in the world. Guests and fourballs can enjoy cocktails while enjoying the wonder of a beautiful bush sunset.

Being wildly different, Legend Golf & Safari Resort opened its new Signature Clubhouse in a similar fashion with a four-day themed showcase during November.

Ernie Els to become player host of South African Open Championship.
I
n December the Sunshine Tour announced that South Africa’s most successful golfer of the past three decades Ernie Els will take on the role of host and ambassador for the South African Open Championship, starting with the 104th SA Open in January 2015 at Glendower GC in Ekurhuleni. In addition to the SA Golf Development Board’s Chapter in Ekurhuleni, Els’ two charities, Els for Autism and the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation will become the beneficiary charities of the tournament. Willett joins English greats with Sun City triumph

anny Willett joined two of the greats of English golf when he won the Nedbank Golf Challenge by four shots at the Gary Player CC last month. With a masterful final round of 66 in which he putted superbly, Willet ended a memorable week on 18 under par and played his way into the company of Sir Nick Faldo (1994) and Lee Westwood (2010, 2011) as an English champion in “Africa’s Major”. “Those are some pretty good names to be next to. You see those names on the walk to the ninth green, and you realise how many great players have been here. It’s been an unbelievable week and words can’t describe it,” said Willett. And he sets himself up for a big next few months on the European Tour as the first winner of the new 2015 season. “This changes a lot. It’s an amazing way to start the new season. It gives you a massive boost,” said Willett. The 27-year-old Englishman went into the final round one shot behind Luke Donald. But as Donald faded with a final round of 73 to eventually finish third on 12 under and Ross Fisher closed with a 68 for second place on 14 under, Willett put together a confident

and composed final round for the victory. It capped an incredible weekend in which he shot rounds of 65 and 66. “You know, my caddie and I said we were going to play aggressive golf this week and we just stuck to that gameplan,” said Willett. In his speech on the 18th green, Willett also paid tribute to former South African president Nelson Mandela. During the second round, play was stopped at midday and all the golfers observed a minute of silence as a tribute to the great leader. “He did great things for this country, and because of that we can come down here and enjoy South Africa. I have always loved playing in South Africa. Everything about this place is fantastic.” Willett now has $1 250 000 worth of reasons to return next year. “I love it down here, and I love playing on the European Tour. Sure, as a kid the dream was always to play on the PGA Tour. But I don’t care how good your PGA Tour event is, it’s not going to match up to a week like this.” Tim Clark and Louis Oosthuizen finished as the leading South Africans on three under par.

lucrative R600,000 bonus pool in the Chase to the Investec Cup for Ladies and a new event in Cape Town are among the highlights of the 2015 Sunshine Ladies Tour schedule announced in December. The season got underway in spectacular fashion when the country’s top ranked Lee-Anne Pace won the Cell C SA Women’s Open at San Lameer in October and will resume with a further seven events in February and March this year. Women’s PGA of South (WPGA) chairperson, Margie Whitehouse, commended the continued support of the sponsors and the Sunshine Tour and welcomed new sponsor, The City of Cape Town. “Following the success of our inaugural Sunshine Ladies Tour, we are delighted to have retained the same number of tournaments, thanks to the support of Investec, Dimension Data, Sun International, The City of Tshwane and SuperSport,” said Whitehouse.

• He was born in New York as Eugenio Saraceni on February 27, 1902 and he died on May 13, 1999. • He is one of five golfers (along with Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods) to win all the current Major Championships in his career. • He was essentially self-taught and used what was somewhat unusual at the time, an interlocking grip to hold the club. • He invented the modern sand wedge and debuted the club (while keeping it secret during preliminary practice rounds) at The Open at Prince’s Golf Club in 1932 (which he won). • In the 1935 Masters Tournament he hit one of the most famous shots in the history of golf. It was a final round 235-yard 4-wood on the par-5 15th hole that went in, giving him a very rare double eagle 2 on the hole. He went on to win. • He had what is still the longest-running endorsement contract in professional sports – with Wilson Sporting Goods from 1923 until his death, a total of 75 years. • In 2000, he was ranked as the 11th greatest golfer of all time.

Q - What is the toughest part of beeing a greenkeeper?
Are you tired of hearing the moaners? We decided to ask Charl Blaauw, greenkeeper (Course superintendent) at St Francis Links a few questions on what goes on behind the scenes at a golf course. Hopefully this could clear up some questions that are asked when things don’t look normal on courses.
A – I would say it is to provide a golf course that is presentable on a daily basis, and keeping it presentable 365 days a year with ever changing weather conditions. Also I would have to say it is the fact that we have to maintain a golf course with a much smaller budget than we had 8 years ago and keeping the standards as high as they were then. I can however say with a lot of confidence that it has never looked better, and this is all due to a great team that I work with on a daily basis.

A - Looking after one of the top 10 courses is a huge honor, but this comes with huge responsibility. A typical day will start with our staff meeting and from there handing out the daily tasks for the morning shift. We get together twice a day, second time after lunch and hand out the rest of the tasks for the day. We have a never ending list of projects to complete on the course to keep the standards high and in tune with what golfers expect on a course. Constant contact with the workshop staff ensures that all projects runs smoothly with machines that doesn’t give any hassles. During summer month we focus a lot on our irrigation system and we ensure that we have enough staff to water stressed areas on the course. Soil samples once a year helps us determine what fertilizer program we need to keep the grass healthy with the least amount of stress to the plant. In winter months we scale down on cutting schedules, but crank it up with projects on the course, these projects consists of adding drainage, levelling tees, reshaping bunkers, moving sprinklers and many more examples like these. Our main focus in the morning is always to get the course prepped with the least amount of disruption to any golfer, but still ensure the highest quality of product for the golfer. Building a sound team on the course is probably the single biggest challenge for any Superintendent, because you are only as good as the team that supports you.

Q - How much water is needed on average per day on a 18 hole golf course? A – This depends a lot on the weather conditions, and with the intelligent water systems we use these days, you won’t waste a drop seeing that most systems these days can take accurate moisture readings and most will switch off automatically during rainy days. By adjusting the irrigation programs on a daily basis ensures that we only use water where it’s needed. For a full irrigation cycle we can use up to 1600 cubes per night, but then we will usually not irrigate the next night. This means that we will use 800 cubes per day over a two day period, sometimes a week goes by without irrigating, and during winter we almost use a 1/5 of the water on the course as appose to summer. Golf courses get criticized for using a lot of water, but if you break down the water usage down over a year, you will find that courses use a very small amount of water to keep it looking great. I would like to add that when the land was covered in alien plants, it was estimated that they sucked 8M litres of water a day from the ground. We have and continue to eradicate alien plants with a team dedicated to this. Our average irrigation per day last year 2012-2013 was far below what we are allocated per day (382 cubes) and this continues to be our goal, a goal that we have managed to meet.

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E - G R E E N K E E P I N G Q - There is a lot of talk about golf courses being too short with all the new technology being used. By narrowing the fairways, doesn’t this solve the problem, forcing players to use shorter clubs off the tee, and wouldn’t make this your job a bit easier or give you more time for other on course things? A- Jeff Clause always says “we are not here for a long time, but we are here for a good time”. Making the fairways narrower will bring the cost of mowing down due to the ever increasing fuel price, but who wants to hit a shorter club off the tee when you can bomb a driver down the fairway……or rough!. Everyone plays the same course and that is why we have a system called handicapping to ensure it is a fair game for all. Technology is available for everyone to use, but having fun while using it is up to the players themselves.
Q - Greens tend to be fertilized with tiny pellets. At what time of year. Why? And is it dangerous to golfers? A- There are many ways to fertilize your turf. Granulars and Foliar feeding (Spraying) are the most commonly used ways. The frequency of fertilizing will depend on the longevity of the products you use. Fertlizer is not harmfull to the golfer and the latest technology brought out fertilizer granulars that are so small that it also won’t affect the roll of the ball after distribution. Fertilizers are used to keep the plant and the soils healthy and growing well with the ever increasing quest for perfection on golf courses. Q - How often should greens be cut in winter and in summer?
Q - What does hollow tining achieve? A- Hollowtining relieves compaction in the soils and promotes air and water flow through the growing medium. By filling the holes with new sand a new growing medium is also created with better growing conditions for the plants. I am a firm believer of tining once a year and have seen the negative effects of skipping a year due to events on the course. Q - What is the benefit of putting a layer of sand on greens and tees? A- Sand on the greens gets put down in two ways for different goals. Firstly as a topdressing. This means that a thick layer of sand gets spread over the grass, usually during hollowtining, to fill the holes and smooth out the surface of the green. Secondly we talk about a dusting on the greens. This means that a thin layer of sand literally gets dusted in a fine layer over the grass, and a golfer will be able to putt on the green without any disruption to the roll of the ball. Dusting is done to promote smooth greens and it prevents the buildup of thatch on the greens (Thatch is a tightly intermingled layer of living and dead stems, leaves, and roots which accumulates between the layer of actively growing grass and the soil underneath. Thatch is a normal component of an actively growing turfgrass, and as long as it is not too thick, it can increase the resilience of the turf to heavy traffic.

A- We cut greens 365 days a year unless weather prevents us to do so. Q - What can golfers do to keep the course they play in the best condition? A- I think golfers only needs to follow golf etiquette and at least repair pitchmarks, fill divots with sand, throw rubbish in dustbins and rake bunkers after play. We will do the rest, just help us to keep the standards high. Q - Bunkers are high maintenance and expensive hazards on a course. Are there too many and wouldn’t the greenkeeper’s job be made easier if we returned to using more grass hollows? A- Yes, life will be easier for the maintenance team with less bunkers, but golf will not be golf without the correct amount of sand bunkers around the course. Q - Is there a proper way to rake sand in a bunker? A- I think the correct answer to this is to only leave the bunker the way you found it before you stepped in it. Leave the surface smooth for the next player behind you, that is the golden rule of raking a bunker.

The Innovating Game The rise of the short form
One of the dominant trends over the next two decades, certainly in Asia, is a rapid growth in urbanisation driven by population increase. By 2030 the world’s population is expected to grow from seven billion now to eight billion, and much of that growth will be in Asia. It is difficult to imagine the scale of this growth, but it has been described as the equivalent of building a city the size of Los Angeles every three months. There are consequences for land use: cities will expand beyond their current boundaries, absorbing land as they go. One challenge for golf, certainly in Asia, is that new courses, will be further from the city and harder to reach, adding more travel time to the four-to-five hours it takes to play a full round of golf. And modern consumers, across the world, are more protective of their time. Even those who have more leisure time than they used to—as is true for many of the consumers in the emerging middle class in Asian countries—find themselves spreading it more thinly across more activities and more commitments. Taken together, these suggest that in all markets we will see the emergence of new forms of golf which take less time, and there is already evidence that these forms are emerging. In this, golf is following a similar pattern to other sports, where short forms have emerged either because participants do not have the time for the traditional format (as with the rapid growth of five a side football), or because spectators are not willing to commit as much time (as seen in the development of 50-over and now Twenty20 cricket). Change has always been part of the game. The golf course originally had 11 holes, played out and back

to form a 22-hole round. In 1764 the first four holes were converted to two “for the improvement of the links”, thus reducing the course to 18 holes. Over time, as the prominence of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club grew, so 18 holes became the standard for a round. Scotland’s Troon course, one of the innovators, has developed a shorter, nine-hole version of its ‘Monument’ course, called Monument Express, with the challenge of a competition course combined with options for juniors and less experienced players. Elsewhere, course designers are developing ‘clover leaf’ formats that lay out a full eighteen-hole course in such a way that players return to the clubhouse every six holes, making six-hole and twelve-hole rounds a simple option. More irregular combinations of loops, such as three-, five-, and tenholes would—depending on the physical land available—increase flexibility further. Similarly, an important part of the winning French bid for the 2018 Ryder Cup was a commitment to develop 100 shorter urban courses, of six to nine holes, as an element in a development strategy which seeks to increase the number of registered French golfers from 400,000 to 700,000 in a decade. Beyond this, as with Twenty20 cricket, we are beginning to see innovators tweak the rules to create short formats that preserve the flavour of the game but increase the excitement. It is likely that we will see more formats such as PowerPlay, based on a nine-hole competition, which rewards players willing to take more risks. By 2020, we expect that an innovative sports channel will have driven this further, developing a format— with or without the support of golf’s organising bodies—that allows professionals to play head to head in competitions that take half a day, or less, to finish. There may be a lesson here from the rise of the international sevens circuit in rugby union: the more international the flavour, the better the spectacle.

In other respects, golf development is in line with trends in other sports. Golf simulators, which are improving rapidly, are spreading into cities, offering the opportunity for a one-hour game of golf with friends in a lunchbreak or on the way home. South Korea remains the market leader for simulator golf, with providers found in shopping malls. Although there are controversies about simulator technologies, advocates believe that the best tracking technologies are now sophisticated enough to replicate indoors the full range of game situations. At the other end of the spectrum, the proposed Indoor Golf Arena in the Netherlands is a huge covered complex that will offer a whole range of different golf experiences

under one roof, competing with leisure destinations as much as golf courses. One of the consequences of such developments is the increasing democratisation of the sport. Urban Golf, a simulator golf business based in London, uses this as a point of difference in its advertising: “Any player, from beginner to professional, is eligible to walk in off the street ... They will not be required to abide by an archaic, denimphobic dress code, to speak in whispers in the club house or to be snubbed by the committee.� It could be that these developing short-forms of the game could spell the end of the traditional driving range. If spaces such as these are going to survive, they may need to re-invent themselves, perhaps along the lines of Top Golf, with a range of golf formats and entertainment facilities.

Motion-based interfaces (as on the Wii and Kinect) will become all but ubiquitous for the next generation of console golf games, but it will take longer for consumers to familiarise themselves with these new playing techniques. Traditionally, the standard interface in a golf game—largely unchanged since the mid-80s—has been a succession of clicks to determine power and direction. It will take some time for a new set of playing standards for motion-based interfaces to evolve, but when they do, it will change the gameplay in ways that make it more like playing the actual game.
The golf video game market Three questions dominate the discussion of the future of video games: what new hardware will allow us to do; what new gamers from different markets or demographics will demand; and what new games or content will emerge. These questions are as relevant to golf games as for any other type of video or computer game. When they are considered together they depict a particularly bright future for the genre. When considering the impact of new hardware, marketers and gamers alike have tended to focus on the processing power of new consoles or computing devices. How many bits does it have? How many polygons can it render? How fast can it do 3D? Now, however, the attention has shifted away from raw processing power to new interfaces: from the Wii’s motion sensing controllers, to controller-less gestural interfaces like the Xbox Kinect. The difference between the next generation of consoles and the Xbox 360s and Playstation 3s of today is likely to be as much about more intricate and sophisticated interfaces and input devices as it is better graphics. This is good news for the golf video game market. Golf games offer eighth generation consoles like the multiscreen Wii U an accessible way of demonstrating new gestural interfaces (swinging a club in a golf game is more intuitive than learning a new control system for a games platform), as well as showing off improved graphics capabilities.

When it comes to new gamers, golf is similarly well served by the growing group of ‘casual gamers.’ Golf games have traditionally tended to appeal to an older niche of people who were golfers interested in playing simulations, rather than the core gaming audience. However, the simple pick-up-and-play dynamic of golf games makes them perfect for the casual gamer, while the relaxed, gently competitive nature of a quick round of golf is more suited to the growing family gaming market than, say, a traditional multiplayer shoot-em-up. Beyond the casual gaming market, if golf continues to grow in popularity in Asia, we should expect to see a corresponding rise in the popularity of golf games in the region. Finally, when looking at new games, the casual gamer and Chinese gamer of tomorrow will want a different sort of golf game than the one we have today, but their tastes are unlikely to change the shape of the genre completely. The virtual game of golf will continue to follow the same patterns (strokeplay and matchplay) as the physical sport. What will change, however, will be the social dimension. At the simplest level, we expect golf games to make more use of User Generated Content to generate new courses, virtual club designs or even allow gamers to play creatively with the laws of physics in a virtual world. We also expect to see virtual coaching and mentoring of less experienced players, making them better, and more committed, golfers in the process. By 2020 we can expect simple but networked home simulators to blur the distinction between golf gaming and playing. The golf game of the future could make golfers out of gamers, rather than the other way round.

The caddy in your pocket The advent of GPS (Global Positioning System) technology has created a swathe of mobile devices and applications designed to help golfers plan their approach to the hole. Typically, the devices allow the player to see the approach to the hole on their phone, along with obstacle, as well as calculating distance. Some applications also enable the user to record all of their shots and choice of club for later analysis. As devices become more sophisticated, they’ll be able to help assess wind speed and direction, while social media will enable players to access other people’s experience of playing holes or the best approach to particular obstacles, or even crowdsource advice.

Something Funny!
A Quick Nine
1. “Bad day at the course,” a guy tells his wife. “Charlie had a heart attack on the third hole.” “That’s terrible!” she says. “You’re telling me,” the husband replies. “All day long, it was hit the ball, drag Charlie.”

Guy gets to a long par 3 over water. A voice from above says, “Hit the new Titleist Pro V.” The guy tees up the Titleist and takes a practice swing. The voice comes back, “Never mind, hit a range ball.”
3. A U.S. citizen is vacationing on his own in Ireland. He
decides to play a round of golf and is paired with three local gents. He takes a few practice swings, steps up to the first tee, and proceeds to hook the ball out of bounds. He shakes his head, reaches in his pocket, and re-tees another ball. He tells his playing partners that he is taking a Mulligan. He pounds one down the center of the fairway about 280 yards out. With a big smile, he asks the others “In the U.S., we call that a Mulligan; was wondering what you called it here in Ireland.” After a moment of silence, one of the locals replies, “Hitting three.”
She fell face down on the tee, didn’t know what hit her. They had an inquest on the wife’s death, the coroner said it was clear how she died, she was killed by a golf ball, and that there was a perfect imprint of a golf ball on the back of her head. The husband said, “Yes, that was my ball” The coroner then went on to say that he was a bit concerned to find a ball inserted up the woman’s backside, and could the husband throw some light on this? The husband said, “Oh that must have been my provisional. I wondered where it went.”

This time the announcement came: “We really need the gentleman on hole number one to move off of the Ladies’ tee box!” To which the man turns around and yells: “And I really need the announcer to shut up and let me play my second shot!”
6. A married couple played golf together everyday.
One day the man and his wife were on the first tee of their local course. He was on the white tee and she was waiting in front of him by the ladies tee. He teed off and caught the ball perfectly; unfortunately it hit his wife smack in the back of the head killing her instantly.

play golf. He’s playing the best golf of his life when an angel asks God, “Are you going to let this slide? Do something!” So God says, “Watch this.” The pastor hits a 425-yard tee shot and the ball goes in the hole for a double eagle. The angel asks, “Why did you reward him?” God says, “Who is he gonna tell?”
