PGA champs go Dining
Diners Club South Africa recently announced their partnership with the PGA of South Africa with part of the sponsorship dedicated to the PGA National Championships 2013. Said Diners Club Managing Director Ebrahim Matthews, “We are thrilled to have an association with the PGA and we hope to grow it in many ways. Details of which will be announced in the near future and we hope it will benefit not only the professional golfers but also our vast number of customers”. What was formerly the Club Pro Championships has been given an added lustre. The inaugural PGA National Championship presented by Diners Club was played last month at the Cotswold Downs championship golf course near Hillcrest. The customary pre tournament Pro Am was held on the Monday for PGA Partners and Affiliates and selected Diners Club Guests and then 70 PGA members teed it up under ideal coastal conditions on Tuesday.

The increased prize fund of R150 000 prize money up for grabs added a dollop of pressure to the professionals who were struggling to come to terms with Cotswold Downs’s fast, sloping greens. Kenneth Dube, Head Professional at Royal Oak Golf Club said: “The course was the toughest course I have played since I have been playing tournament golf. It is a course that needs a lot of concentration from tee box to green. It is easy to shoot some big numbers if you lose concentration.” In the end the testing conditions put a premium on experience and after round 2 it was the veteran short game expert Derek James from Southbroom who was leading the pack with 2 under par 142. However Kevin Stone was more consistent under pressure in the third round and after some solid golf he lifted the trophy with a brilliant final round of 70 – the best score of the day.

WINNING LETTER To the Editor Back when I used to play golf, I would play roughly 30 to 40 times a year. That’s not too shabby considering I was married; owned a home and wasn’t retired. And I would play a lot: 18 holes every other weekend and 9 holes on the weekends that I didn’t play 18.Most of my Saturdays (or Sundays) were spent on a different golf course within 1-2 hours driving distance from my house.
The funny thing is I didn’t even really think about not playing until now. Seriously – so far this year we’ve been to an amusement park; a cricket game; the bird park; and the beach (plenty). Golf? Not one thought.
Yes, back when I used to play golf, I loved every minute of it. And the next time I play, I will love every minute of that too. The bottom line is you never stop loving this game – whether you play once or 100 times a year; golf has a way of endearing itself Since 2010 though, things have changed. That year, to you. I played 15 times. 2011 was just 8 times. Last year, 14 times. Golf Assessment Program for any player aspiring to progress up a level in the game. Paul Cuningham, PGA Qualified Teaching Professional at Eagle Canyon
The Zone of Optimum Performance Some players find sole value in the physical act of training when seeking perfection in the game of golf. They will spend hours hitting thousands of shots monotonously fine tuning a technical move set up by their Pro, fitness instructor or short game guru. While volume training does have its merit grooving consistency and confidence, so too does boredom and burn-out also take its toll. These players are known as “technical� players, more concerned with the look of a swing and are generally untrained mentally. Other styles of player may focus only on playing the game, refining their belief structure, dealing with tension well, monitoring their state and management on the course. While these types of player are generally more effective than the previous example, the trained mind, untrained swing player too reveals inconsistencies in form as they battle the inconsistencies of their technical limitations. How you find the balance is through a blend of both player and this will lead you towards the Zone of Optimum Performance. As your ability in the game improves so too do the pressures that you will find yourself under, in fact the pressure never ends and it just spikes higher every level you progress. There are always new goals to achieve. Handling pressure is a controllable entity and is as easy to fix as a physically fault in the game. The key is to continually put yourself under pressure in training and give yourself the opportunity to deal with it effectively. We need to practice in the Zone. To do this you need to create a realistic, competitive environment to compete in against yourself. Something that satisfies your creativity, concentration levels and gives you valuable feedback.

Play the 10 ball game and choose 3 targets to create a channel within. A short range target around 80 to 100 meters, a mid range target around 150 to 170 and a long range target of 200 plus. Now, when firing at the short range target, see how many balls you can land within 6 feet left or right of it. See how many you can land within 10 feet left or right of your mid range target and finally within 15 feet of your long range target. See if you can make 10 out of 10! When you get the first 7 or 8 in the Zone you’re putting yourself under the same pressures in closing out a win, making the cut or qualifying for an event. In the 10 balls count how many times you made a perfect Routine - Assess, Repair, Program, Let it go, Learn, Let it go. Without distraction, so back off, you should attain 10 out of 10! Play with your shot shape, no fighting your swing and use the elements wisely to keep the ball within the corridor of acceptance. In the programming phase of your routine feel the sensation that works most effectively for you and stick to it. Get the ball into the Play Zone in whatever way possible. After each 10 ball session, notice trends in where your ball tends to group, your shape, strike and distance control. Step back, reflect and learn. Then engage in another quality session, grow and find the Zone.

Schuhknecht wins world title South African disabled golfer Reinard Schuhknecht is the new world one-armed champion after winning the Stroke Play title at the 76th World One-Armed Championship in Scotland recently. The 21-year-old Pretoria golfer, who plays off a five handicap, won the Stroke Play title at Ballater GC with rounds of 72 and 74, and then finished runner-up in the Match Play. “It’s a great feeling to be a world champion,” said Schuhknecht, who also won the Sir Ian Hamilton Trophy for the Best Nett and was the joint winner of the Greensomes competition. Schuhknecht, who was nicknamed “Rhino” at the World Championship, lost his arm in 2006 and has since been one of South African disabled golf ’s leading young players. “Two days after I came out of hospital I was on the driving range and teaching myself how to play golf with one arm,” he said. “I just hope that I can inspire someone else out there to do the same.” 12

Is your head on straight? By: Roger Wessels and Jan Fourie (Biokineticist) One of the first things we learn as golfers is to get our head behind the ball in the backswing and to keep it behind the ball until impact, and while this is sound advice it can be very misleading.

ood shoulder rotation around the spine is important to keep the club on plane and be a consistent ball striker but this becomes quite difficult to do if the head is out of position. Tilting your head to the right at anytime be it at address or during the swing is going to have an adverse effect on technique particularly in the downswing leading to the dreaded shanks, blocks, slices, duffs and the occasional hook – not a pretty picture.

There may be quite a few readers who will say Jack Nicklaus (still the greatest Major winner of all time) positioned his head to the right but he turned his head, he did not tilt it. Jan’s biomechanical explanation is worth reading to understand how a poor head position can affect technique. An asymmetrical position of the head between the shoulders will affect shoulder movement. Moving the head out of position creates tension in neck muscles like the Levator Scapulae and Sternocleidomastoid. These muscles attach the head and neck to the shoulder blades, sternum (chest bone) and collar bone (clavicle) respectively, any tension or contraction of these muscles will pull on or move the bony structures resulting in poor mechanics, inconsistency and a higher risk for injury in the golf swing. When the head is tilted to the right (for a right-handed golfer), elevation of the left shoulder (Pic 1) will occur changing the plane of movement in the swing. Forcing the left shoulder down while tilting the head to the right will cause extreme tension and possible strain of the muscles around the shoulder blades and side of the neck. A neutral head position at address has an added benefit; it allows for better alignment when putting because your eye line will be parallel to your target line. It is very difficult to align the putter face correctly with the eyes across the target line. An easy correction would be to keep your head aligned with your spine at address and during the swing (Pic 2) but see your local PGA pro if you struggle with awareness of what your head is doing in the swing. Good golfing and keep your head on straight!

Anton stays strong for Big Easy win Anton Haig claimed his sixth career title at Irene CC in early June where he shot a secondround 70 to clinch victory at the Sunshine Big Easy Tour’s Irene tournament. “I haven’t been in this situation for a while, so it’s nice to pull one off. It was a great day and I thoroughly enjoyed it,” he laughed. The 27-year-old began the final round three shots clear, but a shaky start that included bogeys at the fourth and sixth left him tied for the lead with Englishman Michael Downes on seven-under-par. The Johannesburg local recorded wins on both the Asian and European Tours before his 22nd birthday, but struggled with the limelight. His golf paid the price, and soon the young star was struggling to find confidence on the course.

Dylan joins winners circle! Dylan Frittelli closed out the Kärnten Golf Open to secure a maiden Challenge Tour victory and open the door to a new chapter in his young career. The 23 year old South African cruised to a three stroke victory at the Jacques Lemans Golf Club, resisting any attempt to catch him by the chasing pack with a mature and consistent final round performance, carding a level par 71 to finish the week victorious. “But I am delighted to get the win. This changes a lot for me and really opens doors for me and my career. I can hopefully push on now and try and get my European Tour card through the Challenge Tour and really keep pushing it forward.”

Simply the best
W
e recently visited the Cape peninsula and winelands regions to catch up with the latest goings on in this wonderful part of South Africa. We were hosted by Oliver Jacobs, who owns High Timbers Lodge which is situated on the slopes of the Constantia Mountains overlooking the Steenberg Golf Club. Oliver himself plays regular golf and can choose from one of the many golf courses that are literally on his doorstep such as Steenberg, Clovelly, Westlake, Royal Cape, Rondebosch, Mowbray or Metropolitan. A little further away and he has courses such as Atlantic Beach and Langebaan up the West coast and travelling inland he has the likes of Parow, Erinvale and Paarl (to name but a few). The Western Cape is one of South Africa's most beautiful provinces. It is a region of majestic mountains, colourful patchworks of farmland set in lovely valleys. The province's unmatched natural beauty, famous hospitality, cultural diversity, excellent wine and rich cuisine make it one of the world's greatest tourist attractions. As a golfing destination it is second to none and it was a pleasure to reacquaint ourselves with the region and to be hosted at such a lovely venue.

Parowdise!
P
arow Golf Club moved to its present position in 1976, when the local Municipality had the course built upon a design by Ken Elkin. The move was necessary, as the old nine-hole course was becoming too small for the members, and the local authorities sold it for residential and business development. The new course was hacked out of Port Jackson bush and shrubs, and had a fierce reputation at first, when any wayward shot was lost in the thick bushes bordering the narrow fairways. Gradually, the bush was eradicated and the fairways expanded, so that today, it is known as a gentle parklands course, with a variety of water features and an abundance of bird-life.
to list, but record profits have been ploughed back in to the clubhouse and course, resulting in a Club that can now be counted among the best in Cape Town. Tremendously popular among the local community, having a loyal and proud membership, making transformation a reality and becoming a shining beacon for all other golf clubs to follow, Parow Golf Club is certainly making a name for itself!
The Club has gone through boom times and bad times, nearly having to close its doors in 2002/3 when a series of incidents resulted in a major bad time. Since then the Club has gone from strength to strength. The alterations and improvements that have been effected since 2003 are far too long July/August 2013

Blaauw blows them away to win Vodacom Origins It needed a moment of brilliance from Jacques Blaauw, and the ginger-haired professional delivered it on his way to a maiden victory in the Vodacom Origins of Golf at Simola in early June. Blaauw turned a dismal front nine into a scintillating back nine. And it reached its peak on the par-four 16th, when he holed his wedge from 143 yards for eagle to take the lead and ultimately the title. “I’m lost for words. It hasn’t sunk in yet. It’ll probably do so on the flight home and I’ll smile to myself and be really chuffed,” Blaauw said after his closing 69 for a winning total of 12 under par. July/August 2013

nly 30 minutes from Cape Town and nestled at the foot of the magnificent Helderberg mountains, lies one of South Africa's golfing jewels. Erinvale offers a unique golfing challenge to all levels of players, with breathtaking views of the Cape Winelands as well as the beautiful False Bay Coastline.
Since Erinvale's inception in 1994, this Gary Player designed course has hosted the 1996 World Cup of Golf and more recently, both the 2003 and 2004 South African Open, the 2nd oldest golf championship in the world. avid Frost never flinched in his showdown with Hall of Famer Fred Couples even with his first major championship on the line and a late rain delay to ponder the stakes. Frost parred the final two holes to hold on for a one-stroke victory over Couples last month in the Regions Tradition, the South African's first major title in 17 attempts on the Champions Tour. "We came in from the break and I said to myself, It's not going to be easy," Frost said. "Freddy's got nothing to lose. He's going to go out there and hit the shots and fire at the pins. I've just got to kind of accept it and be up to the challenge." Both birdied No 16 after play resumed with the sun shining after a delay of 1 hour, 8 minutes for lightning in a round played at times in driving rain. Couples and Frost both shot 4-under 68, and Frost finished at 16-under 272. It was Frost's second victory of the season and fifth career win on the 50-and-over tour. "We both played very hard today. I don't know who 32
wanted it more, me or him," said Frost, who took over the points lead from Bernhard Langer. "He's just such a tough competitor. I didn't think I had it in me, all the good shots he hit out there.. I just had to try to stay on top of him." The two bumped fists coming up on 18 in what had ultimately turned into a two-man duel. "He played very well," Couples said. "I gave him pretty much everything I had. I hit some pretty good shots. I drove it pretty well. He was just better the whole day. He stayed one ahead and that's where we ended up." Also the Toshiba Classic winner in March in California, Frost hit his approach shot to 10 feet of the closing hole and two-putted to match Couples' par. Couples had sent his approach into the bunker at right and his potential birdie putt went just to the left. "I said to myself, 'If he makes his (putt), I'm just going to have to make mine.' I've been in this match play situation many times before and that's

just how I try to envision what's going on," Couples said. "You can't help it if he's going to roll his putt in."
Cook birdied five of the first eight holes and finished his round with a 66 a couple of minutes before the weather delay.
Couples was seeking a second straight win in a major. He sat out the Senior PGA Championship three weeks ago but won the Senior British Open in 2012.
"We were running all day trying to outrun it," Cook said. "I guess this is the very definition of scattered thunderstorms. They were all over the place."
Frost had come close in a major before but this time managed to nurse his one-stroke lead through the final round. He lost to Tom Lehman in a three-way playoff at the 2010 Senior PGA Championship.
Langer closed with a 63 to tie the course record with Gary Player from the 1984 PGA Championship. Langer had 10 birdies and finished at 10 under. "If I had made some putts earlier in the week," he said, "it would have been pretty nice."
Frost's only bogey came on No 14 while Couples got his 68 with six birdies and two bogeys. Couples, who had a 3-footer for birdie on No 15, left the next hole with a grin after matching Frost's birdie. His expression turned to a wince when his second shot on No 17 went far to the right, landing down a steep slope from the green next to the grandstands. He two-putted for his fourth straight par on the hole and couldn't make up that stroke. "Really, the letdown, I hit a terrible shot on 17," Couples said. "I smoked it down there and I just tried a shot that maybe I'm not accustomed to. Under that kind of pressure, I think it was a mental blunder to not hit the green there and not make birdie." Cook had beaten Frost in a playoff at the seasonopening Mitsubishi Electric Championship in Hawaii, and made a final-round run at Shoal Creek. 1 2 T3

Mossel Bay – the ‘Do stuff ’ destination – is gearing up for a springtime feast of festivals. And the good news, of course, is this means great golf at Mossel Bay Golf Club and Pinnacle Point Beach and Golf Resort.

he annual Mossel Bay Sports Festival (this year from 20 to 24 September) will include at least 28 different sporting codes – with nationally-known events like the KFC Point High Cricket Festival for Under 19s (which had already attracted entries from nearly 30 teams at the time of writing) and the much-loved PetroSA Marathon taking their places alongside local competitions like trail running and a skateboarding challenge (and even a doggie walk!). “We’re putting together a special package that will allow you to play both here and at Mossel Bay during the Sports Festival - one day after the other, and at a very reasonable rate,” said Pinnacle Point’s Nic Grundtvig. He said that Pinnacle Point will be offering low season specials to non-members throughout the winter, and that a number of membership packages have also been placed on the market: “There’s more information on our new-look web site.” The Mossel Bay Travel Festival (18 to 20 October) - the newest event on the town’s calendar – is set to bring an exciting new trend in tourism to the African continent. It was modelled on the New York Travel Festival – and when the organisers, Mossel Bay Tourism, contacted the organisers of that event, the Americans immediately suggested an official affiliation.
“Like New York, the Mossel Bay Travel Festival is designed to celebrate the act of being here – in our case here in Mossel Bay, of course – for locals and visitors alike,” said Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm. “And it’s going to be about sharing the town, too, so we’ll be live-streaming as many events as we possibly can, and Tweeting and Facebooking about them, too.” The event will include a day of desk-top exhibitions, and a day of visits and outings – and both of the local courses will be taking part. “We’ll be offering hugely discounted rounds – and we’ll be opening our club house as one of the Festival’s ‘Voorkamer Museums’,” said Mossel Bay Golf Club’s Louw Strydom. (‘Voorkamer Museums’ are private collections of historical, cultural, or natural interest that are opened to the public for a day. The concept was created specifically for the Travel Festival.) Park makes history at Women's US Open Rolex Rankings No. 1 Inbee Park became only the second player in LPGA history to win the first three majors in a season with a four-stroke victory over I..K. Kim at the U.S. Women’s Open last month. The 24-year-old South Korean fired a final-round 74 at the Sebonack GCin Southampton, N.Y. to finish at 8-under-par 280.

his victory, Park’s fourth-career LPGA major championship victory and second U.S. Women’s Open triumph, sets her up for a date with destiny in early August at the RICOH Women’s British Open, played at the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland. She will attempt to become the first player, male or female, to win four professional major championships in one season. Park, who won the 2012 LPGA Official Money List and Vare Trophy for lowest scoring average, is the first player in the modern era to win the first three majors in a season. Babe Zaharias, the only other player to accomplish the feat, did it in 1950 when she won all three majors played that year – the Titleholders Championship, the Women’s Western Open and the U.S.Women’s Open. Mickey Wright (1961) and Pat Bradley (1986) are the only other players in LPGA history to win three majors in a season, though not consecutively. “I am just very honored to put my name by someone like Babe Zaharias,” Park said, after accepting the trophy and a champagne spritz from the last two Open champs, countrywomen So Yeon Ryu and Na Yeon Choi. “I don’t know what I just did today; it’s something very great. It’s scary to think about what I am capable of doing.” “Believe it or not, I was very calm out there,” said Park, who became the 15th player to win multiple U.S Women’s Opens. “It was weird; I didn’t feel much pressure when I was on the golf course. I was nervous last night, but on the golf course, somehow, I felt very calm.” Park, who led following the second and third rounds this week, was the only player to shoot under par during Saturday’s third round when scoring conditions proved to be very difficult. Her unflappable demeanor and rhythmic putting strokes are gaining wide recognition following her sixth win of the 2013 season. 42
“You know, it's something I thought Annika would do,” said Angela Stanford. “That's really the only player that I've played with out here that I thought would do it. So I mean, I don't know how she's doing it, but obviously I know she's a great putter and emotionally she really keeps it under control out there. I'm not sure if she hits it sideways. I'm pretty sure she hits it pretty straight. I didn't think – after Annika retired I didn't think anybody would ever do it, so it's pretty impressive.” The South Korean’s ability to deliver victories or runner-up finishes over the past year has been beyond impressive. In her last 24 events, Park has won eight times and finished runner-up five times. So in more than half of the events she’s played over that span, she’s finished first or second. Park began her run at consecutive major championship titles at the Kraft Nabisco Championship in April where she won by four strokes before leaping into Poppie’s Pond at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.. She continued the streak earlier this month at the Wegmans LPGA Championship, where 36 holes of regulations – and more – were needed on Sunday. Park defeated

I think I really want to enjoy the moment as it is in the moment. I mean, grand slam is very big. I probably wouldn't get this kind of opportunity ever again. I know this year is a good opportunity for me.” In 32 days, Park will tee off in the first round of the RICOH Women’s British Open seeking the cement her name in golf ’s history books. Only Mickey Wright (1961 – 62) has won four consecutive majors on the LPGA, and no players has done so in a single season. Tiger Woods is the only male to win four consecutive majors across two seasons, 2000-2001. “But I think one of my goals for – one of my goals for my career was the career grand slam, not the grand slam, but I think career grand slam is good enough for me,” said Park. “I mean, I haven't done that yet. It would mean so much if I could do the grand slam. But takes so much hard work, and it takes a lot to do. I'm just glad that I can give it a try at St. Andrews. That's going to be a great experience. Whether I do it or not, I'm just a very lucky person.” Inbee Park won her third major of the 2013 season on Sunday. Only three other players in LPGA history have notched three majors in one season and only Babe Zaharias won three in a row. Origins Double for Charl Jacques Blaauw started fast and was never headed after he took the lead in the final round of the R600,000 Vodacom Origins of Golf event at Selborne Park GC. The 27-year-old who plays out of Centurion won his second career title just three weeks after his maiden victory in a performance that left his pursuers unable to match him despite their best efforts. And they were good efforts: Danie van Tonder and defending championAdilson Da Silva each posted a final round score of six-under-par 66, but Blaauw’s eight-under 64 was too good to be caught. “The front nine was amazing golf,” said Blaauw, “the best golf I’ve played this year – and maybe the best of my career.” Blaauw ascribed the victory in part to the experience he picked up in winning his first title at the Vodacom Origins event at Simola. “I came from behind in that one after a poor start on the front nine, but I’m riding the wave now,” he said. 52

BMW Open – Ernie new champion, Brandon new prodigy
The BMW International Open proved to be a fairytale of a tournament. Ernie Els birdied the 18th and became the oldest player to win the event, pipping Thomas Bjorn by a stroke. Professional debutant Brandon Stone defied the odds and broke par in every round for a 13-underpar total and tied 10th.
“I just felt good this week. I just felt my game was there and lucky enough it was one shot good enough,” said Els.
China’s Wen-Yi Huang shot a Sunday 65 and tied for seventh on the back of an invitation. The 31year-old is a former caddie and received an invitation to Germany through the Chinese Golf Association.
The Big Easy made his way through the final nine holes in level par, while Bjorn failed to recover from a double-bogey at the 14th. The highlights reel of Els' tournament will certainly include birdie at the 18th on Sunday, but a large portion will be taken up by his first-round 63, which included an eagle at the sixth.
But firstly the day belonged to Els. The ever-relaxed Open Champion and his good friend Thomas Bjorn gritted their teeth during the Sunday showdown, both carding 69 at the end of it all, which left the South African one stroke clear.

He loved the back nine at GolfKlub Munchen Eichenried and for the first three rounds shot 31, 33, 33 from the 10th to the 18th, which helped him relax on the stretch on The final day. Els credited the skill of the over40s currently competing and added: “You know, you look at (Phil) Mickelson, myself, Thomas (Bjorn), there's quite a few of us, there's at least ten of us in our 40s that can still play, (Miguel) Jiménez and so forth.” On the opposite end of the spectrum was Brandon Stone, playing his first tournament as a proffessional with his childhood hero Ernie Els, via sponsor’s invitation. The 20-year-old had an electric debut and scythed his way to tied 10th, in spite of a double bogey at the 14th in the final round. Darren Fichardt also put in a good showing this week, joining Sergio Garcia and Wen-Yi Huang in a share of seventh on 14-under-par. Likewise Justin Walters, who streaked round in 65 on Sunday to take up a share of 29th. July/August 2013

CJ does it again at Polokwane Open CJ du Plessis is the champion of the A-division of the Bell’s Polokwane Open, which was held last month. He finished this event at the Polokwane GC on 143 points, three ahead of 2nd place man Jacques Kruyswick. Jannie Bronkhorst on 147 points took 3rd place. The A-division was contested by players with a 0-9 handicap. Glen Wynne with a total of 147 points was the winner of the midamateur division for players 35 years and older. Niko Koster on 154 points came 2nd here. Johan Nel on 160 points won the senior division for players 50 years and older. Abby Greaver on 145 points took 2nd place. Piet du Toit with 167 points came out on top in the B-division with Sheriff Mashile on 169 points settling for 2nd place. 58

Gary Player to pose nude South African golf legend Gary Player, affectionately known as the Black Knight, is in pretty good shape for a 77-year-old, and in the upcoming issue of ESPN the Magazine, readers will get the chance to see exactly how fit he is. According to the Fox Sports website, ESPN announced the names of the athletes who posed nude for the magazine’s fourth annual “Body Issue” last month. Among them: The septuagenarian Player, who will be the oldest person to ever appear in the magazine's special edition. Player’s focus on his health is well-documented - he still does 1 000 sit-ups a day - and the idea of the magazine is to celebrate the human body in all forms, a point that doesn’t seem lost on the nine-time Major winner, who tweeted: - After a lifetime dedicated to health & fitness I’m chuffed to be in @ESPNmag's Body Issue to hopefully inspire others to workout & live well. - I was at first hesitant, but @ESPNmag's Body Issue celebrates the human body. No matter what your age, we should all look after ourselves! - I know I'm no Olympic athlete but have worked hard to look after myself. South African Golf Star Brandon Stone Signs with IMG for Exclusive Worldwide Representation South African golf sensation Brandon Stone announced that he has both turned professional and appointed IMG, the global sports, fashion and media company, for exclusive worldwide management and marketing representation. Stone’s amateur career has made him the talk of the golfing world and, after a year at Texas University where he finished the season ranked second on the collegiate rankings according to GolfWeek. GETTING TO KNOW YOU – Stacy Lee Bregman In our first edition of Getting to know you we catch up with Ladies European Tour campaigner, Stacy-Lee Bregman, who talks to us about her dreams, goals, dating Tatum Channing and what is still on her Bucket List. One of South Africa’s former top amateurs, Stacy-Lee partnered with Ashleigh Simon and Kelly Shean to win the World Amateur Team Championship – Espirito Trophy in 2006 before joining the pro ranks. She is currently enjoying her seventh season on the Ladies European Tour.
Q - Are you the sort of golfer who sets yearly goals? If so, what goals did you set for yourself to achieve in 2013? What are your long term goals and how do you hope to achieve them?
A - It was a bit of a tough transition for me. The travelling I found was the toughest. Being away from home for long periods of time and not being able to see my family, friends and coach was tough.
A - I am a person that sets goals all the time. For this year my goal is to finish top 10 on order of merit and to get that first win behind my name. I plan to achieve them by doing what’s right for Stacy and being patient with the process.
Q – You had a very solid amateur career and you have had several top five finishes in your six years on the LET. So, does it surprise and frustrate you that you are still chasing a maiden win in Europe?
Q - How tough was the transition from amateur ranks to the pro circuit been when you joined the pro ranks from South Africa? Tell us a bit about how you found life on Tour to be, what were the most difficult obstacles to overcome and how things improved during your time on the LET?
A - It has been a bit frustrating at times but I know I am very close. For some people it takes a bit long than others to get there first win.

Q - What would you describe as the weaknesses of your game or an aspect that you still have to give attention to? A - I would say over all everything in my game is solid. I would say my putting as I hit a lot of green and my putting average is a bit higher than someone that doesn’t hit as many. Q - Tell us a little about your golfing career. A - The first time I touched a golf club was when I was 12. I went with a friend to the driving range and messed around bit. Didn’t think anything of it until I gave up Karate and my dad started taking me to junior camps on a Sunday at Killarney. Then one Sunday afternoon I meet Neville Sundelson on the course and he has taken me up under his wing ever since. Q - What is the best golf advice you have ever received? A - From my coach Neville Sundelson: “Never change who you are and play for yourself no one else.” Q - Tournament/Major you would most like to win and why? A - British Open, US Open, Dubai Masters, German Open – these are really special events. From the crowds, the way they run them and the supported is great!! That feeling of being on centre stage, if that explains it. Q - Do you think the future of South African women’s golf is in good hands? A - I think the amateurs are in good hands, but the girls need more overseas experience. Q - What advice would you give youngsters just starting in the game? A - Golf is a game that can be cruel at times, but when you have success, it’s well worth it!! Golf needs to embrace technology or get left behind’ – say influential industry leaders attending KPMG Golf Business Forum How golf uses technology to grow the excitement and appeal of the game was one of the hot topics at this year’s KPMG Golf Business Forum staged in St Andrews, Scotland, June 3-5. Hosted at The Fairmont St Andrews Hotel and supported by Visit Scotland, Scottish Development International and Fife Council, with the assistance of Golf Tourism Scotland, the Golf Business Forum brought together over 250 delegates including leading brands, developers and world-class golf and leisure operators from more than 30 countries. Among the many subjects covered, delegates heard how technology is helping other sports to engage more deeply with audiences and how golf, driven by the professional game, has an opportunity to grow by embracing new technologies. Talking in the first session, ‘The Boardroom’, Marc Player, CEO July/August 2013

Technology allows us to communicate instantly with audiences around the world and this gives the professional game an opportunity to become more entertaining, fun and sexy – that is what we need in golf. Chris said: “As a company we’ve not invested in golf because there has not been a credible route to connect all the dots, beyond direct sponsorship. But imagine how technology – sensors in golf clubs or even a chip inside the golf ball – could transform how people watch and interact with the professional game. “I think golf has a long way to go. Everyone understands there is an issue but there doesn’t seem to be a willingness to act. We all accept it, but we don’t seem to move the needle. If we can work together we can make one little step to make golf a bit better. You have to put your toe in the water. I love golf and I love the traditions, we have to respect that, but technology can help the golf fan have the best day of their life.”

Scotland in Focus During a compelling session that started with the launch of KPMG’s ‘Value of Golf to Scotland’s Economy’ report, commissioned by the Scottish Golf Union in conjunction with VisitScotland and Scottish Enterprise, it brought together key figures in Scottish golf to debate current opportunities for its £1 billion golf industry. Stewart Walker, Director of Golf Tourism Scotland, said: “The report highlights the importance of golf as an industry in Scotland, and yet we have been complacent in identifying golf as our unique selling point. We’ve got to use the ‘Home of Golf ’ as our consistent message.”

Peter Lederer, Chairman of Gleneagles Hotels, echoed Stewart’s thoughts, adding: “We must not take Scotland and its golf for granted. Great brands are always very consistent, and Scotland has to be looking to improve and always offer a great experience. On the whole we get that right, the customer enjoys Scotland, but there are 180 other countries involved in tourism, desperate for the same market, so we cannot stand still. We must keep momentum up and keep polishing our brand.” Hamish Grey, Chief Executive of the Scottish Golf Union, said: “The key to growing golf in Scotland is getting the businesses, the clubs, right first and then we are more likely to get the visitor experience right, and get customers having fun and then coming back for more. The pressures in the wider economy have forced golf to look at the business from a customer’s perspective and we are now seeing positive evidence of change in the Scottish golf industry.”
Global Trends Affecting Golf Development – travel and tourism Delegates were shown statistics that illustrate a predicted global growth in middle class society over the next 30 years and how this would create a travel and tourism opportunity for golf. “A growing middle class will create consumer curiosity towards developing areas of the world, and as these areas become safer and more accessible, they will create viable travel and tourism destinations, and a real opportunity for golf development,” commented KPMG’s Nick Oakley, who moderated the session. Panellist, David DeSmith, Director of Marketing at Southworth Development, commented: “In a successful, emerging development of the future you will be selling memories. Having a great hotel, good food and excellent service will be a given. What will make new tourist destinations work will be the interactions visitors have while they are there. “For future golf developments to succeed they need to move from an old one-way transactional relationship to one that is friendship based and emotional. Golf development owners have to make visits more personally nourishing – the emotional response from customers is the one that will trigger people to return.” The subject of sustainability also figured highly in many discussions at the Golf Business Forum, with the Golf Environment Organization’s Director of Programmes, Kelli Jerome, participating in the ‘Global Trends’ debate. She added: “Golf has a major opportunity to show that it can construct courses for much less money, have them working efficiently with what is naturally on the site, and then operate them efficiently too. Golf has to ask itself how do you create a more sustainable development and how does it enhance society? A lot of the issues faced by the industry are perception problems, but if we are going to come under pressure from the rising cost of resources, we need to address the issues.”
Game Changers: Shaping the Future of Golf The final session of the Golf Business Forum welcomed industry heavyweights to the stage to debate current issues influencing the game, the growth of the Asian golf market, how golf needs to change, and its inclusion in the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

America has always dominated and is still the dominant force in world golf, but we are witnessing growth in the Asian market. The issue for the West is that we need to grow the game, but in China it is very different, they are at the beginning. Where middle classes develop, we will see more and more golf courses for the masses in China.” On golf in The Olympic Games… Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of The R&A: “It was made clear to us at the bidding stage that golf in the Olympics had to be an event for the game’s top professionals. It was very important that the top layers of the game supported the bid, which they did, and the players all made it clear that a 72-hole Strokeplay format was right. That is what has been proposed and accepted. Technically, this is still an open point until the end of the year.” On sponsorship in golf… Giles Morgan, HSBC’s Global Head of Sponsorship and Events: “I don’t think golf has a reputational problem, but it does have to monitor its reputation all the time. We choose to sponsor events in golf rather than players, as we see individuals as too much of a risk.”

Introducing ‘Silver Surfers’ to golf… Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of The R&A: “There is just as much potential to bring older people in, or back, to golf to boost numbers as there is to introduce young people to the sport. I don’t regard it as a bad thing to get older people playing golf. I can’t pretend I have a formula to do it, but clubs are under pressure to get members, and thinking differently in areas such as this is an option.” Golf ’s next big star… Guy Kinnings, IMG Global Head of Golf: “What a star player can do to bring a country of potential new golfers to the game is incredible. If we take the Asia region as an example, TV revenues from golf have been growing rapidly and if this interest brings hundreds of millions of new ‘eye balls’ to the game that can only be good. The Golf Business Forum also recognised two great leaders in the professional game, awarding both George O’Grady CBE, Chief Executive of The European Tour, and Tim Finchem, PGA TOUR Commissioner, with Lifetime Achievement Awards for their services to golf. Receiving his award, George O’Grady, said: “To be recognised here in Scotland is very special. I’m very humbled - it is hard to believe I have been in the game for 40 years.” Tim Finchem added: “My award is recognition for our team, our players, our sponsors and our tournaments on the PGA TOUR. If you stand back and look at pro golf today, it is as healthy as it has ever been, the globe is getting smaller and we are all working together for the good of the game.” The Golf Business Forum also heard from some greats, including five-time Open Champion, Peter Thomson, former Secretary of the R&A, Sir Michael Bonallack, and one of Europe’s finest golfers Colin Montgomerie, who joined the panel session discussing golf in Scotland.

US PGA Tour to ban anchored putting The U.S. PGA Tour avoided a potentially damaging split over golf's rules by falling in line with the Royal & Ancient and United States Golf Association (USGA) agreeing to a ban on anchored putting. The rule-making Royal & Ancient and the USGA had already imposed a ban from 2016 while the PGA Tour had been opposed to the move. "The PGA Tour policy board today acknowledged that the USGA's ban on anchored strokes ... will apply to PGA Tour competitions beginning on January 1, 2016," the Tour said in a statement. PGA Tour competitions are conducted in accordance with the USGA rules of golf however, the Tour's policy board reserved the right to make modifications for PGA Tour competitions if it deems it appropriate. "The Board also was of the opinion that having a single set of rules on acceptable strokes applicable to all professional competitions worldwide was desirable and would avoid confusion." The PGA Tour, however, did urge the two rules-making bodies to extend the time period that amateur players would be allowed to use anchored putters beyond the January 1, 2016 cut-off date. Stirling A Winner In Tennis And Golf First For Scotland
Judy Murray (mother of Andy Murray) and Colin Montgomerie have announced plans to locate Scotland’s first purpose-built Tennis and Golf Centre of its kind at Stirling, Scotland’s City of Sport. The new centre, to be built at Park Of Keir between Dunblane and Bride of Allan, will become a key element of the Stirling Sports Campus which embraces the University of Stirling (Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence) and the Forthbank sports complex to the east. In this edition of Tandi on Tour I will be discussing in detail about Game Statistics and the importance of knowing how to take your own game statistics, what the stats mean and then how to improve your golf based on what the numbers reflect. One thing to note is that game statistics do not exclusively apply to professional golfers and can in fact improve your golf game irrespective of your skill level or handicap. By doing just ONE set of game statistics for a round, you can gain enough information and insight from them to reduce your next round by at least 2 shots.
F
irst things first, what are Game Statistics and what is all the fuss about? A great example of the importance of Game Stats can be found in a fairly well known and current movie called: MoneyBall. The basic story line behind the movie focuses on the selection criteria of key players for a baseball team based not on their pedigree, background, education or potential, but rather on what the numbers or statistics say about their performance. These numbers give crucial information about how and where to position these players so that they can perform their best, even if it means that they play in position that they are not specifically trained for yet excel in. In the movie, the team selected were not of the top pedigree or most talented but rather those most effective in each position and this produced the longest winning streak ever achieved in American Baseball history by that team. Now, how this pert urns to golf is quite similar in that players, of any skill level, might spend all their practice time and energy training an area of their game that, if fact, does not need to be trained as it is a strength, and then neglect a key area that would drastically change their scores and therefore their handicap. Here is a basic format and explanation for keeping statistics: (bearing in mind, you can make it as in depth or simple as you choose using any or all of the below categories) Fairways in regulation (FIR): Get a total out of 14 and then a percentage

Greens in regulation (GIR): Get a total out of 18 and then a percentage Putts per round (PPR): Get a total for the number of putts made for the round. You can also note the distance of putts made eg. 80% from 3 foot Scrambling: (Sand saves, Up and Downs from around the green and pitch shots converted from 100 meters and in) Mark off each time you play a scrambling shot and then get your percentage of saves. Mental errors: This can be an interesting statistic and sometimes give you a better indication of where your weaknesses are. Make a note each time

columns provided and then get your totals at the end. Once you have your totals for each area of the game, your strengths and weaknesses will be apparent. The last two game stats, namely: Mental and Management Errors are a more personal statistic that you, the player will need to decide for yourself whether to mark them down and when. As mentioned earlier, these two areas can sometimes be more telling about your golf score than the main statistics as they are predominantly mental faculties. The more disciplined you are in your mental game and strategy, the lower these stats will be and therefore so will your golf scores.

SA JUNIORS CLAIM FIFTH PLACE AT JUNIOR GOLF WORLD CUP South Africa put in a great final round effort to claim fifth at the 21st TOYOTA Junior Golf World Cup 2013, supported by JAL, while Venezuela denied Australia the chance to make it two-in-row at Tokyo’s Chukyo CC in Japan last month. After the team scored a disappointing five-over-par 218 in the third round, the South Africans came back strong with two under 211 to climb to fifth on seven-under-par 845. Mpumalanga’s Thriston Lawrence, who once again anchored the team with a two under 69, was supported by a 70 from Ekurhuleni’s Jason Froneman and a 72 from Gauteng North’s James du Preez. Although Triston Strydom from Gauteng North carded the non-counting score, he nevertheless signed for a 74, his best round of the championship. Meanwhile Australia, who trailed by just one shot at the start of the final round, also combined for a
final round two-under-par 211. However, the overnight leaders came home with the same tally and managed to sneak a one stroke victory on 16-underpar 836. FOCUSSED KLEYNHANS WINS SOUTHERN CAPE SENIOR AMATEUR Tshwane golfer Ben Kleynhans is still stunned by his first provincial victory this season a full week after he lifted the Southern Cape Senior Amateur title by one stroke at George GC “I just couldn’t believe that I pulled it off, considering how many times I tried to throw it away,” the 52-year-old golfer from Akasia CC. Kleynhans has been in threatening form since the start of the season and the breakthrough victory followed three top 20 finishes, a tie for seventh at the Boland Senior Open in February and a share of fifth at the KwaZulu-Natal
Senior Amateur Open a month later. While the Tshwane senior was thrilled to finally hit the target, he lamented the fact that he won’t be able to carry his winning form into Border Open, the next event
on the senior amateur calendar scheduled for the end of June at East London GC “Unfortunately I just can’t afford to take the time away from my transport company at the moment, so it looks like I will have to skip the three events in the Eastern Province in July. “My next event will probably be the Mpumalanga Senior Open in August and then I have my title defence at the Lowveld Open in September. You never know, though, I might just be able to organise things so I can make one trip to the Eastern Cape.”
Wire-to-wire celebrations for Rebula George teenager Jovan Rebula gave the celebrated Els family more cause to celebrate at the end of June. Just four days after he collected the silverware at the BMW International Championship, Ernie Els’ 15-year-old nephew staved off a spirited final round challenge from Limpopo’s Hennie du Plessis to claim a wire-to-wire victory in the Nomads SA Boys Under-17 Championship at Mount Edgecombe Country Club on Thursday. The victory follows just 11 months after Rebula defeated Kyle McClatchie by three shots for the Nomads SA Boys U-15 Championship title. Rebula fired a final round three-under-par 68 for a winning score of six-under-par 278 and a one stroke victory over Du Plessis, who fired a closing 66. Double delight for Gauteng North at 72 Hole Teams Champs Gauteng North celebrated an unprecedented double victory at the 72 Hole Teams Championship after lifting both the Swiss Teams Trophy and Challenge Trophy at Maccauvlei GC at the end of May. The defending champions did not only retain their A-Division title, but their B-team finished second while their C-team held off a spirited challenge from Limpopo to capture the B-Division title. This marks the first time that one province has won both the coveted Swiss Teams Trophy and the Challenge Trophy since the B-Division was introduced in 2008. Kim Williams, Nobuhle Dlamini and Magda Kruger were as imperious as last year, successfully combining again to lift the Swiss Teams Trophy and seal Gauteng North’s fourth A-Division victory in a row in this prestigious annual national team competition. As expected, Gauteng North A took early control of the championship with an opening 145. The trio piled on the pressure with a second round 146 and 142 in the third and extended their advantage to take a 16 shot lead going into the final round. While Kruger signed for a non-counting 79, Williams eagled the par-five 15th on her way to a closing one-under-par 72 and Dlamini birdied the 18th for a 74. The defending champions closed with an even-par 146 and claimed the title on a winning score of five-
